San Diego peeps who tuned into FOX 5 this morning for a weather report got Adam Lambert applying eyeliner to the FOX weather chick instead. After, Adam has advice for kids who want to sing, “Start listening to a lot of different music and recognize what you like…nothing is going to happen in your life if you don’t take risks.”

In another segment (watch after the jump) Adam reunites and is interviewed with his mom, who says noticed Adam’s talent at around age 10.

Adam was visiting the FOX studio as part of his Idol hometown visit to be aired on Wednesday’s results show.

BONUS: Adam sings the National Anthem at San Diego’s Mirmar Naval Base, video after the jump…

Hint: Smudging is the key…

OMG OMG OMG. This is so hilarious! I heard (read) comments about the weather fan girl in San Diego but this. is. SO. FUNNY! She looks like the girl who ripped her shirt off at the high school – could it be her? LOL

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Lucky weather girl! Here’s Adam singing The Star Spangled Banner at the Miramar Airbase.

I want Adam to do my eyeliner! Gah!! I love that clip, but this one with his mom is so sweet.

  • alliegirl

That weather girl seemed a little flighty the way she bounced around and couldn’t keep her composure.

  • iluvai

That was the cutest clip. Oh my goodness. Adam is such a good sport. He makes everyone feel so comfortable. His talent is out of this world, and so is his personality. What a sweetie.

  • haruhi

“Who cares about the weather?” Lol!

  • http://myspace.com/morganmadelynne marymagdalene

    Smudging the eyeliner, hmmm?
I will have to remember that!

    That was SO adorable!

  • iluvai

Zsus: Thanks for the link to Adam singing The Star Spangle Banner. Fantastic!!!!

  • ettacandy

Thanks for SSB – absolutely gorgeous. Thanks too for the video of the interview with him and his mother. You can’t fake that kind of connection – they are a tight family, and the love is palpable. *wipes tear*

ETA: Here’s to the unpopular “weird kids” who go on to great success after high school! Cheers!!!

  • iluvai

Star: That was the best video of Adam with his mom. What a loving and supportive mom (and dad). It’s easy to see where Adam gets his sweetness and beauty. Thanks for sharing!

  • Natasha

That was the cutest clip. Oh my goodness. Adam is such a good sport. He makes everyone feel so comfortable.

He really does. It was hilarious that he put eyeliner on her. You could tell he really wanted to do a good job too.

  • iluvai

I love American Idol and I want Adam to win already… so I can go back to my life! Ha Ha! Then I can wish my summer away until I take my kids to the Idol Tour in August.

Adam is magic! I am a fan forever!

  • wjmtv

    Adam’s mom is so purty.

  • Chrissy

Wow, the video with his mom was the sweetest thing. I know YMMV, but I never get the arrogant/cocky thing from him AT ALL. I’m glad that he seemed to have had a great homecoming and that he has embraced his inner weird kid!

    His Star Spangle Banner? Amazing.

  • sweetie99v

Adam definitely has a sense of humor and goes with the flow. His good personality will get him even further than his talent. The combination of the two is definitely dangerous!!

  • flynnsgirl

I have never heard The Star Spangled Banner sung as beautiful in my life. That was truly amazing.
MJ can you post that on the page?
All the haters should take a listen to that!

  • sweetie99v

After taking the stage, Lambert told the crowd to “embrace your weirdness.”

“This is an example of being who you are,” Lambert said. “Anybody who feels different or weird, screw it…. It’s cool to be different.”

    Thats my guy!! :clap_tb:

Wow, Adam’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was breath-taking.

I concur with flynnsgirl, MJ, it would be great if you could post it on the main page! (not that I am telling you what to do with your own blog hehe sorry :) )

  • flynnsgirl

me either, MJ, just asking. Please LOL

  • iluvai

Oh Adam… what can I say that the others haven’t already said???? XOXO

  • bruno

what i find amazing about the ssb, is that he didn’t even get near the top of his range. it was a walk in the park for him. so many singers really struggle making the transition from the low to the high, yet he ended up only going as far as the MIDDLE of his range. just amazing.

and good for him for singing it straight up. (no pun intended)

  • Susan

NO kidding, bruno! Most people come out so screechy on the high notes and that wasn’t even close to as high as he can go.

