Adam Lambert Debuts at #3 on the Billboard 200, Susan Boyle at #1

As a fan of Idol show, it disappoints to see UK reality show star at #1, while domestic reality show star can’t even sell 200K.

Happy with those numbers… the most important thing is that Adam’s #s are higher than Miley. I would have died a little inside if that hadn’t happened. LOL

Damn SuBo is a MONSTER! 701K? That’s bananas.

Oh and congrats to Carrie. Another excellent week for her, and a few weeks out. Her drop, or lack thereof, is impressive.

Congrats to Adam and Carrie! I think nearly 200K sold for Adam is terrific, considering, as you say, the competition (he beat out Rhianna, despite her getting an A- review from EW, I believe, and GaGa! Shocked!). And Carrie’s album and single are doing really well. I said this earlier today, but I thought Adam looked sad on Ellen yesterday, and I hope this really makes him feel that he had a very successful week, with more success to come. Hopefully, we can leave the AMAs and GMA behind, get back to his music (the single Music Again, as well WWFM, have taken on additional significance this past week).

People said SuBo would do well, but this is insane! Let’s see if she is a flash in the pan or continues to sell well in the future.

Wow at SuBo! Just Wow! That is indeed an accomplishment! Seeing how well Carrie is doing is another wow too! I wouldn’t be surprised if Carrre ended up with platinum sales by the end of the year at the rate she is currently selling.

My thoughts exactly MJ but being you have been involved with this sales numbers and chart position thing much longer then me, and this is your blog, it validates (for me) the happiness I feel with these impressive numbers by Adam. The only track I have of hers is Jesus Take the Wheel. I love her singing in that song, and no I’m not particularly religious.

I can’t stand that song Cowboy Casanova and I wish she would stop losing weight, I know none of my business, but she’s starting to look like a scarecrow. Same with Lady Gaga.

Regarding the Ellen show and looking a little sad, I think in looking back and sharing what his dad said to him after the AMA’s, “Adam, maybe you should apologize”, and also how ABC had faith that he would close the show as planned, has touched his soul with some remorse, as we all know he is a good guy. It really was a learning experience that had to do in looking at the whole picture with integrity and separating out the high emotions from living in the moment and becoming a little defensive to giving more loving, honest assessment of the experience itself and going from there. I was glad to see that the essence of Adam is still alive and well. Love him.

She co-wrote 4 songs on her sophomore album, including 3 of the singles: So Small, All-American Girl and Last Name.

She had one co-write on her debut album.

An article in the most recent edition of Country Aircheck Weekly, an industry magazine, mentioned that radio pays around $1 million in royalties for a #1 country song. Considering that 4 of Carrie’s co-writes reached #1, methinks she’s not doing too shabby when it comes to even mechanical royalties for singles alone.

Yep, dab1234. I wanted to cry last night (okay, I did). I watched his interview a few times, and he just looked sadder and sadder as it went on, especially when Ellen mentioned his dad and he said that he had suggested Adam apologize (we already know from CBS Morning Show that his mom had been shocked about his performance). I don’t know if Adam had pressure from RCA/19 to back down or he made that call, but he definitely seemed defeated and even tweeted Ellen to thank her for her support. So this news (Billboard tweeted it to him and he has received a lot of congrats since) must have made him feel terrific. I think the PR will help–can’t wait to see what he does on Vevo–but I really do hope people can start really focusing on his music again (heh). And to me, 198K is certainly close enough to 200K, and with WWFM picking up a number of radio adds this week, the album should remain viable for a while.

I love me some Jim. He has been so supportive of the Idols, especially Kradison (lots of Allison tweets the past day, and he is still sick), and that makes me happy.

SuBo is a phenomenon the likes of which we’ll never see, again. I don’t think even Simon Cowell saw this coming. There’s no marketing plan in the world that could have done this, which makes it all the more impressive. Good for her! It’s nice to see a fairytale finish to her story.

Hardly anybody, in many cases.

But people who get to gold or platinum from their less-than-huge AI starts do it with repeated exposure of their music to audiences beyond idol (or to idol people who weren’t convinced to buy in the first go-round, also, I guess.) Radio play, tours, tv and movie appearances, and other stuff have attracted extra fans to lots of idols.

But going platinum and even going gold are a much rarer occurrence today in the music industry overall, too, especially in youth-oriented genres like pop, where a lot of idols are located. There, you probably have to be like Jordin and have a good long string of high-charting radio singles. …. And it’s not clear that that will work any more, either.

Basically, you’ve gotta catch lightning in a bottle. … Somehow.

No.. Adam is the 19th highest seller in 2009, but there are still a few weeks to go in 2009. I will say that it is pretty crowded (and a long list) below him. Someone posted a Sales Chart for 2009 on IDF. It was amazing to see big names with low sales. The music industry seriously took a hit this year.

I am pretty sure he got pressure from RCA. The noted change in his attire for Ellen indicated to me that someone is ‘suggesting’ how he gets out of this. Sad, but whatever works. At the end when they hugged each other I felt that Adam was ‘hanging on to her for support’. He has shown he can be quite emotional (Come Home and I Can’t Make you Love Me). I think that was the point he was at right at the end of the interview. Just hope that was the beginning of his bounce back to being himself.

Boyle’s numbers are not incomprehensible. There has always been a market for her kind of music. Neil Diamond had a high debut recently. Barbra Streisand still debuts very high with her releases. The market for pop standards will never go away.

I’m sure it is a little of RCA, but from his interviews.. he repeatably states that he is hardest on himself. After a week, he probably sees things differently. I know he caught alot of heat for sounding defensive, but personally I think it was a natural reaction. Sometimes we forget that these guys (kris, danny and allison) are just people that can have gut reactions. None the less.. this too shall pass.

On a different note, does anyone know if the nominations have been announced? We are hoping that David Cook gets a nomination. He had a fantastic year in album sales and platinum awards. It was very disappointing to us Archie fans that he was overlooked in the AMA and the music video awards! There seemed to be a lot of buzz for AI 8 and in all fairness David Cook (AI7) had an incredible year! David would be so happy for him! So what makes our David happy – makes us happy! Yes, mmb, Adam and SuBo are the only two new artists in the top 20 first week sales for 2009. The rest are established artists.

