  • girlygirl

I hope Idol is going to release the sales numbers — at least for the compilation album, if not for the individual tracks (although I’d rather they release all the numbers)

  • primeminister

Pia, Scotty, Paul, Naima, and Casey sound great (in that order).

Lauren sounds surprisingly generic. I guess she’s got a great live voice, not so much a recordable voice.

James’ voice sounds terribly thin – his live performance was much better.

  • BrianC82

    Pia sounds great.

  • AmericanIdol8

I think James live performance was amazing!!!! His studio version was not as great but still good enough that I dropped 1.29 on it! Also bought Casey’s and Pia’s. Thanks MJ for the info on how to get these greats songs. I have itune but for some reason I couldn’t get to the American Idol Season 10 site. Thanks to you I didn’t have too. Good looking out there!

  • blkeener

Lauren’s is not good. The backup singers drown her out, and her voice does not come through well. For her sake, I hope it’s just the song choice…a poor one at that. If that is what she sounds recorded…. #fail.

Pia, Scotty, Paul, Naima, and Casey sound great (in that order).

    Agreed.

  • kcostell

A bit heavy on the processing and auto-tuning for my taste. Not just on Naima (where it fits the style), but also on Casey and Haley and even a bit on Scotty and Pia. I’d rather have the slightly imperfect vocals they gave in the live performance.

  • Dlynne

Paul’s is awesome. It’s a very balanced recording. Casey’s vocals are drowned out by the backup singers and the production, which is too bad because I wanted to buy it. James’ isn’t any better.

The rest are overproduced and boring.

  • jtoms

i’m sort of obsessed with naima’s reggae breakdown. and i didn’t even download the song, just listened to the preview!

based on the previews, i liked (aside form naima) jacob, pia, thia, and stefano.

  • springboard

After watching the performances, I only went to ITunes out of curiosity but I found myself playing Paul’s snippet several times, so I bought it and I don’t regret it. It’s one of the few that are not over-produced.

  • BrianC82

Weird. I actually thought Pia’s song was underproduced. She sounds virtually identical to the live performance.

  • springboard

Weird. I actually thought Pia’s song was underproduced. She sounds virtually identical to the live performance.

I agree, Pia’s song is not overproduced, but I prefer the live version that I find fresher and more dynamic.

  • crankypanky

Full version of Thia’s song is streaming at her fansite.I’m very surprised by this recording. I hated her live performance but somehow loved this one!! I think Ashton is going home! IMO, she has the worst track both live and studio version…

  • monleo1705

I guess it’s no wonder Pia seems to be TCO… From the sounds of it, judges and the producers could probably tell she has a voice made for a marketable recording artist. Let’s just hope she IS one of the more successful idolettes to sell records in the future.

  • BootStar

Why can’t you buy the individual tracks? I’m not spending $7.99 every week to get one or two songs. I’ve never downloaded music illegally, but I can see why others do. They’re never going to compete with Glee in terms of sales if this is how they plan to sell the studio recordings.

    Stupid and/or greedy bastardos!

  • springboard

BootStar, you can download individual tracks, but not as album tracks. They are listed as separate individual albums, and they come up if you click on the big rotating banner on the front page.

  • BootStar

Thanks, springboard. I just followed the big American Idol banner ad on the front of iTunes and the only option I saw (on my HUGE computer screen) was the album one. Hopefully they’ll improve the layout stat. I’ve already seen comments complaining about the “album only” issue. Most people will just skip purchasing anything. It never even occurred to me to scroll down the page, and I use iTunes all the time!

  • jersey

MJ also has conveniently provided links to each individual track above. :-)

  • arkhail

i agree. but the voice is kinda too mature. i think the song was divided incorrectly during the live performance that is why the jazz part kinda seemed bad.

  • MaryS-NJ

Late to the party…I’m not seeing where you can buy the individual tracks. When I search the names it takes me to the compilation.I didn’t get to watch last night but I like several of the recordings (Naima, Casey, Paul and Stefano).

Based on the samples at iTunes:

All the country songs were too twangy. Yeah, I guess they’re supposed to be but they sounded slapped together without much thought. I liked Scotty‘s voice, and Haley sounded better recorded than she does live… I could actually understand a few words! Lauren‘s song was cheesy AND twangy and she is generic and kareoke.

