Adam Lambert Hits #1 on Amazon

Question: Are we sure that pre-ordering from Amazon counts towards the first weeks sales? I remember in years past that I pre-ordered and received the album early and it didn’t count towards the first week. Those first week numbers are hugely important. Anyone know for sure?

I wouldn’t be so sure. I think that if you get your album before the release day it doesn’t count. And it’s pretty common to receive Amazon cds the day before their official release.

Don’t know if this is a big deal. But I guess it’s a good thing. Congrats to Adam and fans.

I think that the main thing about the Amazon ranking for Adam is that it is totally based on word of mouth through the internet. It may only be a few hundred units but IT IS MORE than anyone else is selling at this precise moment in time on this particular website…without a single leak of any of his material and really not a friggin clue of what kind of material his album may include.

What all this says to me is that it is Adam’s voice and his song interpretation that is getting people to like him. And, hopefully, like many performers of the past it will be his Voice and his skill that will keep people interested and buying even if his material isn’t necessarily their particular cup of tea.

As fans, I think people just wanted music buyers to give Adam a chance…to get past the social aspects surrounding him and just buying into his talent. It looks like that is happening. And it’s also very nice that the online media is taking the time to write a blip or two…that says that they, too, think that Adam has something appealing. Otherwise no one would have picked up the story…since it really isn’t NEWS.

ETA: All sales are counted towards the numbers earned for an album. If the official release date is the 24th of November any albums shipped prior to that are counted on the 24th. If pre-sales weren’t included in the first days total would any record company even consider pre-selling anything. That just wouldn’t happen…they are more invested in the numbers game than any fan could ever hope to be.

Back in 2005 when Constantine Maroulis got voted off American Idol in 6th place, his fans ( I was one of them, uggghh) bought his band’s album that was released the week before on Amazon. It went to #2 the next day and stayed there awhile. He actually had two albums, one was explicit, and that one went to #8. Everyone thought that he was going to be at the top of the billboard charts but he only made it to #125. It totalled to under 8,000 units sold. And Amazon was bigger back then.

I still think Adam’s Itune’s are going to be impressive. I still think Adam has the most potential ut of any Idol before him. I just wanted to give you guys a little persepective and didn’t want you to get your hopes up TOO high.

Amazon will deliver the CDs once it is released, so it counts for week 1 sales. This was discussed deeply on Sunday when the pre-orders started to raise in Japan and the UK, and then in the US

Amazon has an 18% market share of the US CD Album market and sells a much higher share of presale albums. Here are the estimated current shares of the US CD Album market (based on units sold).

Walmart 29%
Best Buy 22%
Amazon 18%
Target 12%
Others 18%

I think this is only referring to PHYSICAL CDs. (which I THINK is about 80% of the overall music selling market).

Constantine has nowhere near the star quality Adam does. His album is number one more so because it is highly anticipated by a lot of people across a lot of different demographics. However, I am waiting with anticipation to see what his first song sounds like. I hope it isn’t overproduced like most music is today. So I agree in that we should try and stay level headed because the music industry can be veeeeery funny. Just look at how many of us thought he was going to win Idol.

I posted this in the other thread but am moving it here. I have my eye on Drake’s Mom and so far she not really being bombarded with tweets yet. Of course it’s still early!

I am wondering in what way she heard Adam’s songs. Is he carrying around a CD? Did they listen at the breakfast table? Or did he sing them for her? And are these the THREE songs Aimee tweeted about??????????

I don’t care either HSM, I’m basking in the glow of Adam being on top. Silly, but I don’t care. I wonder if he knows yet?

Sales outside the AI bubble depend on the quality of the music and the promotion. I’ll start worrying about that when the single comes out.
For now, this is free publicity, and I love it.

So, it’s a fair game for fans to bombard her with tweets.

I’m going to disagree with that. To me, it is uber-stalkerish to be following the mother of Adam’s boyfriend on Twitter at all.

Every time some private citizen even mentions Adam, they get a ton of new followers and bombarded with questions. I’m sorry, I don’t think people need Adam news so bad that they have to harass the entire twitterverse.

And yeah, Twitter is public, and blah blah blah with all of the other rationalizations. But just because you CAN do something, it doesn’t mean you SHOULD. And, just because it’s cheered on by the kool-aid drinkers on the fanboards, doesn’t mean the rest of the world finds it acceptable.

End of rant (sorry, that’s really been bugging me). I just find the stalking and criticism of Drake and his family really, really disturbing.

Congrats to Adam on a job well done. I’m actually shocked at the presale frenzy – especially when no one has heard a peep of this CD. It requires a lot of faith, so I’m surprised.

I’m not sure if the Amazon numbers are indicative of anything, but I will say, the boy sure has buzz. I’ve been around MJ’s since season 5, and I’m tempted to say that Adam’s buzz is somewhat off the charts (I don’t mean the prolific fan buzz – that’s in lockstep with previous years – I mean the actual honest to goodness media buzz). I’m actually quite impressed with how Adam’s been able to keep his name in the headlines.

Well, duh, isn’t this true for Kris, Adam, or Allison. Idol fandom is good for, at most, a hundred thousand or so of sales. If any Idol wants to get into the 500,000 to a million range he/she better appeal to those outside of the fandom umbrella. And who is to say that Kris or Adam or Allison has more appeal to the general public.

