Adam Lambert: Ellen Degeneres Underwear Auction Goes for $8,500 on Ebay!

Holy crap, Adam Lambert has some wealthy fans. Or, I hope they are wealthy, and not ransacking their 401Ks…

The Ebay auction for the signed Ellen Degeneres underwear and photo given to Ellen by Adam during his recent appearance on her birthday show has a final bid of $8500!  Bidding finished this morning at 6 am PST.

Yowza! And totally good for the Red Cross–the organization will get the proceeds on behalf of those still suffering the effects of the earthquake in Haiti!

Bonus Video: After the jump, watch Adam’s AOL Sessions preview!

  • Truthiness

Well good cause, as it does go all to Haiti, but still…uh yeah. The only thing that makes it slightly less weird for me personally, is that hey! if people like Daniel Day-Lewis, Tilda Swinton, Helen Mirren and Emma Thompson, Ricky Gervais who are some of my fave actors, can aution off signed underwear for charity as well, at least Adam is keeping good company. Yeah, they really did, swears!

  • lazyc0w

oh wow.. so seems like they will be posting adam’s sessions soon. They took just too long for Allison’s and Kris’.

  • Planet Fierce

IMHO, it’s all good. Whatever pulls in the $$$ for the cause is great. The sweatier the better for me for you dude (at least when it comes to Adam).

  • bridgette12

Glad to hear his underwear is bringing some pleasure to a well off fan, plus raising money for Haiti.

  • dhunken

However weird people think it is I think it went to a good cause and that is all that matters. Good to who ever purchased it and I for one am going to applaud the amount raised. If it is good enough for Daniel Day-Lewis and Emma Thompson its good enough for Adam. (Oh and the Black Eyed Peas did it too)

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

    ^^^^ Ditto!

  • TwigLA

Glad they made some money for Haiti relief. I hope the person who bought them actually comes through with the money. I also wonder if they’ll wind up being resold on ebay down the road.

    Re this:

They took just too long for Allison’s and Kris’.

Kris’ Sessions is STILL not up nor even any crumbs. If we didn’t know that some fans actually got to be there I think I’d doubt it ever happened.

  • Pixie Baker

Just wonderin’…….the person who bought this may have been thinking….”all the hype says Adam maybe the next MJ….this may be a good investment! ” Now don’t read into this that I think he is destined to be the next MJ (although he was my favorite last year!)…just adding to the speculation.;)…It is going to a great cause so it is all good!

  • cookcricket

Sorry, but I will not be a happy camper if Adam’s AOL sessions are released before Kris’s.

  • JudyL

Hope the purchaser could actually afford to spend $8,500. Reminded me of stories that Taylor Hicks had fans that cashed in their savings to follow him around the country. Have no idea if it was true but that really bothered me at the time.

If they can afford it then it’s money for a good cause.

  • Mainegal

If I had that kind of $$$ to donate to a worthy cause….it would be a “double pleasure” to not only give the bucks, but draw attention to the creative ways that people with very good intentions use to highlight a fundraising effort.
I’m sure the press attention to Adam’s donated underwear generated more $$$ to Haiti than the final bid.

  • auntieaimee

    Maybe Ellen bought them.

  • Teri63

ITA! And, the fact that it seems they weren’t really his underwear makes it decidedly not weird to me. The ebay item was listed as “new, never worn,” so they were obviously just Ellen underwear her show provided for Adam to sign and sell for charity. It’s a goofy auction item, for sure, but really no different than the autographed picture that was sold along with the undies.

Anyway, good for Adam for using his name to generate awareness/$$ for a worthy cause.

  • HeidiL

    Gross!

  • tls62

Good for the purchaser! How exciting to have a couple one a kind items (wasn’t the framed, signed picture included also?).

I would never second guess or even care if the purchaser could afford it or not…none of my business. I just hope they enjoy what they got and I appreciate their effort to help the less fortunate. And heck…it’s only money, right?….they’ll earn some more next week. :)

    ————————–
You do realize they were “new” and never worn, right?

  • oceana

Idol fans are very generous with their Idols. Clay Aiken’s fans have spent tens of thousands of dollars for some of his mementos (for charity and/or to meet him). I really seem to recall things going for huge amounts (they probably included lunch with Clay). It is shocking sometimes how much money Idol fans have.

  • dcglam

    Maybe Ellen bought them.

