Gangreen29 continues her series on rumored American Idol 10 Top 40 contestants via Joe’s Place Blog!

Today’s featured hopeful is an R&B singer…

***

Jimmie Allen – I’m much more impressed with his recordings over the one video of his live singing. Jimmie could be the current R&B singer idol has wanted since the beginning, he certainly has the right look. He has a nice smooth voice, but he doesn’t have the type of power vocals that most idol contestants have.

I agree with MJs assessment that the recordings are much better than the live in studio video. BUT I really like him. I am afraid though, that this type of contestant cannot win AI. While his sound is extremely current, typically AI voters see this more subdued style as inferior to someone that gets up there and “sings their face off”. I guess we will see how versatile he is, but this one I like.

This is the first contestant I’m really excited about, but then I’m a sucker for any music that is rooted in the blues. I think he could go pretty far if he holds up under the pressure, and I think Iovine will like him.

  • Valentin432

That’s one type of contestant the show is lacking the most in the past few years considering what the current market is. He will need to establish a clear identity outside what is currently being done tough.
Hope his voice sounds as good during the show than on the recordings, he could be a Jermaine Sellers type disapointment otherwise.

  • TwigLA

I really liked the recorded song. I like his voice and look.

Good looking, likable guy, and I would like him if he could sing live, but that live recording sounded really bad. He needs to mate with Anoop or something.

  • Suzanne

Chris Brown has a weak voice as well, but people love his recordings.

  • JazzRocks

There are many popular recording artists with weak voices & people obviously like them. Inexplicable to me but so be it.

The 3rd one is pretty good. The first 2 not so much.

  • Marie23

yeah this is the only one that I’m seriously excited about, listened to his studio songs, sounds really great, will be rooting for him, even if he might not even go that far. But you’ll never know,

  • Incipit

If the Producers want someone in that category, why don’t they find someone who ‘can’ sing live? That’s what they’ll have to do on the show – unless TPTB have other ideas they’re not sharing. I don’t disagree that it would be a genre that AI hasn’t tapped – but if they were serious, I think they would pick a serious contender. That live example wasn’t good.

I hoped they were done with casting “radio voices” (Kara) – that need a studio to sound reasonable.

You can not judge how someone sounds live from one video. He is the one in that commercial where Randy is saying he was one of the best so far so maybe that video of him singing live isn’t doing him justice. I rather have someone like him on the show than another white guy with a guitar, a folksy singer, or a bland person who just stands there and does nothing which are the types that have been dominating the past couple of seasons. With help of a mentor, he could do really well, I just want someone different than what we have been seeing lately to do well on this show.

I like his recorded voice. We’ll see how he does live! Cool.

  • larc

I’m suspicious of somebody who sounds good on studio tracks, but not singing live. Almost anybody can sound pretty good in a studio. Auto-Tune and tone filters largely ensure that. Live singing is the only worthwhile test, IMO. It’s a test that good singers can pass.

Sadly, that’s what I’m more or less expecting. But if he can actual hold up, he’s the kind of person I might like to win.

I haven’t seen all of Gangreen’s preview people, but so far my fave is Pia.

  • jammasta

No kidding, I originally wanted Jermaine in the Top 10, but he just never hit it off with his oversinging and “God everything” type.

Liking Jimmie Allen’s voice. Male R&B types are a bit odd on this show (Ruben Studdard, Nikko Smith, Chikezie, and Anoop Desai, Michael Lynche for finalists, am I missing anyone else?) Michael Lynche had a pretty good run, Ruben Studdard won, I don’t know where Nikko Smith, Anoop Desai, or Chikezie have gone). Voice is pretty smooth.

I’d put him in my faves with Scotty McCreery, Thia Megia, Jerome Bell, Janelle Arthur, and Lauren Suddeth. If Jessica Cunningham and Pia Toscano become standouts, they’ll be up there as well.

Still waiting on the oddball amazing freak like Siobhan Magnus or Adam Lambert or guitarists who bring more personality to their performances (and don’t just “hide behind their guitars”) like Crystal Bowersox or Kris Allen (or David Cook, almost forgot him). We have good country and R&B representation here which satisfies me somewhat, and 3 pretty good belters (as much as I said Pia’s overrated, there’s still something undeniably there), I just want to see some rockers in this group. Granted, I don’t think anyone could even try to fulfill my taste in Muse and amazing flashy performances that still have substance, it doesn’t seem like this show caters to that type, but hopefully there’s one who just makes you go WTF.

but hopefully there’s one who just makes you go WTF.

Dear G in Heaven, I hope so, or it might be time for me to be done with the whole franchise. :-(

I actually know jimmie personally for abt 5+ years .. and im not saying this just because he is my bestfriend .. but he is the type of guy that sounds amazing LIVE in concert .. all of his live shows are amazing , his voice is super clear , even with him running around on stage jumping up and down his voice hits every note.. he is a ver diverse singer the type of songs he sings live in concert and at shows are pop/ pop rock .. but he also can do r&b but he perfers pop/pop rock .. idk where ppl are gettin this whole r&b vibe that he gives of because i dont hear it at all ( not sayin that he cant do it bc he can ) but considering the fact that he is very diverse i think this is what idol needs.. Jimmie is the type of guy that gives powerful messages to the youth at church this is someone that our generation could and should look up too i think he will be a great role model for all age groups ..
