Entertainment Weekly Live Blog

You’re welcome, Nigel! Well, not me specifically, but every fan who BITCHED about giving us a modern song week. After the disaster that was Billy Joel week, when the kids mostly had no connection to the songs they were singing, with the results being less than satisfying–it was time to give the kids some relevant songs.

The best thing about tonight, is that we really got to see the remaining contestants as they would be out in the music world, and the view was pretty good.  Colton is destined for success in CCM, Skylar could have hit records on the country charts, with the right material, Joshua could burn up the rhythmic charts.  Jessica could be a force unto herself, crossing over to pop, to hac and rhythmic. Elise’s retro rock soul could take her to adult alternative, Phil could do his jam band thing at Bonnaroo and even Hollie, after a few years experience, could hit the pop world.   This week’s theme enabled me to clearly envision what could become of these kids in a post-Idol world.

More please, Nigel! Keep the themes loose. Let the kids pick songs that suit their individual styles, and we’ll be in for some highly entertaining shows between now and the finale.

My favorite performances tonight were from Joshua, Elise and Jessica. I could totally go for a Jessica/Joshua final two, but i can’t see a final without at least one white guy.  Jimmy has pitted Colton against P2.  I suppose the tactic could be a motivating factor for both of them, but really, I thinkk the producers figure a rivalry could make for good TV.  There’s a little bit of that going on with Jessica and Josh, but I can’t see either of them picking up that ball and running with it.

By the way. I wouldn’t angst too much about this week’s results. I think there is a pretty good chance the judges will use the save tomorrow. It’s either this week or next, and because of the DQ of Jermaine Jones, the save HAS to be used to make up for the extra elimination.

***

I really hate the over-dramatic packaged intros that begin the show now.   I really miss the live cold openings of yore.

Jlo is ROCKING THE HAIR EXTENSIONS this week.  The crowd is screaming their heads off. What did they give those teenagers in the audience to make them so crazy tonight?

Tommy Hilfiger stopped by the mansion to give the kids some more really bad fashion advice they won’t take. Oh, now Tommy is telling them what they should wear off-stage as well. Dream on.  Tommy dresses Phil in a fairly conservative outfit. P2 remains skeptical.

Camera crews traveled to the Idol’s hometowns to check out what kind of support they have there.

Skylar Laine – “Didn’t Know How Much I Loved You” by Kellie Pickler –  Shout out to Skylar from Grandpa, “We’re gonna kill that big deer next year!”  You betcha! Jimmy has never heard of this Kellie Pickler song, so he’s a little skeptical.  He also isn’t sure if Skylar should play her acoustic guitar like she planned.  I’m impressed with the way Skylar, at such a young age, seems to know who  she is as an artist. She sticks to her plan, despite Jimmy’s misgivings, and it works out for her.  The guitar doesn’t necessarily enhance her performance, but it doesn’t hurt it either. And she shows a side of herself we haven’t seen yet. Her vocals are really lovely and heartfelt on this song.  I’m not sure why she’s got flames shooting out of the stage, but it’s not too distracting.  Randy declares that Skylar “is back.”  Crazy hot. And perfect pitch, according to Jlo.  Steven is enamored with the women this year. “The crows make crow, but the hens deliver the goods.” –  1-866-436-5701

Colton Dixon – “Love the Way You Lie” by Skylar Grey – Jimmy challenges Colton “It’s you against Phillip. Let’s cut the bullsh*t. I think you’re behind Phillip.”   what kind of crap is that? Jimmy is like a sadistic dad. Jimmy and Akon don’t like Colton’s original arrangement, so they suggest some changes.  Colton feels super pressured this week, but thinks his song pick has the potential to be a moment (Doesn’t he say that, like, every week?)  Colton plays the piano, putting his signature angsty spin on the tune.  This week, the Big Note comes in the middle of the song rather than the end.  He’s got smoke and strings on stage with him.  Tonight, Colton does Colton very well. His fans must be thrilled, but I’m not sure that performance attracted any newbies.   Jlo says he always surprises her with his approach to the notes. “It’s always very Colton,” she says. But she wishes it were more of a song. Steven calls him “a rare talent” and thinks he could send the live recording straight out to radio. “Colton hasn’t found his top yet” sounds vaguely dirty. Heh. But it means that the singer has more room to grow.  Randy loves that the performance was subtle and sensitive. Colton told Ryan he was going to originally sing “I Will Not Bow” by Breaking Benjamin, but Jimmy and Akon steered him in another direction, and he’s glad. 1-866-436-5702

Elise Testone and Phil Phillips –  “Somebody That I Used to Know” by  Gotye – Phillip and Elise’s sarcastic little video at the top is cute.  They roll their eyes at each other. Fake fighting during rehearsal! Elise really really wanted to do the song. No wonder, because she pretty much kills it, while 3-note Phil has some trouble on the chorus.  Elise sings more than Phil does, and I don’t think it’s an accident.  Steven says they nailed it. Jlo says they made it work. She feels Elise sang it better. So does Randy. These two sing together pretty well. I predict a duet on tour.

Elise & Phillip, Top 7 Compete ~ American Idol… by HumanSlinky

Jessica Sanchez – “Stuttering” by Jazmine Sullivan – This week, Jessica sings a song that Jimmy doesn’t know. I suspect most in the audience won’t know it either, so when she sings a carbon copy of the original, she won’t get called on it.  Akon became a Jessica fan when he saw her on TV this year.  He pimped her to Jimmy, “Feed her a few more hamburgers, and she’s ready to go.” Whatever that means. Regardless, Jessica hits the stage and delivers a vocal with nuance and passion. If Jessica wins the whole thing, I will not be mad.  Girl, go snatch that crown from the boys! No standing o? She deserved one.  Randy feels like she set the bar really high for herself tonight. “You slayed the biggest fish of the night.” Jlo says  she could feel Jessica really digging into the song in the middle. But she’s still waiting for a Joshua-like performance–one that really impacts the audience.  (I think she’s done that already)  Steven says she slays it every time.  – 1-866-436-5703

Jessica Sanchez, Top 7 Compete ~ American Idol… by HumanSlinky

Joshua Ledet – “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars – Bruno put on a sensational show at the Grammys this year with this song. Let’s see how Joshua does.  Jimmy and Akon work on making Joshua’s song more dynamic.  Akon is feeling him. “With his tone, he can pierce through people’s hearts.”  Joshua gets a 20th birthday shoutout from Fantasia! “From Fantasia to Mantasia,” she says. Eep.  This performance is pretty hot. In place of a gospel choir this week are horns and go go dancers.  For the first time I can see Joshua fitting into the contemporary R&B world–with a throwback style that’s got a contemporary twist. When Joshua is ON he commands the stage. One of his best performances to date. The judges give him a standing ovation.  Steven says he can sell a song like a work of art. Then Steven tries to set him up with one of the go go dancers. (Uhm. No.) Jlo explains why she compared Joshua to Jessica–because he just illustrated that it’s more than the vocals–it’s being dynamic, energetic, and taking control of the audience.   Randy says, “I think we’ve got somebody who really’s got to have it.”  Yeesh. Ryan brings Joshua’s dad up on stage and asks him if he approves of the go go dancer. Dad looks really uncomfortable. Argh.  – 1-866-436-5704

Joshua Ledet, Top 7 Compete ~ American Idol 2012 by HumanSlinky

Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine – “Don’t You Wanna Stay” by Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean – NEWS BULLETIN.  Nobody has ever, EVER thought that Colton and Skylar were an item. And as hard as you’re trying to drum up some stupid fake ship, WE STILL DON’T. So stop it. Now. Oy. There is one funny quip: Colton says he isn’t dating Skylar because she owns a gun. This duet is fraught with problems. The song is too big for Colton, and out of Skylar’s range. She can’t hit the high notes. These two have no chemistry at all. Still, Randy is the only judge who is willing to call out Skylar on her pitch problems.  When cornered by Ryan, Jlo admits it too.  Kelly isn’t called Queen for nothing.

Colton & Skylar, Top 7 Compete ~ American Idol… by HumanSlinky

Hollie Cavanagh – “Perfect” by Pink  – Jimmy says that the only thing she is missing is a certain type of experience, and it’s true. For once, Hollie is wearing an outfit that isn’t 30 years too old for her. She looks so pretty. Her vocal is flawless and strong, but she takes every bit of grit out of the Pink version.  She sings it like a school girl who has never had a care in the world.  Even when she sings with confidence, I don’t feel a connection to the music from her.  It could certainly come to her eventually, but it’s not going to be in the next few weeks.  Jlo gave her a few sweet, if not effusive, compliments. but Steven didn’t like it at all, “It wasn’t perfect..it just laid there a little bit for me.”  What? At least explain to the girl what the hell you mean.  *crickets* after his critique. Randy calls her out on pitch problems, which is absolutely baffling. I think Hollie is going to get a slew of pity votes tonight.   1-866-436-5705

Hollie Cavanagh, Top 7 Compete ~ American Idol… by HumanSlinky

Phil Phillips – “Give a Little More” by Maroon 5 – So, what is this game Jimmy is playing? He pits Phil against Colton, but in this go round, Colton has the edge, because he attracts more girls. Does Jimmy enjoy playing head games with people, or is this just for TV? Akon doesn’t think Phill’s song is exciting enough. Jimmy says not to be different just for the sake of being different. That’s been my beef with Phil. He “switches things up” only to make his songs –with some notable exceptions–sound the same every week.  Female sax player is on stage with him. The song was best when it was just him and the sax. When the band kicked in, things got a little dull.  Steven’s critique made absolutely nos sense, “The more you’ve taken serious to yourself, the more your singing melody and hitting the lines, which is a lot different than the Phillip Phillips who came here to begin with.”  OOOK.  Steven compares him to Steve McQueen and Johnny Cash. He had to look down at his notes for that bon mot. Jlo was underwhelmed. Oh. She calls him out on sounding the same every week! Randy agrees with her. Finally. – 1-866-436-5706

Phillip Phillips, Top 7 Compete ~ American Idol… by HumanSlinky

Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez – “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger) by Kelly Clarkson – Ah. Joshua and Jessica are besties! Watch their interaction, Steven, and get a clue. Just sayin’.  Whoa. The harmonies are messed up. Lots of pitchy moments there, although the ship kind of righted itself by the end. Messy.  Jlo calls this season of Idol the “season of the big voice.”  Jlo chooses not comment on the vocals directly, just that the trio make her proud. Steven calls it “Beautiful” in other words, “I don’t feel like critiquing.”  Randy thinks it was really good, but gives the edge to Joshua. (He sang in tune the most, at least).

Hollie, Joshua & Jessica, Top 7 ~ American Idol… by HumanSlinky

Elise Testone – “You and I” by Lady Gaga –  Ah…Elise is a Jason Segal fan, and she gets a shout out from him via video!  Jason says he’s giant fan of hers! Aw.  Wow. Elise wants to start the song from behind the drums. Thank God Jimmy talks her out of that disaster.  Akon tells her, “What needs to happen is you need to kill it.” TRUTH.  Some of you may remember that Haley was handed this song last year,  by Jimmy, before Gaga released it. But because the tune was brand new, and even though Haley killed it, the judges poo poohed the song choice. In hindsight, I think the judges were setting up a redemption arc for Haley, because she ended up “redeeming” herself in her second song.  I’m not even going to compare Elise to Haley. I like both versions a lot.  Elise brings a gritty soulfulness to her interpretation, and I dig it.  This time around, the judges had no problem with the song choice at all. And speaking of redemption, they treat this performance as Elise’s comeback from last week’s subpar outing. “Elise is back!” screams Randy. He thinks she had a moment tonight. Jlo says there’s no one who sings like her. Steven says she turned the song into genius. –  1-866-436-5707

Elise Testone, Top 7 Compete ~ American Idol 2012 by HumanSlinky

Lots of time to kill! Ryan wants to know from the judges if the contestants took the modern theme and  successfully presented themselves as the artists they are, or could be, and the consensus is yes. Steven says he thinks the songs picked the contestants this time around.  The judges refused to name a contestant who might be in trouble. Randy says that at this point of the competition, you never know what’s going to happen.

I thought it was funny they showed everybody reacting to DeAndre, including his hometown, but didn’t really show him.  Last I checked he was alive and well doing the interview rounds.

I certainly wish they would do the huff again.  They have done what I would call “fake” huffs since season 8 starting at top 5 instead of top 7.  I kind of enjoy it.  It kind of puts a little bit of fun into what is normally a very tense situation.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

If they “Huff” anyone, it will be P2.  Because he’s the most likely to get super annoyed about it.

Have the feeling this will be a challenging evening for me, lol.

As a country listener, there are two songs I know and the rest I probably will have no clue what they are supposed to sound like unless I recognize them from the background music track at the grocery or getting my hair done. Ha.

  • rayni

I realized today that I don’t really give a rip about who wins. That makes me sad. I love being crazily invested in who’s gonna win. I know that I will buy music from Joshua and Elise whether they win or not.  I think I’m slowly slipping away – I hate the tone of Skylar and Colton’s voices, Phillip & Hollie make me uncomfortable and I would never buy Jessica’s music.

  • loosegoose

I won’t even recognize the country songs. All new to me. Maybe that’s good–no expectations based on other versions I’ve heard before.

  • steph6449

Jimmy was right- the guitar adds nothing to the performance.

Wow.  Very nice.  I think Kellie would be very proud of Skylar’s version.

ETA: Just to echo mj’s comment in chat. Why in the world did they see the need to add the pyro in the backround? Heh

  • http://twitter.com/CoreyIversen Corey Iversen

I hate how they are forcing the performances to be so incredibly X-Factor esque. Skyler surrounded by flames shooting out of the stage actually takes away from the performance more than adds to it.

  • loosegoose

At least someone got Skylar into a different style top that doesn’t flare out around her bottom. It’s still not great, but MUCH better than she was wearing before.

  • http://twitter.com/CoreyIversen Corey Iversen

wtf why are they saying Skylar is back when she just had her best performance last week? Oh judges. Update your script please.

    not get it…shame on me.

Skylar’s take on the song was much better than Pickler’s original version.

  • http://twitter.com/Ngarcia3 N

They meant back to her country roots.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Not a fan of country, but I thought that Skylar did pretty well.  I didn’t think that the guitar added, and in fact, sort of took away from her moving around the stage and showing energy.

  • loosegoose

Oh no! A whole crop of little kids in Tennessee have dead skunks on their heads now!

I agree. I wish she ditched the guitar, but that’s alright. I thought it was a fantastic performance.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I don’t know the song, but I thought Skylar did pretty well.  I agree that I’m not sure she needed the guitar, but it was a really solid performance.

Why are they trying to frame this as Colton being and underdog? He definitely isn’t behind Philly Phillips.

  • Trina

    Woa this staging is GORGEOUS.

  • loosegoose

I like when Jimmy gives such specific comments about how to improve the performance. Helps me understand what he’s hearing and listening for, and I would think that kind of advice would be easier to work with than the general mumbo-jumbo the judges tend to give.

I will never be much of a Colton fan, vocally, but the Idol audience will eat that up.  He will be so safe tomorrow night it’s ridiculous.

But if we must have Colton versus P2, I’d actually take Colton.

  • Anonymous

I wasn’t feeling Skylar as much as the judges.. Actually preferred last week’s performance.

Colton did a pretty good job.  It’s the first performance of his so far this year that I didn’t mind listening to.  I prefer him over P2, but still not a fan of his.  Joshua is the only guy I care for at this point.  I think Steven Tyler is right though, Colton will do well when he gets to record his own songs.

  • justmefornow

    Of course not.
BTW, He reminds my daughter of a whiney Nick Jonas. lol.

  • shell29

I have to admit I kinda liked that from Colton.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

I would say Colton did better in the performance than rehearsal but so far, Skylar outperformed him.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/JC5VIWKY7SZ67OVWR2ISVCWYKY Brian

I think this might be the first time I have actually felt there wasn’t anyone really weak in the final seven.  Part of the reason is because the right people went home so far.  But I do think everyone left has serious potential and talent.  I do think Hollie has not done as well lately and that Elise probably has the least devoted following, so (having not seen all the performances yet) I suspect they are in the most danger, and I also feel like Joshua probably needs to continue to be absolutely amazing to continue past about the final four or five, but the remaining group is a good group.

