I had no idea Allison Iraheta was at the KISS 108 Jingle Ball here in the Boston area Thursday night!

She didn’t perform on the big stage with Jordin Sparks, Justin Bieber (who performed “No Air” with Jordin, I’m hearing), Jay Sean, Owl City and the Fray.

I would have loved to have seen Allison perform the sweet acoustic version of “Scars” she performed in an intimate backstage concert that was streamed live on the KISS 108 website.

After the jump, check out Allison’s searing acoustic version of   “Scars” from her debut album, Just Like You.

Bonus:   From the KISS 108 website:   Jordin Sparks and Justin Bieber perform “No Air” HERE. Interview HERE. Erm. That Bieber dude kinda sucks. Not gonna lie.

Seriously beautiful and moving. I want a live version of every song on her album.

  • wickedelphie10

So, the acoustic version is absolutely incredible! It has so much emotion to it and is just beautiful!

  • isisdagmar

Thanks for posting it, MJ. :)

  • csprof

Wow! Allison is sounding really great in these acoustic performances. I love the softer side of Allison. The vulnerability of this song and the hard-edged vocals really work well together.

  • jordison

Mindblowingly beautiful. Just waiting for Allison to explode onto the music scene. Please!

    Agree about that Bieber dude.

  • jordison

Anyone in the Athens, Georgia area -

Allison will perform at the University of Georgia on Saturday.

Also, does anyone have any idea when AOL is going to release her Sessions? We’re getting antsy!

  • Rub

It was tough to go to bed last night after listening to Scars.
Once again Alli puts herself in a zone and delivers such a haunting song.
    Impeccable vocals on this one.

  • PRMari

She’s just killing these acoustic performances. That girl puts so much emotion into everything she sings it’s crazy. It’s a shame these are small and intimate and not a lot of people get to see them. The girl deserves to be heard, she’s just so much better than all the teen crap out there right now.

Perfect. Very moving. Her ballads make me WEEP. Gah!

  • maturin

Gorgeous and moving. I hope they pair her up with someone cool to tour with.

  • LoveDaRocker

Wow. Very nice. Half the song in the album version is kind-of acoustic, so I am not surprised that it turned out this nice.

  • maturin

WOW, MJ what a contrast on the link to the version of No Air with Jordin and Justin Bieber.

Listened just cause I still love that song. Bieber is terrible. He sounds like a kid at a high school talent show.

Now I love Allison even more.

  • TwigLA

Allison – lovely as always. Her voice is gorgeous on ballads.

I watched Bieber on the radio site for one of Kris’ jingle balls (Sacramento?). I couldn’t believe how bad he was. I had never heard his stuff before. But he’s ‘cute’ for the little girls and that’s all that really matters. Isn’t it?

  • jms

Wow. If they’d release an acoustic EP of the best of these live performances, I’d buy that right quick.

  • LoveDaRocker

An Allison unplugged/storytellers-type concert would be cool.

  • RowZee824

I agree with jms. I really like these acoustic versions better than the actual album.

I would like to know how that Beiber kid got a contract (that was cringe-worthy). I don’t get the no-talent kids (Miley) being shoved at us…does Justin have a famous Dad as well? I suspect his voice is heavily tampered with on recordings…why don’t they just find a kid who can actually, you know, SING?

  • Mark

I would like to know how that Beiber kid got a contract (that was cringe-worthy). I don’t get the no-talent kids (Miley) being shoved at us’ ¦does Justin have a famous Dad as well? I suspect his voice is heavily tampered with on recordings’ ¦why don’t they just find a kid who can actually, you know, SING?

If you’ve heard the single (I have; it’s still pretty ubiquitous on radio), you’ll note his voice is pretty processed. As to how he got the contract… he’s a YouTube phenom, no? Doing R&B covers? I can’t quite remember any specifics.

But for a fetus with hair (thank you for the imagery, Jim Cantiello!), I suppose his vocal ability is up to par. But only for that.

  • PRMari

It really is sad when someone like this kid and Miley sell tons of records but a talented young woman like Allison gets overlooked (so far). If there is any justice in the world, she will have a successful career.

