The controversy over the release of pre-Idol material by Adam Lambert probably won’t stop until the album is released later this summer and without radio play or promotion, it quickly fades away.

The single “Want” is available now–I’m posting a link to it here for anybody who is interested in downloading it.

It’s a mediocre ballad, and the production is crap, but Adam, as always, sure sound pretty.

Official Statement from Adam LambertJUNE 22, 2009, 3:07 pm

As you may already have noticed, there is a new (old) track floating around that Adam sang vocals on. Here is Adam’s official statement:

Back in 2005 when I was a struggling artist, I was hired as a studio singer to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. I was broke at the time and this was my chance to make a few bucks, so I jumped at the opportunity to record for my first time in a professional studio.

The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on.

I’m thrilled to be working with some of today’s hottest songwriters and producers and can’t wait for people to hear what my music really sounds like.

    Message from Adam’s Father

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The real irony on those pre-Idol recordings ( the ones that arent the rough Citizen Vein demosà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ which I kind of like. Monte rocks!) is that a couple of the songs actually had potential but the songwriter/producers squelched Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s inputs on changes to the vocal phrasing and vocal arrangement, directing him to sing them straight and very restrained. They obviously intended to shop the songs not Adam. So they came out pretty schmaltzy adult contemporary and VERY un-Adam. I remember he was excited about getting paid for working in the studio but pretty frustrated about how those songs came out.
This was before Wicked. A paying gig was huge.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

  • abbysee

I am on the fence about it. Well I mean about purchasing it. Adams voice makes me want to buy it, so we will see. Will it climb iTunes?

  • lilbrusc102

I love Adam’s voice on it (of course!) but not even that would get me to buy such a badly-produced, mediocre song, even w/out the controversy.

  • lola

I respect those who will not buy it as I also respect who will buy it.

  • GeminiDolly

Well, Adam’s voice sounds beautiful, but the song sucks hairy donkey nutts. Im not buying. Ill just wait for the real music this fall.

  • AC

Crappy song. Ugly picture. Current Adam= me like.

  • isisdagmar

abbysee: just download it for free–there are tons of places that have it now. That way you get his vocals without giving the robber barons who put the song on itunes any money.

  • kijico3

Adam sounds gorgeous but will not buy it. (besides have already downloaded it without lining the pockets of the scumbags at HI FI )

No thanks. I’m perfectly willing to wait until his post-Idol stuff drops.

    1. I’ll be deleting any and all links to illegal download sites.

    2. No lecturing! No Finger wagging! Don’t tell posters what to do.

  • Zombini

I won’t buy it because I don’t want to be part of something that may harm him in case it gets radio play and becomes Adam’s signature song in the mind of some people.
May be it doesn’t matter, but may be it does and it’s not worth taking the risk, imo.

  • HotHotHot

Nope, I be saving my money for the real album. In this case, it’s the principle of the thing. Not giving my money to liars and cheats.

edit: Have an opinion on the song? Post it. But please do not question the motives of your fellow posters.

  • HotHotHot

  • liberty

HiFi is making profit by association to his new fame. It’s the way the business goes. If the label thought the music was sooo great they would have released it a long time ago. They make a couple of bucks, his new album comes out, and it all blows over. big deal.

If they were to put out an album with “Kiss and tell” “pop goes the camera” “oh my ra” etc… an all dance/electronica album i would totally buy it. But i like that shit. If i liked cheesy ballads, i would probably purchase “want”.

  • bridgeymah

There is no way HiFi would be releasing this if Adam wasn’t hot today. They are trying to cash in on something they had NOTHING to do with. Bad ethics and I hope karma takes care of them. For me won’t be touching the schmaltzy crap with a barge pole and am hoping if I ignore it it will quietly disappear… can’t wait for Adam’s REAL music.

  • RubySlippers

Is he making any money off this??
‘Cause I will gladly donate to his sparkly wardrobe fund.

  • AussieFan

Please nobody shoot me down in flames! :furious_tb:

But I think it will get airplay and I think it will be a hit! People who spent weeks saying how he screams all the time will hear this on the radio and be surprised it’s him, but love the voice. I think, even though its not a brilliant song, it will in fact win him new fans that maybe did not like him on idol!

But that is JMO so PLEASE don’t shout at me! :wub_tb:

  • GeminiDolly

^ Gimme some of that stuff you are on. ha ha

  • undercooked

Adam sounds great, but the song is too repetitive for me. I don’t like alot of ballads, so I will probably pass. I wish I knew if Adam was making anything off of this. That might sway me if there are some good songs on the pre-idol album. I just think if there were some great songs on there, RCA would have bought them.

Either way, I don’t think this hurts him. In fact, there are many, many people who enjoy this type of music…and it does show off his vocal ability.

  • twinkle

no shouting from me, AussieFan. although im not happy with HiFi’s sleazy approach im trying to be optimistic and think this might bring in a separate demographic of fans that may not have loved rock/electronic adam. and it won’t turn off the people that know the story and/or love anything he produces. and the people that will only want to hear rock/electronic adam will likely not like this but i think will judge his future music separately.

i wish i could draw a venn diagram of adam’s potential fanbase. but i think, aside from the shady game afoot, this has the potential to expand his market more than it will turn people off. plus it covers more of the musical demographics that fell in love with him on idol for different performances. the strictly “ROFers” and “WLLers” might not support it, but the strictly “TOMTers” and the “IICHYers” might like it. and the people that loved it all, might like both. who knows! (it’s kinda fun/exhausting playing this adam guessing game though, isn’t it?)

hopefully any reputable music critic who reviews the song will also be aware of the story behind the album and will cage their review as such. i know there are tons of music hacks on blogs all across the interwebs, but im trying to see the silver lining here. :down_tb:

  • anna in vegas

If “Want” was the first single from the RCA album, I would buy it. It isn’t, so I won’t.

John Hecker = Uncle Ian!………..I’m waiting for “therealGlambert”s album!!!

  • AC

I don’t think that this will really expand his fanbase.. let’s say that for some reason that people actually like this song and buy it. The real Adam’s stuff (from the sounds of it) will not sound like this and they won’t buy it. In the end though, I don’t think it really matters except that Hifi is a little richer but their reputation has now gone down.

Also, i think Adam’s real single will be uptempo only to showcase the difference between him now and the fake stuff now.

  • HotHotHot

I hope you are right and this pitiful recording won’t do any harm. I think this record company has lost it’s credibility and I will make very sure I never buy anything from them again.

  • twinkle

hopefully this review is indicative of reviews we will see – recognizing that he is “disavowing” the single, that the song itself is pretty crappy but that adam sings it well.

  • alxsavage

Since it was leaked, the song hasn’t got a significant number of plays at Last.fm, if that’s any indications, I don’t think it will get anywhere on the charts. After all, how could it? It’s the most boring Adam song so far. And that for me includes Citizen Vein, Upright recordings, theater performances, electronic demos, and every single Idol song, anything is more exciting than that thing they are calling a single. Yeah, Adam’s voice still gives it a life, but a mediocre song is a mediocre song.

Isn’t it funny, how many idol related releases we are getting in just a couple of days?

  • dyg

I love Adam, but won ´t give my money to Low-hi exploiters. I will support Adam by buying and gifting his real RCA album whenever it is released.

  • Squirrely

****LisaEà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦one of my favorite Adam pics too.

Mine too. Also the song isn’t bad – just not what was expected.

  • clearone

Even the picture they’re using isn’t indicitive of Adam’s current style.

This is obviously not something he wants his attached name to. I feel sad for him that he is working so hard right now on his dream and this crap is getting put out to make a quick buck. Scumbags. Nope won’t be buying it.

  • Sunn

A crappy song exquisitely sung with painfully beautiful vocals. It’s been on my Ipod since Friday, so I wont be buying.

    ETA:

This is obviously not something he wants his attached name to. I feel sad for him that he is working so hard right now on his dream and this crap is getting put out to make a quick buck

It really is a shame. But he’ll get over it, and so will his career. You can’t keep a talent like his down.

  • Sunn

Quote from philly.com review linked by twinkle above:

His performance on “Want” proves the point that he could sing the phone book. It’s a cloying, dull-witted variation on a John Lennon all-you-need-is-love piano ballad, but the guy sells the hell out of it.

    Exactly.

  • Mom in the Suburbs

But I think it will get airplay and I think it will be a hit! People who spent weeks saying how he screams all the time will hear this on the radio and be surprised ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s him, but love the voice. I think, even though its not a brilliant song, it will in fact win him new fans that maybe did not like him on idol!
You’re not the only one who thinks this may win over new fans, Aussie. There’s a reason the Idol producers always put out a middling AC “inspirational” ballad–a lot of average folks will buy such a song. (Then for years anyone with musical taste will make fun of said coronation song.) It’s like Adam got his own winner’s coronation ballad! For this reason alone, some fans will buy this. That and the hot photo.

Not everyone reads the internet religiously or knows that Adam is trying to distance himself from this early demo stuff; luckily, history shows that these “coronation” songs are nothing like what the Idols will put out later. “This is My Now” anyone? IMO few people who follow Idol will at all believe this is Adam’s REAL music. I’m hoping he gets some type of compensation, but even if he doesn’t I don’t think it will hurt him in the long run. This too shall pass.

  • lucy

Thanks for posting the review, twinkle. It’s poifect:

Excerpt :Oh, and some of the material on this “new” album dates back to 2005. Whatever. His performance on ‘Want’ proves the point that he could sing the phone book. It’s a cloying, dull-witted variation on a John Lennon all-you-need-is-love piano ballad, but the guy sells the hell out of it. Lambert’s officially sanctioned debut for 19 Records is expected out sometime in the fall.”

Just exactly what should be said. Covers all the bases in just a few sentences. And it’s what, I expect, most people will say.

  • Tara

Hopefully this is all people will see. Crappy song, but Adam did all he could to save the poor thing. Why, he is a hero if nothing else… Save a crappy song, bring $$$ to a struggling music company. Superadaman.

  • weareallinnocent

Song sucks, Adam shines, not buying it. I wish him the best.

BTW, what’s with the crappy cover “art” — aside from the yummy photo, of course? Did Heckler’s 4 yo get out his/her broken Crayolas and scribble Adam’s name?

Anyone know how HiFi has the right to use Adam’s name in the first place? (I’m assuming Wilshire had the rights to that particular photo, so I’m not asking about the image. But, who really knows.)

P.S. Thanks for the input from Dad. Always enjoy hearing inside scoop, not to mention, irony. :-)

  • Studio57

I said this in another thread, but I think the Citizen Vein stuff is going to be on the album because both Monte Pittman and the drummer from Citizen Vein are both listed as artists on Wilshire’s MySpace page too. I have to admit, I kind of liked the Citizen Vein stuff- I’d be hard pressed not to buy it.

