POSTING OR DISCUSSING TOP 24 SPOILERS IN THIS THREAD WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC BANNING

Tonight’s episode of American Idol really needed to be 2 hours.  The 1st hour set up the drama, but now we have to wait until next Wednesday for the payoff.  The two-parter would would have made more sense as a 2 hour reality-mini movie.  If the Idol schedule hadn’t changed the two part groups night would have at least aired on consecutive evenings.

I am almost certain there has never been an Idol episode before that contained no performances. There was recap of last night’s show at the beginning and snips of the groups rehearsing, but nobody took the stage tonight. Well, The Betties took the stage, and it was fade to black–another Nigel Lythgoe cliff hanger!

For what it was—1 hour of reality television—it had its entertaining moments. Chief among them was the absolutely hilarious Heejun Han, whose dry quips at the expense of one of his group members, a megalomaniac psycho cowboy  had me ROLLING.

The Symone Black sitch–the girl who fainted. Of course she was OK. She regained consciousness and went to the hospital for some IV fluids…just like I predicted. There were lots of snarks about the judges not moving in to help her, But Jennifer did eventually hop the desk to see if she could do anything, and seemed genuinely concerned.  Randy eventually joined her. Kids formed a prayer circle for for Symone. The medic asked for some soda and eventually Symone  she was able to stand up and walk out with her father, heading for the hospital.

We also see what happened to Symone’s lineup. She and Jeremy Rosado make it through to the group rounds. Special needs teacher, Lauren Mink and Ethan Jones (His dad was in rehab) were cut.

185 hopefuls survive the cut to the group rounds.

Ha ha…I loved the montage of past season’s Hollywood weeks!  “Bling bling and shine on baby!” “I DON’T DO GROUPS” “IT’S NOT JUST YOUR DREAM AT STAKE HERE”.  Oh the memories!

Speaking of which…don’t these kids watch Idol? Of course the producers aren’t going to let them stay in the groups they formed days ahead of time with their buddies! The scramble to form groups of 4 or 5 that contained both group 1 and 2 hopefuls, per Ken Warwick’s orders, took up a lot of the hour.

Tonight’s main players: Alicia Bernhardt, who was so annoying, she couldn’t find a group who would stick with her. I totally lolled at the youngsters who only knew “Joy to the World” as a Christmas song. And there was “Tent Girl”, Amy Brumfield, now known as “Patient Zero” who introduced very nasty stomach flu into the group. She scares the devil away with Jesus!

Note to hopefuls: You don’t tell someone not to make you sick, and then run to hug them. That’s a total #fail.

There was also Brielle Von Hugel or Miss Bossy Pants and her equally bossy mom (Brielle was in a group with Pia Toscano last year).  Because of her prior experience she took charge of the group.  Mom proudly says of Brielle’s “executive style”, “She rules the roost.” Bitchy mom trashes one of the kids. “I don’t want to be a stage mother,” she says disingenuously, “But they all agree.”

Symone comes back from the hospital and HER stage parent daddy takes over.  “I’m not a stage dad,” he helpfully explains, “I’m just a father that’s helping his daughter achieve her dreams. They call them mentors. I’m soon to be a famous mentor.” YIKES. Symone finally finds a group and ditches dad so they can get to work.

As the night wore on, hopefuls began to drop like flies from Amy’s stomach flu. We’re treated to lovely scenes of kids barfing into garbage bags. YAY.

By the next morning, the Betties fall apart over lack of sleep and preparation, but they’re up first and….cliffhanger! We’ll have to wait until next week to find out what happened.

I am guessing the girl who fell off the stage will get put through to the next round…. :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

That would be my guess too.  ;)

ETA: That was a scary thing to watch though. Sounds like from what they were saying was that her blood sugar had dropped too low. That’s pretty serious but at least it’s something you can get proper treatment for.

live link anyone? the one from yesterday isnt working for me…

Good lord.  They really were dropping like flies up in there.

All this medical drama seems like ‘jumping the shark’ to me.

    I. Don’t. Do. Groups!

Ken has been reduced to citing rules to the contestants.