  • alli lurker

Scars is not one of my favorites on Allison’s album, and unlike her acoustic version of Just Like You, this acoustic version didn’t do anything to change that for me. The chorus (when she gets to “I’ve got flaws…”) just sounds disjointed to me.

I also think the lyrics to the song appeal to a younger crowd. I prefer her female-empowerment songs (Just Like You, Don’t Waste the Pretty, You Don’t Know Me).

  • PRMari

Aw, come on “Take me, this is all that I’ve got, this is all that I’m not, all that I’ll ever be” That’s a great line. I don’t think it’s particularly aimed at a younger crowd.

  • Mrs.P

“It really is sad when someone like this kid and Miley sell tons of records”

Less we forget kids are always looking to be part of the incrowd and right now the big sales pitch is Justin and Miley and the Jonas Brothers and Taylor. So parents who just want to keep their kids quiet and out of their hair will spend the bucks to buy these horrendous albums for their kids. Then the kids are cool and the parents don’t have to spend the time to introduce their offspring to real music and explain to them that it isn’t bad to have different interests then all their little twit friends.

Many parents are pretty lazy and they just let the advertising world raise their kids. So sad.

  • nina.t

    Awesome…love her, what else :)

  • alli lurker

Aw, come on ‘Take me, this is all that I’ve got, this is all that I’m not, all that I’ll ever be’ That’s a great line.

You’re right, PRMari, that is a great line – the best part of the song. It’s the first line “Did I say something stupid? There goes one more mistake.” that I personally don’t relate to.

Just my opinion. We all have them…

  • JohnM

The girl does it again. As usual. This song is the best showcase on the album for her delicate delivery, and she demonstrated it again, especially at the very end (which happens to be my favorite part of the album recording).

And “Interesting Dave” made a very nice change to the chord progression at the beginning of the chorus — improves it quite a bit in my book. He also changed the bridge a little bit and arranged the ending beautifully.

I’ve had a problem with the album recording of this song because they didn’t capture the bottom end of her voice very well (the same problem that a lot of her AI studio recordings had). As with most of her live recordings, this one does have more of that richness, fortunately.

I’m kind of with alli lurker on the song itself. Unlike what seems to be just about everyone else, I’m not blown away by it. I haven’t been able to put my finger on why — I think it must just be that it’s not very interestingly written — and I do agree with alli lurker about the disjointedness of the chorus. I think Trouble Is is the vastly superior ballad and should absolutely be “the ballad single”. But this version is definitely better than the album version.

I don’t know if the radio station site is down, but the link to the Jordin/Bieber duet isn’t working for me. Sounds like that’s probably a good thing!

  • PRMari

I agree that Trouble is is better written but they’re two totally different types of songs for me and she sings them differently as well, which means both showcase different things about her. This one is more tender, Trouble is is more powerful/rock ballad.

  • JohnM

alli lurker: It’s the first line ‘Did I say something stupid? There goes one more mistake.’ that I personally don’t relate to.

Oh man, that’s my favorite line in the song!

Just my opinion. We all have them’ ¦

“We allll have our opinnnnions, we all have our opinions…” ;-)

  • JohnM

PRMari: but they’re two totally different types of songs for me and she sings them differently as well, which means both showcase different things about her.

Yup, and that’s highlighted by my comment about Scars being the best showcase for her delicate delivery, which is great.

  • alli lurker

Just wanted to add that the line near the end of the song…

“Deep down I know what you need, and I’m not sure that’s what I want to be.”

… is also one that I like.

  • JohnM

In case people missed my post last night in Headlines — the Portland, Oregon station that added her this week really cranked up her single yesterday. A guy from the station tweeted about it (thanks PRMari for the RT), so I checked, and they played it a total of 4 times on Tuesday and Wednesday combined, but 6 times yesterday. And all of those spins were daytime and evening, none overnight, which is a big change from other stations, which have mostly been playing it overnight when no one is listening.

And Portland is the biggest market to add her so far — #23 in the US.

