American Idol 10 Top 9 Sing Songs From the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Next week, the Top 9 return to the Idol stage to perform songs from the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.

The kids will be accompanied by legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck, who will be performing with Ray Chew and the American Idol band.

Plus, Season 4 Idol alum, Constantine Maroulis is set to perform on Thursday’s results show!

The Rock hall celebrates any genre that has had an influence on Rock n Roll, including pop, folk, country, R&B, Rap and more. This theme is wide open. Just check out a list of Rock Hall inductees to speculate what the kids might be singing this week.

  • yellin

James = Zeppelin, maybe Kashmir or Stairway..one can hope:)

  • briguypdx

What a silly theme. This looks much broader than Motown (hell, it encompasses most of the Motown stars). And, yet … they’ve probably only cleared about 20 songs total. Nearly impossible to speculate on this theme.

  • jammasta

Casey could do A Little Less Conversation, I think.

One of Scott’s inspirations is Elvis, so I really think Scott will take him on, too. I think it’ll work well. Cue the vomit from some people, but I would think Hound Dog or Heartbreak Hotel could be cool.

We already know Pia’s doing River Deep, Mountain High unless there’s a change.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jacob take on What A Wonderful World or Stand By Me, but I think those are a little too predictable.

It is kinda silly, but it has been done before (AI7 Top 4, for example… I think once or twice in another season.)

I wonder if it’s too broad, though. Themes that are too broad aren’t always good.

  • primeminister

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jacob take on What A Wonderful World or Stand By Me, but I think those are a little too predictable.

Oh, you know Jacob won’t be able to resist singing “A Change is Gonna Come.” He did it as his last audition before the Top 24.

Paul should do some James Taylor… “Fire and Rain” maybe?

I think Scotty might do some Elvis. Looking forward to him singing something other than country. Maybe he can countrify “Love Me Tender.” lol

  • gangreen29

That is really cool about Jeff Beck

  • Susan

I stand by wanting “Roxanne” for James lol.

Don’t care about the rest except that I want Haley’s to be a trainwreck so I never have to listen to her again.

  • jammasta

Oh, you know Jacob won’t be able to resist singing “A Change is Gonna Come.” He did it as his last audition before the Top 24 right?

Not sure… I’m just looking at the artists right now and stopped at a few.

I think Scotty might do some Elvis. Looking forward to him singing something other than country. Or maybe he can countrify “Love Me Tender.” lol

I think that would be successful, but personally I would want him to do something more uptempo from Elvis. Either way I think I’d love it (and some people will unleash Hell, lol).

  • milwlovesadam

James’ cover of Kashmir is on You Tube from pre-Idol. Very nice vocal.

I can’t even begin to speculate on what they might sing. Such a huge range.

  • http://www.lindafoltz.com linda2u

Haley – Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” (not Queen’s version) or Janis Joplin “Piece of My Heart”
Casey – Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Woman” or Allman Brothers “Whipping Post”
Lauren – Linda Ronstadt “When Will I Be Loved” or Bonnie Raitt “Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About”
    James – Aerosmith “Dream On”
Jacob – Ray Charles “Unchain my Heart”
Scotty – Elvis – “Heartbreak Hotel” or Johnny Cash “I Walk the Line”
Paul – Beatles “Hey Jude” or Bob Dylan “Along the Watchtower”
Pia – Aretha Franklin – “Chain of Fools” or “RESPECT”
Stefano – Chuck Berry – “Johnny B. Goode”

  • jammasta

Pia – Aretha Franklin – “Chain of Fools” or “RESPECT”

If we didn’t already know what she was singing (I think), either of these would be PERFECT to put her back in my running.

  • gangreen29

Lauren – Linda Ronstadt “When Will I Be Loved”

    Great suggestion!

  • smeggingnuts

Is it to much to hope for some Talking Heads?

  • Inconnu

The kids will be accompanied by legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck, who will be performing with Ray Chew and the American Idol band.

    Wow, Jeff Beck! Awesome!

  • jammasta

Wow, Madonna is on this list?

James doing Like A Prayer is still in the running! (Not.)

Or some Metallica. Honestly, I kinda want him to go back to a ballad like Maybe I’m Amazed.

  • ReginaFilange

This theme is going to be deceptively narrow. I’m sure there are a LOT of inductees that aren’t represented by even one song on the list the idols get. Doubtful that anyone has the option of doing any AC/DC or Bob Dylan.

