Since the American Idols Live tour ended last week, Adam Lambert has been busy in the studio, working on his album, due to be released 11/24.

Adam keeps his fans updated via Twitter:

On 9/20 @adamlambert twittered:

In Denver recording w Ryan Tedder!!! Get ready for your Sonic Lobotomy!

On 9/22

Denver Tedder sessions were major! Looking forward to working with the fantastic Dr Luke and Claude Kelly tommorow!

Adam cut a track called “Obsession” according to ex-OneRepbulic member, Jerrod Bettis @J_Skins. He also recorded songs Tedder co-wrote with country songwriter, Aimee Mayo (Kellie Pickler’s “I Wonder”) @AimeeMayo.

I know it sounds corny, but this album is a dream come true. I am lucky to be working with the BEST producers & writers in the world!

Get ready to shake yo asses!!! There be some beats a comin!

Adam is excited!

Ryan Tedder, of OneRepublic (“Apologize”) has written hits for Jordin Sparks (“Battlefield”) and Kelly Clarkson (“Already Gone”). Dr. Luke has also worked with Kelly (“Since U Been Gone”, “My Life Would Suck Without You”) and Britney Spears (Circus). Claude Kelly has worked with Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.

Deets for Idol releases are typically kept under wraps, but one tune “Strut”, Adam co-wrote with Kara DioGuardi, has been revealed by Rolling Stone.   Speculation is that “Strut” will be Adam’s first single off the album.

    It’s from this twitter, MJ.

    http://twitter.com/J_SKINS

His name is Jerrod Bettis, and he used to be a member of OneRepublic.

And Adam recorded a song Aimee Mayo co-wrote with Ryan while in Denver too.

Her tweets are a weird hybrid of amusing and touching, lol.

One of the songs Adam worked on with Ryan Tedder was written by country songwriter Aimee Mayo:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aimee_Mayo

For the Idol fans, she wrote “I Wonder” for Kellie Pickler. And bunch of other major country hits.

Anyhoo, she’s been hilariously tweeting about Adam ALL SUMMER! She’s been on a prayer vigil trying to get Adam to record one of her songs and it finally happened! LOL!

  • girlygirl

So Adam is working with Ryan Tedder and Claude Kelly. Kris is working with Ryan Tedder and Claude Kelly. Adam, Allison and Kris are all working with Kevin Rudolf. Adam and Allison are both working with Max Martin.

Are there any other producers/writers that at least two of these three AI8 Idols are/have worked with, or is that it?

Also, do we know if Adam went to NY for these Dr. Luke/Claude Kelly sessions, or if they flew out to L.A.?

  • ljsmack

Happy Birthday, Squirrely. I think working on the album is more important than publicity right now. And when he and Kris are on every talk show imaginable, we’ll probably worry about over exposure and the OTT anticipation again.

And maybe we are swallows winging to Capistrano, but many of us have never been on the AI ride at all (speaking for myself) until Adam, so we are bound to be a little over wrought from time to time. I, for one, appreciate the chance to share no matter what. And Simon Fuller would be nuts not to manage Adam given their international hopes for him.

Hmm — good point about them all working with so many of the same producers/songwriters. You wouldn’t think their styles would lend themselves to that as much (well, except maybe a little of an Adam/Allison overlap).

My thinking is that if the Aimee Mayo song makes the cut, it will be a slower ballad-y type thing.

  • HoppersSkippersMiners

Sounds like another Lambama/Lamgaga from the other night. There would have been more tweets than that one.

Checked out Claude Kelly and Dr. Luke’s info and seems they are based out of NY, so maybe on a plane this morning, thus the early tweet about Kris’s single.

The discussion of Simon Fuller managing Adam was started in the Headlines thread. Shall we discuss that over here? I’m remembering a conversation Adam had at one of the AP’s with a woman from England. She asked Adam if he was going to be touring in England. He said something like probably next year. Then he said that Simon Fuller was working on that. So, that might have been our first clue as to Fuller personally managing Adam.

  • lucy

On confirmation of the drop date for an Adam single:

The FMQB radio industry web site lists 10/12, FWIW.

They also list Jordin, SOS, 9/29, and Jason C, Let’s Just Fall in Love Again, 10/5. No title for Adam. No date that I can see for Kris.

I always thought Simon Fuller was going to manage Adam anyway, when he was the one who confirmed Adam being signed to RCA/19E post-finale. Just the way that he gushed about it all made me think Adam was his new baby.

I think Aimee’s tweets are cute. There doesn’t seem to be any requirement to be professional on twitter… Has anyone read Ferras’ tweets? LOL That’s what Susan M. and I said last night! I have watched it over and over, and it helps to have imagery. Okay, it was fun to watch Kradam, and since it was linked to his song, I now enjoy his song.

I have been thinking about a double album, too. I doubt it, b/c Adam, etal will probably have an interesting array of songs that fit together in some way OR that showcase his talent best. Of course, any song (including Want) is fine w/ me (except IICHY, as previously noted)!

This thread is beating the headlines thread re: posters. It’s not a competition, I just thought that was kind of funny. And I don’t think mj has to monitor this thread, since it’s not about bashing the other Idols (in fact, I suspect a lot of Kradison love in here), it’s about chatting re: Adam.

so some people are excited that Simon Fuller will be managing Adam. I don’t know much abt him but I assume it’s a good thing?. compared to some other manager?,

who wld be considered a bad manager or which former idol had a bad manger so I understand what’s happening here. thanks.

  • anthrogeek

What was said back then? Has Fuller managed anyone else?

Someone with access to all their saved Adam links will have to answer this one, as I’m at work…. um, working… yeah, that’s it…. and all the goods are at home. I do recall getting the impression that Fuller reserves personal management for the relative few in whom he sees the most star potential, though I don’t recall the previous Idols he took on. Seemed at the time that both he and Adam were excited about it.

  • BestAI

Personally I think Lyndsey parker, Michael slezak and Jim cantiello have all been a bit unprofessional when dealing with their favs so I ‘ll give Aimee a pass. she’s not even a media person like the others.

At least Lynsey interviews everyone, and it seems many women act giddy around Adam (e.g., Laura Saltman). Slezak and Cantiello seem to limit their interviews to Kris. It does confirm that Cantiello is madly in love with Kris. Normally guys don’t act like that unless they’re ten years old.

  • http://mamadeb.livejournal.com mamadeb

Fuller has managed Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry. Adam said that Fuller was arranging for his appearance in Britain.

If not for him, I would have stopped following all of the Idols as soon as the season ended, including Kris, like I have every previous year, but this year I now know an awful lot about ALL of them that I would never have known if it weren’t a side result of following Adam throughout the tour. I hope they’re appreciative of that!

  • sidewalkstory

Actually, that was openly acknowledged by Adam way back when he first signed his recording deal at the end of the season, wasn’t it?

I do remember that but there is a chain of command in any organization. Fuller personally managing Adam may be less managing and more of a “go to guy” for certain issues.

  • BestAI

Someone with access to all their saved Adam links will have to answer this one, as I’m at work’ ¦. um, working’ ¦ yeah, that’s it’ ¦. and all the goods are at home. I do recall getting the impression that Fuller reserves personal management for the relative few in whom he sees the most star potential, though I don’t recall the previous Idols he took on. Seemed at the time that both he and Adam were excited about it.

I’m surprised I didn’t know that info. I guess Fuller wanted to make sure no one would botch this up. No wonder Adam didn’t mind one iota that he didn’t win idol. Fuller must have told him that he will be well taken care of. Probably another reason Cowell said on numerous talk shows about Adam becoming an international star.

  • SparklesATL

Regarding Adams 2 dozen or so songs recorded, one of my favorite bands, The Kooks, put out the usual CD, but on their tour they sold a double CD, one of the released CD and one of the songs that didn’t make it.

Maybe that’s what Adam will do. (Crossing fingers)

Not true — Slezak interviewed all the Top 10 for Idolatry, and when he went to the show in Albany, he interviewed all the Idols who were made available for the press that day — the videos were all posted on EW.com

Same thing with Jim C — he has interviewed most of this year’s Idols. He came out to the L.A. tour stop to do just that…

Guardian article about Simon Fuller from last year:

  • girlygirl

I doubt Adam will release a double album as his debut. That would be a huge risk. Most double albums even from established acts have a lot of filler. It’s hard enough to come up with 12 songs that are strong enough to actually go on an album, let alone 24. And I think Adam was talking about how many songs they had had submitted to them — not how many of them were actually really good.

Better simply to release a kick-ass album with 12 songs where there are no real weak inks. Bonus tracks, etc. can come later.

  • BestAI

OK, for the first time I searched Simon Fuller. He manages quite a few people, not just singers. How the heck does he have time for that?

If Adam gets his album put out on iTunes as a library issue (like Pearl Jam and MUSE), we also some extras like a live video (maybe from the Tour?), sometimes a behind the scenes footage, lyrics, credits, background colors–stuff like that. I got it for $11.99 for Muse; you can get it for $9.99 for Pearl Jam (tho I am not going to buy PJ). It’s just included now: you don’t pay extra. I bet it will be available, since it was for Muse. *fingers crossed*

so I say use ‘em all and give us a double CD!

That is not going to happen. 19R does formula pop albums. That formula does not include double albums.

They’ll use a couple of bonus tracks and pawn off the rest to the next “artist” who needs to substitute his or he own vocals from an already recorded song for a turnkey track.

The double albums come when there is a deluxe edition re-issue with never before heard bonus material.