LOL!! She could certainly afford them…… ;)

  • dcglam

I feel that out of the two items that were being auctioned, the underwear was the “main attraction”. I don’t think they would have raised nearly as much for just the photo alone. I could be wrong though……..

  • starstruck2000

dcglam….I think that the attraction of these items was that they were donated by Adam himself.

  • clearone

Sad thing is people shouldn’t need any form of enticement to donate to Haiti. They should be doing it on compassion alone.

  • LK09

ITA! And, the fact that it seems they weren’t really his underwear makes it decidedly not weird to me. The ebay item was listed as “new, never worn,” so they were obviously just Ellen underwear her show provided for Adam to sign and sell for charity.

I heard those stories too. There was also the matter of an auction for a signed guitar, the numbers went all the way to 9K, and in the end, the bidder couldn’t pay for it. So, I hope this person who bid can actually pony up the dough.

  • dcglam

I think that the attraction of these items was that they were donated by Adam himself.

    Great thought, starstruck2000!

  • agathe.hb

clearone, I totally agree with you, but I think it’s the people with money who should show the example
I was listening to Rosie O’Donnel on Howard Stern and she said that all the celebrities that took part in the telethon should donate money, not only a couple of hours of their time and I agree with her
I think George Clooney is great, not only did he donate 1 million, but spent a lot of time and energy to organize the whole thing

  • zzatrms

So, I hope this person who bid can actually pony up the dough.

eBay had this on the item ….

This listing is restricted to pre-approved buyers only. Email the seller to be placed on that pre-approved list.

  • Tess

I think George Clooney is great, not only did he donate 1 million, but spent a lot of time and energy to organize the whole thing

I am sure that a lot of people in Hollywood donate a lot of money to their favorite charities and causes. And I am sure that they probably, also, gave to the Red Cross or others for Haitii relief. But I think it is pretty unfair that we think that donating should required to be PR and amounts mentioned so that us little people can cross the “biggies” off of our tracking list.

Besides someone like George Clooney who makes 20 Million a picture can afford to write a quick 1 million dollar check. That’s pocket change and a tax write off for him. So, yup lots of kudos for doing it, George, but your time and effort in pulling off the entire evening was just as meaningful and just as important.

These are common tales in Idol land. I’ve heard about people flying all over the world and going to 20 or 30 shows for Taylor, Clay, David Cook, etc. I find it hard to fathom how 20 shows on the same tour with only the same first cd of songs to pull from can even be entertaining, but whatever. Odds are, most of those people couldn’t actually afford to do that and accumulated a lot of debt during the process. Odds are also good that when the economy hit the shitter, some of those people couldn’t pay that debt and it remains uncollected today.

I’ve worked on a lot of auctions, and the number for this item, in such a widespread auction doesn’t really surprise me all of that much. I’ve seen people pay more for a Derek Jeter bat, with only 300 bidders in the room. (Although, when you are auctioning off anything signed and used by a sports icon, you can get drunk men to pay nearly anything :)).

  • iluvai

    Maybe Ellen bought them.

I was thinking Lindsay Lohan! :)

  • Niall

It is shocking sometimes how much money Idol fans have.

I think more often than not it’s a case of “it’s shocking how far into debt some people are willing to go.” I’m all for charity donations but only in the amount a person can comfortably afford to give. Hopefully the good deed of raising $8500 for Haiti isn’t followed by a bankruptcy filing or defaulting on a credit card.

  • oceana

I think more often than not it’s a case of “it’s shocking how far into debt some people are willing to go.”

True, and sad when that happens.

Is it really an idol phenomenon? I thought all artists had people follow them from show to show. I think they even have a special name for them…..groupies :D Maybe it is worse with idols or maybe we just know about it cuz we follow so much of what the idols do. I agree odds are some of them go in debt. The whole practice is whacky imo, why take your budget into consideration?!?
As far as the underwear auction is concerned – I say it’s a fabulous win win situation. It’s nice if charity is given without anything in return, but it’s pretty common to “entice” people to donate to charities through various means: galas, silent auctions, races, selling candy bars etc. Like I said, it’s a win-win in my book :)

  • lindajean139

Ditto……to some of the posters who already commented on this. But you couldn’t bid unless you were pre-approved.

It went to a good cause. I am suprised at how high the price went. I wasn’t expecting that. I was suprised when it went to 3k. He is new to the music industry afterall.