  • fuzzywuzzy

That’s been pretty obvious for a number of weeks now.  lol

  • Anonymous

That performance from Colton wasn’t great, but he has studied the Idol playbook very well.   It will be interesting to see if, even though he’s not a great singer, and a lot of the stuff that he’s doing isn’t staying true to his own style, his knowledge of what works will get him the title.

  • Da 1 N Only

He’s not my favorite but for the first time I didn’t tune out Colton & actually enjoyed his performance. Props to him.

Skylar and Colton were fantastic tonight. Wow. Skylar good job with the Pickler song. Colton, that was beautifully done! Two great performances so far!

Colton performed such a nice arrangement of the Rihanna/Eminem song, that I almost didn’t notice the mediocre singing.

  • sf3456

And another thing about Colton — I just hate his name.  Colton.  Makes me think of the Colts.  Makes me think of horses.

  • Anonymous

It wasn’t just you.  There are some amazing rearrangements of that song, but that wasn’t one of them.  Colton is playing the game, but unlike some of the others who have done this, like Kris and David, tonight he didn’t have the skill to pull off an interesting arrangement.  He was just changing the songs to score brownie points with those who will be impressed that he took on a song that’s known for being part of a rap.

Elise and P2 sound incredible on this- but damn, P2’s motions are so irritating….

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

P2 is so uncomfortable to watch.  It’s kind of hilarious.

  • http://twitter.com/nadski00 nadja

awful.. p2 and elise butchered the song

  • Listening

I loved Skylar’s performance her vocals near perfect and powerful. I like my country w/ only a bit of twang and that was the perfect amount.

Colton had a redemption performance from last week this was real good no slurred notes sang the words straight and his tone shined through only a couple points where I thought we might be crossing over to piercing/shrill but I still liked it. I think he does these ballad/ piano performances better than rock. In rock performances he tries to do too many tricks slurring and drawing out notes just messing them up. Unfortunately it seems he wants to be a rocker don’t think he can win singing rock style but him in the piano he has a real good chance.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Somebody just shoot me.  I actually like P2/Elise duet.  Of course Elise was the star here.

  • Anonymous

Elise struggled with the high notes.

  • http://twitter.com/ealbino ealbino

oh no…I have to run to listen to the GLEE version cause Darren Criss killed that song… P2 not so much!

  • Anonymous

P2 started out strong.. but in the end Elise proved ET > P2 for the second week in a row.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

“Somebody that I used to know” is my freakin favorite song right now!  I cant believe that they are singing it on Idol…Philip and Elise did great with it…very very nice.  The chick on the Voice did it a little better and I totally downloaded it…maybe I’ll download that version too…going to iTunes…

  • http://twitter.com/nadski00 nadja

no chemistry between p2 and elise in the song.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t think that worked at all. Phil didn’t know the words — eyes glued to the teleprompter the whole time…and Elise had pitch issues that I couldn’t get past.

  • sf3456

Wow.  Lindsey Pavao from The Voice did it better.

  • Anonymous

I think that’s pretty neat that P2 let the lady choose the song!

  • Anonymous

I think Elise and Phillip may be boinking.

  • Anonymous

“that’s because she’s a better singer than me” – phillip
“NO NO NO NO NOOOO!” – randy

does that mean randy thinks p2 is a better singer than elise? smh

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

I do prefer P2 with someone else than him alone.

  • justmefornow

    Uncomfortable.
T-rex arms from P2, and Elise looks like Lois Griffin from family guy. lol

(This both from my daughter watching for the first time tonight! I’m having more fun from her comments, than from the show!)

  • http://twitter.com/ealbino ealbino

you should download Glee’s Darren Criss version. Much better!

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Am I supposed to be falling all over P2 and his “aw shucks” antics?  I started off really disliking Colton and being on the fence about P2, but now they are switching places for me.   Colton is very studied about the Idol game, but at least he wants it to some degree.

  • Anonymous

None of those comments make sense.

  • Anonymous

Yikes, Phillip really got screwed on that duet.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    *BANG!*  lol

  • Anonymous

I didn’t notice that.  But I’m glad Elise got a chance to shine with her song choice.

  • Anonymous

That duet was not good at all. I still like Phillip but Elise just is not that talented.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

Oh I totally will download Darren’s version too…I’ll just put them all on a loop..just like Steven Tyler!

  • Anonymous

You do realize the difference between a live performance and a studio performance that uses autotune, right?

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

Either way, as much as I don’t like P2, I HATE when they declare in a duet who is better. I find it disrespectful, and honestly creates an awkward moment. Don’t know, just don’t like that.

  • Anonymous

I thought his singing was mediocre too.  But he’s cute so that’s all that matters.

  • Anonymous

preach it. and knowing glee, they go crazy with that shit.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

I’ll be here all week.  Heh

  • justmefornow

I guess you have to be 17. lol.
    She’s making me laugh regardless.

  • Valentin432

I’m kind of nervous for Jessica here, she will have to be great for people to connect with this song.

  • waynestrong

that duet was awful, Phillip was like nails on a chalkboard. If you want to listen to a good “somebody that I used to know” cover check out Pentatonix

  • fuzzywuzzy

For the first time since Idol started, I have no favorite left (Erika was mine, but she left way too early).  Since it’s likely going to be a P2 vs. Colton finale, this may be the first year that I don’t watch the finale.  I honestly don’t care which one of them wins.

  • hayes

Oh shit Phillip is shaven! Did somebody tell him to do that or did he shave on his own, because you know, he’s just being himself?
Yeah that song wasn’t gonna do anything for Phillip, but I like that he agreed to the song. To be honest, with his style of singing I don’t think he has a lot of options as far duets with anyone on the show is concerned.

  • steph6449

Lol. Somehow I misheard Jessica’s friend (relative?) and thought she said that “burping” on the American Idol stage was so strange to see. Vs. “her being” on the AI stage.

  • http://twitter.com/nadski00 nadja

end of the day with the song by gotye, it’s beauty is in the pain in the voice. i felt no connection with the song and p2 and elise singing it..

Jessica is just amazing to me.  WOW  LOVE THE SONG TOO!

Jessica does have the best fashion sense of the 7. She always dresses great. Young but not childish, sexy but not trashy. Classy.

  • Anonymous

    She is a F*CKING STAR!

  • shell29

This girl needs to win.  Seriously.

  • sf3456

I like a few Jazmine Sullivan songs, but I’ve never heard this of one.  Jessica actually sounds a little like her on this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

Jessica is a star..I am not at all familiar with the song she sang but she could record it and make it a hit…the girl has style too

  • fuzzywuzzy

Very good performance by Jessica.  Don’t know the song, but she sounded good singing it.  lol

  • Valentin432

Wow, Jessica loves that song and it showed in her performance.

  • loosegoose

What are the odds Steven forgets where he is about 10 times a day?

  • Anonymous

Jessica was amazing, but JLo was right. She still hasn’t had an OMG STANDOUT HOLY COW KELLY CLARKSON’S NATURAL WOMAN/STUFF LIKE THAT THERE 1-2 punch this season. She needs to get on it.

  • hayes

Best performance of Jessica to date, for me. Probably because I don’t know that song and I don’t have anything to compare it to. But daaaamn, this girl is a star.

JLo needs to STFU. Jessica doesn’t need a “Joshua-type” performance. She can have as much of an impact without an over-the-top performance.

  • Anonymous

Technically Jessica sounds great but there is just no connection for me.

  • Trina

Even more reason theyre idiots LOL

  • Patroo

After watching Colton’s performance, which I thought was his idol ‘moment’ up to now, I just ask myself this question: What is Brett Loewenstern doing nowadays?

  • Anonymous

i can’t believe how READY she is at 16. good friggin god.

  • Valentin432

YESS, JOshua will sing that song!

  • Anonymous

I guarantee Jessica and Colton will be the final 2 with either Joshua or P2 being in 3rd.

  • Anonymous

The control that Jessica has is amazing.  I’m with Jennifer, I want to see her do something amazing.  She’s showing that she’s a great technical singer, and that she has a lot of soul, but I think that she has a few more “Moment” performances in her.  Maybe the problem is that she makes everything look so easy.

I also love that she picked a song that means a lot to her, even if it’s not one that a lot of people know.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/GED45R7LV4QERBS74RT6INK65I fed

it’s just unbelievable how READY she is at 16. good friggin lord. imagine how much better she’ll be in 5 years. it’s bind boggling.

  • http://twitter.com/ealbino ealbino

Wow…Jessica….I can’t believe the pitch, the control, the style, the voice.! Loved it. loved her clothes, her make up… ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

  • Anonymous

Sadly I’m the same. I mean I have my AI11 faves(Heejun and Hollie), but I’m not super invested this year. AI10(Like AI7 and AI8 before it)really spoiled me last year. Don’t care who wins and I probably won’t be buying any music from this group either. Sigh. I guess there’s always next year. :(

Also. IMO. There is not very many distinct voices in this group, and the few that do possess distinct voices just aren’t for me.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

I was really impressed with Skylar…then Colton…now Jessica.  I feel the danger with Jessica is that all her songs will start to sound the same.  J-LO’s right, she has yet to have a breakthrough performance….and to my untrained ear she’s been PERFECT every week.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I don’t ever want to hear anyone say Jessica’s emotionless again. LOL That was not a robot performance.

The girl needs songs with SOUL.

    I want her to win.

And I want to smack JLo for undermining her right there. STFU.

  • Anonymous

I thought that was Jessica’s best performance so far. She is so young but she was able to dig into that song. I don’t want her to oversing like Joshua. What was so good about her performance tonight was that she didn’t overdo anything. And sounded stellar.

I liked the Philip-Elise duet because it was actually a song I wanted to listen to!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002033520082 Brian Thurman

WHat happened with Jessica? I kept falling asleep during her performances as I do every week lol

I hate the jackets they put Joshua in for the performance shows.

  • halo9125

Dear American Idol: please buy Joshua a jacket that fits. Sincerely, me.

I’m the complete opposite.  This is the first time I’ve really cared since season 8.  Haley was enjoyable but really didn’t care.

“From Fantasia to Mantasia”, oh that was so cute. lol.

  • http://twitter.com/nadski00 nadja

i agree with you…i think her and joshua are the best technical singers…but i sit and watch week by week waiting for tht connection but just havn’t felt it….hopefully it will happen…but in the meanwhile can’t jump on the jessica bandwagon. i don’t think her personality has been featured as much as the others and perhpas this is a contributing factor but i don’t feel i “know” her as much as the others hence feeling no connection

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

awwww Joshua.  His reaction to Fanny was priceless!  So cute!

  • sf3456
Dear American Idol: please buy Joshua a jacket that fits. Sincerely, me.

He likes to wear his jackets snug.  Remember, they said that weeks ago when Hilfiger first appeared.

  • Anonymous

Why are these idiots not standing for that?

My theory is that they’ve been told by the producers to temper their response to her, because they will go overboard with pimping her at the end of the season.  Maybe around top 4.

  • Anonymous

If you don’t want to be connected you won’t feel a connection.

  • Anonymous

Soooo agree with tinawina!  She sang with conviction on that!!!

i think i sense some tentativeness in her overall though…can’t put finger on it but it’s endearing to me since she’s soooooo young.

  • Troy Mccoy

Okay, I wish someone shut Jennifer up. How is she is going to say to Jessica we need to see some Joshua type performance. Where the hell has she been for the last few weeks. Jess may not be my favorite but she had a Joshua type performance with the whitney song and she just had a moment with this song. She also had  a moment with beyonce song. Jess is one of the few who had a lot of moments and is fairly consistant.

Please someone cut jennifer long drawn out thoughts. She has a problem summing up her thoughts with a few words.

  • Trina

YEEES GO JOSH! This is exactly what I wanted from him!

Wow. Joshua was amazing. Probably my favorite performance ALL SEASON. From any of them.

  • steph6449

I don’t know this song that Joshua is doing.

This is a modern song? It seems kind of retro. As usual he sounded really good, though performance was a touch awkward here or there.

Seemed like he was having fun with something more upbeat than in the past couple weeks. As he did in that great duet with Jessica.

ETA: lmao at Steven giving Joshua advice to get the phone number.

Jessica’s song was definitely one of the best performances this season, but no SO. But WTF, they stand up for Joshua, who did a fine job, but wasn’t his best, and definitely not the best tonight.  Makes no sense at all.

Colton and Skylar are doing another duet?  Well, I’m going to watch Joshua’s performance again.

  • Anonymous

I don’t get the overboard love for Joshua.  He’s just ok for me and not unique.  The judges are definately working a plan.  I notice them looking at each other to make sure they are in sync.  One week they diss a performer and the next they compliment.  They are trying to manipulate the votes for sure.

  • Anonymous

Joshua killed it. Love that Bruno Mars song and he did a great job with it.

  • loosegoose

So if P2 and Elise teamed up, and Colton and Skylar are dueting, will Hollie join Jessican and Joshua in a trio?

A trio with Hollie, Jessica and Joshua should be good.

Love, love, love Joshua. Great singing and a fun performance. Finally a viable R&B contender on AI! Jessica was really good too. I was a bit surprised of the tempered praise for her as well. I thought she was emotionally connected to the song and delivered.

  • http://twitter.com/nadski00 nadja

y are they not mixing up the duet pairings from last wk????

  • sf3456

I’m still on a Joshua high.  Good lord.  That was an awesome performance.

  • steph6449

Skylar’s dress has almost exactly the same skirt cut as her first dress tonight. Interesting.

Not sure I am liking Colton in the Jason Aldean part on this. And Skylar kind of lost it a bit there on the high part.

After this I have no hope of recognizing any songs, heh.

  • rayni

Oh gee…Skylar is so flat she is making Colton sound good :(

  • loosegoose

Two nice outfits in a row for Skylar. Kudos to whoever persuaded her to change her style.

  • steph6449

I hope not. More Joshua and Jessica would be very cool.

Liked Josh, but since I’ve seen the original multiple times by Bruno Mars and luved it so much, I can’t get that excited.

Can Skylar sing anything but a country song? I’m really tired of these country duets.

Except for Skyler’s tendency to scream in certain places it was pretty good.  They harmonize well.

Isn’t Colton gay? Did I miss something?

    Jessica was solid tonight.

Joshua picked the perfect song.  Not sure if it deserved a standing O, but Randy gets what Randy wants.  It was good so I won’t complain.

Maybe it’s just me but Colton and Skylar’s duet was a hot mess.  I disagree with JLo and Steven Tyler.  Randy hit it on the head with his comments, if you ask me.  Skylar sounded great on her solo part, but together it was a mess. Many missed notes and pitch issues throughout. Can we never see those 2 perform together again? First performance of the night I would never want to ever hear again.

Does anyone else always think of Jodie Foster when they see Hollie?  Not just her looks, but her entire demeanor, tone of voice, etc.

Edit…I had never seen her interviewed in length like she just was, and didn’t even know she was a brit, so I don’t have quite the same thoughts as I did…although now that she is singing, the way she sings, reminds me of the way Jodie Foster talks if that makes sense.

With all the duets (and I even haven’t watched it yet b/c I’m from the West Coast), I gotta wonder: Can’t these producers get any effing creative? Seriously, it’ll be more of a challenge on the contestants’ part, instead of putting them with their predictable duet buddies.

  • loosegoose

Not at all! Hollie is the delicate wood sprite, as one reviewer calls her. Jodie has delicate features but comes across to me as much stronger and very determined.

Umm first off who thought Skylar and Colton were dating I’ve only heard of those rumors from Ryan. Skylar and Colton have no romantic chemistry between them. I watched Colton’s facial expression the whole time and he looked dead inside just a blank. Skylar and Colton’s duet was better than Elsie’s and Phillip’s but that wasn’t hard to do b/c Elsie’s voice didn’t work w/ that song so it was a mess and she kept doing a weird thing of raising the notes and chopping it up.

So far everyone sounded much better than when they sung by theirselves.

But they do look like good friends  but I don’t get a sniff of romantic interest between them.

  • Anonymous

Via roomie “The only thing perfect about this performance is the guitarist.”

  • steph6449

Thanks on the age. 18 or 19 still gets partial creepy credit though when old(er) guys like Ryan are joking about who you are supposedly dating, or should be dating.
    .

Eesh. This is a Pink song? Hollie is making it sound just like anything else she’s done. No real personality coming through in it. Better though from last week as far as the pitch issues.

  • Jayma Marie

you got that right… :) i just felt joshua is overpraised..

  • loosegoose

I like the vocals, but the tutu thingie is awful.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yikes.  This just isn’t working at all for me.

