Adam Lambert talks about his American Music Award performance and the subsequent decision by ABC to cancel his Good Morning America performance originally scheduled for Wednesday.

He says there isn’t a “damn thing” He would have changed about the AMA performance.

He says there isn’t a ‘damn thing’ He would have changed about the GMA performance

MJ: I think he said he wouldn’t change anything about the AMA performance.

  • iluvai

I love Adam mixing his trademark plaid with those crazy awesome boots.

  • Squirrely

Adam is on yahoo home page and they are using a gorgeous picture of him from the AMAs

  • Squirrely

This was a fun interview and seems very relaxed.

  • Studio57

The kids loved him! I thought that was pretty cool how he explained it to them.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

Judging from the preview, Adam’s music video is totally crazy. I can’t believe this guy was on American Idol. :D

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

I think he should have done the choreography from the FYE MV for the AMA’s and he should have ditched the stairs. I think the dance moves looked pretty good in the video.

  • bridgeymah

The wouldn’t change anything comment is so obviously framed around the prior piece of their talk about the more risk parts of his performance.

Can’t wait to see everyone jump all over it complaining because he didn’t eat humble pie, or say something about the vocal, or or or…

Be back with popcorn in a minute.

(oh and I might have to buy my first video of iTunes ever… looks pretty hot)

  • k0ka

Lambert is funny. Nobody wants to talk about that “performance”.

  • AnninSD

The Yahoo home page link (Squirrely mentioned above) is to a great updated article
    http://tv.yahoo.com/news/article/tv.accesshollywood.com/tv.accesshollywood.com-updated-abcs-good-morning-america-cancels-adam-lamberts-performance

“CBS says he will also, “discuss his recent controversial ‘American Music Awards’ performance.” Adam will perform two songs on “The Early Show,” but will not perform “For Your Entertainment,” his song from the AMAs.”

    so 2 songs – WWFM and ??? I hope its a ballad! Oh who am I kidding I don’t care which 2 – wow!

  • soccerboi

Well since Adam seems to be unaffected by all the controversy I guess I should be too. I have really been worried that this would harm his career but maybe not…who knows.

  • ettacandy

Good Lord. His management couldn’t have purchased more intense publicity. Adam’s going to be just fine.

  • Truthiness

Well the changing a thing was regarding the naughty bits, but he should have put in that he would have changed his VOCAL performance, because it wasn’t as strong as it should be.

    Totally missed oppotunity for that.

Plus I think he should get that some people had a right to not comfortable with his performance and that’s okay for them to feel that way.

  • adamisthemanfan

It was a fun interview and look he hasnt said the words “Im sorry I fucked up” because he knows this would garner even more backlash and more controversy…and I think he just wants to move on…
but he did admit the performance was pitchy, that he got carried away (his exact words), that he was sort of taken aback by the fall and that he didnt mean to upset anyone (in the radio interview with elvis duran)…that is enough for me and so is the music.
I still didnt think it was his best performance but there will be many others that will focus more on the music and his singing abilities.
I mean hes between a rock and a hard place on this one because he does or did have more conservative straight fans, but he also has gay fans that applauded what he did and he cant please everyone all the time and whats done is done…even if he wanted to change it he cant.

  • adamisthemanfan

Yes on a more positive note the MV looks really cool.

  • KrazeeK120

All “scandal” aside, does he really think that his performance was so good that he wouldn’t change anything about it? I feel like he sacrificed performance quality for “shock value.” That’s not the decision I probably would have made as a brand-new artist, but I guess if that’s what works for him, then…ok.

Also…I’m sick of the Britney/Madonna/GaGa references. First of all, the Britney/Madonna thing was on the MTV VMA’s. I have never seen MTV advertise anything they show as “family friendly.” Secondly, I’ve never seen any of these people simulate what he was simulating at 9:55 PM on an ABC broadcast of an awards show. Actually, I’ve never seen them simulate anything close to what he was doing on anything televised. I haven’t ever been to their concerts, so I’m not sure what goes on there.

I don’t have kids, but if I were watching that with, say, an 11 year old, I’d probably be REALLY uncomfortable.

All just my opinion, of course.

