Alanis Morissette Hints At Talks With American Idol

In an interview with MIX 94.1, singer-songwriter, Alanis Morissette hints that she’s in talks with American Idol to join the judges’ panel:

“I’m in talks with somebody right now,” she said. “I can’t name any names, but I’m pretty excited at the thought of doing it more formally. Yep….I still have to investigate further, that’s all I can say.”

What do you think of Alanis joining the panel? She guest mentored with Adam Levine on The Voice last spring. She appeared on the Idol Season 9 finale to sing a duet with Crystal Bowersox.

She’d bring an interesting vibe to the panel, but going by her statement, it doesn’t sound like talks have gone farther than the preliminary stage, which would make her an unlikely candidate.  I would imagine at this point, FOX is very close to announcing the panel,

There are definitely worse people who Idol could pick– I think Alanis would prove to be interesting, but again, I’ve never seen her as a judge, so it’s hard to say how she’d do.

  • Not fit to print

Okay: Alanis, P Diddy, some country star and ? Unless Idol is rotating judges for the next round of auditions something is really off. OR, a lot of people are using the show’s apparent indecision to get themselves in the news.

In fairness to Alanis – she did say “in talks” and she didn’t say Idol. I think she’s a straight-shooter so must be something.

  • Zach

    I support this.

  • fuzzywuzzy

At this point, the list of people under consideration for an Idol judge position is getting longer than those who are not being considered. lol

  • vdawg

So how many judges are they having? Maybe have a panel for early rounds and a panel for live shows. Maybe rotating mentors, this is becoming ridiculous.

  • fuzzywuzzy

OT:  Is anyone else having problems “liking” posts? Since a couple of days ago, when I click on the “like” button, it appears to work, but then when I refresh the page, my “like” is not registered.

Sometimes my “like” is so slow, I leave.  I have more problems with this site than others, anyway, though, so suspect it is my computer.

  • buffynut2001

LOL! I think Idol/FOX must have had an open casting call for judges, at Dodger Stadium, and we just didn’t know it!! LMAO!!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Thanks. I don’t think that it’s my computer, since I have only had this problem the last couple of days.

Last night, one of the Hollywood gossip shows (Extra?) talked to Jamie Foxx and he said he was ‘talking’ to AI about becoming a judge!! It was just mentioned with other projects he was promoting. I agree that it’s a good way to get your name in the news right now…who’s going to deny it? But I do like Alanis!

  • Tess

Isn’t this turkey done yet…by the time the show starts it will be burned to a crisp.  One more name or one more article and I’ll slit my wrists (figuratively).  If someone thinks that they are building “hype” for the show with all these names ought to think again.  If anyone else is as bored with it as I am and NOW totally uninterested in the outcome this whole process may backfire more than it will help.

  • Anonymous

    I could handle that.

  • AlesheaDominique

Well hell, I think it would be easier to just write an article and mentioned who they aren’t talking to.

  • Eilonwy

Up side of Morissette as judge: she’s extremely unlikely to refer to female musicians as “pretty little dolls” (tm JLo) or talk as if only guys have “artistry.”

Down side: last approach to a U.S. radio hit was a decade ago, and that was #3 on HAC.

That up side is a major voting issue for me, possibly more so than recent hits.

If the idea is to exhaust Idol fans into limply accepting any judging panel we’re presented with, I’m there. Earlier in the week, I still had the gumption to launch my parody #WhyIShouldJudgeAmericanIdol campaign on Twitter. Now, I just want to crawl back under the covers and watch Batman movies.

They have to find two cheap judges.  Some of these prospects must be turning down poor offers.   Or Idol could be rotating judges—maybe to fit each others road schedules and prior commitments.   It is more humorous than anything—-no one is hanging on the edge of their seat.

  • s k

perhaps Randy and Mariah will be permanent judges and they will rotate out the third judge based on the theme for the week?

I actually kinda like that idea (even it’s in my own mind lol).

  • Larc

So Alanis is today’s Idol judge rumor.  Wonder who it will be tomorrow?

  • Goodie2

Might be ok but past her prime..Like idea of judges refkecting diff genres but also need a real music exec or a&r

  • Goodie2

Still wouldve loved pink & cher..even with mariah. ..3 big divas wpuld get lits of pub

  • Goodie2

They should test all candidates..Show them audition + performance videos & see how spontaneous, intelligent & witty they can be

  • Anonymous

I would love this to be true. For once there might be a judge I could watch (not to mention respect!) Outside of the judges for The Sing Off that has not happened as of yet for me.

Yes there seems to be an overabundance of talks happening, but perhaps – to prepare for Nigel’s prediction of one -year terrm judges – TPTB are lining up a couple of years worth of replacements. I would prefer that to going through all of this again next year. Then again, the judges seem to be the only thing that generates any real buzz for the show these days, especially between broadcast seasons.

  • Goodie2

Dont wanna hear more @ idol till xfactor is over

  • Garrett Clayman

please no!!! she would be the worst!!