Haven’t decided whether to buy or fileshare “Want”, but the song really kind of grows on ya.

When I read that neither Adam or 19E planned to block the sale of the CD, I kind of had to wonder if they are not exactly against it, they just wanted people to be aware this is not his debut album.

  • chatbrat11

Adam’s voice sounds amazing, but every time I hear the song, the back story makes me puke in my mouth!

    I’m will not buy it!

Anyone in cyberspace can own it for $0, which is exactly what Adam is getting for it.

Read the comments on iTunes. I’m sure Adam’s name and voice will sell many copies, which is why the record company is releasing Adam’s demo tapes for sale.

    FREE GLAMBERT!!!!

  • chatbrat11

It’s really funny that some people don’t realize the album photo is Adam.

  • -Sharona-

“Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a mediocre ballad, and the production is crap, but Adam, as always, sure sound pretty”.
    Couldn’t agree more!!

  • Bufflehead

I doubt the Citizen Vein stuff will be included in On With the Show. Citizen Vein, as far as I know, never worked as session musicians for Wilshire, like Adam did. Session musicians typically sign away all rights to the material they record, which is how Wilshire got the rights to Want and the other stuff they are going to release with Adam’s voice. Citizen Vein was trying to put together a record deal as an artist, so they wouldn’t sign over their original songs.
Monte Pittman is an ASCAP member and has copyrighted the original Citizen Vein material, so I don’t think Wilshire will be able to co-opt it.

  • oceanarose

Just went over to itunes to check out the comments (but did not buy). There are quite a few that don’t seem to know what’s going on with this song. The plus side is that most of those people really seem to like it aside from a few that seem confused by the style and even the picture. I won’t buy but that’s my choice. I don’t condemn those that do, that’s their choice. I don’t think this will hurt him and I won’t be suprised if it sells well.

  • http://umbrellatoday.com Stormy

    Not buying it.

Can someone post a link to that comment from Dadam? I’ve seen it floating around here on MJ’s but I can’t find it anywhere else.

  • will

Does anybody know who actually wrote this song?

  • Studio57

To bufflehead- then why do you think Monte Pittman and the drummer from Citizen Vein are both listed as artists on Wilshire?

If they have two albums worth of songs from Adam, some of it HAS to be Citizen Vein . We all know Adam co wrote the CV stuff. I could be wrong on this but it just makes sense- that would probably be the 2007-2008 stuff hifi is talking about. The session songs were from earlier. And the long standing relationship hifi was talking about was probably Adam’s collaboration with Monte Pittman.

Can someone hip me to doing the quotes from someone else? Thanks.

The song may be being categorized as schmaltzy, AC fare, but I doubt that’s what the songwriter(s), whoever he/she/they be, were going for. I detect a definite intent of someone(s) having tried to compose something “artistic” here. And that Philly reviewer linked above echoed what I said before about it being a knockoff of “All You Need Is Love” (which is not really a pop song).

Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if the bulk of Adam’s “officially-sanctioned” album ends up sounding a lot more llike standard pop than “Want”….

  • LakesideUK

Sooner this piece of dreck vanishes the better.

I was horrified when Perez brought it to light under the guise of being Adam’s new RCA material. “Bice’d” wouldn’t even have begun to describe my feelings about it.

But my relief at discovering its true provenance was fairly short-lived, especially with the threat of a whole album’s worth of this half-baked rubbish in the offing. I understand that everybody has bills to pay but this business turns my stomach nonetheless. Releasing someone’s demos as if they were fully realised artistic endeavours to cash in on their sudden fame is shitty. Really shitty. They didn’t recognise his talent when they had the chance so they sure don’t deserve to profit from it now as far as I’m concerned. Grrr.

I hope no-one buys this and that it dies speedily.

Wake me up when it’s Fall…

No it doesn’t make any sense at all. The point here is that Wilshire probably don’t have rights to citizen vein stuff. This is the reason why Adam can’t stop this, he doesn’t own any rights to this material as he was just hired as a sessional singer to display the songs for the songwriter(s). As I understand, this is not Adam’s material. They claim that it is his, and can probably prove it by comparing his vocals to the written tabs for the song. Let’s say he changed a note, which he has often claimed to do (and most singers do), then he is suddenly a co-writer.

  • Mary102

After thinking about the situation more last night, I realized what irks me the most about it is the fact that the company is releasing it without Adam’s official input or go-ahead.

Sure, this happens all the time in music, movies, print, etc. But it’s just not fair to him to release his material without at least working with him, as, say, his official recording company would.

But I also have no problems with those who choose to buy it or not – it’s definitely a personal choice. But I just have to say that his lack of input in the finished product or promotion/distribution of it is what gets me the most.

  • Sunn

I was horrified when Perez brought it to light under the guise of being Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new RCA material.

Also if you are illegally downloading this track, keep in mind that you are not just “denying a slimy company” the chance to “make money off of Adam”. You’re also cheating the songwriter(s) out of their deserved royalties, and he/she/they are very likely innocent parties in all this.

    Love the picture though. ;)

Yeah. I love this picture. Its my favorite Adam look. I wonder how old it is? I guess its 4-5 years old like the songs. lol

I’m glad Adam’s father made a statement to better clarify Adam’s position. Its obvious the song is a demo. But yeah, as everyone else has pretty much said, its not a good song, but Adam sounds good. lol

As of 7:50am central, Adam’s ‘Want’ is #536 on iTunes.

The beauty of this is that (like any Idol release) if it doesn’t sell it’s because the song is dreck, the production was weak, promotion was non-existent, and the fans boycotted. If it does sell, it’s because Adam is God.

  • karenw

Inspite of the naff production Adam’s voice is still lovely … but the song is blehhhhhh. Yeah …. I’m waiting for the real Glambert before I part with any cash.

You might be onto something Aussiefan. If you think about it, Adam’s most popular performances on Idol were the slower/ballad songs like Track of My Tears, Mad World, If I can’t Have You, etc.

  • xuziqueue

If buying the iTunes version helps put Adam’s name in the iTunes top ten singles list, then I’m all for it.

To me Adam sounds totally different recorded than he does live. I thought that about his itunes AI performances as well. Clay was the same way. i remember when songs from Measure of a Man were leaked months before the album came out and everyone thought it was a session singer but it was Clay – he just sounded that different compared to live. Just an observation, not meant as a negative thing. If I heard this on the radio I wouldn’t recognize it as Adams voice.

Kiss and Tell and Pop Goes The Camera seem to belong to someone named Fonzarelli, and he has said he does not plan on selling it ( there was a link here somewhere).

Collateral damage is inevitable in a fugazi of this proportion and one that is so emotionally charged. That said, the song is dreck and if they sell 100 copies with Adam singing that’s 100 more that they would have sold without him.

It’s a situation where so many people are getting screwed that I think punishing the screwer is a better tack to take than rewarding them because you feel bad for a co-screwee.

That’s the theatre training for you. When performing in front of an audience theatre performers project their voice so that it can be heard. Note that all those who heard Adam sing live (especially in the Nokia centre/Final) said Adam’s voice filled the auditorium. They also tend to give more of a performance live, interjecting drama into their vocals. On the other hand, when singing into a studio microphone you restrain and contain your voice hence the difference.

Don’t know if the comment about Clay applies here though, he sounds just s awful to me live as he does recorded. Yuk!

  • weareallinnocent

Don’t be surprised if some people like this song. My son was a big Gokey (yuK) supporter. He heard the song and absolutely loved it. He couldn’t believe it was Adam. When his girlfriend got off work, he played it for her and she loved it too. Both of them are buying it today. I tried to explain the back story and they didn’t care either way. They just liked the song. So, it could expand his fanbase….just saying. They must have played it five times last night. Couldn’t get enough.

  • noctem seizure

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a situation where so many people are getting screwed that I think punishing the screwer is a better tack to take than rewarding them because you feel bad for a co-screwee.

How is Adam getting screwed? He did a job, lent his talent to a project, and got paid for it and possibly– we don’t know the details– signed away his right to collect future royalties on it. But, still, at the end of the day, he performed a service, and was justly compensated for it.
    —————————————————————————————————————-

Also, if you want to punish the “screwer” then, JUST DON’T DOWNLOAD THE SONG AT ALL. But, don’t steal from a “co-screwee”, as you put it, just because you just have to have the song because it’s Adam singing it.

  • Mary102

To me Adam sounds totally different recorded than he does live. I thought that about his itunes AI performances as well.

To me, his voice mainly sounded the same in both (though more emotional and moving live, because of his strength as a live performer) but I was definitely struck by how the arrangements were so different in both versions – that was usually what I didn’t like as much about some of the studio recordings.

  • ravengirl

If buying the iTunes version helps put Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name in the iTunes top ten singles list, then Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m all for it.

I am so that, xuziqueue. But it stuns me as to how far apart we are from what appears to be the majority of my mj folk as well as those on my adamofficial and, apparently, the entire Adam World.
Sure, the single leaves much to be desired in the production/songwriting department, and with Dadam weighing in it’s clear that Adam was not allowed to soar the way he would have preferred on what is clearly a restrained but beautiful performance.
Sure the Wilshire/HiFi folks are smarmy in what they are doing, but frankly much of the way the entertainment industry works is smarmy to me.
    I get all the arguments.
In the end, what I see is a chance to get Adam’s name on the top of the charts and into more homes. It’s a way to show, as another poster said, that Adam is god.
One other thing: It upsets me how vicious some Adam fans are against the people who have chosen to purchase “Want.” Adamofficial.com was awful last night, attacking people who simply wanted to hear Adam’s voice again, nothing more. Ridiculous.
I bought “Want” last night — even though I already had the free version. Don’t hate me.

  • listen

If I heard this on the radio I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t recognize it as Adams voice.

And to me, “Want” sounds exactly like Adam. But then I have all Adam’s studio AI recordings.

    On another note:

I agree that downloading this song from a source other than iTunes is tantamount to stealing.

I think Kristen (in another thread) compared it to protesting the child-labor Nike employees as a reason to not buy the Nike brand but then stealing a pair of their shoes. While to some that analogy may seem OTT, it is spot on. Downloading this song is stealing. If you want to hear Adam’s voice on this song, then buy it from iTunes.

    How is Adam getting screwed?

Adam is getting screwed because HiFi is claiming that this dreck is Adam’s “signature” and putting it out there well in advance of his actual album in order to cash in on his sudden celebrity.

On the other Adam thread with Redone- someone explained it was from an email Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s dad sent to a mutual friend- so no link.

There should still be a link out there. People are picking up the quote from somewhere where the e-mail is posted, right?

