When Haley Reinhart talked back to the judges after they critiqued her performance of “Earth Song” last night, I figured that was her death knell-she’d be a goner for sure this week.

But after nearly 24 hours, I’m not so sure.  Mouthing off to the judges is never a good thing, even when justified. Idol viewers hate that. But my twitter feed has been overwhelmingly sympathetic to Haley, as has any number of Idol alums. When ex-Idol judge, Ellen Degeneres tweeted “don’t listen to the judges”, that got me thinking that the casual viewer may actually be as pissed off with the judges as many of the Idol faithful.

I don’t think Haley is going home tonight.  I think Lauren Alaina will be heading out the door instead.

And I say that, because Lauren had performances that weren’t terrible, but not exactly barn burning either.  Scotty McCreery is untouchable this week, not only because he hit that momandapple pie sweet spot with his Allen Jackson cover, but he is, at this point, generally untouchable.

James Durbin wasn’t as good as the judges said he was, but he was pimped pretty hard and his high-energy performance of “Love Potion #9″ that closed the show was entertaining enough to get viewers to pick up the phone.

I think Lauren is destined to fall through the cracks this week.  What do you think? Who is going home on American Idol tonight? Take the poll below!

Ryan Seacrest tweeted today, “Tonight will be a VERY interesting #americanidol. Good luck @LAlainaAI10, @JDurbinAI10, @SMcCreeryAI10 & @HReinhartAI10

  • Truthiness

Well Haley or Lauren will go home.
I think James deserves to go. Won’t happen though. F2 for him!

  • idolfan92

I hope it’s Lauren. I think she’s in danger of having been a big “forgotten” last night, with all the news (good and bad) surrounding Haley. I know I for one was inspired to vote for Haley last night. Ryan tweeted that tonight will be VERY interesting, so either Haley’s not going home or he just wants to create some buzz.

I also think there’s a (small, but still present) possibility of a James shock boot, a la Chris Daughtry.

  • rayni

I voted for Lauren but wish it was Durbin.

    Go Haley!

  • tomr

I hope that it’s Lauren but I think it will be one of the guys.

  • windmills

I like all the t4. My Sadmeter would be lowest if James went out tonight. It’d be 2nd lowest if Scotty went out tonight (ironic because I still think he’s the finalist most likely to make an album I’d buy) because I think he’ll get signed and I don’t think he has the strongest voice out of the t4. My Sadmeter would be highest if LaurenA went out tonight.

Call me crazy but I think James might go. But if not him then Haley. I’ll probably be splitting my pool points.

  • bjames

I really, really feel like it’s James tonight. I don’t know why. I thought he and Scotty were a lock for the finale, but I don’t know. I just have this feeling.

Or maybe it’s just wishful thinking that the top 3 can actually have 2 girls.

  • kcostell

Hoping for Lauren, but thinking James.

  • AIaddict

I said James but it would not bother me to see Lauren leave. So I am hoping mj is right and Haley gets to stick around another week.

  • AddictedToMars

I think Scotty is safe 100%. I’m going to guess it will be either Haley or James. It could be Lauren but it’s possible that James got lost in the mix. He hasn’t been in the bottom 3 as far as the viewers know, he’s not performing up to the standard that he should and the overpimping him may have backfired. Plus Haley probably got sympathy votes, Scotty is Scotty and Lauren’s fanbase seemed to be more riled up than I’ve usually seen due to her B2 appearence. It’s a tough call and anybody’s guess at this point. Tonight will be interesting.

  • blissful

I want Haley to go before Lauren, only because the one going next week always gets screwed in the number of post-idol interviews. She can get some additional buzz with the judging inconsistencies.

But ideally, I like Haley to be in Top 2 with one of the boys.

  • littlefishie

I’m hoping for anyone but Haley.

  • Jon

Haley is the reason why i’m still watching Idol this season. If she goes home, it’s going to be predictable and a bore, IMO. I’m hoping it’s James so Haley can gain James’ votes. I really want to say Lauren, but i just think she pandered enough last night for votes.

I could be really excited after the results if Haley makes it into the Top 3 or really frustrated if she doesn’t.

  • nprins

    Hoping its Lauren….
but my gut is saying James….
I put 10 points on James and 5 each on Haley and Lauren

  • Duke

    Hopefully james goes home

  • Reflections On Life

I’m hoping that Scotty’s obvious attempt to become Sarah Palin’s running mate will send him home. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

If Haley wins, I hate that Lauren should be the sacrificial lamb.

But honestly, the lauren/scotty/james trifecta winning would be the 2nd year of special olympics idol, i.e. really avg singers trying to win winning over good singers. The low quality of the finalists, along with the maddening judges and the obvious production manipulation, at the same time as The Voice and XFactor are coming up, is really ill-timed, since now we’ll have alternatives to Idol.

  • askew3

I was thinking it was Haley for sure, but with Ryan tweeting “interesting”, I think it is likely not Haley. Since he didn’t say “shocking”, I think Lauren and Scotty are safe. That leaves James going home.

So, I am leaning James going home but Haley leaving wouldn’t be a surprise.

  • callmecrazy

    It’s going to be Scotty.

  • brian_ny1976

how does james “deserve” to go home? how does anyone of these kids “deserve” to go home did they emotionally destroy you? kill your cat? say something to you personally? shut it up

  • nprins

    I think
“interesting” would point more to Lauren than James….IMO he has been more of a front runner than Lauren
James would have rendered the term “shocking” …Lauren not so much

  • Pam

I kind of agree with mj’s analysis. I’m getting this deep sense from some of the discussion today that it could be James but I’m going to go with Lauren.

I can easily see the Scotty/Lauren split canceling either Scotty or Lauren out.

  • Chicagolaw

James or Scotty leaving would be “shocking,” not “interesting.” I think Lauren is leaving tonight. Haley will get one more week.

  • jpfan

Ryan doesn’t know the results. Only the producers know.

I think a girl is leaving. Most likely Lauren. If James gets the boot, it’ll be a plus for him though. OmGZ another shocking boot.

  • AddictedToMars

”Interesting” to Ryan could be mean anything and not necessarily about who’s going home. Could be a trick. Who knows? Last time Ryan’s comment stired up the show (with the shocking comment on last week’s result show) Jacob went home.

  • rayni

According to likester which tracks facebook activity to predict idol results, Lauren is going home.

    http://www.likester.com/pages/LikesterIdol.aspx

  • callmecrazy

Maybe Randy is going home? *crossing fingers*

  • jaimej40

I have this gut feeling it’s going to be James, which would be ironic given that Jennifer has wanted Haley to be like James the last two weeks.

  • smn73

When I read “interesting” I immediately thought Haley. Because I can see Ryan trying to get her to basically tell the judges to go to hell after the results. I know I would be waiting to see if she had something to say after she no longer had to worry about the competition.

  • standtotheright

how does anyone of these kids “deserve” to go home

They entered a singing contest in which the inability to attract the most votes means an elimination, and some people believe that their performances should not have attracted the most votes?

Nobody is calling for them to be stoned, here. Just removed from the competition a week earlier than the others.

  • randomjoe

Interesting could be who is in the bottom 2, it could be a Randy/Haley interaction, etc. Haley staying would be great, but who can take much more — if Randy gets to pick her song — it will be Friday and she’ll get bashed for “picking it”. Woops — sorry. I’ll stop there.

  • bjames2k5

I’ve ever only voted twice. The first time I voted 3-4 times for a person.

Last night, I voted 40 times for Haley.

Saw a comment on your blog, I think it was, from some guy like me who said he got riled up enough to vote 150 times for Haley.

It may be there’s a lot of that.

I was not upset with them criticizing her. She WAS screaming and the first song was crappy. I’m just pissed off at the complete lack of any real judgment of anyone else; not just tonight, but all season long.

Steven Tyler should not return next year. He’s a powder puff. He hasn’t said 1 negative word all season and apparently knows only one adjective: “Beautiful.”

I totally miss Simon. He’d at least have called James’ Journey crap “karaoke,” which it was.

  • Buffynut

I want it to be James but I am afraid it will be Haley. I think the “interesting” comment, by Ryan, either has to do with Gaga or perhaps an apology from Randy to Haley. I don’t think it will be a shocking boot. Unless Ryan is afraid to use the word shocking because that would be a big tipoff that it is not Haley. Interesting, to me, would be James and Scotty in bottom 2. Anything else would be expected, IMO.

  • tomr

Ryan has said that he is told the results in the morning. Interesting could also mean that they are awaiting fireworks from Haley or a flood of tears from Lauren or both if they are the bottom 2. Of course, it could be James and Lauren crying in the bottom two. Regardless, all four have had a great run!