  • Anonymous

uh oh….hmmmmi dunno hollie.  i think it’s too slow.  she’s got a nice voice though and she looks prettier than usual.  nooooo on the skirt thing!

  • Valentin432

I don’t like what Hollie is doing with this song.

  • http://twitter.com/oldei Leo M P

I like the clumsiness (cute) of JSAN when she’s about to sit down again… same thing happened to Sweet Dreams when she’s? about to close the red door.

Best Hollie performance in a long time.

  • Anonymous

..and Skylar wants to date Tim Tebow.  There’s a connection. ha

Hollie looks gorgeous.  I’m not sure about the performance though.

  • loosegoose

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Didn’t really dig the Colton/Skylar duet and I wish they would stop pushing the dating angle when they seem to have anti-chemistry (romantic anyway) to me.   I would never have heard of these supposed rumors if the show didn’t tell me about them every 5 seconds.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

Perfect song choice for Hollie.  Pink’s version was a little grittier tho which I think is what is missing…I do think this was her best performance in a while tho

  • Anonymous

I think that Hollie will come alive in her performance with Joshua and Jessica.   She’s not putting a lot into this performance.

  • Trina

When the first thing out of Jennifers mouth is “you look beautiful”..uh oh.

  • Anonymous

Where was the emotion in that song?! Ugh….Hollie is going home this week, I think.

  • rayni

Aww, poor sweet Hollie getting the crap judging :(

  • loosegoose

Wow, they are crapping all over her. What gives? She was a lot better than she’s been in weeks. Give her credit!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Hollie sounds great here, much better than the last few weeks but I still think she’s in trouble again tomorrow.  She just can’t seem to get off the ballad train.

always bad when jlo starts off you looked great.
steven – but u looked great
wow amazing critque from the judges

    NOT

  • Da 1 N Only

Hollie is such a pint sized Pia to me, both in positive & negative aspects.  Wonder  why Pia didn’t get these critiques last year.
Oh yeah, the judges favored Pia last season & wants to bus Hollie this season.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

I think the judges are throwing Hollie under the bus…u can easily tell who their favorites are

  • Anonymous

Let me catch that bus, I need a ride.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Is P2 and Colton making goofy faces at the camera supposed to be endearing or something?  lol

Hollie was much improved…  but overall just not enough emotion for me.  Everyone has been so solid tonight for the most part it might just not be good enough.

    Pimp Spot again? Elise FTW!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

Poor Hollie. I really want her to do well.  She definitely has the talent.

Because Jessica wasn’t in the competition then.

  • shell29

Hollie was good…much better than last week.  I liked the last note at the end.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, but I did not like that, Hollie.  It was kinda limp.

  • Anonymous

I sm sure he will be chasing after her any day now,lol

  • Trina

LOL my husband said that sounded like Celine Dion trying to sing P!nk.

  • fuzzywuzzy

He technical singing was a lot better, but I thought that she just sucked all of the life out of that song.

  • hayes

I don’t think Hollie is necessarily bad, but when the other 6 in the competition is bringing it like they do, she’s bound to get left behind. She’s just really pale in comparison with the others.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Hollie had more emotion at the end, and it was better than last week. She was better than that critique IMO.

  • Kirsten

Seriously, it’ll be more of a challenge on the contestants’ part, instead of putting them with their predictable duet buddies.

Seriously. Is Colton going to be forced to sing country duets until either he or Skylar gets eliminated (who will be forced to go country with Skylar then)? Is Elise going to have to figure out every week how to build a duet around P^2s grunting and bellowing while trying not to laugh as he creeps around the stage? At least Joshua and Jessica are well matched and each get to sing in their wheelhouse.

I like the concept of the duets because I want to hear some interesting combinations. I gave them a pass with the two country kids last  year because it was such an obvious choice and they at least mixed up the other duet partners. If we are going to keep the same partners until the get eliminated, that’s just annoying.

  • Anonymous

where have you been? the judges never give the female contestants credit for rearranging a song.

  • Anonymous

I thought Hollie sounded better tonight but she was singing it so slow. But compare her to some train wrecks we’ve experienced in past Idol seasons and she really isn’t terrible. Just that others are picking better songs and giving more interesting performances.

Elise is last tonight which makes me nervous. I hope she does something emotional.

  • Anonymous

Joshua was so good, shows he can sing more than ballads and gospel and Jessica also went in new direction, love these two.

  • Anonymous

    Will P2 sound the same?

  • Anonymous

i hope elise is singing the maroon 5 song. i think that her and adam have a similar quality to their voices. i can’t pin point what it is, but i can totally hear her singing it… and i don’t want her doing y&i since haley did it last year and they’ve had similar arcs so far.

  • Anonymous

Sick of the judges trying to throw Hollie under the bus. She actually sang that really well.

She sounded nice, but she took all of the energy out of the song.  I do agree that the comments seemed to be geared towards knocking her out of the competition tomorrow.

    P2 makes my skin crawl.

  • too-cool-for-school

    Welcome back, P2! Loved it!

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol  P2 started that last note like he was retching.

  • http://twitter.com/thecinel Cindi

I like Phil. This was certainly something different. I thought he did a great job.

  • Chris

I think the producers lack creativity… clearly they are trying to capture the Scotty/Lauren phenom from S10 by putting Colton/Skylar together.

At least switch it up, like the bromance with Heejun/P2. Or the friendship between Jessica/Deandre.  But trying to force the “country cuties” angle again is just lame.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

My question is would they bother to save Hollie this week if she has the lowest votes?  My gut would be no because while I think the critique was harsher than it needed to be and she’s far from trainwreck status, she is being left behind by most of the others at this point (excluding P2 since I don’t even know how to rate him).  Except they have to use the save to keep the show on schedule and if they don’t use it this week than next week holds no suspense.

  • http://twitter.com/deadspotter goldiver

Can we just repalce J-LO with Mary J. Blige??

I know people are gonna be hatin’ on P2 but I thought that was a lovely performance.

  • http://twitter.com/nadski00 nadja

p2 goodlucking guy, can listen to maybe a song of his …but my gosh if i had to listen to a whole album of his I might just have to smash my head against a wall o.0

  • Anonymous

the secret is to NOT look at P2 while he sings.  why did no one tell me that?  it was ok.  small o and small k.  verrrry small.

  • shell29

For a brief moment I found myself liking a P2 performance…then it all went to crap in the end.  Ugh.

  • Anonymous

THANK YOU JLO. Great critique of P2 there.

  • Anonymous

I thought this was Phillip’s best performance in weeks.

  • Listening

Hollie just can’t connect to songs she’s too focused on singing technically perfect. This song was it for her it was the story of her idol journey and she still couldn’t portray the emotion. Every week Hollie has had to deal w/ the judges and mentors telling her she wasn’t good enough that she was missing an important piece to her performances all she had to do was draw on that and it never came through. At the beginning of the song I almost felt emotion peaking through just shimmering below the surface but she never shattered it. And in the end she totally lost any emotion she had and just went for the notes. It’s frustrating she could of had a moment but nope.

Once again the judges claimed she didn’t hit her notes I thought they were spot on hmm are they still trying to throw her under the bus. It’s obvious that of those who remain she’s their least favorite.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

Yay, JLo, wow.  She said it…he’s sounding the same every week.  I am actually muting P2 because it’s gotten so repetitive…

  • Anonymous

Wasn’t a good performance to me. Just kinda meh.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Oh, Phillip. Well, it was certainly his style.

  • loosegoose

They can find another way to fit the schedule, like the Idol Gives Back week where nobody went home.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/GQ4GCMANGXQBSGT2LCFYDYHWPM Beach Ammo

I thought Hollie was great…love how she changed the song up

  • Trina

Oh hey its P2 growling and looking constipated while strumming his guitar. that was more interesting the first few times.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Hmmm … the judges are being less than glowing about P2 and are saying that he’s sounding the same every week.  WTF is going on?  lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

Way to go Phillip squared.  I liked his performance but it wasnt his best for sure.  Still he is safe he will be there in the end.

  • Anonymous

So Steven thought Phillip (who sings the same thing each week) sounded better than Hollie (who actually sang better with something different, and rearranged the song).

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/GED45R7LV4QERBS74RT6INK65I fed

figures that the best p2 has done in weeks is the week that jlo and randy chooses to criticize.

i give up. he still should go soon though lol

  • loosegoose

Wow, the judges actually didn’t gush all over over Phillip.

  • fuzzywuzzy

How can you tell the difference? lol

  • Anonymous

Awww…. I like Jlo… She gives pretty good critiques and she is so personable.

  • Anonymous

They’ve chosen Colton as their white guy of choice.  Like Jessica is their big  voiced female of choice.

  • Anonymous

Wow talk about flat and boring. Maybe the bus has changed course!

  • CircadianDomination

The de-pimping of PP has begun.

  • Troy Mccoy

Once again Hollie is the only one to get crapped all over and thrown  under the bus and Colton and Skylar get good critique for that flat lack luster duet.

I see who the judges want to go home now. Can they make this be any more obvious.

Finally I am hearing some P2 critique. This is way overdue. I swear it sounds like he sings the same thing every week.

  • Anonymous

The middle and end of the song was bettr than the beginning. I think Phillip and Jimmy just are meshing about what works for him

  • Valentin432

Best performance in 2 weeks, I still think his Still Rainin’ performance was better.

Aside from last  week when he sounded bad, P² is a consistent performer, I’ll give him that.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

I thought Hollie sounded great tonight. Kinda upset the judges were so meh on her. Same with P2, and I normally cannot stand him.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Trying to apply logic to the judges’ comments is only going to drive you crazy.  I know.  I stopped doing it years ago.  lol

  • Anonymous

Colton and Skyler’s duet did not get that great of a critique.

  • http://twitter.com/ealbino ealbino

Not bad Phillip. Better because he’s a cutie.. LOL

  • Banished

Thought Phillip was awesome, (can’t believe I’m saying this because I agree with Randy) in the beginning, but it all went to pot when he started screaming. At least he can sing, and he’s very charming. If it’s between Phillip and Colton, I’d take Phillip any day, BUT Joshua was much better than both tonight!

  • Anonymous

Idol really needs to stop shipping contestants. Especially ones that have no chemistry whatsoever. I’m supposed to believe that Colton and Skylar are in love? Yeah…Sorry…They’re no Caley. lol

Speaking of which. These duets/trios are doing nothing for me this year. It’s very hard to top the all around brilliance of Moanin’ though. Since it was such a special moment that didn’t even take place during a performance show.

  • Anonymous

WOW!  It’s so obvious that the judges are getting their critiques right off the internet.  Too bad the critiques don’t actually match the performances for THIS week.

  • http://twitter.com/nadski00 nadja

all this hollie and p2 throwing under the bus…CMON ELISE….bring us home on the VENGA BUS….hoping for a amazing end of show form her

  • fuzzywuzzy

I would be amazed if that were true, but hope springs eternal!  lol

  • Anonymous

I think the issue with Phillip is he’s complacent. He doesn’t seem to care, really, whether he stays or goes. And he seems to pretty much give off the attitude that regardless of what the judges or Jimmy say, he knows he’ll get voted through.

  • Anonymous

LOL! I really do have a headache.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

Hope Elise brings it this week! Don’t want to see her go home, think she’s too good to go home just yet.

  • Anonymous

    and amen to that.

  • Anonymous

UNbelievable.  The judges apologized for their critique of Philip and Hollie has had three cold-blooded ones, straight up, for weeks.  Geez.  She is a kid.  This is gonna backfire; she will be safe this week.  (Even I feel bad for her that she got creamed on this performance, when she most connected to her song.)

  • Kirsten

Elise gets her third pimp spot when Joshua and Jessica have still never had one? Hopefully, it telegraphs what it did with Scotty last year…they don’t need no stinkin’ pimp spots because they are cleaning up on the votes.

  • shell29

The first part was bad, but the rest was interesting.

I had the opposite reaction…I thought the first part was sounding kinda decent but then he started doing his usual P2 thing towards the end and sounded a mess.  I’m pleasantly surprised to see the judges not gushing over a P2 performance for a change.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

I don’t think Jessica can sing up tempo songs, just my opinion.

  • Anonymous

I love Joshua, but tonight I just didn’t like the song; I thought it was a bad choice and didn’t do him justice.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Maybe I’m biased, but whenever anyone on Idol tries to sing any of Kelly’s songs they don’t do very well.  Ouch!  Joshua and Jessica were super pitchy on that harmony.  Hollie was pitchy on her opening verse too.  This is not good.

  • CircadianDomination

That was a trainwreck… Are the judges seriously praising it? WHAT?

  • Kirsten

I hate to say it but this Jessica/Joshua/Hollie trio is a trainwreck.

This was never a good idea from the start. None of them have the rocker chick edge that this song requires.

  • Anonymous

    P2 = Snooze-fest

Joshua was solid as always during that trio… other than that the whole thing was BAD.  Jessica? WTH happened? Worst I think she’s ever sounded.  Hollie wasn’t that much better.  But I’m defintely shocked by how off Jessica sounded.  Joshua really shined above both of them.

Overall the duets were not anything compared to how good they were last week.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

Ok, Elise doing GaGa will be GREAT! She has that type of voice, that is for sure.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

I know. They are trying so hard to be X-Factory. I liked the simplicity of it before, now they do too much on stage with the flames and lighting. Soon they’ll divide the contestants into categories. Boys under 25, girls under 25, and singers 25-29. Heck, maybe they’ll rehire Simon.

  • Anonymous

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :-)  It’s a great song!

  • Banished

I was all for Hollie early on, but she’s just getting eaten up by the others’ stage presence and comfort. Hollie can sing but she just looks awkward. It’s a shame because I think all of these contestants can sing well. It comes down to who can sell now.. I think Hollie is done, then sadly, Joshua, or Elise..

  • hayes

Oh lawd. Just a bad song choice for these three. I mean, with these voices, they couldn’t pick a better song to showcase that? Nothing against the song, but what a missed opportunity.

That just confirms what we have always known… Jessica can’t sing when there is a beat/tempo

  • steph6449

That trio song was ~ok, not amazing. I thought both girls sounded really off in the opening, almost wondered if there were microphone malfunctions.

But it got a lot better once they worked themselves into it. Still it was too busy or something with all three of them to really feel like a normal enjoyable performance.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

They did it better than the singers on Dancing with the Stars.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

Anyone notice how ever since Heejun was eliminated, Phillip has been giving worse performances and the judges have been critiquing him more?

Also, I feel like all the contestants on the show are friends with each other and Jessica is just like the outcast. Even during eliminations, she cties for everyone and no one hugs her. Heck, even during the trio package, Joshua and Hollie were hugging and talking and ignored her. #ioveranalyzethesethings

  • Stavros

WOW. Sooooooo sick of Steven not just critiquing Hollie harshly but being flat out rude to her.  Just lost a lot of respect for him.  And Josh was pitchy in that trio, that one doesn’t go to him.

Well, people don’t watch the Grammy’s and VMA’s for simple performances.  The problem for X-Factor and AI is that these people are amateurs so they, for the most part,  don’t do the performing stuff as well as would be needed to sell this stuff.

  • http://twitter.com/thecinel Cindi

I have to disagree. That trio never got better. Jessica sang over everyone and they were all pitchy. The harmonies were a mess.

  • Trina

Elise gets her third pimp spot when Joshua and Jessica have still never had one? Hopefully, it telegraphs what it did with Scotty last year…they don’t need no stinkin’ pimp spots because they are cleaning up on the votes.

And numerous pimp spots didnt help James all that much.

Haley survived the bus because she came out fighting, Hollie is nowhere near as good as Haley.

I wouldn’t say Jessica is the outcast, but unfortunately for her DeAndre was her best friend on the show, so it’s the first week she’s without her closest Idol friend and she’s likely adjusting.

That said, last trio was awful. That might be the worst I’ve ever heard Jessica and Joshua sing.

    Elise>Haley

  • Anonymous

    ELISE FTW!!!!!

  • steph6449

Although I thought Jessica had some rough spots on that trio, I actually liked it better than her slow song earlier that just kind of bored me even though she sounded fine.
    .

Elise’s song, idk. There were parts I liked and parts where it felt like she was working too hard. It’s really tough to tell much without knowing the songs at all.

Just listening to the judges, makes me think they are trying to avoid a Pia situation this year. Though they do have that save, so hmm.

i think randy had an orgasm oh oh oh

  • Anonymous

    Disagree there.

  • loosegoose

I thought Steven was going to say “You took a song that was so simple and effortless and turned it into something really hard.”