With Slezak, (and ftr, he predicted a Kradison final 3 way back when there were 11 people left! Pretty on the money with that one). He seemed to have a love-hate relationship with Adam. He LOVED TOMT, MW, made fun of him for OTT performances like PTFM. He also loved FG, and most of Adam’s later performances, and by the time we were at top 4, I think he was pretty fully behind Adam (definitely had huge respect for his talent), and he was mainly all for an Adison or Kradam finale. When it was Kradam, he said he loved them both.

I seriously think he is more in Kris’s corner, now, though, because he seems to go for the underdogs, and I’m reminded of how bent out of shape he got about the Jive vs. RCA press releases for Kris and Adam.

Since there’s been no change of management announcement, there was no reason to assume that Adam wasn’t with 19M. I suspect Adam, Kris, Allison and Danny are managed by Fuller’s company until we get news of the contrary. Fuller managed Blake and Jordin their first years, too.

Well, if the Beckhams (probably his #1 clients) want to make it big in the US, he’s not exactly gonna say no thanks, is he? I suspect the Beckhams’ go-big in the U.S. strategy is more about what the Beckhams want than it is about what Fuller wants.

The point/issue people are discussing is not whether 19 is managing them, but whether Simon Fuller is managing any of them personally, like he manages Daughtry, Carrie and David Cook. There is information that he is managing Adam personally, not sure how reliable that information is, but that’s what’s being discussed. I agree, until we hear differently, they are all being managed by 19.

  • Mary102

Actually he told Kris he voted for him, and he has been acting all fangirly with Kris (not anywhere as bad as Cantiello).

Yeah, Slezak got kinda weird right around/after the finale. I remember, as an Adam fan, that I LOVED Idolatry, and quite enjoyed his commentary, especially later in the season, wrt Adam – he gave him mad props about being talented, and even did the whole “if he doesn’t win I’m dying my hair Iraheta-pink” – he didn’t seem to be all in Kris’s corner (though he did enjoy Kris a lot) until after the finale. Or maybe that was just me. Oh, well. It’s done.

I do love me some Idolatry though :-)

Kids, I am seriously interested in going to NYC for GMA concert, but I live in Boston and don’t want to go alone (b/c I suck at things like that). If any Bostonians (or nearby ones) also plan to go (squirrely?!), please email me at @sssbbb@comcast.net I never do this sort of thing–I didn’t even go to Portland, ME–but this is ADAM and it would be an ADAM LUVFEST, so it’s different. I had seen the Tour in Boston and liked it, but since I was going for Kradam and Matt, and saw them, I thought, Okay, that was cool, but it was also $85, so that’s enough. But for a free ADAM ONLY concert w/ ADAM FANS, well, I can be persuaded… ;)

Okay, so anyway, is there ANY word on leakage on either single? OR on either single’s drop? There isn’t, is there?

ETA: I never saw Cantiello as being an Adam fan at all (but maybe I’m wrong). Slezak always said he *liked* Adam but his mom *loved* Adam and cried (like many of us did…no offense, Kris or fans) when he lost (and he did lose…that’s just a fact, none of this ‘we both won’ stuff). I am a big Slezak fan…not so much of Cantiello, b/c I am not sure if he’s a really up-front guy, as noted.

Since there’s been no change of management announcement, so there was no reason to assumer that Adam wasn’t with 19M. I suspect Adam, Kris, Allison and Danny are managed by Fuller’s company. Fuller managed Blake and Jordin their first years, too.

Actually no, Fuller did not personally manage Blake. Blake was with 19M but he had a different manager. I’m not sure about Jordin, though. But I do know that the other people SF ~personally~ manages currently are David Cook, Chris Daughtry, and Carrie Underwood.

Hey, I have to give props to Posh Spice. She sat there with her husband and took it for 12 minutes of a live TV interview with Ali G. Craziest celebrity interview ever:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P842Tmi6lrc

This was hysterical had me laughing out loud!!!

  • Adamme

It took both Slezak and Cantiello a while to come around. Slezak had no qualms of knocking Adam during the season, either openly or slyly. It wasn’t until Kris won and Adam was runner up that Slezak became nicer to Adam.

I don’t know when Slezak became nicer to Adam. He definitely didn’t like ROF, but he couldn’t say bad thing about Adam’s vocal ability because he knows there’s nothing to critic about it. And he understand why Adam has to stick his tongue when he hit high notes, because Adam B. Vary (another MTV reporter) talked to few of Vocal coaches and told him that’s a vocal technique that Adam did. He did not go ga ga over Adam but after top 10 if I’m not mistaken Slezak never and couldn’t say bad thing about Adam anymore. He even admitted to Kristen that he’s officially joining the Glambert bandwagon. Slezak always loves Allison. As far as I remembered he never crazy about Kris vocal but he complimented what Kris did to the songs. I remembered when he sat with Kristen, he said Kris might not have crazy voice like Allison or Adam, but he always had this ‘thing’ about Kris (he pointed his heart when he said this thing) and he was all smiling. And Kristen said I know you do and smiled.

FMQB mentions that an Adam RCA single will be released to radio Oct. 12. No further specification, though, and these things have a habit of sliding around, I’ve noticed.

Didn’t MJ confirm several days ago that the 12th was wrong, but that she did not yet know the correct date? I’m hoping it’s only wrong because the real date is sooner – there will be mass hysteria and anarchy with Adam fans running amok in the streets and setting overturned cars on fire if it gets pushed back any further than the 12th!

No it’s not just you. I didn’t get that slezak was that much of a kris fan until recently. it was always Allison this and that, save the rocker chic etc. so I was suprised when jim always mentioned slezak as competing with him for kris. hope Allison has not been overthrown. lol

Yeah, I think she did. Still, I think that this is the only generally credible publication that anyone has run across that lists a date — and the 12th is currently the date it lists. So the insider information that mj or others have gotten hasn’t yet percolated into print in the places you usually go to find the official word …. an example of the common dates-slipping-around thing, I suppose.

Not quite sure what you mean. FMQB (Friday Morning Quarterback) is a radio-industry magazine, and Z100 is a radio station, right?

I don’t know. I kind of think that, since we’ve heard zero up to now, and October 1 is actually next week, the release date is more likely to slip till after the 12th rather than before the 12th. Don’t know why I think that, really. Just a feeling. I guess based on the fact that the Oct. 12 date still shows up in the only semi-official online source that seems to have reported a date at all. If they were going to release it earlier than that to radio, I’d think they might want the radio stations to be warned in advance so they could plan to make a fuss or, like, play the song!

    Who knows, though.

FYI for people coming from out-of-town for GMA:

As I said, it is in the Times Sq studio and the number of people allowed inside will be very small.

If you get tickets, you have to be there by 6:30 am. No tickets? Plan on lining up at 4am for a chance to be one of the standby’s. When Adam appeared on Regis & Kelly, they were full and NOT ONE standby was taken. People had lined up from 4am and were turned away. Adam is even more popular now.

If you are willing to wait just to watch Adam through the glass, you will have to be in line early if you plan on being close enough to see anything. I watched a video of “Fame” from GMA and the people outside got to see the performers’ backs. Edit: There should be a jumbotron outside that broadcasts the show.

Our weather is crappy here in Nov. It’s usually cold, windy, and likely rainy. Be prepared to wait hours in this type of weather.

The GMA performance is 2 days before Thanksgiving. If you need to make travel plans, do them now.

OK then, just a little reality check.

Edit: tickets are free if you can get one.

  • greeneyedlady

Is there room in the padded playpen for one more Adam fan? Finally heard the Kris single with the Kradam vid- the visuals definitely help. And sweet of Adam to pimp Kris’s single on Twitter.
Thank Ra for my iPhone- now I can actually do work on my work computer while I check in here for any possible news tidbits about Adam or his single!

  • suebrody

Now I’m confused: Do you have to pay for tickets, or is that just to reserve tickets? As much as I love Adam, I’m not going all the way to NYC to watch his back. ;)

Squirrely, I can’t drive b/c 1) no car and 2) back issues) but I can *sit* in a car. :)

I’ll be totally bummed out if Adam’s single comes out *after* the 12th. OTOH, when did we know that Kris’s single was being released this past Monday? And what about TFM? Leakage would do for now…

If Simon Fuller manages Adam (and others, of course), how does that differ from co-managing or someone else managing? Is that the promotional side rather than the release-of-singles-and-album side?

Slezak was a Kris fan from top 13 night… he was a big proponent of Kris “subtle, pure voice”. in addition, he seemed to have a bit of man crush on him (the pore less skin still cracks me up, and he wore a shirt in kris’ honor during his interview). if you look at his recaps (not just the idolatry), Kris was always one of his top performers/best of the night. his order of preference was quite obvious…The Rocker, Kris and Adam in that order. Jim seemed to love Kris and Allison, like Adam and loved to poke fun at Danny (still!). LOL, how did this convo start …again?

Very much liked Bill Lamb’s (about.com) review of Kris’s song – well written. Important that he brought out the fact that the Idols can all actually sing. Only caveat last paragraph – insinuating that there’s some sort of challenge for Adam in Kris’s success. (As the occasionally perceptive Paula would say – apples and oranges.)

PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING WITH A HUGE GRAIN OF SALT:

So I belong to IMDB and I just thought I would put the question out there if anyone knew anything about the Soundtrack for 2012. Still trying to find out if this poster is reliable but this is one answer I got:

yes, the movie is gonna have a soundtrack, with mainly Harald Klosers music.
The song by Adam Lambert will be on his debut album and on the 2012 soundtrack.”Time for Miracles” will probably be released 2 – 3 weeks before the movie release

I am guessing that Slezak and Centiello are trying to kiss everybody’s butt since AI is their bread and butter and they want hits. You better believe they are going to gush equally as much for Adam and Allison when their singles pop. It’s just that Kris has the spotlight at the moment. You better believe they are going to be fangirlly. Otherwise Slezak will hear it from his mom. Cientello is a media/whore – he wants the attention. I don’t think they want Adam fans after them either. Who else has tweeted as much as they have. If Adam hits better than Kris, and I say if, Slezak and Centiello will be all over Adam leaving Kris in the dust.