  • alli lurker

‘We allll have our opinnnnions, we all have our opinions’ ¦’

Darn it! Why didn’t I think of that? You’re stealin’ my thunder JohnM!

“Taking me under, stealin’ my thunder…” :)

    (We’re such geeks!)

  • Rub

There was a reviewer who said Allison can sell her songs better than anybody in recent history(or something like that), and I agree 100%.
She sold me Scars and I bought it – even if it was in Mandarine. It takes a little more to like this, more than your average catchy bridge. She wraps herself around this song so tight, that I was looking for tracks of tears down her face. I try not to listen to this song too much because it can change my mood – she’s that good in this one.

  • LoveDaRocker

    Mrs.P
Less we forget kids are always looking to be part of the incrowd and right now the big sales pitch is Justin and Miley and the Jonas Brothers and Taylor

Credit where credit is due. I think Taylor is an amazing talent. Some of her live performances have not been great, but she has put together a great portfolio in her young career. Tim McGraw, Teardrops on My Guitar, and You Belong to Me, IMO, are great songs. Unfair to associate her with those others.

alli lurker: It’s the first line ‘Did I say something stupid? There goes one more mistake.’ that I personally don’t relate to.

I say that to my wife at least once a day :-) .
I think Scars is beautiful. I said this before: I chose to believe that this is from a teenager to a much older boyfriend. It makes it very powerful. I remember many girls in my High School involved with older guys who made them feel unworthy.
The father-child relationship is a good interpretation, but to me, the vibe of the song is more romantic than familial.

  • LoveDaRocker

    “A little scaaars action” LOL.
The cadence seems lower than in the album to me. Not a critique, just an observation.

  • BootStar

Oh, holy hell, that Bieber kid did more to rejuvenate Chris Brown’s career than any mea culpa could ever do. Hat’s off to the CB publicist who thought of that! Now all they need is for it to go viral on YouTube. Yikes. (Poor Jordin.)

  • AlliB

    Absolutely fabulous!

And Bieber, he made YouTube video’s? Covers? Did he sing along with the original music, certainly he didn’t sing them himself? ‘Cause otherwise, big huh?

  • LoveDaRocker

After so many comments, I checked that Jordin/Justin thing. Holy crap! That kid can’t sing! If that kid auditoned for Idol, he wouldn’t even get to the panel! Well, maybe to make fun of.
And the portions I heard before turning it off did not even seem that difficult. Good thing I have Allison’s CD on my computer. I was able to immediately soothe my near-bleeding ears.

  • JohnM

LoveDaRocker: Credit where credit is due. I think Taylor is an amazing talent. [...] Unfair to associate her with those others.

(Donning flame-retardant underwear) Unfair to associate Nick Jonas with any of those others. While his usual singing style annoys me (he can sing much better than that), he’s a talented musician who’s been performing professionally since he was about 7 and who actually can play guitar, drums, and piano live, and is a decent writer too. I really hope he’s able to move past the Disney stereotype with which he’s been saddled.

  • allisonfanahtic

OMG, I love love laaaave it!! The Rocker never disappoints!! This song is great on the album, but it’s even better live!! How is that possible?!!?

  • JohnM

allisonfanahtic: This song is great on the album, but it’s even better live!! How is that possible?!!?

Because everything she does live is better than studio. That’s just the way she rolls. :-)

  • jordison

I am absolutely a 100 % devoted Allison fan. The girl is insanely talented, and I am constantly amazed at her performances.

I won’t bring up that she’s just 17- that’s getting old. How about this instead – she’s in the eleventh grade. Eleventh grade? I remember when my kid was in the eleventh grade – Allison is just unreal.

However, just want to say a little something about Jordin Sparks. I also feel that this Bieber guy sucked. I feel sorry that Jordin had to sing that duet with him, for a number of reasons. First of all – when is she going to be able to stop singing duets of No Air with every male vocalist (term used loosely) who comes along? Jordin is way better than No Air, Tattoo, Battlefield, and all the other poppy stuff that she is stuck with. The Jordin that I appreciate is the one who can hold her own in an unrehearsed duet with Josh Groban, sing country with Martina McBride, and sings a mean national anthem. I look forward to the time when she can start singing ballads instead of poppy crap.