I have noticed that Adam has an extremely diverse fanbase – ages 5 to 80. Grade school, highschool, Grad school, workers & retirees. I’ve never seen one so diverse. I also noticed he attracts a lot of high earning professionals and Hollywood people. So maybe that’s who ponied up. Whoever it is did it for Adam otherwise they would have given the money straight to the Redcross and bypassed the bidding.

  • alaadam

Being new to this, I was wondering. What is the big deal about the AOL sessions? How do they help an artist or do they? Why does everyone get excited/angst over them?

  • revcat

Who can explain fandom? Taylor Swift gets sold out in 5 minutes! However I myself would only fly out of my area to see Adam only if it were New York City because I love that town and would like an excuse to go there again anyway!

Yes, the economy is bad and a lot of people went in debt, but for those of us who can afford to pay as we go it’s good thing to support our favorite artists. It’s fun and it helps the economy, win win! For those who can’t afford it, better days will come…

  • tiger92

I think more often than not it’s a case of “it’s shocking how far into debt some people are willing to go.”

Why are we assuming that the winner of this auction is going into debt or filing bankruptcy? Celebrities, entertainers and sports icons donate items to charity auctions all the time! People pay a ridiculous amount of money for all sorts of things. Why assume they are all going into debt or filing bankruptcy?
Many extremely wealthy people HAVE TO GIVE to charities to help offset their income for tax purposes. (It’s either going to the government or a charity.) Why not collect memorabilia in the process? It’s not like you are getting an item that is worth what you are spending! Underwear for 8,000? A baseball bat for 10,0000? A pair of shoes for $15,000?
$10,000 dollars to some people is like $1,000 or $100 to most people. There are a vast majority of people who give $1,000 or $100 a year to charities.
It’s $8,000 dollars going to a great cause. I’m not going to assume the winning bidder will now have to live on the streets.

  • luval

Wow…he looks soooooooooooo beautiful in the AOL sessions. That black crocheted thingy on his left wrist is something I could make. I crochet all the time. It’s called the shell stitch. Now I’ll have to go down in my basement and look for some steel spikes to put in it. Had some construction work done on the house recently so I know I have some 4 inch ones. Then I’ll have to think of someplace to wear it! LOL

  • TwigLA

I was listening to Rosie O’Donnel on Howard Stern and she said that all the celebrities that took part in the telethon should donate money, not only a couple of hours of their time and I agree with her

Rosie O’Donnel loves to shoot off her mouth. How does she know all those celebrities DIDN’T also donate money. In fact, I’d be more inclined to assume they did and not the other way around.

Back to the auction. Reading the comments and the hope that the person who won can actually afford it, the one image that came to mind was that 86 year old woman who thinks of Adam as her son/grandson. I could seriously see her dipping into her retirement fund to get that portrait.

  • tiger92

I cannot imagine anything but good coming from this auction. And the fact on this are pretty straight — 100% of proceed go to American Red Cross and buy was prequalified to make the purchase. Overall thoughtfully set up.

The whole point of this auction was to promote giving to the Red Cross for Haiti Relief. It was a memorable part of The Ellen Show, mentioned on at least 3 other TV shows and there are over 100 articles about it online plus blog entrees and tweets about it.

In addition, the auction raised $8,500 for the Red Cross.

Regarding the buyer — the winning bidder was pre-approved to purchase the item [that means they had available credit to purchase the item] and has purchased at least 13 other items on EBay with good reviews. So doubtful that the winner is going to have financial issues in order to purchase this item. In fact, The winner had to have a credit card or Pay Pal account with at least an $8,500 creditline, and was current on the account so that the credit was available.

Finally check out the listing 100% of the proceed go to the American Red Cross. So why should someone buypass the auction. The listing:

Adam Lambert Signed ELLEN Underwear + Photo LOA
100% of proceeds benefit America Red Cross Haiti Relief

WIHT played WWFM 4 times last week. It’s not on their chart yet for this week and the lowest song on the chart has 3 spins so it may take a while before it is played there regularly. Sorry girls! :-(

    Dear Adam:
I’m so glad you’re getting a well deserved vacation. Heck, I’ve even managed to catch up on my work at my pesky job and have dusted at home for the first time in….well I won’t say how long. Please hurry back though, when you’re rested of course, because we’re bored now and can only talk about your undies for so long.

Hope you had a wonderful vacation. Maybe you are starting to get bored now? On your way back from wherever, maybe you can stop in Wisconsin to see your oldest fan Isabelle. It would be so nice and make her so happy.