    Hi All!
I’m a horrible, incorrigible, hidden in the darkest, dankest recesses lurker, and generally just ride the coattails of my wonderful neighbor, austinmidwife, around here, but all this talk of the Beckhams made me want to poke my little head out from its crack for a second.
That’s because in addition to loving Adam, I’ve also, for a long time, loved David Beckham, and it’s for similar reasons: they share two qualities–excellence at what they do, and open-mindedness.
I was initially a Becks fan because I’m a huge England football fan and he’s just plain an incredible footballer. But as I got to know more about him, I totally fell for him. True, he may not be the absolute brightest bulb in the chandelier, but in his own way he’s really personally impressive. He grew up in working-class London, came up in the macho-dickhead, heavily chauvanistic and certainly homophobic world of football, surrounded by macho men, he has every reason not to be particularly enlightened, and yet he happily wears skirts and make-up, says he’s proud to be a gay icon, and smilingly shrugs off all the homophobic quips directed his way. He’s also clearly a totally equal partner in his marriage, sharing child-rearing duties and promoting his wife’s career (“career”), and frankly, there are not that many men of whom that could be said even outside of the macho world of men’s professional sports. SO: major props to Becks, and to Posh, for that matter, for being so incredibly game, not to mention quick on her feet, in that Ali G. interview. What I love about BOTH Becks and Adam is because they are part of a brave new world in which, as Adam likes to say, sexuality is universal, and they just don’t give a crap about all the bullsh*t, and just go out there and have fun!
Okay, enough rambling. On another note, I just realized that while I live in Austin (obviously, next to my dear midwife), I’m actually gonna be in NYC!!! on Nov. 24th!!! So excited! Now I just have to see if I can drag my long-suffering partner, who really like Adam too, but, honestly, he thinks I’m kinda nuts, to Times Square at some ungodly hour!
Thanks for all your wonderfullnesses over the last few months. I’ve really loved them.

Maybe that’s what made them change the date. … if they changed the date to earlier. … or changed the date at all … or if October 12 was ever the planned date … etc.

When I think how the Kris song just kind of popped out of nowhere into a little leak and then a Z100 release (not that they’ve played it since, apparently …)… and FMQB, at least, *still* lists no official radio release date for Kris, I guess I don’t know what to expect with Adam’s. If you literally take the words from elephant1212, she said there would be a media blitz in 2 weeks. That puts it right around October 5th. Maybe they saw the handwriting on the wall and didn’t want to compete with MJ’s new song. Our MJ has already said 10/12 is not the date. So I’m looking at October 5th being the date. and from the preview:

I’m glad I’m not Adam Lambert — so many expectations hang on the glitter-kissed shoulders of last season’s “American Idol” breakout star. He’s promising a cornucopia of styles from rock to dance to pop on this debut album, but one thing’s for sure: with collaborators such as Max Martin, Ryan Tedder and Linda Perry, it should sound like gold. Also coming in November: debuts from Lambert’s “Idol” pals Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta.

    RCA, Nov. 24

Aww, glitter-kissed shoulders. and love that she says “it should sound like gold.”

  • dhunken

I know! The news of MJ’s single gave me a mini heart attack..

Well it goes without saying that MJ’s song will shoot to number 1 no matter how good/bad it maybe. So I guess I am hoping Adam’s single, which will be released close to MJ released date (whether before or after really does not matter), will have a good start (top 10) and then steadily climb to the top of the charts (Say take 3 or 4 weeks) just as MJ’s single runs its coarse at #1 and begins it’s slow descend down the music charts.

I could live with this scenario :-)

Midwifespal, glad you delurked. Interesting point about Beckham and his ability to thumb his nose at established mores, particularly in football. When I was over in Wales in June, I read about another footballer Christiano….last name escapes me. He is one of the top British players, that wears short shorts that exposes his rear, dons lots of makeup – is drop dead gorgeous, does what he chooses, parties hardy, loves his mom and doesn’t give a flip what other footballers think. He would take them on anytime. Gotta respect that.

Speaking of being ‘tarded. Here’s my dilemma: A cruise line is launching a brand-new ship and I have been invited on a media sneak preview. Because it’s sailing in Florida and I’m in SoCal, I thought, “I can’t go.” It’s only a two-dayer, but everything is paid for including cocktails (whoo hoo!). I didn’t realize they were going to fly me to Fla. until yesterday.

My two choices: Nov. 20-22 or Nov. 22-24. Well, my first thought is, “I can’t go the 24th, that’s when Adam’s CD drops!” The last time I flew was the exact DAY RS came out. That was torture.

I am also wary about going the 20th because I’m on the waiting list for tickets to the “Tonight Show” for that week figuring Adam will be doing his L.A. media rounds then, as he’ll be in N.Y. the following week. Also trying to work out Thanksgiving travel, etc.

How geeked out of me to rearrange my entire life around these events, but oh wells, it’s true. I’m leaning towards the 20th so I won’t get caught in holiday travel.

Yeah, kinda doubting that is accurate – we haven’t heard anything official, and every other site has it as “TBD”.

Completely forgot about the MJ song – crap. Oh, well. There will always be something getting in the way.

  • rowenaaine

I think Ann is just going by what the usual Idol debuts are called. It may be self-titled, but didn’t sound like that was how Adam was leaning. (Yes, I know it won’t be his decision, but I suppose he has a little input.)

  • unique28v

Completely forgot about the MJ song ‘“ crap. Oh, well. There will always be something getting in the way.

MJ is going to get in everyone’s way. lol That song and new album will do VERY well. Especially outside of the US of A. Adam can still make a nice showing though. Its just going to be a lot harder for him to be #1 for awhile, although Susan Boyle and Little Wayne is going to be stiff competition for Adam too.

  • dhunken

Completely forgot about the MJ song ‘“ crap. Oh, well. There will always be something getting in the way.

So True….I decided if Adam reaches number 2 with his song and the only song doing better is MJ’s then for me (for You) he topped the charts. Just saying….

  • mandabutter

    “Oh.Sh!t.

They BETTER get Adam’s single out BEFORE this. Give a chance to gain some traction before everyone goes nuts for the Michael Jackson song.”

    - I think Adam’s song will be right behind MJackson’s in sales in the initial days (if they’re released within the same week). And only cuz of MJ’s death, sentimental factor. MJ will probably not get any radioplay past its premiere. This is my opinion. I’m not worried about overhwhelming media coverage either and that it may diminish Adam.

I think Adam will fans will speak up, request what they wanna hear. And shows want ratings, so they’ll promote him. And just about everyone will say in the long run that MJ music can never be what it was in the 80s or early 90s. The AEG movie thing will probably be big just cuz people are curious about what he looked like in his final weeks & strength and skill.

  • hwc

They BETTER get Adam’s single out BEFORE this. Give a chance to gain some traction before everyone goes nuts for the Michael Jackson song.

Welcome to the real world of Idols trying to move units.

Here’s how I’m gonna do the deal. I’m thinking the album will almost certainly be too pop for me, but I’ll probably like 2 or 3 songs well enough to put them in my iTunes 5-star rotation. If it’s more than that, then it’ll be a sweet bonus.

Sales? I’m thinking Adam should be able to sell 200,000 albums over the first year. If he does that, I’ll be happy. If he sells a few more, I’ll be excited for the kid.

It’s all an expectations game. There’s no percentage in setting the goalposts at some impossibly pie-in-the-sky place. I mean, after all, how big can a single be competing with Michael Jackson and a smash hit from the American Idol winner? There’s not much oxygen left in that room.

  • hwc

is my opinion. I’m not worried about overhwhelming media coverage either and that it may diminish Adam.

Wait ’til his father brings him back from the grave and books him on Leno. I fully expect there to be zero shame from the Jackson estate and family milking this in every conceivable way.

  • mandabutter

Haven’t read the whole thread, so sorry if this is repeating any others’ comments. Susan Boyle’s album comes out the same day. And the pre-order sales were impressive and will have Cowell and Sony backing so I’m expecting the promos will be huge. I certainly won’t be buying.

I’ll probably purchase about 7 of Adam’s just to make my small dent. ;)

  • suebrody

I don’t think Adam’s album will be self-titled. In one of his interviews, he said that the title depended on the tracks they chose. However, DAUGHTRY and David Cook as titles seemed to work out. ;) Why wouldn’t ppl want it to be self-titled?

Ann Powers was always a big Adam fan (unlike Cantiello), so I’m not surprised at her listing, just happy. And as far as Slezak goes, I liked his interview with Adam quite a bit. Of course he fantarded over Allison (it almost got ridiculous, and he still sneaks her in whenever he can, like in a pre-Idolatry video for S9); I think he did prefer Kris to Adam, but also thought Adam would win.

lucy: FMQB mentions that an Adam RCA single will be released to radio Oct. 12. No further specification, though, and these things have a habit of sliding around, I’ve noticed.

FMQB never listed a release date, that is the Mainstream Radio Add date. The Radio Add date is often it is after the release date.

9/15/09 – available online for listening
    9/21/09 – released
9/30/09 – goes for Urban radio adds

Yep. I was thinking that people were talking about the airplay date. … Probably because that’s the date that mostly interests me! …. Never mind — I’m obsessed with airplay… Comes with the territory of being an Elliott fan all these years. I’m not interested in when I can hear the song — I know I’ll hear it a million times. I’m interested in when radio is set to be playing it, so *other* people can hear it and then rush out to buy it, lol! … That will be less of a problem with Adam than it is with Elliott, though, I trust.

