Adam Lambert talks Paula Abdul, Michael Jackson, the upcoming album and his performance at next month’s American Music Awards with Laura Saltman of Access Hollywood. The interview took place after Adam announced the AMA nominations with Paula Abdul and Snoop Dogg.

He also addresses a couple of persistent rumors:   So far there’s no confirmation that Adam will either be appearing on Saturday Night Live, or touring with Lady Gaga

Adam describes his upcoming album as a pop album where “old meets new”.   The melodic and vocal stylings will be reminiscent of 70′s classic rock and glam rock, he says, but produced in a way that’s very modern.   He can’t wait to stage a live performance of his new single on the American Music Awards, where he is set to perform.

And as Adam told Ryan Seacrest on the Idol host’s radio show yesterday, the lead single from the album hasn’t been chosen yet…

Also, Laura hints that she’s got more news that’s embargoed until Tuesday, so stay tuned.

As if performing on the AMA’s and having his music video for “Time For Miracles” debut with the Michael Jackson documentary, This is It, isn’t enough news for one news cycle..

Bonus Tidbit:   Last night, Adam tweeted news of a new collaboration, “Workin w Howard Benson tonight!!!! This album is gonna be Siiiiiiiiiiiick“.

Howard Benson produced both albums by Daughtry.   Add Benson to the list of collabs that include, Rob Cavallo, RedOne, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly.

UPDATE: New tweet from Adam, “Thanks to @ali22san and @ohferras for coming to the studio and lending their voices to the song we wrote together!!”

    Adam gives good interview.

Did he say he had written (not co-written) tracks for his upcoming album? Oh my gosh, Adam is a singer/songwriter/performer!

    I like this part:

I would be shocked if Adam had a single tune on his album for which he received sole writing credit. Just not gonna happen.

I don’t know if it is news or a surprise for Adam.

Adam and Laura are so sweet together. He always gives her a big, affectionate hug.

Twitter followers are not evidence of anything. Some very lame people have loads of followers. While Brandy may have been bumped from the “A” list long ago, she has farm more, documented success than Adam.

    aa618892,

I so agree with you, so hard to concentrate on the interview when the eyes are enhanced by the awesome colored shirt!!!

And to bring up a sore subject to some, has Adam had some skin treatments since he has been locked in the studio recording, cause his skin looks so awesome?

Maybe someone who has seen him in person recently can weigh in to say whether this is just a tv/photo appearance or whether it is apparent in person as well…

  • Dallas

Wonder why she made the comment that his album needed to play to the AI audience. (paraphrasing.) That is really a strange comment IMO since Adam is obviously trying to go way outside the AI audience and particularly since the “AI audience” did not put him in the winner’s seat…(meaning the majority voters may not have liked his style, music, whatever.)

Am I just interpreting this wrong?

Also, I am trying to think of the last song I heard that made me laugh. LOL

  • Susan M.

That interview is adorable as usual. Adam knows from him fangirl entertainment reporter base and I love their rapport.

Dying to know what the embargoed information is. Amazing, his PR people must have had a spread sheet with all of the information they planned to divulge throughout the day and doled it out accordingly.

    Ryan: AMA announcement
    MTV: TFM running with TII
    Laura: ??? (embargoed until Tuesday)

Too bad Lyndsey was in New York, but it sounded like RCA gave Cavallo license to speak freely.

    Where’s EW’s scoop?

  • sidewalkstory

If you’ve ever followed Ely, you will see that all he talks about is sex, and not in a romantic way. I stopped following him a while back. The constant boner talk and relief wasn’t so funny after awhile.

  • Squirrely

And to bring up a sore subject to some, has Adam had some skin treatments since he has been locked in the studio recording, cause his skin looks so awesome?

The Bare Minerals make-up he’s been using is very good for the skin. I’ve been using it and have noticed a big difference as well. I’m sure he’s probably had few facials as well, but yes his skin looks great.

Good observation. That was kind of a faux pas on Laura’s part. You have to expand yourself out of the idol bubble to be successful. It seems Adam has been pretty successful doing just that.

Yesterday’s news was great and all, but now I am right back to square one with just wanting to hear some damn music. All the squeeing and flailing in the world will be for naught if the music sucks.