  • dabney c

If Alanis is being considered, then they must be making it a 4 judge panel. Somehow, I doubt they’d allow a 2-woman and 1-man panel to fly. But … please, please no – not 4 judges, ugh. Last thing we need is to sit through more minutes of useless “critique”.

  • koshka

LOL… Hey MJ (or anyone else in this thread) been contacted for AI? I’m beginning to feel left out of the party. Seems like I’m the only one that didn’t get an invitation to the party.

  • Anonymous

I wonder if she could also be referring to the spring edition of The Voice. Weren’t they going to get a new panel for Spring?

  • Anonymous

I’m sure idol did there due diligence and contacted hundreds of music people just to get a grasp on who is available. Which I think is smart. I don’t think that means that they were all seriously considered.

  • No Thanks

I think at this point Idol must be THISCLOSE to locking down all of the deals for their judges.  All the rest of these reports are largely noise.

  • Madred

As I said before, more people will come forward and the person actually being considered is someone not on the radar right now. At this point, I would not be surprised if Paula comes back. Nigel has been wanting Paula back since he has been back on the show.

  • mmb

Steven and J-Lo weren’t announced until mid/late September two years ago…so it could be a while. They already got their up front week announcement with Mariah.  I bet the producers wouldn’t mind diverting some attention away from the Voice (altho Fox will probably not want attention diverted from x-factor)

  • No Thanks

Really?  I could have sworn it was August.  When did they do their big show announcement?

  • Eilonwy

Steven and J-Lo weren’t announced until mid/late September two years ago.

I can find news articles confirming JLo as the new judge at the very end of July 2010, like this one and this one from CNN. Steven Tyler said he was “probably” going to be on Idol in early August (here) and then it was widely confirmed on August 18/19, including in the LA Times.

The official “unveiling” of Lopez and Tyler wasn’t until September 22, but the deals were inked more than a month earlier than that and it was in the news.

  • No Thanks

OK, thanks.  So, yeah, I think deals will be inked by the end of August.  And the “big reveal” will be in September.

  • Anonymous

So how many judges are they having? Maybe have a panel for early rounds and a panel for live shows. Maybe rotating mentors, this is becoming ridiculous.

Hehe.  It’s been ridiculous for weeks now.

  • Pam

I’m not totally against the idea of Alanis but I agree with those who are getting increasingly annoyed at all the names that are being thrown out there from one day to the next.  I don’t think it will be too much longer before the panel will be announced anyway.

  • Anonymous

    I haven’t either. I am a little pissed. (lol)

  • Anonymous

I don’t think they want her back. They never contacted her to renew her contract, so she quit.

  • Anonymous

I think I will now ignore any idol judge news until they make an official choice. I still think a country male is in though.

  • blackberryharvest

Paula wasn’t a good judge and has proved NOT to be a ratings magnet.

  • Enough already!

WTH haven’t they approached?  The more I hear the more I am turning away from this show.

  • Anonymous

Are they talking to Jamie Foxx too?  Saw a short commercial for one of those entertainment news shows that mentioned he’s being talked to, also.  Who else?

  • luvadamlambert

haha im the only one still interested in judging rumors and i can live with that :)

  • steph6449

This is all so reminding me of something I read about choosing a vice presidential candidate recently.

Along the lines of having a huge set of disparate names circulating around in public so all sorts of constituencies might think their viewpoint is represented in the consideration. And in private, having a very small list of the contenders who are really serious for the requirements, lol.

In AI terms, seems like the publicly floating judge rumors have been checking off all musical niches except possibly classical and polka.

  • Anonymous

This is a good choice. She’d counter the “I love everyone . . . Have you seen my breasts?” message from Mariah.

  • Anonymous

If you have not been in talks for a judges position on Idol please raise your hand.

  • steph6449

Aww — I was trying to keep it a secret, lol ;)

  • Not fit to print

Well I haven’t heard from Idol BUT there have been a couple of hang-ups on my phone so they might be trying to get me….

Seriously, I just watched ET Canada (Alanis is Canadian) and when they asked her about Idol, she said she was in talks with “somebody”. If she was talking to Idol, I think she would be more non-commital: “Who knows? Maybe some day.”

That said, she would be an interesting choice. Don’t think she’d put up with anything from the other judges (not thinking of anyone specifically LOL!)

  • Not fit to print

Do you really need to hear that they’ve talked to anyone else? I heard the Jamie Fox rumour, too. Idol is starting to sound like the guy in high school who has half a dozen girls going at once. Eventually you screw up and it’s not pretty. Not good for the image, either. OTOH, maybe they are rotating judges in the next AI rounds.

If I was Idol, I would rule out any judge who gets too public about it but I’m not necessarily a nice person. Nigel….

  • Karen C

I’ll have to admit, I was called to be a judge on Idol.   They spoke to me for quite a while, and things looked good. Then I said my favorite winners were the WGWG, and they said they were looking for something different this year and hung up on me ;)

Seriously, I think Alanis might be a good judge, I liked when she mentored on the Voice and was on Idol with Crystal.  If they are going to have artists as judges it will be good to have some from different genres.