And only 19 other artists period had higher debuts this year.

This means Adam Lambert had the highest ranking debut for any new Pop artist in 2009.

No other new Pop artist releasing an album in 2009 debuted higher.

Adam’s debut, placed into the current market conditions perspective, is spectacular. No other brand new Pop artist did better their first week.

Hey Lucy, don’t be too sure your mom is an exception to the rule. I have a dear that is in her 70′s and is a die-hard fan/supporter of Adam’s. She collects his pictures and went to the A.I. concert in Portland! His music transcends gender, and age confindes. Like his music, his audiences are varied. Not too shabby to come in #2 as a new aritist and #3 against the top ten heavy weights after so much negetive response to his AMA performance. I myself, am proud of him for taking the “punch” and trying to move on in the right direction. Those that love and support him will cheer him on and those that are his detractors will continue to try and bury him. He’s strong, he’s smart, he will endure this (probably won’t be the last time he will be heavily criticized for one thing or another) but he will survive and do well. Adam, we have your back covered! :0)

I feel sorry for Adam. I followed him from AI and saw him on the tour. I was just so shocked at his performance on AI and just can’t get beyond it. Have not bought his CD even though I had planned to do so. The angry look on his face at the end of the performance along with the finger at the audience and camera was so OTT. I was not bothered at all by the kiss, but pulling the dancer to his crotch and his gyrations bothered me. I am not homophobic or a fanatic Christian, so don’t call me names. His face looked strange too, rather reddish and puffy. Made me wonder if he went back to using cocaine which he said he used in 2006. He said he would never use cocaine again because of how it effected him for days after. Something was so different about hm. Just can’t figure it out. It seems that some followers of Adam overlook anything bad. That is what gets some celebrities in trouble. The fans just don’t call them out on the bizarre things they sometimes do. I just don’t think the Adam we saw on AI is the real Adam. He said himself when he decided to go on AI he planned to be nice and responsible. Something has definitely changed about him. Yes, he kind of seemed like the old Adam on Ellen, but who is the real Adam anyway. The guy on the AMAs or the guy on Ellen. I am praying it is not drugs again and if so, hope his family and friends will intervene.

My friend bought Take One and FYE from Amazon, she doesn’t live in US and she doesn’t follow everynews about Adam, but she really likes his voice and performance from AI so she just bought both albums. She has no idea whatsoever that the ‘first’ album is not really Adam’s album…

pat, I think Adam wanted to go big (nothing to do w/ drugs or anything other than a “moment”). He took the lyrics to the song literally (personally, I do not think that was a good first choice for a single), and admits he got caught up in the moment, especially after watching GaGa. RCA is now putting out WWFM as his current single, I believe. If you look at him on Ellen, he was extremely articulate (same w/ his interview on the Morning Show). I think it was a learning moment, nothing more, and if ppl decide not to buy his album based on the AMAs, that is, IMO, unfortunate but certainly has and will happen.

The hug was great but he one arm hugged her at first and didn’t add the second arm until she started hugging for so long. I think Adam is fine emotionally about the whole AMA thing. He knows he may have mistepped but he is owning it and I love that about him.

Since they added the Kimmel appearance and concert after the AMA mess, I really doubt this concert will be cancelled. Anyway, it won’t be live so ABC should have no problem with it.

I like the idea of humble Adam than mournful/sorrowful Adam. I kind of saw both, honestly. He dressed about as low-key as I’ve ever seen in an interview (and looked attractive, BTW, but seems to be getting *very* thin). He sounded terrific on stage with his band; their chemistry grows with every performance (he already had one with Monte Pittman, his band mate in Citizen Vein). I expect the album to continue to sell well. As for Take One…no, thanks.

Sorry I didn’t see the finger on tv. Mine must have been edited out or something. I saw a picture of it but not in the performance. Cocaine doesn’t cause you to get red and puffy in the face-lol. But, if one performance causes you to not buy his album, 200,000 other people took up the slack.

My interpretation of his attire was to keep it as close to what he wore on Idol as possible. If that’s how tv audiences remember him, so be it’ ¦for now. It’s easy to forget that not everyone saw him on tour or frequents YouTube. (Seeing him on tour 3 times was just so much fun for me.) Actually, I thought his tie on “Ellen” might be the one he wore on the AMAs, but not sure. I’m confident Adam’s going to be just fine. I have twenty-something-year-old offspring and they are resilient. So is he. No sadz for him today, only joy for all his accomplishments.

Like Adam said, I think the adrenaline got the best of him. His compared AMA performance to the Idol Black and White performance which was “angry” too.

No, he’s admitted he made poor judgment and spoke at length to anyone that will listen. He sat in the audience a long time before he performed on the AMA’s and they kept building up his performance. The pressure must have been immense.

I”m think most decent people will give him a break on this one. But, I still think his sales numbers are very disappointing. I would have expected him to have matched Cook’s at the very least. I don’t see him selling a lot this week which could mean trouble. At least Kris is getting out there singing at the concerts and radio is playing his song. I think Adam is in trouble, and for that I feel really bad for him.

LOL…Manilow worked with Bette Midler in the early days – talk about OTT! Love you, Barry, for saying ‘I don’t give a shit’ ¦care. I just wanted him to sing a great song.’ 

The hug was great but he one arm hugged her at first and didn’t add the second arm until she started hugging for so long. I think Adam is fine emotionally about the whole AMA thing. He knows he may have mistepped but he is owning it and I love that about him.

Yeah, I’m not getting the “sad” Adam on Ellen thing myself. He did seem very much at peace with everything, calm, articulate, humble, yes, and smart. Nothing sad or defeated about it at all imo.

And I agree about the hug – I saw Ellen hanging on to him longer, and Adam then returning the favor – great moment, with her just showing him more love and support (which was echoed in her comments earlier on the show, about how he was so talented and deserved all the success, despite any momentary “scandals”, etc.)

I’m so friggin’ happy for Adam today! And want to thank him for giving us an incredible CD to listen to. Bravo!