  • Natasha

Good point. It’s such a hard song to sing but he made it seem easy. It was very beautiful.

Whoever decided Adam should go to a military base and perform for the troops is brilliant. Here we’ve got the person who is widely publicized as the potential first gay American Idol, performing for the military, a career he could only choose if he were willing to hide the one thing about himself that is making his AI run such a media fixation. His SSB was beautiful. It seems he can sing anything effortlessly, as Slash said.

  • lizzy12345

    edit: stick to the topic

  • Lisa

That is one very tough song to sing & on top of that to sing it to the military who love that song!

Flawless, such beauty, warmth, passion and control. Stunning. Teared me up Boo! :wub_tb:

  • sweetie99v

Plus, he sang it with no music. even harder. I love his voice, and next week, I get 2 songs. :)

  • kijico3

Just beautiful, how perfect is he?? I cannot stop listening to him, I think I’m going “crazy” but I like it :wink1_tb:

  • mikeyb

I wonder how the other contestants did on the National Anthem.

  • sleepyinsomniac

This is what I have been waiting for from Adam, never mind that it was the SSB. Just a song that is sung that does not showboat his incredible range, but instead just focuses on the song and the beauty of his voice. What a treat! What I’m hoping for from Adam this week is one that reminds us what an incredible vocalist he is in terms of range and technical ability and one just like this. Best of both worlds.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Everyone knows smudging is the key for the rock look. Not so much for a job interview! LOL.

Floved the SSB. I normally don’t like the song as a song (not what it represents), but that was nice.

  • chicksineggz

Wow, star spangled banner was really good. (:

  • elisa3da

One word for Adam SSB performance: AMAZING !

  • weelassie

Wow SSB was lovely. I loved hearing the mid range of his voice. Awesome!

  • GeminiDolly

I was worried Adam was going to go all vocal gymnastics on the SSB, but I loved how he kept it simple and effortless.

Loved Adam’s ‘Star Spangled Banner’, simply beautiful.

I was bouncing between San Diego and Arkansas all day. Huge difference in the quality of the local stations productions. Did anyone who was at any of these notice if Idol had their own camera crews and sound people?

Was a very funny incident at one of the radio stations Adam went to. One of the older male personalities went completely fan girly over him. Hugging and kissing. He said he thought he was going to cry. I laughed :)

  • JOJOSIE

Adam sure gives the best interviews. He’s interesting and seems to really listen closely and responds just so naturally. Remust, thanks for posting those as I totally enjoyed them. Way to go Adam.

It look like Adam’s either singing “One” by U2 or “Wicked Game” by Chris Issak. It’s starts about 2:45 or so, and it looks like the producer is making him take several takes into the camera, saying each song choice.

I wonder if they’re trying to clear Simon’s first pick, and have a back-up just in case.

My favorite moment was when Adam arrived at the TV station and the reporter could hardly get his attention because he was so focused on paying attention to the people who had come out to see him. That was so sweet. I saw a similar moment with Danny in his coverage. In both cases I found it very touching to see that they were clearly sincerely grateful for the support from their fans. I hope it never becomes “old” for them, or that at least they will always remember what it was like when it was all new and overwhelming.

  • mk88

I have never heard The Star Spangled Banner sung as beautiful in my life. That was truly amazing.
MJ can you post that on the page?
All the haters should take a listen to that!

Seriously? I suggest you consult Youtube. Start with Franklin, Aretha. Then for some AI flavor check out Hudson, Jennifer. Then just sample any 75 – 100 or so other renditions that are on there, and see if you canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t try to acquire a little non-fangirl perspective in the process.

Mileage varies. Being a non American – I never have that many experience of listening to SSB – just a few here and there. However Adam is the one that make me willing to listen to it as a song rather than a foreign national anthem.

Perhaps some other singers sang beautifully since Adam is not the only one who can sing beautifully but its his charisma that make me listen to a song that i am not even emotionally invested. I was ‘forced’ to listen and unfortunately i am liking it more than my own country’s national anthem. That’s what special about his rendition.

  • Lisa

mk88, that was lovely. Just one word…. WOW.

ETA.. I am not a huge Aretha fan so my mileage varies also.

