The Official Nielsen Soundscan numbers are out. It’s Official. Adam Lambert has the #1 album of the week.

Adam Lambert’s Trespassing blew past the competition to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 this week. The singer’s second album sold 77,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, putting him 14,000 ahead of Adele’s 21 for the week and 23,000 ahead of the No. 3 album, Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away.

I’m not MJ, but I do know that there is some sort of rule where you can’t post more than one or two paragraphs from any publication.   There was some problems a couple of years back with blogs getting sued for that.   I think the rule is one paragraph and a link.   It doesn’t matter what the content is, it is some sort of legal issue.   I could be wrong on the exact details, but that is what I am remembering.

And the guy sells merchandise…. holy cow….I haven’t been to a Glambert gathering yet where people aren’t totally decked out in official merchandise. At a listening party in Toronto last week the colours were totally bumblebee and I saw Trespassing dog tags and black and yellow nailpolish. Hilarious.

No need to feel sorry or worried … between Queen gigs and people like Slash and Elton John rooting for him, Adam could problaby live comfortably on 3  or 4 guest gigs a year. In the end, he’ll make top 10% of Idols in terms of success and comfortable living.

I am a former retail buyer and I crunched a lot of numbers based on FYE CD sales, Glam Nation DVD sales, FYE acoustic CD sales and the number of paid downloads for BTIKM (66,000). Most of the maths I applied led to around 80,000.

RCA was obviously expecting lower because both Amazon and his fan site ran out of CD’s at the end of last week. Also, BB mid-week said that Adam was performing at the top end of expectations.

A 100,000 unit sale debut was optimistic, espcially based on the time of year.

He did get a lot of promo, especially compared to other Idols releasing at the moment but he hasn’t been on Letterman or any of the morning shows this time around. I think that’s what people are talking about.

Adam was on GMA last monday.  His promo has been better than, for example, Kris and Haley, but no where near as good as Carrie and Kelly this era.  But thats to be expected.  His management did a good job with print promo — getting articles in Time, Rolling Stone, interviews with LA Times , Village Voice, Billboard etc. And he did a lot of magazines and other print in Europe as well.  TV has been lacking this time around…Ellen and Leno were way back in January, only Kimmel, GMA and Idol (and Chelsea lately but that was interview only) around release week (and Kimmel was 2 weeks prior). But obviously Idol was the highest rated program he could have been on release week.

“he’ll make top 10% of Idols in terms of success and comfortable living.”
Have you seen the latest “where are they now” articles with respect to idol finalists?  Top 10% is not much of a complement.
I would guess Adam is more like top 3-5%.  Very few have done better recording-wise.  Kelly, Carrie, and Daughtry, are the only ones I can think of.  There might be a couple others.  But that’s about it.

Lol, in comparison with Idols releasing at the moment, yes. Looking at the big picture, though? Not at all.

Just want to add my Congratulations to Adam and his team. I think they have done a fine job so far with promo etc… Adam has been a busy boy. Im not sure how much more promo he could have fit in. He seriously has been uber busy for the last 5 months. Still hoping radio will kick in for him. We all know how important that is. Fingers crossed. Its been a fantastic week and there are many more highs to come. Its not easy out there in the music business so any #1BB is fantastic. Once again… Congrats Adam!

Well, I’m happy and sad here. Happy Adam can lay claim to a number one album. Good job. Sad it’s with 77k. And without a lot of radioplay for his latest single, after the first one went nowhere with sales, not sure this album is going to have good legs. So that second week drop might be painful as a percentage and number. Especially considering the opening number, wasn’t stellar.

But hey, though I don’t agree on the second single either (seriously RCA? seriously?) maybe it can get a bit more traction on radio and that can translate to sales of it, and hopefully, ultimately, album sales. But we’ll see. I mean, I hope, but I’m not terribly hopeful.

I love Adam, so I hope this works out for him.

What would you consider a successful album – saleswise, etc.?   (including non-USA)

But you have hope for the future for others who are opening with 15-20K? What makes an album that is selling four times as much as the other ones less hopeful? Not to mention the fact that Trespassing was #1 (or in the Top 5) in several countries other than the US.

Congrats to Adam! A number one album is a number one album-no one can take that away from him.  I’m happy for him-it’s a great accomplishment and he and his fans should feel proud.

Not sure what others who are projected to open with 15-20K have to do with how this album fares going forward.  It might make fans feel better about things but again-it’s just one week.  Adam has had some pretty decent promo leading up to the album release but that will eventually die down.  For this album to have “legs”, he’s going to need a strong radio presence and a hit single.  Otherwise, the chances that this album will continue to sell at a decent clip are not good.  The current single is moving in the right direction but things will definitely have to pick up in the next few weeks.  The video for NCOE looks intriguing-that could help generate sales but he’s still going to need a strong radio hit.  The great thing about debuting #1 on Billboard is that the pub surrounding that accomplishment can generate more interest in the album.   Casual buyers may be more inclined to check Trespassing out.

My question remains unanswered (the one to Truthiness2U) – what would be considered a successful album?  How many does he have to sell?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

My question was directed at T2U. The OP had made the comment that there was hope for the future for those who opened with 15-20K, but they weren’t terribly hopeful for Adam who opened with 77K. I wanted to know the reasoning behind that series of statements.

It would seem that if there was little hope for an artist who opened with 77K with good international sales, there would be close to no hope for an artist that opened with 15-20K without any international sales to speak of.

Oh threads back open. CONGRATULATIONS to Adam on his first #1!!!

I don’t have any idea how many albums sold in other countries in his debut week, but just in US sales so far the album grossed nearly 1mil dollars. Add the numbers from other countries, we could be talking another mil or two. I think RCA  is more than pleased with the numbers as the album more than paid for itself in the first week, I would think. So to anyone that is not impressed with the numbers I think Adam and the label are pleased as punch.

How about that.  The album is not selling.  120K or so after a month is not a good sign for gold.
