Alicia Keys Sings the National Anthem – Superbowl 2013 (VIDEO) (POLL)

Yeah, there is no doubt the Alicia Keys is singing live here as she accompanies herself on piano while she sings The National Anthem before the Superbowl 2013 face off between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s not a perfect vocal, but I appreciate her willingness to go out an that field and put it all out on the line. She certainly made the anthem her own.

Watch it below.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I thought that it was arranged kind of like a torch song, which I didn’t like for the NA. However, I give Alicia lots of brownie points for singing and playing live.

I thought it was Monday morning when it was over.

    But agree, I appreciate it.

Playing the piano while singing might have slowed it down but though she did good considering.

  • durbesque

    She’s no Zoanette.

  • steph6449

I thought it was a touching version, and although she did something different, it didn’t annoy me, lol.

  • tucker davis

    That’s funny!!!!!!!

The ciritics have their knives out.  Amazing that ONE song can either annoy or not annoy people.  Who cares who sings the song?  Who cares how it’s sung.  Franky, I wish there was another song that people would sing before each sports event.  When did it happen that the Star Spangled banner is sung every doggone time?

  • Nathan Moon

they should used Whitney Houston’s National Anthem song re-play every year rather than let sing someone….

  • tibitibis

A little jazzy but to me sounded good , different but pretty , so good job Alicia ! :)

  • Damien Roberts

I think she did okay, but if I’m being honest I don’t really think her voice is one that will carry that song the way people are used to it being carried.

  • Jenna

It was kind of slow (I don’t think the national anthem should ever be more than 2 minutes), and the extra ad-libbed line at the end was unnecessary, but I thought it was nice.

When she finished the lights on the stadium were already out

I actually really enjoyed this. It sounds different than what is traditionally done. Something happened to her voice because she used to sound much better!

It wasn’t terribly bad, but just not the way it should be sung.  It’s an anthem, not a dirge.

  • Kariann Hart

    Very pretty version!

  • Mariyas

I have high expectations but was let down yet still find it good but then that version should not be in a sports arena.

  • stargazed

She wanted to make it her own.   She can keep that version and I’ll take the old standby version that belongs to all of us.

  • alonzo7

Slowest NA ever-I fell asleep waiitng for it to be over-now Beyonce was amazing!!!

  • justmefornow

Very snooze worthy NA, but at least she remembered the words and kinda hit the notes.

    “She’s no Zoanette.”

Absolutely, some artists are born classy and carry themselves like stars, no matter the vocal-chops, AK is one of them.
The rendition was OK, a little bit too slow in the beginning, better on the second part but nice, classy one overall, nothing of a Broadway-singer feeling or a solemnly segment for the Macy’s parade one, just a thought.

It’s the National Anthem…it is not to be sung like a slow, sentimental, romantic song. Lol!  She is not the best-pitched singer so that part did not surprise me.

  • MichaelG (MikhailXO)

“kinda”…that’s accurate. Notes were easier to hit with her slower pace and key opt, me thinks. :)

MichaelG, Haven’t you seen this score for the SSB, Sporting Events Version???

It says ‘est play time 20 minutes’, right on the sheet music there, along with a few other directives.

  • standtotheright

It’s an anthem, not a dirge.

It’s a poem about a minor military battle grafted on top of an English drinking song. That some people have managed to make it a rousing anthem doesn’t mean that any other interpretations are invalid.  Jose Feliciano was kicked off the radio for doing a syncopated acoustic version in 1968 and was brought back to perform with honors years later, once people appreciated what he had done with it.

I thought it was fine. I still wish we had a different anthem.

  • lovetheusa1776

Aware of all that, but, as stated, simply prefer a different style.

  • standtotheright

I’d say “should” implies “obligation of the artist” rather than “preference of the listener.” That the latter might have very specific conditions is natural. That the former might is less so.

  • lovetheusa1776

It’s an opinion, not a diktat.

Deconstructing a fellow commenter’s opinion is way offtopic. Please stick to discussing the performance and please respect other’s opinions.

While it was pretty and I love Alicia Keys, it was so plodding that I found it annoying.

War has been the province of men for thousands of years.  That’s why I think the Anthem is better suited to the male voice.  It’s in the jeans…I mean genes.
