Michael Slezak interviews his favorite Season 8 contestant, Allison Iraheta. They discuss: Talking back to Simon, staying true to herself, getting song selection help from Kris Allen and Adam Lambert and more:

  • Thea

    Allison is just awesome :clap_tb:

  • Tess

I just loves this girl! This is how I remember me and my contemporaries being when I was 17. Full of life, talking away, being blunt while respectful at the same time, being out going and sincere, not afraid to demonstrate how smart and “with it” they are.

Allison, song-writers, producers, interviewers, promoters, managers, and especially fans are going to love you, Babe.

  • reeboks1

she is SO likable. and she totally fucking “gets it”. i love that she gets it. she knows how idol is played and she comes off as a bright and funny young adult. great interview. can’t wait to see her at the finale.

  • http://randomizeme.wordpress.com arca

She truly is one of the most genuine 16/17 year olds I’ve seen on Idol – she is as far away from “pageanty” as possible. And I love that her two “big brothers” helped her out :-)

  • Cakenbake

I love how both Kris and Adam helped her out. They both deserve to be in the finals for being that sweet to Allison and helping her out.

    How sweet is that.

Imagine if Allison had done Beat It instead. It might have turned out to be a big disaster.

I remember when she did the song that Kris had chosen for her and that was one of her best. The song that Adam picked for her was great also.

I remember reading how Kris ran up to Allison and gave her a big hug after she performed a song. I wonder if it was that one?

  • KrisAllen1

I love Allison to death. How can Simon diss her personality? She’s so amazing.
She’s going places with her music.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

Allison is so adorable. I love her!

  • http://www.equinoxrpg.com dreamr

I miss her already! She so should’ve made it to the finale. :(

Oh well. We’ll see her on Wednesday and then, hopefully, it won’t be too long before we hear about her getting signed. I want my Allison album now! lol

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

I really wish she was going to have Kris’ place in the final. Even though I like Kris, I really think an Allison/Adam finale would have been one of the best AI had ever had.

Cannot wait to buy her music!

  • thedingoateyobaby

I loved Allison and you know, when I re listen to her “Cry Baby”, man that is pure dynamite. Looking back, if Adam were not in this thing, she would be my number one choice. She is amazing. She slayed that song.

  • 4got

She’s totally adorable and I’m looking forward to her career as a singer. Simon must meet some really artificial girls if he thought she had no personality.

  • RemusL

Smart, respectful, humble, self-aware, funny, goofy. I guess Simon doesn’t think any of those traits define a “likable” personality.

Allison, you were outstanding on Idol. I don’t know how you were able to hold your tongue for so long in the face of all the stupid crap thrown at you by the judges. Bet you didn’t realize going in that among the skills you’d be honing would be “the art of bus dodging”.

It’s too bad you weren’t able to last one more week. That would have been an amazing top 3. I look forward to seeing you on tour.

  • star

Such a great interview! I loved hearing her talk about her duet with Adam, and how it all came together. It’s one of my favorite moments of the season. :wub_tb:

She truly is one of the most genuine 16/17 year olds Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen on Idol – she is as far away from à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“pageantyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as possible.

Agreed. I love that about her!

  • JohnM

Hey Allison fans, her pre-Idol Youtube of Piece Of My Heart is available again! It was taken private a while back, but you can now see it again at:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM3Xj2FweOw&feature=related

Funny — when I watched it a couple of months ago, I didn’t notice how much younger she sounded. She has definitely improved, but her innate talent still showed back then.

As for the interview, I’m so glad that it shows just how articulate and thoughtful she really is.

I’d been wondering whether the arrangement of Hot Stuff was her own, and I was really glad to hear that it was — partly because it shows a good thought process, and I guess partly because I was hoping that she’d do just what she did with it in terms of a slow intro.

The best singer for me, ever.

  • puckstop

This girl is so full of life. I wish she could of made it to the finals too. It brought me to tears when she was let go and it brought me to tears to see her past performances in the vids. I will buy her album and I will remain a fan.

  • heathus

She seems like such a sweetheart. I really hope she’s able to make a career out of this, she deserves it.

  • galaxygrrl

    Allison is just awesome :clap_tb:

Exactly! I hope Allison reads this thread. I just can’t wait to buy her CD

  • annabelina

“It matches my hair” – SO CUTE! Love her. Want record.

  • silverwings

Loved the interview. Who has no personality again? She spills personability! :)

Sort of off-topic: I see that the kicked off finalists have gotten twitter accounts. Has Allision yet? (they all claim to be real so its hard to tell…)

  • shuey

Such a great interview! I was so mad they let her go.

  • cookcricket

IMO, Allison is going to be a star!!!!! I think there can be some real significance to her going out fourth on the night Chris Daughtry performed! I’m looking forward to your album Allison!