  • JoCeeisme

He said he wouldn’t change a thing, how about the vocals, yes we should jump all over this cause this is what he is known for, his voice. I don’t know why the kiss is always mentioned too, dont think anyone cared about that it was the other things, anyhow, he loves the limelight and the attention, so I guess he is really happy now.

  • karenw

    I love his boots.

The FYE video also looks like it will be really good.

  • LeHommeAdam

“Good Lord. His management couldn’t have purchased more intense publicity. Adam’s going to be just fine”

    YEP ETTACANDY

Everybody and their mother and sister and uncle was talking about Adam today. You’re right.

    I LOVE HIS FYE VIDEO!!!

  • DLee

Well the changing a thing was regarding the naughty bits, but he should have put in that he would have changed his VOCAL performance, because it wasn’t as strong as it should be.

He is smart not to draw attention to that. Honestly I bet many people watching weren’t thinking of that at all. He could have said “I wish I hadn’t fallen…could have broken my neck!”

  • lostinidol

I love his comment about how his transformation came about, “I lived life.”

As far as I can see, there’s nothing to apologize for. He’s not being brought up on charges. The FCC isn’t calling him to testify. No heterosexuals were harmed in the making of the performance. (Love how the female audience responded when they showed the kiss. That should really discourage Adam from doing it again…not.) And I guess to all those folks who claimed to have been blindsided by Adam, who didn’t know he was about this, I hope we can count on you to never watch an Adam performance again.

  • IdolThoughts

I love that he offers an explanation that admits, “I got a little carried away.” But that he counters it with “not a damn thing”.

LOVE that. I find it so refreshing.

    so 2 songs ‘“ WWFM and ??? I hope its a ballad! Oh who am I kidding I don’t care which 2 ‘“ wow!

I hope it is either If I Had You, Broken Open or Fever.

  • sr4mjc

I think it might be better that he’s not drawing attention to the fact his vocal sucked. Two of my friends thought he did fine, so some people didn’t notice. Why advertise it? (I did think he sucked vocally though) Maybe he should talk about the recovery of the fall, which no one seems to have noticed at all. That’s a great story!

    The video looks great.

Since Monte was learning TFM a while back, I wonder if he’ll do that. Or an acoustic something.

  • rblaha1234

    I LOVED HIS BOOTS.

  • hypertwink

I’m done things that I wasn’t brought up on charges for but that doesn’t mean I didn’t say sorry for them if they were ill-thought or stupid or dangerous or just plain wrong.

  • DLee

I was at Target today and a woman next to me said to her husband, ‘Oh look Adam’s CD.’ I looked over and told her it was fabulous and I loved it. She said ‘really? Should I get it? I don’t know he’s kind of scary.’ I said, ‘They are just songs (good ones) he doesn’t pop out at you through the speakers!’ She looked at it a long time and out of the corner of my eye I saw her put it back.

Oh, Target was sold out of SuBo, Lady Gaga had only a few CD’s on the self, Adam had two sections that were almost full, Rihana had five full sections and it didn’t look like any were missing.

  • Natasha

Good Lord. His management couldn’t have purchased more intense publicity. Adam’s going to be just fine.

Right. You can’t buy this sort of publicity. I think this GMA cancellation may have been the best thing that could have happened since CBS was ready to step in. Now they need to choose one of the songs on the album with hit potential, get it radio play and hope it clicks.

WTF IS ADAM ON THE YAHOO HOME PAGE AGAIN?! and #6 most searched ?

    AND TIME WEIGHED IN??!! FML…

  • DLee

It is interesting what he said about watching everyone and feeling competitive. During the show I kept thinking he should be in his dressing room mentally preparing…the stress of watching and knowing you were going to go on soon must have been monumental….

  • mmb

FWIW, the Best Buy at 44th street and 5th avenue in NYC was full of people buying Adam’s cd today

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

    he is SOOOOO hot……

  • Chicagolaw

In terms of the not great vocals, he was so drowned out by the band and other chaos, you could barely hear the vocals. I think it is only the fans (and especially Adam fans, like me, who were expecting something more) who noticed and were really disappointed. I read a great quote somewhere,”how could anyone sound good singing while running around on playground equipment.” The song got so lost in the production.

