Over the weekend, I posted some scans from Adam Lambert’s interview and photo spread in the November issue of Details magazine and was promptly notified by Conde Naste’s PR peeps to take them down, with the promise I would receive official materials at the right time.

That time has come.   Click on the jump to check out the racy (and beautiful) photos from Adam’s Details photo spread. Adam’s sexy romp with a naked female model (that’s something new!) is setting his female fans all atwitter.   (Photo credit: Alexei Hay for Details)

Also, there are even more photos accompanying the full interview at Detail’s website, HERE.   In the interview, Adam candidly recalls dark periods of his life, fueled by sex and drug use.

In other news:

Why Does Every Woman in America Want to Sleep with the American Idol?

The re-write of S8 is complete!

And, no, not every woman wants to sleep with Adam Lambert. I think he’s fabulous, but sleep with him? Uh, not ever.

Hi Online! I will always remember you from your hysterically funny review when you and your mom went to the concert. I sent to my mom and she LOL’d along with me.

We all have our glitter umbrellas and glitterboots on, while drinking Glittertini’s and Lambertini’s, shaken and stirred, toasting HBIC!

  • stopthemusic

It looks like they moved up the releases (single, MV) because of the leak. Adam fans should be thanking the person at RCA who screwed that one up lol.

  • asifclueless

A lot of great news from Adam.
I’m happy, very, very happy. :)

    Adam, sweetheart, you deserve it.

I hate being at work and not having access to most websites. and to boot I have a dinner that I have to go to tonite (can’t blow it off, I’m on the program). Anyway, will have fun in the glitter shower online when I get home.

Yeah for Adam – he must be so excited!

TfM is now #12 iTunes US — getting very close to the Top 10!!!

    #2 on Amazon!!

NO FAT CHANCE FOR ME TO SLEEP WITH HIM.
But I want to HUG and CUDDLE with him.

I don ´t know what to read, where to post. So many Adam news. No sleep tonight to get to see the TfM video when somebody posts it to youtube.

Adam so greatly deserves all this!!!

Did I read last night that TfM was not going to go up the charts? ;-)

Just a comment about iTunes – TfM is at #21 in the Overall Top 100, and has moved up to #10 in Pop songs.

  • stopthemusic

rowenaanie, your info is outdated. TFM is #12 overall, #9 pop.

  • ravengirl

I cannot tell you how exciting this is to watch this happen for Adam. It’s like a fricking made for TV movie with extra sparkle and sexiness. I’m so thrilled TFM is zipping up the charts. So thrilled about even more Details beauty. So thrilled about debut of vid. So thrilled about Oprah. So thrilled about Gaga. This AdamStorm has exceeded any weather forecast I was aware of.
It’s good to be an Adam fan.

  • Susan M.

OMG, that cover looks even more beautiful than it did before. Great color choice for the masthead. His eyes? *DIES*

And I’ve already wore out the slide show and video. *THUD*

    Counting the minutes until midnight.

    TfM No. 13? Squeeee!!!

We’re caught in a glitter storm for sure!!

  • Tess

When Adam’s song hits #1 I’ll take orders for Hagen Das. It’s on sale at my grocery store this week. Did anyone take a peak inside the bag and figure out Adam’s favorite flavor?

Loved the Details interview…he seemed so young and boyish there…and so very excited. He comes off as so “together” but sometimes that kid in his cape running around his house just shines through. Thanks Opie/Adam your are a pleasure.

  • weareallinnocent

Ok, I’ve only read this update on mjs and nothing more, as I’ve been travelling and generally busy IRL, but… I’m the biggest sap on the planet apparently cuz I’m getting choked up reading all of what is happening for Adam right now. Gosh, I need to get a grip!

I think it was the Lady GaGa collab that pushed me over the edge…

A great congrats to Adam, who imo deserves all of the good that is coming his way right now. Very exciting and how rewarding it must be for him right now! WhooHooo~

  • ljsmack

Wow. Reminds me of those vids of blonde surfer Adam he has caught a huge wave this time and I hope he rides it for all it’s worth. I’m just delighted to watch. Hey how many people can say that they did all of their experimentation, learned from it, and kept honing his talent and believing in himself. All by the age of 27! What a wonderful payoff for all of us!

  • yinyang

What time zone for the video debut? Eastern time (I hope :) )?

it is such a great time to be an adam fan…the moment i heard his voice during hollywood week i have been hooked…i cant remember when i was captivated and engrossed in a performer. i just adore him…and his talent just blows me away.

  • KayGee

Adam is soooooooooooooooooooooooo SEXY-HOT…he exudes sexiness in all those pictures, wish I were that model, or the person he speaks of in the article who got to kiss him on the neck…

May I have some Hagan Das in advance, so I will be ready to eat it when Adam hits #1? ;)

I think he said he likes this fancy kind, that no one ever heard of. Who wants to do a Google search?

BTW, they are playing Cook’s ToML right now on Slacker Radio, and I’m thinking this is ADAM’s Time of His Life. (Plus I love that song. So it makes me happy to hear it. And it has TIME in it, too. ;) )

  • twinkle

hey Jim! i dont think you were implying it, but your comment made me worry they had ripped adam for the shoot but the post over there seems snarky but generally supportive… with the kd lang comment thrown in there at the end.

  • suebrody

I had to stay up late last night to buy TfM and now I have to stay up to see the video?

DAMMIT, ADAM, I need my sleep!

Has there ever been a sharp climb like this. I am flailing in all sorts of ways…and that interview at Details…God almighty.

Will set Oprah for the 28th when I get home. Have ET set for tonight (and Access Hollywood, just in case we get more from Laura).

Oh, I prayed so hard for this Adam Storm–the Roadblock was a nasty tease–but here it is!!!

  • hypnoticwhisper

“There’s a feeling of entitlement [with the fans] because they voted to get us where we are,” he says, just a trifle irritated. “But you know what? I am responsible for what I created on that show’”you voted for what I created, and thank you, but I created it, you didn’t.”

I knew Adam was candid, but wow…..

I understand where he’s coming from but other people might take that the wrong way.

  • Gigi3

YAY ADAM STORM!! Photoshoot is so much fun, however I wish I didn’t read DLISTED’s take on it, because now all I can see is KD Lang and Cindy Crawford. LOL.

Jambajim is so passive aggressive imo. LOL He says something nice about Adam, but always with a back handed dig. “I LOVE TFM but my wife despises it” , etc.

It’s okay Jim, you don’t have to like it!!

MJ- maybe you can help….is it 12:00 est? Your always so on the ball.

I like the Gucci tshirt ones. Very James Dean. Adam is a chameleon!

  • SpenserJ

Jambajim is so passive aggressive imo.

Not passive aggressive to me at all. Seems to me he’s just stating the opinions of his household.

I knew Adam was candid, but wow’ ¦..

I understand where he’s coming from but other people might take that the wrong way.

I have to agree with Adam on that one. I would guess that they’re all thinking it, but not many of them have the balls to say it. And, it really needs to be said.

  • sma11ie

TFM is now 9th on the Canadian itunes pop chart.

You have no idea how ridiculously happy I am that when I pull up the page I don’t have to open the chart – it is now right there on the side bar in the top 10.

  • Gigi3

Hi Jim! [waves]. Don’t worry, not all of us think you’re passive-aggressive LOL.

I don’t think Jim cares what I think. I don’t care what he thinks either. Read what I said above: “It’s okay Jim, you don’t have to like it!!”

But I’m entitled to my opinion. As is Jim. And all of you.

  • FifthHouseSun

Don’t know if there is any way to check this. But of the new songs out today, is anything selling as fast as Adam Lambert?

None of the “New & Noteworthy” tracks on iTunes are.

Jim! Did you get tired of DM’ing me and me tweeting you on Twitter? Cause, really, *I* was okay with it… ;)

Jim, is Tess okay with it TfM yet? Cause pretty much the rest of the word is, lol.

BTW, I am a big fan of kd lang! :)

I do think Adam needs to be little careful…well, no, not now he doesn’t. He is doing just fine, and as usual, being entirely candid. If you don’t like him, don’t buy the magazines he is in, the albums he makes (and the videos), the interviews and the AMAs and GMAs…

Yes, I said James Dean last night. Not Elvis, people, JAMES DEAN.

    *flailing*

ETA: The Huff Post has always been a big fan of Adam’s, b/c he is so candid and they love the liberal. And now they are BIG FANS. lol

LOL Thank you onlinepastrychef! Was it the “whoohoo” at the end or the “gosh” in the beginning of my post that best displayed my maturity? ;-) I’m partial to your glitter umbrella, personally. I’d like to place an order, please! :-)

And, unsurprisingly, I agree with SpenserJ on the entitlement matter. I’ve never ever understood that sentiment, but I’m really glad Adam addressed it directly. His saying it helps them all, imo, and they all do need help (early on) with fan entitlement syndrome! It’s scary out there…

  • twinkle

I have to agree with Adam on that one. I would guess that they’re all thinking it, but not many of them have the balls to say it. And, it really needs to be said.