  • lavender1960

Watching Allison again reminds me what a dynamite talent she is!

She should have been final three for sure. I look forward to her post Idol career.

And yeah, she is one cool chick, smart and mature with mad skillz and loads of personality.

  • earthy

This girl is going places. Their is no denying she will be successful. Great interview.

  • KenzTK

I love this girl! For the first time I am so ecstatic to buy albums from more than 1 person in a season. Kris, Allison, and Adam will all have incredible albums and careers. I can’t wait to hear the music they put out.

  • jan

I love Allison. She is a star!!

  • GeminiDolly

I hope she puts out an album cuz im buying hers..and Adams of course.

  • Norwegiano

You know, there is no doubt in my mind that Allison belonged in the Top 3 over Danny. And it would have been interesting last week if Allison brought her mad skills to the stage for two songs as well. It could have been Allison in the final with Kris or Adam!

Seriously, we are talking major talent with Kris, Adam and Allison, and all three will be successful.

  • steve

Well now i know why all the mentors were amazed at her age.I think her parents should write a book (HOW TO RAISE A STAR).When she talks music shes 30 when she talks fun shes 17. :clap_tb: :clap_tb:

The look on Michael Slezak face, when she talked about beat it and anoop
    PRICELESS :eek_wp: :clap_tb:

I think its says alot about all of them helping each other out :thumbup_tb:

  • http://www.equinoxrpg.com dreamr

Sort of off-topic: I see that the kicked off finalists have gotten twitter accounts. Has Allision yet? (they all claim to be real so its hard to tellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦)

Depends on what usernames they are. Rickey posted a long list of “poser” accounts after Allison was eliminated. He met her and she said that they weren’t allowed to have twitter accounts.

  • St.Lucia

I really wish she was going to have Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ place in the final. Even though I like Kris, I really think an Allison/Adam finale would have been one of the best AI had ever had.

I agree. I love Kris and I’m glad he’s in the final versus the alternative. However, the magic that Adam and Allison had together I think would have made probably one of the most joyous finales ever because there is just an amazing chemistry between Allison and Adam.

I can’t wait to hear great things from Allison and maybe if there is a possibility of them doing something together after Idol

  • Lino

She is adorable. Simon is just stupid. I can’t wait for her album.

  • Chipmunk

She should have been in the finale with Adam!

  • Dlynne

Watching all of those amazing performances, one right after the other, I have to say that she seriously blows me away with her amazing talent. Add me to the list of people who think she is going to be incredibly successful.

    Besides that, she’s freakin’ adorable.

  • weareallinnocent

Great interview! Love how the Top 2 guys helped her. :-)

I remember hearing Papa Was a Rolling Stone and thinking, I think Adam’s influencing her. LOL I had no idea he’d helped her with that. Too cool.

I do miss her. She was my #2, and while I do adore Kris, he’s not the same in the #2 slot for me. :-( Oh well, we’ll see her again on Wednesday… and on tour…

  • lakhesis

    Group 2 rocks!
I love the fact that they are so considerate and helpful toward each other. Allison also showed a lot of improvement in her interview skills. She’s really adorable.

  • ppwars

Alli had top 3 in the bag. Simon knew it. Alli in the finals did not mesh with his Adam/Hokey scenario. Further, he realized that Alli was a threat for t2 and maybe a win. So he ramped up his attack.

Simon delivered the coup de grace after “Someone to Watch….” After her resplendent reprise, and an onstage display of diplomacy and wonderful personalty, he attacked her. She deserved the highest praise. Instead, after insults, Simon announced to her AND to a new, burgeoning audience that she “was in trouble.” Alli was struggling to hold back tears before she left stage.

That was it. She broke, nerves and spirit. Signs of this presented clearly, even after she was in top 2 results night. Preparation for Rock performance was as much worry and stress about how to handle Simon as about performing – her self-confidence and expectations of winning vanished.

Alli exhibited tremors during her performance of “Crying…”. Kara commented. Even so, her performance was magnificent, but basically received tepid, negative comments. After all, Alli had already risen beyond expectations, and the Adam/hokey final needed shoring up. Alli challenged Simon on stage, and rightfully. Didn’t garner new votes, tho.

Finally, after perhaps the finest, and certainly the most entertaining performance in AI history, Simon dismissed her brilliance in the act, and clearly implied that she on her on merits did not deserve to go higher; Adam had saved her if she did. He insulted Alli and again diminished her when he would not refer to her by name, uttering only “this one”. Yeah, that brought in none of those extra 25,000,000 votes.

Oh, another sign of the break: an (mild) expletive uttered on on stage results night. There are more symptoms, but they are clear. I say: Simon be damned! May he burn!