  • Anonymous

I liked Elise’s version (I love her soft, though)!  Fire the stylist!

  • Anonymous

I’m not.  She’s not perfect and I’m getting tired of them trying to make us believe she is the second coming……..

  • Anonymous

I predict Hollie, Josh and Skylar in the b3 and goodbye Hollie.

  • Anonymous

Colton is my least favorite of the remaining contestants.

  • Anonymous

I hate when people say stuff like this, but that was no where as good as Haley’s performance.  Not that it had to be, or that Elise is competing against Haley.

Elise sounded good, but the song was boring.  She didn’t put anything in it.  No passion, no vocal imperfections like she had on the first Adele song that she did, it was just bare.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Best of the night in no particular order (solos), Jessica, Elise, and Skylar.
    Worst…Hollie.

Unless Hollie gets pitty votes that are just enough to save her from elimination, she is TOAST tomorrow.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1468223561 Jim Benson

    For me my top 3:
    1- Jessica
    2- Elise
    3- Colton

    Bottom:
    Hollie

  • Anonymous

    1) Jessica
    2) Joshua
    3) Colton
    4) Elise
    5) Phillip
    6) Skyler
    7) Hollie

I Think the bottom 3 may be Hollie, Phillip, and Skyler with Hollie leaving us tomorrow.

  • justmefornow

The pimp spot only works if they don’t change the performance order at the last minute and don’t change the phone numbers to match.

    Hasn’t ever happened since. Hmm…

  • Banished

Wow a lot of people not feelin’ Elise. She was better than all of the girls other than Jessica. If I were the producers and had to pick a closer, I’d go for Joshua though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1563608238 Shirley Tomlinson

I couldn’t hear Hollie half the time, and Jessica’s mic was turned up so loud she drowned the others out. Weird.

that’s right randy elise is back, now people need to just vote for her, or i will slash some tires, same goes for josh

I wonder if Haley is sitting at home remembering how they tried to crush her when she sang this song and throwing things at the TV.

  • Da 1 N Only

Favorite of the night: Too many to pick just one (great idol night)

Worst of the night: Easily Jessica/Joshua/Hollie on “Stronger”

  • Anonymous

Hated Haley, so not really concerned about comparing them, but I thought Elise did okay.  It didn’t blow me away, but I thought it was far better than last week.

  • Anonymous

I agree, he was rude.  The only good part is that in a way it is merciful, because who wants to put that girl through that another week?  She would be golden in another year, but the other singers are just too good this year.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I still don’t know who is going home tomorrow. Or even who is B3. I guess it depends on how much people count duets?

  • Anonymous

Tonight was a great night! I was worried, because contemporary themes can sometimes be disasters, but I liked everyone for the most part, although I didn’t like the duets this week as much as last week.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

Man, I really enjoyed tonight. I thought everyone was great, even P2! Everyone is so good this season. Love it! :)

steven needs to stop smoking the medical marajuana before the show!!!  imagine if paula was there with him and simon!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1563608238 Shirley Tomlinson

I actually loved Joshua tonight. Phillip is still my favorite, and I love Hollie although I like her better in her higher range where she shows off the glory notes. Colton did well tonight. Skylar was good, but country music isn’t my cup of tea. And Jessica still annoys me. Elise’s voice sounds like she is screaming. I know alot of people like her though.

  • sf3456

But it might be fun to see his reaction to coming in last, and having to sing for survival.

It might be, but that’ll never happen.  They’ll pull a Casey.  They’ll cut him off before he could even sing.

  • Anonymous

Yippee!  James Durbin tomorrow.  He better be good!

another great performance from Phillip. hoping Phillip and Elise make the final two!

JHud tomorrow eh?  This was the very week she was eliminated season 3.   I sense a Huff elimination coming on. Heh

  • Anonymous

I am voting for Hollie, Elise, Joshua, Colton, and Skylar.

Hollie will get extra votes thanks to the judges’ stupidity.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

I couldn’t agree with you more Mase Wallace. Elise was and is GREAT. VOTE ELISE/Joshua.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

Aside from nice moments with Elise and P2, I thought the duets were meh tonight. But luckily everyone performed so well. Again, a great group. I don’t know who I want to see go home.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

My gut is we are going to see a Skylar, Hollie, Elise B3.  I still don’t think Elise is safe since most everybody did well tonight.  I’d personally like to put P2 in the B3, but I don’t think it’s likely to happen.  Going home- Elise or Hollie.

The duets/trio were underwhelming tonight, which is odd since I think the duets/trios were really good the past few weeks.

  • Anonymous

That trio of Hollie, Joshua, and Jessica wasn’t perfect, but I still found it somewhat enjoyable. Though tonight’s collabs only further proved that Moanin’ most likely won’t be topped.

Elise’s performance of “You And I” definitely wasn’t superior(It was good, but not OMG amazing or anything like that.)to Haley’s, but of course she gets praised for it. Whilst Haley was thrown under the bus last year after giving a wonderful performance. And no mention of Haley singing it last year either huh? I give up… :/

  • Anonymous

    For me;

    Top-
    Jessica/Joshua
    Colton
    Elise
    Skylar
    Phillip
    Hollie

  • Anonymous

Jessica, Elise, and Colton were my favorites tonight, followed by Joshua.
Really didn’t dislike anyone but Hollie was the most forgettable.

I’m not sure what people are talking about that Elise was shouty at the end, she was totally in control of her singing and actually ended on an intimate note. I do think she has to sing larger because of the way the theater is set up.

  • JJ123

The judges are totally programmed…it’s like they already have what they’re going to say to who planned out regardless of the actual performance. Why do they dislike Hollie so much? I mean she definitely needs to emote more but they act like she’s awful. It seems like they were going to rag on Phillip because they were called out by Jimmy last week, I thought it was a good performance and I thought he sounded better than Elise on STIUTK. Sklylar was so blah I paused so I could FF a few minutes later. I don’t always like Colton’s voice but I thought he sounded really good tonight.

  • http://twitter.com/thecinel Cindi

    Here’s my take on tonight:

    1. Joshua
    2. Colton
    3. Philip
    4. Elise
    5. Hollie
    6. Skylar
    7. Jessica

1 and 2 are interchangeable. I think bottom three will be Hollie, Skylar and Elise and Hollie will be going home.

  • idolstruck

    my bottom 3 are
    hollie – plain boring
colton – easily forgettable voice & trying hard too much
jessica – she sounds always the same as if she’s always auditioning

  • hayes

I think we’ll see someone hit B3 for the first time tomorrow.

  • Anonymous

    Totally agree with you!

  • Anonymous

I loved Haley but Elise did much more with the song tonight than Haley did. Loved how she started with the piano as well, starting quiet and ending quiet. She told a story which is what good singing is all about.

  • too-cool-for-school

Weighing in on the You + I debate, Haley for me! I like Elise but Haley’s studio recording of that song is one of my all time favorites.

  • pj

    Steven was clearly high.  ;-)

My bottom three would be Hollie, Phillip,  and Colton with Colton going home.  Won’t happen, but that’s how I see it.  Poor Hollie is toast unless her fans save her and Skylar or Elise get the boot.  The Elise pimping was palpable, and I say that even though I like her.

And yes, even though Haley sang it better, it doesn’t matter.  Haley has a record contract and we’ll see how her album is when it comes out.  Is she getting any spins?  I should probably go to the numbers thread.  LOL.

  • Anonymous

Joshua was by far the best of the night.  I  also liked Philip.  Hollie’s voice is still one of my favorites but I think it is time for her to go.  She handles criticism so well but I don’t want her to have to do it anymore.  Painful.  Skylar, Colton, Jessica and Elise were just neutral–no comment–type of performances.

  • Anonymous

I actually thought tonight was a bit…trainwrecky. I didn’t like the majority of the songs tonight. The group performances really highlighted a lot of the weaknesses each contestant had and did more harm than good in my appreciation of them. The Hollie/Joshua/Jessica trio especially, that was just awful.

  • Anonymous

    My opinions tonight…
    1. Joshua
    2.Elise
    3. Jessica
    4, Skylar
    5, Colton
    6.Hollie
    7. Phil…usually my least faves are Colton and Skylar but I thought they were
    Better tonight

  • Anonymous

I really think that Jessica and Joshua are so good that they don’t need the last spot. And it seems no one on the show wants Elise in the bottom 3 again — at least this week.

  • Anonymous

I really think Hollie should be on Glee. Her bubbly personality would be perfect, and she can belt out all the ballads at sectionals lol.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

So, if they don’t use the save tomorrow, then everyone will know they have to use it next week. Interesting!

It’s like you read my thoughts.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

… but again she is too robotic, rename her robotica. She has planned every move she makes to a tee. Also, getting so tired of these ballads every week, when she does happen to sing a up tempo song, it is pitchy.

  • Anonymous

After listening to Elise’s strained take on ‘You and I,’ went to youtube and replayed Haley’s version and really there is no comparison.

Haley was far superior yet was panned by the judges, while Elise’s overly strident version praised by the same trio of talking heads.

Yet another example of the illogical inconsistency propelling this show into medioccrity.

It is no longer about the singing, and hasn’t been for the past couple of years.
The trio’s blatant attempt to manipulate the outcome has moved to the forefront and has become the dominate theme undermining American Idol.

  • Anonymous

Do the judges just have this week and next for save? Or does up to top 5 mean at top 5?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

P2 is now open to change…and now they say “don’t change.”  For the first time I felt sort of annoyed with the judges regarding him (when J-Lo said “That’s Stupid” when Iovine tried to play up the Colton vs Phillips thing, I agreed)…but I almost feel that he was being set up tonight.  I do think he had one of the weakest performances…but I don’t think he’ll be going home.  The judges almost sounded as if Hollie had just sang her swan song.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

     Today…and again tomorrow.

  • Anonymous

I did not think Jessica’s song tonight was all that.  It may have been more of a singer’s song, but I was surprised at the praise and I’m not sure the public will be excited about it.

  • justmefornow

Don’t worry, she won’t win anyway. Although I really don’t like P2, and Colton sucks, one of them is going to win.

This show is dying a slow death….

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

I wonder if the save will be used tomorrow. Unless it’s Hollie that leaves tomorrow I’m 100% sure they will use the save on anyone else but her

  • Anonymous

So Elise sang the same song as Haley tonight?  I’ll need to youtube that because I don’t remember at all.  Which isn’t saying anything about Haley.  Just my bad memory.  :)

  • Anonymous

I didn’t find Elise overly strident at all.

  • Anonymous

Elise  could have kept it a little quieter and I would have liked it better.  Given her experience on the show, I understand why she did the song the way she did, though.

  • Anonymous

Joshua, Jessica, and Elise were on their own level tonight. Joshua was amazing and I think the best of the night. Jessica was again flawless, but I agreed with Jennifer in that she needs to pull a Joshua and just go off the rails. Elise was Lady Elise once more.

I was totally on board with Hollie throughout the first 1/4 and then I just got bored with her again.

P2 needs to stop the Dave Matthews schtick. It’s getting annoying.

I missed Skylar but from the looks of the recap, it looks like every other Skylar performance so I’ll pass.

Colton’s whiny singing gets on my nerves. It just sounds like cats fornicating on the back porch.

The duets were alright. P2/Elise was great, mostly because of Elise. But I wish P2 would sing things like he does the duets. They’re always better than his solos.

Skylar/Colton was not very good. Skylar yells too much and I hate that Ryan keeps trying to make these non-existent romance rumors happen. It’s like  his insistence on always saying “high school student Aaron Kelly”, but worse.

Hollie/Joshua/Jessica was like 95% hot mess and 5% awesome. It was lulzy.

  • Anonymous

I thought this evening was 10x better than last week. Much better songs.

  • Anonymous

Joshua owned the night. He should have closed the show, not Elise. This guy is getting better every week.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

Just wondering but why is Colton and Phillip being compared? One is rock, another one is bluesy – totally different.

I guess Jimmy was right when he said they split the female vote but why did he disregard Joshua? He’s a male and I’m sure females vote for me too.

  • Anonymous

I miss MJ live blogging. Can’t wait to see her take on tonight’s show.

  • http://twitter.com/haleyr1992 Audrey

I think Elise and Haley both did great on the song, but I like Haley’s better… I was a little bored w/ Elise’s up until the end… Also, I’m noticing that the contestants this year have a lot longer to built the song. Elise’s version was 2:40 seconds while Haley only got about 1:50 for her’s.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

I think its funny how Elise and Haley are singing similar songs. You and I, I’m Your Baby Tonight, Zepplin. Except Haley was a little better and yet the judges treated her like she sang like crap

  • http://twitter.com/jepriy Jepoy Ramos

Joshua should’ve gotten the Pimp Spot

Here’s my ranking for this week

    1. Jessica – subtle take but with big impact
    2. Elise – her voice is so rich and full of character
    3. Colton – great Skylar Lane cover.
    4. Joshua – too OTT for me
    5. Skyler – glad to see her spunk again
    6. Hollie – wrong song choice…
    7. P2 – I wish he sang the Bruno Mars song instead.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

But with her accent, she’ll be another foreign exchange student and Glee continues to use that story plot for everyone who doesn’t have an “American” accent. Damian Mcginty, Charice, etc.

  • Anonymous

…..and have either of them opened the show?  I think not.  Why not?

  • Anonymous

Your post made me lol. And poor Aaron Kelly.  Geez that was so annoying during S9.

  • justmefornow

Probably because they know the vote totals and they are running away with it.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

I think Skylar might go home. She sang first and I already forgot her performance.

Hollie wasn’t that bad and I’m sure some people were pissed off that they completely threw her under the bus and will probably vote extra hard.

P2 even though he wasn’t good will be safe obv.

Elise, sang last, will be safe.

    Jessica, Joshua, Colton safe duh.

Best of the night for me:

    Skylar
    Phillip

    Bottom 3:

I think the bottom two will be Hollie and Elise. Elise will go despite the judges trying to get people to vote for her.  I don’t think it will work.

If nothing else, this night is emphasizing just how much better these contestants get when they are familiar with the songs.  They need to get the opportunity to go recent more often, Nigel.

  • Anonymous

Just like WLL doesn’t belong to Adam, You and I doesn’t belong to Haley either.

I don’t think the judges should be required to mention every artist that’s performed said song on Idol every time it’s sung.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_I3NQHPT3NA6VGKK22RCMTGOCII Tiffany

I didnt know many of the songs tonight, and didnt care for some of them.  Hated Joshuas song but love JOshua.  Liked Elise, Skylar did ok but I don’t think the song was important enough for this stage of the competition.  First time I actually liked Colton, didnt like P2 as usual but like him and Elise as a duet.  Jessica did good but I prefer her in uptempo.  Hollie was like a limp piece of celery in that song, emotion wise.  The “pretty, pretty please” in her song is supposed to be pleading and she just glided right over it like she was singing the Barney song.  I loved how no one seemed to wear Helfiger’s outfits they tried on.  lol  He must be embarrassed.  Randy, shut up!  Ryan, quit on the romance thing with Colton and Skylar, its old.

Did I miss the Ford commercial?

  • Anonymous

Joshua opened the show Whitney/Stevie week and Jessica has gone second before.

I believe Joshua and Jessica both have a great shot at making the finals, and even better is that it is driving those who always love the white males crazy and I love it lol.

  • Anonymous

I enjoyed the show, for the most part.  I didn’t always agree with the judges.  I didn’t think that Elise was so much the closer, but they want her highlighted for some reason.  Jessica and Joshua, even Colton were more worthy of being the closer if they are doling that honor out for that reason.  Elise was adequate tonight.  I though she pushed a bit too hard, and it wasn’t as great as the judges were told to say it was, lol.

Jessica is being set up to have this real breakthrough moment when truthfully she’s out-sang everyone consistently for weeks now, but this is idol and they grade on a curve where, you can dance around and oversing, and be rewarded for giving more….yet it doesn’t matter, I see, I think were this is going and it’s okay with me.

Colton sings better than P2 and has been out P2’ing, P2 with putting his spin on the songs he chooses.  He’s a wily competitor.

Hollie has a beautiful voice, but she can’t win this thing if she thinks that singing Perfect perfectly is the point.  She.just.doesn’t.get.it.  Sad, because her potential is enormous.

I wasn’t in love with Joshua’s singing tonight, but he’s a performer, and that’s fun to watch.

Skylar is no Kelly and no Kellie either.  Wasn’t jumping up and down for her tonight.