  • HoppersSkippersMiners

    Ok, ok…I’m back.

And, based on your urgings, after 4 months of complete avoidance, I have FINALLY listened to Adam’s studio version of “No Boundaries”

Verdict: 6.5/10 (Sorry, best I could do)

Honestly, the only thing that got my score that high was the first 50 seconds. The rest was – as someone earlier put it – 80′s power ballad, but not that great an 80′s power ballad.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but it just sounds so…unprepared. Like he *could* have put some decent phrasing in there and added some emotional layers, but instead ran out of time so just “sang the crap out of it” instead. Again, hindsight lets me say that (!!!) since we all know that was indeed the case. :-)

Weirdly enough, IMO, it seems like Adam could have made it a better song. Honestly, the lyrics aren’t THAT much cheesier than a lot of stuff out there. It just needed some “emotional grit” to push it past the intial words and into a realm where it seemed to mean something personal. (Think Kelly Clarkson singing the LIVE version of “A Moment Like This” when she was absolutely squeaking with pure happiness during the performance…and the cheesy words just completely disappeared to transform into a personal Kelly anthem).

Ergo, my “eh” reaction. I honestly think this COULD have been an 8/10 song – Kara et al lyrics or not. However, it just isn’t that good.

However, thanks to all who convinced me to actually listen to it. It wasn’t the complete sludgefest I thought. [HUGS] :-)

Very impressive…. I hope that the media brings attention to this achievement. This is amazing for both Adams, his fans and the children and teachers that this money will help. This gets out to the right media outlets and they acknowledge it, it would most likely bring new interest to Adam from people who may otherwise not have know about him. Michael Jackson? Who cares? It’s not like he’s up against the new Bob Dylan.

Side note: I was in eastern Europe this summer and was standing on the balcony where MJ stood and yelled out “Hello Budapest!” to the crowd below, oops it was not Budapest but Bucharest! The very young tour guide who told us this story was wearing a Bob Dylan tee shirt :)

Anyway, I may buy MJ’s single and I won’t feel disloyal to Adam at all because I’ll most definitely buy Adam’s entire CD, forthcoming music videos, etc. I’m glad MJ’s estate is doing well so the bills can get paid insuring a financial legacy for his beautiful children. I’m quite sure Adam would agree!

  • Q3

rowenaaine: Maybe he should just call it
    ADAM

I think that is more likely than Adam Lambert. But still think the title will be the name of a song from the album.

‘Sales? I’m thinking Adam should be able to sell 200,000 albums over the first year. If he does that, I’ll be happy. If he sells a few more, I’ll be excited for the kid.’

jpfan: I’ve heard of lowered expectations but those are kinda ridiculous. Even Blake Lewis sold around 350K or so his first year and he was a dismal flop. Unless you mean Adam will sell that many his first week.

If Adam sells 200K albums total, he’ll be the biggest flop in Idol runner up history ever. May Justin sold less, I’m no Idol historian.

There are few guarentees in life (or the music business), I think Adam will sell more than 200K album units. One indication is that Adam sold about 80,000 copies of his iTunes Season 8 Performances album. But to be the worst #2 ever, he would have to be lower than Justin Fuarini’s Jazz album. Just can’t see that happening.

With album sales plummeting so fast, I do not know if the measure of an artist success should be in single and album sales, I think it should actually be in total revenue — since concert receipts are where most of the money is now. And merchandise sales are increasing in importance rapidly.

That said, Idol #2′s don’t have a great sales track record:

    Justin Guarini: US sales 143,000
    Diana DeGarmo: US sales 168,000
    Blake Lewis: US sales 300,000
    Katharine McPhee: US sales 374,000
    Bo Bice: US sales 672,000
    David Archuleta: US sales 745,000
Clay Aiken: US sales 2.8 million

Taylor Hicks has the lowest selling winner’s album at US sales 704,000 — all other exceeded 1 million.
Clay is the only #2 to sell more than 1 million units and he actually outsold that year’s winner. And Chris Daughtry is the only other non-winner to sell more than 1 million units of his debut album.

  • Mary102

That said, Idol #2′s don’t have a great sales track record

Adam doesn’t count, IMO. He is not your typical Idol #2. I am not saying he will do better or worse than Kris. I am saying that you can’t measure his success in regards to the others who were runners-up, including Archie. The buzz for Adam is SO much higher (I believe) than any of the others, isn’t it?

CindyM: Does the $213,673 figure from Donorschoose.org include the > $12,000 that was contributed prior to the start of the fan challenge??

If not, it is over $250,000!!!

And that, boys and girls, ain’t peanuts. PARTICULARLY in this economy.

I’ll reiterate what I said a day or so ago. At first I was really happy because support for Adam’s charities indicated support for Adam. Right now, I’m just happy because both of these well-deserved charities are putting money where its needed. Adam was just the catalyst.

  • suebrody

Adam is reading Robbie’s biography. He mentioned it a couple of times but I wonder if he got past the first 25 pgs.

He last mentioned reading The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle, so I don’t know. I wonder if he meditates…I would guess yes.

They do say, for groups of 20 or more you can call a special number. Anyone interested? Get a group together? Not sure if it will work, but who knows’ ¦

You should easily be able to get 20. Count me in.

We can do some research, sidewalkstory, to see if it will get us anything. If they can confirm that a group of 20 could get in for Nov 24, I think we could easily make it work. I’ll call the number when I’m free today.

It does include the 12,000 (actually now 13,000) for the original fan challenge

If you look at this link the 9th group down says “Adam wants you to give to students in Lieu of gifts” is the original fan challenge.

Robbie and Adam are kindred spirits I see. I’m half expecting a scandalous love affair if ever they meet. LOL

Adam strikes me as a much calmer person than Robbie in his private life but maybe that is just because he is being careful and only shown that side. Adam is OTT as a performer and maybe even more so than Robbie but Robbie definetely seems more OTT privately.

    Agree?

If we look at the stats, in all honesty, it’s kinda all over the place. Sure, placing higher (and specifically winning), does lead to better sales, in general, especially for the short term. But if you break it down by season:

    S2 = 2nd place finisher did better
S3 = was that J. Hud season – and she finished, like, 7th?
    S5 = 4th place finisher did better
S7 = I consider both Archie and Cook, when you combine touring and sales, are both doing pretty well.

So, yeah, it’s kinda been a mixed bag, going all the way back to the beginning. Daughtry and J. Hud kinda proved that you can finish almost anywhere in the top 10 and be the biggest success of the season.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

[shrug] Not that personally excited about this new-found release.

Really? I’m very excited to hear a new song from MJ. Can’t wait to hear it.

The point of MJ’s release is not whether people buying MJ will exhaust their CD buying allowance, and not buy Adam. It’s that an MJ single will suck up a lot of radio play and media coverage. A song released the same week and the week following won’t stand a chance of exposure. And by the time MJ fever drops, there’ll be new and exciting singles dropping, as well as a 2 week backlog of singles that didn’t get the play they deserved.

So, yah. I hope Adam releases by the 5th at the latest.

It sounds like we’re all in for a treat in the coming weeks if the media appearances happen like some think. My dream: SNL, Ellen, and Oprah (I know that last one is strange, but Oprah likes an ott singer). Also, love the album title with just his first name. But that’s probably an overly enthusiastic fan talking. It should more likely be an artsy title, high brow.

There’s never been a contestant quite like Adam Lambert on “American Idol.” Actually, forget “Idol” ‘” there’s never been a major-label artist quite like Adam Lambert. So it’s understandable that “Idol” ‘” and music ‘” fans are clamoring for any and all tidbits they hear about his still-untitled RCA debut, which hits stores on November 24. On “Idol,” Lambert proved that he could rock just as loud as Axl Rose and deliver vocals as tender as Jeff Buckley, while on the “American Idols Live!” tour, the “rock gawd” turned David Bowie’s “Fame” into a playful, sexual romp.

Cantiello may be gaga over Kris, but I’ll take this. He’s definitely a believer in the power of the ADAM.

I’m probably low with my 200,000 estimate, but I don’t want to be accused of hyperbole in the Idol bubble again. My sense is that Adam comes off Idol in much the same way that Taylor Hicks did — a rabid fanbase and everyone else dislikes him for one reason or another.

Idols who are non-offensive, middle of the road seem to sell the best outside of the Idol bubble. I look for Allison and the kid who won to be the big sellers from Season 8. With the right promotion, Lambert could probably overcome the recession and match Blake Lewis’ sales. That wouldn’t suprise me. I just don’t want to set the goalposts that high and then be disappointed. Especially since he’s in uncharted water.

I dunno. I don’t know for sure he’ll light the world on fire but its hard to argue he won’t do at least moderately well, and he’ll have a great christmas season because he has the fanbase for it. RCA will push the hell out of his lead single so he should be straight just off that song’s run. Either way he should get to a second album. I don’t really see Adam flopping.

I think its hard to predict past that because every indicator we have is about the idol fanbase and the media, not the rest of the music buying public.

That said he has great producers and some great people behind him, so he has a good shot.

I thought that was a completely fair article by Jim C. he and Slezak are both Idoltards, just like the rest of us, and of course they have their favorites, and it has been obvious, but they have always given Adam a fair shake, in my eyes. I share his concern also that Adam maybe should have went out of the top 40 hitmaker box with this album, but like he said, as long as they bring their A-game, no complaints here.

You gotta wonder, since all these hitmakers have written for women, they HAVE to have stuff in their arsenal that they have been dying to give to a guy like Adam. He IS in a category by himself, that’s for sure.