    I’m wondering…….
Are we the only part of the country that is not hearing Adam on the radio???

We’re just starting to hear him every so often here in Chicago. Our Kiss station (103.5) played it at a little after 3 this morning (I had my radio on as I slept, and just hearing Adam’s name woke me up. Scary!), and I’ve heard the tail end of it on that station once in the past week. The Mix (FM 101.9) plays it about once a day now — but at all different times, and none of them “prime” driving times or anything. Most of the plays have been between 8 and 10 p.m., and this morning I saw they played it during the wee hours, around 4 a.m. or so.

  • dcglam

OMG! I hear Adam on Z100 constantly and I smile every time.

We’re just starting to hear him every so often here in Chicago.

I’m so happy for you, Teri63. I think for some areas it is just taking a bit longer. I’m sure I will go totally bonkers the first time I hear Adam on a DC station. ;)

I thought auctioning off Ellen underwear was something several celebrities have done? Or did I misunderstand that? Why is it weird that Adam did it?

Thank you so much for this. I did not know this happened. How could I have missed it? I’m on mj’s blog as often as I can be.

So great for all the people who put this together. What a wonderful story and I can’t wait to see what she thinks of the show!

The power of twitter! All of it transpired today. IT was AMAZING to watch it come together in the last 24 hours. I still can’t believe a 17 year old boy in Canada helped a woman in Wisconsin see her dream. AMAZING! The story of Isabelle that Fantasy tweeted is heartwarming too. Read it if you get a chance. She has really seen and learned alot from life.

  • tls62

Lansing, Michigan (my local top 40 station) did the same thing two weeks ago. Started playing him once a day at 2-3am for a few days then added him at the 6-7am slot too. Now this week they’re playing him 4 times a day, all in good slots. It’s frustrating, but it just takes time and you obviously can’t rush PD’s. :(

  • luval

alaadam…And I felt twitter was the devil!

I read Fantasy Springs story. It was so beautiful. I couldn’t think of anything else for the past few days except how Isabelle could see Adam. Boy that Sean is really cute!

And 8K is a ton of dough–it’s only natural for people to raise an eyebrow or two.

The only place I can imagine that not happening is a fan board.

8K is a ton of dough to most of us. Most of us can’t imagine giving that much money to charity, but people do it everyday.
Why should it raise an eyebrow? Celebrities auction things off for charity all the time. If the auction raises a ton of money, do we then question why?

OMG! Yes, I’m sure it’s some 86 year old woman who has to empty her retirement fund out. LOL

If we aren’t going to assume it’s somebody poor, why assume it’s somebody rich?

I really did think it was funny! Anyone can assume anything! Why not? We don’t know the truth so why not be OTT with who it MIGHT be. It can be fun!

It could be a poor old cat lady who is now going to have to give her cats away because she can’t feed them. Poor, poor kitties! :) Or it could be Simon or Ryan- they have the money and some think they are fanboys. haha Maybe it’s a group of women who split the costs and are going to share the undies. You know…sisterhood of the traveling underpants. LOL
Or the buyer could be a millionaire who is an Adam fan who was going to donate thousands to charity anyhow!

Thanks luvadamlambert and alaadam!!! Great article.

Now I wish the national media would get on this story…Isabelle’s story. It truly would send the message of her love for all people and how Adam is an inspiration. The world needs to see this. We need a true heartwarming story in this day and age and here it is.

I am such a huge Adam fan and people I know just don’t get it. I have sent them her video and some of them were really touched! Just takes one person at a time. Now I will send them the “rest of the story”.

If only I wasn’t so computer illiterate or I would figure out how to send this out to the big ones.. ABC (well maybe not), NBC, CBS and all the others. The only thing I’ve ever done was send an e-mail to NFL media asking them to listen to Adam’s Sure Fire Winner. Never heard anything!
ps..Have to admit I spent a lot of money on something related to Adam (for donorschoose) and don’t regret it one bit.

  • tiger92

    You answered your own question

8K is a ton of dough to most of us. Most of us can’t imagine giving that much money to charity

Most of us can’t imagine being millionaires. Doesn’t mean they don’t exist and they don’t give tons of money to organizations and charities everyday. Just because I can’t imagine having enough money to give one million dollars to the Haiti Relief fund, doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the fact that George Clooney could give a gift like that. Just because I can’t imagine being wealthy like that doesn’t mean that I question those that are.