    Even that caused chaos.  lol

  • rayni

Heavens – somebody sang something, pleeaaassse.

  • GS61

The “Joy to the World’ girl is a hoot. I wonder if she can sing?

  • Anonymous

30 mins in and not a single performance??? a little drama is fine with me but i would like to hear some “singing” if they dont mind

Withya.  What is this?  General Hospital?

  • Anonymous

It’s nice that they interrupt the commercials occasionally with a little more story.

  • Anonymous

Why does everyone need to know you’re a cop?  Just shut up and sing, grrrl!

  • Kesia Monteith

Season 9 had the best group round drama I have ever seen, with Mary Powers and her power trip. LOL. But this, spending time following a cop for HALF HOUR trying to find a group? The editing this season is just so damn poor. Geeez…

  • fuzzywuzzy

And taping someone getting sicker by the minute.  Taping people puking now?  Oh joy.

Worst group show ever.  Do they really think that showing all of these sick people is entertaining?

  • GS61

Worse, I think he is so lame he’s pretending to be douche.

I thought this was on for two hours tonight??

  • fuzzywuzzy

What is Nigel thinking?  Maybe Ken is in charge of this show?  lol

  • Kesia Monteith

That is what I am saying! The focus on that cop girl was the biggest waste of TV time I have seen on reality television. Who gives shit about her!? Bad editing to a T.

But this drama b/w cowboy, Heejun, and Phillip? More please! :)

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

Wow by the sounds of it, I’m not missing much lol. I will wait for MJ’s videos!

I was about to watch my recording but after reading these comments I’m not sure it is worth it. I was only going to fast forward to the group performance, but it doesn’t sound like there was hardly any singing going on tonight.

How many groups did they actually show singing???

eta: Ooops never mind, should’ve hit the refresh button….NONE????!!!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Why are they letting the douche cowboy be in charge?  Heejun, speak up already!  lol

  • HappyDaisy

How is a show like this going to attract new viewers and retain ambivalent ones?  Awful.

  • fuzzywuzzy

No singing yet. A total waste of time so far.  Plus, I’m starting to feel a bit flu-ish.  lol

He is.  I’m starting to have an insane dislike for that cowboy dude too.  lol

  • Anonymous

This is the worst filler c**p I have ever been insulted with (I’m sure none of that made sense but neither does this show). What a waste of time. I’m not even really watching and I had to come post my displeasure. If I tweeted I’d tell his nibs sir Nigel.

  • Kesia Monteith

There is just not much…drama. Just people getting sick and the first half hour on a dumb cop trying to find a group. Only cowboy Scotty copycat is causing some riffs, and Heejun providing laughs. When there is a group having an issue, it is minor and the camera moves on, with that group never to be seen again.

    And worse…barely any singing!

  • Anonymous

Where’s all the drama that was promised to us?? some dumb cop lady?? people getting the flu and other various illnesses?? some poor girl passing out and goin to the hospital??  All this and no singing…im highly pissed

OAN: im goin to be so happy when the cowboy guy gets eliminated

  • Anonymous

I know I am in the minority here on this, but I’d rather they get all the drama out in one episode so the next can focus on the singing.  Assuming they actually spend the next episode on the groups singing.  They always seem to rush through those in the past.

  • fuzzywuzzy

They must have been short on real drama, so they used people fainting, puking and feeling ill as filler.  lol

Meanwhile, it looks like there will literally be NO singing in this episode.

  • Anonymous

    I love it “freakin cowboys”.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

If these kids watched a little bit AI they would know that people who practice through all the night never make it.

  • Anonymous

I doubt it.  He’s funny, and has a great personality, which viewers love.

  • Anonymous

I know the critics knocked two hour episodes a few months ago, and it looks like AI believed them, but sometimes two hour episodes are necessary.  The beginning of each new round should be two hours long.

  • GS61

Was this episode a thrown together filler because they cut the audition shows short?
They couldn’t come up with anything better?

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yep.  Absolutely NO singing at all.  They must have let Ken put together this episode.  lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

That, and probably Ken put it together.  lol

  • Anonymous

If i never saw this show about..i wouldnt know what the hell is was about…

  • GS61

He kinder than me, I call them the “Cowgirls.”