I enjoyed knowing what they would pick out of current music and I was most impressed with Jessica, Joshua, and Colton.  Can’t believe I just put impressed with Colton and I in the same sentence, but there it is.  That is the music that I buy, so, win for them.

  • idolstruck

what i love about Phillip and Elise are their distinctive raspy/bluesy voices. they are not that technically great as singers but you can feel their music pouring out from the inside and every time they sing you can see that they are performing and not auditioning or trying way too hard to impress.

i’m just not fond of joshua/jessica/hollie kind of singing, too much high pitch screeching voices all the time, so predictable/typical of any singing contest performances.

as for colton..i can’t even remember how he sings and how his voice sounds.

  • Anonymous

The girl needs songs with SOUL.

Amen, so pissed they won’t give her her props.  Seriously!  Jessica FTMFW!

  • Anonymous

Don’t understand the comment from JLo about Jessica having a Joshua type moment-to me she has a moment every week-beautiful voice with restraint when she needs it.
Hoping for a Jessica/Joshua finale but it will never happen.
Duets not so good this week-please do not sing Kelly Clarkson songs-just can’t compare-same for Carrie Underwood songs.
Poor Hollie-the judges really want her gone-she must be dividing votes with Jessica.Glad to see the judges finally call out Pillip on being the same each week-he comes across as not really caring one way or the other-I like to see some enthusiasm and I don’t see any with him.
Voting for the two J’s-they deserve it.

  • Karen C

I thought Skylar was very good and I think she might do very well, I think she shows some originality and versatility.  I liked Colton and Elise.  And I liked Joshua for the first time, he’s usually too gospelly for me.  I thought Hollie was good, much improved.

I think the only one I didn’t like tonight was Jessica. Didn’t like the song she picked, and I thought she was really off in the group song.

It’s hard to tell the Bottom 3, but I think Hollie might be the one to go, but I think there’s a strong chance of using the save soon, they were all pretty good.

  • Anonymous

My favorites tonight are: Elise, Colton, Philip, Joshua.

Bottom three: Skylar, Hollie, Elise. Going home: Hollie

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

I think its crazy funny how much Ryan and the judges try to ship Phillip/Elise and Colton/Skylar.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

Me too. Some people can’t stand that a more “serious” musician might not win this year. I say bring on the big voices because I missed them dearly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=195101108 Stefan Wind

Hollie needs work in her performing skills, but she is still the voice I enjoy listening to the most this season.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W4MMJWNTHBLWOL4WWKW32LZOEQ Tj

I don’t understand why the judges dislike Hollie so much, she never does as bad as they make it out be.

  • Anonymous

Okay but Jessica still hasn’t opened the show.  If they’re all that sure of her appeal why hasn’t she?

….and I love those white guys!  Both of them!

  • Anonymous

These judges are out of their minds.  I can critique Hollie on her stage presence, and I think she could use a little more emotional depth.  But pitchy?  Criticizing the way she hit those notes?  Hell no.

That’s why the room went quieter than I’ve ever heard it.  The entire audience was expecting good comments and they went into complete shock when they heard that nonsense.

OMG with Colton’s faux-angsty, skinny jeans wearing, stupid Flock of Seagulls hair bullshit and mediocre voice.  I can’t even with that guy.

Joshua was fabulous on the Bruno song.  And ya know what?  I won’t be at all surprised if he’s in the bottom 3 tomorrow.  (would that be a crime? Yes!  Is it absolutely possible with this show?  Yes!).

Jessica has an amazing voice, but I typically forget her and what she sang soon after.  P2 is what he is, and the people who love him are only going to love him more.  (Strangely, I think his duet with Elise was the best he’s sounded so far – to me anyway).

I liked Elise a lot.  (I loved Haley’s version of that song last year – I bought it and listened to it a lot.  But, they’re not competing in my head.)  I think Elise has a great voice, and she sounded fabulous on that duet.

I love Skylar.  She’s spunky and funny (and she’s got a gun!).  She has an easy performance style – she’s such a natural.  I think she’s also got a very strong voice, and I thought she did a great job on that Kellie Pickler song.  (And Yay! for Pickler having her song performed on the show from which she came!)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2DQ6QIUABIKODZJHZH4F24EBGY Joseph P

It’s about Hollie and Jess both splitting votes. We all know whom they want out. As for me, gonna vote for both in any case.

  • Anonymous

For a preacher’s kid he really knows how to work the stage.

Hmmmm, I need to take you to a church where they could teach Joshua a thing or two about working the stage.  I think he honed his craft, or learned his craft there….just saying.

  • http://twitter.com/holeigh_annie Holeigh

Tonight was both awesome for the scope of performances and hard to swallow because of the hypocrisy and just plain rudeness.  I thought Jessica was absolutely amazing, and loved Colton’s performance as well.  I thought Skylar was great, so that’s my top three.  Joshua was technically good and didn’t scream at me, so he can be 4th.  Hollie and Elise tie, and Philip was my least, he sounds the same every single week and for some reason, that’s okay to the judges.

Elise and Joshua were so pimped tonight, my head hurts from the constant manipulation.  Dad on stage and Jason Segal sending in videos?  Seriously now.  Elise should in no way have gone last, she was detached in the beginning and a screamy mess by the end.  Above and beyond that, it’s so obvious she ends up in B3 if she goes in the first half that they can’t dare let her be forgotten to the audience by not getting the pimp spot.  And I know we’re not supposed to compare, but the Lambert fans did, so: Haley >>>>>>>> Elise.  Randy kissing her ass about song choice after throwing Haley to the lions last year is so gross.

However, the most egregious display was the “judging” of poor Hollie.  She wasn’t even bad, just completely out of her zone, yet they acted like she slaughtered a goat up there.  I feel so bad for her…I hope this backfires and one of their chosen ones gets the axe.  Although then they can just use the save and fix things again.

Whew, that was quite a bitter rant, haha.

Tonight was just ok for me. I really missed Deandre.. I don’t have a favorite anymore, so I guess I will have to cheer for different contestants each week. For the first time I really liked Joshua tonight. I like upbeat fun songs. My husband really likes P2.

  • Anonymous

     I’m not surprised ;)

  • Anonymous

They have to use the save before Top 5 week or they lose it, right? So I wouldn’t be surprised if — no matter who ends up as the lowest vote getter this wee –, they will be saved. Hollie and Elise are the only 2 of the 7 I could possibly see them not saving — there’s no way they wouldn’t save PP, Colton, Jessica, Skylar or Joshua.

  • too-cool-for-school

Joshua (AMAZING!!!!!!) and Phil (GOOD!!!) were the two that stood out for me tonight. Elise certainly was good but I really prefer Haley’s version and I can’t get past that for some reason. Elise still rounds out my top 3, though!

Skylar was good but forgettable, mainly because she was in the death spot. Colton was Colton. Nothing really new or interesting about it. Hollie was really, really good but the judges obviously have their minds made up about who they want gone. I wasn’t jumping up and down for Jessica. Same as Colton, kinda… it didn’t really stand out to me as her best. Really overhyped by the judges, also.

The Phil/Elise duet was the best of the duets, but I wasn’t that into it. The trio was a disaster and it was really disappointing. Colton/Skylar do not sound good together to me at all, so I wish they would stop pairing them up.

  • Anonymous

I just watched Jessica’s performance because I couldn’t wait for West Coast time. Wow! is all I can say.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

Loved Elise! Voted for her. Jessica is the same as all the weeks before, getting bored with her. Phillip also sounds the same week after week. Joshua..glad he sang something a little out of his comfort zone. Hollie, she’s going home, but think she should stay and Skyyylaaar should go to be honest.

  • pj

Honestly, I’m shocked so many people have Colton in their top 3.  He was all kinds of pitchy to my ears.  And so fakety fake.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Risgar-G-Garde/100001125757262 John Risgar G. Garde

I thought the trio of jess, josh, hollie was not that bad.. And I also thought that hollie was just screaming and a pitch at her last note during the chorus.. and Jess and Josh was absolutely taken the song.. They both owned it..
Guys, vote for josh and jess PLS. PLS. If i can only vote here in the Phil.. :(

Amen sister!  He’s so full of shit, and those notes were all over the place.  Plus, I have to deduct points when those “deep, meaningful” looks you give the camera actually creep me out beyond reason.

I know, right? Great fan fiction material. I’m going to be busy again this summer. (Haley and Casey had something intense going on in my head last year.) And the best part is, Skylar has a boyfriend back in Mississippi! His name is Joseph; she mentioned him on Twitter.

  • Anonymous

me too. i think i’m on my 10th listen. lol

  • http://twitter.com/deadspotter goldiver

For the last 4 weeks, the judges are really giving the highest praises to Joshua. But I really don’t know if he has a big fan base. I mean, all the polls I’ve went through, Joshua’s like in the least 2 popular contestant. I mean that’s says something given the fact that he regulary gets standing ovations.

Joshua’s not gonna win Idol. I just can’t imagine him winning it. Maybe, Jessica, Colton, or Phillip. Joshua’s gonna be in the top 5 but I can’t imaGine him outlasting Colton or Phillip.

If there are contestants who has a consistent fan base, it’s Colton and Phillip. I mean, they have sung 1st, 2nd, 3rd at least two times each, but the’ve never landed in the bottom 3.

  • Anonymous

Hollie can sing, but I think she is lacking in performance skills. Perhaps if she picked better songs, that would help her, but her songs are a bit yawn-worthy. If there is a battle of the two divas, Jessica and Hollie, Jessica wins by a long-shot.

  • http://twitter.com/deadspotter goldiver

I still think that it will be a Colton and Phillip finale even if you don’t like it.

  • Anonymous

I’m surprised too.  I liked “Love the Way You Lie”, but then again I like Colton.  More telling is the fact that my sister (who predicts Idol with spot on accuracy) said it was Colton’s best performance so far.

  • Anonymous

Okay but Jessica still hasn’t opened the show.  If they’re all that sure of her appeal why hasn’t she?

Maybe she hasn’t opened the show yet because they don’t want the audience to tune out once she’s done?  That’s really a joke, but seriously, she’s far superior to both of those guys.  I vacillate between liking them and thinking they are hacks, but I am solid that she is the real deal.

Above and beyond that, it’s so obvious she ends up in B3 if she goes in
the first half that they can’t dare let her be forgotten to the
audience by not getting the pimp spot.”

She ends up in the bottom 3 when she performs bad. Elise’s fate is the easiest of all them to figure out. When she sings bad, she’s in the bottom. When she sings well, she’s not. It’s not that hard to figure out and it’s not that manipulative.

The only other person who could’ve closed the show was Joshua. They typically either end the show with the OMG amazing ballad ala Skylar last week or the OMG awesome uptempo like Elise’s WLL. None of the others qualified.

There have been plenty of parents and children of Idols go on the stage.
Plenty of people have gotten messages from other Idols, stars, etc. They posted a
picture of Colton and Chris Daughtry earlier in the year. P2 had his
bro-in-law on stage with him. DeAndre got to sit next to Eric Benet.
It’s not exclusive to Elise and Joshua. And it’s not going to end with them either.

  • callmecrazy

Skylar Laine…ack, the screeching during rehearsal.  I bet Jimmy wanted her baseball cap.  Wow, bonfire props…*roasting marshmallows*

She is desperately trying to reach for those high notes and failing.

  • http://twitter.com/hokiefam claudia powell

I don’t think there is anything that can change P2/Colton as final 2.  P2 just needed to be cute and play the guitar.  Colton has worked and improved for his final position.

Wow, they REALLY want Elise.  Jimmy must love her.

Joshua is really good and talented.  I think the show appreciates his talent but knows he doesn’t have the looks and sex appeal so can’t compete with the white guys.  I think they’d like him to stay around a few more weeks.

They want Hollie out, and then Skyler.  Skyler isn’t going to win anyway, and she has the best shot of any of them of a career no matter where she finishes.

  • Anonymous

    OK, I’m wading in here.

Regulars here probably know I’m a soft rock gal with a soft spot for well sung ballads.  That being said, I like all of the performances tonight but I’ll give it a shot at rating them.

    Based on this week’s performances:

    Top tier:
Joshua (liked his energy) & Colton (liked his style & I’m partial to piano players)

    Middle tier:
Elise (her vocal choices are stellar) & Hollie (her tone hits me just right)

Lowest tier – but still good:
Skylar (she kills it vocally but genre is not my style) & Jessica (technically perfect but a bit too practiced and I can’t get past that)

    Summary:
I hate to see anyone go since they all have talent & something to bring to today’s music, but the one I’d prefer to see go is Skylar.  We’ve just had 2 country kids finish 1 & 2 and do we really need a WGWG? ;)

ETA: In this context, WGWG means white GIRL with guitar.

  • callmecrazy

Yeah and its usually Randy who looks like his clothes are rather bondage…being that he wears clothes 3 sizes too small.

W O W. Jessica blew it out of the park tonight,my favorite by far, she hit every note with FEELING AND EMOTION, shes everything Pia lacked last season… FINALLY the judges critize P2 for doing the same thing every week (he also plays the damn guitar every week). I dont think he will be in the final 3, he’s been goin downhill for couple weeks now…. This is a tough one for whose going home this week… MY PREDICTION
    Hollie (for obvious reasons)
Skyler ( good, not good enough)
… i wanna say P2 for 3rd spot, but it could go to Joshua

Overall.. MUCH better than last week !

  • Anonymous

Joshua fits the mold of the phantom fanbase. He won’t ever have a large internet fanbase but he has one. He’s yet to hit the bottom 3 and this season, that says something.

Jacob Lusk finished in 5th place. Big Mike finished 4th. Syesha finished 3rd. All had little to no internet activity and all made it farther than 80% of the internet Idol fandom thought they would. And Joshua is better than all 3.

You’re right though, he won’t win. I won’t be shocked if he  outlasts at least one of P2/Colton. I would be shocked if he outlasted both though. I can see top 3.

Oh, Lordy… the intro *eye roll*.

Finally, they’re all dressed like they’re from this decade.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

“These judges are out of their minds.

They were hardly making any sense to me tonight about Hollie. I thought she sounded great tonight, and based on the judges comments, you thought she had laid a goose egg. I felt the same way about the audience being quiet. You can tell they felt the same way, and was wondering why it was not better praised. I mean, they basically said “ok job, but you are still going home”. I mean, Heejun and Deandre went home with good praise, why can’t Hollie? The poor girl, she didn’t deserve their condescending commentary. I mean, the girl changed up the song a bit, why was it so hard to give her credit for that. “We will see what happens this week” says Ms. J.Lo. Really, girl? Maybe we’ll see if you have screwed one of your chosen ones by riling up a fanbase that was annoyed at your off-base critics, making her safe? Which is not the plan, is it?

Hollie sang her heart out tonight. If I could, I would have voted for her.

  • http://twitter.com/bean99 Deena

I really liked Elise tonight.  I don’t recall Haley’s version and prefer Elise’s voice anyway.  I think her biggest problem is that she’s a 28 yr old woman on a show where the guys seem to get the votes.  I’d like to see her outlast Hollie at least. I like Hollie’s voice but she just isn’t ready and doesn’t have the confidence she needs yet.

Jessica is incredible.  She’s young yet has so much poise. I like both Colton & P2 but think Colton will be around longer.  I hope that Jessica is in the f2.  I think Joshua could be there talent-wise but am not sure he’ll be there at the end.  Skylar is good but we had a country f1 & 2 last season.

“It’s not that hard to figure out and it’s not that manipulative.”

It’s really funny that you think that…this is Idol, it’s always that manipulative.  By your logic, why not have Joshua go last then?  Has he ever?

Looking at Elise’s performance order…last, safe…2, bottom 3…4, bottom three…5, safe…last, safe…2, bottom 3.  She was B3 the night she sang Al Green, which most people raved over.  I’m not saying your logic is wrong, but mine clearly isn’t either.

As far as the other performers getting to close, neither Joshua nor Jessica have, and they’ve had plenty of big ballads or high energy performances that would qualify.

  • Anonymous

I prefer Skylar w/o the guitar. Eeew at Colton’s limited range.

  • Anonymous

Very good post.  I don’t want Skylar to go just because we’ve had some recent great country singers. Skylar is so good.  I think Jessica adds something amazing to this competition. And I don’t want to see Colton and Phillip go away just because they are wgwg.