I just think it is funny that if ANYONE does well with the confines of the online Universe there is always someone who pipes up and says that they are limited to the online fan and nobody else cares. My wish is that the 750,000 Idol fans that saw the tour will buy albums from Kris and Adam and Allison and Danny, even. That would be enough to make all four of these guys huge successes.

*Amazon and/or Barnes and Noble both report to Nielsen SoundScan, which is the company that tallies up cd sales and reports them to Billboard. You can buy or preorder from either place.

*New releases are released on Tuesday so that is when the counting begins and it continues until Sunday night. The tallying starts Monday morning when the companies begin reporting the sales to SoundScan. You can actually watch the tallies at hitsdailydouble.com/, it is rather fun to watch the numbers come in. It is an excellent idea to buy the CD on the release day. SoundScan makes its estimates of sales for the week based on first day sales, and big buzz is generated by big first day sales.

*Don’t ever buy the single the Monday after it’s released, because your sale won’t count toward first week figures.

The thing is, when people try to run down the significance of the Amazon sales is it is all relative. Adam is being rated with the same system that is rating Babs, the Beatles, SuBo and M.J. and he is soaring right now.

It’s like Nielsen ratings, they are an imperfect system that samples a very small few, but they proven over the years (and why they are still around), that the ratings are credible because everyone is ranked the same way.

Well her first single is ‘Wild Horses’ ’ ¦.

I read several articles saying Jon Bon Jovi wants to collaborate with her and Mick Jagger thinks her version of Wild Horses is better than his.

I will be buying one copy no matter what it sounds like – but I want to see what bonus tracks are where.

I had to walk home to the music of Adam (I do that periodically). And whan I hear FG and One (studio), I think, Geez, how can this guy NOT have a strong-selling album? He can flat out SING and he can flat out PERFORM. He is selling this album based on WORD OF MOUTH. That is it. There is no name of album. There is no leakage. There are no names of songs, with the exception of Strut (which Adam will surely do in one of his videos). We don’t even know if TFM will be part of the 2012 road block marketing blitz (tho chances are good that it will be). This is based on WORD OF MOUTH and MEDIA INTEREST. That’s it. RCA isn’t doing a thing. Adam hasn’t done any press since the Tour. And he has gone MIA.

So, um, hells yes I’m excited. And I have mh own thread to be excited about it.

Same here! I can’t wait to get Adam’s album, but being in Mexico, orders with Amazon take weeks to arrive, sometimes more than a month, so I’m waiting to buy it on iTunes.

I am sure that we all realize that the Amazon pre-sales may not account for a whole lot of cd’s. However, fans are so excited because they created the buzz for Adam. Their research, their twittering and blog promotion, and the media followed to increase the buzz already created by the fans..

The fans rightly deserve to pat themselves on the back, because Adam has received such wonderful, free media buzz that he will not have to pay for later from his record company.

At this point, the actual # of cd’s does not matter, it is the excitement & buzz. THAT may eventually translate to sales outside the Idol fan base, the idol bubble. Watch twitter closely , not everyone who is twittering about Adam is an Idol fan anymore….

It seems to be “OK” to let it out you are working with him, but absolutely nothing else! Given the number of people that MUST be working on this, it is astounding that there has been so little information. The guy who tweeted earlier about the song being “catchy” deleted that tweet within a few minutes.

Wicked Soundtrack is # 100 and it’s been in the top 100 for 1,032 days – impressive.

why is Adam’s album listed at $9.99 on amazon.com, but both Kris’ and Alison’s are listed at $13.98? I don’t get that…I’d think it would be the other way around, if anything, given that there is more buzz about Adam…

I’m so glad you posted this here. A breath of reality in a sea of flailing Adam fans.

I HOPE everything everyone is wishing and predicting for Adam comes true plus 100 times more,

However, I learned the same lesson you did but my revelation was the “winner” of Season 5. Because of that, I’m more skeptical of my own excitement.

It’s one of my pet peeves when people rate or review an album that has’t been released yet and they’ve obviously not heard it .. it seems to happen all the time especially if a person has a rabit fan base .. to me it kind of puts a mockery on the whole rating/review thing

Oh to be politically correct in the world of music….J Bon is using SuBo as a little bit of “keep myself in the limelight” (like he’d collaborate with a frumpy housewife) and Mick Jagger is just being nice to a middle aged spinster who is pretty emotionally fragile. Words are pretty cheap in this day and age….we have all heard them. Even our Idol favs get some hyperbole like this from their important “fans”. Do most people believe it…nah. Only the super invested! (Like me and Brian May).

I can say that I am 90% sure that I will like Adam’s album. I like to listen to all genres, rock, pop, jazz, country, and electronica.

As long as I can hear Adam’s voice and the songs are not overproduced or too bandzilla -even tho I like No Bo the some parts of the music are too loud relative to the rest of the song- I will be satisfied but I hope to be dazzled.

I really miss not having interviews or new music video to watch.
So lately I will watch the Ford Crazy duet. When I listen to him sing that song with gentle passion I rememer why I flail and sqee.

Love Barbra, but Adam is #1 with a green arrow and only on the chart for 3 days — so that makes it impossible that Barbra sold more units in the past 4 or 5 hours. Actually the #2 headed up could be selling more, but not the #2 heading down. And Barbra did great on her Amazon presale.