    “”"”I was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹forcedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ to listen and unfortunately i am liking it more than my own countryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s national anthem.”"”"

Are you Canadian? Because in my opinion, “O Canada” kicks the ass of the American-Taken-From-The-Tune-Of-An-Old-English-Drinking-Song-National-Anthem….

  • luvnlife

Remusl, thanks for posting that link to Jeff and Jer show in San Diego.
Adam interviews so well. He is disarmingly charming and exudes warmth and kindness. And, he is handsome. I enjoy listening to his music, but even more, I enjoy watching and listening because he has a presence and energy which he shares and gives off, even through the tv and internet. Does it matter who sang the SSB the best? Adam sang it his way; and it was brilliant.

  • Tony

Meh…so-so SSB (definitely not my favorite Idol SSB). At least he didn’t scream it (like he does everything else)

  • mk88

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ”à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹forcedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ to listen and unfortunately i am liking it more than my own countryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s national anthem.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ”à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ”

Clarification – not a canadian and it is not about the song alone but rather the presentation of the song. Again – mileage varies and music is very subjective. Hence difference of opinion should respected

  • brin

ITA luvnlife, he has been lovely to watch in all the footage today and comes across as very well spoken and down to earth.

As others have said YMMV, I personally thought his SSB was beautiful, I don’t follow any past Idol contestants so I wouldn’t be able to compare and wouldn’t care to anyway, I love his voice and what he does with that voice and this was another beautiful, effortless sounding song that I enjoyed listening to him sing. I guess a scream is in the ear of the listener.

You want to get into a pissing contest over who I think sings the best version of the SSB? Hate Aretha Franklinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s & Jennifer Hudsonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s versions. I think they suck. Since music is art and subjective and since I am not a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“fangirl,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ you jack ass. Keep your comments to yourself. We all know you hate Adam, you take great joy in posting about it every chance you get.
I am fully capable of having my own opinions about which singer I like. Considering I am not alone in my opinion that Lambert is pretty extraordinary, every magazine, blog, news article, music critic, etc., seem to agree.

Yep, THIS. I almost think it would be easier to go OTT on it; more difficult to just sing it “straight up” (hehe) and still deliver something that stops people in their tracks (most of us anyway – the haters love to hate just for the sake of pulling others into their negativity).

…Two more things – (1) I *love* Mombert. She’s so adorable. They clearly have a close and loving relationship. (2) I love how articulate Adam is in interviews, and how comfortable he seems talking to people. I saw a post by a woman somewhere else who met him this morning and spoke to him; she said that he looks directly into your eyes when he’s speaking to you.

P.S. I just watched the SSB clip again, and it proves my point about stopping people in their tracks – right at the beginning, there’s a lot of shrieking and screeching, which quiets down as soon as he starts singing. Anyone who can make the shrieking crazies be silent, is a winner in my book! lol

Adam’s Star Spangled Banner moved me. He started off gentle and soft and then raised the song to a higher level–without ever going into Scream On Territory.

    Just Lovely.

And a big thumbs up to the poster who commented about the irony of Adam singing at a military base. You can be the most courageous solider in the world but g-d forbid you admit you’re gay. Adios, amigos! Is this a MAD WORLD or what?

  • Lexus

I absolutely loved Adam’s rendition of SSB, but I have to admit – as much as I’m a major fan of Adam’s – Archie’s version from the Pro Bowl in Hawaii is still tops with me!

The clip with his Mom was beautiful. I loved when she said speaking of how sweet, gracious and humble he is, is about the most complimentary thing you could tell her…over all the singing accolades.

  • gingerly

I am one who likes straight versions of the SSB. I would have to say that none of the Idols have done a great version. That’s only my opinion but it’s the only opinion that matters to me. Actually, the best version I’ve ever heard was Toni Tenille (did I spell her name right?). I don’t like her but she sang it straight and strong and it was lovely. Adam’s was, however, more restrained than I would have guessed. I appreciate that part. He could have gone all diva on us and I appreciate that he didn’t.

I really really like Adam as a person. I just don’t much appreciate his voice. Yes, he has amazing range, but his tone does absolutely nothing for me. Best part of the day for me was when he did a shout out to weird high school kids. I think he’s a great guy!