  • AddictedToMars

When I read “interesting” I immediately thought Haley. Because I can see Ryan trying to get her to basically tell the judges to go to hell after the results. I know I would be waiting to see if she had something to say after she no longer had to worry about the competition.

You could be right but I think Ryan’s interesting tweet was to mess with fans. Interesting could be about who’s in the bottom 2. James being in the bottom 2 for the first time would be ”interesting”. I said James because I don’t think Scotty is going anywhere but back to NC for his top 3 homecoming.

  • tinawina

In my dream world, James would leave tonight insuring at least one of the girls is standing next to Scotty during his inevitable confetti shower.

    But that will not happen.

I really think Haley is really popular among idol diehards (and apparently, AI alum/Industry folks) but every place I looked that I think reflects a more general audience was much more angry at her. They thought she was a snot and bratty and can’t sing all that great anyway. There was a good amount of “how dare she” and “she should have been gone weeks ago”, I even heard my local morning show DJ ripping in to her. Her second performance got mixed reviews too. Of course she had supporters sprinkled in there but I’ve seen just as much anger.

That girl is gone tonight, I’m afraid. This just may be an Iraheta situation all over again. Good singer that viewers outside the bubble just don’t like.

I still think James could pull a last minute squeaker victory like Ruben. A lot of people like him. And people had no problem ignoring Lee’s pitch issues because the judges told them too. If James makes it to the finals I still think he can win.

I will concede that tonight is the only night that James has a chance of leaving, if its going to happen before the F2.

  • jobbix

DialIdol has rendered the verdict. It is never wrong at this stage of the game.

I havn’t seen someone talking back to the judges like that since I don’t know when. They are really spoiled by the judges this year.

  • callmecrazy

Could be that Scotty who Ryan said last week had never been in the bottom 2 is NOW in the bottom 2.

LOL – that is probably what WOULD happen. Actually, the Glee cast did a version of Friday in this week’s episode that didn’t make me want to vomit. :)

  • Lisa

Ryan doesn’t know the results. Only the producers know.

Ryan does know the results he mentioned it one time. Although I don’t think he knows them this early, I think he said at the time he knows them right before the show.

No clue who will go home. I only hope America got pissed off enough to vote till their fingers bled for Haley.

I agree with MJ, Scotty is untouchable, was from day one. ugh

I hope it is a toss up between Screeching James & Lackluster Lauren. Send em both home! LOL….sorry

  • Niall

I went all in for Lauren with my pool pick tonight. I think she and Scotty might split the “country music” vote just enough for Haley to slip through.

My impression of last night is Haley would have taken the criticism just fine if the nitpicking of some very good performances hadn’t been going on ad nauseum for weeks. She lost her cool after an admittedly less than stellar performance, which was bad timing but somewhat understandable when her critiques for good performances are stacked up against critiques James or Scotty get for mediocre performances.

  • iggy

I’m hoping that Scotty’s obvious attempt to become Sarah Palin’s running mate will send him home. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

I doubt Scotty is running as a political candidate. Didn’t you hear his song last night? He isn’t a political man.

If Scotty makes top 3 I think it will be Randy choosing his song. He seems to know more about country songs than the other 2.

  • dante

I have a sinking feeling it will be James. He is the most entertaining one IMO and my favorite and I think the final 3-2 will be boring without him.
Even though she isn’t my cuppa I really admired Haley until last night with her talking back and complaining after the show. Fair or not it is much more admirable to keep quiet (see Jason Castro or Taylor Hicks for starters. Idol doesn’t play fair).
I can’t imagine her winning after her outbursts.

I think Scotty has had this in the bag since the first week. His facial expressions bother me and I don’t think he is ALL that great, but he will make a good winner IMO.

Lauren has the best voice IMO but just hasn’t gotten the maturity to pull this off. I think she has the best chance of “making it” in the real world but I really don’t see any of these 4 doing that well.

I am not that invested in any of them. I have even gone back and watched youtubes of the David’s and Adam and the group numbers from Season 8. There are some standout performances we just haven’t had this year. I really dislike the lack of critiques from the judges (not counting Haley lol).

I have no idea who TPTB want to win this. I don’t think it is James although I do think they wanted him to be final 2. I do think Lauren was TCO but not sure now.

I still enjoy watching and it is definately more fun to try to figure out the manipulation when I am not invested.

Sorry this is so long – in conclusion I think James will be “shock boot” or it will be Lauren. Should be Haley IMO.

  • jpfan

Mmm, that Facebook info is interesting. Maybe, I’ll put all my points on Lauren to leave instead of doing a 50/50 split with Haley. It would be more interesting if James left. But I can’t see Lauren making it past him.

Scotty is so winning this thing though. Everyone else is playing for second.

  • lucy

Unless Ryan is afraid to use the word shocking because that would be a big tipoff that it is not Haley.

Of course, last week he used “shocking” for the least shocking boot *ever* perhaps, in Jacob. …. Ryan’s adjectives are suspect.

If you get this far, you’ll still get most of what the industry is likely to give you anyway, it seems. And if you go out fourth, you tend to get media opportunities that the third-place finisher misses out on because of the finale rampup. … So I don’t know that leaving tonight would kill any of them.

Honestly, I think any of these four would be an equally worthy winner, and, in the context of the 10 years of the show, none of them will be a particularly worthy winner.

I think Haley will go, because I think the general audience tends to believe the judges. The only one I’m sure won’t go is Scotty.

  • PamReid

I better change my points now because I put them all on Haley. MJ, your comment last night about Scotty taking a poo on stage and being safe was hysterical. I watched the show with my daughter and son-in-law last night at their house and she said EXACTLY the same thing. Great minds and all that. :)

  • HermeticallySealed

I’m hoping it’s Lauren. She has just never done anything that has stood out. Neither really has Scotty (Nuts of Wonder aside), but he’s pandered pretty hard to the core demo that he’ll survive.

Personally, the constant whining has me so over Haley at this point. Her phrasing has always been pretty awkward, and growling through songs like Casey isn’t better simply because she is a girl. However, she’s at least interesting when she performs, so for that reason alone, I’d rather she stay.

  • njcafe

maskedscheduler, the spoiler guy, tweeted this results show is the one to watch. Who knows?

  • sr4mjc

I split my votes. 9 for Lauren with the bonus Female 2 points and 11 for James. So 11 either way, not that it matters. And +3 if Haley is safe.

Who I think should go home despite overpraise every week? James. Who I think will go home. I think Lauren, seems like a lot of people were fighting for Haley this week.

  • doggiedr

Ryan has said, in the past, he gets the results in the morning.

Ryan has said in the past that he gets the envelope containing the results ahead of time but that he doesn’t always look.
And he could just be tweeting to drum up interest without meaning anything specific.

  • joeyd3164

    I don’t think it’ll be James.
    I don’t think it’ll be Scotty.

I think it’s one of the girls .. You could go either way .. we don’t know how the public will truly react to Haley’s sassiness if that’s what you want to call it .. but Lauren is pretty boring and wasn’t spectacular. After also seeing her break down last week after being in the bottom 2 .. I don’t know. I don’t expect a major surprise .. either Haley or Lauren. I think one of the boys will go next week and it will be a boy/girl final.

  • jpfan

I know Scotty has his “core demo” but the Z100 djs love him so he’s got a broader appeal than people think.

  • http://emuisemo.pbworks.com eilonwy

maskedscheduler, the spoiler guy, tweeted this results show is the one to watch. Who knows?

Isn’t tonight when Steve Tyler’s solo video is scheduled to debut? And a Lady Gaga manifestation of some sort?

There’s a good deal going on that the show would consider interesting, aside from the results — the more so because Interscope seems to be working on the theory that it’s never possible to be over-saturated with Gaga.

  • callmecrazy

    Ryan is one big tease.

  • CCOREY2034

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if James Durbin was voted off. It could Lauren, Haley or James. The only safe is Scotty, IMO if Scotty let it would be a bigger shock then Pia being voted off. I hope it isn’t Haley because IMO the girl is a total gem. Shes not cookie cutter as Adam L said or predictable. I thought James IMO was the worst last night. His Journey song was kind of like one of those performances were everyone is drunk at the bar and someone goes and does karaoke and we all think its fun because we are hammered lol. Honestly I think next season we are going to have a different panel of judges. I think Steven Tyler will remain but I have a feeling Jennifer Lopez will exit after one season. They might decide to replace Randy next year. IMO replacing the judges wont see as bad because they have already done it.

  • ScorpioBSB

Last night was the first time I’ve voted since Season 8 and I put in AT LEAST 150 votes for Haley. I’ve heard many, many other such stories.

