My first reaction when Regis introduced Allison Iraheta singing “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” was “good God, NO!” But, her performances is absolutely fantabulous. So, it’s all good.

Listening back to her tracks, I think she’s going to be a bigger star than anyone really realizes at this moment. She’s still so young. I think she’ll be making her mark.

  • Heart

Way to go, Allison! You sounded beautiful!

  • Jayd

She sounded good, but they didn’t give her a lot of time to set up. It seemed rushed to me. I like the extra growl there towards the end.

I’m thinking she must be someone who appears to be very huggable. Regis kept giving her grandfatherly hugs. I’ll miss you Allison!

  • beckhome55

I feel like Obi-Wan and Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back: “that [girl] was our only hope.” “No…there is another.” Sing on Kris, knock ‘em dead!!

Reality check: Adam will win because Idol needs someone like Adam to keep the shark away. But for me, Idol is all about Allison and Kris, nobodies becoming somebodies right before our eyes.

What a set of pipes, I bet that’s what Bonnie Raitt sounded like at age 17.

  • PattyH

    I love this girl!

  • Lu

Allison is all kinds of awesome.

  • jerzytrash

Hmmm – I love Allison. She’s got all kinds of heart; I love her whole vibe and I think she got the Raw Deal on AI..that said, to me this did not sound good. She didn’t sound merely raspy, she sounded hoarse and I think her high note was a little screamy. Just OK for me dawg. *Note to Allison** GO read Masterclass Lady: Take CARE of your voice, sweetie!!!!!

I’m going to listen to the video again before I hit “submit”

Sorry – 2nd listen – still not good. Love to all. :)

  • gingerly

While I think this performance was better than the one on Idol, I’m still not loving this song for Allison. IMO she was so much more awesome on just about every other song she sang.

  • Pixie Baker

Oh, man!!!! America got this sooooo wrong! I love listening to Allison…..I am *gonna* miss her…………..:( Pix

  • RubySlippers

Still can’t believe she left before Gokey.
    Wtf America?!!!
    Can’t wait for her album.

  • annabelina

Well, I thought she killed it. Although, yes, not my favorite song for her, but she seems to like it a lot since she said that was definitely the song she’d do on tour, so what can you do? I still love her to death. I’m kinda glad she went out fourth so she could do the media rounds. I can just picture everyone who hasn’t seen her on Idol thinking “What the hell were those Idol watchers thinking voting this girl off?” :) I like how everyone always says to her “I can’t wait to buy your record and/or hear/play you on the radio”. Go go Allison!!!

  • Dr. Tracey

awwwww Allison is great, I can’t wait for her to put out a CD.
Too bad she won’t be on Idol this week. :-(

  • Miss Chaos

The people watching and didnt vote for her are the same people that watched and voted for Danny Goaway! :doh_tb:

  • Jillianjiggs

Wow, what a great job! They really have to shorten up the songs don’t they? Allison is so great, she was my fav along with Anoop.
She will be so successful, more so than smug Danny. I hope her album has lots of rock to it, I absolutely LOVED her Cry Baby and bought the studio, it’s her best song in my opinion. America better shape up and make it an Adam/Kris finale!

Everyone should check out the latest Idolatry on EW.com. It’s a great tribute to Allison!

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Rock on, Lava Girl! It wasn’t my favorite song choice either, but she’s great. I wonder if she’ll do the same song on Ellen.

  • TKat

She was great! Love her, not the song choice. But she will do great — and yes, America did get this one wrong.

  • GeminiDolly

Oh Alli, why this song??? Still got loads of love for you and cant wait to buy your music.

  • Lojolauk

“I absolutely LOVED her Cry Baby and bought the studio, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s her best song in my opinion.”

Jillianjiggs, I totally agree with you! Allison may turn out to be the most successful from this season. I will definitely buy her CD.

  • ppwars

    Song selection…

    …there in lies the rub.

…Seems the majority of Alli’s fans regarded her performance of AGMAT as her least effective. She regards the performance her best, or at least her favorite.