  • heathus

I think, out of all the idols I’ve heard sing the National Anthem, Adam did the best. His lower register is really great, I almost prefer it to the high notes.

  • Dr. Tracey

The ‘reunion’ with his Mom is great, ” I haven’t seen you in like, a day” LOL
    Great interview.

Thanks MJ for the videos!!! How hilarious that the weather girl was a complete fantard!! The SBB was fantastic..not OTT like at a sports arena but more intimate because of the venue… Being in front of a 100% military audience is extremely emotional and overwhelming; I love the way Adam sang “Free” and “Brave”. What a beautiful voice. I had goosebumps and shed a couple of tears after that. (Retired miliary family here!)

  • weareallinnocent

Awww, Adam, what fun. I hope he really enjoyed himself.

Thanks for the videos everyone. So nice to be able to see so much of these hometown visits. I’m glad SD came through for Adam.

For me, I enjoy most every talented singer’s rendition of the SSB. For me, it’s the context and meaning, and then the beautiful voices. And everyone does something a little different. It’s a crazy difficult song to sing, and I do tend to like it performed traditionally without too much extra flare. The times I tend not to thoroughly enjoy it are those where the singer struggles for the highs, which happens more times than not — but then only because I’m anxious for the singer as though my anxiety might help them reach the notes. LOL (Well, and of course, I also didn’t like the infamous Rosanne Barr fiasco at a ballgame or when Willie Nelson forgot the words at, I believe, a political convention?)

Anywho, after all that, I really thought Adam’s performance was stellar. Loved, loved, loved hearing so much of his lower register, and it was so easy to enjoy because, for him, it was indeed effortless. So, kudos to Adam on a job Very Well Done!

  • mahrikka

What a day for Adam! I had the day off yesterday, and when I requested it weeks ago, I had planned to spend a nice spring day outdoors. Instead, I was glued to my computer screen. Not only do I love Adam’s voice but how he so beautifully represents what one can do when having the courage to follow your dreams. RemusL, thanks for the Fox 5 San Diego video summary of Adam Lambert Day. There were some things I had missed.

  • sunchick

Am I the only person who doesn’t mentally catalogue different versions of the SSB from best to worst? The only one that stands out to me is the Hendrix version anyway, but Adam did an admirable job and didn’t infuse it with a bazillion ridic runs, which is a usually a big ew.

  • sweetie99v

  • LaurelG

Adam’s version of the SSB was effortless and gorgeous. I’m one of those people who starts to inwardly cringe when singers approach those high notes because you just never know if they’ll make it, but I have no worries with Adam. I also thought the tone of his voice was beautiful. He’s amazing because it seems as if he can change up the tone of his voice, sometimes making it sound more pure and other times more gritty, depending on the song. Love him.

I saw a post by a woman somewhere else who met him this morning and spoke to him; she said that he looks directly into your eyes when heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s speaking to you.

I have always noticed this about Adam and I’m surprised I haven’t seen more comments about it. It’s part of his charisma. He seems to lock eyes with the person he’s talking to and probably makes them feel as if they’re the only person in the room.

  • wjmtv

Adam did an admirable job and didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t infuse it with a bazillion ridic runs, which is a usually a big ew.

Hear, hear! I love it when singers don’t decorate that song with a million-and-one extra notes. For me, that was the best part of Adam’s version.

Morning FOX 5 San Diego interview of Adam: http://tinyurl.com/pxnpbc

Loved seeing and hearing Adam during his morning interview with Jim and Jer. They LOVE him like we do!

So Adam answered the question of who he auditioned with in SF and it was Danielle and John (not sure who John is).

The SSB is really awesome! I’m surprised that he didn’t sing more songs there. Why was that I wonder?

I admit, I would have loved to have Adam do a random song medley concert like Gokey. It would have been fun!

  • kathrynTX

Finally listened to Adam’s national anthem rendition. That was just beautiful! I think he’s great and deserves a huge career breakout from this whole experience. I’ve loved him on the show since I first saw him. His technical singing ability and range are staggering. He’s nice to look at and I bet he’s attractive in person too. I don’t care if he’s straight or gay, I still find him an attractive man!