James is just slightly above average talent-wise (JMHO) and I’m outraged that they put him up on a pedestal week after week, with NO constructive criticism whatsoever when many of his performances have screamed for it.

I’ve been watching the show week after week now with what feels like a permanent look of utter disbelief on my face as performance after performance of mediocrity goes unchallenged by the judges. I wouldn’t be watching at all if my daughter wasn’t interested, and will not watch again after this season. I was so hopeful for this renaissance of Idol…..

I hope enough of us voted for Haley to make a difference. She’s the best voice on the show, and hers is the ONLY voice criticized.

  • smn73

I really think Haley is really popular among idol diehards (and apparently, AI alum/Industry folks) but every place I looked that I think reflects a more general audience was much more angry at her. They thought she was a snot and bratty and can’t sing all that great anyway.

    This.

  • Nostradamas

OK, so I’m taking another tact at wishing McCreepy were no longer on my TV….

I now WANT him to win so that he can make Lee whatshisname’s (of last season) CD sales look like Michael Jackson’s in comparison…..and hopefully either put the final fork in the horrible mess AI has become or cause them to totally revamp this trainwreck to try to save it.

His first song was pathetic enough, but the last song last night was so gawdamned awful I nearly shot the TV…hell, even Branson or Dollywoord doesn’t like that pathetic shit….

  • AddictedToMars

maskedscheduler, the spoiler guy, tweeted this results show is the one to watch. Who knows?

Well if that’s the case that might be the answer to the ”interesting” tweet. Like I said it could be about anything. Could be about one of the guest performances? Could be about the results or who’s in the bottom 2?

  • Lisa

I watched Haley’s performance again and this time listened to all the judges comments. I don’t think Haley is going home tonight.

I think it will be between Lauren or James.

  • jpfan

No way in hell Scotty’s sales will make Lee’s look good. He’ll be the first male Idol country winner ever and should get A+ songwriters. I’m not saying he’ll be a superstar winner. But then none of them will be.

  • callmecrazy

His first song was pathetic enough, but the last song last night was so gawdamned awful I nearly shot the TV…hell, even Branson or Dollywoord doesn’t like that pathetic shit….

    *ha* so true Nostradamas

  • panz

Well, I hope it’s not Haley. She’s the only interesting person left on this show. If she goes tonight, I’ll tune in for the finale but that’s it. Once she’s gone, I don’t care who else wins. Way too bored with the others.

I’d be shocked if anyone else left tonight. It seems scripted that she’s going.

ScorpioBSB, I, too, feel like the judges are watching some other show. It seems so scripted and pre-ordained this year. Scotty could come out, smile at the camera for two minutes, and get rave reviews.

  • jaimej40

I knew a lot of folks power voting for Haley last night. We also live in the south and did not vote for Scotty. Interesting would be James and Haley in the bottom 2 and James going home. This is because JLo and Randy keep wanting to crown James and to get Haley to follow. How ironic would it be to see them standing side by side and Haley survive? I can’t think of anything that would make my night better.

  • JAG

I think James will leave tonight.I haven’t voted at all this season, that is until last night . Voted my fingers off for Haley ! Aside from Steven the judges threw her under the bus and backed up over her ! It just may have worked in her favor,we’ll see tonight !

  • Ringo

I guess I would not be surprised if Haley went home given the judges on the bus saying “leave, leave, leave.” But I think the show will be the lesser for it. It will be Hee Haw mets Karaoke Night if its S, J & L. And I will dearly miss Haley. Her look alone at the end of I Who Have Nothing, particularly her snarling mouth haunts me this morning. Love me some Haley!! If she does make it in, what would Randy pick as one of her songs next week? Any other classic Journey songs? How about a complete effing by picking a rap song, dawg?

  • musicality

And a Lady Gaga manifestation of some sort?

Yes, of course. I could just see Ryan calling Lady GaGa interesting in his quasi sarcastic way. If she’s doing her usual over the top performance then I can see him looking all dead panned into the camera and saying interesting. Does Ryan get excited about anything? He always seems so rigid.

  • Kirsten

Top 4 is always a tough call. Daughtry got sent home after hitting the bottom 3 on Top 7 night and then having a rather meh night. Elliott tore the house down, Taylor was unstoppable and Kat had a disaster (IIRC she also sang last). So Elliott got the casual vote added to his rabid fan base, Taylor’s rabid fan base was in constant panic mode (they knew the show hated him – if you think what Randy says to Haley is bad, try remembering what Simon used to say to him), and Kat got the panic and sympathy vote.

Most years though, the person running on fumes went home (e.g. Anthony, Lakisha, Mike and, yes, Jason (who checked out that week)). Allison had a good night, Adam had the best of the night (and his voters were frightened out of splitting votes the week before), Kris got the sympathy vote for the pile on and Gokey got the panic vote for the scream.

Nobody had an Elliott top 4 night last night. Scotty has a Taylor-sized fan base. Lauren has some bottom 2 bounce going for her (but she is vote splitting). Haley probably got the sympathy vote. James going last and getting praised probably earned him some casual votes.

IDK. I can see an argument for almost anybody going home. One thing I saw last night is a lot of Haley fans giving up. That sometimes spells doom. But then, far more were power voting like fiends. We’ll see how powerful vocal power voters are tonight (and it was interesting to see that woman can attract them despite such claims to the contrary).

I think it is between James and Haley. James has had the last spot so many times and been praised as the best ever that it may be his equivalent of “meh”. Sure, the judges are always trying to make it that this week was his bestest bestest bestest best compared to last week’s mere bestest bestest best, but people start losing track of all those bestests after a while.

My pool points are on Haley, but I’m leaning towards James now. Hmm…Unjust criticism seems to really motivate people at this point (if only she hadn’t have talked back, she would have sailed into the top 3).

  • Aryanna

I really don’t want Lauren to go home let her stay at least another week i want her to have that concert for disaster victims. I don’t know who will go home it will be a close one but i do think Scotty is safe no doubt he makes all the young girls swoon but Lauren is also a role model to young girls so idk it could be any of the 3 Lauren, James and Haley. This is a tough one but whoever does go will have a great career ahead of them.

  • Coldbluesteel

Please God let it be Haley. I am completely sick of this tired poor little Haley meme

  • creni

Haely’s reaction was normal. She knew in that instant that Randy wanted her out of the competition. I’m sure it pained her. Haven’t we all at one time or another, done our absolute best… but they have their little favorites, so it doesn’t matter what we do, its over. And sure she makes some mistakes, but when she nails it.. it is amazing. One concern I have is last week when Lauren was in the bottom 2. She was crying like a baby, Ryan had to help her keep it together. Her concern was only for herself. She is not quite ready for this. They are making her up to be older, but she is young and needs a little more time.

  • Trina

I’m already prepared for James to leave so I’m not even bothering to watch. They went out of their way to create a backlash against him and I’m pissed. I’ll root and vote for Scotty from now on.

  • SouthernKradamFan

I voted casually a couple of times earlier in the season for Casey, Haley, and James, but I voted about 200+ times (text and phone combined) for Haley. Does anyone think she may get votes from Casey and Jacob fans? I don’t think she is going to win, but I really want her to make it to the Top 3. I kind of think a Lauren/Haley finale would be cool, but that’s not happening until pigs fly and hell freezes over so…

I can’t shake the feeling that Haley is going home even though I want her to stay. :(

  • sr4mjc

Maybe Jordin is wearing her bikini tonight.

  • Nuts 0f Wonder

So they have a top 11 on tour… why not go with, people were confused with the different order of performances last night, and the contenstant’s numbers so in all fairness we are sending all four of you back for a home town visit and eliminate two people next week? that would be interesting…. and something different

Or James can go…. still want two girls and my Nuts of Wonder in the top 3

  • Nostradamas
  • smn73

I now WANT him to win so that he can make Lee whatshisname’s (of last season) CD sales look like Michael Jackson’s in comparison

I don’t see this happening. I live in Nashville. He has a HUGE fanbase here. People are loving his throwback style. And while it’s not my cup of tea, I predict he will have huge sales.

  • johanna

I have a feeling that bottom 2 will be Haley and James and James will be leaving too. Scotty is safe no matter what. Lauren probably got the votes for the disaster area. Haley got the votes from upset viewers for the judges bashing and James will have fallen in the cracks.

Anyway nothing to be ashamed of for anyone leaving at Top 4, just too bad missing the homecoming.

  • Pam

Ryan has mentioned in the past that he has gone in as early as noon pacific time when he really wants to know. I heard him mention the day those who were present when the votes came in when Chris went home. He talked like they were all quite upset and that was of course before the results show even aired.