  • twinkle

to the requests for the quote from adam’s dad – the original poster said it was from a personal email… i really dont think we should continue to talk about/repost it. although it sounds like a reasonable response from his dad, each of us could say anything was from some personal email that we can’t give you the link for.

adam’s rumor mill is full as it is.

ETA: Stormy, i really don’t think there is a link. i’ve searched for one and i just get led back to sites quoting it… it’s almost like someone is testing to see how far something will spread without any documentation whatsoever….which we already knew was going to be pretty far.

  • lucy

Again, if Adam and the rest of his band are listed as Wilshire artists, why would you think they( Wilshire) donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the rights to the music?

Well, Wilshire almost certainly has different monetary arrangements with people they work with for different projects. On “Want” and other songs written by whoever wrote them, that songwriter and Wilshire probably have ownership rights, while Adam does not — since he was hired for that project as a session singer and they were intending to shop the songs around to be actually sung and released by somebody else (as at least Want already was.) And thus Wilshire can release the stuff now simply by getting the songwriter’s okay while not getting Adam’s.

On the other hand, the Citizen Vein group, with Adam in it, was working with Wilshire to shop that stuff around as both writers *and* the artists who ultimately intended to record and release the material if anybody bought it. In that case, Adam and the others *would* share the ownership — and Wilshire couldn’t do anything with the stuff without *their* permission.

Now, I’m sure there are other scenarios that I’m not thinking of that could also obtain.

But if the way I described it above is close to the way it went down — and that seems quite likely to me, given what people have found about songwriter credits on ASCAP and given that Adam had the Citizen Vein songs on his Myspace — then there’s a perfectly good reason why Wilshire could release the Want stuff but not the Citizen Vein stuff. Adam had different roles in creating the two groups of stuff, and in one case (Citizen Vein) that role gives him part ownership, while in the other case (Want), his role of session singer on a songwriter’s demo does not.

  • mmb

I like it and I bought it. Neither Adam nor RCA nor 19 are encouraging people to ignore/not to buy this. Their only concern is with clarifying the fact that this is not post-idol/rca/19 work, hence Adam’s statement. I have worked with entertainment industry clients, and (although I have no knowledge of the current situation) trust me, if RCA/19 were really concerned that this could damage Adam’s career they would have been in court already. This is a no lose situtation for them — at no cost to them it provides new Adam-sung music to the marketplace while he is on tour and recording his “real album”. If Want does well, they can spin it that there is overwhelming demand for everything Adam, even old treacly demos. If it fades into oblivion, they just chalk it up to being an underproduced demo that was not written or supported by Adam etc. etc.

  • mahrikka

hopefully this review is indicative of reviews we will see – recognizing that he is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“disavowingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ the single, that the song itself is pretty crappy but that adam sings it well.

Thanks, twinkle for the review. If all the reviews are similar, I will feel much better about this. I, personally, am choosing not to purchase “Want” from itunes because of the sleazy tactics of Hi Fi. I certainly respect others who do. To many, including myself, Adam’s voice is irresistible.

I almost hate to admit this, but I have heard the song a few times (not from itunes) and this morning, I woke up with a song running through my head. It took me a while to figure out what it was and was somewhat appalled when I figured out it was “Want”… Help me!

  • sr4mjc

I don’t know what it is about this recording, but when the background vocals kick in, I get startled. Listening to it in the car this morning, I jumped because it sounded like screeching brakes. Not Adam’s voice, which is lovely, but something strange with something in the background. For the record, I didn’t buy it, if anyone is keeping a poll.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

I won’t buy it (or steal it, Noctem Seizure!) Just a personal choice. I have enough Adam songs on my iPod that I really love. I don’t need to add something I’ll end up skipping over every time it comes on until I finally delete it.

The song itself isn’t awful. And since it’s a demo, I’d even say that, lyrically, it was still a work in progress. Had it been picked up by a producer who wanted it for a particular artist, I’m sure the lyrics would have been reworked and the artist or producer given writing credit. But, it’s not a song I’ll listen to more than a few times out of curiousity.

I agree with mmb. I don’t think this will hurt Adam at all. The song won’t get radio play. I doubt Hi-Fi/Wilshire plans on putting any money or effort into getting the song promotion. They’re just out to make a quick buck. The only people who are even going to bother with it are people who know about – aka: Adam’s fans.

The song is meh but Adam sounds good and that picture of him is gorgeous.
I’d rather listen to him sing this song than that terrible No Boundaries, thanks for the link.

  • suebrody

This song sounds, to me, worse than No Boundaries, b/c that song didn’t capture his lovely falsetto or soaring voice at all. At least you can hear him on this track. :) If this track had been finished, and I’m certain it wasn’t, then I would buy it.

HOWEVER: Because Adam has distanced himself from the track, because it is unfinished, because it doesn’t sound like him at all anymore, and b/c it won’t receive any of the profits from it, I won’t buy it (and where are the lyrics? At least NB has lyrics, albeit too many of them and it’s corny!).

If you want to hear Want over and over, go to YouTube. It’s there and it’s not illegal to just *listen* to it, right? If the track brings Adam new fans (or pleases his current ones), then booyah. What to me is more important is that Adam continue to inform us of the music that he is working on with RedOne (thanks for the clip of the two them, Adam and RedOne, mj!). I can’t wait to hear him on the Tour and hear his, IMO, “real” album.

    Just my $02.

If you think about it, Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s most popular performances on Idol were the slower/ballad songs like Track of My Tears, Mad World, If I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Have You, etc.

I actually disagree with this…for me, even though I love these performances, I really loved the “get crazy” Adam. Adam “moves” better than most performers and infinitely better (IMHO) than any other idol has shown on the show.

That is why I can’t wait for his OTT songs so I can see what he will do with the videos. But then, I like visuals!

My worst fear is that over-zealous fan site is going to “promote” this dreck and “encourage” everyone to raise it to “hit” status by buying and gifting and extoling the virtues of ‘Want’.

Adam couldn’t have input into this release even if he wanted to or he would indeed be breaching his contract. Certainly going to raise some issues for session singers and that part of the industry, though whether anything changes is another matter. You may either want to think twice or make sure you don’t do all your work for one studio.

Well I think the vast majority of Adam fans are not only not buying this, and in fact are actively encouraging others not to buy it. It isn’t worth it to have Adam’s name in the iTunes top 10, if what’s he associated with a really crappy song with low production values and have it be thought of as something he had anything to do with beyond lending his voice, and this could drive down his potential market/brand for his future and real stuff he is working his ass off now for and is the culimation of years of work. And it’s best to buy his stuff he actually is in charge of and proud of, and get his name on the iTunes top 10 that way.

Oh and there is the fact that this company is screwing Adam over by releasing this material and lying about it while doing so, as per Adam’s statements vs theirs, all while making money while screwing hiim over and he makes none, nadda, bubkis. So all buying this single means to this Adam fan, is that one is essentially rewarding people who are screwing Adam over. But that’s just my opinion. I wouldn’t claim to represent any Adam fan outside myself.

As for pirating this song, I agree the best solution is not to download it at all, but my personal feelings (and not indicative of anyone else’s) are that if someone really can’t wait, can’t control their urge to hear it, than yeah, it’s best to get it from an Adam fan and make that part of their protest against these bottom-feeding cockroaches. Yeah, sucks for the songwriter, but if I have to choose between them, I choose not helping them against Adam.

Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be surprised if some people like this song. My son was a big Gokey (yuK) supporter. He heard the song and absolutely loved it. He couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe it was Adam. When his girlfriend got off work, he played it for her and she loved it too. Both of them are buying it today. I tried to explain the back story and they didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care either way. They just liked the song. So, it could expand his fanbaseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.just saying. They must have played it five times last night. Couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get enough.

Hifi is no dummy. Adam is a gold mine. There’s no denying this is gonna sell or they wouldn’t be releasing it after sitting on it for years.

Adam is a great singer and if he picks up some fans because of this release, good for him. His current fans will buy it too, it’s a personal choice.

Personally, I’ve listened to it many times, for free, on the internet.

I actually disagree with thisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦for me, even though I love these performances, I really loved the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“get crazyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Adam. Adam à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“movesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ better than most performers and infinitely better (IMHO) than any other idol has shown on the show.

Personally, I like both Adams. But I’m trying to look at this from unbias lens. The media and critics seemed to review his slower songs higher. Adam said during his EW interview with Slesak that the songs where he “brought it in” were more popular overall. B&W and Whole lotta love were exceptions, but Born to be wild, ring of file, play that funky music, cry, weren’t as well received.

Everone knows Adam can sing… his haters will even admit that. In addition, it is already a known fact that Adam is a fantastic, charismatic performer. He owned that stage better than anyone, but Mad World and Tracks of my Tears specifically are what Adam will be known for on Idol. He will undoubtedly be known for Ring of Fire too, but more for the boldness of it. Grant it, ROF was the first song of his I downloaded from itunes. It is one of my favorites. :)

  • Heart

His performance on “Want” proves the point that he could sing the phone book. It’s a cloying, dull-witted variation on a John Lennon all-you-need-is-love piano ballad, but the guy sells the hell out of it.

The above quote from a review on the first page is spot on.

I don’t see anything wrong with anyone who wants to buy it. It’s good, free publicity for Adam if it does well!

At least they used my favorite preIdol Adam picture!

But, still, at the end of the day, he performed a service, and was justly compensated for it.

Yeah, I agree that what they did technically seems legal (they had the rights, etc.) but the fact that he is not sanctioning it, and that they aren’t working with him to release it or give him any say in it, is what kind of screws him over with it.

This is why I always feel bad about artists, especially early in their career, signing away the rights to their work because they kind of don’t have a choice (need the money, coerced, tricked, what have you) – then they are kind of screwed in terms of having no more control later on, simply because of what they had to do to “make it” early on in their careers.

  • Zerika

I’ve thought Want and HiFi a bit more. I don’t actually have a problem with them releasing the song, my problem is the way they are promoting it. They are claiming it’s Adam’s debut single and the debut album is coming soon! Their story keeps changing between their press releases as they are trying to make it sound like the single/album is something it just… isn’t.

If they had just released it the way Is Anybody Listening? was released (which kind of just popped into iTunes when the show ended without any press releases that I could find) I would not have any problems with it. Or if they’d admit that it’s just a demo song Adam sang for the money as session singer.

I’m not buying it (I don’t think I even could where I am) nor am I downloading it. Hopefully it sells so badly they won’t bother releasing the “album”.

  • saga

I don’t like that they are probably stretching the truth as far as Adam being a co-writer. I don’t like that they pretend that it is ‘his’ sound. I don’t like that they promote it as ‘his’ single. As far as selling his sessional work, that’s all fine with me, he has a great voice. I actually think they would have made more money by just selling it as that because maybe that wouldn’t have launched a boycott?

