Holy crap, Adam Lambert has some wealthy fans. Or, I hope they are wealthy, and not ransacking their 401Ks…

The Ebay auction for the signed Ellen Degeneres underwear and photo given to Ellen by Adam during his recent appearance on her birthday show has a final bid of $8500!  Bidding finished this morning at 6 am PST.

Yowza! And totally good for the Red Cross–the organization will get the proceeds on behalf of those still suffering the effects of the earthquake in Haiti!

Bonus Video: After the jump, watch Adam’s AOL Sessions preview!

I wasn’t trying to bait anyone. Sigh…..I’ve held my opinion all day, because I didn’t want to come across that way.

Well, it would depend on how you approached it. Personally, I don’t think calling someone gay is an insult. lol.

I hope there are no hard feelings. I enjoy this blog immensely. Sometimes it is apparent who you favor and that is kinda hard.

  • iluvai

MJ: I love your lol. Thanks woman!!!!!

    I apologize if I’m acting ugly. :(

Yes, Kris and Cook fans think I favor Adam, Adam fans think I favor anyone but Adam. Taylor fans thought I was running an Elliott blog, Elliott fans thought I was running a Taylor blog…

I recently put a bunch of Kris fans in moderation, and I hear they’re running me down on twitter…

I get it from all sides, but that’s ok.

    No, no hard feelings.

  • Mainegal

I get it from all sides, but that’s ok.

I’m certain it’s “lonely at the top” at times. But I believe the overwhelming majority of us post here with the best of intentions.
    Thanks MJ.

    Now I feel bad!!!!!

Love the blog! I’m not sure how you balance it all, MJ! But I’m not here to be nasty or rude. No way!!! Looking forward to next week.

I’m serious…there’s really no hard feelings. Don’t worry about it. :).

The contributions for Haiti relief are unprecedented and should raise eyebrows — because across the US, from people who have a lot of money to people who have very little — the generousity of people for this cause is amazing.

This isn’t just a bid for some fan memorabilia — it is a donation that goes 100% to the Red Cross to assist with Haitian relief.

But to speculate that this anonymous bidder can’t afford the contribution, is a deluded fan or any other speculation has no basis.

One thing is certain, some Adam fans have enough money to support charitable giving. DonorChoose.org Adam Lambert contributions now exceed $300K, and the Adam Lambert Birthday Giving Page campaign raised $36K in 29 days and had over 500 donors with only Twitter and fansite online promotion. So I can’t speak to other Idol fans, but it seems that some Adam fans can afford to contribute money to help others.

There are many professionals and in very high level positions who are Adam fans. I know for a fact some Adam fans who can drop $8000 for charity, or whatever they desire, at the blink of an eye. But why are we even questioning this. This is for Haiti relief. Bottom line. It really breaks my heart thinking about it.

But to speculate that this anonamous bidder can’t afford the contribution, is a deluded fan or any other speculation has no basis.

Yes there is a basis. History. I’ve seen enough deluded fan behavior to know it’s quite possible.

It’s also possible that the person who made the donation could comfortably afford it. I don’t need your stats to prove that to me. All sorts of people make up fan bases–rich, poor, deluded rational.

It’s not a terrible thing to speculate. That’s what we do here.

I agree it is NOT a terrible thing to speculate — but is it a terrible thing to put forward facts that challenge that speculation?

    There are two possibilities:

    1. The buyer is a rational person who wanted to support the Red Cross effort in Haiti, is an Adam Lambert fans and can afford to donate $8,500 to Haiti Relief.

    2. The buyer is a deluded Adam fan who just had to have some underwear that look like one’s Adam wore and a signed, framed Adam photograph and cannot really afford to donate $8,500 to Haiti Relief.

There are millions of rational Idol fans and some isolated cases of “deluded fan behavior”. So is #2 possible? Sure. But what are the odds?

Well having grown up a big ol’ geek and being parts of the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek fandoms, ya know, spending money for crap just doesn’t shock me. I mean, really, even Idol loonies and “sparkle cows,” and yes, maybe even Claymates, have to give it up to Trekkers and Star Wars (well before Lucas destroyed the franchise) geeks in terms of devotion and spending money on useless crap. And hey, it wasn’t even for good causes.

Not to mention all the other geeky fandoms of my childhood, but some of them don’t spend as much money on things. I mean, I don’t THINK there are fangroups for “Sufferin’ Till Sufferage,” (SchoolHouse Rock) who seek to buy things somehow associated with it, but even if it were possible? I don’t want to know. Some childhood memories should remain inviolate.