  • Anonymous

OMG Are you serious Idol?! You have an episode JUST for drama?! AHHHHHHHH.
    Shouldve been two hours.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I said this on mj’s chat, but I bet this as originally cut as the 2 hour episode that was supposed to air next week on Wednesday. But when they cut that extra audition episode, they ended up taking the first hour and making a stand alone ep out of it. I bet that’s what happened.

  • Kesia Monteith

WHAT DRAMA?! All I saw was vomiting, snide remarks, and a dumb cop trying to find a group LOL

  • Anonymous

Was tonight’s epi Idol’s version of the film Contagion? That really sucked. Even my husband was said WTF? Really bad

  • fuzzywuzzy

Nigel is getting reamed on twitter.  lol

  • Anonymous

What a hot mess and a total waste of an hour!

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

Yeah, I agree. No singing, but I thought it was kind of fun.  And now we see the personalities of some of them.

  • Kesia Monteith

He deserves it. This was a shitty hollywood week episode.

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

So, what happened, Idol needed a filler episode and the editor put this together while watching Contagion?

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

Did they really think we wanted to see a girl puking in a trash bag? Really?

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

**smallvoice** I kinda liked it **/smallvoice**

    LMAO!

Y’all bitch too much. I say that with love. Heh.

  • Anonymous

This episode was supposed to be two hours but they had to do this due to cutting the auditions short. We will see all singing next week.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Even if that’s the reason, there was far too much focus on people fainting, puking, being/getting sick, and not enough on drama between the contestants.  I think that they were short on drama, so had to fill the time somehow.

  • Anonymous

One thing that suprised me tonight was the number of black girls that i was……..they must really suck considering you know

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

So, out of these two days, I’ve found two that I really like… Jen Hirsh and Han. Han more for his personality.

  • GS61

Somewhat overbearing, but definitely not dumb.
That would be the douchey doofus cowboy.

  • tomr

What was this?  Terrible waste of an hour of my life!  Show should have been called “How To Be An A–hole.” Heejun is crowned King of the show and Cop Lady his Queen.  It can only go up from here.  Talk about setting low expectations.

  • sue

I actually loved this episode, it makes me want more! lols. I love how they have subtitles for Heejun and all his bitching about the “cowboy”. :) I also love all the group harmonies while they practice.  I want more Nigel, you got me hook now. A lot of sick folks in this episode, I thought we would see some chunks at one point. lols

I agree that this needs to be 2 hours. The ratings would be incredible if it was 2 hours Nigel, what was he thinking? I love Hollywood week!

  • Kesia Monteith

    LOL true! ;)

  • sue

I guess I am sick, lols. I wanted to be grossed out. I wanted proof that they were really sick, lols. :)

  • sue

     Totally agree!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that tent girl was genuinely sick.  She was as pale as a sheet and looked awful.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

I didn’t actually mind it. You got to see what was going on. Funny that last year Scotty was wandering around trying to find a group.

Heejun is totally growing on me. He’d so fit into my family.

Hoping the next show is mostly singing, but there appears to be a lot of fainting coming up too.

Totally feeling sorry for everyone who got sick. Hard enough to do while you’re feeling good. Must have been torture for some of them.

  • sue

Yeah she did look sick. The rest of them just look like they need to eat or drink some water or go to the bathroom. lols

  • Pat S

Truly the worst episode is American Idol history. Absolutely atrocious.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I need to hear more to solidify my list of favorites, but right now it’s Erik Van Pelt, Baylie Brown, Jen, Lil Lover Man and Ellie. Han is the funniest human alive. Those plus Jam Band-o-riffic Reed singing weird songs are bringing the entertainment. I will totally tune in to watch this crew every week.

It would not have been so boring if they had done a day 1s going first then the day2s.  At least we get to see the groups form faster and less of the horrible boring drama and we could have a sneak peek of more groups rehearsing.  I want to watch a singing competition not a prelude to ER :(

  • Anonymous

I liked Brielle last yr but she’s coming off conceited this yr. Dont like her anymore.