I’m all for sending Randy home. heh

  • AddictedToMars

Does anyone think she may get votes from Casey and Jacob fans?

This Casey fan is voting for Lauren.

    Me too!! :)

I still thinking that Haley is the one in danger :( she or James , and is sad because they’re the two taking risk all the season long :/

  • Kirsten

Okay. I have made up my mind.

I’m putting all my points on Haley to go home.

    Here is my logic:

If she does not go home, I’ll be so happy that my favourite girl and guy contestants since the semi-finals are still in it, I won’t care that I’m digging a cellar in the pool standings. (I’m assuming here that Scotty is safe).

If she does go home, I can nurse my wounds by at least getting a bunch of pool points.

  • SouthernKradamFan

Also, do you think the fact that Haley’s Youtube video performances have some of the highest number of views of ANY of them matters at all? Her IWHN already has 36,000 views compared to Scotty’s 3,350 (Where Were You), James’ 25,000 for DTB, and Lauren’s 22,500 for Anyway?

She has 806,900 views of Rolling in the Deep!

  • colette

I haven’t called it right in the last few weeks, so take this as a grain of salt: I say it’s James.

I hope it’s James out the door. That way Scotty and Lauren can split the country fandom, and Haley has a chance.

But really, each of these kids will probably get some kind of musical future (duration of which is another matter). Maybe Queen will invite James to be their lead singer, since Adam didn’t bite. Scotty can just march right on the CMA Awards and into the iPods of people who just love that Jesus-and-apple-pie stuff and for whom a deep, freak of nature voice is hook enough.

Alaina has Disney Channel written all over her.

The one who would have the more interesting and unpredictable career is Haley — which is one of the reasons she’s really grown on me.

And Lady Gaga, maybe you’d consider coming in as a giant bat and pecking the hell out of the Most Beautiful Woman in the World’s perfectly coiffed hair, and leaving droppings on Randy’s glasses. You could also commune with the undead, ie Mr. Tyler. That would really make my night….

  • Miss Blue

If she does make it in, what would Randy pick as one of her songs next week?

Against All Odds. Bank on it. He’ll do his damnedest to sabotage her.

  • Chicagolaw

James isn’t going anywhere. The judges have practically crowned him the winner, so his leaving would be a major shock. And, after his home visit, with the tears and supporters and 2 yr. old son, he will take the whole thing.

    Lauren is leaving.

And just watch, Haley’s Homecoming will be pitiful compared to the other two. Chicago is NOT a big Idol-loving place, lol. And she doesn’t have the tearful backstory or the young Bieber thing.

  • jersey

Kirsten, my reasoning exactly! Except of course for the whole fav guy contestant still being in it; he’s long gone!

  • Pam

Top 4 is always a tough call. Daughtry got sent home after hitting the bottom 3 on Top 7 night and then having a rather meh night. Elliott tore the house down, Taylor was unstoppable and Kat had a disaster (IIRC she also sang last). So Elliott got the casual vote added to his rabid fan base, Taylor’s rabid fan base was in constant panic mode (they knew the show hated him – if you think what Randy says to Haley is bad, try remembering what Simon used to say to him), and Kat got the panic and sympathy vote.

It seems so ironic in a way that Lauren performed “Trouble” this week since that was the song that Elliott performed that night. I think they had 2 songs as well and of course that was Elvis week. I think his first song was “If I Can Dream” and then followed by “Trouble” later in the show. I think if Elliott hadn’t have had that magnificent 2nd performance, he probably would have hit B2. Since Chris did have a prior trip to the B3 I shouldn’t have been so surprised at the result, but I have to admit I was.

  • littlefishie

Against All Odds. Bank on it. He’ll do his damnedest to sabotage her.

You know… I think Haley could actually pull that song off, especially if she’s pissed at Randy to begin with. ;)

  • standtotheright

She has 806,900 views of Rolling in the Deep!

“Related” videos of popular songs can get a lot of hits on Youtube, so that may speak to RITD as much as her performance. I think there’s something to be said for her IWHN having more hits than the others, but 11,000 more views isn’t probative on a night with 70 million votes.

For the record, I’d prefer she that she stay in it. But I honestly don’t know.

  • callmecrazy

I think Gaga is the one female Steven would never try to make out with. Wonder if he would say to her after her performance…’That was beautiful!’

  • IdolThoughts

I think James will go home. Or Hailey. I don’t think Lauren will go home. But, then again…I voted for her and I like her more than either of those two. Hailey’s stank attitude and James’ crying both put me over the edge.

  • wolfsbane813

don’t renew his contract and fire randy next year.
do we know if jlo and steven are locked in for next year?

the show really needs to get back to real judging. none of this nonsense going on this year. i’d like to see shania on the panel. i really loved when she guest judged.

but to stay on topic, i will honestly be surprised to see durbin not be sent home. i don’t think he did anything that would fire up his fan base and have them vote passionately to keep him around.

  • Kirsten

If she does make it in, what would Randy pick as one of her songs next week?

Interesting question. I think that if they survive, here is who would pick for each:

James – Steven – both rock dudes and I think the PTB want to give the new judges the picks for people who will likely make it to the finale. If Lauren makes it, though, James might get Randy
Scotty – JLo – she loves him and can get away with picking something a tiny bit out of his wheelhouse for him
Lauren – Steven – he has called her the one since the beginning

By process of the elimination, then yes. It is likely Randy will pick for Haley (I don’t see why he would be asked to pick for the other two, though possibly JLo would pick for Haley if she was the last girl standing. I just don’t think that Steven would pick for her since he has two other contestants that would make more sense).

Oh my gosh! I was just coming over here to ask the same question. I just watched Haley’s performances from the last 4 weeks and could not believe the number of views on them. Actually, Rolling in the Deep has over a million views if you add all the posted videos together. That 800K figure is just for one person’s video.
So, out of curiosity, I started checking the other 3 contestants and they are not even close. James, Judas Priest and audition have over 200,000 views but his recent ones are way lower. Same is true with Lauren and Scotty. Interesting! If Jimmy monitors stuff like this (and I’m sure he does) this coupled with her i-Tunes sales may be why he has suddenly jumped on the Haley bandwagon?

  • wolfsbane813

I voted Scotty to go — but it’s pure wishful thinking on my part. The boy bores me to death.

  • lucy95

Boy, the judges and producers have really messed with this season and the contestants are the ones who suffer. I’d love to see Haley stay because I find her the most interesting and love her voice. If not, maybe for the best as she seems to be fed up with all the obvious manipulation. Wonder how they’ll do when the show is over and they’re not getting positive “critiques” every week. Good luck to all of them.

  • _Sereena_

Just a reminder for those who are looking at the DialIdol stats. If you check the “raw numbers” graph, it’s very different from the “score” graph. “Raw numbers” has Haley on top, followed by James, with Lauren and Scotty having the lowest scores.

I hope Lauren leaves. She’s still doing a benefit concert the weekend of the home visits, so she can take consolation in that.

Scotty will never leave. We said that about Jacob, but he finally left…

    I’d love to see a Haley/James finale.

That only tells us that DialIdol voters favour Haley. The DialIdol score uses busy signals to try to measure general public reaction. If you are going to use any raw number, look at the percentage of busy signals. That tells you how hard the general voters are hitting the lines.

DialIdol score also does some modelling to try to remove various other biases, so it’s not pure busy signals.

Does anyone think she may get votes from Casey and Jacob fans? I don’t think she is going to win, but I really want her to make it to the Top 3

I was just wondering that. As I often look at who went the week before or even 2 weeks before and I know last week Casey was tweeting for his fans to vote for Haley. I am thinking she will get some of Jacob’s votes but then again, hard to tell as perhaps some of his fans like someone else. I have been a Jacob/Haley/Naima fan this season ( but not really a fan of any of them this season like in Season 3,4, 8)..but I am now voting for Haley.

  • Chicagolaw

OK, I’ve decided. It will be Lauren and Scotty (the two country kids) in the bottom two with Lauren leaving.

James’ home coming is even iffier. Santa Cruz, CA is largely a college town (UC Santa Cruz is the most gorgeous campus you can imagine — I got 2 kids going there and resent the hell out of sending them to this virtual paradise). Not sure any of those students are gonna give a crap about it. Further, CA tends not to go crazy over Idol like the south or even the mid-West. Kate McPhee’s homecoming in Los Angeles was the worst.

  • callmecrazy

I live an hour away from Santa Cruz and yes, the campus is quite beautiful.

    That was depressing.

  • Chicagolaw

James doesn’t even need a big turnout. He will get miles out of his backstory and his cute little boy. That will be more than enough.