ETA: I just got your point. SInce Babs delux is #4 and the Babs 1 disc is #2, if you combined them she is probably selling more units. Could be. But there is not way to know the difference between #1 and #2 + #4. So who knows.

Just finished reading through this thread and the headlines. It’s been a busy day. I thought it would take several more days or weeks for Adam to get to #1. This is a pleasant surprise.

I’m taking one day at a time. Celebrate today, worry about the significance later. The ride is exhilarating.

Q3, I agree with you that Adam’s current sales are probably higher than Barbra’s, but she has the benefit of two months’ worth of presales … I was just referring to their position on the chart, which might be different if Barbra’s two versions were added together. Now that Barbra’s album has been released I’m sure her numbers will begin to decline, with Adam’s continuing at a high pace thru his release date (and hopefully beyond!).

All retailers, including Amazon have terms that say: “We reserve the right to limit quantities.” And for IP products, electronics, licensed products and a number of other products that have “authorized dealers”, there are also a variety of limitation to make sure that retailers/authorized dealers do not supply “foriegn” resellers or unauthorized dealers.

I dare not go check again, I might just click 2+0 after the 2 = 20 – with my current state of glamphoria.
My sisters have ordered as well. They were funny they said that the CD might just be like Rolling Stone Mag – go out of print. And I thought they were not Adam fans just casual listeners.

Just finished watching the video on this blog for the entry dated 9/29/09 after it was recommended on another site. It’s a fascinating video contrasting Adam’s AI performances with the dress rehearsal footage (shown at the end of the show for phone numbers). I have to say it’s amazing how different some performances were from the dress rehearsal to live performance and to me, shows how instinctual and innovative he can be when singing. Have a look see, it’s pretty interesting.

ETA: No boundaries sounded better in dress rehearsal I think.

OK just for fun I tried Kris Allen and it lets you order 30 CD’s. Of the top 10 there is a 3 unit limit on everything except #9 Michael Buble (30 limit) but headed down. So it looks like a best seller limit.

Wow. That’s incredible. Thanks for sharing. I had a *feeling* that he nailed MW in rehearsal but lost breath and therefore went pitchy on the final note (which was not the case in the finale MW). What I have noticed is that, b/c the rehearsal footage is what Idol uses to show the contestant’s numbers, b/c they are TOO STUPID TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO USE INSTANT REPLAY, it is often much different, and often better. I found this to be the case with Feeling Good and also with One. I always wished we could see both performances to compare them, and this video gives us some insight.

lol…been having fun reading some of the comments…some of u guys are hilarious…just a sidenote on the whole Barbara Streisand thing with her two cd’s…I was expecting her cd’s to sell (well) because for those that dont know she was recently on Oprah and performed some songs… and her new album was advertised, (Oprah=millions of viewers=lots of cd sales) whereas Adam’s cd pre-sale, as some have pointed out spread by word of mouth and shot straight to no.1 and that is impressive especially considering most ppl now a days don’t purchase music anymore…

I also love the part where he says people dont have to contribute in his name… it makes me feel even more like he truly just is excited for kids to get opportunities to develop their artistic talents. What is not to like about this guy?

Thanks for the rehearsal footage. I hadn’t realized that they played rehearsal footage during the time they show contestants’ numbers, although thinking back over it, I can definitely remember knowing there was something different feeling about the clips, ha.

Just an FYI – Adam’s twitter followers passed 195,000 today. Still on track for 200,000 in very early October. Unless something happens to speed it up (TFM or single?) my guess is it will be this weekend.

ETA: with regard to the similar artists thing – i have the same issue with Pandora. i created an Adam radio station and it includes other idols in the play list and mostly Kris. i thought it based your play list on the musical characteristics of the songs, but i guess other factors play into it like them both being on idol “albums”.

Wow. That’s incredible. Thanks for sharing. I had a *feeling* that he nailed MW in rehearsal but lost breath and therefore went pitchy on the final note (which was not the case in the finale MW).

If I’m remembering right, during the Larry King interview, Adam said he accidently sang harmony on that last note of MW during th elive performance, hence the “off” note.

I just watched the video with the rehearsal clips. Adam is just fabulous. The way he changes the way he sings at every performance is amazing. And his voice. I listen to Adam while I am driving, working, cooking, walking in the street and I never get tired. But ROF is special, I get goose bumps every time I listen to it, and when I watch the video, better don ´t say what I get

I’m not opposed to Adam being on oprah–she’s one of the strongest brand influencers in the us. I never watch her, but an appearance on her show would do more to promote the Adam lambert brand than just about anything he could do. There really is no downside. Who cares if the audience is filled with all the middle aged moms. He could easily shake it off with a subsequent performane at some sort of alternative venue.

I was on my way to home when I learned that Adam made #1 in Amazon. Since then I can’t help smiling. Even the wind in the windy city can’t blow the grin off my face. Then I headed to a class. I was in such a good mood that I not only took class notes but also answered some stupid and obvious questions. The professor was happy too. Conclusion, Adam doing good makes the rest of the world better.

Green Arrow *is* a superhero. He’s a Batman wannabe (wealthy playboy who is also an expert archer – no powers.) with his own facial hair issues.

That is what I see too. I am so glad that he introduced us to this charity. The arts are important. I have connected to all of the projects that I donated to. It reminded me of my intro into music and how important it was for me and my family. I want these kids to experience what I did.

