I really loved the performance, the beginning sound kind of weird but it turned out fantastic. Boy I bet they well get alot of money for Haiti especially with the Ellen Underwear.

Ok, here we go again… not liking the hair, but damn, if that was live singing (and I know it is) it was something else… really impressed by that vibrato that he uses to sustain his notes.

LOVE the hair. Someone called it the “candle flame” hair on some blog the other day….I don’t know which one…after reading so much, everything starts to blend together after a while. LOL But it certainly does look like a candle flame and I love it.

I don’t know about anybody else, but these live performances are making it difficult for me to listen to the CD since they are SOOO much better than the recorded versions. When I listen to WWFM now I find myself singing along with all of his improved changes he makes during the live performances. How many artists sing so much better live than recorded? What a yummy treat he is for all of us to enjoy.

OMG! Love it, love the song, love that it is even better live than on the cd, loved when Ellen said that she could have anyone to sing for her birthday, and she wanted Adam, go Ellen! And can I just say that I hope that Strut is the next single, should have been the first single for the AMA performance in my opinion. The song is awesome, shows Adams vocals and is funky enough to show his personality. BTW, I think he looked great, makeup, hair and the outfit, just eye candylicious for me. OK, going off to bid on the undies….joking, my hubby would probably have a heart attack and my teenage daughter would disown me, lol.

I feel this way about a lot of the idols, David C, Elliott, Kelly C, and more in addition to Adam. …. The cds become shelf decorations while I pine to see more live performances. Some of them ought to mainly sell DVDs of their live shows — that would be a much better representation of their talents than recording-studio work is. And Adam is rapidly becoming a leading member of this category for me.

This was a FANTASTIC performance. Boy, when I see him perform this, I don’t think “American Idol Contestant”. I think “Pop Star.” Love his look and the way he sang this song!!

I thought this was fun! But i don’t like it better than the cd version — I LOVE the cd version and all of the layering of the vocals etc. the live and cd versions are just 2 completely different animals

LMFAO, same here!!! I have Z-100 on all the time, and any time WWFM comes on, my entire family just rolls their eyes and try to leave the room really fast! So yes for the group rate on therapy, just not yet, this crazy ride is just so much fun!

tls62- I am getting the same thing from my daughters and they love Adam too. But what are you going to do with performances like this? Adam just sucks you in and keeps you there. This performance was so awesome and just epitomizes what makes Adam so special. Sexy, fun, gorgeous and awesome vocal ability plus great music. Love him!

My family is very sick of and makes fun of my American Idol/Adam obsession. I am grateful for MJ’s as an outlet, cause my family and friends are bored to tears when I discuss Adam or American Idol even though my husband is a fan to a much lesser degree. I loved getting to see Adam perform a different song than WWFM. It was very nice of Ellen to have him on again. I think she now will be my favorite judge.

Monte was with Madonna that day for the Haiti Relief show. Tommy did good though! Androgynous pixie elf came through and did Monte proud!

Seems Adam is getting quite a history with censoring… the underwear part has been edited out in some shows (or maybe they just didn’t like it)… there was one tv station that substituted his Oprah appearance with some old Oprah show as well when it aired.

i get the same thing..my husband and kids think i am completely out of my mind…not that they dont think hes great, they do. They just think i am obsessed and i am…and proud of it!!!! lol he is amazing to me!

Adam Lambert has GOT to be the single best live performer in the business today. To sound THAT good with no auto-tuner or remix is simply remarkable.

That one note where he went stratospheric gave me chills.

In all seriousness, and not trying to sound corny, Adam has made it so much fun to listen and watch music again that I could care less what family or friends think about by obsessive behavior. My husband and son think I’m crazy at times, but I see them sneaking a peek at Adam over the newspaper or laptop when he’s on TV. They enjoy watching me enjoying myself with my other obsessive friends so it’s all good, clean, healthy fun.

OMG! I can’t wait to see this on TV. Adam is awesome. I remember when some fans would say ” Adam isn’t an American Idol he’s a World Idol”. Well, I just found out that FYE went GOLD in Canada. Congratulations Adam!. This is only the beginning.