  • tls62

The Isabelle story really touches your heart. I’ll be at the Glamily event and hope to meet her. I would do most anything if Adam would be able to meet her in her VIP suite just for a moment. What a treasure she is….so inspiring.

Or the buyer could be a millionaire who is an Adam fan who was going to donate thousands to charity anyhow!

And since that millionaire loves the thrill of the Ebay auction, they were like “why not?”.

Seriously, If I had $8500 to donate to charity, I would have enjoyed watching the auction bids go up and up. I’t fun. And then I could re-donate the item again! :)

Didn’t someone sell a lock of Adam’s hair on Ebay this summer? That one had me scratching my head for sure.

  • lazyc0w

The most amazing thing, i feel about the isabelle story, apart from the fact that she is an 86 yr old fan, is that adam’s fan seem very generous and helpful. For example the whole Terry thing and kudos to Sean for starting this one! Amazingly generous and giving people!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Just because I can’t imagine being wealthy like that doesn’t mean that I question those that are.

Who’s questioning rich people? If there’s any questioning, it’s around whether the person who won the auction can afford it or not. 8K is a lot of money. Maybe they can, maybe they can’t. We don’t know. Hence, the speculation and the questions. And the raised eyebrows.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Well, what are you going to do? If the entire amount weren’t going to charity, I’d say, “What a ridiculous waste of money.” But, as long as the person can afford it (and we have no way of knowing – at least right now – if they can or can’t) then who cares? It’s their money and their business. Donating 10 grand a year to charity isn’t unheard of to people in the 150-250k income range. You don’t have to be a millionaire. And, I doubt Ellen is complaining about the 8 grand.

I’m perplexed that the conversation regarding the $8500 donation has continued to whirl around concern and speculaton of the financial situation of the generous donor. Typically generosity (at any $$$ amount) is met with a big “thank you!!”

It takes all i can do to worry about my own finances. I don’t have the space to worry about whether or not someone can afford a charitible donation. Just glad someone could. Adam fans might be cray cray but they are very generous….hence Isabella, Terry, and Donar’s Choose.

  • Mary102

Hot 99.5.My friend’s heard it 4 times this week…(lol-I bet on Z100 they hear wwfm 4 times a day!)

Not bad for 99.5 – considering their very limited regular rotation (as in, same 5 songs each hour). I don’t get as much time to listen to it with my current schedule, but need to try in the hopes that I’ll hear it!

  • jpfan

Idol fans have a history of spending insane amounts of money to support their guys. I remember hearing about Taylor fans who cashed in their retirement accounts to follow him on tour.

Rich people who donate to charity aren’t anyone’s concern. But sometimes Idol fans aren’t rich just a little crazy. Who knows maybe that 86 year fan bought the undies and is now broke.

I think the Claymate who spent $50K to eat dinner with him still takes the cake in fandom though. Although maybe the undie buyer will put them on display and charge admission. Not a bad idea…

  • tls62

Amen on the donation speculation. I say congratulations to the lucky buyer. When I first saw the undies I thought how cool it would be to frame them and display them on the wall with framed album covers from the 70′s. I’ve always wanted to frame some of our old covers and display them in our game room. Bowie, TRex, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, etc. The undies would have been a cool addition.

  • jpfan

The most consistent thing around is the craziness of Idol fans. But again, as long as the “lucky buyer” can afford the $ it’s not a problem.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I’m perplexed that the conversation regarding the $8500 donation has continued to whirl around concern and speculaton of the financial situation of the generous donor. Typically generosity (at any $$$ amount) is met with a big “thank you!!”

Because it’s a discussion thread. And it’s open to all comers. And I’ve seen too much in the Idol fandom to not speculate a little about the bidder.

I’m deleting posts that fingerwag or lecture. I’m also deleting the chat stuff. Let’s stick to discussing the topic. Thanks.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Also, Please don’t comment on the discussion. The topic isn’t the thread.

  • cwm

Totally agreeing with you, Mainegal, tls62, LaurelG, etc. I’m certainly not gonna worry about whether or not they can afford it; it’s cool that they got some fun Adam memorabilia and the Red Cross got a nice donation. It’s a win-win.

The story of Isabel going to Adam’s concert is so heartwarming. I do hope she gets a chance to meet him. Hearing about the Glamily Reunion makes me want to go to Fantasy Springs even more. Sounds like great fun. But alas, not in the cards for me this time. But all of you who are going– we’re counting on you to represent those of us who can’t; and cheer, scream, laugh, dance, and smile on our behalf; and bring us back stories, tales, pics, and vids!