  • MayMirabella

If Gaga either performed last night after the show and it was taped or was rehearsing for tonight; that could explain Ryan saying tonight would be interesting. Between Lady Gaga and Steven’s video, that does spell interesting and different, and unique right there. Just Lady Gaga performing anywhere tends to get this reaction from any host of any show. So I am not banking on there being a surprise boot tonight although I wish there was. I want Haley to stay but I am afraid to get my hopes up only to end up disappointed. It is just that I want the top 3 to not be 2 country and one rock..with Haley you get one who is jazz/pop and one rocker and one country. ..Scotty is not going anywhere so for me, I am ok with Lauren going if it means her over Haley..but I wish both girls could stay.

  • wolfsbane813

Not sure any of those students are gonna give a crap about it.

i don’t know about the the UC system, but I know the CSU system is will be in finals during the homecoming so they aren’t going to care about that either.

Gorgeous wonderful place, one of my close friends lived there for a few years before moving to New Zealand to be with her fiancee. It is one of the best places to live and go to college as far as a lowkey, tolerant, artsy place in a beautiful setting with a nice climate.

Wheeling, IL has a parade planned for Haley (starts at Dundee and Northgate and ends at the Wheeling village hall, if you’re interested). She’ll also be singing at Arlington Park, as Lee did last year. This is on Saturday. It’s supposed to be cold and rainy here that day.

  • MayMirabella

Adam had a good homecoming in San Diego at his old high school and around the city..huge turnout according to fans who were there and talked about it..so I guess it depends on the city in CA and the contestant too.

Smaller towns and suburbs are ideal as it is the big event in the town and people come out to see the hometown star. Bigger cities are a disadvantage ,I think, especially in cities where there a lot of stars like say NYC, or LA or even Las Vegas.

  • brian_ny1976

sorry to say its going to be James and Lauren in the finale…the winner being Lauren…it only seems right…the young emotional freak vs the tourettes emotional freak…so whatever is the finale song they will be crying to much to sing it…so therefore like no boundaries..it will get lost

I don’t think that’s what happened. I think that was a question that got thrown to the group and when that happens not everybody answers the question. It’s happened at every media availability for the finalists.

Besides that MJ had posted this article from a few days ago about the plans for Haley’s homecoming.

  • callmecrazy

Not sure about the people who live in Santa Cruz but I do know that the cities nearby, mine included have people buzzing about heading to Santa Cruz for the possible homecoming of James. He has a whole lot of fans around here….

  • MayMirabella

I guess with only 4 left, a surprise or shocker would be either James or Scotty in the bottom 2 along with the girl who will leave. As I do think a girl is going tonight based on Idol voting patterns of the base. I tend to think James and Scotty have the big enthusiastic fanbases power voting for them each week.

James and Scotty have never beein in B2 so I guess it would be something new if one of them joins one of the girls in the B2.
The tossup will be if both girls end up in B2 as who knows.
I tend to think if a guy and girl are in B2, girls goes home this week.

  • keware

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a shock boot tonight with Scotty. Too many people assuming he’s safe and I think his fans might have been a little lazy last night.

I think there is no stopping the Scotty train. I think he has the most avid, devoted fans who will power vote for him and he has yet to even touch the bottom 3. I am thinking he is the top vote getter most weeks, I do believe that. And I am not a Scotty fan at all but the biggest shock of the season will be Scotty not in the Finale and not winning. It seems on all the forums, there are a ton of Scotty fans and even some who do not like country but love Scotty.

  • MayMirabella

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a shock boot tonight with Scotty. Too many people assuming he’s safe and I think his fans might have been a little lazy last night.

That would be more than a shocker, that would be a super shocker. I have this feeling he is getting the votes like Carrie did in Season 4 and he is a runaway train and there is no stopping him. He seems to have fans of all ages. I am not one but his followers on Twitter and judging from forums and casual viewers comments..wow, I think he has a massive and dedicated fan base who vote only for him and a lot.

  • jlc

Maybe the “interesting” thing Ryan speaks of will be a ‘magical’ 2nd judges save, appearing from nowhere (Nigel’s evil mind), and handed to Wittle Wauren who just is too cute to be booted cuz she weawy, weawy wants a homecoming and gosh darn it, doesn’t she deserve it?

I really, really want it to be Lauren that goes home. Nothing against her, I just don’t think she’s brought a single interesting or notable thing to the competition. I think i’m convincing myself it will be her just because I want it to be.

It I were to chose my preference + what I think could happen, I’d like:
    4 – Lauren
3 – James (love him, but 3 is a good spot)
    2 – Haley
    1 – Scotty (I don’t think he’s going down, no matter what)

  • AddictedToMars

IMO Scotty is Carrie Underwood/Taylor Hicks all rolled into one when it comes to the voting. He is obviously going to win.

I hope Haley lasts at least 1 more week. Scotty, Lauren, and James would be the most boring final 3 ever, so girl needs to hang another week.

In the long run, what I would love to see is the Casey Abrams Band featuring Haley Reinhart. They could do great touring jazz clubs in the US, Europe, and Japan.

Nina1: I think Haley will go home, but the night will be interesting because JLo and Randy will issue her a formal apology. (A girl can dream.)

I agree they’re going to address the judging of Haley issue because of the mutiny by Haley/LaurenA plus all the media coverage. The problem is they will revise history and not deal with the real issue which IMO is that Haley’s gotten such inconsistent judging and she’s basically been treated as the producer’s vehicle for drama. They won’t address that the Haley issue is a symptom for the overall problem with judging this whole season. However they address the situation I have a feeling it won’t be satisfying.

That would be just wonderful !!! But I would be shocked if that happens. Guys have done so well on this show for the past 3 seasons.

  • mytwocents

I wasn’t at all surprised with Haley’s reaction to the judges’ critique. In fact I was even more amazed it took her that long to stand up for herself. She takes on Rolling In the Deep and kill it, she gets lukewarm response. She sounded amazing on Beautiful, also to unfair reception from JLo and Randy. You and I fit her so well, it could be a single on radio, and the two bash her. I would’ve cracked after that if I were on her position. But she just took it all in.

This time, however, to a song she was so passionate about, she didn’t give a damn anymore. She felt it was unfair and sometimes you have to stand up for yourself especially when there’s no one there to back you up. To me, it proved she was serious with what she was doing, and that she was defending herself as an artist.

I have this horrible feeling the judges want her out coz she’s the biggest threat to the trio they’ve invested so much money on from the very beginning (Scotty, James and Lauren). I pray she’s safe. – MYK

Prediction: they will address the Haley issue by saying they were just trying to make her better because they know she has so much more in her, and look what that criticism pulled out of her! Etc.

And if she’s voted out they will be GOBSMACKED and blame the voters. “She was the best voice in the competition!” etc

(And, honestly, they won’t be wrong. If Haley is voted out it will be the voting public’s fault. Because without a big sob story or grandma appeal angle or built in fan base they really DID find a way to drum up a huge amount of attention for her, advertent or not. It’ll just suck to see their hypocrisy.)

  • iggy

The theme was songs that inspire the idols. If that song inspired Haley, they shouldn’t have criticized it. She did scream too much for my taste, however, her song choice was hers. I can’t criticize that. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

I think Haley has done well to pull herself up from the stools of shame. I actually prefer her to Lauren and hope she stays another week.

  • jericho

It didn’t sound to me like she was calling James a freak because of his disability but because he is an overly emotional basketcase.

James is emotional because of his disability.

Nah…I know a couple guys who are emotional freaks who do not have a disability and I know someone with Aspergers who doesn’t act like James at all. I think what we are witnessing is his personality. I’m not making a judgement whether that’s good or bad I’m just saying I don’t think it’s related to his disabilities.

  • Trina

If its both guys in the bottom whoever stays is going to get a shitload of votes from a nervous fanbase and that would guarantee one of them will sail into the finale so its really not the best outcome for those “girl power” fans.

    James (bye bye)

  • Tess

I have this horrible feeling the judges want her out coz she’s the biggest threat to the trio they’ve invested so much money on from the very beginning (Scotty, James and Lauren).

This has me a little confused….what money has been spent on Scotty, James, and Lauren that is in excess of what has been spent on Haley?

And, just for the record, there are probably quite a few viewers of Idol who don’t like Haley’s way of singing and don’t think she has that good of a voice. In my opinion she butchered the MJ song last night and just showed that her ego is way bigger than her actual talent level. It’s one thing to be flat on a few notes but to sing a song so completely out of her range and vocal styling is hubris at it’s best.