Love this live version…. Love his showmanship. Can’t wait for a live performance near me!

As a side note. I was in Las Vegas this weekend and heard Adam in three different locations. two casinos and one mall type area. Two WWFM and one FYE. yeah! I even had my husband on alert and notifying me when he heard Adam being played. He rolled his eyes when he told me, but he told me, lol. MAC (cosmetics) also has Adam’s FYE on a company CD playing at their counters.

That was perfect! Loved the looks, the song, the voice, the dancing. The hole performance was so filled with energy and joy. Totally fit for a birthday celebration.

Loved the vocals, the showmanship, the dance. Now Adam could never be accused of lip-synching this time, because he improvised so much. I actually think it’s a compliment that so many people thought Adam lip-synced to WWFM when he’s performed it on Oprah, Leno, etc. because he vocals are too good. The die-hard fans know better, because he tweaks it here and there, and different from the recording.

I could listen to Adam interview every day. The Virgin/Vancouver interview was another great one. The Canadian dj’s and vj’s are the best, and some of the funniest interviews that Adam has done.

That performance was actually his first one broadcasted that I would say was glam. Excellent!

And the underwear thing was hilarious. With the first clip I was like, “an autographed picture? Oh, okay”, but then came the underwear. And not even just autographed underwear, but actual, used, Adam’s DNA is in it -undewear. And now I’m starting to sound creepy. But there surely will be fans bidding big bucks for them! (But they can’t put them on eBay, eBay doesn’t allow selling used underwear. I think that Britney’s stage costume bra was a time ago supposed to auctioned for charity in eBay, but they didn’t allow it.)

And about if the underwear part was censored in some channels… It doesn’t matter. It wasn’t a part of his performance so it’s not about an artistic integrity. If a tv station is a touchy bout the idea of selling used underwear, so be it. And all the people who would be interested in bidding on them will know about them anyway.

Okay everybody……I caught the receptionist in the hallway and told her we were all waiting on the therapist in the lounge area. She told me we might as well all go home because the therapist hopped a plane for Canada yesterday to see Adam.

So back to square 1. I say we just continue the party in the lounge since we’re all comfortable already. As it turns out, the receptionist loves him too and she’s got wine in her desk, so she’s joining in.

BTW..no surprise Adam’s underwear was “a little sweaty” after that performance!! …and I wouldn’t be surprised if the audience had the same “sweaty” problem after watching him!!

Many people watching Ellen wouldn’t know Adam Lambert or about the cray crays, and might think it pretty self-absorbed to think anyone would want his underwear! The AI bubble and all that….

Ellen has special underwear that she hands out to her guest (evidently), so Adam is selling a signed version of Ellen’s underwear to benefit her charity work for Haiti, in addition to the picture. Why is it self-absorbed for Adam to think his fans would want to buy it any more than anyone other Idol or any other pop star who has a fanbase? It’s a silly thing, but funnier to own a pair of underwear rather than a picture.

As for donating them to sell? Totally common practice to donate something of yours, either your album, piece of clothing (like jackets or pirate pants) or guitar that you’ve signed, or whatever, for charity. The very idea is to ask your fans to donate on stuff to give to charity, so they will want to something relating to you, to own. That’s the whole point. No one other than an Adam fan is going to want to own a signed picture of ADam. And for Adam underwear was thrown at him by his fans, Ellen hands out underwear with her name on it, so having a pair of Ellen’s brand of underwear signed by him, is something they might want to bid on.

Plus, is it really right for him to exploit the cray crays?

I don’t think he’s explointing the crazies, other than there are the ones who will most likely bid the most on any item. And again, the point of any auction is to get people to spend money on it for charity. So giving someone an item that is a bit more unusual than just an autographed CD, will probably be more valued. Plus again, it’s sillier and funnier to own for a fan and as it’s Ellen brand underwear, it has a very specific time to it. Plus and most importantly…it’s for charity. So it’s all a bunch of silliness to raise money for a good cause.

Obviously mileage is varying, but I don’t see anything other than the typical stuff celebs to do raise money and trying to do so in a slightly silly/funny way.