From what he said about not even knowing the first single, well, it doesn’t give me very high hopes that it’s coming this week anytime. How can they really not know which one they want to release?

dyg- Brandy is an R&B singer, mostly remembered for her duet with Monica on the song The Boy Is Mine. She also has done some acting and her brother was in the reality show For The Love Of Ray J.

Adam wanted to come off as a rock god on AI and after establishing a fan base that was expecting one thing, he is now changing it a bit. To some fans (not me), that may matter. Lindsay Parker said the same thing to Cavallo yesterday. It’s a valid point.

Also, I am trying to think of the last song I heard that made me laugh. LOL

That is sort of an odd way to describe a song, isn’t it? Hmmm, I think the last one that made me laugh was Gaga’s Love Game. When I first heard the “I wanna take a ride on your discostick” line I cracked the hell up.

That would be awesome if Adam had a song with a couple of LOLworthy lyrics. Actually, now that I think about it, his past songwriting has had some (intentional? unintentional?) laugh lines, I think “bendy bendy, bangy bangy, lose your mind on all my candy” may take the prize.

I understand the AI fanbase hoping for some rock, but the way she worded the question seemed awkward like he was expected to put out an album based on AI (kinda like those were the only folks who are going to buy or who know about him.)

I discovered him through AI but I SO want the day to come where his name and AI are not mentioned in the same sentence.

The way Lyndsey phrased it was (paraphrasing) “aren’t you afraid some of your AI fans are going to be disappointed that it’s not rock like AI” which is valid. I’ve said the same thing. Some will be.

  • Studio57

The only obvious answer is that every song is so f*kin’ great that they cannot make up their collective minds. Good answer?

Maybe….Heavy on the maybe….they both asked this question to help dispel any questions that Adam is being forced to make an “AI” generic album. Because honestly we will be getting the Adam we got on AI.

    1) Have know idea what he will come up with but excited to hear it none the less.

    2) There will be the rock edge.

    3) there will be amazing vocals

    4) Eclectic-not really pigeonholed into any one special type. (on the show we had Mad World Adam, WLL Adam, Felling Good Adam, Change is gonna come Adam)

So I see the question as more of an affirmation that Adam’s Album will be him and not some reinvented safe version to appeal to those who did not vote for him.

Do you think he actually wanted to come off as a rock god?? I mean, to me, rewatching those episodes, when Kara and Randy were saying those things, he looked a bit embarrassed. I also think he didn’t just stick to a rock god style on the show. Tracks of my tears, Ring of Fire, Play that Funky Music and especially Mad World were definitely not Rock God territory. I think Adam wanted to come off as a diverse artist, which IMO, he did.

Moved from headline thread — haven’t read this thread yet so it is out of context:

Regarding Laura’s Interview with Adam. She pre-promoed that she has a surprise for Adam. She said at the end of the video that it can’t be shown online until Tuesday because it is embargoed.

My interpretation is that Laura has information about something related to Adam from another source that is embargoed (can’t be revealed by the press) until Tuesday 10/20/09. She wanted to interview Adam about it but she would not be able to reveal it until 10/10/09.

I do not believe that she messed up the date.

I don’t think it has to do with the release of TfM — Adam said the release date is 10/18/09 in three interviews yesterday; Rob Cavallo said the same release date. But I wonder is there is something special happening on Sunday that ties into 2012/TfM or if they will just release it. My bet is that there will be a 2012 related promotion.

  • http://www.twitter.com/halfie6 halfie

Q3, I agree with you, but still think it has something to do with TfM. She may be surprising him by serenading him, doing a dramatic (Shatneresque) reading of the lyrics, a song parody, you name it. Maybe she has outtakes from the video shoot or something.

the only thing guaranteed with adam’s album is amazing vocals…thats it. artists always claim that their work will be of a certain exciting genre…something new, something all people will like. riiiiiiiiiight. everyone says the same shyt every year. and the end result is hardly ever mindblowing.

ITA, CindyM. I think Adam went with “Satisfaction” with his Top 36 performance because he saw there was a shortage of rocker types and he knew that was a niche he could nail (well, all of them are niches he could nail). I think it was all part of the strategy and the strategy was to show his diversity.

I really don’t get when people ask him about “how are people going to react to your non-AI sound?” Well his AI sound was totally diverse, so what is anyone anticipating other than insane vocals that can do any style, any genre?

Today they were talking about him on Mark & Brian, widely syndicated morning radio program that generally runs on rock or classic rock stations, and despite a few lame gay jokes from Brian, they were going on about how unbelievably talented they think his is.

