I liked the interview. Randy came across as really liking Adam and some of his music. I know from reading an earlier article that he gave, that he wish it was more rock than pop. I liked the advice Adam gave to the new crop of Idols to be real and try to stand out from he rest. I agree with Randy’s daughter, love whataya want from me.

I liked the Randy interview with Adam, and I really don’t see a contradiction with his previous opinion about the Idol girls’ albums being stronger than the guys’ albums. He’s not saying here that he thinks Adam’s album is the greatest thing to come out of Idol, just that he likes it and particularly a couple songs. Way back when Adam was on Idol, Randy said a couple times at least that, in his opinion, Adam should be making rock records. During this interview, he said his very favorite song was “Music Again,” which definitely has a rock vibe.

My problem wasn’t what Randy said before to MTV, because he’s entitled to his opinion (although I didn’t agree with him at all), but that it was really rude timing, considering both Kris and Adam had just recently released their albums. I just thought that it was rather unprofessional of Randy, seeing that he’s employed by the same people Kris and Adam are, to make a negative press statement about them just as they’re trying to pedal their albums and expand their fan bases.

I think maybe Randy like some Idol fans expected too much from Adam & even maybe expected him to go “Rock” (as was evident during the Rock God proclamation on Idol). Maybe Adam would have done better with “Rock”, but then again, maybe “Not”. Who knows? All we know is that Adam did what he wanted to do. He himself has said he was torn between doing “what he is really good at” and “what he loves to listen to”. He did not have much time between Idol and putting out an Album, and as has been said before, the music industry is not what it was in 2000. So let’s all give this boy a chance and support him….
On another note, that was very puzzling about Randy’s remarks and comparisons between Adam & Kris and the others at the MTV interview.

Bottom line – Randy talks too much. In the Kris interview Kris hardly got to speak at all. Adam at least managed to talk a bit. I never realized until now what a huge ego Randy must have.

One clear disadvantage of 19E trying hard to release albums in the late fall to catch Christmas sales is that such is not a good time to look for Grammy consideration, as they aren’t eligible until the following year’s awards as the deadline is typically late summer (it was August 31, 2009 for this year’s awards). For instance, the Season 9 people won’t be eligible for Grammys until 2012.

That plays well into the hands of non-19E acts, and second and subsequent albums though, since those often tend to be released in the spring and summer.

Just listened to the vid with Randy – OMG, Randy, what a kiss ass! When Adam’s in the room, sure, that’s what he says…ugh.

But Adam was so great in that interview – and great advice for the S9 contestants, imo – standout, but in a believable, true-to-self way. That’s exactly what he, and so many other successful artists out there, do so well.

He just exudes so much confidence and ease in these moments – he truly was born for this!

I totally agree with you. Most of the time he is much better than the person doing the interview. They seem to stumble around and then he helps them out with some smooth patter. Our “hero” can do anything!!!

Totally agree re the Grammys. I only watched the AMAs (for the first time ever) because of Adam – and after watching it, I realized why. I loved him and I loved Gaga, and everything else was boring and/or mediocre.

The Grammys – eh, I want to see Gaga, so luckily she’s openning, then I’ll either turn it off or have it on in the background while I multi-task.

It would be AMAZING if Adam got some Grammy love next year. IDK – if he stays in the spotlight he could definitely do it. Some hit songs will definitely help too. Some of the songs are really really strong on the album.

ETA: And I especially hope he gets some award love as a vocalist – like best male vocalist awards – because, seriously, can ANYONE in music today actually match his vocals? I mean, he has his off days, for sure, but when he is on, he is pretty much untouchable for how versatile and far-reaching those vocals are. To belt out a glam rock number with the same ease that he can sing a song like Broken Open – just unreal.

That’s right! Thought that was very cool that Simon Fuller was there – especially since the party in general skewed much younger – as in, just a lot of Adam’s 20-something friends.

Little blond – lol, do you mean Alexis? That is great. And Matt would probably be there too if it wasn’t for the concert in Grand Rapids. I think Adam loved a lot of the peeps from S8 – and they seemed to really like him back – he’s just very personable and quick to pick up friends like that. Was Michael there? I guess he and Danny are mainly stationed in Nashville now.