ETA: I am sure Jim C. and Slezak were also a little butthurt that they never got the official interview when Adam came out too. Looks like Rolling Stone might have some kind of exclusive with him.

  • HoppersSkippersMiners

On the topic of MJ’s new song and its possible release on Adam’s single date:

HoppersSkippersMiners: [shrug] Not that personally excited about this new-found release.

Sunn: Really? I’m very excited to hear a new song from MJ. Can’t wait to hear it.

Not to go OT with MJ, but I just can’t get revved. And just so you know, I still have “Thriller” saved in my vinyl collection and I found a near-mint condition copy of Time at my parent’s house a while back where I had lovingly saved it from sometime in the 80′s (?) when MJ was 25 and they ran a huge cover story.

I really adored MJ back in the day, and that’s the problem. He just turned so damn wrong. I’m not even talking about kid allegations, etc. I’m talking about articles which mentioned him ghosting through hotel rooms wrapped up in his own fantasyland, barely looking out windows. But, at the same time, he wrote songs about world peace, etc etc etc. As time went on, he continued to strike me as so hypocritical. By a certain point, no matter what the music, I couldn’t listen anymore.

So that’s why I couldn’t care less about MJ music dropping. I am, however, reminded by the MJ reminescing though of why I’m weirdly glad that Adam hasn’t been sucessful until now. At 27, Adam has seemed to work out most of his demons – the partying, the experimentation (pick your category), and his issues with (yes) his sexuality, self-worth, and how he wants to present himself to others. Through whatever twists of fate, he bloomed at his own rate, in his own time, and subsequently IS grounded in reality.

Adam is charming, talented, and (I fervently hope) is ready to leapfrog to that point where he probably COULD have gone a number of years ago, if the opportunity had presented itself. However, honestly, would he have been as good as he is now? Had the drive? The ability to NOT self-destruct under pressure?

Don’t care about MJ anymore. DO care about Adam.

[grin] That said, yes I be truly pissed if the MJ hype takes one iota of hype away from Adam’s release!!!!

  • sr4mjc

Clearly Mr. Cantiello has been cruising MJ’s today…he is a news guy….he needs product to report…I don’t think he dislikes Adam — I just think he has a huge man-crush on Kris (and wants to hang out with him and be his BFF) but respects Adam’s talent

  • pjd

If they are floating Strut out to “select media”, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if Brian and Jim were NOT at the top of the list. One would assume that Adam’s publicity peeps are aware of less favorable stuff they have said at various times. Wasn’t Brian the push behind smellygate?

  • saga

I share his concern also that Adam maybe should have went out of the top 40 hitmaker box with this album,

Should he really? I think he needs to show his label that he is definetely commercial and I think the room he has had for bringing someone else in has been used for former friend (ferras, porter and such). It also seems like Aimee was able to snuggle her foot in.

I am a little worried about Tedder too. Read the article about him that was posted the other day. He talked about his own band and making songs for it, and not doing it in a formula way, but when working for others, it being very formulaic. I hope Adam can push these people a tiny little bit out of their comfort zone and inspire them to do something more than the standard hit formula song.

That Cantiello article is positive. Most people will be influenced by the first graf of any article.. they often quit reading before they get to the end– so that first graf is what really counts.

Cantiello strikes me as the kind of sports reporter for TV who is a hybrid of home team booster and journalist. In trying to be both he is good at neither. (well, okay, he’s really good at the Kris fan boy thing!)

  • BestAI

The other thing: “It doesn’t feel right to kvetch about who he is working with when I haven’t heard a single note of an Adam Lambert song yet.”

hwc–I understand where you’re coming from with Adam’s potential success. But…there really hasn’t been a Idol performer like Adam so I don’t use previous statistics for him. I really didn’t watch Idol before so do you know if any other Idol has gotten the ‘music community’ so positively behind them? I just think the entertainment communtiy is really embracing Adam. And the ‘media’ seem to want to mention his name whenever they get the opportunity. Maybe I’m wrong but I really think Adam is going to be HUGE.

A lot of folks who posted here way overestimated Taylor’s sales, so I can understand the reluctance to predict much for Adam.

The genre somebody is in coming off Idol makes a big difference, though.

Carrie and Kellie P (and even Bucky) show that, with pretty high sales in country going to even people who finished fairly low on Idol. And Daughtry fit into a pretty high-selling niche.

Taylor, however, simply doesn’t sing in a style that’s played much in *any* radio genre today or gets big sales for anyone.

Adam is going for pop. So that means he *can* get more radio play (a lot more, if he’s lucky) than Taylor ever could have possibly gotten on the luckiest day of his life, given the genre that Taylor performs in. And pop radio play certainly can drive sales, if not for albums, at least for singles. All these folks are really quite different from one another. But maybe Adam will sell like Jordin, if his stuff catches on at pop — hot sales on singles, not so hot on the album? I think that’s quite possible.

It’s all a matter of the alchemy between the individual and the time, though, I think. Hard to know what the world will embrace and what it won’t. I do think he’ll get more and better promotion than most of the other second-place finishers have been given, though. I think he’s a lot more likely to be Daughtried by his management and label rather than Dianaed or Justined, certainly.

  • Q3

That said, Idol #2′s don’t have a great sales track record

Adam doesn’t count, IMO. He is not your typical Idol #2. I am not saying he will do better or worse than Kris. I am saying that you can’t measure his success in regards to the others who were runners-up, including Archie. The buzz for Adam is SO much higher (I believe) than any of the others, isn’t it?

Disclaimer: Y’all know that I am a huge Adam fan — I guess that’s why I’m in the “special people’s room”.

But I agree complerely, there isn’t much typically “Idol” about Adam. And I would never use Idol history to predict what will happen with Adam. Sure Adam, like other past Idol finalists, has passionate fans, but there is a lot more going on than just Idol bubble fandom. Even the run-up to his album looks like nothing in past Idol history:

    - Featured song in a major motion picture – budget #4 alltime; global release at same time as debut Album. Song will be on a soundtrack album.

    - 2 singles will be released in month before album release — one from album and one from soundtrack album.

    - 1st Album wll be released in UK on 12/7/09 only 2 weeks after the NA release; international release of album planned rapidly.

    - GMA Fall concert to support album release — Last year only David Cook had a solo GMA Fall concert, this year both Kris is on 11/17 and Adam on 11/24.

    - Idol preformance of a song, Mad World, used to promote ABC’s FlashForward, the network’s hottest new primetime show.

    - Adam has unmatched level of post Idol buzz and newsmentions, highest for any Idol finalist or winner by far.

    - Adam’s album is on everyone’s Fall album preview list.

I like the Allen’s they are like a second family to Adam.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Hoppers, I understand how you feel, and accept it.
With me it’s a bit different. I only care about the art, the man or woman behind it don’t really concern me. I was never one to read tabloids, or watch entertainment programs – Lor what has Adam done to me? – because I really don’t care about anything my faves do or say outside their field of art.

I can expound and give examples of utter bastards living and dead who’ve produced work that I adore, but I wont. It doesn’t really matter.

You have your reasons for disliking mj, and I completely understand them.

  • Natasha

RCA has Adam’s single coming out the same day as Michael Jackson’s? They need to be taken to the nearest psych ward on one of those Britney Spears holds. Lmao.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

That Cantiello article is positive. Most people will be influenced by the first graf of any article.. they often quit reading before they get to the end’“ so that first graf is what really counts.

I took it as positive too. But, in Idol land, there’s black and white thinking–you’re either for us or against us, no room for criticism or for gray areas.

You gotta wonder, since all these hitmakers have written for women, they HAVE to have stuff in their arsenal that they have been dying to give to a guy like Adam. He IS in a category by himself, that’s for sure.

I think this is a good point! But, I think it’s the voice! If I was a songwriter or producer why wouldn’t I want to work with a 16 octave voice that can do almost anything!?!?!

  • CindyM

Kris and Adam’s Crazy duet is linked in AOL’s lunchtime lowdown today.

  • Susan M.

Clearly Mr. Cantiello has been cruising MJ’s today’ ¦he is a news guy’ ¦.he needs product to report’ ¦I don’t think he dislikes Adam ‘” I just think he has a huge man-crush on Kris (and wants to hang out with him and be his BFF) but respects Adam’s talent

Funny, I got that feeling too. Instead of “ripped from the headlines,” reading that piece was like “ripped from the threadlines” …

That being said, I thought Jim’s piece was nice, no backhanding really. I’m inclined to believe this marks moving past the competition into evaluating each artist for who they are, who they want to be (musically and performance-wise) and gauging their potential ‘“ like every other recording artist.

I do think that was a little naive (especially with someone so knowledgeable about 19) that he thought for a minute Adam would get free reign to use lesser-known talent.

…I would never use Idol history to predict what will happen with Adam. Sure Adam, like other past Idol finalists, has passionate fans, but there is a lot more going on than just Idol bubble fandom. Even the run-up to his album looks like nothing in past Idol history:

Q3, I love reading your posts, and this one really makes me smile. As I’ve said before, I’ve not followed Idol closely before but I do follow music and pop culture in general, and I’ve never heard this kind of anticipation about an Idol performer before. I do vaguely remember Clay’s buzz when he finished 2nd years ago, but even that pales to the level of industry support I’m seeing for Adam.

  • Bowie1

Q3–Great job listing points why Adam can’t be compared to previous Idols. I agree completely!

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

I think this is a good point! But, I think it’s the voice! If I was a songwriter or producer why wouldn’t I want to work with a 16 octave voice that can do almost anything!?!?!

Pretty sure you mean 16 steps.