  • Anonymous

At first I thought Joshua was just another church singer…but in these past few weeks, he’s show a more modern/retro r&b type of vibe that I’m starting to like…I wouldn’t mind him being in the top 3 or runner up…just as long as Jessica wins…I really think its being set up for her to have some amazing moment next week…the save will probably be used this week unless its Hollie going home..so she’s going to have to bring out all the stops..Jessica FTW

  • Anonymous

Agreed, but I think judges would love to see Josh or Jess in final 2 with Colton or P2 but not sure it is possible unless C and P are splitting cute wgwg votes?

  • Anonymous

Not so sure about the Phillip/Colton finale.  Joshua is in the running.  I’m so happy about that.  Joshua is definitely up there! I’m gonna be really mad at myself for not voting if Joshua doesn’t go on to the next round.

I think Hollie will go home tomorrow. Then next week Skylar. After that, we’re due for a shocker elimination in the coming weeks. I predict it will be either P2, Jessica or Joshua, and the judges will, most likely, use the save.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I so agree. The 4 that have not touched B3 are Joshua, Jessica, Colton and Phillip yet people keep assuming only 2 of them are untouchable. Based on… past history I guess? But we haven’t had 2 R&B/soul type contestants as strong as these in a while, and lesser ones have gone top 3, 4. So, why can’t at least one of them make the finals, and why can’t Joshua outlast Colton or Phillip? We hadn’t had a country singer hit the finals since Carrie before last year, when the right 2 appeared that could galvanize an audience. We know social media doesn’t mean as much as we think it does as well. So I’m not going to assume anything yet.

  • Anonymous

Jessica sang with so much emotion tonight..ITA that she does need to have a show-stopping moment within the next 2 Weeks…and she’s grown a lot in this competition to me

  • Anonymous

I thought tonight was really a strong night.  I don’t think the judges gave Hollie enough credit.  Randy was the closest to being on target but I really enjoyed Hollie’s performance of Perfect. I don’t think anyone gave a bad performance tonight so will rank according to my favorites of the night and my favorites over all.

    1) Jessica.  I thought she defined her self with that Jazmine Sullivan song.  I didn’t know it at all but that so so current and believable.  I really thought I was watching a pro.

2)Skylar. I thought she was great tonight.

3)Joshua/Colton. These guys were kind of a tie.  I love that Joshua changed it up and went up tempo.  I really enjoyed his performance.  And I think tonight was one of Colton’s best.  I enjoyed what he did with this song.

4)Hollie: I really like Hollie. I think she seemed more centered tonight and I really enjoyed her take on Pinks song.

5)p2: I liked his performance a lot. I hate that the judges are trying to steer him back to holler ville.  No, I like this new direction he is going.  I think it was so much better than last week.  He could be #4 instead of Hollie.  I think he had the better performance slightly but I was routing more for Hollie because P2 is pretty much in the pocket.

    6) Elise: I wish she had picked a different song.  Not that she did it badly, I think she did it well. But I keep thinking about Haley doing this song and Randy ragging on it and saying it wasn’t good.  Whatever!  They must really want to keep Elise in to give her the pimp spot twice out of the last 3 shows.  Didn’t vote for her.

    Voted for everyone else.

  • Anonymous

I really like P2. Jessica blew it out of the water! Hollie is a great singer but she did not blow me away although I really wanted her too. Skylar is a cutie pie.  Oy!

  • sue

I don’t know, DI has Elise at the very bottom and they have been right the last couple of weeks.  It’s sad but I hope the judges save Elise if she is eliminated tomorrow. She doesn’t seem to have a large fanbase voting. :( Plus Hollie probably got the sympathy votes.

My bottom 3 would be P2, Colton and Joshua but that’s not going to happen, lols.  So it will probably be Hollie, Elise and Colton in the b3.

  • callmecrazy

Elise and Phillips’ duet….OMG, they are ruining my fav song…*throws  tomatoes*!

  • Anonymous

If Hollie is the lowest vote getter tomorrow, she will go home.  It is entirely possible that she won’t be though – based on her fanbase amping up the votes (they focused on her bottom 3 spot in her intro package and the judges were inexplicably harsh about her vocals).

If it’s anyone but Hollie – they’ll use the save.  If Hollie goes home, then they’ll use the save next week (which is their last opportunity).  I think it’s a couple of weeks before we really have to worry about anyone but Hollie going home.

  • Anonymous

There wasn’t really a BAD performance tonight other than Phillip and the group performances, which I’ve never cared about during the voting nights aside from I think Joshua and Jessica last week, unless Deandre, Heejun, and Joshua’s MJ performance was during a voting night. But I really think the mini group performances should stay on results night until late in the season.

No real ratings, since they were all kinda good and solid but not entirely memorable. The only one I vaguely remember is Joshua because his was cool and entertaining. I remember Jessica, Elise, and Colton for once being good, though.

Hollie has a great voice combined with the ability to suck the life out of anything she sings. Totally Pia 2.0 (with a more appealing voice, however). It’s gotta be her or Phillip, who are just outclassed by everyone else.

It was REALLY great to hear some more modern songs on Idol, though. No real standouts but overall really solid.

I would be disappointed if the saved Elise.  Like Deandre, she has already been saved once:  When they did the boy girl thing. And she has had lots of bottom three visits.  She is not a sympathetic favorite and has no chance to win.  I really think  Idol should ditch the judges save.  Just leave it up to America.  We vote who we vote for.

I haven’t finished watching the videos yet but so far of the ones I’ve seen.
Skylar – don’t know the song, but thought she did well, one of her better performnaces, and well done for bringing out a guitar, always seems to work well for the guys!
Colton – really liked it, again I think it was his best performance so far. He definitely seems the most now and marketable.
Jessica – good vocals as always, again didn’t know the song. I don’t really get the emotion from her though, it just always seems a bit contrived. The judges barely seemed to clap her at the end.
Elise and Philip, it was ok.
Hollie – loved this, the song and words seemed very appropriate for her. I just love her tone. Wow, the judges faces at the end though, they really don’t like her do they. I didn’t hear any bum notes at all. I hope her fans rally round.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NDYOWBIIPZU6PBRHGOPT2ZZJXQ sweetmm

Jessica comes on top as usual; her control is beyond her age.  What differs her from the other 2 young ladies is her control as both Hollie and Skyler are also good singers.  Colton vs P2 scenario, again Colton came ahead.  Not because he has better vocals but he knows how to change it up and P2 as usual is “standing still”.  The one deservedly to go home is either Hollie or P2 based on this week great performances.  Hopefully Elise being in the pimp spot and Joshua getting the SO would deter them from bottom 3.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I finally watched back everyone I missed. My favs tonight: Jessica, Joshua, Skylar and (gasp) Colton. Liked Elise a lot but she got a little yelly. Hollie still didn’t connect but she wasn’t bad as they said. Phillip started well but then same old same old.

I know how many feel about wnts lol, but I am just posting this for fun. Tonight’s score should be about a 60, which is a very good score for an episode. If you took out the duets and trio though, the score would be a 67, which is incredible as the highest score on wnts for an episode right now is 64. It would also mean this season already has two of the three best idol episodes of all time.

okay…this week everyone did great job tonight..including Hollie, but the judges are trying to throw her under the bus. My thoughts on their performance:

Skylar: Wow, she owns the song. Kellie doesn’t have the voice that skylar has..it was a solid performance and nailed it. Hope she stays away from B3.

Colton: I like this kid and he keeps improving every week since he sings ‘Piano Man’. The tender tone as he goes low and really digging as he plays the Piano He’ll be safe

Elise/P2: Okay it was a meh performance for me and you can see these two not really liking the song and p2 just keep standing there like a robot. OTH Elise was great. She tried to keep hanging on the song

Jessica: Amazing, she could have done better but I think she doesn’t want to oversing as Josh is. other than that she controls the performance like a Pro. She’s unstoppable. Liking her everyweek.

Joshua: He’s good but the standing O was irrelevant. I think he chose the wrong song. Bruno Mars did great with more than attitude. And i’m not sure he’s going to be safe

Colton/Skylar: This is much better than last week and more connection. Colton is getting better every week and as for Skylar, she’s Amazing

Hollie: She started great but as she stands there’s a pitch problem only a few. but the judges were harsh esp Steven. The should have give her credit for changing up the song

P2: He did good but nothing special. He’s like Lee 2.0…. IDK why people like him even some people admit he sings very subpar and did the same thing everyweek

Jessica/Joshua/Hollie: It was a bit messy for me..I think Hollie’s in it.LOL. Joshua oversangs a bit. Jessica did great as for Hollie…ummmm nothing. it was an OK performance for me

Elise: Is Queen Elise back? Yes she is but not the Queen I used to love her when she sang led zeppelin. for me, she did great but Haley won over me last year with more fierceness. I’m not sure she’s safe though

    Ranks:
    Jessica
    Skylar
    Colton
    Elise
    Hollie
    Joshua
    P2

    B3
    Hollie
    Elise
    Joshua/P2

Sorry, Hollie, Vickie from TheVoice (last season) did much better than that. Where’s the energy, girl?

  • Anonymous

    oh, Hollie

technically, the vocal was fine. but the pacing was way too sluggish

That was way closer to Celine Dion than to P!nk

  • Anonymous

As much as I ragged on them (for a reason I forgot) last week, I really like looking at WNTS too. That’s really interesting. The group performances drop it from 67.9 (I did the math too but got a different number) all the way down to 53.1. I’m also wondering, when they come up with these averages do they count each duet/trio multiple times? I don’t think they should do that. I think the mini-group system kinda screwed up their ratings calculations, lol. If they could find a way to make it so each duet-trio counts as a single performance but still work it so it’s a rating for all contestants, that would probably be better.

Also, the idea of Jessica and Joshua getting a performance rated 28 (thanks to that awful trio) is a bit strange.

I agree about Jessica needing a few hamburgers. So is so tiny. Too tiny. I hope she doesnt have eating disorder.  It wouldnt hurt to put on some healthy pounds. But, I am also aware that some people are just born skinny and no matter what they do, they can;t gain weight.

Haley sang this song last year.  So what.  It’s a moot point who sang it better, because Haley already has a record deal and is singing at Lollapalooza.  Bottom 3 for Elise?  Not if I can help it.

Hollie, Joshua and Jessica’s trio….a painfully out of sync hot mess!

  • Anonymous

    LOL, P2 looks skeered.

  • Anonymous

that trio was a bit of a hot mess. Joshua actually did the best job

  • Anonymous

Sorry, Randy. Joshua is just loud. It’s Jessica that killed that Kelly Clarkson song.

  • judes

The songs I knew the most tonight were the group songs-so I didn’t mind them although I thought Skylar & Joshua oversang in their parts .Have to give kudos to Elise for choosing a Gotye song seeing he”s an Aussie!
From the comments here I can see that many have their favourites & that’s fine -each to their own.So if I make a comment about you favourite you don’t like -its not because I’m ragging on them its because I just don’t like the way they do a song.

I must say at first when I saw Jessica with the piano -I thought -hey Colton is helping her out -but then I realised it was a guy with a white hat!!Lol!
Jessica again sang perfectly but I don’t know if it was the song or the way she sang it that I didn’t like. I could tell she was into the song which was good but i just didn’t feel the connection across the screen.

I thought Steven was really random in how harsh he was with Holly as I did not hear any pitch issues .At least Randy said she was much better than last week.

Skylar was okay to me but then again it could have been that I didn’t connect with the song.

I connected with Joshua a lot more this week .He performed well-even though I prefer Bruno’s version. I think the reason i liked it was hat it was a quicker song & so he didn’t have a chance to go OTT like he did in the trio.

I liked how P2 started his song but the ending was so-so. I kind of agree with J-lo that he needs to step it up .Mind you Scotty stayed he same last year & won so who knows?

I suppose its because I also play piano but I really like the way Colton plays & performs together. To the person who said they muted Colton before his performance -that’s your loss as I think it was one of his best performances even though I didn’t know the song that well..If I’d have done that to Joshua I would have missed a good performance as well.

I like the way Elise sang this song -but I sort of agree with the judges from last year that its just not that great a song! I hope she’s safe but I’m a bit worried for her.

So all in all -I think my judgement tonight was clouded a bit by the songs that were chosen & whether I connected to the performance of the song or not.

I wish they only had a bottom 2 from now on but for me it could be Skylar,Hollie & maybe Elise unfortunately.

  • callmecrazy

Elise Testone…fitting that she sings a Gaga song since I think she resembles her a bit.

    Horrible dress…but a good performance.

  • Anonymous

I don’t want to single him out. He’s okay, right on par with Colton.

  • Anonymous

Jessica looks so normal to me!  jmo.

  • Anonymous

Phillip gets votes just by showing up.

  • Anonymous

Well I hope NFL Rocks you voted because Elise is failing miserably at Dial Idol. I voted only for Elise tonight but I think she may be toast.

  • Anonymous

Haven’t been interested in anyone, voting wise, since the year Kris won, but I’m really pulling for Hollie this season. Voted last week for her and again tonight, after the obvious ‘ there’s the door… ‘ critiques from the judges, and the busy signals tonight FAR outweighed last weeks. As mentioned by a few others earlier, the fan base is going to be riled up, and seem to have kicked it into another voting gear after another round of negative responses. Pitchy?! All over the place?!
I dunno, they must be hearing something different than I am out of my tv.

  • Anonymous

Well it would make sense to save Elise since she did not give the worst performance (s) tonight.

  • Anonymous

Jessica sounded horrible on the trio. She was really, really off. It was so weird. Joshua’s performance was fun, but not a fan of the song. Bruno Mars is such a 50s throwback to me. Hs music/songwriting seems to be heavily influenced by that era. It works for Bruno and Cee Lo got himself a hit with that retro sound. I didn’t care for Joshua’s voice on that particular song. It just seemed gravelly with little color, little dimension. And I do agree with there son who had mentioned hs coat looking too small. Did Tommy approve that? Skylar was decent, but not embracing country again, unless it’s Keith Urban. Hollie and Elise have these voices that can sound flat, not appealing. It’s really amazing to me how You and I is now a “good” song after Gaga had success with the song. I think Haley’s vocals were much better on it then Elise’s. Colton was pretty weak vocally until the end. I wish I could like him. I don’t hate him. In fact, I don’t dislike any of them. I think I’m just starting to get bored with them. I want them to turn a song on its head. I liked P2. The beginning was very good. I was hoping he would ave stuck longer to the melody and then go big later in the song, but I still thought it was good. Whether you like Phillip or not he does make a song his own. Elise and Phillip had the best duet. I still in shock how bad jessica sounded in the beginning of the trio.did they sabotage her. The judges need to stop reding from a script or at least memorize it so it’s not so obvious. They need to be in the moment and to be honest. I think Jennifer knows ultimately “the bussing” won’t work, people will vote for their favorites at this point in the show.

  • Anonymous

No, if the audience really liked Hollie’s performance they would have protested. They said nothing because Hollie didn’t leave them with much of anything except some loud singing.

  • Anonymous

Have not caught all the performances, but for the first time, Joshua is in my top spot — great energy and vocals (thank you for holding back the Lusk).

Colton did not sound whiny for a change; I actually enjoyed his vocal tone.  In the-cute-white-boy-sing-off, Colton is moving forward while P2 is circling.  I know he wants to be true to himself, but mixing it up will help his chances.

Jessica was just okay for me — just heard (but not see) the vocal and it did not entice me to watch.

Hollie, in her ice skating outfit, sucked the life out of that song.  She does not seem to have much rhythm.  Poor thing, you can hear the multiple busses gunning for her.

Elise was okay — better than last week but still has not topped her Adele song.

  • Anonymous

Overall it was a good night.

I think Hollie is going home — they are really pushing Elise.  But I think there will be three girls in the B3.

I’m going to make a bold prediction:  P2 will be the next boy going home.

  • Anonymous

Sorry for the freakin’ typos and nonsensical words popping up.

    My Top 3:

    Joshua
    Skylar
    Jessica

    Bottom 3:

    Phillip
Elise (this is how I see it, not how I want it to be)
    Hollie (eliminated)

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

    I love P2 now.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2DQ6QIUABIKODZJHZH4F24EBGY Joseph P

As far as the performances go, the weakest was meh, but if I had to run them down, here’s how it goes for me:

Jess and Josh were the tops.
Hollie was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay underrated. A**hat judges!
Colton and Skylar were okay. Didn’t care much for both.
    Elise was overrated.
    And P2, antiseptic.