  • platoken

Scotty needs to do Elvis or Johnny Cash!

  • Inconnu

Honestly, I kinda want him to go back to a ballad like Maybe I’m Amazed.

Yes, James is due for a ballad, a cool one too. Time to go for the kill on the vocals!

ETA: Another group photo that I like.

  • songsungblue

Scotty needs to do Elvis or Johnny Cash!

Why the hay-ell not? He’s pissed on everyone else already with his own personal brand of bland-tastic. Ugh.

  • jammasta

Speaking of Johnny Cash, if Scott does Ring of Fire, I will lawl so hard. He’ll need to take off his shirt and shoot nipple heat lasers to create a ring of fire in order to even get the buzz Adam did >_>.

Or screw with the lyrics. “I fell onto my freaking nuts of wonder, said ow ow ow and my voice got higher, and it hurts hurts hurts… these nuts of wonder, these nuts of wonderrrrrr”.

…Point being, I hope Scotty knows Idol history enough not to do that song. I love Scotty and the backlash for doing a song Adam did would be horrendous even if he stuck with the country-fied version.

Actually, that’s the only Johnny Cash song I know >_>.

Dude. This might sound crazy, but I think James could make a killing on an Aretha Franklin song. It would be out of the box, wild, yet still very James, I think. If Kris could do something like that with She Works Hard For The Money or David Cook on First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, why the hell not?

  • lorenzo

James has to do “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” which my man Prince slayed on the whole of fame show…just sayin’…

He did the “Change is…” so he wont do that again, speaking of “Change..” and since my man Adam sang it.. What the HELL happened to him at Ga Ga’s party? he got thrown out?

  • sf3456

James has to do “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” which my man Prince slayed on the whole of fame show…just sayin’…

Yes, I remember that. Everybody just backed the hell out of the way and let Prince do his thing. That was awesome.

About the picture — poor Jacob. All off to the side by himself. His last buddy just got the boot. He doesn’t get along with any of those people that’s left. Maybe that’s a good thing. Friendships will just ruin the concentration.

  • mozart4898

Someone said in another thread (maybe last night?) that the best thing James could do at this point would be to totally do a 360…I mean, 180, and sing a ballad. That honestly seems to me to be a great idea for him at this point if he’s got the chops to really kill one from the list they’ve got. That’s the thing, this is so wide open it’s impossible to really speculate what they might sing (doesn’t mean it’s not fun though).

As has already been said, there’s no excuse for not finding something to fit your style here…as long as it’s available on the list. The trickiest pick might actually be for Paul. (And I do understand he’s struggling with his voice and it might not normally be the same sort of difficulty.) I wonder if he could find something where his current limitation might actually work to his advantage, or at least that he could work around. To me this is nearly an ideal theme week in that it’s not so narrow that the songs should all be similar.

Casey would be wise to perhaps go a ways back to something with roots in jazz – maybe even Louis Armstrong or something. That’s where his musicianship will shine. Pia already supposedly named her song, so there’s that. I think Lauren might pull a surprise and not pick a country(ish) song, and instead go more bluesy or even classic rock. I don’t think the girl is dumb…I think she’s got some good instincts but they’re overshadowed in many people’s eyes when she opens her mouth to talk. She may see a good chance to pick something from a somewhat different genre and really nail it – she was heading that way this week but I think more up-tempo will play better to her strength.

To be honest, from the extent of what I’ve watched, those are about the only ones I care about at this point either – James, Casey, Pia (only because I’m hoping that she’ll inject some life into her technically beautiful singing), and Lauren. Scotty is good, and I like country, but he’s the first case I’ll ever truly admit of someone on this show just bugging me visually – compared to the voice that comes out. The voice doesn’t fit the kid singing, and it’s weird. Put him on the radio or at least where I can’t see him, and I’d think he’s great.

  • Swind

Now is the time for Haley to do some Janis Joplin. Can’t wait for next week.

  • mozart4898

Swind says: 04/01/2011 at 3:20 amNow is the time for Haley to do some Janis Joplin. Can’t wait for next week.

Can’t see her having nearly the chops to pull it off…she’s got the growling part down but other than that, I don’t see her having the range nor the actual passion. I think Haley + Janis = trainwreck.

On 2nd thought – Haley, do some Janis. We’ve gotten rid of 4 girls in a row, why not make it 5?

