YAY! So ready for GREAT talent. IMO I think the peeps on the voice and x factor are just not up to idol standards :-p

  • http://twitter.com/tukicarreno Tuki

I am glad they included Kat! I am so excited for the second season of Smash!

  • tucker davis

as ‘Home’ plays in the background…lol. They’ve certainly gotten their money’s worth out of that song!

  • LeahKittyS

When I got the People Magazine “American Idol: Where Are They Now?” edition, Phillip hadn’t won yet, but they had an accurate list of Idol’s ultimate Top 12. It went like this: Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Fantasia, Kellie Pickler, Adam Lambert, Constantine Maroulis, Scotty McCreery, Katharine McPhee, Ruben Studdard, and Clay Aiken. I wonder which of those Phillip’s addition might displace if they do another “Where Are They Now?” special?

  • Incipit

At :03 there’s a fade from DC into Kris Allen – but the ad has the usual addition of non-winners, (except this time no Jennifer Hudson)  and the usual subtraction of Taylor and Lee.

  • Kirsten

(except this time no Jennifer Hudson)

She’s there. Right after Fantasia. Here is the order I get:
    (Season-Finish)
    Chris (5-4)
    Kat (5-2)
    Fantasia (3-1)
    JHud (3-7)
    Jordin (6-1)
    Kelly (1-1)
    Cook (7-1)
    Kris/Adam (8-1/2)
    Scotty (10-1)
    Phillip (11-1)

    Seasons representation: 1 (1), 2 (0), 3 (2), 4 (1), 5 (2), 6 (1), 7 (1), 8 (2), 9 (0), 10 (1), 11 (1)

  • iluvai

    Yay Idol.

  • getaway1

Jennifer Hudson is included. But I would not even have noticed Kris Allen.

  • jlscott13

Well, it’s still too early to include him in that list, imo. If his album sells well, and his next single does well, then he will be.

  • girlygirltoo

I don’t know if I agree with that list. But whatever — I rarely agree with any lists People Magazine comes up with :)

  • durbesque

The Ohz have it!  Tonight, Maroon 5′s song and Germaine’s song both had Ohz or Ooz.  It’s an epidemic!

  • girlygirltoo

It goes by so quickly ithere’s not much time to notice anyone other than the others they actually mention (Kelly, Carrie, Scotty, Phillip)

  • Incipit

Could have sworn I double checked for her – but you’re right – she’s there after Fantasia.

FOX usually has short and longer versions of these – so likely, more to come.

  • LeahKittyS

Well, who would you include and what order? I might have thrown Jordin, David C, and Kris in there somewhere just because I like them.

  • LeahKittyS

That’s really not right to exclude them. They won fair and square, and they’re still working their butts off on music. I’m still hearing Taylor’s “Do I Make You Proud” and a couple of Lee’s songs, mostly “Sweet Serendipity,” in random places.

  • http://twitter.com/Universian8X Anna Bones Clarkwood

Heck, Ruben & Clay are currently bigger than Phillip. 1 double platinum single is gr8 & all, Let’s see how his album does. Ruben & Clay deserve the Adam/Kris treatment. And, I’m ok with Phillip being included. He’s a fresh hit with a gr8 selling single so there is leeway for brand promotion.

LeahKitty8, Constantine a Top 12 Idol, WTF?! I know he is/was doing decently well in plays but he sticks out like a sore thumb of that Top 12 list. Off the top of my head, I’d be satisfied with Jordin Sparks way more than Constantine. AND, IMO, once my swap of Constantine with Jordin, as of right now Phillip wouldn’t have room, at least not yet. As far as neither of the Davids, that’s another 2 that belong way b4 Constantine among others esp from s5. In fact, I’d have to swap Adam out to get Cook in b/c Adam just hasn’t had a big of a sold impact as Cook. Now, even if we aren’t talking sales but vocal & performance ability, Constantine is a sore thumb. Adam on the other hand, haha, fits perfectly.