I don’t see how anyone could characterize Adam’s career as being in “trouble”. He is the second biggest debut artist of the year, he has sold over 200K albums, he is #3 on the BB chart,he is in the top 20 of first week sales for the year, he has probably sold around 200K combined of his various new singles (TfM,FYE,WWFM)over a relatively short period,WWFM is being well received by radio and got 30 some odd adds this week; FYE continues to get at least some radio play and has a great video;he has been on letterman, ellen, the early show and soon conan and kimmel, he will be on Rockin NY eve (hopefully), he is on magazine covers, tv shows etc. Any recording artist today would be more than happy to be in such trouble!

pat: Though some on the board may not agree with you, your statements were heartfelt and sincere and I am sure a lot of others who don’t post or don’t read here would agree with you.

We all know the music business is dog eat dog and offending a lot of people straight out of the AI gate was not a good business model. Pat wasn’t the only one offended, there were many. I personally wasn’t offended, but neither did I like it. IMHO Adam can still be sexy as hell without the extra theatrics so it’s fine with me as long as his spirit remains intact.

Like it or not, being a gay male is one of the last taboos. When I was growing up it was considered very wrong to have sex out of marriage, have a baby out of wedlock, get divorced and live with or even vacation with your lover before marriage, and nobody ever even thought about singing I Kissed a Girl and I Liked It. All of these “taboos” have gone by the wayside. The
religious people who make it their own personal crusade to fight “sin” in an effort to “save America” are doing their best to make sure this last “taboo” remains just that. They honestly think the fate of the country is at stake. And they were none too happy about an openly gay man being appointed to high office at ABC. They were watching this particular executive for signs of being “too gay friendly” – just waiting to pounce and pounce they did. Adam just happened to be the bait.

Thanks…but I literally JUST checked AO (12:33 CST) and it’s not listed. Very strange and a little worrisome.

I found the phone number for the website selling the Kimmel tickets and I’m going to call them this afternoon and see what they can tell me.

love Bette in her day, I remember when she first ‘flashed’ her audience and she only became a bigger star after that!

No need to panic for all of you ticket holders – I highly doubt Adam booked and then un-booked Kimmel in a single day, all the while Kimmel’s site was happily selling tickets LOL.

My supervisor (not an Adam fan, loves Carrie) came over to tell me how “poorly” Adam had done this week (distant second to SuBo, what did Carrie’s first album sell, blah blah blah). I said for him to worry about it. If Adam only sells a few thousand copies this coming week, then worry. I think his appearances on Ellen and other network programs will also help a lot. But I agree w/ others: the climate is different than it was when Carrie won (why he was comparing them is beyond me, anyway)–we are in a recession–and if Adam could do this well after a “debacle” (not my term, others) on the AMAs, then look how well he’ll do in a calmer week!

I still contend that it is about the music, and I hope people give the album a chance (well, he sold 198K, so I guess *some* people did!). I think that the singles will help the album sales, b/c TfM, FYE, and WWFM are so diverse that it would not surprise me if someone heard at least two of these and was curious about what Adam had included on the album. It really reflects Adam’s MO on Idol, and that is what is so intriguing. Some critics (e.g., Rolling Stone) said he had too many collaborators and not enough cohesiveness. I disagree–there are so many different kinds of genres b/c he and his fans like that he can sing them. The Boston Globe said that Allison’s album didn’t sound as if songs had been thrown against the wall to see if any would stick. Again, I disagree (same implication as RS). They are just different kinds of albums, as is Kris’s. They all work for different reasons.

This one has given my husband and I endless entertainment. We’ve got a bet going on which club Tiger’s wife actually used to beat the shit out of his car. We’re pretty disappointed that no one has found out yet.

Although at first, my son was despondent that Tiger may have been seriously injured in the “car accident”. It’s been hard to reassure him that he’s fine, plus avoid having him hear any of the juicy details. He’s only 8 and Tiger is his #2 hero (second only to Tim Tebow of course).

It’s not what we’ve come to expect from somebody right off of American Idol, and thus, I guess, the consternation — but in the entertainment industry — and the arts — generally, offending a lot of folks from the start and over and over again has quite effectively put a good roof over the heads of many entertainers.

I am thrilled with Adam’s numbers! #3 debut on Billboard 200, 198+K units sold, and high ratings everytime he shows up on TV.

And FYE is still selling — current chart rankings:

Amazon US: CD #13 headed up MP3 #24 headed down
iTunes Delux: #38 music #9 pop
iTunes Regular: #50 music #12 pop

The album in selling in other countries: debuted #8 in New Zealand, #87 UK.

The biggest surprises to me are the high % of CD’s vs. digital and the Walmart numbers. With only 38K digital — 19% of total sales — it was not 100,000 $3.99/$0.99 Amazon downloads. Plus for week 1 over 25% of units sold in Walmart — that is the biggest surprise to me.

Finally, all of this is a good sign that when Adam fianlly tours that he will have good concert revenue numbers and that his upcoming merchandising has a good shot of making significant money. And that is where the biggest revenue opportunities are.

When Barbara met Adam to interview him for her “Ten Most Fascinating People of 2009″, she asked him to go on The View. It’s up to his people.

When Adam was skyped on Oprah’s show for about five minutes, she asked him three times if he was going on her show when his album comes out. She is definitely interested, so it is a matter of logistics.

Lady Gaga performed “Bad Romance” on Leno and then had a short sit down interview a week or two ago. If you watch the video, you’ll see that she almost had a costume malfunction.

I’m curious as to why Archuleta’s sales numbers haven’t been showing on HDD. Last week, he sold 18,000 and should have been #36 on HDD’s list but wasn’t. And now this week, Archuleta sold 21,000, and that would have put him and #49 on HDD’s list, but again, they didn’t show him there. Could he have accidentally been dropped from their data base?? Just wondered why he’s missing 2 weeks in a row when he should have been on that partiular list (the building sales one on HDD)

Well, if he drops as I expect this week — by 75 to 80 percent, since last week included the black friday bump — he’ll still be nearly halfway to gold by the end of it. …. If you can get halfway to gold in two weeks, then several months of chugging can almost certainly get you there.

And if the radio adds turn into actual radio *play* then I think the gold is more or less assured, and sooner rather than later ….