  • 4evrmomof4

Q3 has really hit the nail on the head.

I watched every season, every episode from day 1. Bought an occasional album like Kelly’s, Carrie(good, even if you are a non-country fan like I am) David Cook, Taylor(yeah, yuk, it was drek), & I never voted before this season.

Clay received buzz, but never from industry insiders or heavyweights- he has a fine voice, but he was always going to be Adult Easy Listening.

AI has never had industry cred, it is an updated version of the tried & true talent shows of the past. The fact that industry insiders are weighing in, or even paying attention to when his album is released, is quite major.

  • Gabbi5

    ummmm. mj….spell check…

    it’s BRITNEY spears…one “T”. hahahaa

and frankly i don’t know how adam’s album is really going to do against lady gaga’s re-release and britney’s single collection…

But I agree complerely, there isn’t much typically ‘Idol’ about Adam. And I would never use Idol history to predict what will happen with Adam. Sure Adam, like other past Idol finalists, has passionate fans, but there is a lot more going on than just Idol bubble fandom.

Love the way of putting Adam outside the “Idol box”, to me the “outside” looks more like an “above”.
So Carrie, Kelly, Daughtry, Clay, Cook, Kris… are all in the same box looking up to Adam?

This is what all Idol contestants, winners or not have in common: they went to the show because they needed it (in the case of Adam it’s not even arguable since he was in LA for 5 years without getting a record contract) and they all were overhyped considering they are a bunch of karaoke singer without any original music out there.

Even the run-up to his album looks like nothing in past Idol history

Almost every year you could have an argument of the sort for instance last year for Cook:

-Best sales during Idol ever with a record breaking number of songs on the Billboard.

-Most number of votes received during the finale

-Biggest sales for an idol winning song.

-TOML played during the Olympic Games and in a Oprah show.

-Big promo tour with the first ever appearance of a fresh idol winner on SNL.

I am not even a big Cook expert and this list didn’t take too long to write.

  • bridgette12

Maybe I am living in some type of dreamworld, but I don’t doubt for a second this is going to be a very successful cd. If there is anything I have learned from watching Adam during the American Idol season and on tour, that he’s good at picking songs and then wowing us both on stage live and on itunes. This man knows who he is and is confident that he knows what we will like from him. It’s that confidence and bold performances that has enthralled fans across the United States and with the media. He’s not afraid to be over the top, but also that adorable boy who melt our hearts with his sense of humor and beautiful smile. Adam is one of a kind and I don’t doubt for a second he’s going to set a record for the number of Cd’s sold in one week for an American Idol contestant. I can’t wait for November to get here so I can buy my two copies of his music.

You can’t compare Adam to Cook because Cook was the winner and Adam was runnerup. The winners get more hype and more promotion; thus, hiking up show tunes sales. The winner gets promotion for coronation song. You can’t compare the rest because Adam’s album hasn’t been released yet. The last thing is the voting… you can’t compare that either because David is straight and Adam is gay.

  • garden gnome

First time poster, long time lurker.

You know I was a huge Chris Daughtry fan during S5 (not a internet warrior though, stayed clear of THAT). When Chris’s cd was released, the week of Black Friday, all of us fans wanted to make sure he did well. And he did, he sold 304,000 copies THE FIRST WEEK. Granted, it was Christmas shopping time and many of my friends received the CD that year, it was still a great showing.

Anyone saying Adam will sell 200,000 THE FIRST YEAR, is way, way off base. Cook has sold over a million and the only way a record company will keep an artist on the books, is sales that at least match this.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Adam approach Chris’s sales, adjusting for our rotten economy. Anyone that says we are recovering should come to Florida – we are dying here.

Lucy – ITA wrt comparing Adam and Taylor. My biggest problem with Taylor during his year really was that he wasn’t very current – I just couldn’t see where he’d fit in on the radio, or in genres, that were really selling a lot and making a lot of money. He was always more “old school” (kinda like Melinda Doolittle her year).

Adam, otoh, seems very much in the present, and definitely has a keen ear for current sounds, future trends, etc. He seems to fully embrace all of what’s hot in music right now (including mixing eclectic styles – which is all over the place on today’s airwaves.)

    Hey there, Valentin..
I didn’t see “outside” as meaning “above.”

I think outside the box is a valid evaluation… and to say that is in no way demeaning to the other Idols.

You are right about this: they went to Idol because they needed it. They all had a dream and had the guts to go for it. I admire all of them for that.

Q3 always love your insights – I agree

…there isn’t much typically ‘Idol’ about Adam. And I would never use Idol history to predict what will happen with Adam.

    - 2 singles will be released in month before album release
    - 1st Album wll be released in UK on 12/7/09 only 2 weeks after the NA release
    - GMA Fall concert to support album release
    - Idol preformance of a song, Mad World, used to promote ABC’s FlashForward
    - Adam has unmatched level of post Idol buzz
    - Adam’s album is on everyone’s Fall album preview list

I don’t think any of the other Idols ever got the pre-release that Adam has received. Adam was singled out in Rolling Stone as being a new cd release that they were anxious to hear. Major outlets all over the place are talking about the cd and I am sure tv will want him once a single is released. I could see a SNL skit involving the Rolling Stone cover…..but I digress…

I think that this hype could work either way. It is a hella pressure situation, isn’t it? Especially since 19 doesn’t have a wonderful track record of letting their performers “do their thing”. Hopefully, they are letting Adam have some say in what the final sounds are. He seems to have damn fine taste! But Adam is going to need to “wow” on a few of those songs to live up to what’s being said.

The DonorsChoose total just shot up another 10K or so (reappearance of TALC and the Lambskanks) which brings the total to 223K. If the 32K from Musicares are included, Adam’s fans have crossed the 250K mark in charitable donations! Impressive and way to go *round of applause*

  • Valentin432

You can’t compare Adam to Cook because Cook was the winner and Adam was runnerup. The winners get more hype and more promotion; thus, hiking up show tunes sales. The winner gets promotion for coronation song.

Q3 didn’t distinguish between winners and runner up, that’s what she wrote:

    Past idol history includes winners.

You can’t compare the rest because Adam’s album hasn’t been released yet.

All the events that I listed were before Cook released his album.

The last thing is the voting’ ¦ you can’t compare that either because David is straight and Adam is gay.

Reading your posts, I guess that you have a strong opinion about gay/lesbian descrimination, so I am not even going to try to argue about wheter or not there was a significant “anti gay” vote the day of the final.

  • BeckyMD

Hi everyone. escape from RL for a while. Do we have any new theories about 19 handling Adam or Adam’s future album sales?

Read Jim’s article and don’t think it’s backhanded. Surely his affection level in this cannot par the early one about Kris. But I like this one better b/c it sounds reasonable and people outside Adam special room can actually get some real information by reading it. I don’t need to know Jim’s or Slezsak’s relationship with Kris.

I like this special room. This morning I just read an article in CNBC about the different opinions in an expert panel discussing when the recession will end. Just like here, there are optimists, prudent optimists and pessimists. Of course we are discussing something that impacts our lives more directly than recession does, we are in the same position as they in predicting the future: we are waiting for more signs and hints.

Posted this in the headline thread but you all seem to hang in here, so here it goes. From the interview with Ryan Tedder … somehow this scares me. I think we need to be prepared for an album with lots of shit songs on.

One Republic is a completely different animal for me because I can’t sit down and write more obvious, straight-ahead lyrics with OneRepublic. That’s kind of the catch. We might do something musically has a vibe of some other influence. Lyrically, I can’t sit down and write the same lyrics I would write for Kelly Clarkson or Rihanna. I have to do something that’s my own personal take. Our lyrics are little bit more random. I don’t want to say esoteric. They’re not obvious. It’s the best way to put it. They’re not written like cookie-cutter, songwriter-for-hire kind of thing, which a lot of songs on the radio sound like. That’s how they’re written. They’re written by two or three people sitting in a room trying to write a pop hit. I approach OneRepublic completely differently. So there’s absolutely no songs on this album that were scrapped from other artists, nor are there any songs that didn’t make the album that have gone to other artists. I try to keep those two as separate as possible.

  • halfie

Taylor Hicks was on the cover of People Magazine as their most Eligible Batchelor. He was all over the TV, with wall to wall Ford commercials. He was featured on SNL skits. Had a solid fanbase and strong tour sales. Album bombed.

Excellent point. Early buzz doesn’t necessarily translate. As someone who watched the Idol finale last season (and a few other episodes) and was therefore familiar with Cook (and liked his voice), I can tell you that until I started following Idol this season, I had completely forgotten about the guy, despite the post-Idol buzz. He really hasn’t broken out of the Idol bubble yet. He’s not performing on the Grammys or major music award shows or playing big events. He’s not a tabloid fixture. I now know that I’d heard his singles on the radio from time to time, but I never realized it was him. He may have a successful career, but it’s completely under the radar.

I know we think Adam is “different,” but as much as we want to speculate about Adam’s buzz, I think it’s impossible because we are all so entrenched in it. We have *no* objectivity.

IMO, Adam will keep the buzz and succeed based on one criteria: Does he have good songs. Good songs will keep him on the radio and expose him to a wider audience. Good songs will entice casual fans to buy a concert ticket. Even with all of Adam’s talent and charm, if he puts out a bad single, it won’t get played. Adam will only rise to the level of fame we all wish for him and have lasting success if he has good songs.

I’m thinking it was recommended to be archived because when Adam fails, as the suggestor has often stated will happen, it will be around so that the many instances of ‘I told you so’ will have some substantive evidence to back it up the ridiculousness of the hyperbole. Just like someone wanted to find the archives for the Taylor Hicks success threads to quiet hwc down the other day. It’s always better to have archived evidence..lol.