Karen, Pia and Thia are so similar recorded and it really goes to show how little musical diversity there is between some of these young women. I like Karen best but this song did NOTHING for her. Pia sounds like Celine Jr but it’s a good fit for her voice. Thia’s voice is richer than I remember, but I hate the song choice. Overall, meh.

Casey sounds great recorded until he growls. I’d be happy if he’d stick to jazz. Paul‘s voice sounds raspy and crispy but that’s what give it flavor. I’m going to like every squeaky moment of his singing this season, I just know it. Stefano sounds very commercial but the arrangement of the song was strange.

Jacob‘s voice is pure but his inspirational songs choices are not inspiring me. James should not wail in the recordings. It doesn’t sound good. Adam knows when to use it and when not to in a way that James doesn’t.

Ashthon sounded okay recorded but it was an insipid song choice. I don’t hear anything distinctive in her voice either.NAIMA was the stand out for me. I think she made that awful tuneless song better than the original.

  • Landmd

So are the single tracks studio versions? I wonder if each week the price will get lower on the album, Im not spending 7.99 for the 3 songs I want.

  • Indigobunting

Wow, Naimas very good. Hope America kept that girl in there!

I’m in the minority, but just not loving Paul live (I thought that was truly awful last night) or recorded.

Pia is very good technically; just leaves me a little cold.

All in all, kind of a good start I think once the top 4 were done, and studio recordings not bad as a whole.

  • springboard

So are the single tracks studio versions? I wonder if each week the price will get lower on the album, Im not spending 7.99 for the 3 songs I want.

Yes, they are. The easiest to find them is probably to follow MJ’s individual links at the top.

  • tripp_ncwy

If you follow the big iTunes banner to the album and scroll to the bottom, you will find the individual tracks.

  • Landmd

Thanks Springboard, Tripp_ncwy. I missed that some how, not awake yet I guess!

I love Paul’s, Casey’s (parts are over done), for some reason Im liking Haley’s too.

  • chearts77

Lauren is even “pitchy” in the studio. eeekkk. Perhaps they are having 2nd thoughts about pimping her so much. Casey sounds good, but drowned out. I want to like Paul. He seems like such a fun and likable guy, but I just can’t get into his voice at all. Pia’s studio sounds really polished and her vocals spot on, but I found myself getting bored listening to it (and she’s my favorite girl). Surprisingly (to myself), I’m enjoying Haley’s studio. I also like James (who I’m also not a big fan of) and of course, Scotty (who IS my favorite this season).

  • abbysee

So here’s my dilemma. I want to purchase 5 songs. Naima, Casey, Paul, Stefano, and James. So is it worth it to buy the whole damn thing for less than two dollars more? I think that’s what they want. Damn basturds. LOL!

  • jpfan

Is the album going to show up on the iTunes album chart? I know the singles don’t chart because that would tell who’s the front runner. But the album won’t do that.

I wonder how many people are going to buy the album — so many crap song choices.

  • leome

I can’t listen before someone uploads them somewhere, but I’m really excited to hear Paul, Scott, Naima, Haley Pia and Casey’s versions.

  • koshka

    The ones that surprised me.

Lauren – very generic, but then I don’t care for country.
Casey – Much, much better than I thought he would be, actually pretty good. Better than his live performance. Needs to growl less.
Pia – sounded great recorded, though this song is still one of those that I wish would be burned from existence on AI… honey sing some current songs and you’ll be golden. Please craptastic producers.. suggest something good next week.
James – I was really hoping to hear something good since he has a good tone to his voice, but he continues to use his voice like a sledge hammer. Need some nuance.
Thia- wow was not expecting this at all. She sounds great. She needs to ramp up her stage presences. She one of those that should have waited a few more years before trying out.
scotty – not type of music, but sounded really good.
Naima bonus points for something actually current and relevant. Sounds processed, but I can envision her in the studio unlike half of what I’ve heard this morning. She needs to listen and take notes from the vocal coaches.

Does anyone know a way to merge Pia’s voice with Naima, stage presence and swagger? LOL

  • Idolnewby

Disclaimer: I like country music. Having said that, Scotty was right. You really have to feel country music to appreciate and sing it. I thought his live voice was great, but what I really like is that his studio recording sounds exactly the same to me. Love it!

The Nashville brass are licking their chops to get their hands on this kid. Can’t wait to see him do duets with some great country artists. He makes it seems so easy….like he was singing in the shower!