I honestly don’t think *anybody’s* guaranteed platinum in the current environment, though, and while I believe that Adam has the goods to be quite popular with a nice swath of the American public, I believe that he may really be a bit of a niche product, so it all depends on how big or small that niche is. … His having lost the idol vote suggests that it may not be all that huge, to me.

However, he’s getting pretty high numbers and a lot of attention in numerous countries around the world, too — when his album hasn’t been specifically promoted abroad much and isn’t available except as a download or an import — so he ought to be able to sell at least moderate numbers in *many* places, and they seem to be preparing for a pretty substantial rollout abroad next year. So I think he’ll absolutely get his million sales — but they’ll probably be spread out in different countries.

I know that when I’ve said this before here a lot of people tell me that those international sales aren’t nearly as important as sales in the U.S., which is the market that everybody in the world covets and cares about! But, frankly, if I were a musician, I’d be more than happy to have a million people buying my album, no matter where they lived!

Q3 do you have the numbers for the CBS Early Show when he appeared. Did they have a boost in ratings because he was on it?

The numbers for friends and twitter followers and viewers of Youtube videos, etc., are for most people way way higher than their album sales. I think a lot of those people are illegally downloading and filesharing or are following celebrities more for fame buzz and controversy or something than for music.

Yep, exactly that, and I was kidding. I guess I don’t kid well. (Well, I mean, we don’t celebrate it–Adam has said that–but…I bet he’ll be busy that whole time!)

I have a theory for why Kris’ album isn’t selling very well. Perhaps the era of pop-rock singer-songwritters is fading a bit. John Meyer just made the list of biggest drops on the Billboard album chart from #1 [Source: Pulse Music Board]. This is the kind of thing that often happens when a genre is weak and only core fans are buying — like rock and Bon Jovi’s “The Circle” which had a similar drop a couple of weeks ago.

What a great sale week!

This has been a dreary sale year for music — but for Thanksgiving week — in large part due to SuBo — music sales were actually up.

SuBo, Bocelli, GaGa, Rihanna and Adam are all still selling — SuBo and Bocelli are particurly strong — so this week could be a good week too and Adam should become half-golden this week [over 250K total]. SuBo might hit 5 million total which is unbelievable.

The final week of the this year, w/o 12/21 includes a Friday Christmas — which is about as good as the calendar gets for this critical sales week. Usually album sales are strong on Christmas week and with a 2-day Post-Christmas sale weekend it should be a really great week.

Finally, SuBo has sold over 3 million worldwide her first week and is shattering almost every sales record from the past 20 years — and is not slowing down much. I think this may be a one-record wonder [like Peter Frampton] but better to see someone with some talent and a good story make it big — rather than Octomom, John and Kate, or Heidi Montag. Wonder if she will hire a chef for her cats!

I think this quote was probably misread.

It says: Jews, like Adam and me, don’t know what to do between the 19th and the 31st. [week when gentiles are celebrating Christmas]. Then the person goes on to say: that Adam knows what to do. The poster just has to work.

…all of this is a good sign that when Adam fianlly tours that he will have good concert revenue numbers and that his upcoming merchandising has a good shot of making significant money.

Regarding the Barry Manilow discussion with Joy (The View) he is right. What was missing from the AMA performance was Adam’s voice. People are focusing too much on the performance aspect of it.

I am very happy with Adam’s record numbers! It makes me feel great to know that so many people are enjoying the same awesome music that I am! I can’t wait for Adam’s tour. I love the album, and I will love seeing him perform his music live!

Well, that’s cool! I wonder who will win: FYE or WWFM. That is, a million copies have to be shipped to retailers, and then the retailers have to sell enough of those to customers for them to be sure that they’re not going to return any of the ones they ordered from teh record label. Once that’s happened, the label can ask to have the album certified platinum, even if not quite a million consumers have taken those copies home yet.

I was just at Adam’s facebook page. He has 371,187 fans on fb. That means 171,187 people who have bothered to ‘friend’  him haven’t bought the album yet!

Well I know for a fact that on adamofficial the date listed for Jimmy Kimmel was Dec. 17. I saw it with my two eyes. Now it’s gone! I have a feeling it was canceled just like NYE concert with Ryan will be because it’s airing on ABC. Fuck you ABC!!!!

I have a theory for why Kris’ album isn’t selling very well. Perhaps the era of pop-rock singer-songwritters is fading a bit. John Meyer just made the list of biggest drops on the Billboard album chart from #1 [Source: Pulse Music Board]. This is the kind of thing that often happens when a genre is weak and only core fans are buying ‘” like rock and Bon Jovi’s ‘The Circle’  which had a similar drop a couple of weeks ago.

Nice theory, but most of the initial sales of Kris can be predicted solely based on the size of his idol fanbase. He needs to reach outside of his idol fanbase to do well – he needs some more radioplay and promotion to do that. John Mayer’s album isn’t very good IMO (I only like a couple of the songs I heard from the album), which might be a better explanation of why it isn’t doing as well.

We were just talking about the many famous Jews who have made successful Christmas albums last night, including Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Kenny G., Bette Midler and now Bob Dylan. Some, like Babs and Art Garfunkel, have even recorded religious Christmas songs. Add to that the number of Jews who have written Christmas tunes ( Mel Torme, “The Christmas Song”, Irving Berlin, “White Christmas”, Johnny Marks, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”) and you have a lot of people who follow the Jewish religion who stay busy around the holiday, even if its for a year or so to promote their work.

Jimmy Kimmel is still selling tickets. I think it is still on.

I think that was before Kris came in at 80k – and the above predcition comes from HDD, not Jive. I dont think Allison is getting near that 75k prediction.

I couldn’t agree more. I don’t really care what he does if his voice sounds amazing. My supervisor (who is gay) told me the same thing: he wasn’t offended in the slightest by the performance, but felt that it was so busy that it affected Adam’s vocals. I think that, coupled with nerves (and maybe the acoustics, but only a bit) was what caused Adam to sound pitchy and off-key. Adam admitted this on Ellen yesterday. He was 100 percent candid, and I appreciated that.

4evrmomof4, That reviewer thought Pick U Up was a throw-away. I actually like it quite a bit. But then again, the only songs I don’t really like are Music Again and Sure Fire Winners, which are more glammy (oh, and Down the Rabbit Hole–I really don’t like that one, but I love Master Plan and my favorite is also Broken Open).

