American Idol 12 – The Final 2 Performances – What the Critics Say

Here’s what critics around the interwebs are saying about last night’s American Idol Final Two performance show. Read my recap here.

Strong finish makes for a clear ‘American Idol’ favorite – On a night when both singers showed they didn’t make it this far by accident, Candice Glover saved her best performance of season 12 for the most opportune moment. Her reprise of “I (Who Have Nothing)” showed the power, range, and swagger that was hard for the audience to ignore, and gave her a ton of momentum just as the voting lines were opened for the final time this year. – Read more at Today.com

‘American Idol’ Finale: 7 Things You Didn’t See on TV – The audience was larger than usual, as the American Idol set moved from CBS Television City in Los Angeles to the Nokia Theatre, downtown at L.A. Live for the top two performance finale. But, as always, there were things you didn’t see if you weren’t inside the venue. The Hollywood Reporter observed them for you from a reserved seat. – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter

‘American Idol’ Finale Recap: Kree Harrison Battles Candice Glover – Because in this battle of soul singers — the first girl versus girl finale since 2004 — Kree Harrison and Candice Glover, both wildly talented, have proven to be equally deserving of the season 12 title. Recall when Kris Allen pulled off an upset victory against the glorious Adam Lambert, a far superior performer, in season eight. More injustices: goofy Taylor Hicks winning over angel-voiced beauty Katharine McPhee, circa 2006. Lee DeWyze usurping the throne from Crystal Bowersox. And, dare I say it, Clay Aiken was robbed in season two. – Read more at Hollywood Reporter

‘American Idol’ Finale: Will Candice Glover Or Kree Harrison Win? – It wasn’t country versus soul, it was soul versus soul, as Kree Harrison and Candice Glover faced off Wednesday (May 15) in the first all-female “American Idol” finale in nine years. The contestants sang three songs apiece: one chosen by “Idol” producer Simon Fuller, one that will be their winning single and one chosen by the contestants themselves as their favorite song of the season. – Read more at MTV

‘American Idol’ recap: Kreedom and the Candy Girl – Kree Harrison and Candice Glover sang their hearts — and guts! — out during Wednesday’s hour-long performance finale in three rounds: Simon Fuller’s Pick, Coronation Single, and Repeat of a Favorite Performance. Candice, who certainly Has Something if you catch my drift, finished things out with a raging showstopper. Aw, Kree. I say that 1) because I can’t believe I’m going to have to stop typing such a fun nonsense word — “Kree” — so often after tonight, and 2) because WHY WOULD SHE CHOOSE TO GO FIRST? – Read more at EW.com

‘American Idol’: Who won the last round? – American Idol may have a fraction of the ratings it did just a couple of seasons ago, but it sure left viewers with a cliffhanger Wednesday. After three performances each from Candice Glover and Kree Harrison, no obvious winner emerged. Bothsingers gave strong performances across the board, and both ended with their best. – Read more at USA Today

American Idol Recap: The Final Face-off – So this is it! After a long journey that took four months and forever at the same time, we are at our end. Two singers remain — one who charged out of the gate and then got lethargic, and one who tried out twice before and then came back with a new attitude and a sensible Contempo Casuals wardrobe — and I truly have no idea who I’m rooting for. More than ever, the final two are evenly matched, both in talent and in personality. This could go either way. “Me caring” is neither of the ways. – Read more at Vulture.com

American Idol Performance Finale Recap: Yes It’s Ladies’ Night and the Feeling’s Right [Updated] – Tonight’s American Idol Season 12 performance finale began with a moment of pure F/X foolery: Candice Glover and Kree Harrison standing nose-to-nose with stern-eyed, tight-lipped, prize-fighter solemnity. Were we about to witness the unleashing of body-blows and hair-pulls, or had mischievous Uncle Nigel merely patched together two individual camera shots to promote the idea of a duel to the death for Phillip Phillips’ glittering tiara and confetti shower? – Read more at TV Line

‘American Idol’: Kree Harrison Vs. Candice Glover – It was down to just two on “American Idol” tonight, as Kree Harrison and Candice Glover, both 23, sang for America’s votes one last time, both hoping they’d be named the next Idol. It marked the first girl-versus-girl season finale since season three of the show. The girls sang three songs tonight on stage at the Nokia Theater. Kree won a coin toss and decided to go first. – Read more at WSJ.com

‘American Idol’ recap: Kree Harrison and Candice Glover vie for win – Either way you go, America, you can’t lose. Kree Harrison and Candice Glover, “American Idol’s” two very talented Season 12 finalists, sang for the big win Wednesday night. In what Ryan Seacrest called a battle between country and soul and the show’s first all-female finale since season 3, each singer performed at the top of her game, tackling three songs in three rounds live before the judges, 7,000 fans crammed into the Nokia Theater, and the voters at home who would determine their fates. – Read more at the Los Angeles Times

‘American Idol’ Top 2 Showdown: Girl Power? – On Wednesday night, Kree Harrison and Candice Glover competed on the final performance show of “American Idol” Season 12, in a battle of what Ryan Seacrest rather uncreatively called “Country vs. Soul.” (Really, Ryan? That’s all you could come up with? Season 8’s “Guy-Next-Door vs. Guyliner” had a better ring to it.) Historically, this was the first girl-vs.-girl “Idol” finale showdown since Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo in Season 3. Was it as exciting as that finale? Well, Season 3 was nine long years ago, so my memory is fuzzier than one of Nicki Minaj’s wigs…but in a word, no. No, it was not. – Read more at Yahoo.com

‘American Idol’ Recap: Who Came Out on Top After Final Performances? – For the first time since 2004, two ladies squared off for the “American Idol” crown in its penultimate episode, the final show before the results are announced and the winner of the competition’s 12th season is revealed. Both finalists, Candice Glover and Kree Harrison, entered the evening virtually neck-and-neck, with little separating the two other than obvious musical differences. Ryan Seacrest proclaimed the night country vs. soul, and that it was, a battle between the country-leaning Harrison and Glover’s soulful, wide-ranging voice. – Read more at Billboard.com