  • girlygirl

Well, as of 8:35 a.m. Pacific time, this song isn’t listed in the Top 100 of Itunes — which is good.

I didn’t like the song or the production, and although I am an Adam fan, I’m not going to buy a single I don’t like simply because it was sung by a musician I like. I don’t do that for the other musicians I’m a big fan of, either. I have to like the actual song to spend money on a single. Albums are a different story. But that’s just my own thing.

  • TWI

It’s amazing how much on-line conversation this “Want” topic has generated!
I read a long thread of comments on it yesterday, and it continues still.
At least it’s keeping Adam’s name front and center, in a good way – better than someone inventing scandal to harm his name.

It’s just a song. One song.

I won’t buy it, but did download it when someone provided a link when it first emerged on the scene. Actually I promptly lost it among all my files, so haven’t listened to it again, probably won’t, because I wasn’t impressed.

Guilt? No – not on this front. I feel guilt that people are dying of starvation around the globe, or that we are not doing enough to look after our environment. That’s to feel guilty about.

I bought a cd at E-bay a while ago – a Digital Glitter production, it contains a lot of Adam’s old work (much of it was/is on YouTube.) It cost double what the average cd costs, so I hope Adam received something from that. I read somewhere that Adam and someone called Fonzarelli were in partnership on some projects at Digital Glitter, so feel okay about this. If it’s illegal, then I’m sorry, it was bought in good faith. Still no guilt! :blush_tb:

Now that you mention it, this is 100% true.

I sure hope the same thought eventually dawns on the HiFi people- they could have made a boatload more money had they just presented this material in a more forthright manner.

  • just sayin

    Maybe I’m missing something here……

but say you were the producer of this song. You put up money, hired the musicians, the singers, the studio time, etc. Shopped the songs around and it never panned out. You had hired a good, but unknown and fairly inexperienced studio singer, and he signed the normal contract giving you rights to the work — the typical contract. He was happy to have a paid gig and was glad to have the job. A few years later he becomes famous. NOW! Now you finally have a market for these songs that you spent money producing a few years ago and a chance to recoup the money you spent. Why wouldn’t you release them? That’s business. I don’t really see how Adam is getting screwed over this.

I think some of you talking about bad karma falling on these producers and how they are screwing Adam might be tempted to put this song on the market yourselves if you had spent your own $$ producing it and had not had success with it yet. Do you really expect them to say, “Oh darn it. We could actually finally sell these tracks now that Adam Lambert has become famous. But let’s not. We wouldn’t want to confuse the public and interfere at all with his CD release in the Fall.” Please. Many of you would do the same thing they are doing, if you would stop to think about it. It’s just business. Adam will be fine.

  • Truthiness

How is Adam getting screwed? But, still, at the end of the day, he performed a service, and was justly compensated for it.

Because they aren’t presenting this as some session work he did and won’t get money for. When pressed about the question of compensation, they only weasled their way into saying Adam would ‘share in the success.’ Which only works if one believes some demo work will enhance Adam’s career and not just their pocketbooks (which I don’t). Which again fine, if they wanted to put it out as ‘hey, we found these demo sessions of Adam’s, we’re going to sell them!’ And if they were honest about his not getting any money from it. Oh and if they were honest about his involvment with them. Oh and if Adam endorsed this work and was proud of it and had anything to do with it, besides his voice…and it was being promoted as such as well by HiFi. But that’s not the case up and down, here.

HiFi has been promoting this as Adam’s “new,” single. They are making an “album,” of session work he did, and presenting it as new stuff. They are doing it deliberately ahead of his real album he actually did have a hand in creating to try and cash in on his hard-worked for high profile. HiFi is twisting it so that all of a sudden, Adam has co-written 8 of the 11 songs (though oddly, none are listed in song writing catalogues for him). They already lied about the “Want,” song because it was made into December by them, but they got found out about that, took it down as part of their selling their latest story and this crap. They all, but admitted they just sprung this on Adam and 19/Sony “they know now!” HiFi has a very different story than Adam, thus by putting Adam’s veracity at risk. Though given how much HiFi story has changed, doesn’t make sense, their having December up, not acknowledging it, taking it down sneakily when found out…all seem to establish to me whose word I should be taking.

And this could possibly tarnish Adam’s brand and it’s not being presented honestly by these people, while doing so. It’s not even making Adam any money, so bottomline Adam doesn’t get anything positive from what HiFi is doing here. All the negatives are on his end. So yeah, I think that HiFi is screwing Adam. Obviously your mileage varies. That’s cool.

Good points, maybe if they just sold this for what it was there wouldn’t be a backlash.

The question is however how many Adam fans are not active members of internet fansites – we tend to forget about a good percentage of Idol viewers are casual viewers, they are interested in reality TV more so than music per se and then again quite a high percentage of that crowd will buy no music as a result of the show.

It’s onto the next season or So You think You Can Dance or all the Idol winners should be selling 10 million records easily.

I myself have never bought any Idol music until this year, saw the tour last year for the first and probably last time, and I have seen Daughtry opening for Nickelback. That is the sum total of my support. My bad.

  • mandalay

Hey justsayin – YOU SAID IT. Thank you for the reality. I gave up with it yesterday. Gee does all the hand-wring and speculation remind you of another Idol? Hey, are there any leaves around to rake?

I bought Is Anybody Listening and I knew that was not an Adam Single per se. I would have bought Want and probably the CD if they had not tried to  «con » us!

If they had said what it was that it was a demo and that they will release later a CD with other demos songs, then people would have known that it was not what Adam future CD was going to sound like but just because it was Adam fans, including me, would have bought it.

HI-FI just to let you know that even if Adam was just singing the classified ads in Craig’s list fans would buy it just to hear his voice!

Before the CD of demos comes out HI-FI, stop the bull, come clean, appologize to the fans and to Adam for the misleading advertizing and maybe fans will forgive you and buy!

TWI, you mentioned Digital Glitter. As a matter of fact, one of the blogs recently posted this from that Fonzarelli guy. I think those of you who think Wilshire Hi-Fi is exploiting Adam will be happy to hear what this guy has to say.
Digital Glitter, by the way, includes some of Adam’s great pre-AI electronica tunes like “Kiss and Tell” and “Pop Goes the Camera,” the latter which is very addicting. Love it! :wub_tb:

mena music – digital glitter info and new mena music releases etc
    Category: Music
hi people, sorry it’s been so long since the last blog, it’s very hard to find the time to keep everything up to date!

we’re getting a huge number of questions regarding the ‘digital glitter’ project with adam lambert off american idol so thought we’d let everyone know the history/where it stands

adam and myself ‘fonzerelli’ had worked on a few tracks together as a ‘project’ before he entered the american idol competition
only a few songs were released on the mena music label at the time
when adam entered the comp he (like everyone else) had to sign a contract, which is standard practice, that restricts them from having other musical commitments outside of idol for a certain period of time
obviously i was really sorry to have to let adam go as he was by far the best singing talent that i’ve ever worked with -a genuine ‘born to sing type’ of guy and really pleasent as well!

adam felt had to follow his dream or at least give it a try or he might regret it in the future -singing on my & mena music tracks would’ve only taken him so far and he needed a major label to propel him onto a worldwide stage

he deserves every sucess and he has my full support

as far as new digital glitter tracks go there are a few not yet released but i might put them up for free for fans of adam

the good news is that if you like the digital glitter ‘sound’ there are loads of similar orig and new tracks on the ‘mena music’ label ,you can find links that the bottom of this page

if you want daily/weekly updates please go to the ‘fonzerelli dj producer’ myspacepage as this is where it all happens!!!!

    take care

“I actually think they would have made more money by just selling it as that because maybe that wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have launched a boycott? ”

People appreciate honesty. It’s HiFi’s complete lack of honesty and integrity that bothers me. If this had been promoted as…while you’re anxiously anticipating Adam’s original music to be released in the fall, we thought you’d appreciate some of his work as a session singer to tide you over…it may have gone over better with Adam fans.

Edited to correct the quotes. I’ll get this down one day I promise.

  • Michelle

Oh lol, on that cover he has David Cook’s hair and goatee from 2007 :D

  • saga

But say you were the producer of this song. You put up money, hired the musicians, the singers, the studio time, etc. Shopped the songs around and it never panned out. You had hired a good, but unknown and fairly inexperienced studio singer, and he signed the normal contract giving you rights to the work à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the typical contract. He was happy to have a paid gig and was glad to have the job. A few years later he becomes famous. NOW! Now you finally have a market for these songs that you spent money producing a few years ago and a chance to recoup the money you spent. Why wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t you release them?

This is clearly not material meant to be anything than songwriting demos in my opinion, not a very a high cost production. I am all for selling it if there are buyers, not at all for the deception of Adams contribution to the material. Not at all worried for Adam though!

  • Zombini

People appreciate honesty. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s HiFià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s complete lack of honesty and integrity that bothers me. Yes, this is the problem.

  • IndyMuse

Does anyone else think the song sounds a little like “Better in Time”? At least one section did to me.

  • Squirrely

It’s done, not much can change it now. Best to just move on like Adam and 19E has.

  • dhunken

Just my opinion, but I think Adam’s (old New) “Want” is better then both Brook Whites and Michael Johns new singles. Love the We are the Fallen single “Bury me alive” with Carly though.

  • sidewalkstory

Neither Adam nor RCA nor 19 are encouraging people to ignore/not to buy this.

That’s because legally, they can’t. Read between the lines of Adam’s statement. He is telling you he is NOT endorsing it.

  • suebrody

I love Is Anybody Listening. I have the DVD of The Ten Commandments (utter dreck, IMO, but funny to see Adam in dreadlocks and Val Kilmer attempting to sing!) and I downloaded (legally, off iTunes) the song. It was *there*. It wasn’t Adam’s *new* single. It was on the iTunes hot 100 chart (briefly) and if you knew the production or were an Adam fan or maybe even stumbled across it and really liked it (his voice is stunning on it, IMO), you downloaded. Otherwise, you didn’t. I think Want is unfinished, with few and far between lyrics (tho I love his voice on it, naturally), and as much as I *love* Adam, I cannot bring myself to buy it. Clearly, what Hi Fi is doing is not illegal, or 19/RCA would be all over it, but Adam made clear his feelings about this single (and its subsequent album–if this is the best track, I shudder in fear about the rest of them), and that’s good enough for me.

  • Natasha

I think some of you talking about bad karma falling on these producers and how they are screwing Adam might be tempted to put this song on the market yourselves if you had spent your own $$ producing it and had not had success with it yet.