I agree SpenserJ. between this and “entitlement is not sexy” i hope the fans on the fringe that think they need to be personally thanked and catered to whenever he makes a decision will get the picture. we voted for the product we were presented with. he is responsible for giving us a product that we wanted to vote for.

  • asifclueless

I love Adam and I love his creation. I don’t feel that I own him or he owes me anything.
I love his honesty and integrity. With that it becomes unconditional love. I love him no matter what.

Adam deserves everything coming his way because he has worked hard for it.

    Is TFM #1 now?
    Adam will be on top.
Adam likes to be on top. :)

  • ilovekrisallen39

Hi Jim I just wanted to say I think you so funny and so handsome. And yeah when I see that one picture of James Dean I do see some of Adam. He is such a really goodlooking man. And his so hot. I love reading vampire books, and to me Adam could be one of the guy’s in the pictures they show on a book cover. Tall Dark and Handsome. LOL

  • suebrody

    #9 pop!!!

  • LaurelG

Top Ten of Pop in less than 24 hours is feeling like a deep fanbase.

Especially since it’s had all of, what, 1 or 2 spins on the radio. These are the invested fans. There are several other layers of fandom out there that haven’t been tapped yet.

  • Chicagolaw

I love what Adam said about the entitlement. If some of the OTT Idol audience would just dial it back, it might make it a lot easier for Idol fans in general to be accepted (as opposed to ridiculed). Not to mention it would make life a whole lot less scary for Adam, Kris, etc.

  • hypnoticwhisper

I love how honest and passionate he is. I have a feeling he is going to be huge, possibly iconic, but it’s all happening so fast.

I’m afraid that he will change. I know he is very blunt, but you can tell he is thankful to the fans. However, t he already seems somewhat untouchable and “alien like” Imagine what could happen in a year? It’s exciting and scary all at the same time. I’m afraid he will seem more distant as time goes on.

I don’t want him to think all of his fans are OTT

  • weareallinnocent

As far as HuffPost goes, Adam kissing a girl IS news… Not like those shots of Adam kissing Drake (yawn). :-)

  • Studio57

lol at the headline ABOVE Adam’s Details shoot in Huffpo- that’s the OTHER Adam that was busted for drugs on Big Brother that Rickey tweeted about last night.

Gee, they couldn’t tell he was strung out on drugs?

  • suebrody

    From Adam:

@KrisAllen4Real I love the canyon. That view is sick. How’d your rehearsal go yesterday?9 minutes ago from Echofon in reply to KrisAllen4Real

@Pink jealous. I want to do the yummy too.about 1 hour ago from Echofon in reply to Pink

Okay, I have no idea what the Pink tweet meets lol, but how nice was that to post that to Kris. SO SEE, Adam DOES tweet his Idol buddies!!!

I do not think Adam will change. He seems pretty level headed to me. He talks to Katy Perry and others about this. He was HUGE on the Tour and yet was unusually polite to the interviewers, and has been with the press. So, no, I don’t worry about him. He knows some of his fans are OTT. They have been for a while. I’m not concerned. I just want more ADAM. :)

  • AllenTX

Is DrLuke mixing the song Gaga wrote?

  • auntieaimee

At least he didn’t say “smelly” this time. That was generous of him.

  • FifthHouseSun

I’m afraid he will seem more distant as time goes on.

Actually, we better hope he is. That he interacts with strong and healthy borders. Because he’s a porous guy. He takes on the feelings and mode of his audience, of his interviewers, of his collaborators. (Libra rising, moon, thank heavens, in Aries, in Libra’s 7th house.) And no human being can stay wide open and available in the energetic stream of millions of projections and survive.

Always thought, besides his roadkill childhood, that Michael Jackson’s not knowing what to do with all the zillions of energies and projections swarming all over him all the time, combined with his love of fantasy, made him not know who in the world he was or should be.

  • spring2009

Considering that Adam’s Rolling Stone was the best-selling issue of the year so far, and that interview was never posted by them online, I find it a bit surprising that Details is making this article available for free right off the bat. I think they’re sacrificing a lot of newsstand sales by doing so.

  • suebrody

Ppl (yo) are waiting for Kris to tweet back. Which I am sure he will. In any case, very cool, and thanks for clarifying the Pink comment, b/c I had no idea what that meant. And yes, the tweeters are lurrving their Adam today.

He said that some of his fans were smelly in one of his interviews. I thought that was funny!

I had no idea that Neil coined Glittery Alien from the Planet Fierce. Figures, Negative Neil. So witty.

  • BestAI

I’m afraid he will seem more distant as time goes on.

He needs to be. Assuming he becomes quite a bit more popular beyond his AI fanbase, he can’t be as accessible to his fans like he had been. He would be totally crazy if he does. How would you like it if complete strangers paw you whenever you went out. Then add many dozens to that.

He needs to be. Assuming he becomes quite a bit more popular beyond his AI fanbase, he can’t be as accessible to his fans like he had been.

See, I think lots of AI fans are confused about this. If you want your favorite to be a big star, you also have to accept the fact that he won’t be accessible to you. Big stars do not meet their fans out back after the concert to sign autographs.

Q3 Tess and FHS. Love your informative, interesting posts. Thank you and thank MJ for this outlet without which suebrody might set a twitter record and halfie/hwc and his better half anthrogeek might have to display their snarky humor elsewhere instead of sharing with us.

With the entitled fans pissed and the normal ones saying atta boy… This is my recollection as a (non-stalkeresque, unentitled) Cook fan, so maybe I lack objectivity. :-) IMO, Cook also probably tried to be too nice for too long. Maybe Adam has watched and learned… Regardless, I think both Adam and Cook were exactly right, both with their sentiment and their expression of it.

    ETA: SpenserJ, EXACTLY! :-)

I think they’re sacrificing a lot of newsstand sales by doing so.

There is no doubt that they will sell more than 61,000 copies of the Adam cover of Details at the newstand. Here is their average circulation:

    Total Paid & Verified Subscriptions: 379,241 86%
    Newsstand: 61,600 14%
Total Average Paid Circulation: 440,841 100%
    TOTAL AUDIENCE: 1,254,000

I am fairly certain that this if far more press cover of Details than they have ever gotten before. They must be thrilled. They probably will end up with an audience of 20+ million for this article — and that is priceless exposure. (TV + Newspaper + Magazine + Online = HUGH PR)

Plus, the associated contest is getting lots of coverage. And that means Adam story #2.

Last night I downloaded TFM and listened to it as if I never heard it before. I was up past 2am. With today’s news, I see tonight will be another late one.

I got it this morning as a birthday present. Have been listening all day, enjoying Adam ´s voice with the quality of the recording. I am having a birthday dinner, but I am taking my mobile device with me to follow the storm. Won ´t miss this opportunity to have my friends listen to TfM, and maybe the whole Adam ´s playlist ;-)

In less than 24 hours in the top 10. That ´s our Adam!

    But…. Do I like him?

I know when Adam tweeted “entitlement is not sexy” it caused quite a stir. And didn’t Brian Mansfield come down hard on Adam for “smelly-gate”? I don’t think he is getting a pass at all but I don’t think he cares. Both he and Cook are right. I also think Cook tried to be more PC at first whereas Adam, probably taking his cue from David, has been taking this stance from the get go.

I thought that David Cook got a lot of support for his outburst against the “stalking weirdos” that were following him around. The mixed feelings were more because David’s band members had gotten fairly entangled with some of these “crazies” and so it took a little longer for some people to understand the entire situation.

And there really is a difference between a “fan” and an over-invested entitled fan that thinks a person’s success is solely dependent on them catering to these uber-fans. They really think that fandom makes a star…not the other way around. And that is scary and sad.

  • suebrody

Brian Mansfield is not an Adam fan, and his bloggers really dislike Adam (I mean, it’s pretty pathetic, which is why I never post there anymore). He has yet to weigh in on Adam’s song, and he had tweeted (not DM’ed, tweeted) that he wouldn’t comment on it till he had heard the whole song. Which he has. And unlike pretty much everyone else has remained silent. Either he really doesn’t like it or really doesn’t care or both.

I just discovered that there’s an additional Adam sidebar to the article:

    Adam Lambert’s Fave Eight

Until the end of the month, the idolized rocker will count down his obsessions. Yes, that means you’ll know his preferred eyeliner and condom soon enough.

    8. Musical: Jesus Christ Superstar

“The score is unbelievable. Jesus Christ Superstar was a concept album first, by Andrew Lloyd Weber, before it was ever a musical, so it really has its roots in rock and roll. My dad had the original recording on vinyl, and I used to listen to it in his record player. I think that it has a lot of integrity as a rock piece, and the song “Heaven On Their Minds” is amazing.”

I think David got a pass because he was more PC about it at first, and he still remains approachable. I’m somwhat suprised actually that he hasnt been more stand offish. At one show during his solo tour he waited till like 1 am signing autographs and talking/joking to the fans.

I think Adam took a lesson or two from David.

I’m not ignoring Adams talent sex appeal ( or talented sex appeal) or charisma but I’m in awe of the power of this phenomen. Are you?