Further, Jordin is really ill right now. She is fighting a very bad cough, on antibiotics, and was freezing to death last night in a hotel room with a leaky roof. I hope she doesn’t get pneumonia. On top of all of this, she is just recovering from a recent appendectomy.

    http://twitpic.com/t28mw

Anyway, I like Jordin and hope people don’t look down on her for this performance.

But still – Allison is from another planet!

  • Rub

But still ‘“ Allison is from another planet

    ha, no doubt.
    Planet rock.

    jordison: I won’t bring up that she’s just 17- that’s getting old.

The subject is getting old, or 17 is?? :-D

That’s why I was worried about what Jive would do to Allison, looking at what they did to Jordin and Archie. What a relief it was to hear this album. I hope they let those other two escape from the pop crap, for the sake of their fans.

Anyway, I like Jordin and hope people don’t look down on her for this performance.

I certainly wouldn’t — I don’t look down on Sheryl Crow either for having to duet with The Evil Miley on that VH-1 divas show.

PRMari – Trouble is is more powerful/rock ballad.

I have to admit that I was a little slow to get on the Trouble Is bandwagon. But after seeing her AOL Session live version of that song, I am 100% completely on board. I think its her best live performance of any song so far. It just kills…

Not saying I want it to be the next single, though… I want it to be You Don’t Know Me – that song is hit material as far as I’m concerned.

  • jordison

Anyone interested in Allison, in case you missed it in Headlines 12/11 -

Access Hollywood review of Just Like You is one of the best yet. My only complaint – how can Trouble Is not be included in the list of best songs?

JohnM: Because everything she does live is better than studio. That’s just the way she rolls.

    I completely agree..she’s just amazing that way :D !

  • LoveDaRocker

Jordin: I liked her during her season (aka Melinda’s season), but didn’t really followed up on her, so I can’t say what would she do if given freedom to do more unique music.
S8 is a landmark season of Idol. Not only was Allison in it :-) , but the top three (I know Danny finished third) were allowed to do albums that were very “them”. Jordin probably did not enjoy such freedom (Blake has publicly said he didn’t).
Maybe whoever is managing Jordin now (don’t know if it is 19) allows her next album to be more her, whatever that is. But, be careful what you wish for (e.g., Kelly’s My December).
Trouble Is: I am an enthusiastic early adopter, and still believe it should be her next single. Its the 10th song in the album, and the first one I listen to everytime I get in the car.

    Me too.

alli lurker: Not saying I want [Trouble Is] to be the next single, though’ ¦

I don’t feel as though it should be the next single either — especially if FIBOU ends up failing. I’d like to see her get into people’s heads with a couple of more up-tempo songs first, so that she doesn’t get shoved too much into the ballad box. Get it? “Ballad box”? Oh, never mind…

I want it to be You Don’t Know Me ‘“ that song is hit material as far as I’m concerned.

No way do I see You Don’t Know Me being a single, which is a shame. I think it’d be a fantastic single — excellent chorus, sing-along-able, and great message — but she co-wrote it, and we can’t have debut AI artists releasing their own songs as singles, now can we — that’s reserved for the big names. :-(

I figure it’s gonna be Don’t Waste The Pretty next, then either Trouble Is or Scars, and that’s probably it, but if there were a fourth single, I don’t know — could be a bunch of ‘em. But I’m getting ahead of things here…

Just add ‘D’ and I think we’ve identified the singles from this album (excluding Friday):

    Trouble Is
    You Don’t Know Me
    Don’t Waste The Pretty
    D is For Dangerous

I love Beat Me Up, too, but I don’t know about a single.

ETA: I can hear the howls for Holiday already!!

  • LoveDaRocker

alli lurker: I don’t think you’ll hear many howls for Holiday. I have said many times that its among my 3 favorites, but I also recognize the Dilana situation. Besides, it’s too hard for Top 40, I think.
    I like your list.
D has a Bond-movie vibe (I know, not an original observation). Is also a bit funky. I like it a lot.