But for the above, Alli might have gone all the way. After all, Kris is vying for it. Alli got more votes than he Rat week. But for the above…? Well, at least a much better chance.

Her interview is splendid, and refutes any possible arguments of personality flaw. In fact, we see one of the most delightful, intelligent entertainers that exist.

She is a star, soon to super nova. Hopefully, Slezak will update us with new interviews periodically?

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Watched this last night! Loved it! Love her! I can’t wait to see her next week and on tour. I hope someone snaps her up! I would if I were a record exec!

  • erinnthered

    Love her!

Can’t wait to hear her album, and see her live. Rock on Lava Girl!

  • hermy

Awesome interview! I really like Allison I can’t wait to hear more from her.

  • http://justaddbooks.blogspot.com/ maree

First time poster, but I’ve been a blog lurker for a while. I never understood the whole no personality thing with Allison. She was so good, and unlike some OTHER contestants *coughDannycough* was always in tune. And that interview is so freaking adorable, it made me smile all the way through.
I’m okay with an Adam/Kris final, but an Adam/Allison final would have been made of cute overload.

  • Madcap Jester

    BEST IDOL CONTESTANT EVER.

TOTALLY DESERVES THE SPOT OVER KRIS AND DANNY AND MAYBE EVEN ADAM.

WEIRD, HOW RANDY NEVER BROUGHT UP THE FACT THAT SHE’S ONLY!SIXTEEN!!, ISN’T IT?

    DAMN YOU, TPTB!!

  • awilliams

Love this girl! She is smart, funny, self-effacing, in-touch with music and actually articulate in that fresh and lively 17-year-old way which is MORE THAN I CAN SAY FOR DANNY GOKEY! Danny was a mess in interviews and just didn’t know when to stop blathering. Sorry, not trying to be mean (as Simon would say) but that is just my observation.

Adam, Allison and Kris were my choice for top 3. Allison deserved to stay at least another week but oh well, one door closed and a thousand will open for this talented young woman.

Allison is way better than Jordan Sparks IMO. I can’t wait for some of rock’s divas to invite Allison to guest with them. Who would not want to help mentor this powerhouse? If I were an established singer I would be jumping up and down at the prospect.

Anyway a big THANK YOU to Michael Slezak for this interview.

  • mahrikka

What a great interview! She so deserved those flowers. :) She certainly has what it takes to make it.

  • lydia

For me she is the potential breakout star of AI8 regardless of who wins. I am seriously questioning the judges of this show. Simon can be a total idiot at times. He didn’t get Daughtry. He frequently calls rockstar performances indulgent until Adam Lambert becomes TCO. He ruined DC’s immaculate performance of TWIK at last years finale because he was peeved and didn’t “get it.” The live audience, Paula and Randy did until Simon kicked the rug out from under DC. He completely downplayed Allison’s and to some extent Kris’s talents, performances and trashed very likeable, normal people. Don’t get me started on Anoop who I didn’t even like that well. Yeah, I’m still pissed at Simon because he managed to early on portray DC as pompous, arrogant, indulgent, noncharismatic, etc–none of them at all reality, but it still stings. Since I was hyper-invested in DC, I thought I was just being oversensitive and vowed to watch this season as a more objective observer which I think I have mostly accomplished. I’ve had my favorites–Allison and to a lesser extent Kris, but haven’t visited fansites, looked up old music, etc. but I am still mad as hell at Simon’s lack of respect for Allison. Even when she tore it up with Adam on their great duet, he put all the credit on Adam not her. Simon, all successful singers do not have to be blond and beautiful (Carrie, Kelly P) or statuesque and cute (Jordin). I “got” Allison’s personality just fine through my tv set and she has more musicality in her little finger than most of the current crop of girls lighting up the pop charts and she’s only 17!!!!!

Sorry, it just felt good to get that off my chest. Thank god I’m not hyper-invested this year. Heh!

  • cookcricket

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m okay with an Adam/Kris final, but an Adam/Allison final would have been made of cute overload.

To me a Kris/Allison final would be cute, omg, overload. ;)

  • http://justaddbooks.blogspot.com/ maree

That would have been kittens, and puppies and rainbows all around, wouldn’t it? But I’m quietly pulling for Adam, from my tiny corner of the world in New Zealand.

  • Dr. Tracey

Love Allison, loved the interview. I can’t wait to see her on the finale and buy her CD when she makes one. She rocks.

  • Valentin432

    Idolatry rocks!
These guys are really passionate about AI, their interviews are 10 times more interesting than everybody elses combined.

Allison does have great prospects despite finishing fourth.
Can’t wait to see what she does in the future.