Oh, wow – that was like EPIC Adam/Anoop hug! You know, rewatching S8 recently, I noticed Anoop often seemed surprisingly close to Adam – at one point during one of his bottom 3 trips, Anoop and Adam shared a nice hug, and Anoop completely skipped over pretty much everyone else. And I know Anoop liked Adam on tour – because he was quiet – lol.

Okay, of course I didn’t mean that Randy is single-handedly or the most responsible for the show running over. But I do think the dynamic of this interview is somewhat symbolic of the judge/contestant imbalance on the show itself. Randy is there to interview Adam, but he pulls the focus away from him and onto himself. And despite the loquaciousness, he’s extremely inarticulate, which is his biggest problem.

Adam did say he and Anoop had some great life discussions.

I saw Anoop , Danielle Stori, Lisa from the band & Tommy….but didn’t see Kris, Megan and Allison. Where were they….I believe some commented they saw them. I saw Simon Fuller from AI,Lindsey Lohan and Sam Ronson, but none of the others. This must have been towards the end if the party. Wonder if Leila was there? I hope Adam had a great time. He is so affectionate with his friends. No wonder he has so many of them.

Me too! In fact, it’s because of that range and versatility that I love him so much! He always keeps it interesting, to go from those extremes! He truly embodies the mood of any song he’s doing so beautiful!

It’s kind of funny, but I truly like all of Adam’s outfits. In my opinion, he has such a great sense of style and what works for him. Looking back, the only “getup” I was not in favor of was the one he wore for the Young Hollywood Awards. I thought that was a definite no. As I think back, I am not able to come up with another “disaster” occasion. To me, he always looks HOT, no matter what he wears! YMMV

Randy has to ‘spell it out ‘ better for Adam-yes, ‘Music Again’ kinda retro Rock and Roll-what we all expected, what the ‘most anticipated album of the year’ was supposed to be- BUT we all got ,ha, electro-pop, not Rock and Roll, not all those guitar & drum but with a fantasic ‘front man’ a singer with Adam Lambert’s vocals- can you just imagine ACDC with Adam singing, alsl those great Rock and Roll songs from the 60s,70’80s with Adam’s vocal ! wow! hello, I love Adam, and I support his CD-but eletro -pop can be sung by anyone, anyone, and his magnifient talent is wasted on those songs.He could have put a couple ballads in there-they all did- for the variety- again, showcasing his vocals. Randy ‘told’ him he liked ‘Music Again”-hope Adam got the message.

Why does Adam Have to do AC/DC just because some fans like that? Sure Fire Winners sounds more rock to me than Music Again. They are my favorite songs but I also love the dance songs. He sings a song for each of my moods, which is why I love his CD so much!

Adam doesn’t need to sing what the friggin AI fan base thinks he should or a used up has been bass player extoles. Adam should sing what he wants…it’s his dime and his career and if it goes bottom up then Adam has only himself to blame. The last thing I would want for Adam is for him to be as unhappy with his “albums” as Kelly always seems to be..that poor girl just can’t convince anyone, even herself, that singing what she wants is more important than a few more steers for her ranch (or whatever she does on her Texas spread).

Odd, most of my favorite albums are by artists that tend to be eclectic. And to be honest, Adam’s wasn’t that much so. No matter whether the song was; rock, pop or ambient, there is always a synth undertone.

Hell, Duran Duran’s Medazzaland felt more all over the place than For Your Entertainment. Honestly, how is his album format any different than a lot of the 70′s and 80′s pop albums? Seems to me, this trend of narrowly focused albums is a leftover of the late 90′s/early 00′s.

As for making an album to please a small group of AI watchers, I believe Adam himself has stated that he’d rather go down in flames doing what he wants to do, than be a megahit star doing stuff he doesn’t. And to me, that is how it should be.