I will continue to seek out projects that resonate with me, but I am going to do it not just because of Adam, but because it feels right. I am glad that he said we don’t have to do it in his name because I think that time has passed. We should continue to do it because in our hearts we feel it is the right thing to do.

I’ll be honest and say I don’t think he’s even remotely attractive with this new look. I can’t quite place why but it looks strange to me and I usually like guys with facial hair. It distracted me through the whole video and not in a good way.

adamaloha, I wanted two copies, one for me, and one for eBay, but I couldn’t get the 2nd one ANYWHERE IN BOSTON–the 1st one came from my supervisor–so I had to make do with copy #1. I never thought the EW cover would get such play. Wow. Thankfully, I sub to EW. It’s a good thing I ordered TBA, b/c who knows how long *that* will stay on the shelves (or what it will cost).

I do not get the animosity toward Oprah. What? Are we still in the ’80s? Oprah has been consistently positive, empowering and generous and operates at the highest level of integrity.

She has made millionaires out of how many guests and contributors? She has launched the careers of more people than any of us will ever know. She has saved countless lives and paid for more educations (college and otherwise, here and throughout the world) than many international foundations.

I truly don’t get the negative backlash, other than it’s perpetuated by people who don’t watch her show. There is a Midas touch in this world, and it’s being anointed by Oprah. And Ellen is right there behind her.

They are both profoundly powerful women and it will only benefit Adam to be endorsed by them.

Clearone…I am sure he will. Glitter and eyeshadow does not got well with facial hair. When it comes time for him to make public appearances to promote his album he will definitely be clean shaven as it will give him the freedom of a wider rage of looks. Adam never likes to be pigeonholed into one look.

No, I think it will be released a bit after the movie is released. My thinking (which is probably really way off base since I know very little about marketing strategy, but it’s fun to pretend like I know what I’m talking about)is that they chose Adam to sing the song because the current excitement over him would draw his fans to the movie to hear his song. If we hear all of it ahead of time, we might be less likely to invest in the movie.

Does anyone know for SURE that “Time For Miracles” will be previewed during the roadblock? I haven’t read this anywhere.

I remember when a similar marketing stunt occurred during the 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead”. They previewed the first 10 minutes of the movie on the USA Network and it was just that: 10 uninterrupted minutes of the movie. I found a link for it here.

I’m just wondering why TFM would even be played during the 2-minute clip — unless that specific 2-minute portion of the movie uses TFM as background music.

My thinking (which is probably really way off base since I know very little about marketing strategy, but it’s fun to pretend like I know what I’m talking about)is that they chose Adam to sing the song because the current excitement over him would draw his fans to the movie to hear his song. If we hear all of it ahead of time, we might be less likely to invest in the movie.

They chose Adam because he was the best singer for the song they wanted to portray. (Broken record, I know), this is a $250M budget, worldwide release; the director/producers had their choice of vocalists from around the world. Emmerich is not American and likely could not care less about American Idol, except that awareness was brought to certain entertainers. If anything, it was a risk to use Adam as opposed to using a more established act.

All’s we have been hearing the past few months is that what looks like buzz to the AI world does not translate to any “outside-world awareness”. They weren’t throwing anyone a bone with this. An established act is going to have a much larger following than even an AI champion.

The song is part of the movie’s promotion. Big budget movies have ONE WEEKEND to open. A major opening trickles down and can mean huge international sales. There is no logical reason to release the song after the film has opened. That only happens if a song that isn’t meant to be a “theme song” surprisingly takes off.

Just got home to the #1 news! YAY Adam!! Let’s keep him @ #1, where he belongs. So excited for this, wish it was November.

Of course not, Tony. Obviously it might not be previewed at all. But, guess what? That doesn’t negate the fact that Adam has his finger in the pie of a highly promoted, potential blockbuster. Now, does it? Be honest.

I remember when a similar marketing stunt occurred during the 2004 remake of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ . They previewed the first 10 minutes of the movie on the USA Network and it was just that: 10 uninterrupted minutes of the movie. I found a link for it here.

No, there is nothing official — and I can’t see that the endsong will be part of the 2 minute pormo — but the song credit might be. There was a report from a ONTD_AI member who has had a lot of correct inside information that it was part of the roadblock — but that doesn’t mean that it is part of the 2 minutes on air.

There are many, many components of this 2012 promotion — the major ones are:

The TV Roadblock: 2 minutes on US & Canada TV – estimated viewership 110 to 120 million. There is an offical report that this will be a 2 minute clip of the movie. It will also be available online and Comcast OnDemand (HD). Largest simultaneous media buy in history.

Several additional online and media promotions planned to support the TV.

There are many online viral campaign elements that have been going on since November 2008 — election, fake Institute, contests, movie info, and so on.

It is a fairly safe bet that the soundtrack will be released before the movie opens. Based on current marketing trends, I expect the single to released before the album. And the album to be released 3 to 4 weeks before opening. That means the single should be released soon.

For Emmerich’s most similar recent movie, “Day After Tomorrow”, the soundtrack was released 5/18/04, the movie opened worldwide 5/26-28; Japan & Korea 6/4-5.