I am not particularly surprised, no. The watercooler fascination with Mr. Lambert has been there since Ring of Fire. There are many elements to this public fascination, some of which we are not allowed to discuss at MJ’s.

My theory is that pop music is the singing equivalent of celebrity magazines like People, Entertainment Weekly, etc. Those who have celebrity personas attract interest.

In this case, we have a somewhat unique phenomenom taking place. Mr. Lambert is one of, if not the first, openly gay man to be explicitly marketed as a sex symbol in the United States. The only other name people can come up with is Neil Patrick Harris and it’s debateable whether Doogie Howser was marketed more as a sex symbol or puppy dog. Part of the fascination with Mr. Lambert is that it’s uncharted waters. America doesn’t quite know how to react. Therefore, there’s an edginess or “tension” in the story that is inherently interesting.

From a marketing standpoint, there has never been a new artist who has received the worldwide rollout that is being unleashed between today and November 23rd for Mr. Lambert.

Time for Miracles is featured in the world-wide simultaneous release of the movie This Is It next weekend. That runs for two weeks, promoting the movie 2012, which opens with a world-wide release on November 12-13th, again featuring Mr. Lambert’s hit single from the soundtrack.

Ten days from the opening of that film, Mr. Lambert performs a single from his first album on live national TV at the American Music Awards. Less than an hour after the show ends on the East Coast, his first album goes on sale — to kick off the biggest shopping week of the year.

It will, I suspect, continue to be iinteresting to watch.

ljsmack: I’m wondering if we aren’t witnessing a unique viral ‘ a star is born ‘ blog, YT and Twitter shaped if not ‘created’ moment. I’m not ignoring Adams talent sex appeal ( or talented sex appeal) or charisma but I’m in awe of the power of this phenomen. Are you?

I have been in the marketing, branding and PR business for a very long time — and I have never seen anything like this. Yes, it is unique IMO. And yes Adam has forged a new path to fame — and it did not involve traditional radio. (Now 19/RCA will use Radio and TV to build on that fame.)

Sometimes a singer/entertainer becomes famous at the right time for the culture. Elvis arrived when two things were happening — 1. women were becoming more independent and sexually free and 2. Radio exposed white audiences to authentic (black) Rock & Roll music. Enter Elvis — who was too controversial for radio and had to perform on TV instead, inventing a new path for marketing new artists.

The Beattles failed to sell in the US, couldn’t get airplay, and were considered unsuitable for the US Market — in part because of their haircuts. US chart success came after a 5 minute CBS news broadcast about Beatlemania in the UK triggered requests to radio stations for Beatles songs and great demand, leading Capitol to rush-release “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in December 1963. Less than 2 months later, they gave their first live US television performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, watched by approximately seventy-four million viewers’”about half the population at the time. The Beatles had the right music and the right level of soft anti-establishment attitude to capture a large part of the Baby Boomers.

I am not saying that Adam is Elvis or The Beattles because that level of mass success may not be posible in the current fragmented marketplace for anyone. And who knows how far Adam will go.

But what I do think is that Idol made Adam famous and social networking has continued to build that fame and his fanbase. And this is a new path to fame. And I also think that Adam is culturally relevant as a style icon and as a 21st century sex symbol, and there is a chance that his album may have the right mix of noveau glam electro fusion fun to suit the current recession and war weary world. (2009 is very similar to 1973-1975 which was when glam rock, punk rock and modern dance/electronica hit the mainstream.

Here’s the diff between Cook and Adam:

I went to Cook’s concert (awesome, BTW) in Providence, RI two weekends ago. I was at a pub with a friend eating before the show. Whom did we see right in front of us but DAVID COOK? He was wearing a plaid shirt (ala Kris, lol) and a hat (LOVE HIS HATS), just ordering a drink. Two young girls came over to him and asked to take a picture with him (one had a shirt that read COOK on the back). He politely said no (this may be because he wasn’t feeling well–he was still recovering from tonsilitis-or because he was just hungry). They were disappointed but left him alone. Then he went to eat w/ the boyz at a corner table (but facing the street; don’t know if there were any oglers, but the pub was set off the street).

I met an online friend there with two of her friends. They declined sitting with us and took the table next to David, OF COURSE (they are in their 30s). One was pretty obnoxious and went over to him and asked for his pic or something (I hope he said no, since he was eating and then playing dice with his band members). As he left, I nicely said, Have a nice show, David and he said thank you and left. No hoopla. I can see that happening to Kris or Matt and maybe Danny. I can NOT see that happening to Adam. They are just two types of performers or personalities, and that’s fine. I hope the creepy fans are leaving Cook alone now–I didn’t see anything obnoxious at the venue, which seats 750–but I was talking to one of Ryan Star’s bandmates (whom I thought was Ryan, hee hee) and saw the girls around Ryan (who was VERY polite and signed autographs, etc).

They are going to have very different careers, I believe, both great, just different. And I hope Kris and Allison (and Matt!!!) do as well (#signmattgiraud).

ETA: I think Adam will be more successful over the long term than Kris, but it’s not a competition. Again, their successes will be far different. Kris is very talented, IMO, but not a phenomenon.

I knew Adam was candid, but wow’ ¦..

I understand where he’s coming from but other people might take that the wrong way.

Adam was tweeted quite a bit about this yesterday, nonsense about how the fans put him where he is today. Adam is absolutely correct, we voted for him yes, but – he is who he is no matter how many people voted for him.

Better to get some of these misconceptions out of the way now. The fans didn’t “make” him. He made himself.

I can’t discuss it. I will be put in moderation. You also might see if you can find the video and see the very first question asked of Mr. Lambert in the press conference ten minutes after the finale ended. Those will all provide some context for the early fascination and for what we are seeing now.

I think that Archie’s number is beyond phenomenal and I would be happy if Adam made it to 100,000. Just remember this is domestic sales only…no European or world wide numbers included. Archie came off Idol with tremendous love and affection from his fans and they and the newies he has attracted have been loyal and have dug deep into their pocket books to support him.

Interesting to think about. I honestly don’t know. Archie was quite the highly anticipated tween/teen heartthrob IIRC and he did get to debut the single on Z100, the #1 market. Different economic times too.

If I had to bet, I’d probably lean negatively if we’re comparing US sales only, but adding international? I think Adam just might top that, yes. Maybe wishful thinking… It is an odd song in today’s current trends, after all.

    Q3:

The only quibble I have is that I don’t really see the Lambert phenomenom as being particularly driven by social networking. The YouTube vdeos played a role, but that has been the case with top American Idol contenders for several years now. I don’t see that Lambert has made any particularly strong use of Twitter or Facebook or MySpace. If anything he seemed to use those tools a bit less than other Idol contenders.

I don’t think that TfM is comparable to other Idol alum singles. It is being used to market 2012 — even the iTunes banner was a 2012 ad with a smaller reference to Adam’s song. The song is 4:44 minutes long, not designed for radio airplay and will not be the song Adam is performing to promote his album.

I am generally not a big fan of the Idol Comparison game, but if y’all want to compare, I recommend waiting until Adam releases his TBD single from “For You Entertainment”.

hwc, love your post, as so often do, but gotta go with something close to “Earth-shattering” about Adam being the first openly gay sex symbol with mainstream power. In the same year Prop 8 deludes into passing? With DADT still on the books?

It’s a social change of such magnitude, pretty much zero of the big progressive blogs have even noticed. Because so much ignorance still hogs the news. And the legal structure is way behind ever-changing American opinion. People who tried raising the significance of Adam’s popularity on the otherwise forward-looking & fascinating DailyKos made no inroads.

But the realization that any number of conference rooms will be happily considering this proudly gay man as product endorser BECAUSE he is scorchingly sexy and intensely masculine almost makes me think the revolution will be televised. Actually has been – on America’s favorite television show.

  • Tess

So, Adam may not break any sales records, but that won’t hurt his stardom one bit

Absolutely, this! Some entertainers live and die by sales for their albums and singles. They don’t have the ability, the fan base, or (face it) the celebritism to go beyond the envelope. Adam is a “package” and, that isn’t the easiest thing to find these days. Some singers put out georgeous music, but are so bland that NO ONE wants to stay up and watch them on a talk show or spend $100 for a concert ticket or fork down $10 for a magazine where they are featured (so they don’t get these kind of gigs).

As much as many many peep think that its all about the music are only burying their heads in the sand. Some of the most popular and biggest money makers put out pretty mediocre music and they survive in the business their entire lives. Having a nice voice and singing well isn’t a path to instant success…actually, far from it.

  • hwc

It’s a social change of such magnitude, pretty much zero of the big progressive blogs have even noticed.

But the realization that any number of conference rooms will be happily considering this proudly gay man as product endorser BECAUSE he is scorchingly sexy and intensely masculine almost makes me think the revolution will be televised. Actually has been ‘“ on America’s favorite television show.

Which is even more interesting given that the wink and chuckle “gay joke” has been a weekly staple of the show for its first seven seasons.

Q3: The only quibble I have is that I don’t really see the Lambert phenomenom as being particularly driven by social networking. The YouTube vdeos played a role, but that has been the case with top American Idol contenders for several years now. I don’t see that Lambert has made any particularly strong use of Twitter or Facebook or MySpace. If anything he seemed to use those tools a bit less than other Idol contenders.