Like others have said putting the songs out isn’t necessarily the problem. It’s making them seem like more than old demos and characterizing them as Adam’s “signature sound”. I mean, come on. The hell it is. And apparently they didn’t even let Adam sing them the way he wanted. If they had put it out straight up as some songs Adam sang in a studio session a few years ago maybe people would have been more friendly to it. I would have considered buying them if they had done that but I’m not going to now.

  • Norcal2009

    JUSTSAYIN….AMEN!!!!!

I would like to see even his Pre-Idol stuff soar to the top of the charts. I bought “Want” last night as soon as it was put on iTunes. I like the song. It’s sweet. I’m hoping someone will do a little remix to it to adamitup.

I keep checking iTunes and I don’t see it in the top 100…Where is the link?

    Help….

  • xuziqueue

Here is one chart for iTunes: http://musicchartfeeds.com/itunes-pop-chart/

  • TWI

ravengirl ~~~~ Thanks for that information. The cd I have has those tracks you mention on it – there are 20 in all, including the musical theater ones. Glad I bought it!

Here is one chart for iTunes: http://musicchartfeeds.com/itunes-pop-chart/

I’m confused- that has “Want” at #84 on pop chart, while the iTunes store pop>>top pop songs has it at #61 right now. Is there a delay on that site?

  • just sayin

If they had put it out straight up as some songs Adam sang in a studio session a few years ago maybe people would have been more friendly to it.

I don’t think it would matter a bit how it was presented. If they had said, “Here are some songs Adam sang in a studio session a few years ago” you don’t think people would be complaining about them being put up for sale? It wouldn’t matter. People would still be saying that they were just studio session songs made to shop the song around, not Adam’s signature sound, shoudn’t be making money off of them, etc.

  • xuziqueue

Must be, snood199. Definitely go by the iTunes store info. Sorry for the already outdated source.

  • Zerika

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think it would matter a bit how it was presented. If they had said, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Here are some songs Adam sang in a studio session a few years agoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think people would be complaining about them being put up for sale? Not really. Nobody has had any protests about Is Anybody Listening? being sold in iTunes. That song is not Adam’s own music or his “signature sound” (wasn’t RedOne the first to use this term, not HiFi?) either, but it doesn’t matter since they aren’t claiming it is!

  • snood199

    *shrugs*
A slightly-outdated source still beats none at all. And I think it’s catching up, too.

  • Truthiness

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think it would matter a bit how it was presented. People wouldn’t be complaining that it wasn’t Adam’s signature sound, if the songs weren’t being promoted as being part of Adam’s signature sound, the way these are.

As for people having a problem with it being sold? Well people didn’t have a problem with “Is Anybody Listening,” and buying that, despite Adam not making money off of that either, I believe, because it’s presented honestly.

So yeah, if HiFi had like someone said above said ‘hey, here is some session work, while you’re waiting for Adam’s REAL work (stuff he didn’t just put a voice to), buy if want.” I for one would have less issue from it. I would still think less of them than people like Fonzerelli who are going to make his unfinished work w/Adam be made avail for free, because it is a rough cut and he knows, not indicative of Adam as an artist as a whole. But I wouldn’t be completely against HiFi’s selling these songs. But they weren’t honest and they actively have been changing their story, and lying frankly, at so it’s them vs. Adam. They have made it that way and as an Adam fan, I personally choose Adam and what he says he wants. Which is for people to ignore this dreck that is being packaged for things he wants no part of.

  • Natasha

If it had been made clear that this was old material I wouldn’t have complained although I would have been surprised at first. I can’t speak for anyone else but from some of the comments here it seems like under those circumstances people would have considered buying them.

What bugs me the most is that I think they overstated Adam’s involvement with these songs and that they attempted to portray them as his current sound which isn’t true.

  • Truthiness

Despite too many long and boring posts by me, I forgot to mention the real travesty…that landing strip thing on Adam’s face. And now it’s being put out there….his music associated with it? Ugh! poor baby. For that alone I with there was an injunction against this “album,” and it’s cover picture.

Well said. It is just business. They invested in Adam and now they are reaping their investment. I don’t understand the defensiveness on Adam’s behalf that I read on different message boards. Adam was fine with being a session singer at the time. This comes with the territory.

I agree. I wouldn’t have near as much objection to it if things had been presented this way. It’s the lying and BS that makes me mad. Still won’t buy it.

  • regi

What bothers me the most about all this is the fact that HiFi stated they had enough material for 2 cd’s. So, my thinking is that if this single and CD does well, then you know they will put out another CD of the same that does not represent Adam at all. So I for one will not buy it and make HiFi richer off someones else hard work.

  • twinkle

i hear ya Truthiness and agree on both of your last 2 posts… that picture, while i think it is attractive, is so not ADAM. he looks like a frat boy imitating a rock star.

  • sr4mjc

I think if HiFi presented the tracks as session work, most would be okay with it. But claiming it’s his signature sound and something he wrote is where most are taking issue. He’s called himself a session singer before, I don’t think he’s embarrassed by that at all.

  • xuziqueue

    I like Adam’s “landing strip.”

  • snood199

The cover picture is HOT. When I visit “Come to Me, Bend to Me” on YouTube, I’m always excited for that pic to come up. My favorite one in the whole montage.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

They invested in Adam and now they are reaping their investment.

This is incorrect. They didn’t invest in Adam. The demos weren’t about Adam. The demos were completely about the song and the song writer. Adam was hired help and just another instrument. Adam was not meant to be attached to the songs as they were being shopped around to already-established artists. Sessions singers are anonymous entities, just as like the musicians. They show up on time, do as their told, record the song quickly and cheaply, pick up their check, and go home. The songs then get offered up to the Xtina’s and Celine’s of the music world to rework with their producers and turn into hits.

I guess the good news is that Adam sounds great even with the cheap, shoddy production of a demo session, and even with a song that’s the lyrical equivelant to “Happy Birthday To You.”

  • CindyM

:bye_tb: I like the landing strip too. :wub_tb:

Is there some sort of standard contract for being a session singer?

And does that contract prevent the studio/company from releasing your voice that you were paid to record for them on a future song?

If so, why isn’t that being invoked now?

  • Anastasia72071

    LakesideUK
Releasing someoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s demos as if they were fully realised artistic endeavours to cash in on their sudden fame is shitty. Really shitty. They didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t recognise his talent when they had the chance so they sure donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t deserve to profit from it now as far as Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m concerned. Grrr.

Yep, this is exactly how I feel about the situation. The bottom line (for me anyway) is that this material has been collecting dust in some backroom @ HiFi for years, and only now when Adam is suddenly *everywhere* do they pull it out and say “Hey this stuff is worthy, let’s release it. Oh but the timing is just a coincidence.” I call Bullsh*t on that one, *MR.* Heckler.

My issue with it is the way they’re representing (or misrepresenting, as the case may be) it. I agree with those who have stated that if HiFi had simply released the song(s) on itunes as the demos they are, rather than making a big production of it (“debut” single, signature sound, etc. etc.), I don’t think I’d have a problem with it.

    Most definitely, Sunn. Indeedy!

  • DallasGlambert

You know, I have been reading tons of posts on this Want issue. Tell me again how it hurts Adam to have even a “kinda hit” on the charts? I mean, if he can sell something a little less than great, does that not keep him in the headlines, keep writers and producers interested, keep EVERYBODY interested and tell the world that he could sell the phone book?

Isn’t this the old cliche “any press is good press?” and unless you live under a rock, you KNOW this is some old stuff from the days of trying to break into the business. My mother, 72 years old, happens to love the song because she LOVES Adam’s voice but she likes the ballad, soft stuff. I agree that the HI FI shennanigans seem to be stealing some of the thunder from the debut, but this has generated SO MUCH PUBLICITY that we know the whole story. So somebody enlighten me as to why we shouldn’t be tickled pink for Adam to make the top 100 even if the understory is a little crappy???

    I’m just sayin’……

  • unique28v

he looks like a frat boy imitating a rock star.

Oh wow. Its amazing how subjective looks are. I don’t see any type of imitating at all. lol

I think it’s a good thing! I like seeing Adam’s name at number 60 on the iTunes pop chart today.

  • Natasha

You know, I have been reading tons of posts on this Want issue. Tell me again how it hurts Adam to have even a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“kinda hità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on the charts?

Well, to go back to something we were talking about yesterday, I don’t think one song hurts that much but if Hi Fi keeps rolling out this schlock (or ‘wretched la-las’ as someone called them yesterday) it’s going to start to hurt Adam’s brand. Most people don’t follow things that closely and may not understand this is just demos from yesteryear.

One way to avoid the schlock roll-out is to avoid buying this first one but I’m not telling anyone what to do. Everyone has to make up their own mind on this.

  • twinkle

haha. unique28v … sorry, i think i was having a negative reaction to the “landing strip” and the attire… i feel like someone went “ok, what does ‘rock’ look like?” and went with some stereotypical nickleback-esque image. torn jeans? check. graphic tee? check. facial hair? check. smoldering look to the camera? check.

but again, although the soul patch isnt my preferred adam look he would have to do a lot worse to make me think he was anything less than smokin’ hot. it just didnt feel like adam. but i guess that is appropriate since the song doesn’t either.

  • clearone

So somebody enlighten me as to why we shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be tickled pink for Adam to make the top 100 even if the understory is a little crappy???

Uhm because Adam is being used for the benefit and profit of this so called record company who didn’t see fit to sign or support him 4 years ago. They don’t deserve to earn one red cent off of Adam. They are using his new found fame for their own gain, not his…..and this is not the kind of music Adam wants to be known for. I do believe, from what we have seen and heard of him, that he likes to do things his way and succeed or fail based on his own decisions nobody else’s.

  • Ellie2

Okay, maybe I’m blind, but I don’t see “Want” on the itunes Top 100 at all. Am I looking in the wrong place?

  • DallasGlambert

But…how does it look for Adam if it completely tanks. I just can’t help but believe that will hurt more than help. I hope not. Maybe, just maybe, HI FI will change their method of release after the bad publicity THEY have received. Adam is profiting more than “money” by all of this publicity. What if they roll out a stinky album and it still tops the charts…doesn’t that just mean that Adam has a HUGE FOLLOWING that will buy anything he sings. Can’t that just help in the final scheme of things? I worry about the headlines “Adam Lambert can’t sell music afterall” or some such crap because this HI FI is going to release whether we like it or not.

  • mandalay

Thanks DallasGlambert and clearone for yet another slice of reality.

I don’t get how the song can hurt his “brand”. Does an artist have to do the same type of music and songs all the time to be a hit? God I hope not ’cause that would be boring as hell. As with every other artist and song – some people will like it, some people won’t. Even if they hate this song, I don’t see them never buying another Adam song just for that reason.

  • snood199

    Okay, maybe Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m blind, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wantà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on the itunes Top 100 at all. Am I looking in the wrong place?