Yes, this was based on the comment about no Adam news during the middle of December, and ppl kidding that it was Christmas time:

Sometimes “jokes” don’t translate.

Anyway…I don’t think I have ever seen Adam look better (well, emo awesome) than he did on Ellen (and I compare that to Letterman, where he wasn’t amazing, and The Early Show, where he was very good). The more he and the band performer, the tighter they will become, and the more familiar he becomes with the song, which he didn’t write, the better and better it will sound, with him throwing in vocal nuances (which I catch, b/c I watch the performances over and over and also compare them to the album). He and Monte already had a rapport, but he and Tommy seem to be developing a nice one as well (Tommy’s tweets are pretty amusing). But I think WWFM also sounds great on the album, it just resonates more in performance.

BTW, remember the interview on the Red Carpet for 2012 where the woman said something about him recording Christmas songs and he said, But I’m Jewish! And then he laughed.

Well, I’ve only bought the regular iTunes album (no deluxe version available to me ) And I’m waiting to see if they maybe perhaps will make the collector’s edition available in my country as well (as they sort of promised!).

I just got off the phone with someone at http://www.1iota.com who is giving away the tickets for Jimmy Kimmel. He was surprised that I thought it might have been cancelled and he’s in charge of putting these things on their website. Anyway, he said this has been on the books for sometime and he has NOT been contacted about it being cancelled. I told him we were concerned about the ABC/AMA thing causing it to possibly be cancelled and he said he really didn’t think so, but he said let’s see what the next week brings. If it is cancelled, they (1iota) will send out an e-mail. In other words, it’s still a wait and see situation – at least IMO. ABC could just be getting around to figuring out everything Adam is scheduled for on their network and trying to figure out what to do. Wish there was someone at ABC to contact re: this and New Year’s Eve! Anyone have a phone number for ABC?

If ABC cancels Adam’s appearance on Kimmel, it would be a bit odd at this point. They did cancel GMA, but then they obviously approved the Barbara Walters’ special, which was taped after the AMAs. Kimmel is shown in the late night TV daypart (children will be protected!) and ABC can extract stronger terms from Adam (no FYE for sure!). I think it would be unlikely for ABC to cancel if they thought Adam will bring them ratings, but then again Adam’s career hasn’t exactly followed a predictable path so far.

i don’t think they do much directly — not enough people attend. But they will shore up his relationship with radio stations, which then may play him more. And if he gets solid radio play, that *will* help his sales.

ABC and Adam…..GMA was a little slap on the wrist to Adam and a nice way for them to appease whomever got a burr under their saddle and let ABC know (and I’m talking about deep pockets here, not viewers). I think if ABC “bans” Adam from their network by way of refusing him access to late night shows and “interview” type shows they are opening themselves up to not only bad press, but legal problems.

Personally, its getting a little old, all of the inuendo that Adam will never get over the “bru-ha-ha” of the AMAs. I really wouldn’t loose sleep over the idea that he might not get to do the things he has already been contractually designated to do. No Adam Lambert clause in existence, yet. Besides, isn’t Kimmel “late night”…no kids at that hour, right. Or do parents use the TV as a night light for their little ones?

IMO, it’s too early to call that.

I think Lambert’s, in particular, has a good chance of going platinum, because it’s got a lot of catchy, potential top 40 hits on it, which could sustain its sales.

It depends on how things take off on the radio and, from what I’ve seen, they seem to be now moving in a positive direction.

The Kimmel thing is not cancelled. There’s no indication of that, just a fan created rumor that’s spreading like a game of telephone. Although if people keep calling the event organizers to tell them that it is, maybe it will be.

Albums do not sell gold or platinum overnight. Sometimes it takes months or years, not days or weeks. In fact selling too heavily “up front” means that the Artist and the album isn’t growing legs and that there are other reasons rather than good music for the album to sell. I think this is what happened to John Mayer. The album sucks…and now that more people have heard it the word is getting round and the sales are stalling.

Once the “front end loading” for an album settles down…the best scenario is for the album to continue with nice steady sales week in and week out. If someone can sell 10,000 albums a week for a year they go gold…20,000 platinum. That would be the absolute best type of sells…and that would keep an Artist in front of the public’s eye.

Another thought, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t really follow John Mayer except as he’s portrayed in the media, but it seems he isn’t making a lot of new fans these days, in terms of his behavior (flings with every actress who breathes, etc.) All I seem to hear is how people are kinda sick of his antics.

When Barbara met Adam to interview him for her ‘Ten Most Fascinating People of 2009′ ³, she asked him to go on The View. It’s up to his people.

When Adam was skyped on Oprah’s show for about five minutes, she asked him three times if he was going on her show when his album comes out. She is definitely interested, so it is a matter of logistics.

Remember–Oprah’s invitation to come back was BEFORE the AMA’s; she might not be so anxious now. Would love to know her take on this.

I wouldn’t read much into the fact that kimmel wasn’t mentioned in the rca press release. The purpose of that release was not to list evey single upcoming appearance and the tonight show and leno are both higher rated than kimmel

I have wondered about the NYE thing; has Ryan mentioned this on his show recently? Somehow, I think it’s more likely that Adam would be on Kimmel (less high profile, and a concert) than he would be on Rockin NYE (b/c it’s an Idol tie-in and I am not sure ABC wants an Idol tie-in right now). I hope I’m wrong about this, however.

I hope Oprah would still like to Adam on her program. It wouldn’t be until at least sometime in January or February and it’s a syndicated program, right? (Thus, no ABC tie-in.) If she is still concerned, many weeks later, I’d be disappointed to say the least.

BTW, AINow is going to interview Monte Pittman. They have already sent him the questions (per their tweet to me). That should be fun! Citizen Vein will definitely come up (that was my question; would they play songs from CV on the Tour).

Barbara said on the View that they discussed the AMA’s. Hopefully they talked about more since that issue wouldn’t be someting that would bring in new viewers anyway.

The ladies of The View have pretty much brought Adam up in discussion everyday since the AMA’s either on their show, or in Joy’s case, on another show.