Only a quibble — today is getting better all the time!

The Beatles broke thru in the US because a teenage girl in Washington DC saw the CBS News report about The Beatles and called the local radio station to request a Beatles song (a UK import — very unlikely to be played AM radio station in 1963). People heard it and more girls called in requests and it began.

Adam didn’t orchestrate the social networking that drove his fame, his fans did. They organized online in literally thousands of communities across the globe — and they have built very deep relationships with other fans. Adam, the media and fans gave these communities enough fuel to keep the fire burning all summer. And last week, when the active marketing of Adam began, the communities were already established and waiting for it. This is not unique to Adam, it is part of the whole Idol process. But the strength of the relationships that fans have with each other and with Adam is unique.

You can inform people through social networks but it is difficult to establish personal relationships between a celebrity and fans thru digital media. I spend most of my RL time working in the area of user/customer experience management, virtual-mass media integration and brand messaging. I have been lucky enough to be working on a project that involves celebrity brands right now — and Adam happened to be on the celebrity list. It is private research but I can say that the Adam numbers are unique and so stunning/unheard of that we are back in the field doing confirmation work. But right now it is either a statistical outlier that will not be confirmed in the 2nd set of interview OR he really is Sunn’s “Black Swan”. As an analyst, I’m not taking a position on this one.

  • FifthHouseSun

in part because of their haircuts. US chart success came after a 5 minute CBS news broadcast about Beatlemania in the UK

And the Ed Sullivan show you so rightly mention. All as viral as the 1960′s could get. And the same kind of “grassroots” momentum. Females taking one look at those haircuts, that charisma, that talent, seeing something they’d never seen before and screaming “More, more, a thousand times, more!”

Great post, Q3. I’m right there with you in the never seen anything like this before category.

And think that a big part of that is the technological aspects. The cheap, swift power and proliferation of technology has created the “perfect timing” in society you mention about all phenoms for Adam. The community and echo and expansion powers of the web and Twitter combined with TV, and the cheap easy access to video and instant interaction, are turning Adam’s insane talent and pheremones into global sensation. Like Elvis, and the Beatles, it’s bottom-up marketing. The corporations aren’t in charge. (Obligatory “R.U.KiddingMe???” reference to AO’s templatey, unreadable, Question of last summer’s Day video, 2002 style presence)

If Paul McCartney & John Lennon had had the internet, they would have busted it many times over. Hard Day’s Night is one of the best movies ever made. Imagine if Lester had been able to post it in little segments on the web.

Imagine if downloads had been available right after the Ed Sullivan show? Not just server crashes, blackouts would have ensued.

I, for one, like how Adam repeatedly acknowledges that he is Jewish’ ¦.it may not seem like a big deal in major urban areas like nyc and la, but in the hinterlands there are not a ton of us and it is nice, especially for kids, to see that there are other jewish people out there’ ¦also, AI is considered a fairly christian show by some (there have been articles written about this’ ¦.), so it is good to publicly acknowledge that there is diversity among its contestants

Nice post mmb. Oh yes, the demographic of AI has always been considered middle American Christians. Whether it helps or hurts Adam’s career, he puts it all out there. He doesn’t feel like he needs to hide/avoid anything, even the fact that he was fat and had acne in high school. I realize Adam wants to concentrate on his music career, but by being upfront about who he is, like it or not, he really is a role model for young people. I see his message loud and clear: Be proud of who you are.

But the strength of the relationships that fans have with each other and with Adam is unique.

I think the online communities of Lambert fans were actually less strong than we have seen in previous years. For example, Taylor Hicks had stronger on-line communities than I have seen with Mr. Lambert. For example, Mr. Lambert never had anything like the Gray Charles blog. By the time Idol ended that season, on-line fan bases were actually planning weekend gatherings at places like the Flora-Bama Lounge in Gufl Shores, Alabama. I haven’t seen that level of online community and certainly not as early this year. Part of that is that American Idol, itself, is simply as relevant as it used to be. Part of it is that Mr. Lambert’s fanbase is a bit more heterogeneous, covering less squee-prone demographics.

I don’t want to sleep with Adam Lambert.

Adam’s attractiveness is interesting. When I see pics and vids of him, I almost pass out from his sexyness. But up close, its weird. He looks just as good but there is NO sexual vibe there. I think my body knows he is gay or he just does not give off those straight male pheromones. I have been close to him twice and it was the same each time. He takes your breath away but he doesn’t quite connect with you sexually. Well I am a girl and not with me anyway.

So given this ‘storm’ , Adam should easily crush Archie’s 166,000 in downloads for his first week of sales, no? It’ll be interesting because Archie got didn’t get half of this when Crush dropped.

I’d say nope. Overall sales continue to drop. So everybody’s going to sell a lot less this year than they did by reaching the same chart positions last year for the most part.

Plus, Archie had a lot of those teen fans *and* a lot of pop radio play. That drives sales much more than any pre-existing fandom, I expect. And that radio kept increasing day by day, so it drove sales more and more. With TFM, I think there may be a couple of initial splashes this week that will drive a bunch of sales (for that first week total) but after that I think it’ll be a while — i.e., until more movie stuff comes out and impinges on people’s consciousnesses, like the video teamed with MJ (good grief) — before you get the day-to-day build of the song that keeps those sales really humming …. unless they go for radio adds at pop and it takes off in the next few days, of course. Then all bets would be off, I guess!

And if you’re counting international sales … then all bets are off again, I’m thinking.

  • Tess

Q3…Legit, I am playing it for the 104th time and I really did have a good nights sleep after Adam hit 100 and I was given permission to head to bed. There is something about the song and his voice that just permeates the senses and you hear something different and unique on every go round.

  • Niall

Nice of Matt to Tweet something about Adam’s TfM being released, very cool.

The other AIers know if they don’t say something they’ll be bombarded by tweets demanding to know why they haven’t acknowledged it.

As far as predictions about Adam’s sales, the fact is he’s being rolled out in a way, with massive mainstream media interest, that is unparalleled for a former AIer. He’s already a celebrity, famous pretty much just for being famous and facinating. If he doesn’t do extremely well with his first radio single and his album, there won’t be anybody to blame but Adam as it will just prove that no matter how much money is spent, and no matter what the media says, America still decides if they want what they are being served.

I suspect he’s going to see massive sales, perhaps even surpassing Clay’s first week for his 1st cd. If he’s not, then he’s probably on the trajectory of being famous for simply being famous, ala Paris Hilton, which would suck.

  • benny

This is probably way OT (tell me MJ if it is), but I’ve been wondering if anyone else (Q3? FifthHouseSun?) is wondering whether the new social media, especially Twitter, is changing how we define / relate to celebrities. Twitter seems to be the first opportunity for celebrities to speak directly and instantly to their fans and vice versa, without the filter of PR. Is it breaking down that wall and maybe the mystery?

It seems to me (and this is the first time I’ve followed a celebrity) that Adam is on the leading edge of what could be a breakdown between “them” and “us.” The combination of AI (we feel we know him) and his candid personality makes him feel like one of “us”. Part of his appeal? It is for me.

  • halfnhalf

Honestly, it is just the quality of his vocal and the amazing vocals — because the song is just OK — but his voice is just unreal.

Now all I need is some audio wizard who can drop out everything except the vocals and the vocal backtrack for me. So I have a pure “just Adam” version.

I don’t think so. I think he’ll attract and continue to attract quite a lot of music fans, so that he’ll sell much more steadily over time than Clay though he won’t make that kind of super-crazy-splash at first (though his first splash will be good.)…..

Clay was just plain and simple not *relevant* to the music industry or to contemporary music. He’s a talented singer, and he ignited a huge squee factor with a certain large group of fans. But neither the songs he’s sung nor the way in which he’s sung them have been of a sort to attract a steady *music* fanbase or steady critical approval or radio play.

Adam will sing stuff that’s got contemporary appeal. Not to everyone, of course, but to way way more people than Clay did — for one thing, Adam is *interested* in selling commercial songs, while Clay pretty much set himself up in opposition to the directions the music industry goes.

  • AllenTX

I suspect he’s going to see massive sales, perhaps even surpassing Clay’s first week for his 1st cd.

Well, Judaism is determined by the mother. So according to Judaism, Adam is 100% Jewish, not half Jewish. By the same token, if only his dad were Jewish, he’d be considerd (by Judaism) 100% not Jewish.

And I;m guessing his dad didn’t really mind, otherwise, yeah, he wouldn’t be so quick to claim being Jewish and not “half Jewish”.

  • Q3

    On the Twitter question, JMO:

I agree that Twitter allows a new kind of immediate, partially 2-way communication between a celebrity and fans — and fan-2-fan — and fans organized communicating to the world. I don’t think that Adam is on the leading edge of the Twitter wave. But Adam uses Twitter in a very smart way — almost always with a purpose but also with his personality and quick wit.

And Twitter does have an effect — I am certain that today’s sales of TfM were in part inspired by Adam’s tweet to 211K of his “closest friends”.