What I find hilarious is that the guy took an awesome fall—fell down and rolled—and it’s like it never happened. It’s like nobody noticed. I don’t think a single interviewer asked about it.

  • DLee

I don’t have kids, but if I were watching that with, say, an 11 year old, I’d probably be REALLY uncomfortable.

My 11 year old AND my 13 year old were sound asleep – school night.

  • ilovetohateai

I wonder why no one has asked him why he FLIPPED the audience?

  • Destry

So I’m guessing he tends to favor more “girly” guys? Interesting.

I’d love to hear Pick U Up or Sure Fire Winners live.

Although If I Had You would be fun, just to see him do the y-y-y-y-y-y-y–y-you thing live

  • mouse

    Chicagolaw –
Adam did address the fall this morning (or was it yesterday idk) on some interview but for the life of me I don’t remember where (too much Adam info lol) and he said he was surprised at the ninja roll that happened, didn’t know where it came from

THIS!!! I say something like this on almost every thread about the subject and feel ignored. I REALLY think the fall threw off the vocal big time. It really sounded pretty good before that. I think the choreography for the MV looks great. He should have gone with something like that. Let him focus on the singing while the dancers do the crazy stuff around him…
In this interview when he says “nothing” I think the assumption is that we are talking about the sexual bits.

  • YankeeFan08

but I had to stay up an hour late to see it…

  • sealily1c

Most of me thinks he doesn’t need to apologize for a thing! It isn’t like he actuallyhad sex on tv or killed a cat (despite the pitch issues!)or bit the head off a bat for that matter. Another small part of me wishes he would do it anyway but, it’s true. People would find a way to shred him over that too.

“”I put this in the other thread, but I think it died. I don’t watch this show, but was there hoopla over the move at 2:21?”"

Absolutely Adam is a fighter and immensely talented and professional. Remember that “Rock Kick” lol he’s a trooper and he’s coming out of this quickly and better than before. I don’t endorse homosexuality but Adam is amazing I love him! He is epic and a “Bonafide” Star-international star that is. A huge part of America has fallen in love with this man for his talent and charisma.

  • bridgeymah

but he should have put in that he would have changed his VOCAL performance, because it wasn’t as strong as it should be.

really – when has an artist EVER apologized for a vocal performance. And why the hell should he. Sheesh.

Sure wasn’t perfect (and no idea why everyone expects him to be perfect every time he picks up a microphone) but that sort of song is notoriously hard to sing live, while dancing, with a sound mixer who was obviously having some kind of seizure along the way – in my mind he should be commended for actually performing live at all when nearly everyone lip syncs these things.

  • rockvixen

I think Ryan or some interviewer asked about Adam’s fall.

  • ilovekrisallen39

I think Jim said that when he interviewed Adam he asked aboutWhy he flipped the audience, the interview should be up tomorrow unless Jim post’s a crumb or two. He posted on twitter. but i don’t know how to post a link.

  • sealily1c

    flipped bird

Pure speculation, but I’d say it was to Aaron Hicklin, editor of Out magazine, and perhaps to everyone else to ever tried to force him to repress himself.

Don’t imagine it was for the audience. That makes no sense.

I never even saw it because I was busy trying to put my jaw back together after it had dropped. Not shocked at WHAT he did, but THAT he did it.

I hate rollercoasters, but somehow, some way, I do not want off this one!!!

  • MaggieDMD

Did anyone else notice that awesome female backup dancer who, when he stopped his roll, squatted down next to him and kept dancing to him as if that was all in the plan? Kudos to her.

Is that in pop? Or overall? Because if he’s #5 in pop and #10 overall, the overall rank would be DOWN from where he was yesterday — and the pop would be the same as where he was yesterday.

I loved how Adam coped with the trip up the stairs .. he must have had stunt man training in the past as he fell just like actors/stunt performers are trained .. it must have been scary for him as he had a cane in one hand and a mic in the other and the automatic reaction to tripping like that is to put your hands and arms out to save you .. but his hands were full so he “rolled” into and out of the fall like a real pro. Could have been dangerous rolling on your shouders though with those spikes there … lol

  • DLee

    He passed John Mayer.