Barbara has said she liked Adam and thought he was a very nice young man. Joy has said GMA and ABC chickened out and has voiced her opinion that Adam is talented on her show. Whoopie, who happens to be bi-sexual, seemed to be most concerned as to whether or not it was homophobic to censor the kiss and grind. When Rod Stewart said Adam’s antics were only Rock and Roll on the show, she agreed. I don’t remember anything Sherri Shepherd has said positively or negatively about it. Elizabeth is the only one who seemed more than just annoyed or interested by his antics on AMA.

You guys probably know better than me if he has a set date to appear on the show, but I don’t doubt for a second the View cast wants him there. It probably is a matter of determining if their audience wants to see him.

Honestly, If ABC has to pay a fine because of Adam’s AMA performance, I can easily see why they wouldn’t be thrilled to give him a stage again. It’s their prerogative. I’m guessing the New Year’s Eve show might be next.

Wow, Kimmell did cancel Adam. That means New Year’s Eve is not going to happen. Although maybel he’ll be a guest on Kimmel but not perform. It’s still kinda confusing.

To be honest, I could see Jingle Balls being very wary of Adam performing. A really big part of the audience could be pre-teens and parents def don’t want a repeat of the AMA.

I feel bad for Adam that there’s still backlash but I’m not really surprised. It wasn’t just the AMA. The whole GMA thing after really created a mess for ABC/Disney.

I can’t help it, I am getting kind of annoyed at the hosting gigs. It is great advertising for Adam the personality, but what about advertising the music?

In terms of Kimmel, it wasn’t added until after the AMAs, right? If it is cancelled, I doubt it is due to ABC/AMA stuff.

Seriously guys’ ¦.take a chill. If it is cancelled, it could be cancelled for a number of reasons and not because of AMA-ABC stuff!

I admire your optimism, but with the ABC (and Disney) stuff, I had a strong gut feeling the rumor was true. And now there’s NO WAY he’s going to be joining Ryan Seacrest for New Year’s Eve.

Some sponsor, etc., is pulling some really big strings/raising hell at ABC to do this to Adam. I guess they feel it’s really too soon after the AMA/GMA deal to move on and let him make appearances on their network–if they ever will again. Just yuck!

I bet Adam and 19/RCA are besides themselves! I know Adam’s getting some other gigs, but pissing off a big network (with, I’m assuming, no apology) is BAD news for our guy.

Wow – I hope this is just a scheduling thing because I seriously think this would be a very stupid position for ABC to take . . I mean, they made their point already. It just seems like this would really get alot of people up in arms (and I don’t mean fans, I mean other artists, entertainmers, political groups, etc.) that could cause a real PR backlash. They really can’t use the justification that “Adam is too unpredictable” now . . HE KNOWS it would be career suicide to pull something like that again, and I think he has shown the proper amount of contrition. Also, there ARE technical stopgaps that everybody knows they could use – people have already questioned why they didn’t use them at AMAs. They would be on very shaky ground here in my opinion, and this is an area I do know something about professionally.

Well in their GMA cancellation ABC cited the early morning hour and protection of children. What will their excuse be for cancelling appearances between midnight and 1 am???

The only reason I think Adam is hosting all the Jingle Balls is because 19 waited too long to get them scheduled and now the rosters are full. Maybe 19 didn’t think they were going to need them.

I would also like to add that although I guess some people have filed some compaints about the FCC – I am fairly confident – again have some background that this will not be deemed obscene based on current FCC regulations and the caselaw that goes along with the interpretation of obscenity and its application in a broadcast setting.

This sucks I feel terrible for Adam. It just has to be petty revenge at this point b/c they can’t seriously think Adam would pull another AMA performance again after all this brouhaha and his statements that he is going to go a new direction and his recent restrained performances of WWFM. If ABC really cancelled this b/c of the AMAs, then it’s a ridiculous overreaction.

I’m not surprised that the Walters interview is still on – he’s not performing and that’s where ABC said he was unpredictable.

After seeing Adam’s contrite tweets and his Ellen appearance, I posted that I felt Adam’s label had read him the riot act –
this just cements my opinion, and I think they have probably been trying to talk ABC out of cancelling Adam’s performances over the past few days.

ps…..I think in any further interviews, Adam (and his people) should request that the host not ask any more questions about the AMA’s. It’s really beating a dead horse now. Let’s move on!!!!!! (I know I am dreaming)

That said, maybe I just don’t “get” what’s so special about Susan Boyle (pleasant voice but generic, IMO) but I continue to be perplexed that she is #1 on the Billboard 200. It is rather amusing that Simon Cowell and the other judges makes a big deal about “commercial”, “radio-ready” singers and “package artists” on American Idol when the biggest seller this week is a middle-aged woman who sings covers and show tunes and I’m guessing won’t have a big presence on Top 40 radio.

jpfan, Adam made no accusations against GMA. He was very understanding of their situation. I am sure any grief GMA got about Chris Brown came from a lot of different directions. That they would allow him to promote his music on their show, was a bad judgement on their part which they rectified.

It wasn’t just Adam’s fanbase giving GMA grief for the Chris Brown. Over at ontd main (which isn’t an Adam fanbase at all, they seem to dislike him) there was a ton of outrage at the decision, not b/c they were mad that Adam was cancelled, but because GMA would have Chris Brown on at all. Most people were commenting with “wow I really don’t like that Lambert guy (or douche) but I HATE Chris Brown and I’m outraged that they’d have him on”… so yeah, not just Adam fans at all. Chris Brown has developed quite a strong hater-base, which is very understandable considering this last year.

I can’t recall what artical it was, but I read that his team planned a televisual, rather than radio roll-out for Adam, so these cancelations are making my heart sink.

All this crap makes me very concerned about his career. Any gig is a good gig at this point, even just hosting, but SINGING is what he needs to be doing! Hope 19E/RCA keep him under contract!

We go from hearing he has the 2nd highest debut album for a new artist this year (behind SuBo) to his career is tanking again based upon guesswork. It amazes me how his fans get so much in a uproar and panicked about every thing without getting facts first.