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

“Although maybe the undie buyer will put them on display and charge admission. Not a bad idea…”

LOL! Maybe a whole group went together and bought them, and they’re going to take turns possessing them. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Undies. Which is…. a horribly creepy thought. *must blot from mind*

I know Idol fans are notorious for doing crazy things. And, yeah. I think paying $8k for a pair of autographed underwear is crazy. But, as I said, since every dime goes to charity, I’m not going to condemn it. And I guess I’m just going to have to hope the person could afford it. If not, what can I do about it? I’m not going to lose sleep over this person. (I’m cold like that.)

Anyway, I noticed there’s a perfectly good Fender guitar also in the Ellen auction that was signed by artists at the Grammys. It’s currently going for a little over 2k. Now, if I had the funds, I’d have my eye on that.

  • Cookiebr7

I just read a post on ONTD_AI that the buyer of the underpants is going to put them up on ebay again and use them to continue to raise money for Haiti. If this act were to be repeated, think of the good that Adam’s traveling underpants will do! I am blown away by the generosity and cleverness of Adam’s fans.

  • gangreen29

Now I wish the national media would get on this story…Isabelle’s story. It truly would send the message of her love for all people and how Adam is an inspiration. The world needs to see this. We need a true heartwarming story in this day and age and here it is.

Um, how is this a story the world needs to see? I really don’t see the newsworthiness of some old lady liking Adam Lambert and some people giving her money to see him in concert. I mean it is a nice little story to pass around fan boards, but national news?!?! Come on, a little perspective would be nice.

I don’t think the underwear thing is a big deal. Other stars have done it, it raises money for charity, and for all we now the person was going to donate the money anyway and decided to get something out of it in the process. I personally wouldn’t want it, but it sure is a conversation piece.

  • iluvai

I cannot imagine anything but good coming from this auction.

And 8K is a ton of dough–it’s only natural for people to raise an eyebrow or two.

The only place I can imagine that not happening is a fan board.

The contributions for Haiti relief are unprecedented and should raise eyebrows — because across the US, from people who have a lot of money to people who have very little — the generousity of people for this cause is amazing.

This isn’t just a bid for some fan memorabilia — it is a donation that goes 100% to the Red Cross to assist with Haitian relief.

But to speculate that this anonamous bidder can’t afford the contribution, is a deluded fan or any other speculation has no basis.

One thing is certain, some Adam fans have enough money to support charitable giving. DonorChoose.org Adam Lambert contributions now exceed $300K, and the Adam Lambert Birthday Giving Page campaign raised $36K in 29 days and had over 500 donors with only Twitter and fansite online promotion. So I can’t speak to other Idol fans, but it seems that some Adam fans can afford to contribute money to help others.

  • gangreen29

I know you are dying to know the answer. I’ve seen you post this earlier. But I have no idea! I’ve never followed AI stuff before this year. Maybe just the extra exposure??? Maybe someone can help us both out here! :)

Anyone know why the AOL sessions are so anticipated????

I’m not sure if this is the correct answer lol, but I think they are anticipated because it is good publicity to be on the AOL music page since so many people have AOL as their home page, but I think most people are anxious for them because they are a nice treat for fans. They are high quality videos of live performances of their songs, and lots of times artists take really interesting interpretations on their popular songs. I love Kat Mcphee’s change up to “over it” in her aol session.

  • alaadam

Thx gangreen29 I have been asking for days. Even asked MJ and she ignored it. lol. There seems to be alot of excitement/angst over them and I wondered why. How do they help the artist? Do they help with sales or just fans go look at it?

  • JOJOSIE

Anticipated, because you get to see live performances of songs from the album. We just can’t get enough of seeing live performances. Listening is fine, but sight and sound is so much better. Hope this helps answer the ?

  • iluvai

    Thanks Josie.

  • gangreen29

How do they help the artist? Do they help with sales or just fans go look at it?

It will def help with sales, although AOL is not as popular a website as it used to be, but it still is exposing it to an even bigger audience, I’ve discovered artists on it. It won’t be something that provides a giant bump, but more of a consistent bump over a longer period. Also, since the songs are usually changed up a bit it is nice for fans to see the songs they have seen performed a million times a bit differently.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

But to speculate that this anonamous bidder can’t afford the contribution, is a deluded fan or any other speculation has no basis.