  • LeahKittyS

Don’t look at me, I didn’t write the list. They only included Constantine because of his Tony nomination. (And I do think he’s cute.)
On a sort of random topic, I’ve noticed Idols saying how much American Idol is like “The Hunger Games,” which I read and loved. So all of these inspired me to come up with the ultimate American Idol fan fiction:
The story is told from Kelly Clarkson’s point of view, because she’s awesome. America is gone and replaced by a dystopia divided into 12 districts, based on the 12 seasons of American Idol and just like the book series. The citizens live in substandard conditions while the Capitol lives in luxury. Each year 12 tributes from each district are chosen to compete in the Hunger Games (which operate exactly like in the books). The 144 tributes in this story are based on the current 132 known AI finalists (I’m not including Jermaine Jones because of his weird circumstances) and will include the Top 12/13 of this year when they are announced (I’ll tweak the story to fit them all if need be. Because Season 1 only had 10 finalists, District 1 only sends 10 tributes, while Districts 8 and 10, the two years with 13 finalists, each send in an extra to make up for this). The MVPs of the story are those 12 I listed, though other successful alums are key players as well. But once they’re in the arena, nothing goes according to plan…

  • Incipit

They won fair and square, and they’re still working their butts off on music.

True enough, LeahKittyS. But it’s Fox’s Promo, and Idol’s show – so if they want to add in people who never won – I guess they can also leave out people who did win. They like to do some re-writing of history, when they can. *snerk*

    IMO.

  • girlygirltoo

I think we pretty much knew the promos would all pimp Phillip, given the success of “Home”. This is what distinguishes Idol promos from commercials for XF and The Voice — those shows can’t really sell the show on the basis of previous contestants’ success (although XF has tried to fudge it by using XFUK stars like 1D) — Idol can.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BTBLQCZR7Y7LHV5BFYKYW5UQ6Q Aden

American Idol has the best contestants.  I can’t believe I wasted my time watching XF tonight.  And for The Voice well it’s all about boosting the judges career and not the contestants.

  • curly_yenta

After eleven years of Idol’s not-so-hidden agenda of only attaching themselves to whom -they- deem worthy, this promo is not surprising.  One thing jumped out at me though.  It’s only after Kat’s gig on Smash do they even acknowledge her existance.  For the 6 years before that, she was a non-entity and non-existent to them – and visa-versa (only having her on the show once, I believe, after Season 5).  They’re so transparent – or maybe I’m just tuned into their agenda.  Good thing there are people in other parts of the biz who do recognize the talent of those not included in Idol’s promo.

  • blackberryharvest

Its not really a big deal of who they choose to show in their previews. Its not really an agenda thing, its just showing who has achieved huge success outside of the show. Until recently, Kat wasn’t very successful.

  • curly_yenta

You’re right, it’s not a big deal who they choose to highlight in the big scheme of things.  It’s only a reflection of “their” reality – not necessarily the real reality of who and who is not a huge success.  I guess we all have our own perceptions about that.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yeah, Idol’s “loyalty” to past winners/runners-up is very “fluid” and
changes according to what any of these Idols are currently doing (that
Idol wants to take credit for). IMO all of the winners should be in that
clip, even if it’s for a micro-second. I’m sure that Idol/FOX could have found a couple of micro-seconds in that ad for Ruben and Taylor.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Constantine isn’t shown in the ad.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Ruben & Clay deserve the Adam/Kris treatment. And, I’m ok with Phillip being included.”

I agree. It would have been nice to see a micro-second of Ruben and Clay together.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake Williams

yep. We are ready for WGWG number 6.

  • kmd23

I think they lost me in that AI promo when they tried to say AI creates superstars. lol To be honest with the exception of Kelly and Carrie that is just not even close to the truth. I know David A. is away from his career for 2 years but I still think he is a very popular Idol with many fans. He should have been included. He is not a superstar but then neither are the others with the exception of a very few.