  • lucy

That’s about what I would expect him to sell, actually, unless he starts getting a bunch of radio play or there’s a lot more Adam storm stuff this week than I’m expecting. His real exposure will come with the Jackson movie, though, as far as I know, and that’s not this week, right?

Not to say that I wouldn’t be thrilled if TFM sold 500,000 copies this week! (and I don’t even *like* the song — love Adam, though!)… But seems to me that one has to be realistic about the music industry. Carrie sold well, because country continues to sell pretty well, I think.

Even if Adam’s album bombed (which I don’t think will), I don’t see anyone putting him in the category as Paris Hilton. For one, Adam has massive talent. What is Paris good at? Adam has a lot of respect from the industry and media because of his talent. Does Paris? Adam is very charismatic and has a huge personality. Granted, I’ve been gone fairly often and not paying that close attention, but my reading of the enthusiasm and excitement (aka storm) is that it relates to his buzz and seemingly broad popularity in the media right now. Not really about sales expectations. But, hey, what do I know…

Personally, based on nothing, I feel he’ll sell fairly well. More importantly for me, I’m hoping he has staying power, because he has talent to spare and I want to listen to his creations over time, a long time (or however long I have lol.)

ETA: File in the fwiw category, but Carrie sings country and she’s had over four years to build up a sizable fan base, so I’m not really understanding why she’s relevant to any discussion about sales of this particular soundtrack single? Oh well, guess it goes with the territory.

Sorry, but I still don’t get the SF. :(

As far as Mansfield, I wouldn’t call him a hater, by any means, but I would say that he far prefers Kris and Allison to Adam. Not that it matters in any way, but I am surprised he hasn’t weighed in, which is more of my point. His blog posters, OTOH, have been vehemently anti-Adam for the most part (OTT, flamboyant, wailer, etc, etc.,) so I stopped posting there and told Brian why (b/c we have tweeted and DMed a number of times).

Yes, if you’re Jewish, it’s through your mother. While Adam has been candid that he doesn’t practice, he has always been open and honest about *being* Jewish. So when a poster on here insinuated that Adam would do well in the entertainment industry b/c, er, um, you know, I got defensive. In fact, in Idoldom, you are brave to be someone who is both gay AND Jewish.

I’m laughing so hard right now. Never change, Adam. :D \

SO AWESOME. How CUTE is this? I mean, he just looked like a little kid who was still playing dress up. WHICH IS WHAT HE HAS ALWAYS DONE, and I don’t mean this in in a condescending way. Remember what he and his parents said on Idol? He was the little kid who put on adult clothes and drew a mustache and pretended to be a grown up. Whose mom kept the Halloween costumes in a box so he could play dress up ALL YEAR LONG.

And this has changed because he is now a well-known, enormously talented singer/performer. Otherwise? Nope. Aside from being more secure about who he is (and I am sure he has moments of self-doubt; he mentioned the identity crisis right after the Tour, after playing the same character every night, I would say), he is the same kid, playing Rock Star and having fun, being provocative, and living life.

Laura Saltman is the coolest fantard EVER.

And if Adam doesn’t sell a million copies of TFM, and he won’t (probably,) who cares? He got his music out, he had much more music to release, and he gets to live his dream. I wish we all got to.

suebrody: Yes, if you’re Jewish, it’s through your mother.

IMO Adam has been more open about his Jewish background than Elliott was during his time on Idol.

Your comment reminded me of an odd coincidence — Adam’s mother is Jewish — so was David Bowie’s. Of course, Gene Simmons is also Jewish, so it may not mean much!

OT but a clarification about your comment – There is no central Jewish authority like exists in many Christian and Islamic demonimations. But almost all American Reformed Jewish congregations are committed to equality and believe that you are Jewish is either your Mother or Father is Jewish.

The majority of American Jews are not active members of a congregation — often referred to as cultural Jews. I would put Adam in this category.

My family raised my sisters and me in a Reformed household, which is less…stringent?…than the Conservative and of course Orthodox sects (is sects correct?). What I like about Adam is that he is candid about this, as he is about his sexual preference. No secrets with Adam (at least not the ones he feels are applicable for the public to know; what he shares with his family and friends are not our business).

IMO Adam has been more open about his Jewish background than Elliott was during his time on Idol.

That’s because there was never any doubt in anybody’s mind that Elliott was Jewish, whereas with Adam it’s not so clear — Adam’s *entire* family is *not* Jewish, he doesn’t inherit a Jewish name from his father, and he doesn’t necessarily “look” Jewish, unlike the completely utterly Jewish Elliott, so Adam kind of ended up having to *inform* people of the fact. With his name, his Israeli relatives, his father’s name posted on the tv screen when he was in the audience, etc. I’m pretty sure Elliott absolutely assumed that everybody would just *know* that he was Jewish (even though some people may *not* have known — although I would think you’d have to be living under a rock to miss it, but still.)

If you’re trying to say that Elliott’s ever made any effort to hide the fact, when you say he “wasn’t as *open*” about it, you’re way off base. He wears SuperJew teeshirts and the like and talks about his Israeli family and his Jewish heritage on a regular basis and always has.

So given this ‘storm’ , Adam should easily crush Archie’s 166,000 in downloads for his first week of sales, no? It’ll be interesting because Archie got didn’t get half of this when Crush dropped.

I never can tell what chart positions equate to numbers wise – and it seems to differ from week to week anyway. Crush was a really catchy pop tune that people really seemed to like from the get go. I wouldn’t be so certain that this movie song can achieve the same thing.

The other AIers know if they don’t say something they’ll be bombarded by tweets demanding to know why they haven’t acknowledged it.

halfnhalf: Since several posters had responded to my Adam-half-Jewish thing, how can ethnicity be passed on only thru the mother, if so, our President Obama would be 100% white and 0% black.

Judism is a religion not an ethnicity. In Jewish tradition you can be born a Jew if your mother is Jewish or convert to Judism. Because paternaty could not be certain, the requirement was based on the mother who could be identified with certainty. There is no “baptism” in Judism — if your mother (or Reformed Judism a parent) is Jewish you are Jewish if you want to be.

Elvis Presley was Jewish through maternal descent – but raised as First Assembly of God Church/Pentecostal. As an adult, Elvis did not believe the Bible in any traditional sense… Elvis constructed “a personalised religion out of what he’d read of Hinduism, Judaism, numerology, theosophy, mind control, positive thinking and Christianity. There are several great books about Elvis and his spirituality.

Famous Jewish converts include Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Sammy Davis.

A lot has been written about “half-Jews” (I happen to be one myself), some of whom identify as “entirely Jewish” and some who don’t, but one thing I’ve always noticed is that the secular Jewish community, at least in the U.S., is quick to embrace anybody famous or successful if they have even a quarter of Jewish blood in them (regardless of which side of the family it came from). There was even a book out many years ago about “reclaiming Jesus,” LOL.

    Meet the Half-Jews

I do think it’s fantastic that Adam is up-front about self-identifying as Jewish, but he hardly needs to be the spokesperson for gay Jews. There are lots of out and proud Jewish people in all walks of life.

Re Brian Mansfield, I totally empathize. He should be free to say he hates “Time For Miracles” if he does, and he really should be honest about how he feels, but if he doesn’t give the song a glowing review, he will be attacked by the more zealous Adam fans. Count on it.

All this publicity isn’t being orchestrated for average sales. His reps, and eventually RCA are spending big bucks for a big return. So yes, anything less than massive sales by todays standards will be considered unsuccessful. He’s already being treated as a star by the media and has gotten free publicity all over the place (Perez Hilton, etc) to go with the publicity “storm” (premiering his video at the Michael Jackson movie, the hubbub over Details magazine). In exchange for the benefits he and the fans have to accept the cost of increased expectations by the media and Adam’s own label and people.

MTV News Sep 29 2009 9:09 AM EDT
‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’ Ticket Sales Break International Records
Documentary has sold out hundreds of screenings across U.S. a month before its release.

    Variety Sep 28 2009
The Michael Jackson concert documentary ‘This Is It’ doesn’t hit theaters until Oct. 27, but it is already racking up record-breaking presales across the globe for its limited two-week theatrical engagement. The film, which documents MJ’s rehearsals for the ‘This Is It’ concert series, accounted for 80% of all online ticket sales in its first 24 hours of sales, sold out opening-day Los Angeles screenings within two hours, sold 30,000 tickets in London within 24 hours, earned more than $1 million in ticket sales in Japan in its first 24 hours, and also sold out opening-day screenings in France, Australia, Germany and New Zealand.

I think the difference here is that Adam has used his Twitter account to help promote his friends. He wasn’t just congratulating them. He has mentioned both Kris and Allie’s singles twice, encouraging his fans to buy. I would hope both K & A at least sent Adam a nice text thanking him. At the same time, it would be a nice gesture and good PR for them if they returned the favor. Obviously, they don’t have to. But, it would be the smart thing to do. • Truthiness

Judism is a religion not an ethnicity.