Yes there is a basis. History. I’ve seen enough deluded fan behavior to know it’s quite possible.

It’s also possible that the person who made the donation could comfortably afford it. I don’t need your stats to prove that to me. All sorts of people make up fan bases–rich, poor, deluded rational.

It’s not a terrible thing to speculate. That’s what we do here.

MJ, please know I say this with respect. Is this site about fans and their delusional behavior? Or is it about American Idol? I was an avid reader of Idletard. But, I dont’ come here for Idletard bullshit. One person bought Adam’s autographed underwear. Are we supposed to mock that person? And make them feel like shit to teach them a lesson? What’s the agenda?

Are we supposed to mock that person? And make them feel like shit to teach them a lesson? What’s the agenda?

WTF? Way to put words in my mouth and twist around what I said. You know? I’m not even sure I want to try addressing this, because I keep trying to make a point, and y’all keep missing it, so why bother?

But I’ll give it one more shot, and then I’m done.

    1. Who is making you do anything? Nobody is telling you how to feel
    2. This isn’t Idletard, but it’s not a fansite either. I encourage debate that goes beyond the typical gushing and flailing you find on fan sites.
    3. Not that there’s anything wrong with gushing and flailing, but there’s got to be room for it all in these threads. Sorry, but I insist on it.
    3. Seriously, suggesting that the person could be a deluded fan? I’m not seeing what’s wrong with that. It’s a totally realistic and valid speculation.
    4. …And that’s the only point I’m making. That it’s a valid speculation, just as valid as the speculation that it could be some filthy rich Adam fan. I’m not suggesting anybody run off and stone the person, or that we spend pages mocking her/him (which hasn’t happened at all, so I have no idea what you’re talking about.)
    5. Honestly, not seeing the big deal, or why the speculation merits the cavalry marching in with their 20 paragraph posts. A variety of opinions have been expressed here. It’s all good.

  • tiger92

I get it from all sides, but that’s ok.

I’m certain it’s “lonely at the top” at times. But I believe the overwhelming majority of us post here with the best of intentions.
    Thanks MJ.

    Now I feel bad!!!!!

Love the blog! I’m not sure how you balance it all, MJ! But I’m not here to be nasty or rude. No way!!! Looking forward to next week.

I’m serious…there’s really no hard feelings. Don’t worry about it. :).

But to speculate that this anonymous bidder can’t afford the contribution, is a deluded fan or any other speculation has no basis.

There are many professionals and in very high level positions who are Adam fans. I know for a fact some Adam fans who can drop $8000 for charity, or whatever they desire, at the blink of an eye. But why are we even questioning this. This is for Haiti relief. Bottom line. It really breaks my heart thinking about it.

I agree it is NOT a terrible thing to speculate — but is it a terrible thing to put forward facts that challenge that speculation?

    There are two possibilities:

    1. The buyer is a rational person who wanted to support the Red Cross effort in Haiti, is an Adam Lambert fans and can afford to donate $8,500 to Haiti Relief.

    2. The buyer is a deluded Adam fan who just had to have some underwear that look like one’s Adam wore and a signed, framed Adam photograph and cannot really afford to donate $8,500 to Haiti Relief.

There are millions of rational Idol fans and some isolated cases of “deluded fan behavior”. So is #2 possible? Sure. But what are the odds?

Well having grown up a big ol’ geek and being parts of the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek fandoms, ya know, spending money for crap just doesn’t shock me. I mean, really, even Idol loonies and “sparkle cows,” and yes, maybe even Claymates, have to give it up to Trekkers and Star Wars (well before Lucas destroyed the franchise) geeks in terms of devotion and spending money on useless crap. And hey, it wasn’t even for good causes.

Not to mention all the other geeky fandoms of my childhood, but some of them don’t spend as much money on things. I mean, I don’t THINK there are fangroups for “Sufferin’ Till Sufferage,” (SchoolHouse Rock) who seek to buy things somehow associated with it, but even if it were possible? I don’t want to know. Some childhood memories should remain inviolate.

Anyhew, yes there are always nutjobs who will bankrupt themselves for Idols, or sundry crap, they don’t make up the majority of the fans, but they do exist. It’s possible this winner of this auction was one. It’s possible they weren’t. I don’t take it personally to think that some Adam fan who spent a lot of money on something of Adam’s might be on the extreme end of the bellcurve. Totally possible and that’s a fair amount of money. However, without any evidence to say that it isn’t totally reasonable for them, I’m also not willing to say that this is automatically crazy and they don’t have the money to give to a really worthy charity AND also happen to get some Adam crap out of it.

