In an interview with MIX 94.1, singer-songwriter, Alanis Morissette hints that she’s in talks with American Idol to join the judges’ panel:

“I’m in talks with somebody right now,” she said. “I can’t name any names, but I’m pretty excited at the thought of doing it more formally. Yep….I still have to investigate further, that’s all I can say.”

What do you think of Alanis joining the panel? She guest mentored with Adam Levine on The Voice last spring. She appeared on the Idol Season 9 finale to sing a duet with Crystal Bowersox.

She’d bring an interesting vibe to the panel, but going by her statement, it doesn’t sound like talks have gone farther than the preliminary stage, which would make her an unlikely candidate.  I would imagine at this point, FOX is very close to announcing the panel,

I’m sure idol did there due diligence and contacted hundreds of music people just to get a grasp on who is available. Which I think is smart. I don’t think that means that they were all seriously considered.

I think at this point Idol must be THISCLOSE to locking down all of the deals for their judges.  All the rest of these reports are largely noise.

As I said before, more people will come forward and the person actually being considered is someone not on the radar right now. At this point, I would not be surprised if Paula comes back. Nigel has been wanting Paula back since he has been back on the show.

Steven and J-Lo weren’t announced until mid/late September two years ago…so it could be a while. They already got their up front week announcement with Mariah.  I bet the producers wouldn’t mind diverting some attention away from the Voice (altho Fox will probably not want attention diverted from x-factor)

Really?  I could have sworn it was August.  When did they do their big show announcement?

Steven and J-Lo weren’t announced until mid/late September two years ago.

I can find news articles confirming JLo as the new judge at the very end of July 2010, like this one and this one from CNN. Steven Tyler said he was “probably” going to be on Idol in early August (here) and then it was widely confirmed on August 18/19, including in the LA Times.

The official “unveiling” of Lopez and Tyler wasn’t until September 22, but the deals were inked more than a month earlier than that and it was in the news.

OK, thanks.  So, yeah, I think deals will be inked by the end of August.  And the “big reveal” will be in September.

So how many judges are they having? Maybe have a panel for early rounds and a panel for live shows. Maybe rotating mentors, this is becoming ridiculous.

Hehe.  It’s been ridiculous for weeks now.

I’m not totally against the idea of Alanis but I agree with those who are getting increasingly annoyed at all the names that are being thrown out there from one day to the next.  I don’t think it will be too much longer before the panel will be announced anyway.

    I haven’t either. I am a little pissed. (lol)

I don’t think they want her back. They never contacted her to renew her contract, so she quit.

I think I will now ignore any idol judge news until they make an official choice. I still think a country male is in though.

  • blackberryharvest

Paula wasn’t a good judge and has proved NOT to be a ratings magnet.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

WTH haven’t they approached?  The more I hear the more I am turning away from this show.

Are they talking to Jamie Foxx too?  Saw a short commercial for one of those entertainment news shows that mentioned he’s being talked to, also.  Who else?

  • luvadamlambert

haha im the only one still interested in judging rumors and i can live with that :)

  • steph6449

This is all so reminding me of something I read about choosing a vice presidential candidate recently.

Along the lines of having a huge set of disparate names circulating around in public so all sorts of constituencies might think their viewpoint is represented in the consideration. And in private, having a very small list of the contenders who are really serious for the requirements, lol.

In AI terms, seems like the publicly floating judge rumors have been checking off all musical niches except possibly classical and polka.

This is a good choice. She’d counter the “I love everyone . . . Have you seen my breasts?” message from Mariah.

If you have not been in talks for a judges position on Idol please raise your hand.

  • steph6449

Aww — I was trying to keep it a secret, lol ;)

Well I haven’t heard from Idol BUT there have been a couple of hang-ups on my phone so they might be trying to get me….

Seriously, I just watched ET Canada (Alanis is Canadian) and when they asked her about Idol, she said she was in talks with “somebody”. If she was talking to Idol, I think she would be more non-commital: “Who knows? Maybe some day.”

That said, she would be an interesting choice. Don’t think she’d put up with anything from the other judges (not thinking of anyone specifically LOL!)

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

Do you really need to hear that they’ve talked to anyone else? I heard the Jamie Fox rumour, too. Idol is starting to sound like the guy in high school who has half a dozen girls going at once. Eventually you screw up and it’s not pretty. Not good for the image, either. OTOH, maybe they are rotating judges in the next AI rounds.

If I was Idol, I would rule out any judge who gets too public about it but I’m not necessarily a nice person. Nigel….

I’ll have to admit, I was called to be a judge on Idol.   They spoke to me for quite a while, and things looked good. Then I said my favorite winners were the WGWG, and they said they were looking for something different this year and hung up on me ;)

Seriously, I think Alanis might be a good judge, I liked when she mentored on the Voice and was on Idol with Crystal.  If they are going to have artists as judges it will be good to have some from different genres.