The Ellen/underwear connection is long standing and the auction is funny and raises cash for charity- I don’t see an issue. He’s a good sport to go along with it and I’m sure the whole thing was vetted by a committee ahead of time.

LOL I love Adam for first, putting his crazy fans against each and as a result raising thousands for DonorsChoose, and now allowing them to bid for a professional framed photograph and his undies for Haiti.

Every artist knows a large chunk of their fanbase bids for stuff like that, people bid for crazy stuff like Britney’s used tissues. So I’m glad he’s getting the rich cray cray G-berts to spend their money on a needed cause instead.

it was a wonderful performance and the underwear thing was cute and funny and because he talked with her about them in the past I will bet. But – sigh – the cray cray dislikers of Adam now have grabbed onto it as something to be disgusted by – watch em run with it – sigh again -oh well – if thats all they can pick apart about this wonderful performance – let them have their fun too. Adam has something for everyone!

He tops himself (no, the phrase did not escape me!) every single time he does anything, and I love every minute of watching him sing, dance, talk, breathe…..I could even just watch him sleep and love it because I just know he would be adorable doing that as well. I can’t stop smiling. I just don’t know how he keeps getting better and better when he was already the best, but I think his confidence is growing every day. He knows we love him, and he knows he is appreciated. His Strut performance and his adorableness with Ellen were just too, too amazingly perfect and intoxicating. O.K., I am happy!

Thinking of the way he squats during the high notes, and quickly straightens up… like an agile cat!!!

Remember how he did those moves in Crawl Thru Fire?? Near the end, when he sings “yeah… yeah YEAH” and squats down and right up again…

One of the things I like the most about Adam is that he always looks like he is having so damned much fun up there. And those notes – geesh, pitch-perfect and effortless.

Oh and about the actual performance, yeah, bit a weird start, but it quickly got better. Looks like Adam was having a blast doing it, it seemed like a fun song and performance and I liked it vocally. Liked some of the change ups. Still not sold on his dancing, but mostly it was okay this time.

Overall though I thought the mood was fun and that was really conveyed by Adam from the song, vocally and his actions, so I think overall, he did a good job here with his performance.

agathe.hb, I am from Brasil, and heard Adam talking about coming here in interviews and on twitter. But us brazilian fans don’t want to get our hopes up. If he came here, I think I would die of happiness. That was the first time I have heard Strut…..not a fan. Not even up to the level of Kara’s previous work Open Toes (just kidding about that). I can’t imagine that is even being considered for a single so I don’t think it matters much, glad Ellen was happy haha…

So I just watched the episode on my dvr and they freaking censored the underwear bit! WTF!?!?!? I mean, really was that censor-worthy? I am just amazed and baffled at the reasoning behind it. Adam had strawberry blond hair as a youngster, and the last photos I’ve seen with his natural hair color, it was more a light reddish-brown. As many people know, hair becomes becomes darker and duller into adulthood, and even red hair becomes darker and more brown. Adam, in particular, never had the true, bright red hair. I’m guessing Adam’s hair is a duller reddish-brown now, and probably in about ten years, will lose most of the red. I have a friend who was a redhead as a youngster, and her hair is now completely brown (she is 38).

Well as has been noted several times earlier in this thread by myself, and others, the 15K is an inaccurate number by mj. The number is 15 hundred. And while that is a lot of money for a star’s underwear, it’s not nearly the same thing, in terms of being affordable. And as also noted on the last page, donating signed underwear for charity has been done by the likes of Daniel-Day Lewis, Emma Thompson and Tilda Swinton. So not just like it’s some Idol, or weird Adam thing to do.

But yes, the money is going to a great cause.

The Ellen underware may not have been censured so much as not being a permitted item in the auction ( I belive that is the case) so there is no point to showing it on tv at all.

But I think they mostly cut it because they realized that they can’t sell used undies on ebay, and so rather than promise “Adam-worn” undies, only to have people discover that they’re new and unused (scandalous!), they decided to cut mention of them entirely. Of course, that’s a bummer too because there may have been folks who would have gone to the website to check out the undies who weren’t necessarily interested in the picture.

Just watched Adam’s “Strut” !