  • evanjane

My 12 year old daughter loved Allison right away. I was really impressed when she sang Alone. Although, she’s got terrific vocal ability and a distinct sound, I think she would have been cut if she’d sang Beat It. Her journey on Idol might have very well ended then and there as even with great song choices, she ended up in the bottom three quite a bit. I tip my hat to Kris. I think Michael Slezak was touched by Kris’s generousity and kindness. I certainly was when I heard it.

  • Chipmunk

    edit: knock off the baiting

  • Cakenbake

I think Michael Slezak was touched by Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s generousity and kindness.

Kris is generous and Kind? Wow, what we glean from watching 1minute performances via tv is amazing.

If you have been reading the recaps of the show by other EW writers would see that Kris has always been great to Allison. The 1st time she was in the bottom 3 the next week Allison blew it out of the water and Kris ran over to her, hugged her and picked her and was truly joyous about Allison’s performance that saved her.

Early on Paula and Kara said that Kris also has helped the other contestants practice their songs and accompanied them, which Simon was not pleased with.

I guess people have short memories.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I think a lot of the contestants helped each other out in various ways. It’s cool of Allison to give props when they are due, though.

Like Star, I also liked when she talked about her duet with Adam because that was a highlight for me, too. They had great chemistry together. I loved it when she came out all fierce. Then, he did, too, but he glanced over at her and a big grin crossed his face.

I also didn’t care for Simon’s comments after the duet, but that’s neither here or there now. Going at 4th is great. She gets the benefit of the press saying she got robbed and also a full press tour. The third place finisher gets some press, but the buzz is all about the top 2. I would have loved an Allison/Adam finale, but I think Kris really proved himself last week. It’s all good.

  • abbysee

I love Allison, I would have loved an Allison v. Adam final, but I am glad she has the chance to show her awesomeness now before the idol finale and all of the hooplah. She’s a genuine talent.

  • wellhesback

Allison is so appealing. I’m looking forward to youtubes of her from the tour (since I won’t be going this year). Also, the rumors have her duet-ing with Cyndi Lauper on the finale! that would great, I think.
Go Allison! have a great career!

  • TwigLA

FIrst, kudos to Slezak for having THE BEST exit interviews of any of the reporters. His questions are always interesting, well thought out, and different. He also treats all the idols with respect and is honest about what he has said about them in the past.

I loved this interview with Allison. She’s articulate, self-aware, honest, and fun. She also gives credit to others – it’s not all ME ME ME. Slezak even managed to suppress some of his fan-girly feelings toward her – some :)

THe girl is a huge talent and we will definitely be hearing from her. I wanted her to be Top 3 and would have been totally ok with her winning. There was only a slim chance of that with the show’s agenda this year. I was very irritated with the ‘she’s only 16′ throughout the show. To me it was a subliminal to not vote for her.

Regarding Kris getting the Motown week song for her, this backs up what I had heard before. I forget if it was Rickey Minor or Michael Orland who had said that Kris has extensive musical knowledge and helped many of them with song choice and arrangements. THis was particularly evident Michael Jackson week.

  • sillypraguer

What a great interview! I’m impressed that she was doing new songs (to her) so much of the time — I think it was Matt Giraud who said he only picked songs he knew because it’s too risky to do something he wasn’t familiar with. But Allison went for it and had some lovely moments. She knows how to interpret a song and has that incredible voice. Adam-Allison duet = one of the most fun idol performances ever!

  • ppwars

pj said: I hope someone snaps her up! I would if I were a record exec!

19~ has an option. I am almost positive (or afraid) 19 will exercise the option. She is the hottest new female entertainer in the USA (IMHO). AND, if 19~ exercises their option she, practically, will become their property.

IF the excerpts (Google) that I have seen are actual terms in the AI contract, she would be in bondage forever. At 17 (a minor), she has an extremely good chance of voiding the contract. I don’t believe any lawyer would let her sign such an instrument. The purported terms are so extreme that the contract, or parts, are, possibly, not enforceable. BUT, BIG money to attack such when an adult (didn’t K Clarkson go thru that recently).

If the contract were rescinded, she could negotiate better terms with 19. The value of 19′s contribution would possibly would be awarded, but I think that a court probably would not because of the abusive terms. Another label would probably be the better choice.

I understand 19~ exercises it’s options in short order, and possibly releases contestants that will not be picked up quickly. We will see. It’s pretty obvious that I would get her out of the contract (if terms are as I THINK).

She is only 17. She needs the best advice before binding. I’m positive 19 has considered the problem with minors, and it has taken every possible avenue to get around the problem. They may just take a chance that the issue won’t be brought up.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Eh, I’m fine if she signs with them as long as she gets good material and promotion.