It’s not there (yet?). It’s in the iTunes Pop 100. Go to genre>>pop, then top songs.

  • xuziqueue

ellie2 – It’s on number 60 on the iTunes songs pop chart. Choose pop as the genre and then the top songs chart on the right.

  • pjd

I’ve been watching the iTunes top Pop 100 chart that someone posted a link to earlier. Mad World has been floating between 45-49 and Want is bouncing around a lot from a high of 60 to nearly off the chart. I would think that Want’s best day would be today – “new” (to the fans) music, lots of publicity – so presumably it isn’t going to top the charts.

What I really want to know is WHO is still buying Mad World? Are new people still finding it after seeing some of the Adam publicity? Any hope that more casual people will find that recording rather than Want?

  • Truthiness

Well I can’t claim to have come up with “landing strip,” I just saw it and thought it sadly appropriate. I think Adam looks good despite it, I like the rest of his look here, actually. But I am not a fan of the soul patch in general, much less this soul patch on steroids. There are people who rock the facial hair, and those who don’t. MMV, but for me (for you) Adam with facial hair just never works. I mean it’s not Shaggy from Scooby Doo levels of bad, but I think he looks best clean shaven.

  • Mary102

I think one of the best things about this is that at least the single is coming out now. This benefits Hi Fi the most (coming right off of Adam’s RS cover, all the post-idol interviews, etc.) while not having a worst case scenario of having the single drop just as he’s trying to promote his new sound with the new album in the Fall.

I agree that releasing some Idol tour stuff (vids on youtube, on official sites, getting the press associated with concert reviews) will be a nice easy way to get rid of the press surrounding the Hi Fi stuff (which I’m mostly unhappy about, simply because Adam has not endorsed it).

By the time Fall rolls around, this will be a distant memory.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

I must be alone in that I adore the photo that they used- it is one of my favorites!
When I am in the mood for Butch Adam, that’s the one I go to.

  • DallasGlambert

Yes, not to be redundant…but I would rather see the headlines (and Adam DOES generate headlines) “The amazing Adam Lambert can sell anything, even Crap!” as opposed to what some of the bloggers and media types would write, just for the sensationalism.

Adam will be far less embarassed by this old stuff if it sells well than if no one buys it, believe me.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

And does that contract prevent the studio/company from releasing your voice that you were paid to record for them on a future song?

Oh, gosh. I doubt it. Even signed artists don’t have much say over what happens to the songs they record. The producers of the demos own them. They can do with them as they wish.

As for this hurting Adam, I say it won’t at all. It’s still sleazy that Hi-Fi handled this the way that they did. But, I don’t think it’s a huge deal. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a thing wrong with people buying the single for whatever reason.

  • Kath77

The most repulsive aspect about this story is that HiFi is spinning the release of a crappy demo as this amazing wonderful song, when in fact they’ve been sitting on this song and Adam’s demo for years and only came out of the woodwork now to profit off Adam. It’s just a money grab, will not benefit Adam, could possibly hurt his image with some consumers, and mostly it just reeks of exploitation of Adam and Adam’s fans.

I hope it disappears quickly and HiFi thinks twice about releasing any more dreck they have in their vaults.

  • bambambam

Sorry if these examples were mentioned upthread, but old tapes come out whenever a new star makes a splashy debut.

The Jackson 5, Shania Twain, Donna Summer, soooo many people have old tapes that get licensed globally at international music conferences like MIDEM, which is sort of the Cannes Film Festival of music.

So this is not at all out of the ordinary, fans certainly know what is a new record with an expensive video and promotion surrounding it, and what’s a barrel scraping with no push behind it and no appearances or performances of it by the artist.

No damage to Adam, though some seem to wish it would. No effect on his career whatsover. You know about the many re-releases of the Eileen Shania Twain tapes? Never heard of them? Never seen them? I rest my case. They certainly damaged her, huh?

    Scenario:

Movie maker makes a movie with a sorta unknown starlet. Unknown starlet was happy to be getting some work and some footage for her audition reel. Money’s tight and the movie gets shelved, unreleased.

Meanwhile the unknown starlet goes on to make a film that turns into a cult hit. Others get interested and suddenly she is starring in other movies, too.

Movie maker with the shelved movie decides it’s worth the money to release the early work with the now known starlet since they had put some money into developing it to begin with.

Movie maker releases the early work of the unknown starlet who is now known.

How is the Adam situation any different?

  • pjd

Movie maker releases the early work of the unknown starlet who is now known.

How is the Adam situation any different?

Well … if the unknown starlet was actually the body-double and they managed to edit the movie to make her look like the “star” then I’d say it was similar. In the example above, the unknown starlet was at least making a movie that she hoped would maybe be released. A body-double who is just a place holder would be far closer to a session singer. No one ever expects that the session singer’s recordings will ever be released – including the singer themselves. Just as a body-double would be pretty surprised to see themselves suddenly the star of the movie.

  • Truthiness

Adam will be far less embarassed by this old stuff if it sells well than if no one buys it, believe me.

Considering that Adam himself is saying that this isn’t his music, (unlike what HiFi is saying), it only took place in 2005 (unlike what HiFi is saying) isn’t like his music he is creating now which will be his signature sound (unlike what HiFi is saying) and that he isn’t get any money for it, I suspect that Adam wouldn’t be anything other than highly pleased that the lying bottom feeders trying to make a buck off him now, don’t succeed.

  • weese

This might be different in that Adam has been implicated in sanctioning the release and I have not kept up enough to know if that has satisfactorily been refuted.

  • dyg

Have you read the comments being left by Adam ´s fans on iTunes?

  • lamslova

Dyg Id love to read them. How did you find the comments? thanx :)

  • DallasGlambert

What I got from Adam’s statement is this: This is not in any way what MY current music will be like. This is some old stuff I did when I was broke.

I didn’t get that he was saying “I hope you don’t like it and hope you don’t buy it.”

But like I said, some people like it …they like his vocals. I just think it shows the world that he has a huge following who love his vocals and will buy a recording of him singing in the shower if they can get their hands on it. That just has to help him with future contract negotiations down the line.

There is a “boycott” going on in the adamofficial.com network. They have some threads telling people to leave reviews on iTunes but don’t buy the song. (Actually they seem to be about 12 years old though and that’s why you see all the reviews.) Maybe that’s the way to go. I truly don’t have the answer. But if say, enough people are buying it to put it on the charts, but it kind of flops at around 40 or 50, does that give his detractors something to work with?

I’m open to all opinions…..I guess I would just like for anything he does to make big headlines and keep him in the news.

  • suebrody

    Thanks, dyj. Got it!

    These are my favorite headers:

five stars–Do NOT buy this song!!!

    And

five stars: DO NOT REWARD THESE PEOPLE

So, I wonder if these reviewers actually bought the single, or just wanted to let others know that it was great but you still shouldn’t get it. ;)

I continue to feel torn about this purchase (I know, it’s only .99, it the principle behind it), and it continues to grow on me, the way (gasp) No Boundaries did. :)

So, I have been reading these comments throughout the day and first off want to say that I think this a great discussion. I have been going back and forth all day over the “right and wrong” of this. I totally understand the points about this being business and how this has happened before. I also happen to agree that it isn’t the fact that these songs are being released but more about howthey are being released. I fall in the mind set that if these were released as “hey while you’re waiting for Adam’s new album to come out how about checking out these demos he recorded to hold you over” I would be fine with the whole thing.

While debating this I have also been debating whether or not to purchase Want. I finally made my decision and it has nothing to do with any of the above. I love Adam’s work not only because of his beautiful voice but also because he makes me “feel” the songs. I’m not getting that from Want. Now if the Dadam quote about Adam having to sing the songs straight is true then I understand why I am not “feeling” it. This is why I will not purchase this song. If, when the whole album comes out I “feel” one of the track I will probably purchase it but I’m not expecting it.

  • BootStar

WANT ADAM LAMBERT. There’s a subtle subliminal message!

Where did the photo used in the cover art originate? I recognize it, but I’m not sure who actually took the picture. Was this something out of the public domain or did Hi Fi pay a commercial photographer for it? I actually like it, but it really doesn’t look anything like Present Day Adam. Or are they going for the “retro effect” thing too. :rolleyes_wp:

And it appears on Adam’s American Idol page on iTunes, and I don’t get that at all, unless there’s some tacit winking between all the parties going on behind the scenes.

  • AC

heh.. I’m looking at the itunes pop charts right now and Kris’s No Boundaries is one spot above his- more Kradam action? =) looking at the popularity bars, it’s about even with womanizer.

It is funny reading the comments though, most are 1 star or 5 star but they say the same thing- Adam’s great, don’t buy this song. hehe.. I wonder if Hifi realized that there might have been a backlash from the adam fans instead of them all clamoring for it.

  • saga

Can you in any way see the total number of sales and the price per sale on itunes? Then we can easily calculate how much they earned and if it was worth it.

Dyg thank you very much for explaining how to find the comments! After reading some of the posts it seems “Glamberts” are out in full force :) . I saw theyve even posted Adams statement.

  • http://umbrellatoday.com Stormy

I’m going to try to discipline myself and make this my last comment on this thread, because it’s kind of going in circles, and a lot of us (me included) are repeating ourselves.

How is this different than the starlet / Shania Twain / Christina Aguilera / Alice Sebold / a dozen other examples (upthread over the last 24 hours) of people who have had mediocre product released into the market?

Because the mediocre product was released *after* the quality product, while the quality product was getting heavy promotion and making a splash. There is a void in the market right now, Adam wise. Nobody knows what his sound is like. Hi Fi is saying “this is his signature sound”. With nothing else to compete with that or compare it to for four long months, they are defining Adam’s sound for him, using product in which Adam had no creative involvement, product that should in no way be attached to his name, product he didn’t and wouldn’t choose for himself. Out there. Defining him. Taking full and unfair and unethical advantage of the brave and daring and amazing work he did on Idol. Legal schmegal: what Hi Fi is doing is wrong.

Even if I was sympathetic about them wanting to make some money in these tough economic times (and frankly, I’m not) my sympathy ends where their determination to paint Adam with this schlocky brush begins.

This won’t ruin Adam. All in all, I think he’s going to have a Very Good Year, and an even better long term career. But Hi Fi is still grossly dishonest, the song still sucks, and the sooner it all fades away, the better.

All of this is, of course, my own Humble Opinion. YMMV.

    Peace.

  • suebrody

    Want…Adam Lambert? God, that’s funny. Or: Want…Adam Lambert…Love.