The hosting gigs are GOOD things, not bad things people. He gets lots of stage time, the radio station will spin his single, there will probably be some way to hear his music at the concert. Chill

purely speculating here, but dick clark , who still is a force in the industry to be reckoned with, may not have been too happy w/ lambert’s performance on the ama’s… though weakened by old age and a stroke, he still has a lot of clout, and if he wasn’t happy, then that may be the reason behind the cancellation [s] … there are ”playmakers” like clark still pulling a lot of strings behind the scenes in the industry, and this makes the fallout a tad sobering, and more shortsighted on adam’s part not to take into consideration just how that performance was going to play – not just for the studio and home audience, but to these real powers that be… it is what it is…

ugh…good news, bad news, good news, bad news…this roller coaster ride is making me sick to my stomach.

I feel like I’m back in high school again where someone got suspended for pulling a prank…and once the suspension had been served the Principal ganged up on them by calling them out in an Assembly and then not letting them “play” in the big game. Hand out your punishment, let the perpetrator serve their penance, and then call it a day. Piling on just makes everyone look bad and nobody wins.

Hope that the reason for the cancellation is coming and that it doesn’t get swept under the carpet. I think it is time for ABC to be very frank. I think Adam’s fans and non-fans alike deserve a straight and above board statement. If Adam is to be punished “for life” just let everyone know.

I agree about the hosting thing, particularly at z100, the #1 market in the country– lots of exposure to radio audiences who do not know him yet, his music will be spun leading up to the ball as well

Though I agree with you in principle they did change the Chris Brown GMA concert because of viewer outrage. So people do have power on some level. If it effects their pocket ABC Disney will respond to pressure.That is why I really think they canceled Adam on GMA’s

But the whole thing revolves around the statement issued by ABC/Disney. They said Adam was being “punished” for going outside of the confines of what he did on rehearsal and the resulting “live” performance was inappropriate for young children.

Well, Kimmel is not live…it is taped. The program is aired “late night”. So for ABC to continue their “banishment” then the issue is bigger than their earlier statement and they need to be forthcoming.

Gosh, I’m a bit of two minds on this. I honestly thought that the GMA cancellation was discrimination against him for being an overtly sexual out gay man. Nothing like that had been done before (to my knowledge) and I didn’t see his performance to be THAT out there — except for the simulated fellatio which I did raise my eyebrows on when I was watching.

On the other hand, if ABC has been called to the carpet on this by the FCC (as in it’s being treated by them in a way different from their other ‘usual’ complaints for indecency by overly sensitive viewers), whether or not they incur a fine, ABC is probably spending a LOT of money on lawyers, advisors, etc. to make this thing go away. In which case, then I would say that ABC has a right to be pissed at the time and expense that Adam’s performance has put them through, and a little (or a lot of) punishment may in fact be understandable. ETA: And it wouldn’t matter if a show was taped or live. They may just be delivering the message to Adam (and to other controversial performers) of ‘don’t ever go off script again because if you do, we’ll ban your ass!’

Suebrody – Since you asked the question, for what its worth, both MMB and I posted above that we definitely think it highly unlikely the FCC would deem this finable, and that it is indeed very tricky territory.

And in terms of the costs of lawyer for a company like ABC, trust me, its just another day at the office. You have tons of lawyers on staff and every possible kind of law firm and their dog on retainer. Not saying a picnic, but in the grand scheme of all the crap that you get at you this is nothing.

I have NEVER thought this was a decision (the GMA one) coming from the legal department. I have talked to several friends about this and we roll our eyes. It came from a big irate advertiser, in my opinion.

Well whatever the reason this guy is way off the Rock my Town is not until Feb 17, 2010. It would have never coincided. Confused? If Jimmy Kimmel’s mom had died it’s not on the news wires yet and they have not canceled any of the other concerts. Like John Mayer on Dec 15,2009.

I have a feeling that there are other reasons for the Kimmel appearance being canceled/postponed, but there is a LARGE portion of the country on CST and the AMA’s were aired from 7 -10 PM.

And I don’t that if his Mother had Died his first inclination would be to send out a e-mail to inform everyone that Adam Lambert’s concert has been canceled until a future date in 2010

If the concert is indeed re-scheduled than the idiot that does their website needs to change the verbage from cancelled to ‘postponed to a later date’ . As long as they use the word cancelled I won’t give them the benefit of my doubt.

As for giving away tickets one day and then cancelling the next, someone at ABC may have screwed up and forgotten to pull the plug on this. Wouldn’t want to be that person!

I’m very sorry if Kimmel’s mother died, but no other concerts have been cancelled. Something still smells bad to me. A true explanation/reason for this would be very nice – if we can get one.

Also, why did RCA only mention Leno and Conan in the press release THIS morning?? His mother had not passed then.

Well, thanks, for saying I make no sense, but I was trying to say that since the band is likely employed by the WEEK, having to only employ them for ONE WEEK while they would be doing two performances within said week instead of two separate weeks, for two separate performances actually would in fact save Adam money.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, the initial information seems without merit anyway so it is moot.

Someone on AO said they received an email stating the following regarding Jimmy Kimmel. Apparently, it’s being rescheduled.

Lyndsey Parker tweeted that Adam and Jimmy Kimmel are working a reschedule date for 2010. I think it will be in February about the same time as Rock My Town. That is what Jagofficial has been trying to say in his tweets. Cross promotion is in the works.

ABC has lots of experience messing with us on the east coast regarding GMA. I’m happy to not support their network. There are other networks who will step in to fill the void.

It’s cancelled.

Honestly, If ABC has to pay a fine because of Adam’s AMA performance, I can easily see why they wouldn’t be thrilled to give him a stage again.

ABC will not have to pay any fines based on Adam’s performance. He did nothing that was any more sexual than stuff done by at least half a dozen other people on that show.

The *only* thing he did differently was to exhibit some male-on-male sexuality. And FCC will not rule against ABC on that kind of discriminatory basis. It’s illegal to do so, and they know it. That would be pure discrimination, given the ton of other simulated sex acts performed on the AMA stage that night — not to mention on many of the other music awards show.

They’re not anticipating a fine. They’re just getting crap from some big-money advertiser with conservative Christian ties who’s taking Adam’s performance as a new excuse to threaten Disney with pulling a lot of hefty ads because Disney is too pro-gay.