LOL ‘“ no I didnt hear anyone saying they cared that he was sticking Joanna’s face up and down into his crotch?

Actually, there were all kinds of articles about it and Derek had to explain it and TV Guide and EW talked about it and interviewed him and Maks weighed in on his blog and… Yeah, people cared. And btw, she did not have her mouth on his crotch. I still thought it was gross and disgusting, although not as gross and disgusting as it would’ve been if she’d actually attached her mouth to his dick through his pants at some point. If she had, I think Derek probably would’ve been fired on the spot and ABC would’ve used the delay it has on DWTS because of Macy Gray talking about popping her cherry and all. Which they bleeped, btw. Imagine that. A little harmless discussion about popping her cherry. It must be homophobia. Except Macy Gray isn’t gay. So I guess it’s sexism and they wouldn’t let her do it because she’s a guy. Except she isn’t.

Someone said Adam’s attitude is too defiant. I disagree! An artist will always say, “I wouldn’t do anything differently.” That’s the nature of creative types. I love this interview and I am not usually an Alex Chung fan. Her post-Idol interview, with Kris, was one of the worst I’ve ever seen!

Yup, but then again, John Mayer went number 1 last week.

  • druzilla

adamisthemanfan, Rickey claimed many of the antics were not part of the rehearsal meaning he sandbagged the network and AMAs. That’s the kind of immature, unprofessional bridge burning that will quickly make you unwelcome as a guest as seen by the GMA cancellation. He also had gay fans who were appalled and embarrassed by what he did.

  • KrazeeK120

Correct…John Mayer sold 300k albums in the first week of his new album release.

On more thing and then I gotta be done, lol. While I didn’t like the AMA performance, I think it needs to be looked at in the context of the show itself and the other acts leading up to it. For anyone who didn’t watch live and is just pulling it up on a website, it would seem ten times worse. In the context of the show it was a bit of “more of the same shock and awe.” There was a lot of weird stuff on the AMAs Sunday night. Some sex stuff. And what about Lady Gaga, whom I tend to enjoy, playing the piano with her legs spread open in a nude body suit? I hate that it has kind of taken on a life of its own at this point. I think if the GMA concert hadn’t been canceled, the whole thing would have just died.

    Adam news on Extra next..NBC

  • DLee

    He passed John Mayer.

Yup, but then again, John Mayer went number 1 last week.

Correct’ ¦John Mayer sold 300k albums in the first week of his new album release.

I wasn’t in any way trying to imply that Adam was selling more than John Mayer. John Mayer is incredibly popular and successful and played all the time at our house. I just thought it was pretty good that Adam passed him at this point.

  • DLee

About the video – can I watch it now with my kids in the same room? Or should I wait? Kids aged 11 and 9.

  • Truthiness

Rickey claimed many of the antics were not part of the rehearsal meaning

    Well if Rickey says so…

sorry, you just lost me from there.

Agree. However, I think Mayer may be suffering a bit from lack of airplay of the single off his new album. I love John Mayer, seen him in concert twice, have all of his albums and bought the new CD, but I couldn’t tell you what the “single” from it is supposed to be. I am amazed that it has sold as well as it has. I guess he’s just really popular.

GMA are being silly, Yes Adam went way overboard, BUT he’s proven on American Idol… for what TWELVE weeks… he can handle live tv, he’s a smart guy that did a stupid thing… he was very cool the other time on GMA, too…

  • jpfan

Mayer is into his second week now. Albums with huge first weeks always fall 60% (or even more) their second week. Black Friday will help tremendously but he’s probably moving 120K this week. That’s pretty terrific single or no single.

By the way I could resist and went into my local Best Buy on the way home tonight. Neighborhood (trendy Manhattan). Best Buy must not care about albums because this week’s releases were poorly displayed. Adam looked like he’d sold most of what was on display (not that much was). The Fame Monster and Susan Boyle were both completely sold out. So judging my that, I predict they’ll go 1,2 this week with Adam and Rihanna fighting for 3rd. Oh and if you’re in the market for Kris Allen, Nora Jones and Taylor Swift albums, I know a BB where you’ll find a ton of them.