  • jordison

Anybody who isn’t familiar with Allison’s band, or who needs an excuse to listen to Holiday, here is a new video put together by one of Allison’s fans:

Yeah, D is for Different, I think it will stand out, get people’s attention.

  • casey718

I love Jordin, but that ‘No Air’ performance was all kinds of wrong. She kept trying to sing close to him (ala her past performances with CB) but that just magnified how freaking tiny he is. And his voice..WTF? Well, he does have swagger, which the tweens love, I guess.

As for Allison, a comparison can be made to Lesley Roy, a pop/rocker-ish young talent also signed to Jive (she toured with Archie this year). She had a couple of moderate hits (I’m Going, I’m gone and Unbeautiful) from her album but has yet to really break into the mainstream. IMO Allison has a better voice (and better songs) and the AI exposure, so I’m hoping she can have better luck than Lesley. Radioplay is key, and unfortunately talent isn’t always an indicator of who gets the lucky draw. I like Don’t Waste the Pretty as the next single, which is loads more memorable than FIBOU.

  • JohnM

casey718: As for Allison, a comparison can be made to Lesley Roy, a pop/rocker-ish young talent also signed to Jive (she toured with Archie this year).

Funny you bring her up, because Allison’s guitarist, David Immerman, was Lesley Roy’s guitarist before joining Allison’s band.

Radioplay is key, and unfortunately talent isn’t always an indicator of who gets the lucky draw.

Yeah, no kidding — I’d say talent often isn’t such an indicator.

That’s why I didn’t have any expectations about Allison making it very far on AI, or about her getting signed, or about her succeeding with her album. Well, two out of those three have already come true — now we just hope and see if she goes three-for-three.

  • LoveDaRocker

Don’t know if you guys noticed Lyndsey Parkers review of Kimberly Caldwell. She is using Allison as a frame of reference:

Her voice was stronger and bolder than I remember from her Idol days, and her songs were tough ‘n’ tender in that instantly clicky Kelly Clarkson-ish way (more like Kelly’s misunderstood, Benatarian third album, My December, with a little bit of Allison Iraheta-esque swagger thrown in’“all very good things, in my opinion).

    Fangirl …

  • JohnM

Yeah, that’s very cool that she’s already a reference point! Well, at least in the Idolsphere. Here’s hoping she’ll be a reference point for many people in years and decades to come. From “Benatarian” to “Irahetan”, perhaps??

  • alli lurker

JohnM – No way do I see You Don’t Know Me being a single, which is a shame.

I really wish you would stop saying that! Argh!! Plus it has big name co-writers.

ETA: Hey, where’d your post go?

ETA: I think YDKM would do the job Friday was supposed to do. It gets your attention and pulls you into that great chorus really fast. It also has that great ‘kick in’ feature like Pearl Jam’s Better Man. Love that. Then it has the OTT part with “I’m a mess”, etc. Great song!

Strangest version of Scars I have ever heard. :)

Seriously, how was it possible for her to put out those powerful beautiful sounds sitting in that position? She was leaning sideways – wouldn’t that constrict her air?

Also, as to the interviewer. Golly, she actually heard her single. What – she hadn’t listened to at least snippets of the album? And then, the same boring question, “What was it like to be on American Idol?” And, the Paula – Ellen question. Maybe someday the interviewers will get past that stuff.

At least nobody asks Adam about that stuff anymore. Maybe she needs to grab somebody’s crotch. :) (Please don’t take me seriously on this one)

I think I’ll go with Iracretin.

PRMari: No comments on that video I posted? What’s up? You guys are slipping.

Sheesh! Who’s the one with the short attention span? :-D

Sounded like a very good rendition (of course – duh) — too bad they didn’t give her a proper mic that wouldn’t have gotten overloaded. And yeah, I was thinking about her sitting position too — just lounging around on the couch, belting out a song, like any normal person would…

jordison: And then, the same boring question, ‘What was it like to be on American Idol?’ And, the Paula ‘“ Ellen question. Maybe someday the interviewers will get past that stuff.

