Will Adam get some kind of a plaque with a little ceremony? I hope so. I remember that video of Rolling Stone giving him the framed cover. It was so cute to see the wonderment on his face! What??????? as he would say.

Presenting to him on-stage maybe at Fantasy Springs would be great.

No plaque for this — that was already in the works.

But tomorrow we can finally say that Adam officially had retail sales of over 500,000 units of FYE in the US. And if HDD is right and FYE sold over 13K units last week, then Adam is clearly off the typical Idol album sales pattern and must be selling “outside the Idol bubble”.

The “Gold Record” plaque is issued by the RIAA and it is for wholesale sales. FYE went RIAA gold already — probably sometime in December. There is a certification process and then they look for an event to present it at. But even in today’s dreary record world, the first really big “plaque milestone’ is Platinum at 1 million records.

The Nielsen Soundscan count is retail sales that meet certain criteria — must be sold in an authorized retail location in the US [including online shipped to US address purchased with US addressed payment method], sold by a retailer who reports to Soundscan, sold after the official on-sale date, and sold for at least 50% of the MSRP. The Nielsen Soundscan total is usually about 90% to 95% of retail sales.

Some sales are not classified as retail sales. The largest two categories are record club sales and outlet store sales [Ross, Big Lots, local flea market, and so on.] But all of these sales count for RIAA.

He’ll be okay.

Good for him on his gold album. He’s worked his butt off physically and mentally for the last year and it’s well deserved.

A poster upthread commented on the Larry Flick twitter comments about fans spamming him who aren’t regular listeners. I recall that whole ordeal. He went on to say that when it happens, he stops playing the artist. This all supports my earlier post today of WTF? So go ahead and punish the artist for something they have no control over. Go ahead and relish in the benefits of getting these artists on your show…enjoying all of the additional traffic, but then slap them in the face when the fans dare show a level of interest or attitude that doesn’t suit you. When stepping back, taking a breath, and looking at all of this today, it occurred to me how ridiculous the level of control is that these people have over an artist’s success. In Adam’s case, his album is now gold…WWFM is climbing nicely up the charts, but yet I have no doubt his label is working behind the scenes still kissing the butts of a few large holdouts to add him. Adam even mentioned in the front porch interview that you have to please the PD’s with your single choices. And why is that? Shouldn’t the PD’s be pleasing us? Aren’t we the ones supporting them and their paycheck? Hmmm……

Probably won’t happen. Album has to be submitted to RIAA by the record company, then audited (often takes months). Doesn’t happen overnight.