  • http://jasonlscott.com jlscott13

I hope the “interesting” is that Haley is staying despite the rough bussing and then jlo and Randy will have to comment on one of their fav departure… *hoping*
..on a 2nd tought, even more interesting would be to have Haley in the top 2. I would enjoy this like a 7 dishes gastronomic dinner

It is clear no one wants Haley around (judges/producers) so I would LOVE for Haley to end up in the finale. That’d stick it to the man. haha

  • alison8701

James should go! He’s had SO MANY egregious pitch problems– like entire songs being flat or off-key. None of the other three have had that– in fact, none of them have had real significant pitch problems. The other three are really effortless and natural singers.

There’s no denying they’ve all got great voices, but honestly, James is the worst at control. His lower register is constantly unsupported and whispery and flat. And his higher notes tend to be nasally. Lauren sings so well and with such ease. She has a natural grit to her voice and hits high notes effortlessly. Scotty can sing in both that low register and higher one. And Haley can just do all sorts of things with her voice. And do them well.

James is the only one who has given a painful performance. In fact, he’s given MULTIPLE painful performances.

I just wish he would leeeeeeeave already.

  • Valentin432

Ryan’s tweet alone is an indication that Haley just might be sticking around. Why would they say anything if it was Haley going home?

Saying that the result show is going to be very interesting = please tune in at 8 PM.

It couldn’t be a more neutral word.

They didn’t even tweet when Pia was eliminated and last week, Seacrest used the “surprising” word when Jacob who most people had going home was eliminated.

  • wolfsbane813

    Bottom 2:

    Haley
    James (bye bye)

im down on me knees praying at the top of my lungs. i want haley in the top 3, but not at the expense of lauren!!

Seacrest used the “surprising” word when Jacob who most people had going home was eliminated.

yeah but lauren was in the bottom two and that was surprising.

  • JudyL

I’m wondering how the final two will impact ticket sales for the tour. If the final two are Scotty and Lauren, that’s a large portion of the tour being devoted to them and personally, I just don’t think it would be a fun, dynamic ending to a concert. And while they both apparently have fan bases that are voting, I don’t see much praise for either from the entertainment industry.

As for a successful recording career from anyone this season, I would be surprised.

I did like the upthread suggestion of Haley touring with Casey in a jazz setting.

  • jpfan

What is an emotional freak anyway? Somebody that cries and shows alot of emotions. I always thought an emotional freak was the opposite. Someone who shows no emotions at all. Anyway freak is a pretty loaded term directed at anyone on a kareoke show.

  • http://jasonlscott.com jlscott13

This has me a little confused….what money has been spent on Scotty, James, and Lauren that is in excess of what has been spent on Haley?

And, just for the record, there are probably quite a few viewers of Idol who don’t like Haley’s way of singing and don’t think she has that good of a voice. Well, you should direct that at James. His ego is ridiculous at this point…mostly, because no one has ever said a negative thing to him. Haley is fighting for her life, and her performance was “emotionally perfect,” to quote the judges on a James’ performance.

  • littlefishie

Prediction: they will address the Haley issue by saying they were just trying to make her better because they know she has so much more in her, and look what that criticism pulled out of her! Etc.

ITA. Regardless, I’m done with Randy and JLo.

  • Desdemona

Who I want to go home and who I have a sick feeling that is going home are two different people. I WANT Haley to finally go home, but I feel like James will. I don’t want to be right.

This James fan might still vote if he’s gone tonight, but it will be for anyone but Haley.

  • CindyM

Is there praise for any of them from the entertainment industry?? James gets a lot of criticism in articles about Idol for his inability to hit notes, don’t see much at all for the others except the occasional “kareoke”, “soundalike” comments.

  • chrislongisland

I am going out tonight to avoid having to watch because I think Haley is going home. If she stays, I’ll be so happy and it will make for an awesome surprise when I read the result at 9 pm.

  • miniglik

I cry at the drop of a hat and am a happy and emotionally healthy person. I happen to find tears theraputic. People need to get over their discomfort with displays of emotion.

    Freaks. ;)

  • ReginaFilange

I want Haley in the top 3 more than anyone, but I agree her homecoming would be awful. I live right in the area and I bet even Idol watchers would be surprised to find out Haley lives here. Whether it’s because they never really look into Haley’s backstory or Wheeling is just not interesting enough to bring up, she won’t get a big turnout.

Can’t remember, what was Lee Dewyze’s homecoming like? I remember he was from Mount Prospect.

  • miniglik

Well, you should direct that at James. His ego is ridiculous at this point…mostly, because no one has ever said a negative thing to him. Haley is fighting for her life, and her performance was “emotionally perfect,” to quote the judges on a James’ performance.

He seems to be performing the way he has from the beginning (except the vocal is slipping, sadly). It’s not James’ fault the judges suck.

(It’s also not Haley’s fault, and I don’t think her ego has been out of control either.)

  • panz

I’ve never understood the hate people have for Haley personally. By all accounts (friends of friends etc), she is a sweetheart. She has shown more grit, spunk, character etc than just about any Idol I can remember. In her position, I would’ve snapped back at the judges weeks ago.

otoh, to me, it seems like James and Scotty have massive egos and, as far as I’m concerned, they’ve got no basis for it.

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

Alright, here’s how I look at the elimination at this point:

    http://bit.ly/gCrWUY

This spreadsheet looks at 5 factors, especially with a TOTAL Vote = 70 Million

    1) A standard block of votes = Standard percentage of votes from the Idol’s fan base at this stage of the competition. In other words, the base for each contestant that will vote every night for that contestant, regardless of performance.

    2) top 4 bump = Increase in number of votes from the standard voting block (should parallel the Std Block). This number just reflects an energized base who steps up the number of votes from previous weeks.

    3) Gaga Fans = Lady Gaga fans who tuned in to see her and decided to vote. This will be a relatively small number.

    4) Haley Rage = Haley fans and others who voted extra hard because of the aparent inequity of the judging. This is a relatively small percentage, but significant because of such a high vote number.

    5) new = New voters who voted on song quality alone. This is a relatively small percentage, but significant again. However, it could sway the vote if the performances were significantly disparate. In last night’s performance, I think there wasn’t much of a significant difference in this vote.

Therefore, I looked at the base, and gave Scotty a significant advantage with 33% of all the ‘base’ votes. I gave Haley the lowest percentage at 17% (I believe that to be higher, but will error too low). The significant factor here will be the level of ‘Haley Rage’. I put in 5 Million of the 70 Million due to anger over the whole Haley issue. If that is the case, then Lauren is gone. At any rate, take a look at the spreadsheet. You can play with it if you wish.

  • iluvai

I think TPTB have proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that ending the tour set with the strongest, most dynamic singers is simply not a priority for them.

  • Trina

Did anyone ever think James would have appreciated some actual advice from the judges instead of them constantly telling him how great he is? In any even he and his massive ego doesn’t sound all that confident about tonight if I’m reading between the lines of his latest tweet. I’m sure if his fans realize the kind of shit he’s getting he knows too and maybe he rather leave. Why would you want to stick around when everyone wants you gone?

ETA: yes not everyone thinks Haley has such a great voice and this huge Michael Jackson fan thinks she butchered one of his songs.

  • jpfan

The Idol show Is not a real concert anyway. It’s for fans who love everyone and everything. If some fans don’t like the closing act, they can leave early. 19 won’t care as they’ll already have their $. ;)

The show is Teflon. Reviews won’t matter and no one will go who isn’t already a big fan (or forced to go.)

  • iFly55

If the judges did a 10-20s critique and made suggestions that would’ve been fine; but they droned on and on attacking her song choice, her vocal chops, finally telling her to change it up by doing runs at the end; even after all that they still weren’t done … they compared her to James’ lack lustre performance.

No … this can’t be considered your usual bad critique; Simon would’ve kept it short and sweet rather than recite a speech.

I think Idol viewers applaud Haley, and aren’t turned off whatsoever by her reaction; however, i think they were turned off by the judges comments

I honestly don’t think i can sit through the Judges critiques, they are so dull, predictable and don’t even represent what i’m thinking at home. Atleast with Simon you got a dose of truth, these guys are bashing the wrong contestants while holding hands with the American Idol Scotty McCreery

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

Normally, I’m in tune with internets and the consensus fave, but this season? The web-based tonguebath for her has made me want her to go home even more than I already did.

  • sr4mjc

Slezak just tweeted out an article the possibility of no one going home tonight. It’s not that far fetched. Even if James was going home, they don’t have to make it be known and he still gets his hometown visit complete with tears and bingo, back in it to win it! Blech. Same for Lauren and Scotty. Haley’s pathetic homecoming will be worse that Kat’s and then she’ll come back and sing Friday.