Both are possible, neither are proveable. Eh.

If anyone has Ellens’s birthday show when Adam presented her with his picture should go back and take a look.
I watched it and did not tape it, but I was watching it rather intently.
This is what I heard and whether it was followed through with or not
    would be purely speculative.
Adam tells her he has a present for her, and then hands her the Photo
with the ribbon around it and says (paraphrase) I thought I would like to give you this to put on E Bay for the haiti charity. She was appropriately pleased turned slightly toward him lowered her voice but is still clear “Adam, I’m going to buy it myself/ I mean it and then mentioned putting it up with some of her underwear.
So, still just speculating…….entirely possible that she may have followed through or she might just have said that to promote a
bidding war to increase the bids.
It would also make sense, because she is pretty savvy, that she would
turn around and re offer to sell this on Ebay again. Ellen knows how to
work for her charities, and how to get other peers sponsors et al, to
    commit as well?????!!!!!!

tiger92 “Sisterhood of the travelling undies” Haha, aha I think I just
split my pleather pants….ala the Jessie interview!

That it’s for Haiti relief has nothing to do with the discussion. I don’t buy that just because a charity is involved, it’s off-limits to questions.

Both are possible, neither are proveable. Eh.

Exactly. And with that? I’m done.

Did any Star Trek fans spend $8,500 for William Shatner’s underwear?

Just kidding. I think that it’s underwear and not some special outfit that kind of makes the whole thing a tad surreal. Anyway, I’d say there are more than a few OTT Idol fans but I have no idea if this person is one of them.

You’re my favorite American Idol blogger because you don’t take sides. You just keep us informe of everything about American Idol. (And you don’t accept fan war)

I discovered your blog looking for Adam’s news, and now I’ve even started to like other idols as well….

Thank you for all this hardwork!! :)

  • Lu

Yes, Kris and Cook fans think I favor Adam, Adam fans think I favor anyone but Adam. Taylor fans thought I was running an Elliott blog, Elliott fans thought I was running a Taylor blog…

But you WERE running a Taylor blog!!! hahahahahahahaha j/k j/k…. ahhhh the fireant memories….

  • Lu

Thank God the money is going to a good cause. Because in about a year, the owner of that underwear is going to feel like a complete ninny. I’m really praying they can afford it.

Aint that the truth…. an 8k pair of drawers… only in America…lol

  • Laurie

This number sounds impressive, but I remember two seasons ago that someone paid $15,000 for lunch with Jason Castro. That really caught my attention!

  • tiger92

Did any Star Trek fans spend $8,500 for William Shatner’s underwear? Just kidding

Don’t laugh! I bet they would!

have to give it up to Trekkers and Star Wars (well before Lucas destroyed the franchise) geeks in terms of devotion and spending money on useless crap. And hey, it wasn’t even for good causes.

It makes me think of Big Bang Theory! :)

If ontd_ai is right and the winning bidder is going to turn around and offer it for sale again to make more money for Haiti, I guess the old, bankrupt cat lady speculation will be wrong. If this ends up being true, then it seems that this was a extremely wealthy fan who just wanted to give to the Haiti relief effort and now wants to raise even more money for a good cause.

  • CanadianFan

MJ, you know who I think you truly admire….Kelly Clarkson. And I have no problem with that.

  • Lu

Darn MJ – I thought for sure my fireant comment would get a response – lol.

Whoever git the 8k pair of BVDs, I hope they enjoy them 8k worth. Even if I had the money, I can’t imagine doing that – just eww. But hey – that’s just me.

Honestly, not seeing the big deal, or why the speculation merits the cavalry marching in with their 20 paragraph posts. A variety of opinions have been expressed here. It’s all good.

Eh, you’re right, MJ. I was over-reacting thinking that things could go down a pretty nasty lane. But, they weren’t, and they haven’t. Sorry about that!

Did any Star Trek fans spend $8,500 for William Shatner’s underwear?

Hey! Who told you about that? But, an autographed copy of his album, The Transformed Man, was included! So, it was worth it.

I’m sorry too. I let a couple of things get under my skin and inserted myself into the conversation where I shouldn’t have.

I shut my computer off last night and took some time away. I needed to do that. I have a much better perspective this morning.