Heejun made the episode for me. The whole cowboy rant was super Lulzy. And OHHH, I cannot wait to see Richie Law crash & burn nxt wk. I just hope Heejun isn’t a casualty.

  • Anonymous

If Heejun doesn’t make it on Idol they can give him his own comedy show.  :)  Phillip even showed some personality tonight.  Other than that……is it next Wednesday yet?  I want some singing!

  • Anonymous

Heejun is so  funny, but he is talented too , so i hope they don’t cut him next week. Do you hear me cowboy boy? :)
Too much drama tonight ,  i was so worry for  tent girl  , she was really looking sick , best wishes to her too next week …..

  • Trina

Heejun was already one of my faves but tonight he ruled. I wanted him to kick some cowboy ass!

  • milwlovesadam

After zipping through the show on my DVR looking for some singing ( this is still a singing competition isn’t it?), all I saw was crap, puke, sick people, drama made up for the cameras, and grandstanding.

What a waste of time, that I’ll never get back.

Wake me up when the singing part starts.

Hmm….this is Hollywood week.  Check back in 2 weeks.

  • Anonymous

WTF was that??? Who edits these shows? I like the drama mixed in with the singing. Why didn’t they make this a two hour show and cut out about half the drama? It wasn’t even interesting drama!

Nigel is making some poor decisions this year leading up to the live shows. Maybe he is second guessing himself with the ratings going down and the threat of competition this year? I don’t know, something seems off.

    Nigel Lythgoe
    @dizzyfeet
I loved tonight’s episode. Without the
drama the journey means nothing. Group night never has performances.
Next week has 4 hours of music.”

That is according to Uncle Nigel. Yippie, 4 hours of music next week!!!! Can’t wait! I still think that tonight’s episode was a lot of fun to watch. I like watching the dynamic of the each group. :)  I floves the drama!

I have loved this show for a long time, but this was not their best effort.  Still, looking forward to the music next week.

  • Anonymous

But what was the drama? Girl falling off stage? Sick people? Groups getting organized? If there was drama, I sure missed it… they were desperate   with the fakery tonight.

  • Anonymous

This is the what, 200th time it jumped the shark? Here are other times when it did:

-When Tamyra Grey was voted off.
    -When Ruben beat Clay
-When the three divas were in the bottom 3.
-When Jasmine Trias kept sticking around.
-When Chris Daughtry was voted off.
    -When Taylor Hicks won.
-When Sanjaya stayed longer than he should have.
-When Melinda Doolittle was voted off.
-When Tatiana and Nick Mitchell were let through.
    -When they added Kara
    -When Kris Allen beat Adam.
-When Alex, Lilly, and Katelyn were voted off.
    -When Paula left.
    -When Ellen was added.
-When they brought in the save.
    -When Josiah Leming was cut.
    -When Simon left.
    -When they added Steven and
    JLo.
-When they lowered the age to 15.
    -When Pia was voted off.
-When there was an all-country finale.

    And of course, this.

The show survived all the “jumped the shark” moments, and I’m sure there will be plenty more “jumped the shark” moments to come!

See you all next week! ;)

  • Incipit

And there’s Nigel’s ethos for “Good TV” in a nutshell – “Without the drama the journey means nothing.” OKFine.

This is the first time I’ve paid any attention to the Hell Week stuff – I
usually go back and just check out mj’s videos for the ones who get
cast, see what they did, if they even interest me.

Just Whoah. IMO, Season7 didn’t miss a step by skipping the whole groups thing!! The worst they could stir up that year was the whole Joshua Lemming bit – and that was a waste of time too. But Nigel must have loved it…especially when Joshua crashed and burned.

I prefer to see a performer who can use the drama for the music, and “Leave it on the stage.”

    JMO.

This episode was supposed to be 2 hours, but everything was pushed back due to Hollywood starting early and the scrapping of the best of the rest episode. It would have felt more like a normal episode if they stuck with the two hours.

  • Anonymous

Somebody made a poor decision or didn’t plan the weeks out very well, because tonight was just bad. You don’t want to hurt any momentum you do have at this point. Someone needs to map out the pre-season a little better next year.