Unless she has a major problem (which I think is why the season 5 comment sections were erased), all posts are archived.
You can go back and read about all that happened in season 6 and 7 for instance.
So all our OTT, pointless discussions will be saved for the next Mj crop of readers to point and laugh.

Q3: Even the run-up to his album looks like nothing in past Idol history

Valentin432: Almost every year you could have an argument of the sort for instance last year for Cook:

-Best sales during Idol ever with a record breaking number of songs on the Billboard.
-Most number of votes received during the finale
-Biggest sales for an idol winning song.
-TOML played during the Olympic Games and in a Oprah show.
-Big promo tour with the first ever appearance of a fresh idol winner on SNL.

My point was that there is no way to predict Adam’s future based on past Idol history — not that Adam was better than past Idol finalists — just different.

Part of the reason I believe that Adam is not typical is because there was a lot happening for Adam that is outside of the “Idol bubble” — that is, not done by 19 or done by Idol fans. Just look at promotional activities. For Adam the following major promotional activities were NOT set-up by 19:
    EW covers
    RS cover
    20/20 interview
Mad World used by ABC TV for FlashForward promos
    2012 feature song

And, although I will not predict sales of anything without hearing Adam’s new music, I will say there is the potential that he could do very, very well.

Regarding the comparison to Cook: A couple of the items listed above, may not be true:

    1. We don’t know if Cook got the most votes on Idol ever, Kris might have.

    2. We also don’t know the AI8 iTunes sales numbers so there is also no way to determine if Cook had “Best sales during Idol ever”. Plus, iTunes AI7 and AI8 are not comparable — sales time was different, AI8 had albums and so on. My bet is that Adam sold more iTunes $ than Cook because Adam sold about 80,000 digital albums and Cook didn’t have 1, and Adam sold far more videos than Cook.

TOML promo can’t be compared to Adam because it was the promo for the winner’s song and Adam didn’t win. And the SNL appearance was part of the album promotion which Adam hasn’t started yet.

Can we please stop all the prediction talk? We have no idea how Adam’s album’s is gonna sell because we haven’t heard the album yet.

    Returns to mantra.

Awww Sunn, it will be okay. I think most people are realistic that Adam’s album could go either way. I think he’s really talented, but there’s so much more than talent that is involved. In all honesty, if the success game were just about talent, Adam would have been signed long ago. However, for alot of reasons, he wasn’t. I think his unwillingness to hide who he is/was had a lot to do with that. I think his musical theater training probably hindered him too. A lot of people want more mellow, easy-going, familiar sounds rather than the in-your-face stuff that Adam cultivated through musical theater and Zodiac. I’m just hoping for a solid debut with the opportunity for more music in the future. If he’s a failure, I’ll still be looking for his music either independent or back in theater. I’m a fan and having heard his voice, I’ll seek it out in the future. My hope is that I won’t have to look too far. :)

All the hyperbole was for just an exercise in fun fan-wanking. The possibilities!!!!!!!!

I believe Season 5 comments aren’t archived because way back then, MJ used different blog software and the comments didn’t transfer. I was a participant in the “predictions” thread however. Let’s just say I was way off! LOL.

  • suebrody

Thanks, guys. (((( ))))) I wanna cry. She has been here for 10 years, has a 14 year old, single mom, no parents, no grandparents, one sibling, nicest person…tragic, really.

Anyway…What I saw Adam do was take a song each and every week and make it is his own. EVERY.SINGLE.WEEK (Okay, maybe not so much with MW, but then again he picked a somewhat obscure cover and brought Simon to his feet.) Who does that? No one does that. He garnered tremendous buzz during the competition, after the competition, on the Tour, and now. I would be floored (as well as devastated) if Adam didn’t do really well with this album. That said, I think where he will really shine (and maybe pick up huge record sales) is on his tour. We all know the visuals. I love his studio recordings, but it’s the performances I remember, and I can’t say that about any other Idol (I remember a few of Kris’s, Danny’s, Allison’s, and Matt’s, but not all of them; I remember EVERY SINGLE ONE OF ADAM’S, and not just b/c I watched them all multiple times. ;) ). He brought so much to every song, and then was so humble afterwards. That is who he is. And the combination of talent, charm, and performance skills is what will, IMO, make him, in the words of Paula, iconic.

So the album might not sell as well as Daughtry’s (even over lots of time), but he is going to be big. I predict that he will be as big as Carrie, Kelly, Cook, JHud, and Daughtry. I don’t know about Kris, but this isn’t about Kris. I do not like GaGa’s performances (at all), but a lot of people do, and that has helped boost sales of her album and sales, I am convinced. Adam will kick butt at every awards ceremony, whether or not he has been nominated (AMAs, please, to begin with?!), and he will be remembered because of this. I do not know if his album will be huge at first, as many artists/producers/writers/columnists predict, but I think it will after time. I think Adam is going to be an extremely successful career, and no one deserves it anymore than he does.

And I think the album will do really well, but I don’t want to get my hopes up *too* much, as to be devastated if not. I don’t doubt that it will be an extremely strong album; I hope album sales reflect this, but again, if not, the ADAM LAMBERT EXPERIENCE GLOBAL TOUR (c 2009) should boost them considerably.

    Oh, and hi, GG.

And no, I get *zilch* work done today. :)

    Q3, I’m with you.

Also..whoever posted this so far back I can’t remember:

The point of MJ’s release is not whether people buying MJ will exhaust their CD buying allowance, and not buy Adam. It’s that an MJ single will suck up a lot of radio play and media coverage. A song released the same week and the week following won’t stand a chance of exposure. And by the time MJ fever drops, there’ll be new and exciting singles dropping, as well as a 2 week backlog of singles that didn’t get the play they deserved.

    This too.

Sue, don’t be upset about the security escort out of the office. That’s pretty standard operating procedure these days. It doesn’t reflect on your friend at all. The company is obligated to insure that data/files/contacts aren’t taken when the person leaves. There is so much damage a scorned person can do when no one is watching. Trust me, you can’t predict what a person will do under these circumstances. In many IT jobs like I work, if you give your 2 weeks notice your accounts will be locked before you get back to your desk and you will be escorted out and paid for the 2 weeks.

hwc: Taylor Hicks was on the cover of People Magazine as their most Eligible Batchelor. He was all over the TV, with wall to wall Ford commercials. He was featured on SNL skits. Had a solid fanbase and strong tour sales. Album bombed.

I would caution you to not overlook the elephant in the living room. Nobody like Adam has ever successfully launched a music career. I would like to think that wouldn’t be an issue, but he is a very polarizing public figure.

There is NOTHING similar between Taylor and Adam except that Taylor has a lot of enthusiastic fans. Taylor’s original music wasn’t relevant and he mismanaged his opportunities.

Taylor’s album was late (December 12, 2006 release), included 3 songs from his pre-Idol album, didn’t have a single release to support it, didn’t have 19M promo support, and wasn’t good. And even with all that baggage sold over 700K. If Taylor has worked on his album before October, got it out on time and so on, he would have easily sold over 1 million.

I am confident that Adam will have a single out in October, his album will be released on 11/24/09, it will be released internationally, it will not contain his pre-Idol songs, and it will have 19M promo support. The ONLY wildcard left is what will be on this album and will it be any good.

And if the elephant in the room is that Adam is openly gay, I think that elephant is dead for enough people to make an album a hit — if it is good. If anything, it might help Adam because it will make his release more newsworthy.

  • dhunken

because Adam sold about 80,000 digital albums

I am glad you brought this up Q3…Now this was 80,000 for a album of covers. It is also significant to point out that this Album stayed on Itunes top 100 pop albums (never going below #70)the whole time it was available. (It was pulled as soon as the tour was over, at that time It was 54) The album had consistently sold. My take on this is as Adam was touring new fans discovered him and went and bought the Album. While 80,000 is no great shakes what it does indicate is Adam can have longevity on the charts. That his touring did bring new fans that became interested enough in him to purchase a album full of covers. Though this is small it does indicate that Adam does possess the ability for staying power just on his voice and Live show. Couple that with a halfway decent Album and songs and there is great potential and possibility for success. IMHO

  • Dallas

    Adam’s gay?

  • hwc

Who needs an archive. I believe I predicted a minimum 2 million units for Taylor’s CD. He had a solid opening week and that was it. His Idol fanbase bought the thing and, basically nobody else.

That’s pretty much what Blake and Cook have run into as well. The girl who won Season 6 got one group outside of Idol — tween/teen girls downloaded the heck out of her singles, but didn’t buy album unts.

The only people who expand their market coming off Idol are those who plug perfectly into an existing radio niche. Middle of the road bottle blonde commercial country. Middle of the road wallet chain commercial pop rawk. They could probably hit pay dirt with a 16 year old Disney radio pop tart, but they haven’t had that winner since (arguably) Kelly Clarkson was force fit into that mold. They tried with that McPhee chick, but she didn’t have a smidgeon of charisma.

Now this was 80,000 for a album of covers.

It’s one of the better albums in my iTunes collections. It’s a better album than 99% of the singers will ever record. I actually think that most Idol wannabee should stick to cover albums. Maybe half and half between the usual bad new songs and really great well-known covers. Why try to be anything else?

I mean seriously? Was Clay Aiken ever going to be anything but a cover crooner? Nothing wrong with that. There’s a market for it. Heck, I’d rather hear good covers of songs I like than the dreck that’s on most Idol albums.

2012 song having nothing to do with Sony producing both the movie and Adam’s album is really doubtfull. And yes I heard Adam’s interview just like I read Cook’s interview about LO being offered by Cornell when the story was slightly different.
The rest is not “unique” in the story of Idol, as you know it’s not the first an idol contestant got the RS cover and Daughtry got to promote Prison Break which was a much bigger show at the time than FF.

