Adam Lambert tweeted, “Exciting news! I will be returning to American Idol on May 17 to perform my new single “Never Close Our Eyes”! @americanidol

The appearance will be a few days after of the release of his forthcoming album, Trespassing on May 17.

That week, the Top 3 will be duking it out on stage to see who will make the finals the following week.  Adam will be sharing screentime, most likely with Idol hometown visits!  Top 3 is easily my favorite results show of the entire season.  It should be a good one.

I expect NCOE to get a nice bump from Adam’s Idol appearance, but not a huge one. Most of his hardcore fanbase likely already has bought the song, and iTunes no longer counts multiple sales of the same single/album by the same purchaser — you can download the song again for free, but it won’t count toward his sales.

I would expect his perfomance to have much more of an impact on his album sales.

The song he is performing on May 10 is a new song that will be on his next album, which he is working on now.

That’s not out or coming out in the near future.  So, I see Cook’s performance as a waste of a slot.  Yeah, he’s getting that preferential treatment, too.

I’ll be surprised if the new song David is going to sing isnt put on on iTunes for sale. Other than that, well the executive producer of AI being your manager obviously has its perks. Preferential treatment? Well what else is new. Simon always loved David, and Fuller can pretty give a performance slot to whoever he wants.

Old Idols performing on AI serves as a good reminder to the more casual fans who dont follow them but may have been a fan or voted when they were on the show. My mom loved Scotty and voted for him yet didnt even know he had new music out until his AI appearance. She also liked Adam and doesnt follow him closely but I bet she’ll order his album after he performs.

He’s a former Idol winner, I don’t see that as preferential treatment. If there is anyone who should perform on Idol, the winners should be first in line. I might not be a fan of all the winners, but I wouldn’t begrudge them performing over others who didn’t win.

I actually think Adam’s going to get a nice bump for both NCOE and Trespassing. NCOE isn’t yet receiving much radio play, and it will be the first time most AI viewers will be hearing it.  It’s a really great song and hopefully viewers will want to download it.

When Adam performed WWFM on AI, there were 100,000+ downloads that week and that was for a song that was nearing its peak.  I’m not saying that NCOE will sell as many (although it would be nice), but  I do think it’s going to get a really nice bump.

Whoever is responsible for scheduling Adam’s performance the week of Trespassing’s release, I say well done!

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone who could perform in that spot without it being preferential treatment?

Should Fantasia always take preference over Hudson, an Academy Award winner? Should Taylor Hicks always take preference over Daughtry? Why? Idol’s primary claim to fame is that it produces performers who succeed in the “real world.” Whether those performers win, or come in seventh, the way Hudson did, really does not matter.

@Julia Very true. In either case, it wouldn’t hurt for radio to spin ncoe.

Actually, I think the strategy at this point performing during album drop week with a single that only has fledgeling radio play so far is the hope that the performance primarily drives some additional album sales, not single sales. I mean, I’m sure they’d be happy if the single got a bump, but they’d rather casual fans plunk down their money for the whole album.

From what David said, the song will be released as a single, because he said they will see if it gains traction, to me that means if it sells and possibly gets radio play. I’m sure we’ll know soon.

And singles are sometimes released months ahead of the album.   Even Adam released BTIKM 6 months before the album was coming out, without much definate information.

I am excited and elated to be see my Cookie and Adam performing on Idol.
Though very different they both have incredible tenor voices.

Hopefully both of their songs do well on Itunes.  I have preorded Trespassing and like all the snippets I have heard.

Anxiously, waiting for David’s next cd.

After Cook all of the winners who currently have music out have already performed on Idol this season except for Kelly and she will most likely perform on the finale. As someone else said, after the confetti is cleaned up it really doesn’t matter who won or came in 2nd, 3rd, 7th, etc. Idol is a business franchise and they like to celebrate and showcase former Idol alum who have achieved success regardless of where they finished on the show. It gives the current contestants a chance to see how the post-Idol dreams can be realized and it also gives the former Idols a chance to showcase their new music.

If the former winners careers are doing so poorly that they NEED Idol to “endorse” them then that’s a pretty clear sign that they have failed to transition out of the Idol bubble into the real world of music.

Cook was lucky to get that performance spot given his current situation.

It is highly likely that many who turned away from Glambert may come back
when they see Adam as he is now and hear his new music.

Ummm huh? What “many who turned away from Glambert”? Adam’s fanbase has grown exponentially since his time on Idol. And what do you mean “dialed it back”? Adam’s look evolves and he looked very ‘stripped back’ when he performed Aftermath on Idol last year then he went to Russia and did a concert wearing skin-tight leather pants, a belt made out of bullets and 4 inch wedge boots. He smeared his eyeliner down his face, strutted all over the stage and provided ample tongue and hip thrusts.

Not only does he not need fans who judge him on such a superficial level he doesn’t want fans like that. Yes he’s trying to appeal to the masses but by no stretch of the imagination has he “dialed it back” to send out the message that he is going to ‘conform’ and be ‘normal’ because he’s neither of those things. HE IS ADAM as he was then, as he is now and as however he may be in the future. Don’t ever think you’ve got him figured out :)

Scotty has already been on this season. But I’m sure he will be on the finale since he is the reigning champ.

Don’t follow him at all but from what I see on the Idol Chatter spins/sales lists his latest single isn’t taking off like the first 2 did. Maybe it could use an ‘Idol bump’.

Kimmel performance was pretty darn close to perfect. I LOVED the way the production built and the band was amazing. I think Adam will not stray too far away from that on Idol but he will probably make the beginning intro more dramatic and a little slower similar to what he did with WWFM in 2010.

I’ve been watching Idol religiously since season 2 and with the exception of season 3 and seasons 9 & 10 my favorite has always been in not only the top 3 but also the top 2. 3 of them were from my hometown so I got to participate in the hometown visits on Friday and then watch them on the results shows the next week.