  • http://twitter.com/ItsMyT1me Lori

I loved the little promo, even with its glaring omissions. I totally get why they included Kat and Constantine. There are all kinds of music careers outside of getting that one elusive hit on top 40 radio. Kat, Constantine, and Jennifer have found what likely will be longer term careers by moving into TV, Broadway, and Film.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Constantine isn’t in that promo.

  • jpfan2

I know the clips go quickly but I didn’t see Constantine!  The only ones that folks will remember are Kelly, Carrie, Scott and P2 because they are name checked. Maybe Daughtry because you see him first as the rest go by really fast.

A slightly longer version would  be helpful.  P2 has one of the top songs in the US right now so I’m not sure why other Idols are more “currently” succesful than him. Right now he, Kelly, Scotty and Carrie are making $ for 19 and their labels.
    The others not so much.

  • http://twitter.com/ItsMyT1me Lori

There are two discussions, the promo and the people list. I was commenting on both.

  • kmd23

I just don’t think that Scotty or P2 qualify as superstars but of course AI is going to promote their current winner. I get that.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Ofcourse, I completely disagree when you leave out the Season’s winner.  It’s not fair. Period.  Taylor has had a successful career.  Then, Season 2 and 9 are non-existent?

LeahKitty8, Constantine a Top 12 Idol, WTF?! I know he is/was doing decently well in plays but he sticks out like a sore thumb of that Top 12 list.

Anyone who follows Broadway, knows what a  great honor it is to be nominated for a Tony award.  Constantine is Idol’s jewel in this arena of entertainment!  Looks like he’s heading for another Tony Award nomination. YAY!

  • Anny_nanny

I want to see in the Intro of all the idols of each year. + all those who wants to ??????? Fox. I see the idols as a family and I can’t drive them out from a family of “uncle John, because I don’t like” and “aunt Maggie, because she’s a silly”. This is my family and I love them all.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“I can love or not love any of the idols, but, as says Ryan: “America voted”"

Except that more and moreso over the years the Idol audience/voters have become a narrow demographic and not been representative of “America” in general.

  • elliegrll

When I got the People Magazine “American Idol: Where Are They Now?” edition, Phillip hadn’t won yet, but they had an accurate list of Idol’s ultimate Top 12. It went like this: Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Fantasia, Kellie Pickler, Adam Lambert, Constantine Maroulis, Scotty McCreery, Katharine McPhee, Ruben Studdard, and Clay Aiken. Not that this list has any meaning, but any list that has Adam, Ruben, Katherine and Clay, but not Fantasia, can’t be taken seriously.

  • Anny_nanny

If I don’t vote, it does not mean that I have the right to tell a neighbor that he is wrong.

  • jlscott13

Except for Kelly and Carrie, the two biggest success stories. I think we all can agree on that :)

  • fuzzywuzzy

That’s not what I meant. I meant that it’s hyperbole and inaccurate to claim that “America” chose the Idol, when the viewing/voting audience does not represent all of America, in general.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Fantasia is on that list.

  • YankeeFan08

Fantasia is there … between Daughtry and Kellie.

The list may not have any “meaning”, but People included them.  So yay for all the ones that made the list. :)

  • Anny_nanny

I agree with you, but this in no way affects my desire to see all of the winners in the Intro. First of all I respect these kids, and ppl who supported them.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Oh, I agree and I believe that all of the winners should be shown in the Intro as well.

  • TheOther

If Phillip Phillips had not won, there would not have
been a Home – at least not from AI. The song wasn’t suited for Jessica or Josh
or anyone else from Season 11. Thus, it became the ultimate Cinderella story.
After 11 years (which is a long time) for any TV show, taking a hit in ratings
with a flooded market of TV singing competitions, it turns around and comes up
with its best selling coronation song of all time.