I wish adam could tweet what the heck is going on LOL. I hope it was just scheduling conflicts and not ABC making a decision to ban him. I mean, whats next, no more rockin eve?

As a Adam fan I am going to go and believe what was told to Lyndsay. I highly doubt that ABC or Disney will want to lie to a journalist especially one who works for Yahoo. I would buy they don’t care what Adam thinks but messing with the media is a whole different animal. IMHO

No. But, they will be concerned about looking homophobic. If it gets out that Adam is being blackballed from all ABC shows, the media will leap right on that. Adam is still a media draw. Whether or not anyone here thinks that homophobia played a role in ABC getting hot under the collar over Adam’s performance or not, that will be the angle the media will take if the Kimmel cancellation is followed by bouncing him from New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

But, to be clear, I have no idea what happened with the Kimmel show. It might just be a scheduling issue on Kimmel’s part. Who knows. However, it is suspicious.

Is it possible that ABC is punishing Adam by banning him from appearances for a certain amount of time like through the end of this year? Hence the rescheduling for next year? Like MJ said it’s to show him who’s boss.

Something Adam said to Ellen stood out to me: he said that he now recognizes that the network took a chance on him by giving him this chance to perform at the awards show and to close the show and he didn’t want to seem like he was disrespecting that. I think his comment was motivated by him knowing that the network DID feel disrespected and that Adam’s semi apologetic stance now is because he knew there were more consequences than GMA being canceled.

I think it’s possible other major networks will have some pause before inviting Adam to perform on a live awards show for a little while BUT Adam may just have locked up a performance spot on next year’s MTV VMAs or even the MTV Movie Awards next June. I can see it now: “Here he is, the guy the networks are afraid to let perform live. WE’ll let him do ANYTHING he wants!”

Also if Dick Clark’s New Year Rockin Eve is canceled I’m sure FOX or MTV will be happy to have Adam on their shows instead.

What would you have ABC do? Think about this senario…..A large adverstising sponsor of the network is upset with Adam’s performance on the AMA’s and threatens to pull all his multi-million dollar ads from ABC. What would you do if it was your business? I honestly don’t think that Adam is at a stage in his career where ABC would risk giving up that ad money. What Adam did was wrong and when he should have had a glorious debut, he reduced it to sleeze (and yes I think 90% of the AMA’s was sleeze). Now because of a cancellation, everyone is up in arms that he has been blacklisted. No one “knows” the reason for the Kimmel cancellation. It COULD possibly be a scheduling conflict. It happens all the time.

I think this is what happened to John Mayer. The album sucks’ ¦

Well, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it sucks, I just don’t think it’s as good as previous albums. I like John Mayer’s singing voice, and I do like a couple of the songs in there (I think Edge of Desire is a good song, Who Says is a really strange choice for a single though.).

I’m one who predicted beforehand that Adam will reach platinum, depending on what the album sounds like. Having heard it, I think most of the songs are fine, and there’re a couple of good ones I really like. The problem now appears to be perception – Adam seemed adamant on playing up his gayness with the album cover and the AMA stunt, and I’m not really sure how that will go down with the general public in the long run. Controversy may be good publicity in the short term, but that’s something people can easily get tired of. He doesn’t really want to get tagged as THE gay singer. I’m scaling down my expectation slightly, but I still think he can do platinum, if he can get a big hit or two that is (I do think a couple of the songs can be big hits, they have to be careful with single choice though). I also think that Adam is talented enough to do well in a number of other fields should he want to get into them, so I don’t think there is anything to worry about his future.

ABC will never admit the “why” for the cancellation. As for saying it will be rescheduled, that’s just a stalling technique IMO. It’s a word used to pacify people for a while – they think!

Furthermore, I don’t think the JAG guy knows what he’s talking about and won’t believe him until he can prove his source.

In reply, Yes, I do. I already stated my position RE: the mainstream press above. And honestly, I was already thinking it could actually help him in the music world . . .being a bit more “badass”. Having said that, I certainly would turn back the clock if I could . . I’m just hoping for lemonade out of lemons.

He will be on ABC for the Barbara Walters special and, probably, The View. I really don’t think he has been banned. That would be a bit of overkill, he hasn’t committed a felony.

I think if Adam is actually permanently banned from a network, that’s kind of awesome. It’s all so very rock and roll lol. It’s like abc is going to instantly turn Adam into a badass rockstar. At this point, I find this whole situation Entirely amusing.

All the Twitter loonies should just chill and stop spreading and repeating rumors. The craziness happening on Twitter is worse than getting canceled.

Adam clearly has a bunch of tv appearences coming up and with kimmel’s ratings, losing that one is not that big of a deal.

People really buy plane tickets to fly to a show with a two song set? That’s a huge waste of money and time.

well that makes no sense because Rock This Town concert is on Valentine’s Day. So why not have Adam on as scheduled in December, and then again film the Valentine’s day concert (when they could get bonus Kris and Allison if they wanted)

I don’t find Adam Lambert’s sales that impressive considering all the hype around him & the media love he got. Ranking @ # 3 doesn’t mean much to me – it’s album sales. Last year Cook sold 100K more than Lambert & he certainly didn’t get the amount of publicity Lambert got. Looking at Billboard, he isn’t even mentioned in top 100 for next week’s sales. He’s had no blockbuster singles hit either. Last year, Cook’s album went platinum in around 3 months and is one of only 19 to do so in 2009 that went platinum & had two platinum singles. In addition, though David Archuleta didn’t get great album sales, he had a huge hit with Crush. I seriously doubt that RCA or Jive invested the kind of promotion dollars in Cook or Archie like they did Adam Lambert totally ignoring promoting Kris Allen who actually won A.I. & by right deserved to get promotion as the winner. Reading RCA’s blurb on Lambert would have thought he was the one to re-invent & revive the music industry. Well, the middle-aged Scotish women, whom Lambert made fun of sure wiped the floor with him. Good for her, she deserves it. Adam’s fans no doubt purchased a dozen CDs as gifts as do a lot of fans who have an A.I. favorite, but next week, I bet things won’t be so rosy for him or certainly as the weeks continue. Every year heavy hitters release their albums about this time but their fans don’t buy multiple copies.
