UPDATE: Adam Shankman will also be co-producing the 2010 Oscars…

Adam Shankman is set to direct the film adaption of the Broadway play ‘Rock of Ages’

Via Variety:

Hairspray’ helmer Adam Shankman is signing on to direct and choreograph ‘Rock of Ages,’ the screen version of the Broadway musical for New Line Cinema.

The film will begin production by next summer, and will be released by Warner Bros. in 2011.

The musical’s creator, Chris D’Arienzo, scripted the movie adaptation. Carl Levin, Matt Weaver, Scott Prisand, Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot will produce, and Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver are executive producers.

Shankman will move from the 60s music of ‘Hairspray’ into the signature 80s rock anthems that drive ‘Rock of Ages.’ While it seems a stretch, Shankman reminds me that among the many videos he choreographed back in the day was the 1991 tune ‘Get the Funk Out’ by Extreme, one of those 80s big-hair bands. And his father was a music manager whose clients included Barry White, so Shankman feels he knows the world.

Oooh, Adam Shankman takes on 80′s hair bands. That should be good, cheesy fun. Constantine Maroulis, who plays the lead on Broadway is plotting his way into the film as we speak, I’m sure.

ETA: If I were to bet, the lead roles will go to actors who have already established film careers.

No this would be a perfect role for Adam Lambert. Am not even kidding.

  • mmb

shankman has already stated he wants to cast this with movie stars….maybe constantine will get a small role, but he will not be reprising his tony-nominated bway role…iirc adam auditioned for this show when it was first playing in la, but didn’t get a part….it is not so far fetched to think that there might be interest in him for the movie

  • Squirrely

Eh give it to Constantine. I want Adam to do Jesus Christ Superstar. I am secretly praying for a remake of Hair!

I think Shankman will probably cast it with established movie stars.

ETA: I doubt that the role is going to anybody who hasn’t proven themselves on the big screen.

Who do you suggest MJ – I’ve never seen the play so I don’t know who would fit.

There is one character I recall that HAS to be played by Jack Black, only from what I remember at the Tony Awards…y’all know who I’m talking about?

    Like Rickey?

The narrator type guy? I agree.

I didn’t see the remake of Hairspray either – was it any good? I loved the orginal and the remake didn’t appeal to me.

Who do you suggest MJ ‘“ I’ve never seen the play so I don’t know who would fit.

I haven’t seen the play, and I’m not as familiar with young Hollywood as I could be.

Also, and this is going to sound bad, but Constantine’s role is a romantic lead, and I don’t think Hollywood is ready, yet, to cast openly gay men in those types of roles.

  • Squirrely

Everytime I think of the Tony’s I keep picturing Brett Michels wipe out. I couldn’t watch the rest of the show after that.

    Constantines gay? …j/k

  • jms

Hmm. So if they’re going to cast with established stars, does that mean they dub the vocals? Or do they have to hire someone that can actually sing these songs too? If so, that’s going to be a really hard part to fill. Because while I can think of a few singers capable of doing this that also have the necessary looks (Constantine is not one, he doesn’t have that leading man face) I don’t think any of the current big screen actors have that kind of voice. Also while the singers have the voice and the look, they don’t necessarily act well.

    Constantines gay? ‘ ¦j/k

LOL that is how I read it too.

  • SashaB

Rupert Everett is openly gay and was cast in leading roles. But yeah, MJ, you’re right. I don’t think Adam’s big enough outside the Idol bubble to be cast.

  • unidentified

I saw this show. Constantine Maroulis is really good in it, fun show. Though he is probably to old to play the part in a movie, he’s in his thirties. They will most likely get some 20 something from High School Musical or such.

  • Squirrely

    Zac Efron type probably.

Rupert Everett will be the first one to tell you what a tough time he had getting cast in certain roles after he came out.

    Zac Efron type probably.

Yes. Or one of those twilight kids, if they can sing. lol.

I want Adam to do Jesus Christ Superstar

    He’s Jewish. oh the Irony.

I can maybe see Evan Rachel Wood as the lead female.

    Um…technically, so was Jesus.

I think Robert Whatshisface sings, doesn’t he?

to cast openly gay men in those types of roles.

Yup, the friggin hypocrisy. As long as they are in the closet they can be considered the heartthrob of the western world…but damn, let middle america know they are gay and it is all over.

Eww. That would certainly make it a movie I’d never see. I’m hoping for someone a little less oily and not so gross.

I love Shankman. Just needed to say that.

  • Susan M.

I think we’re proving “the America is not ready,” “Hollywood is not ready” tripe is patently lame and outdated. How often have we beat that poor horse to death during this whole season?

Are we not proving everyday by each new increment that it’s a staid concept that is so over. Voice, edge and charisma will be key in this casting ‘“ hopefully Shankman will cast the best person for the job. Newcomers are cast all the time and there is much more TV and film crossover these days. Chace Crawford was given the title lead in “Footloose” as a TV actor.

Zac Efron is a definite possibility, but I think he lacks edge; he is maturing quickly, so you never know.

Again, NPH plays a womanizer and is extremely popular and celebrated in the role.

Yeah, and LOL, Jesus and Judas (the role Adam aspires to play) were Jews.

  • sr4mjc

I’ll be seeing it front row on Oct 30th, I’ll try and picture who should be in it.

But as much as I love Adam, no… this part is kind of greasy and homely and a little vulnerable. Not Adam. He’s too purty, despite his ability to sing all these songs..

Just to play devil’s advocate… Jennifer Hudson got her role in the movie after playing it on Broadway and had no movie experience.

That said, I think casting Constantine is a lot different, being that there’s nothing remotely attractive about him to pull in audiences to the box office. Then again, I can’t see Zac Efron doing 80s hair metal. Hmmm.

  • Kaykohl

Jennifer Hudson got her role in the movie after playing it on Broadway and had no movie experience.

Jennifer hasn’t performed on Broadway, however she is in New York and in rehearsals with Syesha for the tour of Dreamgirls. I’m not sure if this production is going to run on Broadway or not.

Again, NPH plays a womanizer and is extremely popular and celebrated in the role.

I knew somebody would bring that up. And here’s my answer. The role NPH plays on “How I Met Your Mother” is a character role NOT a romantic lead.

Post a list of openly gay actors who have played romantic leads and I’ll shut up.

  • Grammie Kari

I am very impressed with Zac Efron and can see him as a romantic lead. I just wonder if he is too young?

Constantines gay? And I am not kidding. I like him, but have heard he is too old for the lead role.

Let’s see…Adam Shankman could cast Mya who is a great dancer and good singer from DWTS. Give a part to one of the popular dancers from SYTYCD. And give a part to Adam from American Idol. Then select one of the stars from Glee!

    sr4mjc,
I am not familiar with the musical, so please let us know if this is a possible casting!