Is the theme Artists Inducted into RRHOF and their catalog, or the list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll? The list was compiled by the curator of the RRHOF, historians and critics.

    Here’s the list:

Celine Dion’s not on the list. Fortunately Pia’s already found her loophole though.

I’ve been to the RRHoF, and this is almost another free choice week. The place has so many crossover artists in it from country and RnB backgrounds, nobody is going to have to get out of their comfort zone. I expect a disappointing week, where me may get just as many non-rock songs as rock songs.

  • NOLA

No Elvis for Scotty. I’d rather him do Hank Williams, Sr.

  • geekygirl

amadcow2 I really like your list! Casey should so do Moondance, he could break out his bass again. Excellent choices for the rest too. Although I’d rather see Scotty do Hank or Johnny as well, Elvis could be a disaster! Would love to see Jacob tackle Try a little Tenderness as it starts out slow and he could go ballistic at the end.

The front runners must get out of their comfort zone sooner than later if they want to keep their position, and I am talking about Scotty, James and Pia.
It’s up to them and also up to the producers to nudge them a bit, but the theme doesn’t necessarily make as much difference of a difference as the arrangements.

When AC/DC was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the presenter was Steven Tyler.

Although I’d rather see Scotty do Hank or Johnny as well, Elvis could be a disaster!

Scotty listed Elvis as a huge influence on him and I can’t see him passing up the chance to do an Elvis song.

I think that Janis would be great for Haley, but Crystal slayed Me and Bobby McGee last year and I don’t think Haley could top that with any other Janis song, so that’s why I went with Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane for Haley. I think she could do well with Somebody to Love. Remember Grace was the sex kitten standard, totally hot, totally rockin’.

  • JudyOhio

I’d like Scotty to do Hank or Johnny Cash too. AI could end up having an Elvis week later so no use to waste an Elvis song next week. (Too bad they don’t know the themes weeks in advance because I DO want to hear him sing an Elvis song!)

eta: After posting saw your past NOLA….GOOD choices for Scotty!

  • springboard

amadcow2, this a great list, but there is no way Stephano would pull off ‘Loosing My Religion’.

Looking at all the suggestions made me think that more male singers had a deep voice in the past, and I like deep voices. Come on Scotty, blow us away with ‘House Of Rising Sun’ or an Elvis number!!!

  • kansasfemale

    james – enter sandman

  • JudyOhio

I’d like to see Taylor back on as a guest, but I wouldn’t want him to be all careful and trying to please AI. I’d like him to come on and take ‘em to church with his own special brand of OTT.

You’re probably right, but when I put that list together I thought what songs (except for Pia) would give each Idol a chance to have a true ‘moment’ if they could pull it off. Stefano really needs a kick in the pants right now, or he’s gone next week. The same for Paul really, but rather than going for Bob Dylan, which isn’t as accessible to the voting public, I thought it best he go for the extra processed cheese of Sweet Caroline. I totally hope Casey does Moondance and if James did a soulful version of Behind Blue Eyes (could be almost autobiographical for him) it would push him to the top.

Technically true, but considering how limited the list of cleared songs appears to be, we’ll probably be hearing songs that we’ve heard many times before. I was shocked to hear that AI had only cleared 20 Elton John songs.

Good for Constantine! I’m not a fan, but he’s done very well in creating an original role in a hit Broadway musical and received a Tony award nomination for it.

Another good one for Scotty, would be “For the Good Times” by Ray Price.

It was covered by Elvis Presley

I have a question for those who follow country music. I’m not sure, but to me, Scotty appears to be a pretty “traditional” country artist. Is there a place in the current country market for someone like him? Are there still a lot of people who like his kind of country music and how big is the market for it?

  • NOLA

Absolutely, fuzzywuzzy. Nashville will welcome him with open arms. I adore traditional country music and not too crazy about this new country crap…Shania, Carrie, etc. etc.

Country music writers are probably working on songs for him now. The market is wide open for all types of country singers. I’m an huge country fan and I listen to both the traditional and the crossover country. The fact that country singers have such longevity in the business is evidence that the listeners still embrace the traditional. Randy Travis is still putting out records.