  • Incipit

Total testament to Idol’s value as a platform, TheOther – That song had no where near the attention for Greg Holden and Drew Pearson when they performed it – but the same song, done on Idol, with attendant publicity, and picked up by a person attached to the Olympics – the story has a different ending.

The music didn’t change, the audience did.

That’s what Idol does, if one dismisses all the hyperbole, and the focus on bragging rights. They actually have something to brag about that they just gloss over. It provides a platform for all sorts of music and all sorts of artists to be heard and appreciated, and people can listen and decide if they want to support this person they never would have heard of without the Idol Platform. And that has more value to the fragmented world of music than the focus on “Supahstahs” – IMO.

  • Anny_nanny

I’m surprised that she wasn’t released a single. Bad song never was the reason for the release.

  • jlscott13

There could have still be a “Home.” Someone else might have recorded it. P2 didn’t write it.

  • curly_yenta

Not a fan, but I consider Constantine one of Idol’s biggest success stories.  He’s an established and Tony nominated Broadway actor.  Unfortunatly, (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), he, like other successes, i.e., Taylor, didn’t make “their” perception of success list, so they constantly get shunned.  It’s not reality though.  Their list has a very confined definition and has for 11 seasons.

  • fantoo1

Don’t you mean 7? Taylor Hicks is also a WGWG.

  • julesb2183

If what you say is true, that is two more superstars than anyone else has created from these shows. :p

While not exactly “superstars” Idol HAS launched many successful careers, even if some haven’t been able to hold on to singing careers(which is actually normal in the industry). We got Tony nominated people and successful Broadway actors (Constantine and Diana DeGarmo), Successful songwriters (Chris Sligh and Ace Young, who was grammy nominated for his songwriting), an Oscar and grammy winner, Jennifer Hudson, as well as artists who have carved out good country careers (Kellie, Josh Gracin, Scotty), a TV star, Katherine McPhee. Mandisa was nominated for a grammy and has a successful Gospel/Christian career, Fantasia has been successful in the Urban genre and is a grammy winner. I could go on.

Oops. It seems like I forgot people. There is Kelly, Carrie and Chris, too ;)

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Not a fan, but I consider Constantine one of Idol’s biggest success
stories.  He’s an established and Tony nominated Broadway actor. ”

I agree. (I thought that a poster was mistaken in thinking that Constantine was in the video promo, but she was writing about the People list).

  • curly_yenta

He’s more like a WGWH (white guy with harmonica ;))

  • LeahKittyS

Fantasia is on the list. Read my post again. She’s between Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler.

  • suenigma

Do you have a link to or scan of the People’s list? Im really interested in reading it. :)

  • Allison

No Season 2 love? Considering that season was the water cooler topic of  2003 it’s a real slight.

  • LeahKittyS

I got the list from the special edition “American Idol: Where Are They Now?” People magazine, so the whole edition may be available to read on their website. I’m sorry, I don’t know where else it would be. You could try looking for a paper copy of the magazine; I found it really interesting, and it talked about what all 120 of them from Seasons 1-10 have been up to. Only a select few have put music on the back burner; the majority of them are still hard at work on it.

  • suenigma

     Thanks LeahkittyS!

  • overthetop1

So, no Lee, no Taylor, and no Ruben

  • Anny_nanny
  • suenigma

Thanks for the link. As far as I can tell People didn’t explicitly say that they deemed those people the top Twelve Idols or the ultimate Idols. It was just a list entitled the Idol Rich and they didn’t make any qualitative statements about them as a group at all. Mind you, the link didn’t have all the pages, but perhaps I’m missing part of the article.

  • Incipit

    Thanks, Anny_nanny!

That was fun – the “Look Inside” feature has a Search Inside This Book – but typing any name in it also got all sorts of pages with lots of pictures and a Table of Contents, full of things that Idol ‘could’ highlight in their ads – and probably won’t – and some things Idol won’t ever mention. That “Idol Rich” is just one chapter.