  • Anonymous

I always enjoy the drama of Hollywood week, and the groups are the most dramatic part.  But my mother got really peeved that we got to hear NO singing (other than a few seconds of rehearsal).

It would have been better if it were two hours, so that we got to hear the result of all the drama.  It would have been more okay if the drama episode were Wednesday and the singing was Thursday.  It would have been better if they could have found a way to cut the dramatic scenes in half by showing fewer groups, given us some singing, and teased more drama (with other groups) in the next episode.

But it wasn’t bad.  Just infuriating.  Which I’m sure makes Nigel rub his hands with delight. :)

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

LOL! S10fan!  So true.  There’s a reason MJ’s Blog is subtitled, “I love this cheesy show.”  That’s exactly what it is… a cheesy show.  The show, itself,  is one, big, constant shark jump. If you don’t watch it for the lulz, you’re missing most of the point, really. Seriously, when the Betty’s were struggling to get their pitch, and finally seemed to have found it, then Nigel let the screen go black, I ROARED with laughter. That’s just so Nigel.  Cliff hanger! I picture him in the editing room, teeth all agleam, shouting, “And…… cut! Brilliant! All America will be on tenterhooks!”

Anyway, we’ve got weeks and weeks of singing ahead.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

I have to say, I definitely noticed the lack of water bottles in Hollywood this season. Stay hydrated, kids!! Of course, if it’s a stomach bug going around, they don’t feel like drinking anything, much less water.

Na, Stephen was ok with that, he passed out on stage and fell on the floor many times, so I am thinking he was just used to that, probably remembering old times!!

The reason why this episode sucked:

    1)  All drama, no performances.  In previous years, they would intersperse performance clips with the corresponding group’s rehearsal clips.  That way, the episode was divided by GROUP and not CHRONOLOGICALLY.  I didn’t appreciate the former option until it was gone.  Watching cop lady be unappealing was, frankly, unappealing.

    2)  Only one performer was worth following, and that was none other than Heejun Han.  Thank goodness he was hilarious!!  Probably the funniest Hollywood contestant ever.  And I’ve been watching for a LONG time.

It was a fun show, entertaining and made me laugh a few times. I actually enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes thing and after X-Factor and The Voice, not to mention weeks of bad auditions, didn’t mind not hearing Whitney et all being murdered again. Good job Nigel.. And of course…Heejun is Love.

I am almost certain there has never been an Idol episode before that contained no performances.

What about those episodes where they would reveal the top 24? I remember some seasons there would just be an episode where the top 24 was revealed and only small recap flashback to performances.

Anyway, tonight’s episode wasn’t terrible, but I agree, I wish it was two hours. Next week is going to be great.

I love it, but you missed a few:

    - When Constantine was allowed to compete.
    - When the Huff was invented.
    - When Tatianna and Norman Gentle made the semi-finals.
    - When Brooke White started over.
    - “Paulagate”
    - When Megan Joy sang “Rockin’ Robin.”
    - “Put the Go in Gokey”
    - “Halleluiah” (Lee or Tim, take your pick)
    - “Happy Feet”
    - “Emotionally perfect!”
    - Kat McPhee and Meatloaf
    - Gordon Ramsey disses Mama Langone’s cooking.
    - Jacob Lusk: “If America doesn’t vote for me…”

This is a fun game. :)

Anyone see Deandre in this episode????  Why are they hiding him?????

  • Anonymous

    Wow.  Glad I didn’t watch.  Seems.like.I.missed.nothing.

This was probably the most boring Idol show I have ever seen, and I have seen them all!  Where was the singing? This should have been 2 hours.  Ugh…

poipugirl, I saw DeAndre twice.  One time he was bouncing up and down and his dreds were flopping.

Did anyone see Jessica Sanchez? I thought I saw her walk by the camera.

It wasn’t all because of dehydration or the “Ground Zero” contestant’s bug.

Didn’t Nigel complain in an interview, that some of the vomiting and passing out had to do with too many people guzzling energy drinks and many on empty stomachs?

If you’ve never used them before…It can really eff you up if you over use them.  It can cause violent physical reaction and can also impact you mentally as well.