Oh, this is just so bad. ;)

The funniest thing is that pretty much every review loves the single and tells you not to buy the single. And yet there they are, so I’m dying to know how many Adam fans are *actually* buying Want? The average rating is 5 stars (145 ratings) out of 206 ratings. And Is Anybody Listening is still on Adam’s page. (I highly recommend downloading IAL…his voice is stunning.)

On the pop charts, Adam’s season 8 favorites is at #12, not bad considering that he hasn’t put out any new music. Except he has…sort of…or Hi Fi has. :)

Glee? Really? When did Adam have the time? I’ve never seen Glee so I can’t comment on the show. But if it’s set for the fall, then it probably fits in with the promotion schedule for the album.

I’ll be darned if I’m gonna sit by and watch Brooke’s new lame-o song pass by Adam’s WANT. I think people need to chill. Adam didn’t say not to buy it. He just wants us to know it doesn’t reflect what he’s doing now. We all get it. This is pre-idol stuff. So what? I think people are overthinking this whole thing. Having something of Adam’s FLOP won’t make things better….

I get the whole “starlet” scenario. Well put.

  • Anne03

Norcal2009 – I agree. I don’t think the media will be kind if “Want” flops. However, if it is a hit, then it will prove that he can really be a great success. If a mediocre song can do well, then wait until the real stuff comes out. It is nice to see that it’s at #58 on the charts.

  • AC

it made me smile to see that the song is number 58 on the itunes Top 100 Pop Songs List and the popularity meter is full!

I see something different because it’s not full at all for me when it’s listed with the other pop songs. maybe it is compared to other adam songs?

and not to be even more of a debbie downer, but the pop charts aren’t really indicitive of how well the single is doing- it’s currently right next to womanizer which has been out for a long time and I doubt is selling tons of singles.

I’m thinking Adam’s “want” just filters in for that page because of his name? I remember Matt Giraud’s old albums filtered in to his idol page too.

I doubt the media will call this is a flop- they all know by now that this is his old stuff.

  • Truthiness

    Norcal2009 – I agree. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think the media will be kind if à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wantà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ flops.

The media has been all over the fact that this is old session work that has been dusted off and misrepresented as a new song. No one will blame Adam, nor will it damage his brand if it it is as unsuccessful as it deserves to be. Both by dint of sucking as a song, and by the ratastic maneuverings of HiFi as part of it.

  • lamslova

    Hi AC,

When I went onto itunes I searched Adam Lamberts name along with the word want. It comes up by itself. The popularity meter there was full last I looked. If you click the picture of Adam the comments will come up.

  • SparklesATL

Uhm because Adam is being used for the benefit and profit of this so called record company who didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see fit to sign or support him 4 years ago.

Adam is being used? Adam did this work and got paid for it. He used their studio time and production. How is that being used?

You want to know what using an artist is? Videoing and photographing concert performances when the venue has ask that no pictures or videos are taken. Posting these video’s on YouTube. Putting up the artists music where people can download for free. THAT my friends is taking advantage and using an artist. Cellcerts are using an artist. How? Because people who didn’t pay to listen to the music are listening for free same goes for posting the videos and pictures.

So how many of you who are poo-pooing this record company that is legitimately releasing this music for which Adam was paid are going to ban watching concert videos and looking at the pictures?

  • linsav

Stormy – you are my new hero. Fantastic post to sum up the whole situation.

  • AC

lamslova- if you go into the music page- pop, you can click on top pop songs. it’s currently at around 58 on that chart and popularity bar is low since it’s being compared to everything above it. when you click on a single song, for the most part, the popularity bar will be full. When compared to other songs, the bar will move to reflect the differences. =)

This in no way is going to make or break Adam if it does well or not. No Boundaries didn’t kill Kris or Adam, and I doubt the rankings of this will hurt Adam either. On an interesting note, Time of My Life is still on the top pop charts!

Maybe they are thinking it’s free PR?…….Only they know but it could drive you crazy just trying to figure this out! :wallbash_tb:

  • Anne03

Well, maybe I’m in the minority here but I’d just love it if I woke up tomorrow to a headline that read “Adam Lambert’s WANT hits #1 on the charts.” Don’t see how that’d hurt Adam in the least. I may grade the song as a B- or C , but Adam sure sings the hell out of it.

  • DallasGlambert

I, too, want to wake up to headlines “Adam tops the Chart with Want” instead of “Adam Lambert’s ‘Want’ FLOPS.”

The problem, in my humble opinion, is the media. They LOVE to put sensational headlines out there. No matter if it is a crappy, underhanded and sleazy HI FI who put it out there in a less than ethical (?) manner, it still has his vocals and he is the guy in the picture….

I know I have been on a crusade today but can’t help but feel that we ought to support Adam = support his value to future contract deals ( of all kinds, including clothes, cosmetics or film.) If his fans buy his stuff, he will profit in the long run.

For someone who asked, I believe the photo they are using for his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“album coverà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is from the professional photographer Lee Cherry, if you go to his website it is on the front intro page.

    Lee Cherry

He has a bunch of other Adam photos there which look like headshots/professional photos, I believe he is a friend of Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and he is also one of the people that runs the Zodiac Show, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if HiFi bought the rights to the photo or are using it without his permission, it has been posted lots of places on fansites but it may also have been something that Adam was using back then on his resume so they had it already.

The head only (or one taken at the same time and varies very little) was use on the”Wicked” programs for a time for the listing for Adam. I remember thinking that Fieryo didn’t look very much like his photo (luckily he was playing Fieryo when I went to see it).

  • mahrikka

What if they roll out a stinky album and it still tops the chartsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t that just mean that Adam has a HUGE FOLLOWING that will buy anything he sings. Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t that just help in the final scheme of things?

Many of us have mixed feelings about this and I respect everyone’s opinion. But I’d rather RCA know how much fans appreciate that they are willing to spend money on some of the best producers and songwriters and showcase this huge talent that is Adam in the best light. I appreciate this so much that I’m not going to settle for music that was never meant for Adam in the first place.

While I miss downloading songs weekly on my ipod from Adam’s Idol run, I don’t want to send the message that I’m willing to settle for low-budget material that was never meant to showcase Adam in the first place. I am willing to wait for high-quality material from a high-quality singer and artist.

Several new and unusual things happened today. Never saw an organized boycott of purchase by people who love a product. Another “internet changes the rules ” moment.

“Don’t Do It” and “Stay away” Word-of-Mouth, like the comments in iTunes, and all over the internet are usually for brands people don’t like. While fervent and excited supporters usually encourage a purchase.

HiFi was probably counting on the same 10,000 die-hards who bought “Is Anybody Listening?” to go for another 99cents. Plus another maybe 10K in AI fans who like the softer side of Adam. The label gets 70cents a download, they’re set to buy some banner ads for the next batch. And so on and so on. If the week played out half decent, they might get some more money interested in helping.

Instead they meet an army of refuseniks, still absolutely devoted to the brand, but not buying. Amazing. Another never seen anything like it moment in marketing history.

RCA did a good job of making this a “process” story yesterday. Several searches found basically no stories without Adam’s statement. The free ride given HiFi the day before was over.

Thus, no need to worry about the “Adam flops” angle. It’ll still be a process story. About the fans. No matter what the sales figures, way more interesting is this massive fanbase internet power. “Fans stand by their man”. Those iTunes comments are gold.

And congrats to all of you here at MJ’s. Several searches revealed many of our comments yesterday about the rip-off of this being a demo were reprinted at the most fervent sites. And they were all followed by pages, and pages, of devotees taking the “won’t buy” pledge.

So far, day one, bullet dodged. Now they still got a whole lot of tracks, they say. If HiFi goes with getting the album out with say 25 tracks for $5.99 or something semi-irresistable, who knows. And if the next one isn’t such drek, also, the hunger for new product may win. And then, if that gimmick, or any aspect of the process story changes, the media will follow it.

RCA still gotta figuring out how to fill the pipeline with new Adam product. At least, hope they are. Because the big hole without it and the big demand for it are still there. “Glee” cameo is good. Even better if he sings. Guessing the minute Oprah’s back shooting new shows, in September, that’ll happen. We’ll see what else they invent.

About the photo. It’s possible Adam posed for his friend the photog as a stock photo model. Or to do him a favor in return for headshots. Or gave away the rights to that pic in some other manner. Otherwise, not sure how they got to use it.

  • GeminiDolly

Me, too, Anne03, but we are definitely in the minority here. Maybe, just maybe, there are more of us out there beyond this glittery little Internet bubble of ours.

But what I REALLY think would be cool would be to wake up tomorrow and see ANY OTHER song of Adam’s top the charts as a form of protest against HiFi but sign of solidarity behind our boy.

  • DallasGlambert

Ok. FifthHouseSun, you make a lot of sense. As long as it is clear that Adam’s fans are boycotting the questionably ethical way they released the song. I guess I am looking at this in the business sense…”Adam can sell anything” type of publicity that RCA might look at and be gleefully jumping around and clapping their hands and drooling. They are used to old stuff coming to the surface I’m sure.

Adam’s name is on the record and his face is on the cover. I kind of hope it sells a few just to show the ridiculous nature of his fan base…. however, looks like that may be happenin’ anyway.

    Frankly, I love the vocals.

Man, I’m behind the times … I was still on this morning’s thread wondering where everyone went. Dang job, actually demanding my concentration and attention when there are FAR MORE PRESSING matters to attend to. Anyway, love the discussion, love the angles.

It occurred to me, as I was speed-reading through them what a GREAT new media, sociological experiment it would be if Adam gave the approval to go ahead and BUY (through multiple media outlets). I’d like to see how the sales numbers would spike.

Meanwhile, I resist, until I’m positive that he is fine with it.

Er…I’m new to AI, so I don’t know much about the fandoms, but I feel there’s a difference between the psychosis of some claymates (from what I’ve heard) and fans who are commenting on itunes to try to make it clear that Adam doesn’t support that song.

I mean, Adam and Kris (and probably the others too) seem to have some fans who go overboard on the protectiveness, but it seems like a lot of people are just reasonably annoyed that this company is underhandedly trying to profit off of Adam’s newfound fame.

You don’t even know what that tweet did to my little heart! I wasn’t sure about the whole twitter thing but that, that direct shout out to fans from him just made my day. I know, I have no life. He can “speak” to us “directly” and I just love it! I just love Adam.

  • BestAI

Awww that was a sweet tweet from Adam.

Thanks for alerting us to his tweet: “just a quick shout-out to fans: ya’ll are the best! thank you for all ur positive energy and support no matter what. id be nuttin w/o you”

So, he must have approved of the comments from his fans about his Want single. He knows his fans have his back. You should have seen his fans rally around him when he was in the bottom three. Different fan groups sent him flowers, balloons and gifts and words of encouragement. I’m not just talking about dozens of balloons and flowers; he got thousands and thousands. You should have heard them.