And absolutely yes!!! I couldn’t be happier for Adam that his pre-sales are #1 (or even close to being #1). Naysayers can take their skepticism and run with it. But the rest of us are just glad to see it all unfolding as it should … even without advance publicity. It’s a triumph of it’s own and it’s also a sign that world domination healthy, moderate success is just beyond the horizon. Yay Adam!!!

Amazon sales may not be the final arbiter as to who is the most commercially successful recording artist ; but Adam’s number one rank in the Best Selling music category is a feat in itself –
-the album is not yet finished, and no sampler has been released to the public.
-the album is coming from an artist who has never sold a single album before, thus pre sales is literally a leap of faith , and
-the album is from the one who did not even win the singing competition that was supposedly decided by millions of Americans voting for their choice.

These make great stories that media will love to retell in waves. And which I earnestly hope will fuel further sales.

Some thoughts I have on the Adam Storm.

Do you know that after a drought, the best kind of rain to get is a slow steady drizzle. Then it can soak into the ground. A downpour is not as beneficial, as much of it runs off the dry ground and flows away.

This is our information drought. To relieve it, want the kind of news that people can absorb and savor and soak up, not the kind that get’s lost down the rain gutter!

Adam being #1 on Amazon is very cool but in reality Amazon accounts for a small fraction of sales overall. I’m interested to see what happens when his album becomes available for pre-order on itunes.

It had the initial jump from the AI’ers, then started dropping, but as it is picking up airplay, people are buying it because they like it. I hope that for Adam too. I cannot wait to see how his first single does on ITunes- that’s when I am going to be jumping up and down.

Btw, I cannot go to Walmart to buy a CD since I am not in US (remember, there is a world beyond the US boundaries)

Actually digital sales still only account for about 30% of total sales. If you look at the sales charts for last week for example Daughtry sold something like 15K and of those 2K were digital.

Walmart is the biggest retailer for music though but I think that’s mainly due to convenience and pricing. They’ve been able to push other music retailers out of business by offering better deals. My only problem with Walmart is that they edit their CDs for “offensive” content.

I am not sure I understand this. MJ has been an Adam fan from the beginning. She has said so, and I also remember her conversations with Rickey and Jim after each of the IA shows, which I followed on Rickey ´s site not to wait for the TV show (it was aired on Saturdays in my country). However, as a true journalist she has to play the devil ´s advocate not to be taken as a fantard. MHO.

Mj is open-minded and gives reliable news about Kris on Adam blogs-always a debate. I’ll say it here and now. If need be than I will gladly post here no more either. Roadblock in this case is a short, promotional media blitz for the movie 2012 that’ll cover almost all TV networks simultaneously at a certain time. Thanks to lulumarie’s post I was able to find our time— it’ll be on during the mentalist.. or private practice.. or jay leno.. set your dvr for any of those programs.

If Itunes accounts for 30% and Amazon is 5-10% ( I think MJ pointed that out in one of her tweets yesterday) Sixty percent is still physical CD’s bought in the store? That seems odd to me. Not doubting you, just find this part of it really interesting and want to get a better grasp on it.

Well I am no AI devoted fan, believe me. To me it was an actual “Cheesy” show. I was flipping the channels on night and there he was. But, to get back to Tony’s question from the prior page about why TFM would be in the roadblock, I have just a couple of points:

1) I can’t imagine that they are just showing the first two (or five) minutes of the film. They are going to want to show lots and lots of the special effects (which surely come later).

2) *If* TFM is in the roadblock and *if* — as the title suggests — it’s a song focusing on hopefulness in the face of disaster, then I can very easily imagine it being used during a portion. Just imagine it as an extended trailer….

All I know is that I wish Amazon would get their crap together. If you search for ‘Adam Lambert’  on their home page, you still don’t get his new release until page 2, item 22. WTF??

Maybe webmasters here (rowenaine???) could answer this better than me, but I suspect it’s search results based on history, and historically, there hasn’t been a CD there to find. As time goes by, I would expect that the CD would start to move UP in the search results’ ¦ if Bob/Rod can maintain his upward-thrusting momentum and keep it up until a suitable climax is reached, that is’ ¦..

anthrogeek, I’ve been puzzling over this myself. Amazon, like Google and other major sites, use highly guarded algorhythms for their search processes. Although one would think simply typing in the appropriate keywords (like ‘adam lambert’ for goodness sake!) would return the proper results, there are likely many factors that prevent this: the “spider” (website crawler that seeks out keywords) may not have found the keywords yet; the search item itself is not popular enough (i.e. sales rank in comparison to other items – not necessarily in music); and the fact that Adam’s album doesn’t have a title is probably throwing the search off. In most cases it’s probably seeking out the actual cd name of “Adam Lambert” which is why that Sin Synthetic single keeps coming up.

I wish I had a definitive answer for you. To me, the biggest problem is that making the item show up at the top of the search is not something that can be forced manually — otherwise Amazon, I’m sure, would have fixed it already. They want the sales, believe me! It’s just something we’ll have to keep an eye on until their “spider” catches up to the relative popularity of the item (vs. the gazillion of products Amazon sells).

Yes!!!!!!! Adam is at the #1 spot. Also, Amazon pre-order worldwide is indeed a fact. I’m not sure on the numbers for Germany, UK, Finland, but the last time I read the numbers for Japan, he was at #24, and this was on Monday, and I wouldn’t be surprised if his number is even lower (today).