  • swish5

With David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee / Crystal, it seems like they took a song and made it their own (they did it). This year it seems like the kids are just performing a song tailored for them by American Idol people… It’s more of a production and less of an artist.
(didn’t mean to leave out David A and Adam – just didn’t really follow them at the time)

  • calimari

I would rather see Paul do “Losing my Religion” over Stefano. And I don’t want to hear anyone do “Sweet Caroline”. I hate hate hate that song and am still grossed out from when David Arch did it.

  • Mary102

Hmm, if Scotty did an Elvis ballad, that could work really well, tbh. Like “Can’t Help Falling In Love”.

  • Mary102

It is kinda silly, but it has been done before (AI7 Top 4, for example… I think once or twice in another season.)

S8 had rock week as top 4.

I saw James and Kashmir thrown out as a suggestion. One of my fav songs of all time, but that would not translate well to the idol stage imo. It’s like 7:30 long and complicated. Sorta like when Michael Johns foolishly tackled Day in the Life during Beatles week, lol.

How do you know he does not get along wtih the people left? He was comforting Lauren when she was crying about the girls leaving. He seems genuinely nice as do all of them in this group this year.
He was hugging Casey last night and was the first one to embrace him backstage after the save. He was hugging others who were safe last night too as he was sitting on the end. He seems like he gets along with all of them from what we are seeing on camera. What makes you think he does not get along with the others? Plus those pictures are probably posed a little.
Check out other pictures where Jacob is in the middle and not just with Naima.

  • mmb

Cue the ” of all the songs sung by all of the great acts in the r&r hall of fame why did you pick that?” critique, while failing to tell the audience the poor kids had to pick from a list of 20 songs.

  • leome

I don’t know if it’s even part of the list, but I’d really like if Haley did Crimson and Clover.
I think this week she could really have a great moment, I hope she picks a good one.

That bodes well for Scotty, and I’m not surprised that he seems to have a lot of voting support. He seems like a nice guy too. I think that he’ll be one of the final two.

  • chearts77

This is the week Scotty can whip out an Elvis tune. I’m leaning more towards an Elvis ballad. He’ll melt the girls hearts for sure. Love Me Tender or Can’t Help Falling In Love.

  • Allison

One of Scott’s inspirations is Elvis, so I really think Scott will take him on, too. I think it’ll work well. Cue the vomit from some people, but I would think Hound Dog or Heartbreak Hotel could be cool.

As long as someone does CCR, I’m good.

Someone should do Roy Orbison’s Crying – maybe Lauren. Would be a great ballad for Pia.

Casey could kill with a Dr John song.

Haley – He Called Me Baby (Will get her the Bones vote).

I agree, Allison. If he does Elvis, I’d rather him do a ballad. If he goes uptempo, he stands the chance of coming across karaoke and copycat. He needs to do an Elvis ballad, IMO.

There are a lot of really good suggestions on this board, hope the contestants are reading this blog! Nola that is genius for Scotty with You Don’t Know Me. I know Elvis is his idol but I would be nervous bout that. Esp as he does an Elvis impresonation and it could be really corny or cheesy.

Crying for Lauren is also brilliant.

  • tawny

    For Scotty:

Johnny Cash:Ghost Riders in the Sky

The Highwaymen: The Last Cowboy Song (Cash was part of this group along with Waylon, Willie and Kristofferson)

Too bad Waylon & Willie aren’t in the RRHOF – I want Moma’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys

I wonder is he knows any Hank Sr. songs that’s going way back.

Elvis songs: Teddy Bear or Fever (Nice and low but possibly cheesetastic!)

  • Valentin432

Crying for Lauren is also brilliant.

I disagree. Carrie performed Crying on top 3 night. I think it’s a bad idea to perform another song that is associated with her (after I Told You So).

There are enough good songs outside of that one to chose.

  • justshootme

I’d love to hear Scotty do some olde time country. Hank Williams Sr.’s I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry please. And it’s been covered by Elvis and Johnny Cash, so three birds with one stone, lol.

His performance tics (the smirk, etc) suggest that song might not be a good fit.

  • Nina1

I can’t picture this kid moving around a lot and Heartbreak would inspire comparisons to Elvis.

  • voodooldy55

Lauren has already blown Carrie Underwood out of the water by singing “I Told You So” w/Scotty. It surely wouldn’t look good for her to totally shame her by singing “Crying” by Roy Orbison.
I think it’s a great idea, Lauren would be great with that song.