  • yf7184

I bought Naima‘s because I was very curious about how the whole arrangement (which was cool but didn’t quite work perfectly in the “live(-ish)” television) would sound. I like it a lot! Idol have finally found someone who is musically current and visually attractive/interesting. Adam was sort of like that (current-ish and visually attractive/interesting) but Naima is even more mainstream-current. I really hope Naima stays on for a while.

  • BootStar

I don’t remember in previous seasons there being such a huge disconnect between what the contestants sound like live and how they sound on their studio recordings. There were a few songs in S7 where both Michael Johns’ and Carly Smithson’s recorded voices sounded much higher than they did live, but these S10 tracks appear to be much more processed than in previous years. And I’m not sure that it’s an improvement.

Idol singles have never been known for their high-production quality, but I guess I was expecting this season to be a big improvement with the addition of the OMG Great Music Legend!1!1 Jimmy Iovine and his associates, but these in general do not sound good to my ears. Frankly, they’re kind of amateurish, even the tracks from the contestants with distinctive voices — Scotty, James (who sounds oddly like John Bon Jovi on his track!), Jacob, Paul. The backup singers are horrendous too for the most part. Yikes.

I think I’d rather have the live versions of the performances I enjoyed. Will they be releasing video this year?

Anyway, in terms of who I think has a good recording voice, Naima, Thia, Pia and — much to my shock — Ashthon and Haley were the only standouts. I wasn’t impressed with any of the guys recorded voices. Not on these anyway. I gotta think the problem must lie with all these “legendary producers,” who apparently don’t regularly work with people who can, you know, actually SING.

And for all the talk of contestants “hiding behind their instruments,” in the past, I’ll take Casey James’ accompanying himself on his tracks last year to any of the studio accompaniment these kids are getting. Casey A. and Paul, in particular, must be kinda shocked at the quality.

  • cheese

None of the studio recordings really wowed me. I would spend $.69 for just the reggae breakdown in Naima’s song, lol. I ended up buying Ryan Adams’ original “Come Pick Me Up.” (I prefer his voice and the real lyrics, although Paul’s is pretty good. I like raspy but his voice veers off into a “James Blunt with strep throat” place sometimes).

  • MayMirabella

Lauren is even “pitchy” in the studio. eeekkk. Perhaps they are having 2nd thoughts about pimping her so much. Casey sounds good, but drowned out. I want to like Paul. Pia’s studio sounds really polished and her vocals spot on, but I found myself getting bored listening to it (and she’s my favorite girl).

I share your impressions of Lauren and Paul.

At this point, I have no favorites and my favorite performances are likely to change from week to week.

  • MayMirabella

I hope Dial Idol is off about the bottom 3 as far as their raw numbers score:

    Jacob Lusk

    Karen Rodriguez

    Ashthon Jones

I can see Ashton and Karen being in the bottom 3 but I think there were those who did worse than Jacob last night. I do not think he should be in the bottom 3. I would replace Jacob with Hayley or Thia. If Hayley or Thia are not in bottom 3 tonight, well we can figure out they have a large fanbase voting for them. ( I suspect they do unfortunately)…Hayley and Thia bore me is the main thing.

Ashton will probably go home, no shocker there at all if she does, but Jacob in bottom 3..hope that does not happen.

  • Kirsten

The Nashville brass are licking their chops to get their hands on this kid.

There are probably folks on Music Row writing songs for Scotty right now.

will ck the others out later

James’ voice sounds terribly thin – his live performance was much bette

Agreed, I wouldn’t buy that. I liked Scotty, and Naima, I also thought Karen and Haley sounded good. But Haley’s is quite a short song.

  • tinawina

Oh absolutely. That boy is beyond set right now.

I hope Dial Idol is off about the bottom 3 as far as their raw numbers score:

    Jacob Lusk

    Karen Rodriguez

    Ashthon Jones

I actually could see that happening. Elton would be mad again, though. LOL

I only listened to the snippets at low volume because I’m sitting in the library right now, but I think Ashton, Pia, Scotty, Casey and Naima sounded good, and Thia sounded like Diana Krall or someone who should be singing songs like that.

  • Allison

I wonder if they are going to offer an album of all of each singer’s songs down the road. It would be cheaper than $1.29 per song, which from unsigned artists is too much money.

  • Inconnu

I ended up buying Come pick me up by Ryan Adams after listening to all the tunes. The only song I like. (ETA: Tempted to download Paul’s. I think I like his faster pace better).