Sony and Comcast have got some deal going about this. With the 5 mins online at Comcast. The two companies have been working out on-demand possibilities — both hardware and licensing — for years. Including a horror movie network on Comcast. Sony opened a retail store with them in Comcast’s Philly headquarters this year. So maybe there is a Comcast wanted to try something aspect to why this roadblock is so early.

True and the itune pass should be factored in. But in regards to the fans getting Adam to #1 that’s awesome that we were able to to that. When Adam’s single hit the radio the non fans who are not overly invested like us /and those who are not aware of him yet will keep him at #1.

I’d actually argue the opposite. I’ll bet there was much panic around the halls of Sony yesterday when the news of the tsunami broke. Had it ended up affecting mutliple nations and become a HUGE story like the Boxing Day tsunami, they likely would have had to pull their roadblock for fear of the backlash.

Cold as it is to say (since dozens or hundreds may have died in Samoa), I think the damage was “contained” enough that they can probably proceed.

Kris’ single is steadily moving up the Itunes chart on it’s own merit ( it really is a good song and perfect fit for Kris), but seeing the three day sales figure of 15,000, you gotta wonder where all his fans that voted for him in the finale went. Physical CD’s and Download markets serve completely different demographics in all things except for fans. Most, I wont say all, hardcore fans – and especially those of Idol – will buy both digital and hard copy. So, I’m not quite buying that argument.

I will grant though, that the Amazon chart rise only indicates that Adam has a dedicated internet fan base both in the US and internationally.

I’m with you, Studio 57, but I think that further supports the point. It would go something like this:

1) iTunes has far more market share than Amazon
2) Kris’ album was available through both outlets
3) Given market share, the majority of Kris’ purchases were driven through iTunes initially.
4) Adam’s album releases to Amazon.
5) Adam fans started buying it — and, those who are also Kradam fans — picked up Kris’ CD while they were there.
6) Therefore, Kris’ rise on Amazon follows Adam, but he may have moved more units overall in iTunes.

Of course, there’s no way to know any of this, it’s just a theory.

Hence why I carefully chose the word “significant” before “other outlets”. Amazon accounts for just a sliver of album sales (I forget the exact percentage, but it’s fairly small). Best Buy and B&N are surely insignificant.

I will concede Sunn’s point, though, that the physical/digital download dimension is hard to think through. Look, I know none of this is “knowable” and those of you who know me understand that I’m not an Adam hater. No flaming from me, I’ve wondered if the pass could have affected the overall numbers. Wouldn’t the iTunes pass include fans who want their music digitally. I would think Amazon sales would be comparable for fans who want “hard copies”.
I’m a “hard copy” cd person myself. I either order from Amazon or go to Target. I was planning on waiting to buy my Adam cd at Target. What would be the advantage of pre-ordering it?

My thinking is, if you want an album, you still may be more likely to purchase it through some place other than itunes, to get the actual physical album. Though itunes of course kills the competition when it comes to pure SINGLES sales. Just a thought that album pre-sale purchases on itunes (e.g. the itunes pass) may not be that significant considering itunes is much more significant as a place to purchase singles, rather than whole albums. Not sure if that makes sense.

That’s right. I just meant that there’s a case to be made that Adam’s surge is unprecedented given the paucity of current promotion. But there’s a counter-case to be made w/r/t Aiken, as you say. Plus, there’s a counter-case to be made because (while Adam has very little publicity this week) he has had relatively huge attention paid to him in general, including the cover of Rolling Stone.

I’m happy folks are happy, truly I am. I’m happy, too. I just don’t want to extrapolate beyond what’s reasonable.

There are many reports of the same thing happening last year with Cook and Archie. Cook went on SNL and performed two songs, his album presale shot up and so did Archies. And their presale tracked together a number of times. But I think that Kris is also getting some sales because of the release of LLWD on Friday.

Aiken RS cover was dated July 10. Which probably means that it came out only shortly before, or even coincident with, his album pre-sales.

I’ll happily concede (if it’s important) that Adam is the first Idol to go to #1 on Amazon without any of the following:

1) A Rolling Stone cover in the same month he launched
2) Any PR during the week before he hit #1
3) His album pre-sales starting shortly after the Idol finale.

It still doesn’t tell us much, peeps. All we can say is “it’s good”.

I’m curious if anyone knows what happened with Ruben’s debut CD. Didn’t he have some health issues which hindered him since winning Idol. Also, I thought he won by an insignificant margin, so it could have gone either way as far as who would become more successful (Ruben vs Clay).

I happen to agree with you on that point and said so yesterday. July 4th was the date so it was about a month after the finale- still riding on the coattails of his loss. Clay fans were so pissed they felt they had to prove something. I don’t feel like that really happened this year. I think Adam fans feel validated for the most part by the press he is getting and aren’t as upset by the loss. And most of us like Kris too. How can you not like him> He’s Sara Lee, lol.

Cooks and Archies presale happened right after the finale, and Archie’s song also came out before the tour was even over, so i can see why their sales were so high. In a nutshell, Ruben’s first song, “Sorry 2004″ ( Yeah, really, there’s a song with longevity, lol) sucked, and so did his album. Hence why I carefully chose the word ‘significant’  before ‘other outlets’ . Amazon accounts for just a sliver of album sales (I forget the exact percentage, but it’s fairly small). Best Buy and B&N are surely insignificant.