Pia should sing something upbeat for a change, she has gotten so boring with her ballads. She needs some pizzaz, and some movement when she sings.

  • rk349097

I’m not even going to bother picking a song for Pia, because we already know what she’s doing. Here are my picks for the rest of the contestants (and yes, I know that there’s no chance in hell of some of these songs being cleared):

    1. Casey: I Don’t Want to Grow Up, Tom Waits

    2. Haley: Because the Night, Patti Smith

    3. Lauren: Edge of Seventeen, Stevie Nicks (yes, I know she’s not in the HOF as a solo artist)

    4. Jacob: September, Earth, Wind and Fire

    5. James: Search and Destroy, Iggy and the Stooges

    6. Paul: Lost In the Supermarket, The Clash (think the Afghan Whigs’ cover)

    7. Scotty: I’m So Lonesome, I Could Cry, Hank Williams

    8. Stefano: Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song), Billy Joel

The kids will be accompanied by legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck

I don’t care what the Idols sing. My eyes/ears will be on Jeff.

  • Trina

This should be a really good week for everyone. There’s such an amazing, diverse group of artists in the HOF.I dont know if James would do a song hes already sung pre-AI but gah his renditon of While My Guitar Gently Weeps is fantastic and I think his voice has matured a little since then, I would kill to hear him sing that now.Carrie’s Cryin’ was amazing but I dunno, it wasnt really a moment for her like “Alone”. You’d be surprised how many young people I talk to who didnt watch AI back then and dont even know what she sang on the show.

  • MaryS-NJ

Lauren has already blown Carrie Underwood out of the water by singing “I Told You So” w/Scotty.

Uh, well…Your milage varies. I thought it was a cute, sweet duet between Lauren and Scott (better for her than for him, IMO) but a little awkward. Carrie Underwood isn’t always my cup of tea, but she’s got pipes, poise and style that Lauren can only dream of. Of course, Lauren has years of growing up to do so maybe someday she’ll be as good as Carrie.

Pia’s already disclosed her song choice. As long as the PTB don’t make her change it, I can dream that it will be the Ike & Tina version of “River Deep, Mountain High” and not the Celine Dion cover.

I hope Scotty sings “Love Me Tender” if he chooses Elvis.

I hope Lauren does not sing anything by Aerosmith. Her sucking-up to Steven Tyler annoys me enough as it is. I think she could rock Bonnie Raitt and add a little twang to it.

With all the potential choices, and some amazing artists who are inductees at the R&RHoF in a variety of genres, I assume the song list will have 20 songs to which Idol already has the rights. I love thinking about the possibilities but the choices they give these kids are actually pretty limited.

The kids will be accompanied by legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck

I don’t care what the Idols sing. My eyes/ears will be on Jeff.

I am with you there. Much more excited about Jeff Beck than by anything else for next week. Love him! Maybe we will hear someone (Haley?) do “I Put a Spell on You” – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (the Beck and Joss Stone cover).

I wish they would post the song lists – didn’t they do that last year? I seem to remember the lists being posted on ITunes and there were usually about 50 song choices. The 20 for Elton week was a surprise. Very limiting.

I like the list I compiled on page 1.

James did a snippet of “Dream On” for the second part of his initial audition, but I think he’d kill a version where he got to sing the chorus.

And I think Lauren SHOULD NOT do Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. First of all, Allison KILLED that song. Secondly, even though Allison was young, you COULD envision her having sex, where it’s clear that Lauren’s much “younger”. She could do “Something to Talk About” … it’s got a country feel and is more upbeat. I also think she could do well on Linda Ronstadt’s “When Will I Be Loved”.

Casey’s already done “I Put a Spell on You” … so that’s out for Haley. I like the suggestion for Haley to do “Crimson and Clover” … she would do well. I also like my suggestion – Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” (not Queen’s) or Janis’s “Piece of my Heart”.

Scotty has a lot of options. I just wish he’d stop holding the mike sideways and making all those weird looks. He creeps me out.

I LOVE the suggestion for Casey to do Van Morrison’s “Moondance”. I’ve been tweeting him …. telling him I’m missing his large bassy :) Would love for him to bring it out and totally jazz it up!

I think Jacob would do anything Ray Charles sang well …. but would particularly like “UnChain my Heart” because it’s a little more upbeat.