Then someone chimed in that they heard a woman recently remark that Adam was so ridiculously attractive that he was almost uninteresting looking to her (she must like herself some freak shows ‘“ j/k).

  • Q3

This interview is giving me great hope that I will not be disappointed with this album! I love how Adam responds to the question around 2:50 about do you kind of have to be a little careful with his album because you are playing to that Idol audience:

I’m not really — the thing is I don’t really do anything by being careful. I like to take risks, I like to kind of go out there. I feel like if I was being cautious or careful, I wouldn’t be being myself. So — I don’t fell like I’ve had to edit myself or hold back at all on this actually.

It’s been really, really exciting. The team, my team at RCA have been “Like what kind of music do you to make man? Like what to you want to do? So from the getgo they have been really supportive on my vision. And I think we’ve done a really good job of following that.

Note: above quote may not be perfect — but it’s close!

halfie: Q3, I agree with you, but still think it has something to do with TfM. She may be surprising him by serenading him, doing a dramatic (Shatneresque) reading of the lyrics, a song parody, you name it. Maybe she has outtakes from the video shoot or something.

Like Ryan Seacrest reading Twillight New Moon on air. LOL! I hope not!
But I would love a Shatner-Lambert duet! That would be classic.

In all seriousness, there is supposed to be another Adam announcement on 10/20/09. So something else is up. He is already in the two big Sony Pictures properties. So who knows. And I think something must be planned for the TfM release on or before Sunday 10/18/09.

Whatever it was, it was ‘presented’ to Adam yesterday, so the press and photographers must know something too. How can something not leak?

Nothing that is specifically embargoed will leak from a reporter — if it does, then all of Sony and 19 and probably the whole industry would freeze out that reporter.

The few leaks we’ve had have come from people who are not press and not working on the album or it’s promotion — Brian May on 2012 song, the make-up artist “friend” of Adam’s who was at the cover shoot, or totally planned as teasers — Elle mag teasers.

The MTV News article is great! And so the Michelin Man photo is really on the CD. Can’t wait to see this cover!! From the MTV article.

Adam Lambert’s “space, pop, rock, glam alien invasion” (also known as his still-untitled major-label debut) will land on planet Earth on November 24.

That’s our glittery alien they’re talking about!

YMMV but from the very beginning he positioned himself as a rocker (the song the producers choose to show for his audition was BR after all).
PTFM was full of rock waill reminiscent of 70′s and 80′s hair bands something that all his critics emphasized calling it a “screech” and ROF was an arrangement he borrowed from Dilana who performed it on Rockstar Supernova.

TomT and Mad World are ballads, every rock band has a more subdued set of songs, look at Beth for Kiss or Patience for G&R, Queen had a whole set of acoustic songs during their concert where Freddie played the acoustic guitar.

We’ll see how the public will react to a pop version of Adam, I think it’s smart that they try to emphasize the rock influences by recording with producers like Cavallo and Benson.

Crap, I can’t really watch again at work.

  • Susan M.

YMMV but from the very beginning he positioned himself as a rocker (the song the producers choose to show for his audition was BR after all).

That was how it was edited. He actually sang “Rock With You,” by Michael Jackson before BoRap.

ETA: So the question is did HE position himself or did the producers? I still think it was all part of the strategy. He assessed what areas were lacking and played to those particular skills. He also knew he could do an impressive rock wail, which is not at all easy to do.

  • http://www.twitter.com/halfie6 halfie

Whatever it was, it was ‘presented’ to Adam yesterday, so the press and photographers must know something too. How can something not leak?

Nothing that is specifically embargoed will leak from a reporter ‘” if it does, then all of Sony and 19 and probably the whole industry would freeze out that reporter.

This is exactly why I don’t think Saltman’s 10/20 “news” is really going to be news. There seemed to be a ton of people in that room, not all of whom were reporters. I don’t think Adam’s people would have trusted her talking about embargoed news in a semi-public setting like that.

  • BestAI

I guess that’s possible. Maybe it’s related to Oprah (although I’m sure Adam is aware of Oprah, if it’s happening)?

From an interview shortly after AI was over, a reporter asked if Adam was getting offers to do different things. He said yes, here and there, but he has people handling all that. He may not know all that is being offered until they are finalized. He may know that the Oprah thing is on the table, but nothing scheduled yet (unless it has to do with 2012). Thus, his vague response regarding SNL.