I believe Q3 quoted a stat of 18 percent as Amazon’s market share, which is nothing to sneeze at. WalMart, of course, had the largest market percentage of hard CD sales.

Someone else later said Daughtry’s downloads only accounted for 25 percent of his total sales (granted, this is going to depend on the demo ‘“ Miley and Co. probably have more digital downloads), so to extrapolate that out, was Amazon’s 18 percent total hard copy CDs or total of units sold?

Either way, they are not insignificant totals and apparently the digital to hard copy CDs (if the earlier poster’s research holds water, but I remember thinking it well supported when I read it) is not as dramatic as we’ve been led to believe.

Thanks, Studio57. Was Ruben’s CD not good because it was more difficult to write for his R&B genre? I thought Clay’s career was going pretty good for awhile. Didn’t he have a TV special? Also, like many posters here said, you have to get support outside AI bubble, so Clay must have gotten that. I have a feeling he went downhill because he started acting weird (I could be wrong).

It’s still good. A very good thing. Happy for Adam, truly I am.

For what it’s worth, Adam’s album (intriguingly named ‘TBD’ ) has moved from #7 to #5 on the B&N music bestsellers list overnight.

Read through the thread and IMO what moved Adam’s album from nothing to #2 on Amazon was diehard “rabid” fans trolling the internet for anything about him. And then once media attention was drawn, interested but “non-rabid” fans saw the story and moved it to #1.

I think there was a coat tail effect for Kris’s album, with some Kradam buyers and also some die-hard Kris fans not wanting Adam to best their favorite. Nonetheless, so far he’s not been able to break the top 50, and moved down overnight from I think #57 to now #61.

For whatever it’s worth (and I totally get that it’s not any kind of guarantee of any kind of success) this is still a significant achievement for Adam, and portends good things.

And as far as the long-term value of “rabid fans”, I think any wanna-be artist would fall to his/her knees with gratitude to have such a fan base at the beginning of their career. It’s a great place to start, and the rest is up to Adam.

Clay sold 600,000 CD’s in his first week of release. His freshman album soled nearly 2 million in total. If that’s the only precedent, well then Wahaaaay!

But realistically, imo, the Clay comparison bares no relevance to Adam in terms of either sales or fandom size. Adam is playing in an entirely different market landscape with a completely different topography to it. Any resemblance between the two artists is purely for argument’s sake. There is simply no way to predict future sales today, based on Amazon rankings.

I don’t think it was necessarily hard to write for Ruben for his genre, I just feel TPTB felt he wasn’t marketable so they didn’t promote him or Taylor, didn’t give them great producers to work with, etc. Clay had a solid thing going there for awhile but he didn’t continue to put out good product. And although I hate to say it, I think he lost a lot of fans when he came out ONLY because the fans were in such denial about him being gay.

I am actually very excited for Idol now. I think they are getting more and more cred from the music industry as the years go on, thanks to Kelly, Daughtry, and Carrie. I thnk Kris Allen so far has the best single put out by an idol, and I am hoping that Adam tops that. He’s such a loose cannon though, he makes me nervous, lol.

Sunn, ITA- I don’t think you can compare Adam to anyone, he certainly is his own entity. He’s a breakthrough artist, totally unpredictable, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

I couldn’t stand Taylor his year, thought he was a flash in the pan joke, and LOVED Daughtry (had a feeling he would do well) – so that turned out ok. Plus, while I haven’t gotten hugely invested in many other contestants, I tend to gravitate toward those that I see as having a substantial, long career in music. Essentially, I don’t want to get burned following someone who I might personally love, but who doesn’t have much staying power in the industry.

Imo, Adam has all the right ingredients for long term success. I’m firmly of the belief that with his talent and the right team helping him along he will go far. I’m not predicting earth shattering brilliance from the first album, but he has that potential, unlike any other person I’ve seen on the show, to be relevant in the music industry, and reach out far beyond the typical AI bubble.

And I also agree it was very very good for him to have lost No thank you, Disney World and Walmart stakeholder meetings!

I’m confused by this article. Isn’t 25% including single sales? Single sales have to be HUGE on iTunes. What part of the 25% is actual cd sales? That’s the only way to figure out what percentage online retailers account for. Isn’t it?

So, my assumption is (based on the c/net article) that the market segments like this:

65% Physical CDs
25% iTunes downloads (singles and albums combined)
10% Digital downloads not through iTunes.

Mary102, I think with everything that Adam has going for him, he should have a good, long career. He also seems to have a lot of support from 19/RCA, producers, writers and media. What more can one ask.

Amazon has an 18% market share of the US CD Album market and sells a much higher share of presale albums. Here are the estimated current shares of the US CD Album market (based on units sold).

Walmart 29%
Best Buy 22%
Amazon 18%
Target 12%
Others 18%

I think this is only referring to PHYSICAL CDs. (which I THINK is about 80% of the overall music selling market).

I also looked up the Clay stuff yesterday after all the discussion. Clay’s album went for presale on July 4th I believe. Prior to that, he and Reuben appeared on Oprah on June 10th, where they were the only guests for the hour and performed their singles. Clay’s Rolling Stone cover hit the newstands between June 26-30th, with an issue date of July 10th. The AI tour began on July 8th, so nice synergy with the presale. Kind of a different situation than Adam’s, but doesn’t make it less amazing.