  • Anne03

As a big Adam fan, like many of you, I’ve watched every interview I could find with Adam. I’ve read every article I could find, read every word he’s said that I could find. Seems to me that Adam would never do or not do something based on what someone else would want or not want him to do. So in that spirit of doing what you damn well please, I say, If you like the song, then get it. If you don’t like it, then don’t. Guess that’s my final word on this subject. :smile2_ee:

Right on Anne03. Now let’s continue the positive energy.

heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll either end up getting caught having sex with an internet prostitute or limping along in some old tired traveling bà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢way show. Maybe he can hook up with Cats or Les Miz.

Wow!!!!! I just don’t know what to say to that? talk about a leap of fancy. That’s an enormous hyperbolical jump you just made. I hope you landed safely.

and what would we be w/o Adam? OMG, forget I just asked that! BTW: Do you think he got that “ya’ll” from hanging out with Kris? :wub_tb:

Furthermore, we LUV you, FifthHouseSun. Please don’t go away, we need you here!

Amazing group of fansà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ -I did not buy Want but would like to leave a comment on Itunes- could nt figure how to leave acommentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’can someone tell me please

If you have an Itune account simple search Want Adam Lambert and the song will come up. If you look at the screen you’ll find “write a review” at the centre right of the page. Click it, write your comment save it and Bob’s your uncle.

  • twinkle

    this part was particularly interesting:

“Hecker denied some fans’ assertions that Lambert was being ripped off, saying the singer stands to make “a ton of money” through a royalties arrangement commensurate with deals for major artists. Lambert will not only receive songwriting royalties, but he also co-owns the copyrights with Wilshire, Hecker said.

But wait, there’s more. Hecker said the recording sessions yielded enough material for a second album, which will also see the light of day eventually,

A spokesman for 19 Entertainment did not respond to an email seeking further comment.”

…so adam gets paid but there is going to be a SECOND album now. sheesh.

and it also mentions that Monte Pittman co-wrote a lot of them, so maybe it does include some citizen vein and PGTC, K&T, etc.

Adam’s alleged involvement and compensation gets bigger by the hour.

  • lifeisfun

Can I buy it just for the album art, because that’s my favorite photo of him? just kidding…

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Ugh. @FifthHouseSun it brings back horrible memories of Clay and Taylor Hicks. This kind of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“fandomà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ only serves to make the artist a laughing stock and radio wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t touch him. He will never be taken seriously. How embarrassing.

Nah. It’s easy to blame the fans for Clay and Taylor’s supposed lack of success. The truth is, they both went as far as they could within the limits of their appeal. Clay is and was just another Josh Groban and Taylor – well. As I said, he has limited appeal. Neither of them was ever destined to be huge stars. (Which is not an insult, BTW.) Radio is about bringing in ad revenues, not about holding personal grudges against fanbases, or making or breaking recording stars. Radio will most certainly touch Adam if he has some potential Top 40 hits on his album, no matter what the reputation of his fanbase might be.

  • lola

If he is really getting compensated then all I can say is that the fans made it happen. Now he can buy a bigger house.

  • HotHotHot

and it also mentions that Monte Pittman co-wrote a lot of them, so maybe it does include some citizen vein and PGTC, K&T, etc.

Here’s an interesting thought. Maybe Citizen Vein is nothing without Adam, so they sold their stuff to Hi-Fi, too. Might be their only chance to get a record out. If they did that, it would change things a lot. Altho, I don’t see how they could use CV stuff without Adam’s permission.

  • Squirrely

If Adam is truly getting compensated I would buy the full album when it comes out. 10 to 15 bucks won’t break me.

  • BestAI

When it comes down to it, the money they make on album or downloads is miniscule compared to what they make touring. Since Adam’s videos were the big sellers on itunes, you know that it is his performances that will sell. In other words, concert big bucks.

  • Squirrely

****Thanks to his fans who try to take over management and every little detail of his career, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll either end up getting caught having sex with an internet prostitute or limping along in some old tired traveling bà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢way show. Maybe he can hook up with Cats or Les Miz.

Whoa, that is way out of left field. And Broadway is never tiresome, Adam will return to the stage, I think its inevitable, but it will be on his terms. No one can deny this kid is re-writing the rules.

  • HotHotHot

If it’s true, makes you wonder how long his name has been on those copyrights. Of course, copyrights on crappy songs aren’t worth much. And why would anybody believe anything Hecker says?>

  • Calliope

Nah. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s easy to blame the fans for Clay and Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s supposed lack of success. Yeah, most artists, big or small, have their own set of crazy fans. AI does create this atmosphere where fans can let their craziness out in full force. However, it’s only the story when there are no other stories. Clay’s was a bit different since Claymates are so organized (even to this day you can check an internet poll about AI that pertains to Clay and it will be in his favor) and were quite a new phenomenon to AI, so they have this legend factor. Taylor really lacked in any real relevance beyond AI, in my opinion. For now, Adam’s fanbase is not the story and it’s not likely to be since there are other more interesting things about Adam to report on (even stuff that could be construed as fan-related like the Gokey twitter thing and Hecker hoping to cash in on fans are not being reported as fan-related). And, as an Adam fan, he really doesn’t have as coherent of a fanbase as people might think. I go to other sites and people disagree/argue/discuss things and are rarely on the same page. It’s just his fans have a large internet presence.

I’ll believe Adam is being compensated when Adam says he is being compensated. In the meantime, I’ll save my pennies for the AI tour and the CD he is excitedly working on as we speak.

I doubt Adam will announce it, so I guess we will never know for sure

  • Susan M.

Squirrely, why wouldn’t he announce it? If he stands to make an ass-load of money in the deal but holds back out of artistic integrity, then good God, he is 10,000 times more my hero more than he already is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and that’s saying something! (JFK, MLK, Oprah, Angelou, Obama, who?)

Adam originally did these tracks to make ends meet, but that is beyond gutsy to say, “No thanks” to God only knows how much money only because this current product isn’t representing his signature sound and there’s every chance it won’t be a detriment to him. I know the boy has balls, but sheesh.

I was already highly dubious of Hecker’s comments acting like it was soooo obvious he was being compensated. If that was the case, why has he ducked the question in every other statement?

  • http://www.f3-properties.com Animated

It looks like anything that has an ADAM LAMBERT is hot commodity. And there will be fans that just have to have anything Adam. So, some sales will happen.

If Adam’s legal team is working overtime, they will make sure he gets his legal dues on these things. From what I understand there is such a thing as residual earnings, that means artists all get a share as long as their product continue to sell.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Think of residual earnings like an actor’s, writer’s or musician’s royalties. They create a piece of work, get paid for it and whenever it gets sold in the future they get a taste of the profits. Many a one-hit-wonder is living just fine off of their royalties.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I hope this happens for Adam. His vocal talent is so distinct that even with a lame song or arrangement, a recording may still get some sales. He should get his fair share.

Although this is a nuisance, but ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the reality. There will be many who will be cashing in on Adam. The print, TV, internet media have already done their share, so now the recording and photo industry will do their tricks to earn based on Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s past endeavors.

Nutty but that is how this industry works.

What we can do is go, on a personal decision basis, if we think Adam will benefit then maybe we should support. If it smells fishy, better not touch it ,and leave it to rot by itself. We can support to the skies the legitimate recordings from hereon.

He said Lambert attended a post-production session last month, as “American Idol” reached its climax, and that the singer was “blown away” by what he heard. . . .

Hecker denied some fans’ assertions that Lambert was being ripped off, saying the singer stands to make “a ton of money” through a royalties arrangement commensurate with deals for major artists. Lambert will not only receive songwriting royalties, but he also co-owns the copyrights with Wilshire, Hecker said.

I need a translator for some of these statements attributed to Hecker, i.e. “post-production session?” Last month? Really?? Wasn’t Adam just a tad busy in May? A “royalties arrangement?” “A ton of money?” I’m not buying it. Maybe Hecker started agitating about this as Adam continued to perform well on Idol and shortly before the Finale, Adam (and his advisors) attended a meeting to try to talk these sleazebuckets out of moving ahead with this renegade album. Was that the meeting? By “declaring” Adam the co-songwriter (because he changed a few notes), are they now bound to pay him some standard royalty?

IDK, this isn’t my profession, but something smells really rotten here and I think Hecker is taking little slivers of the truth and weaving a big ole fish tale. I think the only people who stand to make any real money off of this project are Hecker and gang.

  • Sunn

    Never mind.

  • Tess

HiFi had absolutely nothing to do with the recording of this album. They BOUGHT the session songs from Wilshire (who seems to be unavailable for comment. Also, singers under contract to a recording studio probably don’t see much money from an initial album since the profits need to go back into the company to offset the costs associated with the production and the marketing of said product. That is why an Artist will bust their butt to do all the radio and tv shows and AOL sessions and anything else they can do to market the song.

Besides, Hecker can say anything he wants because he is acting on the word of Wilshire. I am sure if a meeting took place it was Wilshire trying to sell some of the work back to 19 for their future use and was probably told “no thanks”.

Now everything I have written is pure speculation but I have been trying to do a lot of research on the subject and these are my best conclusions. Bottom line for me is, until Adam says to please support him and purchase this stuff I won’t do it. Here is a quote on some of my research.

The majority of session singers are self-employed. Each job pays a seperate fee that is negotiated between you and the employer, who pays the session musicians for their time regardless of wether the track is released or used by the client who commissioned it from the studio. This is usually a one off fee even in the case of tracks you record that subsequently become popular, unless a repeat fee or percentage agreement has been previously agreed between you.

Also, I really think Adam’s fans have been pretty respectful through this process. They are leaving fairly intelligent comments on websites that are mostly about the fact that they are respecting Adam’s wishes.

  • IndyMuse

Snood199, Time of My Life never ceased to chart, and it just continues to sell copies and be used for things like graduations. It was not all that affected by the AI season. In fact, it is still highly ranked on AC stations as a recurrent song. It is the little song that won’t quit, like it or not.

  • snood199

Ahh, I hadn’t realized. I guess the graduation/ other ceremonial use makes sense there. As long as No Boundaries isn’t still up there this time next year.

  • 408cheryl

OMG, “WANT” in iTunes is now on top #46…who’s buying???

  • adamlover

i am going to buy it, i am not up on everything but as an adam fan i think that the more people who buy his music, the better.

  • http://none tamie2785

You know what guys?Maybe it only shows(I’m pertaining to Adam’s good voice quality)to every one of us that Adam can sing anything, Whether it’s rock, ballad, pop…. and even this “Want” sounds good because adam sang it..and because of this Adam proves what a versatile singer he is….And I’m glad that lots of people love Adam Lambert not only in U.S but also here in the Phils.