  • anthrogeek

Did you answer your own question? Because it’s pretty clear in his LA Times interview that he choose to position himself as a rocker.

My impression from the RS interview is that he positioned himself as the “boy rocker” to cut thru the clutter of the Top 36, and it was not meant to be his strategy for the entire season, and indeed, it wasn’t. He drew from pop music history as much as he did from rock. It’s all moot now, anyway, as the only thing that matters going forward is his own forthcoming CD and its contents.

    RE: Embargoed news

My money is on the album cover. Her “clue” via Twitter was her showing Adam a piece of paper or a photo.

  • spinastory

Well he did say the album cover pic’s where done didn’t he.. and she talked about the michelen man didn’t she.. maybe there is a connection? I am to lazy to go back and look.. but maybe its album cover related.

  • Susan M.

Did you answer your own question? Because it’s pretty clear in his LA Times interview that he choose to position himself as a rocker.

Sort of, but my original point was his ultimate goal was to show his diversity, which means he isn’t locked into any one particular genre. I see the “rocker” positioning as a jumping off point, not the sum total of his performances at all.

As indicated in the L.A. Times article (though it’s been awhile since I read it), it goes back to strategy ‘“ he understood the concept of archetypes and they’re relevance early in the competition. He chose to go with that strength because it was underrepresented in the group. If there were Bo, Daughtry and Cook were in his Top 36, I’m sure he would have chose differently.

Curious to know what song he choose to perform that you consider “pop” (when he wasn’t confined by the theme of the night), but you’re right that it’s all water under the bridge at this point.

Wow, MTV has joined the ‘kissing’ fray:

    http://newsroom.mtv.com/2009/10/14/spotted-adam-lambert-kiss/

Love this article, quite well written surprisingly.

Adam will be having album art which for me confirms a Deluxe version and, I would bet my last penny, an ITunes LP format. I’m so looking forward to the concept, the album is sounding more and more like it may have a well thought out arc going through the art and the music. Something that I don’t think any Idol has had before based on what I’ve seen and heard.

It finding the combination of album info permeating through the recent Cavallo, Saltzman, and MTV features very exciting.
I’m loving every minute, of this ride.

As to the Tuesday surprise, I’m leaning towards Q3′s theory of a presentation of the album cover perhaps, mostly because that’s what I want it to be.

  • Winks8

My imagination brain cells must not be working very well today because I can’t imagine a scenario in which that Michelin Man suit would look good — sexy — interesting ??? I just want it to go away and now I hear it may be included in the album art.

The only thing I’m hanging on to is nobody wants him to look goofy on this album cover… so he/they must know what they’re doing. *praying*

Also, my vote on the Lara S “surprise.” I think it’s going to be a not very newsworthy, silly bit of fun!

I forget the exact wording but Laura said that it was a ‘couldn’t be shown online’ kinda thing. Can’t figure out how that might be a hint but it struck me as being a bit odd. Perhaps we’ll find out whatever it is, before Tuesday, but ‘on air’. Are we supposed to be given something in the next couple of days; something that they would know about now … that they can’t talk about until later? Just thinking out loud here.

I was eavesdropping on one interview and she must have asked him about his living situation. He mentioned that he had a place and that it had lots of guest rooms for his friends and family to visit. He basically he was pretty much settled in (meaning he got a place. Not 100% sure but it sounded like he’s already bought a home).

My OTHER question I managed to get out was how many songs did HE co-write and with who. He said he co-wrote about 6 or 7. He wrote with Kara Dioguardi and he’s written a LOT with Greg Wells (who he’s been working with the past few days (out of like 24 or so).

He also said he has about another week of recording. And that after that, once they get all the masters then he and the label will get together and listen to what they’ve got and start picking songs.

I think the reason there seems to be a difference in the SNL question versus the Lady Gaga tour question is that he was asked about the Gaga tour rumor on Ryans show earlier so he was prepared with that answer but listening to his answer on Ryan’s show he sounds just as …reflective as he does when he answers the SNL question in Saltmans interview.

Laura said the last portion of the interview couldn’t be released because it was embargoed until Tuesday. That says to me that it is date sensitive info — which could be:

    1. A magazine related item. Could it be about a magazine cover? Possibly US magazine – or EW?

    2. A media event — possibly something to do with NBC which produces Access Hollywood.

    3. Something to do with Adam’s album or 2012 TfM promotion that his PR folks gave to Laura so Access Hollywood would get an exclusive — but embargoed it until 10/20/09.