I’ll be honest, should Adam sell 1/3 of Clay’s 613,000 first week sales, I will be ecstatic. I really don’t see a ton of “ZOMG!!! This means Adam will be the best selling singer EVAH!!” from Adam fans on this blog. I see that generalization made about Adam fans from others, but not really from fans.

On another note, re MJ’s tweet about Kris winning if he gets the outside the bubble sales,…Ummm..isn’t that true for all of them??

Thanks Sunn. I am not interested, at all, in any of the other idols (from this year or previous). I am interested in Adam ´s career and I am enjoying the ride day by day. I am no fortune teller, so I am not making predictions. I just see a fenomenal singer (I had not been interested in a singer for many years), who is starting his career in a great way and I am following it. So, for me, comparisons are insubstantial

Tiger92, I’m not sure what to make of Q3′s numbers. The comment at the end (CD’s with an 80% share) makes me wonder if it might be 2008 data? The c/net article to which I linked indicated growth in digital downloads of 15-20% a year (with a corresponding decline in physical CDs) so 80% would be about right for a year ago.

Of course, journalists (even c/net journalists) sometimes get things wrong. But without knowing Q3′s source it’s hard to dig deeper.

So at 2:30 a.m. today amazon finally sent me a notification saying that Adam’s album was available for preorder. No duh! :/

I understand what dyg1 is saying. I, also, am not interested in any other idol, although I wish them the best, just Adam. I am an Adam fan, not a general idol fan.

From the information Q3 gave , you can deduce as to which distributor (Amazon, Walmart etc) holds the bigger share of the pie on the 65% of CD market. iTunes has the hold over the digital downloads.

Clay is getting a lot of publicity on this blog – I confess I bought his debut CD just because I liked him on Idol (in those days I stayed away from the internet and consequently knew nothing about fan wars). My purchase of Clay’s CD was my first and last purchase of an AI contestant’s CD. I later gave it to the Salvation Army, sorry Clay, but that’s the truth.

Although I have watched Idol every season, it was only when doing a google search of Adam that this blog turned up on my computer screen (mid or toward the end of the AI season) and I became somewhat obsessed but have refrained from flailing and squeeing (pretty much).

Now that I have a home computer I mostly download singles or greatest hits compilations (although I did spring for the Beatles boxed set which should arrive any day now) – but I will buy Adam’s entire CD. New material, cover, any style, the boy can sing and interpret the hell out of anything IMHO. As for the other Idols from this season, I’m sure I will purchase some singles, but not CDs.

What is it that fans want from Adam Lambert? Is “winning” the statistical spread sheets the important factor in determining if Adam is successful? Is he a failure if other Idols did and do outsell him on his singles and album releases? Is it vitally important that he be the best Idol ever in order for his fans to keep following him…if he falls short will the fandom disappear, or will his fans be the Boston Red Sox of the music industry and continue to cheer him on no matter the results of any given season?

Right now, Adam really has a pretty clear slate upon which to write his history. It isn’t a check list with headings that he needs to “beat” in order to get a good score. Has it been important in the past for every new group to outscore the Beatles to be successful…and I would say: EMPHATICALLY NO!

It’s super fun to witness the good things that are happening for Adam. It’s nice to see him top established stars, if even for a single day, and to get some good media hype during the process. But will this make him the next “super star”? How the hell do we know…only time will answer that question. Also, all the peripheral stuff that fans consider so important may not, in truth, even be a consideration when Adam’s career is evaluated in the coming years. Neil Diamond never had a number one single but he sold countless albums and his tours still sell out 30 years after his initial presence on the music scene.

I’m just along for the ride, enjoying each little tidbit as it comes out. I don’t care what Adam is doing in relation to any other idol…I just want him to have a career so that I can keep listening to his beautiful voice and enjoy his mesmerizing eyes and his happy smile. And, I’m going to be real patient….that’s been the key for Jennifer Hudson fans (who might be one of the best known “idols” outside of the bubble). Instant success doesn’t always guarantee long term stamina.

Delurking for the first time to just say “Yay” for Adam and those of us who wish him the success he deserves.

I have been an avid MJ reader since Adam and appreciate the viewpoints of all posters (although not avid enough to know what “black swan” is – feel free to humor me if it is on topic).

Realize that being #1 on Amazon might not mean total music industry world domination but it is enough to make me happy and delurk.

I’ve predicted this before, and I’m still predicting at least one restricted lyric song on this CD that the radio stations can’t play “as is.”

It’ll play into the bad boy reputation, get him lots of press, and it’ll probably sound fabulous!!

As an aside, can someone explain exactly what a songwriter like Aimee Mayo does?

I don’t know anything about the music industry, but does a songwriter like Aimee Mayo just write lyrics, or is she also writing the music to go with the lyrics, and what does the producer do in all of this?

No doubt the answer is “it depends”, but I’ve been wondering about all these songwriting sessions and what happens there.

Any insight peeps??

I think it stopped being about winning for mostly everyone addicted to this show after Daughtry. I seriously don’t care anymore. Last year 3 of the top 4 were signed to major labels. And then this year the top 4 get signed? Means even less now.

I thnk I will always be addicted to this show though. It’s fun being Wednesday morning quarterback in the music industry. I can’t see how anyone who loves music can’t be addicted to this show. And if this is the year a star really is born? Icing on the cake.