It’s both. I mean if being born to a Jewish mother was enough to get you killed for it for hundreds of years, yeah, it’s enough to be considered Jewish in my book, YMMV of course. Plus Adam actually did go to Hebrew school and seemingly, went to Temple for a few years. Currently he’s not Jewish as a religion, but he still identies with it, which is his choice and I think is valid. I’m not going to say he can’t call himself Jewish just because he’s not practicing, and may be more of a diet Jew now.

Anyhew, well pffft. Stalled at 11. Way to harsh my mellow iTunes and buying public. And I’m not even done with work so I don’t even have that to mitigate my non-mellowtude.

Well, if he’d been a crypto-Jew, that might have been worthy of discussion, but since he already outed himself… not so much.

  • BootStar

Hey, suebrody, I like Mayer too (although it’s apparently very un-cool to admit to it!), so good on you!

Mansfield really should have the intestinal fortitude to be honest about how he feels about “Time For Miracles,” but I can understand his fear of backlash. The guy’s only human afterall!

And I never meant to imply that Adam thought he was the spokesperson for all Jews any more than he’s the spokeperson for all gays.

  • suebrody

We all lost in hwc’s poll. Adam didn’t break Top 10 yet. OTOH, ET and Access Hollywood haven’t aired yet, so there is still time. ;) I really want to see the video: Emo!Adam. :)

  • suebrody

Thanks, bootstar. I like Gavin DeGraw and Jason Mraz, too, so I think I have lost even more cool points today. ;)

I love Adam b/c he’s Adam. He’s an amazing vocalist, so the rest is just gravy. But delicious gravy! :)

  • anthrogeek

I really want to see the video: Emo!Adam.

We just caught the quick glimpse, but it didn’t look like Emo Adam to me, it looked like a new incarnation more akin to a bedraggled Adam (as opposed to bedazzled), befitting the flight from disaster theme.

undercooked: And don’t forget the most important reference material, Adam Sandler’s Hanukkah Song.

Paul Newmans half Jewish; Goldie Hawns half too,
Put them together’“what a fine lookin Jew!

Yay! Adam Sandler now has more material for another version!!! The last few have been played out, though nothing beats this from Version #2:

    Lenny Kravitz is half Jewish
    Cortney Love is too
Put them together – what a funky bad-ass Jew!!

Can’t wait to see what he’ll come up with for “our” Adam!

If there are Owl City fans on this blog — sorry to offend but really it is so lame!

I now sort of like “Party in the USA” since my mind is destroyed.

And I really want Adam to know them out of the #1 slot! I know it is just a dream but I think it is Time for a Miracle.

Huh? Adam didn’t even win the show.

Some of Adam’s fans are kidding themselves if they think the expectation level for him is lower than “the kid who won”. Adam is the one who is expected to become a huge international superstar and have the sales to match. If Adam fails to live up to the hype, he’s going to hear about it. He’s not going to get a pass because he’s the runner up.

  • Truthiness

My sister (who, admittedly, wasn’t all that familiar with him) thought Adam was of Asian descent, lol.

Another clue to the rumored cover song! ‘Secret Asian Man’ !

Reminded me of the Skankin’ Pickle song “Asian Man,” probably just me.

Anyhew, I thought the Details interview was cute. I love how unabashedly dorky Adam can be sometimes. The weird faces he makes, that he likes playing Rock Star and sharing his frustrations with it, and I like how enthusiastic he gets about things where he sounds just like a big kid, or playing around with the hair dryer. I want to squish him muchly in the Details interviews.

They must be the same fans who hounded Adam non-stop until he acknowledged Kris’ single.

People are so strange. That’s the very definition right there of over-invested.

I too thought of Adam Sandler’s song about who is and who is not Jewish while reading these posts.

I do not however have a sister, so she has no opinion on Adam.

Having lived during the 80′s, I actually remember a time when Boy George was not a punchline. He may be a freak, but he did at one time have a really fabulous voice and some awesomly delicious pop tunes.

Adam said he was raised as a Jew. They celebrated Chanukah, and he went to Hebrew School till he was 11, I believe…anyway…the fact that has a Christian boyfriend is…just…that Drake is Christian. If they have kids, it gets more complicated.

Some of Adam’s fans are kidding themselves if they think the expectation level for him is lower than ‘the kid who won’ . Adam is the one who is expected to become a huge international superstar and have the sales to match. If Adam fails to live up to the hype, he’s going to hear about it. [snerk] My last comment on Adam Jewishness -

Well Boy George was on the A-Team once, and Adam begins with an “A.” Ya know they’re making a movie about the A-Team, somehow I don’t think Adam will be in it, which is a shame. But he has said he would like to do acting in the future. That will be cool.

see the sf=72012371 change that number to 72012372….that updated it for me

I still don’t know what the difference is between the pop and iTunes charts, and you would think I would by now…can someone explain?

I was confusing Boy George with George Michael, but both were pretty damn popular in the 80s (I loved Wham!). Wasn’t George Michael on the finale of S7 Idol and he was pretty boring?

  • CSFan

What fans? When did he or anyone else say he wanted a pass?! Who said the expectation for him was lower? Who said this was now a competition? I do not understand any of this

It’s not a competition between Adam and anybody else from AI. His publicity machine and buzz have put him in a category by himself. He’s a bonafide celebrity with a publicity blitz that is being executed for the purpose of launching an international superstar, not a first time artist who just does “ok.” “Ok” isn’t what RCA, his producers, his management, and PR team want for their heavy investment.

Yes recently Adam was asked if his father was Jewish and he said no he was a Christian but the family did not celebrate Christmas and celebrated Hanukkah instead. So that is another reason why he identifies as Jewish and not half and half.

Suebrody- they just categorize all songs on Itunes by genre. There are more songs on the pop chart then any of the other sub genres, so it’s alot harder to place high on the pop chart than it is for say, rock. If you go to itunes, there is a drop down menu where you can see the different genres and get a better idea how it works.

8 of the songs on the top 10 overall chart are pop songs
1 of the songs on the top 10 overall chart are rock songs ( John Mayer)
1 of the songs on the top 10 overall chart are electronic songs( Owl City)

I absolutely agree. I think it is an important part of who Adam is culturally, how he relates to people and his value system.

I also believe that being Jewish is also is important to who Adam is as a musician — and vocalists are musicians. Just like growing up exposed to Gospel music had a dramatic effect on singers from Aretha Franklin to Danny Gokey — growing up in the Jewish faith exposes people to a vast diverse array of music that is the result of the Jewish diaspora, and give children an appreciation of the value of vocal performance.

I think Adam becoming an adult in LA has more effect on his music than his Jewish heritage. Having found a welcoming atmosphere in the underground club scene in LA ,his daring ways of interpreting songs were buoyed up.

Even those raised in a close fanatic environment where ethnic creed and religious background would have a strong influence – a person can still be either for the heritage or very much against it. How a person turns out is not always a given.

He had tremendous hype when he was on the show and that didn’t result in votes. Why would it result in sales? He already didn’t live up to the hype when he didn’t win so why would it be any different when it comes to sales?

Numbers don’t lie. Kris got more votes by a huge margin. That’s reality and that’s what I look at when I set my expectations.

I don’t think this is unreasonable at all and agree with it. Adam was one of the front runners, he did go the finals, but despite all the odds in his favour and seemingly the favour of the judges, he lost the contest. No one knows for sure, but let’s say he lost by a huge margin in the voting as has been reported by the only numbers we have. Okay, than Adam shouldn’t be expected to do beyond the numbers of a number two, who lost by a landslide.

This isn’t some sort of anti-Adam argument, this is a setting realistic expectations and how Adam might need more of a publicity boost as the non-winner. Especially one who lost by a lot.

And yeah, Adam did lose, he was one of the front-runners and still did. Now I also think that Adam has a lot of strikes against him as well that should be taken into account, but that’s the old story and not relevant.

The only way it’s relevant is setting expectations. I don’t expect Adam to have to have SO many more sales than Kris did, considering that Kris won. And no, not even with more publicity. And no, I don’t think that Adam has had MORE PUBLICITY THAN ANYONE EVER!!1! so he should be expected to outdo both David Cook or David A. from last year, and heck, all other AI people ever before him.

I know people like to talk about Adam Storm here, and there is a fair amount of publicity outside the bubble, but not huge amounts right now. Outside the bubble it’s still in it’s nascent stages. I just went to that soap board to check in with one of my AI peeps and the General Hospital thing happened and yeah, a fair amount of people there had never heard of Adam, and a fair amount remembered not liking him. So that is where my expectations are at right now.

If others want to say that Adam has some high Q rating or whatever, so is expected to slam dunk in sales? Okay, I disagree with them.

Numbers don’t lie. Kris got more votes by a huge margin. That’s reality and that’s what I look at when I set my expectations.

    ROFL at this comment!!

Kris won the text messaging and phone redial contest. Phones and redialing software don’t buy albums though. So that’s how I set my expectations and Kris is doing about as well as I expected.