Based on the FUKO tweet, I don’t think it is the album cover.

That’s one of the best interviews I’ve read (although the author is a fangirl, SHOCK), b/c she asked some different questions. I noticed SNL was mentioned…Diet Jew. HA HA HA Tell me about it. ;) So nice that she asked about his mom, dad and grandparents. LISTEN UP, REPORTERS. It’s not JUST about the music. It’s about the person (and not just not who said person is dating and kissing, EITHER).

ETA: IMO, Adam looked surprised that Laura Saltman was holding out on him and us. ;) I doubt she has insider info, but I am sure it is info Adam we don’t know and Adam doesn’t know she knows, if that makes sense. ;)

Adam wanted to come off as a rock god on AI

Adam has frequently commented that he is thrilled to be living his dream of becoming a rock star. However, I’m not totally sold on that being the way he originally was trying to portray himself on AI. He did receive plenty of positive feedback in that direction, especially from Kara and Randy. I personally feel he was trying to show ALL aspects of his vocal range and capabilities, including style. He was definitely the most diverse of all the contestants.

I have some friends who commented on Adam’s “screeching” during some of his performances. I defended this by saying that Adam had only 90 seconds to show what he could do vocally with a song. Let’s face it, these guys have a minute and a half to showcase their abilities. That “screeching” would not seem as such with the longer (normal) version of a song. That’s why the studio versions were more polished, although I love seeing Adam perform! If I had to choose, I probably would rather watch Adam perform for 90 seconds than listen to a longer studio recording!

I think I have you beat — I sent it to my 20 year old son! LOL!

Here is an article in Jewish Journal on Adam that is really good:

Look at the bottom for the transcript of the actual interview.

I loved this interview. I love that he gives a shout out to Danielle, their relationship has always seemed so wonderful.

You are way too funny, Q3! I love it!! :)

On a shallow note, in this interview with Laura, I’m esp. charmed by this hairstyle, parted to the other side. It flatters his face-shape and shows off his better side (the side with the smoother skin). I love all his looks, but this may be my favorite, at least this week. :-)

By the look on Adam’s face, it didn’t seem it was a news-type of surprise. The look was more like, what are you going to spring on me?

    Maybe it’s a giant inflatable kangaroo’ ¦

LMAO, maybe that’s why he looked so nervous —it’s baack!!

I just love how when Adam talks about being excited a performance, he inevitably talks about his outfit.

He was a bit cagier about denying the SNL rumor than the Lady Gaga rumor. That would be a real coup. David Cook was on SNL last year and it apparently really miffed the Daughtry fans because he’s never been on SNL.

OK, just my take on the upcoming Laura “surprise” . . .

Adding up what (we think) we know:
    1. Won’t (Can’t?) be announced till Tues, Oct 20
    2. Adam looks to side and seems to comment on (maybe) someone coming in
    3. Adam doesn’t know what it is and has already answered her questions (SNL, GaGa, etc) about the usual suspects
    4. In blurry picture Laura has something (flat) that she is reading/showing to Adam. (Handed to her by person who came in?)
    5. There have been comments about his house and something to put (hang?) in it
    6. There have been comments about it being newsworthy, but probably not that big of a deal.
    7. Access Hollywood has the (exclusive?) announcement

I’m assuming that she will be presenting him wth some kind of plaque/award (ala most popular RS cover) which might be for number of pre-album orders, or fasting rising CD or some such. They compile the figures for these things in advance, but don’t necessarily want them published until the following week — hence holding off to make the announcement official. Since Adam has so many accomplishments to choose from, it’s just a matter of qualifying how they want to “skew” it, i.e. “Fastest rising pre-sales for a CD called TBD for a runner up on AI without a single . . .” or whatever. The trick isn’t to fnd out what it’s for, but by whom it’s given.

Laura is on Access Hollywood which is a division of_____under the umbrella of _____ managed by _______ which is affiliated with X music distributor is probably the way to go. If we narrow down the 6 degrees of separation between AH and someone who can (and wants) to give Adam an award, I think we can probably figure it out.*** (Imma finish now and turn the mike over to Q3, SuperResearcher!)

*** Or we can wait till Tuesday.