I ‘whited out’ and suddenly became confused, minutes after guzzling one once.  I learned my lesson and only sip them now…

This was the worst Hollywood episode in American Idol history, and I’ve seen them all.

It’s one thing to have all the drama, but to have all the drama with NO SINGING and to have to WAIT a full week to see the results of their dramatic night is simply unacceptable and a pretty catastrophic production error in my opinion.

It’s bad enough the ratings have been down, to throw this crap on top is just another flaw for Idol S11.

Why couldn’t this either be a 2 hour show or at least do what they’ve done in years’ past and mix in some actual group performances with the night before’s theatrics?

This also makes Idol look like it’s either dragging week to week or at best not flowing properly, and by next Wednesday we will likely get recaps of the drama anyway.

Or maybe it was food poisoning caused by caterers with poor hygiene.

I admit to expecting to hear the groups perform but I actually didn’t mind waiting for the actual performances ’til next week. 2 hours would have just been too long.  Well I should say 3 hours for me because I didn’t watch HWW Part 1 until last night. I thought the find a group drama with annoying cop lady was not interesting.  I felt really bad for Symone with her annoying dad. Glad she still has a shot. And there is no way I would have let tent girl in my group or touched her without a mask and gloves on. Totally agree with MJ on that. But if I remember correctly, she didn’t have GI issues.  I heard her say that.  So she is NOT patient Zero.  This show gave me the opportunity to be amused by these kids’ drama and the hilarious Heejun ragging on that crazy Cowboy Scotty 2.0. Classic Idol.

what? Your comment is confusing. I have no idea what you mean.

There were lots of snarks about the judges not moving in to help her [Symone]

I thought that if there is a medical emergency, the best thing you can do as a bystander is stay out of the way of people who know what they’re doing and let them help. I highly doubt Steven, Jennifer, and Randy know much about first aid.

Hopefully with no performances this episode that means that next episode will be full of performances with little drama. But with Nigel as producer, I highly doubt that will be the case.

I don’t know who in the world thought we needed to see 2 hours of people getting physically ill on tv.  That is not entertainment.  I don’t mind drama but it’s all the other stuff that we didn’t need to see last night that bothered me.  I agree with windmills about Heejun.  He was pure entertainment.

  • hcpoirot

THis is a waste of 1 hour of my time that I cannot get back. Not even a single group performances. What the heck?

If Hee Jun make it to the final 24, he will had lots of votes based on his personality alone so far. If he can sing very well, he will be a force to reckoned with.

That it. Hee Jun and his groups give a bit drama in this episode. Others are meh. The lady cop. The falling girl and NIgel promise us another medic. UGHHH.

Don’t know why anyone is so sure he won’t get the country vote – I am part of the country vote.  I’d vote for him.

I always liked Hollywood week because of all the group antics so this episode I liked.  Ive already found a few contestants to totally dislike, a yearly requirement yanno.  Still havent found one to totally love tho.

I agree there have been a multitude of times that Idol has “jumped the shark” but these belong to we, the fans:

-When Tamyra Grey was voted off.
    -When Ruben beat Clay
    -When Lee beat Crystal
-When the three divas were in the bottom 3.
-When Jasmine Trias kept sticking around.
-When Chris Daughtry was voted off.
    -When Taylor Hicks won.
-When Sanjaya stayed longer than he should have.
-When Melinda Doolittle was voted off.
    -When Kris Allen beat Adam.
-When Alex, Lilly, and Katelyn were voted off.
    -When Pia was voted off.
-When there was an all-country finale.

And, Paula leaving definitely wasn’t “jumping the shark”.  Plus, I would argue that not only was Simon leaving not a problem, but it was a season too late.

I’m realllly hoping Idol doesn’t do Motown week. Every year. I hate it so much lol.

yeah,  I mean, I liked her personality well enough…wouldn’t mind sitting next to her on a plane or anything, yet

… it just wasn’t “interesting” .. not funny,  not strange ,  not creative….certainly not after the part where her group ditched her.

Did I see Scott Dangerfield in the audience??  Did he audition again this year?