If it were based on performances, P2 and Elise along with Skylar (or Colton). The first two can go home in either way.
What might happen, Hollie with Elise and… Joshua. And I’m guessing, they’ll save either of the latter two, considering the judges pissed the Holliepops off.

  • Anonymous

One more thought, I loved how quiet the audience got when they were bussing Hollie. To me it was a big WTF moment as if the audience wasn’t playing along with the obvious manipulation. Randy knew, mentioning how quiet it got. People were pissed.

  • Anonymous

    I’m loving this season too!

  • Anonymous

Or they got quiet because they agreed. IIRC, the same thing happened when Paige got horrible reviews from the judges after murdering Against All Odds. Then again, Hollie’s performance wasn’t nearly as bad, just pretty dull.

I somehow don’t feel like the audience cares enough about judge manipulation to react in such a way about it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2DQ6QIUABIKODZJHZH4F24EBGY Joseph P

You never know? For me, it was more of a “WTF?” quiet.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

The problem with Dial Idol is that it has a wide margin of error — wide enough to make it right 90% of the time.  However, I see Jessica, Colton and Elise in the B3.  Don’t believe it.  Check it again at 2am when West Coast is done voting.  It always changes.  And many people text, which is not measured by Dial Idol.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

If the audience disagreed, I think they would have booed loudly as they do with many contestants.  However, I felt that it was somewhat of an awkward moment when everyone in the room sees the writing on the wall.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

GabrielOak….you bet I voted for Elise.

  • Anonymous

I know some say that you cant compare Elise to Haley..but since I think that Elise is trying to borrow Haley’s story arc, Im going compare them…i like Elise, but I’ll take Haley over Elise any day of the week…to me Haleys voice has more range and is much more clear…and i prefer Haley’s growls to Elise’s…Elise’s growls kinda sounds like she trying to clear her throat..Haley also have a very crisp and clear voice when she wants to (I still remember that high note she hit when she sang Rolling in the Deep)

AAANNNDDD….Haley is much more “Jazzier” than Elise and can scat like no one’s business
AAANNNDDD…Haley has much more fashion sense than Elise (WTH was she wearing tonight???0

BTW…im not trying to drag on Elise…i acutally like her a lot…I just think that Elise should get her own story arc

  • judes

I could see if Elise was a teen maybe copying Hayley but Elise is 27/28 & has admitted to not seeing idol before as she was too busy with her band -so no just because she does some of the same songs doesn’t make her a copycat-maybe they just have similar taste in music!! I happen to like Elise’s voice more than Hayleys – & Elise has the added advantage of mixing it up when she plays piano.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

Jessica and Joshua should be the final two.

I haven’t been this interested in Idol since S8. This group reminds me of Idol in it’s glory days. All very talented and not one fodder left. Jessica is amazing and probably the best female contestant we had in years. She is a pop/r&b diva in the making. She’s a star. Joshua, love love love him. Joshua is a performer and he can sing. This is a very good season.

  • Kylee

Overall, a good night. The duos/trios left me cold tbh, but they were all great in their solos. I honestly didn’t think the judges were THAT hard on Hollie-just Steven really(I think he has something against her). JLo always has been in her corner for Hollie and it shows. I actually thought Phillip’s critiques were a little harsher. Its going to be a hard night tomorrow because they are all so talented! The save might be used…

  • Anonymous

I know a lot of Filipinas, and often they are pretty small, in height and weight.

  • Anonymous

I’m so confused. I honestly thought that Holly was really good tonight, singing a truly beautiful song. And while Jessica was once again vocally perfect (heh), that song sucked ass, for me. Did it even have an actual melody?

There is not doubt in my mind that Jessica is one of the best technical singers that the Idol stage has ever seen, but I wonder if the TPTB are freaking out because she is not as popular as they had hoped/assumed she’d be? Jessica seems like a very nice girl, but Hollie is just so darn likable/adorable, and with that gorgeous tone, her lack of perfection and experience can be easily overlooked. I can see why they are trying to bus her though – keep Colton and Phillip around to split each other’s votes, but get rid of Hollie to clear the path for Jessica. The plan makes theoretical sense but I wonder if it will backfire on them?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

It’s pretty simple why Elise and P2 keep getting paired…Iovine is trying to recreate Fleetwood Mac.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5Y6WQETDKRQINNDVQIIT4BFDOY NFLRocks

genius…Sorry, but I really don’t think that anyone concentrates on trying to copy people from last season.  Elise isn’t competing against Haley.

  • Anonymous

OK just finished watching the rest.
Colton and Skylar. Colton seems musch better at duets than Skylar, she just never looks or interacts with Colton, even when she was facing him her eyes were either closed or looking down. Colton sang well, Skylar got a bit shouty.
Joshua, just everything about him is so old fashioned. I want to like him more as he seems like a nice guy but I just find him so meh.
Elise, was OK, but I much prefer Haleys version from last year, have that one on my ipod and it always sounds great.
Philip, was OK, bit same old, same old. But like several have said, it never hurt Scotty singing the same thing week in week out.
Hollie,Joshua,Jessica, was OK, not the best.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=195101108 Stefan Wind

I hope it backfires and Hollie wins this whole thing, but I’ve never had a female favorite of mine make it to the finale and don’t think this year will change anything.
Haley was my best chance last year and look how that country jamboree turned out. ;)

  • Kylee

I also don’t think the judges should be attacked for praising Elise’s song.

  • BonnieDee

Skylar was awful on Don’t You Wanna Stay.  Lauren Alaina covers that song much better than Skylar.  Look up Lauren filling in for Kelly and singing that song with Jason Aldean.  A million times better than Screamy Skylar.  Skylar also went very, very off pitch with Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You. The judges are out of their minds. Picture perfect PITCH!! What?

  • BonnieDee

I think Haley will have a good career, though.  As for Hollie, she is getting unfairly criticized.

  • Kylee

I think Steven and Randy have always had something against Hollie. Randy and Steven both thought her S10 audition was “all over the place” and then JLO was outvoted by them when she wanted to put her through.

  • BonnieDee

Hollie did an amazing job.  There’s an injustice being done here. That awful crap by Skylar is getting praised and Hollie isn’t?  Come on judges.  Open up your ears.

  • BonnieDee

Jessica is JUST WOW!  She’s the whole package.

  • hcpoirot

Three girls will be in bottom 3.

The good news is everyone sing well to great tonight.

The bad news is everyone sing well to great tonight.

Because no one sing a train wreck, the song choices and performances will ve crucial.

Jessica, Joshua, P2 and Colton had the best performances and song selection.

Hollie had one of her best performance.

Skylar and Elise though good but forgettable.

So my prediction: Skylar or Elise will be going home but probably be save by the judges save.

  • MalwareDie

The group performances this week were not very pleasant. Jessica and Joshua’s really stood out with their vocals and poise they demonstrated in their performances.

Here is a survey on the Top 7 of AI S11. Please take it and help to spread it around.

    http://kwiksurveys.com/online-survey.php?surveyID=LLMKIG_88e91c42

  • Mateja Praznik

    Jessica was fantastic.

  • hcpoirot

I am surprise tons of people had short memory.

Jessica already done 3 quick tempo song, in top 25, Gloria estefan and Whitney song ” How Will I Know” So people who said want to hear her sing quicktempo song, please rewind the previous episodes.

Joshua only did one quick tempo song, Runaway baby by Bruno mars. Good but really, standing ovation from the judges.

Elise had 3 pimp spot and had land twice in bottom 2. Wow, Nigel want her so badly in top 5.

The judges are so useless now. At least the Voice judges are better with critiques now.

Look like Nigel want to throw Hollie and Philip2 under the bus now and told the judges to throw them under the bus.

  • RockiDreams

I still am not motivated to spend any money on these performances.  The duets stunk up the place.  The only one I was mildly interested in was Colton and that isn’t saying much.  Guess I am just not into this season at all and no one has changed my mind yet.  Ridiculous comments by the judges for Hollie.  I liked Phil at the beginning of his song with the sax then he lost me.  What the hell did Elise have on – that was just hideous.  Oh well, there is always next week for me anyway.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4NSNFEDEIJOICF4OPGMCZDCQIY Dillon

All these fantards creaming their pants and yelling boohoo not fair Elise gets pimp spot every other week are really getting on my nerves.

I’m sure the save will be used this week, I hope it is used on someone like Hollie, Skylar or Colton and it screws over the boring Jessica and the completely over-the-top Joshua next week, eliminating both in one sweep, I’m so over their completely overhyped praise for pitchy and bland performances.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACXMFJNL4VFQDTXRZRJ2QZGTFU Kelly

I like rock and singersongerwriter music and I will never understand the flamboyant/gay/pageantry appeal of Jessica or Beyonce’s music. I think people buying those kind of music are shallow people.

  • Anonymous

I agree. Jessica is a real star and I’d sign up for a Jessica – Josh finale.

  • Axxxel

Beauty is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. I love rock but I also love flamboyance … How people show off/exaggerate their voices and moves with full self confidence… It is just mindless plain fun to watch and to listen to, a nice way  to forget for a few minutes that reality bites and s*cks. You call that shallow, I call it escapism.

  • Axxxel

Have not really been following Jessica. I hope she will do something a bit more uptempo. Not as uptempo as she did with that Gloria Estefan song… but just slightly more… so that she can dance in JLo’s shoes.. Well said Steven Tyler.

  • Anonymous

Well, I thought that was a pretty decent night. That was a very good bunch of songs. And good songs sure help make a good night, don’t they?

I keep wondering why PhilPhil (who seems like a lovely guy) doesn’t get bored with singing the *exact* *same* *song* *every* *single* *time.* (well, not *every* single time; he’s had a few moments of spark. but most of the time …. ) Aren’t you bored, Phillip?

I love love love love love Hollie’s voice. But I just don’t think she’s able to express herself and her songs through that voice yet. Her voice is stunningly beautiful, to me — and I think that when you have a voice like that you get seduced by just focusing on making it as beautiful as possible — but it just never turns the corner into delivering a revelation about a song and about her, which I think real professional performances do. She and the song just don’t come through the beauty, to me. Kind of like Pia but, while I don’t think the much more experienced Pia is probably going to change and can’t *move* either, I would bet that Hollie is just having to grow into it.

I love Skylar’s energy and she has had her excellent moments, but I find her not as expressive as I want her to be, either. Again, I do think it’s mostly youth, although I don’t think her *voice* has nearly as much potential as Hollie’s or Lauren’s or Allison I’s voices (to name some other very talented young’uns, for example) — although her stage persona and personality *do* — and I expect that last night Jimmy and Akon were right when they warned her away from the guitar. I think it very much got in her way.

Colton was Colton again. He’s very solid, to me, but except for having the quintessential nonthreatening-boy looks and demeanor and so on, I just have never gotten star power from him. A very talented and thoughtful musician, however.

Loved Jessica and Elise. What else is there to say? Good vocals and they inhabited the songs, as usual. They’re the top, for me. Love them both. … And … so did Joshua. Sometimes he falls into the Hollie/Skylar basket for me — massive potential (in his case from the voice, like Hollie) but the voice goes off on its own and doesn’t live in the song a lot of times. This time, he got it, I thought. I’ve always loved the way he tries to do it right, even when he misses, and I love his performances when he hits it.

Missed seeing Deandre make his attempt, too. (and even Heejun, actually) What continues to impress me about this season is that just about everybody in it really seems to at least get what they *ought* to be doing with their voices and performances — they just miss a bit, some more and some less frequently. They impress me as potential pros. (Jessica and Elise can go out and kill *today,* though.)

I really enjoyed last night’s show. Give these contestants a current theme and they deliver. Overall they all did a solid job, but the weakest would probably be Philip and Hollie.

My favorites were Jessica, Joshua, Skylar, and Colton.

Skylar- The girl has so much range and she sings with passion. I’m not a big fan of her tone, but she’s extremely talented. She might be in the B3 though, just because she performed so early and might not have been as memorable.

Colton – Well if it’s a battle between Colton and Phillip, Colton won the night. He’s very current, and he’s willing to change it up every week, so I appreciate that. His falsetto was a little weak and their were some pitchy moments, but he brought the right emotion, and did what Colton does.

Jessica- I haven’t felt this strong about a contestant for a long time, but this girl is a star. She’s the type of person who probably could of gotten a record deal from a major label without even coming on idol. I loved this performance and replayed it sooo many times. When she’s making her album, Jessica needs to make sure she keeps her RnB/Urban style, because that’s where she excels. Sure, she’ll be releasing pop songs, but they need to have SOUL in it. She should not be in the B3, but I’m not sure if the idol audience “got” this performance, regardless she’s not going home.

Joshua- He’s a showman, dynamic performer. What can I say, he’s great, excellent job.

Hollie- good vocals, but their was a lack of energy. She took the soul out of that song.

Phillip – I’m tired of this guy, same ole, same ole

Elise- she did a solid job. The song was perfect for her soulful, gritty voice. She probably shouldn’t have closed the show though, cause some of the others were more impressive.

The duets/trio- Hot messes, but the trio was kind of fun in a lulzy way.

This comment is ridiculous. Music does not define the character of a listener. It’s an art form. A type of expression. Like any art form, it’s appeal is a matter of preference and connection.

I thought Akon was a great mentor I loved when he said to Holly it will click in one day and thats when you will be a professional.  It struck me because having seen some recent vids of Lauren here and online I get what he is talking about as it seems to have clicked for her.  Hollie has all the tools but  it just hasn’t clicked yet.

I liked the beginning of Skyla’rs performance but it became to shouty for me at the end. Thought guitar was not useful as well as flames shooting.

I actually loved Colton’s performance but I love that song so that helped but he wasn’t nasely and was full of emotion.

P2 was P2 love him or hate him he was better then last week.

Jessica was Jessica perfect but I was not loving song choice but she did great.

Hollie was better beatuiful voice somewhat stilted on stage but much better the judges are not on board with her at all.

Joshua is the best overall performer in this group.  I am not a huge fan of his vocals but I get that is personaal preference he is crazy good.

Elsie I liked the begining and end the middle I found boring.

I have no idea other then Hollie who would be in bottom three. Maybe Skylar and Elsie.

I have a theory why they are busing Hollie….I think they want a female winner so badly and they want it to be Jessica….so…probably at this point in the game Phillip and Colton are leading every week in votes ahead of Jessica….Hollie is taking votes away from Jessica….bus Hollie, hope her votes go to Jessica….she catches up a little bit, next bus Elise….her votes go to Jessica….next bus Skylar …her votes go to Jessica….voila she is now ahead of the boys cause they are splitting votes…just my theory…but this week I think it will backfire cause Hollie has peeps and those peeps were pissed and power voted the girl to safety….
I have no idea who is going home and who to put my votes on…I do think they will use the save tonight for anyone but Hollie and maybe Skylar

  • http://twitter.com/BazzleFjsm Bazzle

First I’d like to say the duets and trios were…. not on par for me.
But… I can’t think of another song that Elise & Phillip could have done that would have appealed.

Meh. Modern day music ay.. I can of some really great song choices. But uh… no way would they be cleared for idol. lol
    Skylar: A-
Suprise suprise this was actually my favourite performance of the night. Just told that story and sang with so much meaning. What I liked about this the most was that it showed yet another side of her we haven’t seen yet like we saw in the youtube videos, almost like singer songwriter country vibe with that guitar. It won’t be suprising if she’s in the bottom 3 though. theres only 7 left I guess and 2 hours for anyone who goes first is doom.
    Colton: B
This was interesting. I like how he did something tricky with the song. Very subtle but still lacked something for me. But I did love that he gave a subtle performance. meh its probably these modern songs that just aren’t doing it for me.
    Jessica: A-
This was one of my favourites from her. She is very consistent with those solo performances and thats to be commended. I’m connecting with her performances more each week. That’s a good sign. Such good subtle control in parts.
    Joshua: B
So glad Joshua went upbeat! But I don’t know if this was the right one. It felt a little out of place for me. Joshua’s voice is best when he has a bit of space to milk those notes. I don’t think this song allowed that. He nailed it best he could though. But I disagreed with the judges. It didn’t really…. stand out for me. Though no one really did.
    Hollie: B-
She needs more time and she just aint got it. Well obviously much better than last week. But I actually think I know what Steven meant ‘it just laid there’. The song kinda sits still until the chorus but Pink knows how to put grit behind it and Hollie just didn’t. I actually liked Hollie in that trio ‘Stronger’ better than Josh and Jess, it matched her voice way better. I thought she was on pitch for the Pink song, don’t know what Randy was talking about.
    Phillip: B+
Hmm, I don’t know I didn’t think it was that bad. Underwhelming J Lo says…. I disagree actually. Same sorta thing, maybe. But I like that sorta thing. And just by trying to make his beginnings more subtle and trying to do less shouting I think that he is making progress. Again, I think I understand what JLo was saying about him being more serious and trying to stay on pitch more than relying on his unique style of performance as an excuse not to sing well.
    Elise: B+
This is a good song for something released in this decade in pop. But this song is just too jam session to be a mind blowing performance. There is only so much you can do if a song doesn’t allow it. But Elise took it in the completely right direction vocally, putting more emphasis on the phrasing. At the end i felt like she was actually beside me telling me something rather than singing it on tv.
Slight improvement from last week. But tbh didn’t like that they limited it to 3 years. I mean only a certain few songs will be cleared that people actually would know.. and actually allows for some vocals. I mean I just don’t believe if Elise had a band like the Black Keys she would have chosen to do You and I. i just dont.