…my heart sunk as I re-played the DVR ( Regis and Ellen shows), and the song was announced. Why choose this! Not bad, but hardly stellar. Another tactical mistake. There were much better options to showcase her talent.

…A rushed, chopped version of AGMAT simply is never going to make anyone look great.

…Alli’s toughest challenge in the near future is to balance her “true-to-myself” image with reasonable compromise to support her fans and grow her base – reasonable compromise to leave viewers in awe.

  • mandabutter

I love pretty much everything Allison does. I hope they allow her to get some rest. I don’t think she’ll do the same song on ‘Ellen Show’ because Matt G. sang So Small on Regis and then Let’s Get it On on Ellen.

Responding to a previous poster: does the 3rd place finisher not get to do media rounds?? I didn’t follow the blogs or shows last year after the finalists went home – as much as I have this season. ….Also, don’t the final 3 do Jay Leno? I remember them appearing last yr. Maybe that’s why the 3rd place doesn’t get to go on talk shows after being eliminated and i just answered my own question.

  • Caffiend

OK, that was friggin’ awesome. She sounded amazing.

  • mandalay

Ever since Cry Baby, I’ve been trying to remember who sang that with Melissa Etheridge in a Janis Joplin tribute. No one can ever top Melissa’s Piece of My Heart that incredible night, but I personally like Allison’s version of Cry Baby a hell of a lot better than Joss Stone’s.

  • sma11ie

I don’t get it– she has sooo many great performances to choose from, and IDWMAT was one of her worst performances on AI… Maybe she wanted to redeem herself and improve it? But it’s still not a good song, especially compared to the other gems she’s got. I remember, I was like NOOO, when she mentioned wanting to do it on tour, and was hoping she’d change her mind… but now, I think she really likes that song. Eek.

Word to the nth word, mandalay. Melissa was freakin amazing, especially considering she couldn’t even rehearse due to her chemotherapy. I watch that video often (but not for the Joss Stone part). Allison freaking blew her out the water. *goes off to watch again*

  • reeboks1

i really wish she were singing smoething else. IDWMAT was my least favorite song she performed. and not because of her performance, but because it’s a shitty song! irritating as hell! she still sounds amazing. bummer she does it on ellen too. cry baby would have been my preference, i cannot get enough of her singing that song.

  • ppwars

WHOOPS! Post above i meant IDWMAT- tried to banish it from my mind!

  • sleeptalker

“I was like WHOA.” Sooo adorable. This girl definitely has personality: she’s real

I LOVE Allison!! It’s going to be so hard watching Idol this week without her…

IDWMAT was not her best live performance, definitely. Especially with just a pianist to accompany…STWOM would have been a great choice for this show.

  • carolinacharms

Never liked the song, but she sang the hecka out of it.

  • ppwars

Didn’t she go off key in both performances about 1/2 way thru?

  • earthy

She should still be here over Danny or Kris but she will have more post idol success then either of those two anyways.

  • JohnM

So disappointed that she’s doing the IDWTMAT crapfest, but so thrilled that she really nailed it this time, after the AI performance gave her trouble.

jerzytrash: She didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sound merely raspy, she sounded hoarse and I think her high note was a little screamy.

I disagree about the screaminess, but…. I think all the high-finishing contestants get strained, first from the competition, and then from the barrage of appearances during the press tour. So I think she sounds great here in light of that. Interestingly (and weirdly!), I found a Youtube by someone who edited David Cook’s and Allison’s studio versions of this song together — and I was rather shocked by how raspy he sounded and what a relief it was each time her beautiful voice came back into the edit. Nothing against DC — I like him a whole bunch and am married to a DC fanatic — but I think his voice was pretty shredded by that point last year.

Jillianjiggs: They really have to shorten up the songs donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t they?

Yeah — the version she sang on AI was a pretty bad edit, and this one is even more jarring, because it cuts out part of the bridge as well.

ppwars: Why choose this! Not bad, but hardly stellar. Another tactical mistake. There were much better options to showcase her talent.

