The Amazing Race: All Stars Episode 3 Recap (UPDATED)

Tonight the teams traveled to Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Read on to find out how teams fared in rafting down a river and which all-star team was eliminated.

Brendon and Rachel are the first team to depart, and they learn their new destination is Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. They must go to the Kionsom Waterfall to get their next clue. But first they need to get tickets to travel there. There are two flights, and the first one has a three hour advantage. However, only six teams can board that flight, meaning three teams will be three hours behind on the second flight.

On the way to the airport, Brendon and Rachel get stuck in traffic. Even though they were the first team to depart to the airport, they are passed by six other teams. Dave and Connor, Margie and Luke, Jet and Cord, Flight Time and Big Easy, Caroline and Jennifer, and Leo and Jamal arrive at the ticket counter before Brendon and Rachel do. Leo and Jamal also happened to have booked tickets just minutes before them. So this means Brendon and Rachel will be on the second flight with John and Jessica and Joey and Meghan.

Even though the teams on the second flight know they are in last place, they are still very friendly with each other and claim that they will try to help each other if they can. They hope that maybe the first flight will be delayed. However, the first flight arrives on time.

Dave and Connor are the first team to the clue box at the Kionsom Waterfall. It’s a Roadblock that requires one team member to rappel down a waterfall with a Travelocity gnome and retrieve a clue on the way down. Dave does the task, as well as Jamal (he and Leo arrived at the Roadblock shortly after Dave and Connor).

Jet and Cord and Margie and Luke arrive at the Roadblock third and fourth respectively. However, as Cord was doing the task, he climbed down the waterfall without picking up a clue. Therefore, he has to redo the Roadblock, which allows Luke to complete the task before him; Margie and Luke are now in third place. However, Cord still completes the task before Flight Time and Jennifer complete it for their teams. So the cowboys are in fourth place by the time they make their way to their next destination: Kampung Tompinahaton.

Dave and Connor arrive there first and learn that they now have a Detour to complete. They can either deliver goods or pretend to hunt in the jungle, but both tasks require rafting through the river. Dave and Connor choose to deliver supplies as they begin constructing their raft. But before they’re done, Leo and Jamal and Margie and Luke arrive at Kampung Tompinahaton and both teams decide to deliver supplies too. All three teams are simultaneously working on building their rafts until Dave and Connor are the first team into the water, followed by Leo and Jamal.

Jet and Cord arrive and get to work on constructing their rafts. They also choose to deliver supplies, and they even manage to get ahead of Margie and Luke in the water. Jet and Cord are now in third place, with Margie and Luke in fourth place.

The first four teams are already rafting by the time Flight Time and Big Easy and Caroline and Jennifer arrive and get to work on their rafts. However, unlike the teams ahead of them, they choose to hunt in the jungle. The task basically requires each team member to knock down a fake bird with a blowgun.

Meanwhile, Dave and Connor have made their way to the delivery station, but they missed their turn. So now they are traveling much farther down the river than they need to. Leo and Jamal were right behind them, but they don’t miss the turn. They deliver their supplies first, and are now in first place. And as they are about to depart, they come across Jet and Cord. The cowboys ask them if that was the correct place to drop off the supplies, and Leo and Jamal decide to tell the truth and say yes. They admit that this was out of character for them. If anyone remembers last season, Leo and Jamal were notorious for being very shifty liars. The Afghanimals say that they won’t lie as often anymore since they don’t want to be U-Turned twice like they were last time.

Jet and Cord are now in second place by the time they drop off their supplies. Dave and Connor finally realized that they missed the delivery area, so they leave their raft at the very end of the river and take a long walk to the delivery station. Meanwhile, Leo and Jamal are struggling in the river, especially with the very strong current that results in their raft crashing and being disassembled. As they are struggling, they see Jet and Cord pass them with ease. As well, Margie and Luke deliver their supplies, but they must make their way down the river too. Behind them are the Globetrotters and the country singers, and they too are struggling in the river due to the very fast rapids.

Meanwhile, the last three teams arrive at the airport and get taxis to the waterfall task. Jessica and John are barely ahead, with Brendon and Rachel in eighth and Joey and Meghan in last place. Since all the other teams are already rafting down the river by this point, it is very clear that it’s only these three teams that are in danger of elimination.

Caroline and Jennifer and Flight Time and Big Easy are hunting with bamboo blowguns in the jungle. Jennifer hits her target on her first try and Flight Time doesn’t take too long to hit his. But they must wait for their teammates to hit a target too before they can get their clue for the Pit Stop.

Dave and Connor finally arrive at the delivery station. But since their raft was already at the end of the river, they are back in first place when they walk back down there. They open a clue and find out that they can now proceed to the Pit Stop: Tanjun Aru Water Village, home to 3,000 people. Dave and Connor are ahead, but Jet and Cord and Leo and Jamal are close behind them. It’s hinted that it’s a footrace to the Pit Stop, but Dave and Connor arrive there before the cowboys and the Afghanimals. Dave and Connor are Team #1 and they win a trip for two to Budapest, Hungary. Dave and Connor are already absent from the mat when Jet and Cord and Leo and Jamal arrive at the mat seconds apart, but Jet and Cord are Team #2 and Leo and Jamal are Team #3.

Meanwhile, the bottom three teams finally make their way to Kionsom Waterfall. It is Jessica, Rachel, and Joey doing the task for their respective teams. They all do it without any problems, but Joey and Meghan have no taxi waiting for them to take them to their next location. Since John and Jessica and Brendon and Rachel had taxis waiting for them, Joey and Meghan are obviously in last place as they run down the road until they have a local call a taxi for them.

Before we get to John and Jessica and Brendon and Rachel at the Detour, Margie and Luke check-in at the Pit Stop in fourth place. Big Easy and Caroline finally hit a target and they make their way to the Pit Stop with their teammates too. The Globetrotters arrive at the mat as Team #5, making the country singers Team #6 when they arrive at the Pit Stop.

We are now left with the last three teams. John and Jessica’s raft is very shoddily built, but it is Brendon and Rachel who have the most trouble in the river. Their raft comes apart multiple times, and, at one point, Brendon had to swim to find a new stick to guide them along the currents.  Even though they had extreme difficulty in the water, the married couple just gets slightly frustrated without either of them losing their temper.

John and Jessica do the hunting task. Jessica hits her target at once, but it takes John several attempts to strike a fake bird with his blowgun. John even likens the two of them to Pocahontas and John Smith due to how well Jessica did and how poorly John was at the task. They eventually complete the Detour and arrive at the Pit Stop as Team #7.

Brendon and Rachel finally arrive at the hunting task too while Joey and Meghan are shown to have little problems in the water. The YouTubers are on their way to the hunting task too. But even though Brendon and Rachel kept missing their targets, they finally complete the Detour in time. And despite Brendon and Rachel’s hardships this leg of the race, Joey and Meghan were just too far behind. Brenchel are Team #8 when they arrive at the mat (which is a pleasant surprise to them), which means the YouTubers are the last team to check-in. And unfortunately, Joey and Meghan are eliminated from the race. Meghan admits that it’s slightly embarrassing to be eliminated from the race so early, but she and Joey assert that they had fun racing for a second time.

I thought tonight was a decent episode. The three hour advantage did take a lot of suspense out of the episode. It would’ve been nice if there was an equalizer at the start of the leg, but maybe there will be one next week? I thought the tasks the teams competed in were pretty good. The Detour was especially challenging, but it is an all-star season after all. As well, I was sad to see Joey and Meghan get eliminated. I enjoyed them on the race last year; they were a fun and energetic team that I thought was root-worthy, so they will be missed.