  • Keel

The judging really is bad this year (duh!) and it didn’t have to be. At the start of the live rounds, I thought the judges would play their individual roles, with Steven being kind of the Paula who would prop up the contestants, JLo who would give them some love but also some constructive critiques and then Randy, who would tell it like it is (kind of the Simon Memorial Chair). For whatever reason, however, they very abruptly abandoned that approach and each judge began fawning all over every contestant — with some exceptions. I don’t understand why that change had to happen. Now, the judges have become utterly useless and I just fast forward through their critiques. The judges IMO have become a real liability to AI this season. They suck and by the end of the season (if they keep this up), everyone will be screaming for their heads.

  • eyin

I keep comparing “The Earth Song” performance to the “Without You” performance. In context, it was the same: songs that had personal meanings to the performers. Both were not their best vocals. But my problem is that Haley put her emotions into her song too, she just wasn’t crying. If she had tears, would it also be called “emotionally perfect” even though it wasn’t her best vocals? Probably not. Because the song is about saving the planet and not missing your family. “Without You” was much more cringeworthy and a lot harder to listen to, yet not nearly called out for it the way they hammered on the other.

So yeah, I want James to go.

  • Lisa

Anyone really listen to Jlo’s comments to Lauren last night? We are just trying to help you get to the final, with you standing there and the confetti coming down, that is what we want.

That has bothered me all night

  • jpfan

Somebody better go home tonight! Plus those homecomings have become ridiculous to me. Why don’t they save the parades and big rallies for some folks who’ve actually contributed to their town/city. I mean Lee had a crowd of 20K and probably couldn’t get 200 of them to show up for a concert a mere year later. Ugh.

  • iggy

Anyone really listen to Jlo’s comments to Lauren last night? We are just trying to help you get to the final, with you standing there and the confetti coming down, that is what we want.

Well, it certainly isn’t what I want. With remarks like these, people will be sure to vote against her for the win. You can count on it.she hasn’t done anything to deserve the win.

I highly doubt we won’t see someone go home. If no one is going home, it’s almost pointless to watch the show tonight. lol

ETA: As jpfan said above, these hometown visits have already been planned and tons of money have been spent in each city planning these homecomings. We started hearing about these tentative plans what 2 weeks ago? No way that is happening.

  • SpenserJ

Did anyone ever think James would have appreciated some actual advice from the judges instead of them constantly telling him how great he is?

I completely think that James would have appreciated that. They’ve been doing him a huge disservice.

  • chicksineggz

Hey. I think, regardless of who our favorites are, we can all agree that the judges suck. Because, yes, I do think that James would have appreciated some constructive criticism. And then maybe people wouldn’t hate him so much for thinking that he has a huge ego. And then there wouldn’t so much backlash towards Haley and her fanbase either.

I have James going home tonight. Then I realized this contradicts my overall pick. So I changed it to Haley last minute. Lol. My chances in the pool are shot now. I kinda wish I had changed it to Haley when I first started rooting for her though.

If no one is going home tonight then it’ll be the worst results show this year. =P

  • SpenserJ

I mean Lee had a crowd of 20K and probably couldn’t get 200 of them to show up for a concert a mere year later. Ugh.

Well, a year later, there wasn’t a chance they were going to be on TEEVEE!!111!!!

  • halo9125

Somebody wrote this earlier- but I am increasingly convinced that all the Haley bussing is a backasswards form of pimping. “If we piss off the Haley fans enough, they’ll come out to vote in droves”. “If we say we want to see Lauren in a confetti shower, that will piss off Haley fans even more”.

I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if it is indeed Lauren that goes tonight. She did a good job on Anyway last night, but her rendition of Trouble was her essentially saying “I’m evil” an endless number of times.

  • Valentin432

Anyone really listen to Jlo’s comments to Lauren last night? We are just trying to help you get to the final, with you standing there and the confetti coming down, that is what we want.

She said that their critics, like going for it, hitting high notes, choosing more difficult songs are there for her to improve and win.

I see nothing wrong with that statement, that’s basically the judge’s job description, making critics that we’ll help the contestants improve.

  • sr4mjc

I highly doubt we won’t see someone go home. If no one is going home, it’s almost pointless to watch the show tonight. lol

Not to Jimmy, he’s got Gaga to promote! And they’d announce it at the end, lol.

Nigel would say it’s the best! Most exciting evah! Blame it a phone number mix up.

Ok, I’m just throwing things out there, but I just wouldn’t put it past Nigel at this point. It’s not likely, but.. hmmm

What would happen to the pool points?

  • JoCeeisme

Keeping my fingers crossed for James, he is the most entertaining contestant this year. I think he may go home though, he seems to be getting the back lash from the Haley bashing, people are dumping on him because the judges havn’t given him criticism (like that is his fault) and are taking their frustrations at the Haley over criticism on him! Anyway, A James/Haley final would be my wish with either winning.

  • SpenserJ

sorry to say its going to be James and Lauren in the finale…the winner being Lauren…it only seems right…the young emotional freak vs the tourettes emotional freak…

Well first, I disagree with the premise that someone Scotty isn’t winning ths thing. There is no final 2 without Scotty.

And second, neither James nor Lauren is any kind of freak. To me, they’re both very talented young people. Also, Lauren’s cried once, and James maybe a couple of times? Showing some emotions in a high pressure situation such as this is really kind of expected from my perspective. Not freakish at all.

  • Lisa

    She said that their critics

She did yes but after watching every single season I have learned what the judges say during their critics DO influence the voting public

  • Keel
Warwick said they look at the demographics of voters, who tend to be mothers and girls. That make-up tends to make it more difficult for girls to get ahead in the contest. They look at the entire season of voting to see if there’s anything that can be done to even the playing field.

Well if nothing else, now we have confirmation of the voting demographic.

How would they know the demographics of who votes? I mean, sure, they would know about the demo of the viewers, but voters? If I dial from my home phone, how do they know it’s me calling instead of my husband (we don’t have kids). If I text, does AT&T tell Idol that I texted one of the Idol number? How do they get my age or my childbearing/rearing status? All I gave AT&T was my credit card number and a billing address. If I call using my Verizon phone, how would Idol get demo information? I haven’t ever voted online, but do they ask me for my age and whether I have children before I can vote? Just wondering.

  • SpenserJ

I’m not sure why James is taking any flack for this at all. The ass-hat behavior a couple of the judges showed toward Haley last night had absolutely nothing to do with James.

Anyway, A James/Haley final would be my wish with either winning.

I could get behind that :).

    ……umm, what?

My thoughts exactly. Ryan and Nigel love to pull this junk about every other week. If it’s not a shocking result (as far as who is leaving), it’s probably somebody in the B2 that hasn’t been in the B2 before.

  • Miss Blue

Slezak just tweeted out an article the possibility of no one going home tonight

If no one goes home, it’s because Scott or James got the least votes.

I’m not one of those people who has ever said I was done with this show. I have loved it since the first season, good and bad. Kelly and Cookie are the only 2 winners I’ve ever gotten right, so I’ve had more than a fair share of disappointments.

But when Haley leaves the show, so do I. I won’t be tuning in again, ever. I don’t like what the show has become, I don’t like what they do to these kids, the blatant manipulation. The judges have been bad for the last 4 seasons, but this year has been the final straw. Actually, last night was the final straw. They have become mean-spirited, unfair, hypocritical, and nothing more than paid toadies.

I now have an alternative to Idol, thank god. And that’s where you’ll find me. Enough is enough.

PS. If you think what Haley finally said to the judges was bad, be happy I was not a contestant. The Eff You’s would have been flying high and loud.

I love me some Slezak but I laughed out loud when I read that. It’s PURE speculation, and basically designed as a hit generator for TV Line.

It ain’t gonna happen. They’ve already done the save. Unless there’s a technical problem, somebody WILL be going home tonight.

Ryan Seacrest tweeted today, “Tonight will be a VERY interesting #americanidol. Good luck @LAlainaAI10, @JDurbinAI10, @SMcCreeryAI10 & @HReinhartAI10

The word “interesting” in the message is really interesting. Does this mean that there is no elimination tonight and for the first time in AI history, two will be sent home next week? Well, it’s the 10th year and I bet AI does not care if they have to incur more profit losses just for this “super controversial” season.

Lauren Alaina tweeted today, “Todays the big day! Thanks for all of the amazing support ! Xoxo<3"

Does her message mean she got into the Top 3 safely? Your guess is as good as mine!

    James Durbin tweeted today,
"ok folks..hows everyone feelin about tonight? And anon a lighter note, Who likes the beard..who doesnt?"