And I wish Pia would do Aretha – “Chain of Fools” or “Respect” – she’d kill those. She keeps choosing Celine, Whitney and Mariah … all three singers who I don’t own ONE song from. Where’s the Pia that rocked “Grenade”?

I still like my suggestion for Stefano – Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode”. I can hear his voice on it.

Paul could do a decent job of “Hey Jude” … I think the song would suit his rasp. If they can clear Bob Dylan I can hear him singing Dylan’s version of “Along the Watchtower” (Jimi Hendrix also covered Dylan’s song). But Paul is my least favorite that’s left, so actually, I’m not very emotionally invested in what he sings.

Neil Diamond was just inducted into the Hall. I think he mentored in Season 5 or 6. I could see several of the contestants doing well with his songs.

Paul: Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon, or Cherry Cherry
Pia: And the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind
James: Holly Holy ( The live version from Hot August Night in ’72), or Cherry Cherry, again, live from ’72. Much more rocked out.
Casey: Solitary Man or Red Red Wine

“Something to Talk About” was the song I envisioned Lauren singing, but I like your Ronstadt suggestion too!

Casey’s already done “I Put a Spell on You”

Forgot about that – guess I can give up my dream of the Beck/Joss Stone version.

Pia announced last night she was singing “River Deep, Mountain High.” Alas, we will probably get more of the Celine cover than the original.

  • milwlovesadam

I love “I Can’t Make you Love Me” , it’s one of my all time favorite songs. Allison slayed it. George Michaels has a great rendition of it. Adam absolutely knocked it out and burned it into my brain with his You Tube version at the Upright Cabaret.

I just hope that if one of this year’s crop does cover this song, they can do it justice.

This guessing game we play is fun, and the suggestions that I made on page 2 reflect more my taste than anything else, because by now the kids will have chosen their songs and are well under way having them sanitized for our protection.

I thought Lauren would do well with Bonnie Raitt and I adore “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. Additionally, based on her style, I think she does better with a soulful song than ‘shakin’ it up out there’ as she put it the other night. She’ll probably gravitate to something else anyway.

Haley would do well with Jefferson Airplane, or Fleetwood Mac. Didn’t they already suggest she do Stevie Nicks? So, I’m betting that she does Dreams, although I’d love to see her do Gold Dust Woman or Rhiannon.

Casey would do well with Van Morrison or Tom Waits, but I think that Van is more accessible to the voting public.

James needs to step it down a notch and Behind Blue Eyes by The Who, or perhaps Going to California by Led Zeppelin would be nice.

Again, all in all it’s just a game. I would like to see the cleared list on iTunes like they did last year. We all know what Pia’s going to sing. I hope she actually moves around the stage.

Goode”

You and I are definitely thinking alike. I have many of the same songs for the same contestants on work in progress list. We do know already that Pia is “River Deep, Mountain High”, probably ala Celine, but oh well. I like your choices, but I have a few others I am thinking about. I really, really wish they would post the cleared song list on ITunes like they did last year.

Personally, I have REALLY wanted to hear Scotty sing Elvis – not something Elvis covered, but a song really associated with Elvis. The girls would swoon with “Love Me Tender” but I would like to hear him tackle “Heartbreak Hotel.”

  • JudyOhio

Stefano – On piano singing River of Dreams (Billy Joel)

Scotty – I Walk the Line (anything Hank Williams Sr., Elvis, or Johnny Cash). And hope he drops that final pause followed by the low, low voice singing of the very last word of the song along with the eyebrows lift to accent it…. (that’s getting very predictable)

  • NOLA

Scotty – “Seven Spanish Angels” by Ray Charles
Ray Charles: The Complete Country & Western Recordings 1959-1986

This was done as a solo, without Willie Nelson

  • Susan

Stefano – On piano singing River of Dreams (Billy Joel)

I was thinking something similar, maybe “Piano Man.”

Scotty – Can’t Help Falling in Love

    Haley – Brass in Pocket

    Paul – Sharp Dressed Man

    James – Roxanne… but as a ballad

Jacob – Fantasy (Earth, Wind and Fire)

Lauren – I like someone’s Linda Rondstadt suggestion.

    Casey – something jazzy

  • PamReid

Stefano’s best performance was Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are (even if it was the Bruno Mars arrangement), so a Billy Joel song would probably be a smart choice for him. Maybe “Honesty” or “River of Dreams” ?