    1. Skylar – I think she did a great job with this song, but lacked a little energy. I didn’t recognize the song, but perhaps the Country fans did (7/10)

    2. Colton – loved this. He needs to watch being angsty all the time, but that emotion really suited this song. He has some great instincts and hit some really nice notes (8/10)

    3. Jessica – Jessica is amazing. She hits all the right notes and has such control. She makes it look effortless so I’m not sure everybody realizes how difficult what she does is. The Michelle Kwan of this competition. (9.5/10)

    4. Joshua – That was a LOT of fun. Joshua puts so much energy into his performances and also has so much control. Stunning voice. (9.5/10)

    5. P^2 – If somebody started a rumour that P^2 only sang once and Idol keeps replaying that one performance each week, I would totally believe them. Gosh, it is the same song every week. He doesn’t vary tempo, staging or anything. I’ve never seen anything like it on Idol. I can’t believe the judges gave him heck for not murdering the melody this week. Argh! At least it seemed more in tune than last week (2/10)

    6. Hollie – Hollie couldn’t pick a song to save her life. That song was too gritty for her. It was like Musak P!nk. She should have waited a few more years before trying out again. She should have figured out her style and she should have learned to relax on stage. She has an amazing instrument, but she needs to learn how to use it (6/10)

    7. Elise – IDK. I love Haley’s version of this song and have listened to it so many times on my iPod, that Elise’s version just seemed lackluster. She didn’t do anything really new with it. That’s the problem with these modern, well-known songs (or recently popular Idol performances); you are judged in relation to them and you have to do something to change it up. How do you make a modern song more modern?    (7.5/10)

Who should go home: P^2 (we’ve heard all he has to offer)
Who will go home: Hollie (too many weeks without a great performance) or Skylar (early in the show, not a well known song, nice comments from judges)

Since I don’t know many of the originals, I appreciated most of the performances.  I replayed Elise Testone and Phil Phillips – “Somebody That I Used to Know” and found that this is the best Phillip has sung.  She brings o9ut the best in him and he’s not boring!

    My rankings for the night:

1: Joshua: He had the most complete performance of the night as far as vocals and oomph. Not quite Bruno Mars, but he didn’t get overwhelmed by the staging and he worked his moves well. I didn’t quite feel like he’s as dangerous as the song says but what I loved is that this was a changeup from the past weeks where he’s built the song and then gone gospel crazy with it. That was getting predictable so he did what he needed to do this week. I was really impressed that his phrasing didn’t seem to suffer much from the fast pace of the song. Question though: did the band ever drop out the way they showed in the intro package?

2: Jessica: Here’s where IMO she made a major improvement: this is the 1st time I actually felt her vulnerability in her singing, she seemed very emotionally connected to this song. Her version didn’t quite measure up to the pain in Jasmine Sullivan’s voice IMO but this was still really good. Bonus points for nailing the last note despite cracking herself up by almost missing her seat at the end there. That was adorable.

3: Elise: I absolutely love, love, LOVE how she sounded on the song when she was sitting there at the piano – her phrasing was ace, I love this new flirty side we’re seeing of Elise, and it was Vienna-level great. The back half of the song sounded a little repetitive and there were times I thought she pushed harder than she needed to. Even though she got pimp spot and pimped by the judges, I have a bad feeling that the WTFery of her dress will help land her in the bottom.

Confession: I had no memory of how Haley sounded on this last year (just like I had no memory of how Adam sounded on WLL) but that’s good because I was able to form my opinion of Elise’s performance based on that performance, Elise’s other performances, and the Gaga original and then go back and watch the previous Idol performances of the songs.

4: Colton: He did Colton very well like MJ says. I will be fair and say the chorus head voice part is very tough to control. He lost pitch and volume trying to sing that part but the degree of difficulty was high. The problem for me is I can hear better versions of this in my head from previous male HAC contestants and there’s just no excitement factor for me in this. It was mostly competent so I have to rank him this high but it didn’t feel free to me.

5: Skylar: I love this girl but I hate the advice she’s gotten from the judges because the direction she’s going to get more votes is not what makes her special. Her phrasing is so cool but she lost it oversinging the chorus of Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You, and her voice sounded so much thinner there too. And no, she was definitely not on pitch. She had to growl to get notes and I didn’t feel like it fit the song. The good news is she didn’t sound like a Miranda copycat and I do like the way she passionately sells her songs. But, I prefer more nuance and playfulness from Skylar. I guess she couldn’t do a country version of You & I without being accused of ripping off the Sugarland/Gaga or Miranda version, but I think that would’ve made for a much better performance from Skylar. I’m obviously happy with Elise’s version though.

6: Hollie: I actually thought this was an improvement over the last couple of weeks. She did take the grit out of the original and I did feel a lack of real ache in her version which is a problem. But, she graduated up to a midtempo, and she at least played to her strengths (which she’d lost sight of the last couple of weeks). She sang well this week and there was a certain level of urgency in her performance (though, not enough).

7: P2: He certainly wasn’t bad by his standards and this was certainly better than last week. But I just. didn’t. care. His performances have become virtually indistinguishable for me. It’s not that I hate his genre of music, but at some point, I want something more from a performer than the idea that he can jam on cover songs and I’m not seeing that from P2.

8: Elise/P2 duet: I didn’t watch this live, I only read Brian Mansfield’s scathing review of it. After watching the performance I don’t understand his hate for it. Not that it was amazing but I thought Elise’s phrasing on it was great. P2 was P2 so I guess that dragged things down. He just has no sense for vocal modulation and when it’s appropriate.

9: Skylar/Colton duet: Skylar had some good phrasing moments but it felt completely wrong seeing them sing this. She went off pitch on the harmonies and some of the high notes. Colton was unexciting but I think he would’ve fared better on this on his own. Kelly/Jason is a vocal mismatch too (as far as Jason not being a very good singer) but the vocal chemistry was there. This had nothing.

10: Joshua/Hollie/Jessica: Disappointing. Joshua sounded best, Jessica couldn’t figure out the sound, and Hollie didn’t sound all that great either. The best moments were the Joshua/Hollie harmonies. This didn’t seem well rehearsed, they didn’t seem comfortable picking up where somebody else had left off and it felt like a staged performance rather than an attempt to get an upbeat message across.

Predicted bottom 3: Elise, Skylar, Hollie
Out: Elise, but she’ll be saved

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I know the judges save will likely be whipped out tonight, because it kind of has to be, but if either Hollie or Elise are on the bottom I really wish they wouldn’t (P2 as well, but there is next to no chance of that happening).  It’s not that I don’t like Hollie or Elise, because I actually like them both a lot, but it seems such a waste of a save.  At best either one will get an extra week.  Hollie has an incredible voice, but she’s not going to get it together enough to make a real run at the title in the next few weeks.   I don’t really want to watch Randy, Steven & Jimmy back over her again next week.  I’m leaving Jennifer out of it because I actually think Jennifer is the most supportive of Hollie, which kind of goes against the meme that Jennifer has it out for the girls or whatever other bull we generally hear week to week.

Elise, I just feel like while she did very well last night, she’s already been saved once (Top 13), and at this point I think she’s going to hit the B3 week to week no matter what she does on stage.  If they save her tonight, she’ll probably just go home next week.

I have no idea who is going home and who to put my votes on…I do think they will use the save tonight for anyone but Hollie and maybe Skylar

Unfortunately, it’s looking like the judges missed their best opportunity to use the save when Erika left.  Since her departure, people have mainly left at the right time.  I think that if she had been saved, Erika could have lasted long enough to justify it.

The same thing happened in Season 8.  Alexis was shockingly eliminated in 11th place (she was considered Top 4 material according to the pundits).  Because it was early in the season, and probably because the producers weren’t sure about some of their favorites (Danny was getting some serious internet hate, Matt, Anoop, and Megan had to be wildcarded, Adam was polarizing), they let Alexis go and ended up kind of throwing it away on Matt Giraud on Top 7 night.

In Seasons 9 and 10, they used the save earlier (Top 9 for Mike Lynche, Top 11 for Casey Abrams), and both savees stayed on for five more weeks.

If Hollie were to get the save tomorrow, I don’t think she’d last more than two weeks more.  I don’t think the audience would really care.  They might care more about Skyler (she’s got a lot of charisma).  Maybe people would get excited about Elise, but I tend to doubt it.  She’s got wonderful musicality and a great voice — but she’s not consistent — she only grabs the stage about half the time.  So, the only girls that should get a save are Jessica and Skyler.

As for the boys — I don’t think Colton is in any danger yet.  Philip’s penchant for twisting up every song to sound exactly the same reminds me of Andrew Garcia, who left in 9th position in Season 9.  Philip’s lasted longer because he’s cuter and he has a more bluegrassy, authentic style.  But I think he’s on his way out — his heart isn’t really in it at this point.  If it’s used for any guy, I think it should be for Joshua, but I also think Joshua might actually be leading the guys.

So, what happens if the bottom voter getter continues to be people who should leave?  I don’t think the judges will use the save to prop up someone and risk having their favorites fall into the bottom because of it.  Maybe we’ll have to have a clip show one week?  Or a surprise non-elimination?  Interesting challenge for Uncle Nigel.

My favorites from tonight were also; Joshua, Jessica, and Elise.

I also think the judges will use the Save tonight.  I still have doubts though if Hollie gets lowest number of voters, will they use save or keep it for their final time next week? If so, that will be anti climatic. But I think Hollie got a lot of votes because on  so many forums, there were people saying they were voting for the first time for Hollie because the judges keep throwing her under the bus.

If anyone else like Elise, Joshua, Skylar, Phil end up being the one facing being booted, I think 100 pct, Judges use Save. I am still skeptical if they will save Holllie only for the following week, one of the ones they praise a lot gets the boot in 6th place??

That would be my Dream Finale for sure !!

I know what you mean; my favorite females never even make the finale like Jennifer Hudson, Melinda Doolittle,  Syesha,  Allison.

impossible to see the videos…it says “content rejected”
also, miss the videos with the mentoring. why have they become so short….?

I promise I am not smoking anything…but I actually understood what Steven meant in his critique of Hollie. LOL  I took it as it had no arc…JLo talks about the “ride” alot in songs…highs and lows that come with singing with emotion and grit.  Hollie has none of that so it was a very flat performance.

Joshua was the best IMO.  It was a very good performance.  But I just can’t see him as a big r&b star.  He seems too “throwback” to me.  Besides, Idol has a terrible track record with r&b singers, so not sure why they are so excited about an r&b winner.

Colton is my favorite on the show and did 2nd best IMO.  In this season where everyone is trying to go big or go home, I appreciate his subtle performances.  I don’t worry about him post Idol.  We have so many CCM Labels here in Nashville…he will come home and get snatched right up.  He will be recording in the best studios in the industry soon after the tour ends.

The next few weeks will be interesting.  I think you will get a much clearer view of how the votes are really shaking out.  I am not sure who is really leading the pack at this point.

I think your B3 this week will be: Hollie, Skylar, and Elise
Hollie should be gone, unless she gets a ton of sympathy votes.  They won’t use the save on Hollie, but they may on anyone else.

Would you prefer she rapped on stage and get her diggity on? Maybe that’s what up tempo means nowadays.

  • Anonymous

Just to initiate a wildfire. I hope the judges save Hollie this week and Joshua screws up next week and goes. I bet J-lo would be so bummed and throw her loubotins at Hollie.

I agree about Lauren. I’ve seen her perform the song with Jason and it is eons above that duet last night. In fact, that duet was awful.

  • Mateja Praznik

I think it’s Hollie’s time to go. She is just not ready for this.

  • Ringo

I find it interesting that AI is adding so much staging to the performances this year.  Joshua’s is the first performance that I recall where an Idol contestant got a background dancer.  Skylar got the full-on fire pits (which had no apparent connection to the song).  It seems like every performance gets at least one musician with them on stage, and more often than not, it’s a line of musicians strung across the arc of that funky stage.  It’s looking more like X Factor and the Voice to me, which is not necessarily good.  (Oh, sure, no guitarists on oversized stilts yet, but Joshua’s dancer did look unnaturally leggy.) ;)

  • Ringo

Yeah, MJ, some of us have a vague recollection of JLo’s and Randy’s critique of Haley’s “You and I”  last year.  ;D  Elise did a good job on the song, but I missed the dynamic interaction between her and the background singers that we saw with Haley’s version last year.  For me, the background singers in Elise’s version were far too “pop-ish” and “pip-ish” (ala Gladys Knight), and it took away from the angsty-ness of Elise’s version.  I am glad, however, that Elise held her own on Haley’s song. ;)

Missed seeing DeAndre and his hometown plus hearing his R&B coolness on the show!  Anyone know what he was going to sing this week?

My favorites last night:  Jessica, Joshua and P2/Elise’s duet.

Jessica:  She always picks obsure songs that sound like it’s something off her new album.  She sings them incredibly well and should be our next Idol.  But I’m waiting for the performance that will be a Must Have for the regular Fan.  This will probably happen after Skylar, Colton and Hollie fans will be looking for a new Idol to vote for.

Joshua:  Love Bruno Mars and no one can out perform him and Bruno’s voice is amazing.  The beginning of Joshua’s performance with the dancer was super cool.  Lost me at the very end when Joshua got shouty.  Chuckled when the judges reluctantly gave him the slow standing O.

P2/Elise Duet:  Love that Goyte song and Pentatonix’s version is the BEST!!!  However, P2 sounded really really good on that song and it was perfect for Elise’s voice!  I hope P2 realizes that he sounds great on this song and sings like that more often.

Everyone else sang okay and their fans were probably happy with their favorite.

I am liking P2’s performances and his fun, lowkey personality more each week.

Elise’s performances are always interesting and look forward to them.

Still not a Skylar nor a Colton fan.  And that Skylar Colton couple thing is nauseating and not even funny and it lasted too long.  Were TPTB trying to silently putting out negative vibes for those two?  I think so.

I didn’t like the other 2 group songs.

Hollie has a good voice and is cute, but looks overmatched and her slurred weird accented speaking voice bothers me for some reason.

My bottom 3:  Skylar, Hollie and Colton

In an access interview after Heejun was eliminated, Steven and Randy said the save can be used top 5 week too. They could have been wrong but that’s what they said.

The video is on YouTube somewhere.

  • Axxxel

I read somewhere in another MJSbigblog thread that Jessica does rap ! I am too “out of touch “for this rap stuff… I would suggest something like “Self control” or “Gloria” sung by Laura Branigan… It is a bit faster… even though I cannot imagine Jessica singing about the “creatures of the night” . I know… I am that vintage. I am not really talking about style of singing, just the speed of singing… Even Whitney Houston sang something faster like “I wanna dance with somebody”…

  • Axxxel

Please be a “Steven” translator on future episodes of American Idol… I remember mentor Adam Lambert telling Casey James (Season 9 , Elvis week) that his song did not have an arc as well.. No opening, middle, climax and end. (just like in storytelling).

  • Axxxel

Just check out http://www.americanidol.com . It is where I usually hanged out before I discovered this MJSbigblog. I don’t have the luxury to watch American Idol on TV so I don’t mind to settle for less (judge’s comments).

  • http://twitter.com/BazzleFjsm Bazzle

On the contrary I thought this was the worst he has ever sung. He just was not in the zone for this one. Elise was good on this one, but since Phillips wasn’t feeling it, the best wasn’t brought out in her. A duet is only as great as the duo as a whole. Last week however, both of them blew me away with Stop Draggin My Heart. Thats when both of them were in the zone.