Hmmm… seems like he doesn't care as much as everyone else except that he cares about what he's goin' to do next. LOL.

Well, Haley and Scotty probably have figured out what is destined to happen tonight that's why they're both not sayin' anything.

Quite honestly, I am not in favour of the possible "no elimination for tonight" and I really do not care who gets eliminated just in case they stick to the original plan. I want Haley out but with the unfair treatment she received last night, part of me really-really want her to stay.

    Good Luck to ALL.

  • Ringo

    Miss Blue sez:

But when Haley leaves the show, so do I. I won’t be tuning in again, ever.

I feel this more this year than in others, particularly when I get tied up in the contest aspect of the show rather than the performance. The way I look at it, for all its flaws, but for AI I seriously doubt I ever would have heard of my favorites: Haley, Crystal, Adam, Kris, Carly, etc. I would not have heard them perform their mements. So when Haley goes, I’m done for the season, but only because I have yet to hear anything close to a moment from these others.

  • girlygirl

That would be total BS if no one gets sent home tonight. So what if one of TPTB’s favorites get booted? That’s the way it goes — if you are just going to continue to ignore the public’s votes, why even bother have them vote in the first place? I don’t want to see haley leave, but I will be far angrier if TPTB pull some stupid stunt like saying no one is leaving, because that’s just saying that they will manipulate this show as much as they want, that they have given up even the slightest pretence of caring about the public.

Top 4 week — it’s too late for people to get do overs.

  • honeywoman

Sorry! I am the newbie who messed up…that said, I feel it is Lauren’s turn to go. She really hasn’t stepped it up ) like I thought she would.
I admire Haley, but I am looking forward to a Scotty/James finale.

Once again, I didn’t mean to offend anyone in my last post.

Think I was having a conversation there with myself. Nothing to see here folks :).

Other than – someone is definitely going home tonight. I love Slezak, but he’s out of his mind on this one.

I woke up this morning thinking it would not be Haley going home
because of all that happened, that it would be Lauren.

  • NOLA

I think Haley will go home, but the night will be interesting because JLo and Randy will issue her a formal apology. (A girl can dream.)

I hope that does not happen. This blog has bitched the whole season that the judges haven’t critiqued the contestants, and last night Haley fully deserved their harsh comments. I agree with everything Randy and JLo said. I hope they don’t backtrack tonight. Yes, I can hear a lot of you yelling that they haven’t critiqued anybody but Haley this season; which really isn’t true. Scotty got his, Lauren got hers. James, not so much. When the criticism lands in the lap of your favorite, it smarts. I can understand that.

I hope Haley goes home. I’m really nervous it will be James though. From the way some were talking last night, it seemed that not a lot had voted for James.

I guess Nigel got what he wanted. Instead of the apathy I felt during season 9, I feel enraged about season 10. Jennifer Lopez has got to be one of the shrewdest women in music as she has arranged herself to get paid an ungodly amount of money to pimp herself all. season. long. Who is she to judge a singing contest, when she doesn’t sing live and it takes over 3 hours to tape a 3 minute song? After this season of Idol, she has left a really bad taste in my mouth.

    End rant.

    p.s. Go Haley!

Ryan finds out who is going home earlier in the day before the elimination episode is filmed. He recently mentioned on the radio that he has a “secret” to keep every week while the contestants are looking at him wondering who’s next.

PS I want James to make the top 3 just so I can go to his homecoming festivities on Saturday. Is that bad?

  • tomr

Some people may quit watching if/once Haley is eliminated? LOL Am I the only one thinking some evil thoughts? (I’m not Lauren)

  • Nativenewyorker

I hope that does not happen. This blog has bitched the whole season that the judges haven’t critiqued the contestants, and last night Haley fully deserved their harsh comments. I agree with everything Randy and JLo said. I hope they don’t backtrack tonight. Yes, I can hear a lot of you yelling that they haven’t critiqued anybody but Haley this season; which really isn’t true. Scotty got his, Lauren got hers. James, not so much. When the critisism lands in the lap of your favorite, it smarts. I can understand that.

Thank you so much for saying this! Scotty was told to step it up and give it more than he had been and the judges were right to say it. Lauren has had some criticism along the way. Jacob got some and also was basically told every single week by Jimmy that he had one foot out the door. Stefano was given criticism on a night when no one else was, so this whole business of poor Haley being singled out, is nonsense.

Nobody said life is fair. If Haley thinks this is bad, then she will be in for a huge shock if she intends to have a career in this business. As far as I am concerned, she should have smiled and said thank you and kept her poise and composure. Keeping it together in the face of tough criticism isn’t easy, but she would have made them look even worse than they did. Then you go out there and sing your face off and let that do the talking for you.

I don’t know if this matters in the least but last night was the first time my family decided to vote since Season 8. We live in West Hollywood and started trying to vote for Haley with a cell phone number from the midwest during the show, her numbers were constantly busy. Then after the show on the West Coast we used our home phone lines and our cell phone and we were unable to get through on Haley’s line…EVER. However, after 11:30 PT, we decided to experiment a little and tired the numbers for Lauren, Scotty and James….and we got through with no problem…for what it’s worth.

I have no problems at all with Haley getting criticism every week. But it’s the fact that she gets more criticism than everyone else, deserved or not. Has James gotten a single piece of criticism since the live shows started?

If no one gets the boot tonight, what about my pool points?
Afterall, it’s all about me & my pool points–isn’t it? :o)

I think it’s not the fact that Haley got the harsh comments last night- because Earth Song was terrible. What bothered me was how the criticism went on, and on and on, and on and on. Compounded with the fact that there have been any number of performances where the contestant had pitch problems and it received “the performance of the night! You’re in it to win it” type comments- that was what made the Haley bashing too much (and I don’t even like her).

I am going to vote that Haley goes home tonight. Unjustly. I don’t think that the furor was large enough to keep her on. I keep reading that so many people who liked her were all of a sudden mad at her for being smug and spoiled. I have a group of friends that I discuss idol with, to a one they dislike her. I don’t get it, and hate voting personalities, but it is what it is. I would rather MJ be right and it be Lauren. I almost want to go and split my points to be safe…..decisions, decisions.

Not truly I hope Haley stays, but the handwriting is on the wall, and if she is gonna go in the next two weeks I rather she go now and get the benefit of all the press and buzz. The one going in third will get a homecoming, but the shaft as far as media is concerned. So now is better imho, than next week.

  • DLee

It was said earlier in the thread that James is probably going home. I agree.

  • jlc

I put all my points on Lauren.

What bothered me was how the criticism went on, and on and on, and on and on.

I re-watched Haley’s performance & critique today, and I think that if Haley hadn’t started arguing with Randy, he wouldn’t have repeated himself. She prolonged the critique by arguing.

After watching one more time, I’m even more convinced that Haley made that situation worse for herself than it should have been.

  • iluvai

I’ve been convinced that Scotty is safe. I think Lauren is safe. I think Haley is safe. Which leads me to the sad conclusion that James is probably history. I’m going to be watching with one eye closed. lol… I still don’t know what to do with my pool points! I feel bad putting them on James.

It’s kinda late to be asking this, but is there a link to the list that has MJ and the other AI bloggers predictions?

  • brian_ny1976

NOONE IS GOING HOME TONIGHT….THATS THE SPOILER! 2 ARE GOING HOME NEXT WEEK

  • brian_ny1976

haley doesnt deserve an apology…she sucked!

Thing is – whenever Seacrest has indicated the results were likely to shock – they have. So I’m going with the ‘nobody goes home’ or ‘James hits the road’ scenario. If its Haley….I’ll watch the finale – just not bother voting any more. Haley’s voice is the most interesting one left (imo). And I like that she sings in an out-of-the-box style. Oh, I like James and Scotty too….in their respective genres. But Haley’s something special. Handled correctly – she could light up the music biz something fierce. It’s a new decade. The mood is ripe for change. Cowell says groups are the next big thing. Me – I think eclectic is the way to go – and Haley’s that…in spades.

So tonight will be interesting. In any case – I think we are seeing the end of Idol as we’ve known it. One or two more seasons and it will either go or be completely re-invented. Adam Lambert was the shark that got jumped. Everything else seems anti-climactic.

@ mj- I just watched the clip again (well- I skipped the singing). I see what you mean- between the glaring that Haley was doing (talk about giving somebody the malochia lol) and back talking- the critique probably WOULD have ended sooner if Haley had just closed her mouth.

See, that makes me think of the Rodney King beating, the police say he was controlling the action. I think that it wasn’t just at that time, but when Ryan gathered them after the first song for another raking over the coals, that was gratuitous!