However, I’ve been asking myself all along if I’d buy an album or go see him in concert (solo). He’s not my “usual” type of recording artist, singer/songwriter type I’d like to see live. Now, I think I’d buy his album. I’d love to see HIM in concert, but I don’t think I’m going to the AI tour this year. There are too many others in the Top 10 who I really don’t want to pay to see and make the effort of going to a show.

    GO ADAM! Love ya.

Finally watched the Clear Channel interview and this one was more loose and fun. Glad both radio stations coordinated their questions. They loved him there too.

Adam thought he looked short and “fat” on TV because TV adds 10 pounds! But he only wears Medium to Large tshirts and some fans are sending him XL!

First gig was on a cruise ship around the world after 6 months of looking for work when he was 19.

How he set up an office at the mansion using his personal desktop computer to do music research and experimenting with his song’s arrangements on GarageBand (?) during the competition.

Approaches the competition as a medium to entertain people with music that he enjoys and thinks will be fun (as opposed to trying to please others).

Gawd! Just LOVE everything about him! He really is a great spokesperson for the AI machine (just like I thought with David Cook last year).

ETA: Thanks for bringing over Adam singing at his HS graduation. Adam has definitely grown up! He is Alison’s age there and has the vocal chops, but hadn’t blossomed into the performer that he is today. I’m glad he waited until he was 26!

I love my country (the USA) -even more so since living in Europe- but I am far from a flag-waver and see both the beauty and the ugliness of the States…as I do of Europe.

LOL fan wars over the SSB. That’s funnah.

Clarification – not a canadian and it is not about the song alone but rather the presentation of the song. Again – mileage varies and music is very subjective. Hence difference of opinion should respected

Uh, I don’t think you read my statement in the spirit in which it was intended. I was making a joke and making fun of the SSB– the song itself– and the fact that it is my country’s national anthem. I wasn’t dissing anyone’s particular rendition of the anthem. Many people think a different song would be more appropriate for the anthem because the SSB is in fact set to the tune of an old English drinking song.

Aw, I want his rendition of SSB on iTune. :-)

I listened to Adam’s and Danny’s SSBs back to back, and Adam actually does his in a lower key than Danny.

    Interesting.

I listened to Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s SSBs back to back, and Adam actually does his in a lower key than Danny.

    Interesting.

Adam is a smarter singer than Danny.

I love both Archie’s and Adams, two of my overall favorites. My fave of all time is Mr. Marvin Gaye. YMMV, but it made me both patriotic and sad at the same time. He put a gospel, jazzy mournful feel to it. Genius.

Adam had an awesome day! All three do and I think they are so deserving of this to make it so far in the competition. They all seem to be touched by it and I am glad they all feel so much love. At first I was worried coz Southern Cali wouldn’t be so excited about this but it turned out to be a great event as well, more intimate, and great messages to the kids. I think people will see Adam in a new light after watching his homecoming package and he may gain some new fans. The military base thing I thought is awesome! And can we say what a nice job to San Diego? I read somewhere that they didn’t know until a few days before that Adam’s homecoming would be in SD not LA. So really they only had a short time to pull it together and they have done a nice job! The reporters are well spoken. Weather girl/fangirl is hilarious. And I think radio interviews are great.

I wonder if they chose SD for Adam because at the time they were setting these visits up, Allison was still in the running and LA would have been her town (she’s never lived anywhere else).

wjmtv I think it is true. 2 LA homecoming would be so boring and we all know how well that turned out for Kat McPhee :ponder_tb:

How he set up an office at the mansion using his personal desktop computer to do music research and experimenting with his songà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s arrangements on GarageBand (?) during the competition.

I’m guessing he has an iMac desktop since he uses Garage Band. GB is Mac software that comes with all new Macs (part of the iLife bundle). Setting up the computer consists of finding (very little) desk space and plugging it in. The monitor and computer are all the same unit. It’s pretty awesome. I’m a Mac junkie :)

Forgot to mention … No matter what you think of our National Anthem as a song, it’s something that I hold dear. The ONLY thing that bothered me about Adam’s performance was the hooting (and some sign waving) from the audience while he was singing. Even more so, since it was at a military base.

Adam did a beautiful job on it. There are many interpretations, some work, some don’t.