Really great, great job!! Love the way he changes his songs around when he sings them live. And it shows off his strong lower register, which we hardly ever get to hear …

This is interesting….I am involved in live corporate business meetings for a living, and I was in Miami Beach 2 weeks ago doing a MAC Cosmetics show. They were discussing one there current ad campaigns which called Viva Glam featuring Lady Gaga & Cindy Lauper…they also mentioned that there may be involvement in the future with Adam Lambert, and showed one of his pictures from his CD(the one with the spikes on the shoulder), there was also applause from the makeup artists when this was announced. So don’t be surprised if in the future Adam does ad work for MAC..

OH YEAH…his performance was the BOMB!!!

Just wanted to add that the non showing of the Ellen undies was not because he showed the top of them [ already happened with Michael Johns ages ago & that wasn't censored] It would be because Adam alluded that the undies he was wearing would be auctioned for Haiti , which would be in bad taste!! Kanadie Bonttell – that’s awesome about MAC! I was really hoping that MAC would do something for their Viva Glam line and Adam would be perfect for that. Nice gig if he can get it!

I loved his Strut today. I’ve missed the wailing that I found so exciting on American Idol and the attitude was there!! He sounded a little out of breath toward the end of the song, and I’m wondering if he was just tired or is a bit out of shape after losing all that weight. He’ll have to work out before his tour!!

The only place the underwear thing was shown online, it wasn’t on TV in even the earliest showings. It’s silly to think it was somehow censored for bad taste or false advertising or some other made up reason, otherwise they would not have included it in the online clip either. Heck, it was shot last week on Thursday IIRC, so it’s not like there was some rush to broadcast.

Occam’s razor, I have no doubt the simplest explanation is the correct one — it was edited for time. The show was packed, you could see Ellen trying to subtly hurry Harry’s talking along toward the end of his segment.

BTW, my husband watched Adam’s performance of Strut with me and exclaimed “Wow!” during the scream. He liked it. It was all I could do to remain reasonably calm and collected during the performance, so as not to freak him out and give away that I had already been partying away over it with all of you all afternoon!

I know I can’t do justice to the explanation, but basically, the plexiglass keeps the drumming sound from flying all over the place. The sound comes through better. Just as and speakers are directed towards the audience, the plexi works in the same way. When you record, you aren’t in a big open room, but in a more contained area.

I really don’t know and am just taking a stab in the dark here that it suppresses or somewhat mutes the sound of the drums so they don’t overwhelm the rest of the instruments in the band.

Strut was great, the guy does know how to have a good time I love the chemistry he has with his band, especially when he interacts with them and how they feed off eachother. Loved watching Tommy play guitar today.

I am loving the sound of his voice at the 3:02 point, in the underwear version of the video, when he sings, “I…I..don’t wanna be” and the sound of his “yeah…yeahs “at the end of the song. I just melt over his incredible voice!!!

Just a fantastic performance.

Basically, what the others have said.

It’s to isolate the sound of the drums. The drums are loud and deep, so they tend to bleed into all the others mic’s on the stage. By putting the drummer in a plexi-glass cage, you can get the drum sounds just coming from the drum. Then you can mix the sounds from each of the mic’s as you like it. It just makes for cleaner (and hopefully, better) sound mixing.

I loved his Strut today. I’ve missed the wailing that I found so exciting on American Idol and the attitude was there!! He sounded a little out of breath toward the end of the song, and I’m wondering if he was just tired or is a bit out of shape after losing all that weight. He’ll have to work out before his tour!!

I’ve missed that wail and love it! It’s so great. I think he might have been a bit winded from all the dancing and dropping down. You’ve gotta have some strong thigh muscles for that, lol….

Revcat I think this is why I prefer Adam’s “slower” performances on television as I think you are right – performances like this Strut would be much better on stage than TV [IMO].

I’ve said this before, but I think part of the problem is that he is technically performing for 2 kinds of audiences in these televised settings – the live one, and the camera. So he wants to “perform” for both, but it requires a different dynamic and different energy focus/intensity, etc. I can only imagine how tricky that must be to juggle.

I think he tends to be aware of BOTH audiences more keenly than a lot of other stage performers, and I think his desire to emote more for the live audience is what can be more jarring when the camera is there. JMO.