I recall Adam explaining that he can’t just do “classic rock” because it’s classic; ie it’s part of the past, not part of the future. Whatever Adam does in the future, he’s going to be pushing the boundaries of current rock/pop. Adam doesn’t like genres; I think that he’s trying to create a new sound that incorporates elements of many styles. I’m excited to see what he comes up with.

As for the notion that Adam is wasting his voice on this album, well, I think Adam was REALLY wasting his voice when he was toiling as an understudy in Wicked and performing in a sleazy musical in Tahoe! He is not, by any measure, wasting his voice.

Sweeettt! It’s been doing really well on itunes lately – I think with the mv out, plus the radio play now reaching the point where enough people hear it enough to want to buy it. It is a great song – very catchy, moody, sexy (because it’s Adam – lol)

The idea that Adam is wasting his voice on the album is ludicrous. If he was singing songs that all sounded like Kesha and Gaga’s album – then, yes, he would be wasting his voice (no offense to them, and they have insanely catchy songs, but no real vocal challenge among such catchy ditties as Tik Tok – beyond a lot of autotune imo).

So yeah, after listening to those “let loose” moments in songs like the bridge of PUU, or WWFM’s climax, or the high notes that come out of nowhere in Music Again – no way is he wasting his voice on those songs – because those songs perfectly showcase his amazing range and ability, imo.

It was interesting in one of Adam’s interviews that he was talking about his own wail and reaching for the glory notes. He said that he purposely tried not to go OTT on the album because he felt he didn’t have to. He said that he did on AI because you only had 2 minutes each week to make yourself stand out from the crowd so he went for his killer notes…but I think he really understands that you don’t always have to do that.

It’s interesting when he performs a single song (like on TV) that he will go there even if the song is different on the album. He knows that this little “trick” thrills many listeners but would get old if he did it on the album where peeps are listening over and over. The guy is pretty smart about how best to use his instrument.

According to Monte’s Tweets, Adam is the only one who likes Citizen Vein, the rest want to re-name it.

Yeah, I guess I’m in the camp of: Adam did KILL it rock-wise on idol (WLL was just all kinds of goodness – and it only got better and better on tour and of course at Gridlock.) And I love rock in general (especially classic rock of the Led Zep variety ) so this idea would be a-ok with me!

My big problem with Adam going the 100% rock route is that, sadly, rock is just not in a very healthy state right now. It only does really well in very isolated instances on the charts, and most of the charts are dominated by other, more pop-ish music.

When did he say all that? He didn’t. Today he said they were talking about doing a harmony solo, he and Adam. Someone asked if he’d be up for a Vein reunion when he mentioned having the old demo tape out.. that was all. I think you’re talking about when they started the band not now. They each had their solo work and the band was occasional. He wasn’t talking about present day. And he didn’t say anything about putting out any new rock album.

Yes, mttp, I was very touched by that as well. She has basically embraced Adam as a full-fledged member of her family. The framed pictures on the wall and the way she spoke to him so lovingly just said it all.

I was trying to read back through Monte’s tweets and didn’t get any of that. Just that did didn’t think RCA would back the demos being released now. And he’d rather re-record them. and old stuff about meeting Adam through Zodiac, etc.

I was so impressed by the Isabella video as I’m one of his older fans, but she has me by 10 years. She’s alot sweeter than I am and my husband would not have Adam’s pictures on the wall. (I wouldn’t mind) but I have lots on my computer. She’s so nice the Internet might not be the place for her cause as much fun as it is, there are lots of negativity that takes time to get used too. I’m here everyday, downloaded all his songs and album on I-Tunes and bought the pysical album. I downloaded all his AI performances on the computer and then also bought them in a dvd from IdolJunkie.com. If he comes anywhere close I’ll go to see him. And lots of older fans didn’t find his AMA performance obsene, just over produced and poor sound. I find it easy to love Adam at any age.

I’m with you, I read through Monte’s twitter feed and I think people are reading more into it than what was there. What I saw was more about nostalgia than concrete future plans. Adam is in the touchy process of branding himself with the non-Idol public, and while I could maybe see a song or two from his Citizen Vein era being included in his tour set, I think it’ll be a while before he has the freedom to do anything but promote his current album. IMO doing something with his CV work would just confuse his artistic branding.