Regarding half-Jew or whatever that was discussed earlier. Well, Adam is a Jew, cuz of his mother. That’s just a fact, it is his religion, that’s all. He wasn’t much of a “Jew” (according to his statements), he “exercised” a necessary minimum. Actually, he is not different from any other “assimilated” Jeish people especially in Urban area. He most certainly wasn’t raised as a Christian (again’ his link to any religion is weak – according to him). So in that sense ‘“ there’s no father heritage to talk about, in any case the religion obviously wasn’t an issue in Lambert’s house. He did talk about his father music heritage etc, which is probably much more important for him. This theological dispute, at least in regards to Adam, seems to be pointless, as he definitely doesn’t care or relay to people on that basis. It is just a fact’ ¦ Like being a blond or a brunette. If I’m a blond after my mother, should my brunette father be mentioned every time I talk about my looks? One more reason to like him ‘“ being a “Jew” myself it plays no role at all for relaying and connecting to people. As it should be, and I hope some day would. Hope it’ll be a Time for Miracles’ ¦
And if I’m on that issue, he looks smoking on that video from ET.

lol I’m with you there. I’m just happy we’ve started getting some Adam and Allison kibble too.

Love Adam’s look and attitude in the video (I much prefer angry Adam to soul tortured Adam a la those excruciating facial expression in “If I Can’t Have You”). But cgi effects behind him look pretty lame. I’ll hold off judgment until I can see it in full. If he reprises those awful facial expressions it’ll be an automatic fail for me.

  • Truthiness

Kris won the text messaging and phone redial contest. Phones and redialing software don’t buy albums though. So that’s how I set my expectations and Kris is doing about as well as I expected

Here’s my thought, for what it’s worth. Super high expectations of Adam means that if he doesn’t deliver anything other than a HUGE slam dunk, he will be seen to be a failure. So that is what the second poster is talking about, rightly I would say, in getting some perspective about Adam…for his own good. Not to say he lost nyah nyah nyah, but that the kinds of expectations his in the bubble fans have are a.) not based on facts of how Adam lost the show b.) do him no favours.

Not to mention that rehashing season and yadda yadda types of voting whatever is ancient history and not relevant to the current discussion, except as this poster did, in setting realistic expectations.

And yeah, I agree, Adam lost the show even after being a front runner. He lost presumably by a large margin. He has a lot of ground to make up for it. And that is where I put his sales expectations.

    YMMV, of course.

  • Q3

I love the dirty Adam! The MV looks great and the clips of him singing the song make the song even better. Bet we see this video on MTV/VH1.

Does anyone know why/how Adam ended up as VH1′s top artist?

    VH1 Chart – Top Artist
    1 Adam Lambert
    2 Beyonc
    3 Lady Gaga
    4 Lil Wayne
    5 Michael Jackson

    Regarding winning Idol:

The vote was part of a reality show — and it is over — Kris won.

Kris and Adam are both now new recording artist trying to make it in the real world — they can both be successful but it is a really tough business — tougher now than ever. The iTunes sales are reality. The Amazon sales are reality.

I can’t wait for the vid. The teaser just wasn’t enough, but watching on my little pc screen may not cut it either. Have to figure out how to put in on a dvd to play on the tv. Do you think the vid will be included in the dvd of the movie? If so I may have to actually get the movie dvd.

  • mickeybordentwo

The great unanswerable question for me is if Adam had won, would he still be getting the publicity/jobs/buzz that he’s getting now? Or would it be at the level that Kris is getting as winner.

If Kris had come in second, would he be getting the publicity/jobs/buzz that Adam is getting now?

Interesting debate about religion? It doesn’t seem like an important factor to me. Everyone has their own beliefs whether we share the same ones or not.

My sister and brother in-law have different religions but they really have made it work. It doesn’t have to be a big problem. They’ve been married for 8 years.

However, if your boyfriend/girlfriend is Jewish and you want to marry that person, you have to convert.

I think it’s interesting how there isnt even a 30 second teaser for the music video. They are just going to premiere it. (not complaining =) )

I’m not sure I understand all this discussion about how Jewish Adam is. It sounds like he isn’t practicing. From the little bit I have heard him say about his philosophical views it may be more the mystical aspects like Kabbalah (the new age version). Anyhew don’t know for sure.

But he sure looks very intense, masculine, and dirty in the
    mv snippet.

  • Natasha

This isn’t some sort of anti-Adam argument, this is a setting realistic expectations and how Adam might need more of a publicity boost as the non-winner. Especially one who lost by a lot.

Thanks, because believe it or not I’m not trying to make an anti-Adam argument. But the fact is that he lost by a significant margin to Kris Allen whose single currently needs CPR and isn’t even in the itunes top 100 the last time I checked. And I don’t buy any of the excuses being made for why it’s doing poorly. When I look at that situation I can’t realistically say that Adam is going to burn up the charts no matter how much hype is involved.

Yes, both the 3 core MTV’s and 2 core VH1′s play music videos. MTV will be doing more than one show on 2012 as part of there movie coverage.

But I guess it depends which stations you get. I get 11 of the 12 US MTV music channels plus LOGO (also MTV but not much music). I expect to see this video on at least 4 of the channels plus LOGO. I also think we will see Adam on Comedy Central which is also MTV-owned.

Let’s not re-hash the Idol season. This is about Adam doing what we know he can because he is a once in a generation performer and talent. Hubby is amused and teenage sons not so much. Never paid this much attention to an entertainer before!!!

  • gangreen29

So I just read the details interview, am I the only one who thought Adam came across really bad? This quote “And I got to do a lot of shopping. It affects your perspective like crazy. Somewhere in the South Pacific I saw a really poor Third World island and I was like, ohhhh. I had never seen that. I was kind of, like, upper’“middle’“class and white’“bread” makes him seem really flippant to me. So what, he was shopping in some country was faced with the reality of poverty and just thought,”wow I’ve never seen something like that”. If Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears said something like that they would be ripped apart for being insensitive or an airhead.

  • Truthiness

When I look at that situation I can’t realistically say that Adam is going to burn up the charts no matter how much hype is involved.

Plus the economy sucks more than it did last year, and the music industry even more than that, so yeah, making realistic adjustments for what is considered selling well in total units, is also realistic. I mean look at the days when being a number one best seller meant sellling say a million copies of something, versus where you can get to number one by selling like 150,000. They’re both number one hits from their respective times, but times change, so the bottomline numbers necessarily change.

So what Adam might be expected to do with his single in terms of sheer numbers, shouldn’t be compared to previous years winners/runners-up. Oh and Carrie Underwood’s singles? The singles of an established multi-platinum, multi-record artist vs. a new artist who didn’t even win in his season? Yeah, not seeing that comparison as being apples to apples.

He was saying how it changed him and that he said as someone growing up fairly affluent in an affluent country, no, he hadn’t seen real poverty they way he was when confronted with it in another country. Now could he have in the US? unfortunately ,yes. but his pretty sheltered life didn’t include that until he went overseas.

I didn’t see it as flippant, as much as acknowleding how lucky he was as an upper-middle class American and how seeing how too much of the world lives, is a life changer. Which is what he said, that it changes you.

Didn’t see it as airhead or flippant. And he’s talked before about how much he grew from dealing with other people and their cultures and that if given the chance, everyone should because it is so important. Doesn’t sound flip or airheaded to me.

All that was in the article about it I quoted, so all he talked about was seeing poverty, and it surprising him because he came from a privileged background. I don’t quite understand why people are still rehashing what happened on American Idol. It’s over and people outside of American Idol either don’t know who won or really don’t care who won. It doesn’t make a bit of difference to non-idol fans who won or who came in second. All these people care about is whether the music is good. So far for Adam, it’s looking pretty good. It’s going to be interesting to see the amount of international downloads. As for what’s going on with Kris, Allison or Danny, don’t know and really don’t care. Adam is the one who captured my interest and I like his style. I am not expecting Adam to be come some kind of superstar over night. I simply want him to do what he always did, which is to do the best that he can. I remember Adam saying, he wanted to build a career so he can buy a house and take care of his family. That’s what any of us would want and I think he can achieve that by simply being himself. I am happy for him, because his dreams are coming true.

Just because we are barred from discussing how Adam lost the show here at MJs, do not assume that Adam fans are not aware of how he lost.

I, for example, too those reasons into account when I predicted US sales of 200,000 copies for his album — a number that I probably willl need to revise upwards to perhaps 350,000.

Yeah I was enjoying Adam’s song today and the video coming out to see tonight and now I have to read about votes and if Kris won by people cheating for him. My lord, that was in May were now in October and this is going on again. I voted for Kris but I would have been just as happy if Adam would have won. Am enjoying today so much and now this starts again.

  • adamaloha

It IS flippant because he is just acknowledging the poverty and how lucky he is that he isn’t poor, but he doesn’t say anything about wanting to change it.

The words are there.. in black and white. They were said. That is fact.

Your interpretation of them being “flippant’ on the other hand, is simply that. Your projection on someone else’s words.
We all do it. Doesn’t make it true or factual.

  • gangreen29

And Adam has certainly tried to do charity work, so not like he doesn’t get it.

    So yeah, whatever.

Like what? I’m serious because I haven’t seen any kind of charity work on Adam’s part, but if you know of something it would make me feel better about his ditsy quote.