I thought Adam’s performance on Ellen was fantastic! That type of campy, fun performance is what makes Adam – Adam. He had a great time and that, for me, translates into the viewing audience having a great time.

I thought the camera did a great job capturing the performance.

I so enjoy that Adam takes a song and molds his performance to meet the energy of that song. He is not only a great vocalist, he truly is a wonderful performer.

Adam is going back up on Amazon, he was in the 20′s, now he is 18 with a green arrow going up. Thank you Ellen.

I said it last night and I’ll say it again: THAT WAS HIS BEST PERFORMANCE ON TV SINCE IDOL. PERIOD.

Campy shmampy. Honestly- until he goes out there with his Crawl thru fire wardrobe and make-up, with the crazy over-the-top screaming, he will seem restrained and sweet to me.
And if he does go full out- I say BRING IT ON BABY! There’s no else (who is known to me, of course) who can pull it off, but Adam can!

Strut was amazing, but I knew it would be. I didn’t think it would be a good choice for a second single. Now, I’m thinking it could work. That guitar riff and the “solo-solo, don’t wanna be solo” hook has been running through my head all day.
I’m glad I’m not in charge of selecting the next single because my favorite song changes every few days.

Alright- I’m glad we’re all happy! I just woke up (after last nights party on the couch) to find prople discussing how he still needs to learn how to differentiate between stage and camera and I just had to protest!!!
LOL- I think it’s great to see someone put so much energy and sillyness and fun sexuality and high notes and funny moves and funny faces…

That was better than the little teaser clip led me to believe it would be. Yay!

Nonetheless, I have some criticisms:

–He needs a choreographer. The dancing is cute, but I def. cringed at some of it. If he wants to cultivate a sexy image, this dancing doesn’t cut it.

–His voice has this ~nasally quality about it lately. I don’t know if nasally is the right word, but it’s the same tone as he had on say, the BTBW Idol performance. I don’t like it.

I am getting a feeling that Adam maybe still too hot a potato for Daytime Live TV. Though I believe that it was a joke (funny, too), but he gave me the impression that he is donating the underwear he was wearing! I think it is a bit too sexual for daytime TV. If he said “I am signing a matching pair just like mine here to donate it. This one is too sweaty”, that would have been fine, even though I would have mentally pictured sweaty underwear on him… (I have to slap myself now.)

Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig donated the undershirts they were wearing during the performance of Steady Rain. (Autographed, and also you can meet them in backstage to take picture with them, too.) Audience bit on them after the show, and they raised whopping $11,000 between the two. I saw nothing wrong with it because a) It was in theater with paid audience only 2) it was not on network TV during daytime, and 3) it was underSHIRT, not underwear. [They did take off jacket and shirt to show the undershirts.]

I am really socially liberal, yet still notion of selling/giving used underwear for even a good cause is a bit too much. ( Borderline creepy when I wonder what the buyer would do to it.) I am not sure why it is different from his, say, used socks, kissed towel, or a photo of a lady in Victoria’s secret. I have no problem with those. Boy, I am finding out my strange and illogical sensitiveness. What if he actually donated the used one after a closed concert for a charity??? Am I OK with that? Hmmm….

I just missed his spark so much! Seriously, I don’t think he’s been this uninhibited (while being ON KEY, ehem ehem…) on TV ever since Born to be Wild (and to a lesser extent- WWL) on idol- and it was so frustrating! I mean, I like WWFM well enough, but it’s not very exciting, is it??

He finally looked and sounded like a real rock star again!! And I’ll bet he won over some new fans with it, as well!
And I emphasize- I’m talking about appearences on TV- because I saw him live over the summer and he was UNBELIEVABLE! And it seem he was fantastic at Gridlock as well- but the sound was so horrible- and only fans saw it… so this was the first time in a long time that he actually unleashed his charismatic, sexy, rockstar crazy vocalled self on national (and internatinal) TV, with all that exposure!

On a different topic- I was also waiting for a real present, and was kind of “WTF?” when he gave her a picture of himself wrapped in a ribbon to auction off… I love Adam, but I admit that was kinda awkward… lol… But- as long as it’s going for a good cause- so be it!