Stand-out recording voices: Scotty, Pia and Thia, none of them being my favs.

    Most current recording: Naima

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

i find Paul McD amusing.. but for RyanAdams the best i’ve ever heard on any idol show was Earl Stevenson singin Two on Cdn Idol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6nT8fQfd1Y
love scotty’s recording and thia (hope thia lasts a bit longer)

  • Studio57

The only ones I wanted to check out were James, Naimi, Paul, Casey and Pia. The only ones I listened throughout the whole snippet were Pauls and Naimi’s. Think I’m gonna buy both. Those two right there are the perfect example of why the best VOICE shouldn’t always win. They were both a little out of tune yesterday but it’s nothing a studio can’t fix.

James’ voice sounded really thin on the recording- liked live better.

I actually think the recordings are much higher production quality than prior years. They do sound a bit slick, but they sound MUCH more professional to me than what has been done in past years.

You do? I think they sound like crap, very cheap production. I think it was much better when the singers worked with Minor and the band instead. Some of the production here is laughable imo.

  • gangreen29

You do? I think they sound like crap, very cheap production. I think it was much better when the singers worked with Minor and the band instead. Some of the production here is laughable imo.

Yeah, they sound like actual recorded music. In the past the songs sounded like people recording in the garage lol.

  • Idolnewby

There are probably folks on Music Row writing songs for Scotty right now.

Agree completely. Wouldn’t it be interesting if some of these writers actually approached him…rather then the opposite…to get him to sing their song….hysterical! Love it!

  • BootStar

I actually think the recordings are much higher production quality than prior years. They do sound a bit slick, but they sound MUCH more professional to me than what has been done in past years.

You could be right. I think the problem for me (not so much for you, obviously!) is that they’re all so over-produced they sound manufactured as opposed to performed. I didn’t buy a lot of songs last season, but the ones I did had the vocal out front and center. I buy the songs for the singer, not the production, so that would be my preference. Given that this season’s singers are on the whole much better than last season’s, I just think it’s a shame.

(After reading that interview with Byrd, though, I did go back and buy Naima’s track. I just love her!)

  • MaryS-NJ

Thanks, MJ, for posting the individual song links.

I just bought Naima‘s. It sounds great, has the best production of all the tracks and I LOVE the Reggae bits in the middle. This woman sounds radio-ready to me. I regret not having been able to vote for Naima last night and hope she doesn’t get screwed by having a weird call in number.

I like Paul’s recording better than the live vocal, but I don’t like the production. I think I’m going to have to love his indie music and may be perpetually disappointed that the Idol production is always excessive or cheap. I also like Stefano’s recorded voice but the arrangement was odd. I liked Casey’s live performance better than the recording. I’ll think about buying some of these. I have to play the samples a bit more to see if they will have a home in my iPod.

  • blissful

Never thought I would ever buy a Rhianna song, but I loved the reggae bit — it was actually Naima’s idea and writing, according to the Debra Byrd article (thanks Bootstar for the heads up).

I wonder if she gets a writing credit.

Voted for the first time, wanted to make sure Naima gets through.

  • aa618892

Naima sounds great recorded, very current.
Pia was enjoyable, she has a lovely voice but it could have been better.
James was much better live. The recording lost some of the richness of his voice but I don’t like this song either so maybe that has something to do with it, lol.

I will have to check out the rest later.

  • koshka

Pia – sounded great recorded, though this song is still one of those that I wish would be burned from existence on AI… honey sing some current songs and you’ll be golden. Please craptastic producers.. suggest something good next week.

Ok I’m quoting myself. LOL I was curious as to what Pia’s music preference is by doing a search on her pre-idol stuff & I came up with some decent/good stuff. I would have liked to see them rearranged… but at least her taste isn’t all big ballads.

Maybe that’s why Jimmy doesn’t get Scotty.

I don’t know if you meant to put that in this post, but I believe that’s going to happen tonight. You know the minorities are picked off first. You shouldn’t be surprised at this point.

I actually could see that happening. Elton would be mad again, though. LOL

I don’t even think Elton cares anymore.

I only listened to a little of Jacob’s, but the recording sounds better than the live performance.

Found the complete audio sampler and review of the tracks here.

The audio sampler is helpful esp to other countries where these songs aren’t available for sale! :)