  • jms

He was saying how it changed him and that he said as someone growing up fairly affluent in an affluent country, no, he hadn’t seen real poverty they way he was when confronted with it in another country.

This. Although, poverty looks very different in third world countries than in the U.S. We don’t don’t have shanty towns for miles on end, or three year old children chasing after tourists on city streets asking for money only to be chased away by the militia. I’ve never felt luckier than the first time I traveled and saw the level of poverty.

It IS flippant because he is just acknowledging the poverty and how lucky he is that he isn’t poor, but he doesn’t say anything about wanting to change it.

Whoa. This is where we’ll have to agree to disagree. Just because someone doesn’t decide to make solving poverty their mission in life does not mean they are flippant. That’s way too big of a logic leap for such a short interview piece.

  • Q3

In the TfM Music Video — is Adam wearing the same scarf that he has on in the Cavallo studio photos on EW.com?

If so, I guess he got to keep his wardrobe!

  • suebrody

The mysterious guy on #ff is so not 5’8″. It’s Adam. :)

BTW, I saw nothing flippant whatsoever in the interview. And he has said that when he performed on the cruise ship when he was 19, which he noted was horrible, and then as part of the tour of Hair, it also helped him to understand what the rest of the world was like, as he had been sheltered as an upper class, white kid in an affluent neighborhood.

Someone who supported teachers and students with DonorsChoice is extremely generous and this is just the beginning. He will not horde his earnings. He will help those who are less fortunate. And he is going to be very successful. I sincerely believe this.

ETA: WTF do we have to do to get Adam to #1 on iTunes in the US? Or at least #10? B/c I will do it.

  • Cate

Numbers don’t lie. Kris got more votes by a huge margin. That’s reality and that’s what I look at when I set my expectations.

PUH-LEEEEEZE! Alternate universe reality? When AI states this as a reality, I MIGHT believe it.

  • Truthiness

Truthiness, no where in the article does it say how it changed him

He said, ” It affects your perspective like crazy,” so yes, it affected, i.e. changed, his perspective about things…as he puts in context, from being from a life of relative privilege to dealing firsthand with those that are really very poor. So yes, I saw even in that article that he was referring to how it changed (affected his perspective) by his experience.

I wasn’t aware he had to then make a plea for the World Bank to make more microfinanced loans.

  • gangreen29

Your interpretation of them being ‘flippant’ on the other hand, is simply that. Your projection on someone else’s words.

Flippant: lacking proper respect or seriousness

Adam Lambert:”And I got to do a lot of shopping. It affects your perspective like crazy. Somewhere in the South Pacific I saw a really poor Third World island and I was like, ohhhh. I had never seen that. I was kind of, like, upper’“middle’“class and white’“bread’ Do you really think that what he is saying is not flippant? First of all he can’t even NAME the country, it is just some “third world island”. Second, he learned this from shopping? I’m sorry but you may not think it is flippant but I sure as hell do.

  • ilovekrisallen39

I love coming here and reading all of your comments and this is one time I hope MJ comes thru and deletes all of the fanwaring ‘“ it is so NOT FUN to read

Unless she’s already come through and done a sweep there doesn’t seem to be anything really heinous going on today.

It IS flippant because he is just acknowledging the poverty and how lucky he is that he isn’t poor, but he doesn’t say anything about wanting to change it.

I guess maybe that is why his charity of choice is one that aids students in less that middle class settings. Maybe instead of talking the talk, he’s walking the walk.

I don’t know General Hospital ‘” can someone tell me if Dante Falconeri usually dresses like that.

Yes, Dante usually dresses like that. He’s an undercover cop from NYC, who has infiltrated the Port Charles mob. Unbeknownst to him, his father, who he has never known is the top godfather. This also seems to be the foreshadowing of a new storyline as we all know he can’t bring down Sonny Corinthos, and some of the imagery alludes to something new being revealed about Dante.

I do understand how you can feel knollish …..I know if you figure out the linkage you will fill us in. I think people are yanking our chains. I really do.

Adam’s banner is now at the top of the iTunes chart permanently, it seems. AND YET HE CANNOT GET TO #10. Who is stopping this? Bitter.

Back in the old days, iTunes used to use bars to represent sales. You could see that the bottom 90 slots in the top 100 were closely bunched. Sell 10,000 copies in day, and you could pass dozens and dozenes of songs. The top ten is much more stretched out. It might take 10,000 more sales just to catch the next song up the ladder.

It’s like a car race when a fast car gets sent to the back of the pack. It can pass the first 30 cars like greased lightening, then it gets to the front of the pack and it might be half a lap behind the next car. It takes time, even if its the fastest car on the track (and we don’t know if Lambert is gaining at this point, although we can logically assume he probably is).

Kris won, that’s reality. And again, this isn’t anti-Adam, this is realistic expectations are good for Adam and having things otherwise, sets Adam up for failure.

We have absolutely no way of knowing what was said to the reporter and not included in the article, as is typical of any interview every written in more than a transcripted Q&A format. Period.

Exactly, anthro!! And even in a transcripted Q & A format, it is still edited. Usually way more questions are asked then are ever published and only a portion of the response is given in order the keep the interview moving, cut out rambling and stay on point.

The writers and whatever publishing company or studio or whomever hold the rights. But not the singer in this case.

I just saw the Acces Hollywood interview and it was really funny, Adam is such a troublemaker lol ohh and loooved dirty Adam in the mv, can ´t wait to see the whole thing!

  • Q3

    From Details Magazine

At 19, he worked as a singer in a musical revue on a cruise ship for a year. ‘That showed me the world,’ he says. ‘And I got to do a lot of shopping. It affects your perpective like crazy. Somewhere in the South Pacific I saw a really poor Third World island and I was like, ohhhh. I had never senn that. I was kind of like, upper-middle-class and white-bread.’

Sorry, this doesn’t sound “flippant” to me. He was 19 years old. Traveling around the world for the first time. I imaging that growing up in San Diego, Adam had some exposure to poverty — but that would not prepare anyone for the poverty that exists in some parts of the South Pacific. If he said, I saw a lot of poor people and went “ooooh” and then decided to go shopping to forget them, then I would agree with your point. But that isn’t what he said.

I grew up in middle class suburbs but spent a lot of time in the 1960′s in the Appalachian south so I had exposure to poverty when I was young. But nothing prepared me for the poverty I saw when I first traveled to the Carribean and Latin America.

“I would say that an Idol winner should be expected to sell a minumum 750,000 to 1,000,000.”

I agree. Although with the amount of publicity Adam is getting he should do better than that. Oh wait, I guess you were talking about some guy called Chris. Last I saw him, 19 was getting him gigs at parking garages.

And if we’re comparing runners up. Adam should be doing as well as ARchie did last year. So far, he’s falling behind on downloads although he could catch up as the week progresses. Archie moved 700K albums last year so I’m not sure why Adam would be expected to sell fewer albums.

Apparently missed the sarcasm and snark! LOL I was referring to the 2 or 3 days worth of twitter and blog sites that dedicated themselves to debating whether Adam was Subject Zero. We were bored, ok?

  • Cate

So I just read the details interview, am I the only one who thought Adam came across really bad?

Probably. I find most Kris fans to be cordial and non-judgmental with regard to his best buddy during the season and on tour. Love Kris, too, so would not spend my time posting comments just to find fault.

I expect Adam and Kris to both be successful, and, hopefully, others in the Top 10. But you are entitled to your opinion, of course, whether anyone agrees with it or not. And I do not.

  • hwc

    Adam said, “ohhhh,” not “wheeeee!”

And he said it changed his perspective. He said he had lived an upper middle class, white bread life, which means he has the self awareness to know how narrow his upbringing had been.

He believes in helping others. He has raised tens of thousands for schoolkids, many of whom live in poverty areas.
Really, he is a remarkable and sensitive young man.

  • abbysee

The guy in the beginning isn’t Dante, it’s the new character played by James Franco. Or so I gather.

The video I watched there is only one actor in it, and that guy is Dante Falconeri aka Dominick Perelli. The undercover cop. The grafitti he is looking at probably alludes to the new character that is joining GH that people are talking about. The James Franco guy. Unless there is another clip that I am missing.

As for the ‘flippant’ conversation. I didn’t see that at all. I just saw that experience as opening his eyes about something he hadn’t been exposed to being from an upper middle class, white-bread upbringing. Everything that I have seen about Adam show him to be caring about people other than himself, so a couple of lines in Details doesn’t turn him into Marie Antoinette.

You know, I am all for lowing expectations because if Adam fails it will be hard to digest, personally. On the other hand to lower then so low as if any meager acheivement will be seen as success so of negates everything that has happened since he came in second. The idea how he placed on the show should somehow signal what he sales are going to be is passe as nothing that has happened since season 2 has really indicated any kind of pattern.

On the other hand the person who said he expects Adam to outsell Clay would have to be disengenuous because not only has the musical landscape changed since then, the very outcome of season 2 was really nothing like the outcome of season 8 except that some expect the guy who came in second to best the guy who won in sales. The reasons for such thinking are very, very different.

  • Dallas

    Love dirty Adam!!! woohoo!

    Prediction (again):