As much as I hate this song, I actually think it makes a lot of sense from the standpoint of showcasing vocal talent. It’s a power ballad (yecchh), which lets you straddle the rock-type audience and the ballad audience (soft, ballady verse, powerful ending). It works the singer’s range well, highlighting the low end at the start and building to the high end, and builds to those couple of glory notes. So I think it actually makes for a useful vocal showcase. Still a sucky song though!

And as sma11ie said, maybe she just likes it. She is entitled to one mistake, isn’t she? :wink_wp:

sleeptalker: IDWMAT was not her best live performance, definitely. Especially with just a pianist to accompanyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Yeah, solo piano accompaniment doesn’t fit well with the powerful vocal of the back half of the song. But it actually works really well for the verse — I really like that section, with just the piano and her beautiful lower register.

And, bottom line…. Once again that darned girl has gotten that stupid song stuck in my head and made me like it! Damn, she’s good!

  • TwigLA

    Allison on Ellen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWGAt-SCek

She’s just awesome and so much fun. Glad that she had a sit down interview with Ellen.
The girl is going to be a real star.

  • JohnM

ppwars: Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t she go off key in both performances about 1/2 way thru?

By now you’ve probably seen my comment above about the fact that this edit is even more jarring than the AI edit because they cut out part of the bridge. Are you thinking that she went off key on the line about “staying here in this moment for all the rest of time”?

If so, that’s exactly the jarring bridge edit I’m talking about. When I heard it on TV this morning and she hit that part, I thought to myself, “Oh no, I bet some people will think she went off key there,” because that edit throws you into an unexpected part of the song. A really bad editing job.

Aside from that, I heard a few very small pitch problems that didn’t bother me much and I suspect most people didn’t even notice.

  • ppwars

JohnM: Are you thinking that she went off key on the line about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“staying here in this moment for all the rest of timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

    That is exactly the spot.

  • hwc

“I watch that video often (but not for the Joss Stone part). Allison freaking blew her out the water. *goes off to watch again*”

I actually prefer Josh Stone’s version. She captures a bit of the flavor of Janis Joplin, but still sings in a relatively natural voice without overdoing the affectation. I don’t think she’s a great singer, but she’s got a pleasant enough voice and does a good job interpreting these kinds of songs.

Mellissa Etheridge (whom I normally cannot stand) is just fantastic in that video. Standing ovation for that performance.

  • sma11ie

I agree with you that DC’s voice was COMPLETELY shredded by Top 3 night last year. I have a friend who loves IDWMAT and only saw the Top 3 and Top 2 episodes last season, and has stubbornly decided on the basis of IDWMAT that DC isn’t that great a singer. UGH. I’m like, watch Billie Jean, ABMB, Hello, MOTN, and he refuses. Anyway, rant over– I was gonna say, JohnM, thanks for that link! Despite the aforementioned shreddedness of DC’s voice and my personal meh-ness on the song… I have to say I LOVED that edit! Wow, to the point where I almost got goosebumps thinking about how cool it would have been to see DC and Allison do that song live!

  • JohnM

Boy, just the opposite from here. I think she overdid the affectation way more than Allison, which is my problem with Joss Stone in general — I haven’t heard much of her stuff, but it’s too over the top for me. I wouldn’t damn her with one of my ultimate criticisms — a comparison to Michael Bolton, who has only one setting, 1000% — but I’m afraid the thought did cross my mind!

sma11ie: Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m like, watch Billie Jean, ABMB, Hello, MOTN, and he refuses.

You tell him for me that he’d darn well better watch at least MOTN, or I’ll come over there and kick his stubborn butt! :biggrin_wp:

Wow, to the point where I almost got goosebumps thinking about how cool it would have been to see DC and Allison do that song live!

Yeah, I’ve been thinking for a while that they could do a good duet. Bring it on! Finale night, anyone??

  • MaryS-NJ

I love this girl. I just can’t get excited about the three guys left. Good luck to any and all of them. I’m looking forward to seeing Allison make music in the future.

  • tara8

This girl is going to get picked up by a recording company as soon as her Idol contract lets her. Man.

  • sma11ie

Haha JohnM, I’ve hope that I’ll convince him to watch MOTN someday. And even though I doubt Allison will duet with DC on finale, I’m looking forward to seeing who she gets to perform with!