Adam looked like he had a blast. I will say he seems to lose his breath when singing the faster songs while dancing around. That’s usually when he goes for the lower notes. I don’t think this was his best perfomance since Idol but it is the one he seemed to have the most fun doing.

I really loved his strutting around the stage though! HAHA. He knows how to entertain, that’s for sure.

You know- about the beginning of the song, that some people thought sounded funny?
Well, I think he was just trying to make an effect with his voice instead of the distortion his voice actually has in the recording (in the recording his vocals have this distorted special effect, kind of like the one Matt Bellamy from Muse has in many recordings…) and so it came out a little funny…
Mind you- I found every aspect of this performance delightful, including the voice in the beginning, including the dancing, including the faces and ofcourse- those crazy vocals!

Just weighing in on the Ellen appearance: Wow, this is what I expected to see from Adam after the Idol season ended. I think this was superior to the previous two singles. This showcases his voice and his theatricality. He was very hot here without being ott or vulgar. I think this song would have been awesome to perform at the AMAs. I think they botched his rolling out by going with FYE, and even WWFM, while okay, is not the greatness that Adam promised by his Idol performances. This, to me, was exciting. Though it’s not my cup of tea, I don’t listen to this kind of music, it was an exciting performance, expecially vocally. So, just the opinion of a non-fan.

ETA: One thing I could add, he’s a bit too focused on sexuality for me (the repetitive pelvic gyrating) and that makes me uncomfortable, but I know a lot of singers do similar. I like things more subtle, like sexy eyes, sexy looks to the camera, sexy holding of the mic, a hot pair of blue jeans, etc. Overt sexuality on tv is embarrassing to me, but other than that aspect, it was an exciting performance. This is just a personal preference so don’t jump on me. BTW this applies to hetero singers too (like Jim Morrison) so don’t jump to the conclusion that this is because Adam is gay. I have no problem with that, in fact I love gay guys for the most part. I’m one who doesn’t like crotch-grabbing etc. I hope I’ve added enough disclaimers to permit me to express my opinion on this thread, thanks.

And I also agree with alot of what you said- this is the performance I’ve been waiting for as well! Even though Strut wasn’t one of my favs, it still has that rock vibe going on, that I admit I’ve missed in Adam for a while… I mean. I do like the fact that he’s diverse, and I love dancing to all of his songs, including the more electro-dancy ones- but in live performances? I preffer rock over anything- and especially since he sounds so awesome doing it!

And I do like the gyrations, but dislike crotch-grabbing (I hated seeing Michael Jackson crotch-grab… but MJ was a whole different creature- and he seemed so a-sexual to me, that any display of sexuality on his part seemed really wierd and kind of embaressing to me… but I digress)… glad Adam doesn’t grab his crotch too much. I think he only did it at he AMA’s, no? And I keep thinking he kind of lost his marbles on that one anyway… the bad vocals was the sign he was in some sort of distress, for me.

Just got to watch my taping of Ellen. Loved Adam’s performance. He looked like he was having a ball up there. I love to see our BB having fun. Adam knows exactly what to give to a song. Sexuality to For Your Entertainment, lots of emotion for WWFM and fun to strut.

I just watched the video of Adam performing STRUT right here on MJ’s Blog. To me he sounded, looked, amd danced spectacularly. If he looked too theatrical, well, he was performing on a stage in front of an audience. (Oh, to be in that audience.) I love the underwear part, but they cut it on my TV channel in the east. Glad you showed it here. Adam is so refreshing in many ways. I wish him all the success in the world.

The more I hear Strut, the more I don’t think it would work well as a new single. Adam’s performance level really made that song, and, while I love it on my cd, I think it is not QUITE hooky enough to make it to pop radio. In fact, I think the bridge Adam came up with may be the best part of the song – LOVE it, lyrics, melody – all building to that climax!

If I were to rank next singles, I would either go with Fever or Sleepwalker – the latter may be too much like WWFM, and the former I would definitely do as a Gaga duet to get it pushed REALLY easily to radio (they will eat it up if she’s on there with him) – I know the idea is sorta controversial, but I’m still all for it