  • lucy

I think it might be better that he’s not drawing attention to the fact his vocal sucked.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a singer say that they apologize for their vocals not being up to snuff (I’m sure someone has — but I don’t think I’ve heard it, myself.) And I don’t really think there’s much place for that. We all have off nights for performing. And I don’t know that it does much for your future credibility to go around telling people about it later.

  • Starr

He was contradicting himself. First he says that when he flipped off the audience he knew he was doing something wrong, but then he goes on to say that the whole performance was proof that he was “in control”? No, you weren’t in control, Adam. That’s the problem. Not only was your singing shockingly not up to par, but you made all these improvisations that you felt were supposed to prove to Aaron Hicklin and your detractors that you’re “gay enough”. He let people’s opinions of him deter him from putting on his best performance. I admired him during Idol when he said that his mindset during shows was to keep things positive and not let the negative get you down. Well, I guess that mindset was chuckled out the window.

  • 123abc456

Well Adam does not seem to get what the problem was with his performance. He is unapologetic about a performance that can only be called crude and tasteless. There was nothing sexy about it. It was a pointless exercise that was for shock value and nothing else. He says people were scared. Scared of what? Does he think that he is the first person to discover sex or sexuality? He showed no class in the show, and he has shown zero class in the subsequent articles. He is clueless and does not seem to have anyone around him that will tell him that. IMO he should have apologized for offending people and not lectured the AMA’s or the American viewing public on a double standard. And to top it all off the performance without the crass sexuality was terrible.

sr4mjc: I put this in the other thread, but I think it died. I don’t watch this show, but was there hoopla over the move at 2:21?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo-eMFnRi0M

YankeeFan08: That’s worse than anything Adam did! Wow, apparently no one was minding the store at ABC when this took place. Someone should bring it to their attention.

    Hilarious!

I was over the moon about that performance. Every single part of it. I’m from the Freddie Mercury school “A concert is not a live rendition of our album. It’s a theatrical event.” The guy’s adrenalin and “FU for this week bitches” took him to another level imo,he finally cracked the discipline of 17 years of theater training. I’ve been waiting to see that. Not easy. Today on radio he said he was proud of that and the ninja roll “I didn’t even know I could do that”. I don’t think he knew he had that sweaty wired defiant finale in him. I wouldn’t wish for a moment to be different. He’s building character and confidence and maturing. And becoming the “rock star” he dreamed about.

He’s done more for LGBT in two twats and 5 minutes in front of 14.5 million people than Hicklin has in in the entire recent history of hypocritical wet rag Out magazine. Especially the disingenuous covers month after month. And managed to bitch slap Hicklin while he was at it. With a smile. YOU GO BOY!

Yes they scrubbed the video he said as much to Cantiello. But love how Tommy is the breakout star of the thing. lol.

Super cute interview!! I must say that particular studio audience was very excited to see Adam. So it really doesn’t look like Adam’s any less popular after his AMA performance. I never thought he would be though. One performance isn’t going to turn off the people from buying the album that were already going to buy the album. The people who were whining about the performance are the same people that have always been complaining about Adam. He could have performed flawlessly and they would have just found something else to gripe about. Oh well, they have too many issues and I doubt they intended to buy his album anyway. It’s great to see that Adam is still upbeat and not letting this effect him in a negative way.

I’m from the Freddie Mercury school ‘A concert is not a live rendition of our album. It’s a theatrical event.’

I’m right with you, Media Bias. Those are the kinds of concerts I want to SEE! The best always put on a show. Prince? The first time I saw him he was wearing a black raincoat over a purple velvet jockstrap – and that was all. ‘Little Red Corvette’ brought the house down. He used to hump the floor to completion during ‘Darling Nicky’. It was just Prince.

I saw Madonna in Japan. She turned a Japanese audience into a sweating, screaming mosh pit – not the usual thing over there, believe me. I expect (and am looking forward to) Adam doing it up with just as much moxie. Freddie would be proud. BTW ‘“ I had the pleasure of meeting Freddie Mercury once. He was sweet, caring and helpful (I was stranded at Narita Airport). The world lost more than a monumental talent when he died. It lost a pure soul.