Hey, at least she didn’t ask her about you-know-who. ;-)

PRMari – No comments on that video I posted? What’s up? You guys are slipping. BTW, you have been busy!

I didn’t realize it was Just Like You, or I would have looked sooner! Love that song acoustic…

Good interview, no ‘brain farts’ that I could detect. Horrible sound quality. The interviewer was pissing me off when she was singing… doing everything but paying attention. I guess that was the camera guy’s fault, though.

I wonder if they weren’t planning to play this song at all and Dave screwed up?

  • LoveDaRocker

Regarding the interviewer, outside Slezak, Cantiello, and Lyndey, unfortunately, Allison is still small enough that they won’t dig enough to ask good questions. BTW, did you hear Alexa Chung has been cancelled? No surprise there. She didn’t impress me one bit when Alli was there.

  • PRMari

Maybe she needs to grab somebody’s crotch.

Or release BMU (argghhh, couldn’t resist).

Or have an affair with a married man, I hear Tiger Woods is available for that ;)

All joking aside, maybe Beat me up is there precisely for that as a shocking single later on.

Yeah, I was kinda disturbed by the appearance that was created there, but to be fair, she may have been prepping for what she needed to do when the song was done. So I’m not going to hold it against her.

No, I don’t think so. There was a cut in the video just before they started, so I suspect that they actually did Scars and then JLY, and this was edited to just include JLY — why they would do that, I couldn’t speculate…

Another argument for You Don’t Know Me as a single:

I think its the best bet on the album for an ‘all ages’ song. Its got that insecure part that younger girls understand and the empowerment message that older people appreciate.

Okay, I can stop talking about it now!

okay, so after all the comments on the jordin/justin duet i decided to check it out… hmm.. i think Jordin was good! it’s impressive that she can sing that well when she’s sick, but Justin…umm i couldn’t understand half of the words he sang. He sounded like he was just kinda yelling the whole time and not really singing. it was just kinda bad…. plus it was a little disturbing between a 20yo (i don’t know her real age) Jordin and Justin 15yo, but looks like he’s 10…
Scars is so Freaking Beautiful! why couldn’t she have performed on the main stage instead of Justin?? she is tons better than him!

Just an FYI – I’m going to try very hard to stay off this site this weekend. If I spend any more time here I’m going to have to get a sponsor. Maybe that annoying elf ad will sponsor me…

Oh my god, I just went back to try the Jordin/Justin link again (wasn’t working for me earlier), and it worked, and… oh, my ears! That kid cannot sing at all! I have no idea how Jordin was able to give the fine performance she did with that out-of-tune cacophony feeding into her ears. Auto-Tune was invented for tone-deaf people like him. Auto-Tune is the work of the devil.

Or maybe it’s that walking cast on his leg that’s making him sing badly…

Last thing I want to say about this…

    First the JoBros, now this.

I think Jordin is stuck in No Air Purgatory. I can see her 20 years from now having sung No Air with over 1000 different partners. She will be singing a No Air duet with the latest 12 year old wonder who just hit the top of the charts. All the little girls in the audience will swoon over the little twit and think that this was his song. And Jordin will just have to keep smiling.

haha this just made me laugh! yeah his songs are really auto-tuned, and now i know why—he can’t sing!

I admit I haven’t read this whole thread. Allison is beyond fabulous. Everytime I click on a video link of her performing live, I am blown away. I am enjoying the hell out of her album, but her live performances take me to a different level. I can’t get either “Scars” or “Don’t Waste the Pretty” out of my head. After 5 years of watching AI, I have learned to temper my expectations for the careers of these kids…………..but this remarkable young woman is really exceptional. She was my favorite AI9, but her post-Idol performances really make me think she will break big eventually. I wish show-biz success wasn’t such a f777ing crapshoot.

that justin bieber guy did suck. Kinda feel for Jordin there.

I don’t get what makes some of these kids stars. many of them really don’t sing very well.
