Adam Lambert returned to Washington DC’s 9:30 Club last night (Sept 26) for a benefit show for “Marylanders for Marriage Equality”, an organization devoted to getting the vote out in support of Question 6, the referendum on Maryland’s Civil Marriage Protection Act.

Before singing “Outlaws of Love”, a song he co-wrote about the outsider status of the LGBT community, he gave an impassioned speech, urging the passage of Question 6.

“Question 6 isn’t something that’s asking me whether or not you’re a Democrat or a Republican,” said Adam

“Marriage equality…is a human-rights issue—it’s nonpartisan,” He added “and I think it should bring people together, which is what I’m all about.”

“Whether I was straight or gay, I would still support this issue because it’s a human issue.”

Watch Adam speak on Question 6 before performing “Outlaws of Love.”

Couldn’t agree with Adam more. He stated it very well. Marriage has become so much of a legal contract that denying it’s legal benefits to all is not what our constitution or country stands for. It’s equal rights for all. I hope Maryland joins my state  of Iowa in recognizing gay marriage.

Adam did a nice job both with the speech and the song.

Re the song, I thought the music overpowered him just a bit at the beginning…  Maybe his mic needed to be turned up a bit, seems it was adjusted better as the song went on…

I wish I could have gone to the concert last night. It was so short notice I could not take the time off from work. I plan vote for question 6, I hope a lot of Marylander’s join me.

As a marylander, a gay man, and an Adam fan, I was bummed when I couldn’t go to this concert. Tickets were too expensive. But I really am glad to see that marriage equality is winning in the polls at the moment, and that Adam would perform at a benefit like this.

Beautiful. All of it. But someone needs to turn down the mics of the backup singers.

One thing I loved about his speech is that it wasn’t delivered like a speech at all.  He wasn’t trying to be an orator; he wasn’t standing on a pulpit delivering a fire-and-brimstone sermon.  It was more like he was just talking with friends.  But at the same time, he did a fantastic job of framing marriage equality as not a political issue, not a moral issue, not a religious issue…but, quite simply, as a human rights issue.  It was a lovely talk, and it preceded a lovely performance of a lovely song.

Beautiful all around – including how he looked. #shallow

I would love to see Maryland be the first state to vote FOR marriage equality.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Adam doesn’t just talk the talk, but he walks the walk.   His speech was  right on target and to the point.  I think brother Neil would be proud.   Being the “gay’ poster boy hasn’t helped Adam in the US, but one must admire that he stands behind who he is and is honest about it.

Adam did a great job talking about Question 6. And he’s right, it doesn’t have anything to do with partisan politics or even with religion, really. Are you for equal rights for everyone or not?

    The performance was also wonderful.

I’m so proud to be a fan of this man.

I don’t know what the background was to the planning of this event or in booking him, but it was announced pretty close to the date, the tickets were pricey, yes it was a fundraiser, but, it also was planned on a major Jewish Holiday. I just think that with more advance notice, tickets priced to sell, and maybe not on a Holiday, he could have filled the venue and raised more money for the cause.

In any case, he was eloquent, spoke well to the point, looked fabulous, and seems much more comfortable being “political” than ever.

I just am so proud to be a fan of the man.

oh, he’s a beauty. He helped me talk to my children about gay people and they love him and are sooooo open about all people.  Thanks Adam!!!

I’m delighted that Adam did this fundraiser for this important cause. It’s so cool that he is feeling more comfortable leaning into the sociopolitical arena with regard to gay rights and marriage equality issues, because he is so articulate and he offers a useful and persuasive perspective.

His remarks were impassioned and on point, and his performance of Outlaws of Love was gorgeous. There could not be a better song to go with the occasion and the cause than OOL.

    Thanks for posting this, MJ.

And go Question 6! I really hope it passes!

A great advocate for gay marriage – would be hard to find a better.

beautiful words and beautiful song from a beautiful man…

I am so impressed with Adam’s little speech. He probably has no idea how much he enlightened people. I think most people believe they have no choice but to vote Democrat if they want gay people to have equal rights. But the truth is there are many people who believe in fiscal responsibility, who are more inclined to vote Republican, but who fully support gay marriage. It’s not a cut and dry issue, and Adam expressed himself beautifully.  He is to be applauded for his simple but powerful message, which supports everyone and condemns no one.

    Nicely done.

Adam speaks and sings from his heart and I love that he presents this issue for what it is ‘a human rights issue’ – how can anyone not support equal rights for everyone.  Adam is an excellent advocate for marriage equality and I too am so proud to be a fan of his.  Everytime he sings “Outlaws of Love” it pulls at my heart strings.  Thank you Adam for taking on a role that you never really applied for but accepted because you live every day of your life being denied your full equal rights and so you are able to speak on this issue with your heart and soul.  Thank you for bringing this equal rights awareness to people.  You are an excellent spokesperson and role model.  Excellent job!

During the entire evening he was trying to get the sound right.  From our vantage point, we could see that Adam left the stage just to talk to the sound guys more than once. The one week notice and fly-in/fly-out gave them very little time to rehearse with the sound crew at 9:30 Club, which for Adam, means getting the sound p.e.r.f.e.c.t.  His simpatico band can follow him musically anywhere he goes but both the acoustics and the sound engineers are different at each venue.

Still, even after the next 100 concerts I know I’ll remember this night with Adam on stage, competely loose and unfiltered (never thought Rap would pass those lips!) was one of the best.

Now Marylanders, (me too) talk to your friends and coworkers and get the vote out for Question 6.  Adam is of course right…it’s a matter of human rights and dignity and fairness.  Marriage is a legal contract with legal obligations as well as privileges.  No second class citizens in the USA please.  And don’t allow control of our govt for anyone’s religious belief, not even yours or mine.