You know what, age is a number and we are all going to be a certain age someday! And those of us who are older used to be younger and we are the same people, right??? I think Adam is lucky to have a large older fan base. Unlike young teenagers who get bored easily and often quickly move on to the next artists, older fans stick around longer with their idols. Adam will have a long lasting career.

I think Adam has a lot of older fans. But I went to two AI concerts, and believe me, he has a lot of younger fans too. Young or old, I think Adam fans see something special and unique in him. I was happy when Randy Jackson mentioned Adam’s charisma. He’s definitely got that!

Plenty of pop stars have a loyal fanbase. Beyonce, Britney (there were people who stuck by her even through her meltdown), Justin (still has a fanbase despite being off the scene for a long time), Taylor Swift has a pretty loyal (and large) fanbase that I suspect will last for many years, even groups like the Backstreet Boys retained a fanbase even after their music started going downhill. There are super loyal fanbases in rap too, Eminem and Jay Z in particular have had pretty loyal fanbases. And I’m just picking out some of the most high profile people.

I just read the 80% of the viewer who watched the ’09 finale -were 35yrs and older. That is one reason the electro -pop album isn’t as big a hit as a traditional Rock&Roll album would have been. Look at the sales of Susan Boyle and Michael Buble albums- ballads-David Cook sold platinum in 3 months.Daughtry got a grammy. They stayed to their genre on Idol.Adam is a better singer- and his AI fan base of millions were ready for Rock and Roll like on the show.If it weren’t for the anticipation of a Rock and Roll CD from a glam rock star, it would have been fine.but to expect R&R and get that electro pop is a disappointment. Should have done electro pop on AI – and stuck w it or stayed to the image/genre of Rock he gave us on AI. my opinion. I still like him, but that’s because I know he can sing. & I like him period.

I don’t get that.

AI fans aren’t enough to make a career off of. As it is, Adam didn’t do all rock on AI, he did plenty of other genres. Besides, it’s a bit hard for a new artist to brand themselves on a show that specializes in decades old music. Unless one is going for country or ez listening, which really haven’t changed much in several decades.

Yep. Tru dat. It was the likes of Kara and Randy who kept hammering in the idea: ROCK ALBUM ROCK ALBUM. While Adam just seemed to give a “hmm. ok” non-answer, because it was never his intention to go 100% rock.

IMO, what was mentioned above as the disconnect between an AI audience of (mostly) over 35 year-olds and the kind of music that Adam and Kris came out with is more the issue – the AI audience now skews even older than before, and with Adam and Kris turning out much more youth-oriented albums, imo, that’s where you have the disconnect.

There is some Rock on his album. WWFM, Aftermath, Sleepwalker, and even Sure Fire Winners has some blistering guitar work. A more 80′s style rock sound but it’s still rock n roll. Adam said his album was going to mix a bunch of styles.

This is one of the problems with AI. The show is all about youngsters performing songs from decades ago – songs that the audience knows and usually loves. The fans fall in love with them singing classic songs, and then when they release genre-specific contemporary albums, America just couldn’t care less.

People raved about Fantasia singing Summertime, for example. But then she released a modern R & B album and lost her audience.

That’s also one reason that AI audience skews older. It’s not so much about giving the contestants a viable launching pad for a current music careers but about who best performs songs from 2 generations ago.

Adam has mentioned a few times that he doesn’t want to sing “classic rock” because it’s been done in the 70s. It’s called classic for a reason he said. He loves the genre but wants to do something with a contemporary twist.

Ok curiosity got the best of me… what is Harmony Solo? Guitar and singer?

He means he and Adam singing harmony together for the entire song out front instead of him being a backup vocal. Since Monte actually wants to be/is a singer songwriter too. Right now he did some backup vocals with Lisa on FYE, Music Again and WWFM on tv. I remember him saying Letterman’s freezing studio made his voice quiver it wasn’t vibrato. I think his voice blends well with Adam’s although it was his vocal that was primarily so out of tune at the AMA’s unfortunately. I don’t think he could hear that night.