My point was that there is no way to predict Adam’s future based on past Idol history ‘” not that Adam was better than past Idol finalists ‘” just different.

And I still don’t see how Adam is “more unique” than Cook, Kelly, Hudson or Daughtry. To me, it looks a whole lot like the same hype year after year with a different fanbase arguing over “their” idol being different.

My main problem is that your basing all this “unique” talk when we have no original music from Adam (unless you count Want or his pre idol tracks, then i would strongly disagree), if he comes out of the gate with ground breaking music then why not, but it all seems very premature to me, knowing that 3/4 of the people he is working with are well known Idol related producers/songwritters.

Adam Album Release Anxiety ,that’s a new malady . But it’s curable with a new song, so all will be well.

Several have been hooked into watching AI because of Adam so it shows he has the potential to catch other non AI following consumers. Like me and my friends and family we are not into supporting everything American Idol – we listen to the music and if we like it we get it. Except for David Cook and Archuleta , we were not so aware of the other AI finalists and winners in past seasons. So we kind of checked them out as we were following Adam during the Season . We did not find anyone we really , really liked so we ended up not downloading anyone elses . The AI related music we own aside from all of Adam’s is only that of David Cook , Archuleta and Allison (Two of her songs ) and Kris ( one of his songs ) . And yes we got all of Adam’s music video and also two of Allison’s.

So really no worries for me here. I have decided to enjoy the rest of the days listening to Adam’s music , while I wait for his album. Cheers !
Well just think -As Long as Adam’s Music is Mine – all will be fine

As Long as You’re Mine- Adam

You’re using season 8 data when my point was about Cook pre album period, all my points were valid at that time and contributed to the hype for it. And for the sake of it, I still believe they are.

TOML promo can’t be compared to Adam because it was the promo for the winner’s song and Adam didn’t win. And the SNL appearance was part of the album promotion which Adam hasn’t started yet.

Well, you didn’t descriminate saying “Adam’s pre album promotion is unique in the history of non-winner contestants” but unique in Idol history.
I strongly disagree that TOML got the “normal” winner promo, it is the best selling Idol winner song and being played in the Olympics is not standard procedure.

Some UK fans including me, set up a US iTunes account, but I know many people who didn’t who were very disappointed that they couldn’t buy the album. The viewing figures for Idol weren’t bad either for a show that was not shown on a mainstream channel (rather a reality show channel), so it would have been justified for UK iTunes to have Adam’s and Kris’ albums available to buy.

    NoBo was available though.

  • sma11ie

I was just gonna lurk in this thread for context, but Cook was brought up so I’ll participate:

Valentin432: Almost every year you could have an argument of the sort for instance last year for Cook:

Q3: My point was that there is no way to predict Adam’s future based on past Idol history ‘” not that Adam was better than past Idol finalists ‘” just different.

I’d argue that every Idol contestant is different, and has the potential to chart a new trajectory not based on past Idol history… I agree with Valentin– everyone is unique until they’re not…

Regarding the comparison to Cook: A couple of the items listed above, may not be true:

    1. We don’t know if Cook got the most votes on Idol ever, Kris might have.

I guess we don’t really know with 100% certainty, but the evidence is strong that DC got the most votes ever. Ryan said the S8 finale had nearly 100 million votes, without mentioning any records being broken (Also S7 finale was in the 2010 Guiness book of World Records as the largest telephone vote ever) S7 had 97million, and DC got 56% of those (he won by 12 million). I don’t know that Kris won by over 12 million votes.

    2. We also don’t know the AI8 iTunes sales numbers so there is also no way to determine if Cook had ‘Best sales during Idol ever’ . Plus, iTunes AI7 and AI8 are not comparable ‘” sales time was different, AI8 had albums and so on. My bet is that Adam sold more iTunes $ than Cook because Adam sold about 80,000 digital albums and Cook didn’t have 1, and Adam sold far more videos than Cook.

Like you said, the two seasons aren’t that comparable since S8 had albums released at the end, which stayed on sale for months after the finale, while the S7 tunes were yanked the week after the finale, for whatever reason. So to compare Adam’s digital albums sales with DC’s isn’t that fair. But let’s say we do anyway– to say Adam’s 80K digital albums meant he made more iTunes $$ is I guess possible, but not necessarily true. I’ve seen some pretty compelling evidence and calculations that DC sold remarkably well during S7. iTunes rankings and popularity bars were leaked far more frequently in S7, and we know that DC had three Idol songs (Billie Jean, Always Be My Baby, and for whatever reason, Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing) hit #1 on all iTunes, and stick for most of the week, which, based on sales data at the time, meant well over 100K, at times over 200K for that week. And he often had several tunes in the top 10. This was not post-win. (Of course post-win, he sold a million downloads in one week– with several charting songs only available for 3 days that week. Chalk that up to post-win fever, but bottom line DC made a LOT of iTunes $$ that season). The couple of times that rankings did leak for S8, it seemed Kris and Adam were both doing well, but no one seemed near the top of the overall charts. Anyway, I’m not saying this to say DC is better than Adam, but rather to offer some perspective. Sure, I strongly believe that DC sold better than Adam or Kris on Idol, and would’ve continued to sell well had his covers remained for sale, BUT that means nothing in the real world, and Kris and Adam could easily outsell DC if the new music takes off. Fans had huge expectations of DC’s album sales based on his AI iTunes popularity, but his current album sales, while respectable, did not measure up.

TOML promo can’t be compared to Adam because it was the promo for the winner’s song and Adam didn’t win. And the SNL appearance was part of the album promotion which Adam hasn’t started yet.

TOML promo can’t be compared to Adam, but TOML is a song DC did on Idol, and its being played on Oprah and in the Olympics is comparable to Mad World being used for that new show, right?

Lastly you can argue that a lot of advantages DC had in votes/popularity on AI, etc. was due to the AI audience’ prejudice against Adam’s sexuality, but you can conversely argue a lot of the magazine covers and 20/20 interviews and general buzz Adam is getting now, is in part due to interest in his sexuality. So it goes both ways.

Anyway, my point is, good stuff that happened/is happening during the season, or over the summer tour for Adam, Cook, Kris, anyone doesn’t always translate to future success. That’s all I’m saying.

    1. Whatever Q3 has mentioned.
    2. This is arguable but I’d say his vocal ability both in terms of technique and versatility (dance, cabaret, musicals, alternative rock, glam rock, classic rock) is astounding; I have no experience with previous season’s AI contestants other than watching some Clay videos, but considering my favourite musical vocal tastes run more towards people like Jeff Buckley, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Matt Bellamy, I’d say he ranks among them for vocal uniqueness and technicality. Because this is entirely a subjective thing, as a sanity check, I think I’ve read enough comments from people who are actually in the industry that agree with this.
    3. You can’t deny that he’s set a precedent for being out of the idol box when all the buzz in entertainment programs and magazines simply allude to that fact. He’s not your cookie-cutter idol, whether you like it or not.

BTW, where did the 80,000 copies sold statistic come from? Curious to know because I never tracked any of the idol sales.

Oh and like dyg1 said, the idol album was not available internationally, else quite a few people I know would have definitely bought it.

Adam promised us and I still believe him, and in him. I refuse to go all doom and gloom until I have to, and I don’t expect to have to. So there.

  • jpfan

I don’t get the archiving references but back in the day I predicted Taylor would bomb. Look it up. And somewhere between Taylor Hicks and Daughtry is where I’d put Adam. One winner and one runner up.

I think Adam has potential to do great but also is polarizing so my crystal ball is kind of cloudy on him. I think old timers are just saying that none of that OMG, he’s the greatest thing since slided bread is new. And I wouldn’t pooh pooh Cook’s success at selling albums. Even though I was a wet blanket on him last season, selling 1.3 million albums is no easy feat these days.

And as someone who’s been here since S5, Adam does not have the biggest buzz of anyone off Idol. He’s gotten great reviews and has a devoted fanbase but his actual sales and radio play (so far) are just okay dawg.

I’ve said several times that Adam based on his performance was the best ever idol contestant, I just don’t get all this hype without any music to listen to.

Hype=a fans optimistically hopeful expectation. For many like myself Adam evoked a visceral connection when he preformed on AI. (Some say otherworldly) That no prior Idol did. I have watched American Idol religiously since season 1. I had very strong personal favorites. (Kelly, Kimberley Locke, Carrie, Daughtry, Carly, David and David) but none moved me and affected me the way Adam did. I am grateful for his singing makes me feel renewed and special. Maybe my hype can be a little much but I want the best for him for selfish reason .I want him to be around for a long time so I can again feel renewed, rejuvenated, and special each time he sings a new song. Don’t mean to upset anyone in the process.

Now there is the rub. Did Kris really win by a “landslide?” If he did, he could have gotten more votes than Cook although the total Season 8 finale vote was less than Season 7.

It really doesn’t matter, but it’s fun to talk stats while we pass the time. :)

^^^THIS!! I really haven’t seen many of GaGa’s performances, other than AI and a bit of the VMAs. But that is one point we’re really not addressing. GaGa and Katy Perry, who came out of NOWHERE in the past year and a half with a few catchy songs and a gimmick. Yet their both considered gold-plated stars and headliners in that short of time ‘“ off the success of one album (each).

Yes, their performance schtick helps, but who would have seen it or even heard of them unless they liked their very poppy songs that got great radio play? I watch/DVR a lot of talk shows, but I think I only saw a glimpse of GaGa on “Ellen” before seeing her on AI.