Anyhew, yes there are always nutjobs who will bankrupt themselves for Idols, or sundry crap, they don’t make up the majority of the fans, but they do exist. It’s possible this winner of this auction was one. It’s possible they weren’t. I don’t take it personally to think that some Adam fan who spent a lot of money on something of Adam’s might be on the extreme end of the bellcurve. Totally possible and that’s a fair amount of money. However, without any evidence to say that it isn’t totally reasonable for them, I’m also not willing to say that this is automatically crazy and they don’t have the money to give to a really worthy charity AND also happen to get some Adam crap out of it.

Both are possible, neither are proveable. Eh.

If anyone has Ellens’s birthday show when Adam presented her with his picture should go back and take a look.
I watched it and did not tape it, but I was watching it rather intently.
This is what I heard and whether it was followed through with or not
    would be purely speculative.
Adam tells her he has a present for her, and then hands her the Photo
with the ribbon around it and says (paraphrase) I thought I would like to give you this to put on E Bay for the haiti charity. She was appropriately pleased turned slightly toward him lowered her voice but is still clear “Adam, I’m going to buy it myself/ I mean it and then mentioned putting it up with some of her underwear.
So, still just speculating…….entirely possible that she may have followed through or she might just have said that to promote a
bidding war to increase the bids.
It would also make sense, because she is pretty savvy, that she would
turn around and re offer to sell this on Ebay again. Ellen knows how to
work for her charities, and how to get other peers sponsors et al, to
    commit as well?????!!!!!!

tiger92 “Sisterhood of the travelling undies” Haha, aha I think I just
split my pleather pants….ala the Jessie interview!

That it’s for Haiti relief has nothing to do with the discussion. I don’t buy that just because a charity is involved, it’s off-limits to questions.

Both are possible, neither are proveable. Eh.

Exactly. And with that? I’m done.

Did any Star Trek fans spend $8,500 for William Shatner’s underwear?

Just kidding. I think that it’s underwear and not some special outfit that kind of makes the whole thing a tad surreal. Anyway, I’d say there are more than a few OTT Idol fans but I have no idea if this person is one of them.

  • Laury

You’re my favorite American Idol blogger because you don’t take sides. You just keep us informe of everything about American Idol. (And you don’t accept fan war)

I discovered your blog looking for Adam’s news, and now I’ve even started to like other idols as well….

Thank you for all this hardwork!! :)

  • Lu

Yes, Kris and Cook fans think I favor Adam, Adam fans think I favor anyone but Adam. Taylor fans thought I was running an Elliott blog, Elliott fans thought I was running a Taylor blog…

But you WERE running a Taylor blog!!! hahahahahahahaha j/k j/k…. ahhhh the fireant memories….

  • Lu

Thank God the money is going to a good cause. Because in about a year, the owner of that underwear is going to feel like a complete ninny. I’m really praying they can afford it.

Aint that the truth…. an 8k pair of drawers… only in America…lol

  • Laurie

This number sounds impressive, but I remember two seasons ago that someone paid $15,000 for lunch with Jason Castro. That really caught my attention!

  • tiger92

Did any Star Trek fans spend $8,500 for William Shatner’s underwear? Just kidding

Don’t laugh! I bet they would!

have to give it up to Trekkers and Star Wars (well before Lucas destroyed the franchise) geeks in terms of devotion and spending money on useless crap. And hey, it wasn’t even for good causes.

It makes me think of Big Bang Theory! :)

If ontd_ai is right and the winning bidder is going to turn around and offer it for sale again to make more money for Haiti, I guess the old, bankrupt cat lady speculation will be wrong. If this ends up being true, then it seems that this was a extremely wealthy fan who just wanted to give to the Haiti relief effort and now wants to raise even more money for a good cause.

  • CanadianFan

MJ, you know who I think you truly admire….Kelly Clarkson. And I have no problem with that.

  • Lu

Darn MJ – I thought for sure my fireant comment would get a response – lol.

Whoever git the 8k pair of BVDs, I hope they enjoy them 8k worth. Even if I had the money, I can’t imagine doing that – just eww. But hey – that’s just me.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Honestly, not seeing the big deal, or why the speculation merits the cavalry marching in with their 20 paragraph posts. A variety of opinions have been expressed here. It’s all good.

Eh, you’re right, MJ. I was over-reacting thinking that things could go down a pretty nasty lane. But, they weren’t, and they haven’t. Sorry about that!

Did any Star Trek fans spend $8,500 for William Shatner’s underwear?

Hey! Who told you about that? But, an autographed copy of his album, The Transformed Man, was included! So, it was worth it.

Eh, you’re right, MJ. I was over-reacting thinking that things could go down a pretty nasty lane. But, they weren’t, and they haven’t. Sorry about that!

I’m sorry too. I let a couple of things get under my skin and inserted myself into the conversation where I shouldn’t have.

I shut my computer off last night and took some time away. I needed to do that. I have a much better perspective this morning.