As for Lauren, I have thought and thought about it, and I am leaning towards her staying away from Bonnie Raitt, since the two obvious songs have been done on Idol so many times. I love the Linda Ronstadt idea for her – “When Will I Be Loved” or “I’m Leaving it All Up to You”?

I really want to hear Scotty sing Elvis. He can do it.

Still working on my list, which I know is a waste of time since we have no way of knowing what the approved song list is. Still, fun to guess and fun to listen to the old music – I am really enjoying that part.

Umm, the Bruno Mars song is not a Billy Joel cover.

  • Dlynne

Paul tweeted this today about his song:

    @PMcDonaldAI10
Good day today. I’m super thankful to still be around. I feel good about my song this week. I get to be me. Should be fun.

Don’t know what I was thinking – thanks for correcting me. I think my brain is tired. When I was looking at Billy Joel songs for Stefano, I picked his “Just the Way You Are” then made an incorrect leap to the “he already sang this song.” Must be a sign of listening to WAY too many songs. They are running together in my head. So, maybe Stefano WILL sing Joel’s “Just the Way You Are.” I think it suits him.

  • sherimoonzombie

^^You know, it made me google the Billy Joel song though because I had totally forgotten he did one by that same name. =)

  • sherimoonzombie

Photo shoot complete. Heading to the studio to track with the one and only @ONLY1DARKCHILD! I’m excited about this one.

Hope this is a good sign. Last time he tweeted stuff about being excited and doing a song he really ‘felt’ was on Tracks of My Tears — def his best performance since the semis. Would love to see him do something that recalls the engergy and vibe of his band’s stuff.

  • irby

Paul – I keep thinking of so many things he could sing. I would LOVE to see him tackle George Harrison. Jeff Beck could break out the slide guitar – it could be awesome! I’d especially like to see “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” or “What Is Life.” I could also see him doing Tom Petty. Or some later Elvis – “Kentucky Rain” or maybe “Always On My Mind.” But the George Harrison stuff would be great.

James – I agree with the Led Zep suggestion, but should stay away from Whole Lotta Love if he wants to seem distinct from Adam Lambert. Maybe Over The Hills And Far Away? It would give him a chance to show off the softer side of his voice at the beginning.

I’m so tired of Scotty that I almost don’t care what he sings, but he might redeem himself a little if he sings something with a rockabilly feel – maybe some of the Elvis he loves or That’ll Be the Day by Buddy Holly.

Lauren – “What It Takes” by Aerosmith. This is a little “adult” for Lauren, but she seemed to pull off I’m The Only One okay, so maybe it doesn’t matter so much. It’s rock with a country feel, and I think she could slay it.

Stefano – like the Billy Joel suggestion

Jacob – “I Think I’m Going Out of My Head” by Little Anthony and the Imperials. This is a nice soft song that builds to some bigger notes. I think it would be perfect for him. Luther Vandross also did a nice version of this song.

Haley – Janis Joplin? I think Haley would sound good on Linda Rondstadt – maybe Blue Bayou? Or maybe she could do “What’d I Say” by Ray Charles?

I’m having a hard time with Casey (over him) and I guess we know what Pia will sing.

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

Steven Tyler mentioned that he didn’t want to hear any Aerosmith during this year, so I doubt that anyone will do an Aerosmith song.

  • irby

Hmm, I missed STy saying that. No clue what to recommend for LA then.

  • TyraRay

I’m really excited to see what Paul is going to sing, seeing as he said ” its more like him “‘… And I just listened to his band on YouTube ! Pretty great stuff! Sounds way better singing his originals then covers on idol!
As for Casey, let’s hope he sings some jazzy tune ! His last ” rock ” performance didn’t work too well… Hahaha ( still love you, Casey ! )

It’s come to the point where I no longer care what Scotty sings. I know it’s going to sound the exact same as every other week.

With David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee / Crystal, it seems like they took a song and made it their own (they did it). This year it seems like the kids are just performing a song tailored for them by American Idol people… It’s more of a production and less of an artist.
(didn’t mean to leave out David A and Adam – just didn’t really follow them at the time)

i wholeheartedly agree with this and this is one of the reasons i am not really invested in idol this year
i definitely felt a “spark” ,i was a major cooktard and was definitely crystalized last year and boooooooooooo did me in so much that i skipped an entire season when he didnt win
but this year meh good singers i’m just not feelin the substance behind it to grab me and pull me in
