UPDATED with stream from AO: Listen to a full stream of Adam Lambert’s new single “Better Than I Know Myself”

The tune, co-written by Claude Kelly has a great hook.  The tune already has a ton of buzz, we’ll see if pop radio embraces it.

Adam’s next album, Trespassing is set to be released on March 20.  The lead single, “Better Than I Know Myself” will be available for download December 20.

I know the leak is LQ, but it’s such an ear worm.  I have no predictions, just good luck Adam!

  • http://twitter.com/moodswings1 Emily

If this doesn’t smash for him, I don’t know what will. LOVE IT.
MJ, don’t you think you should remove the dl link tho? That’s really not cool.

  • ronnie

I love how you are so on top of things 24/7.  This really is the best Idol blog.

  • Emmy

I love it and I didn’t think I would after hearing the demo.  His voice, the beat, the bridge – it’s all just gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

I’m in love with the song already <3 _ <3  I really hope it does well:)

  • Anonymous

I could hear this on the radio. It does, as someone suggested bring to mind 30 Seconds to Mars “Vox Populi”  but, all songs really often bring to mind other songs.

  • Anonymous

I am not a fan of Adam Lambert, but I loved his Pink song and I LOVE this one. I can’t stop listening…it just needs an epic music video. Wow…Beautiful lyrics and voice.

  • Anonymous

Loved it! I was afraid I wouldn’t but I really do! Hope it’s a hit!

  • Dakota01

I love it, especially the bridge, and it has a great hook.  Adam’s voice sounds stellar.  I think it’s a stronger song than WWFM for sure, and I like WWFM.  BTIKM sounds very current and what radio is playing now.  I hope it’s a big hit for Adam.  The feedback from DJs and PDs has been very enthusiastic, so I think that bodes well for it’s success.

  • http://twitter.com/monicathe11 Marie

I love this, I cannot wait until 12/20/11 so that I can download this song legally and support Adam for his hard work.  I have to admit I found this on Twitter this morning and I’ve been pressing the replay butting nonstop.

  • Anonymous

I was going to wait until the official release for my first listen, but my willpower lasted fewer than 30 seconds.  I LOVE IT!!  I was a fan of WWFM, but I actually like this one much more.  His vocals are gorgeous.  Now let’s hope the general public loves it, too.

  • GS61

This sounds like a cross between Bruno Mars and Nick Lachey.

The song is fantastic! If this gets radio play it will be a smash because it has every thing else going for it. Great beat, hook, awesome vocals, lovely lyrics, it will all depend on radio. Congrats Adam!

  • Anonymous

I was so scared I wouldn’t like his new stuff, but I like this song more than anything he’s ever done ever, except for like Sleepwalker at the most.

This song is so catchy.  Already on repeat.  Hope it does well, he deserves it.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know, but it took me many, many (many, many) listens to WWFM–and probably an acoustic performance–to love it.  But first listen, this one got me.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

Am I the only one who thinks this doesn’t sound anything like Adam? It’s very … processed?

WIth that said, it sounds like a good song.

  • Anonymous

I’m really excited to hear this on the radio. His voice sounds great and I think it’s really more current than anything FYE had on it (and I liked that album a great deal).

Now I’m thinking of how amazing the rest of the songs must me. Cannot contain my glee!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_P46N6P5XPK22JVXDJJEENXGLVE marie

I cannot stop listening. I hope the DJ’s gives this song the spins that it deserves.

  • Anonymous

I’m coming at this from the standpoint of someone who admires Adam’s voice but didn’t get into the (IMHO) over-processed songs that dominated his last album.  I remember a post on MJ’s that had him doing an acoustic rendition of “Waddya Want” and I was totally blown away. I like Adam’s voice stripped down and bare. He has powerful emotions in his voice that easily get buried in walls of sound.

This song is not what I was hoping for. Yes, I understand, Adam’s going for the pop market so I can’t get the totally acoustic Adam that I want.  But this song (especially the chorus) is just… sound.  And I don’t know if it really stands out that much.  It doesn’t hit the earworm test. For me.

Adam’s voice is amazing though and he does a lot with an okay song.  I’m sure all of his thousands of fans will be in rapture. I wish him the best.

  • Anonymous

I adore this!  I also was going to wait but I just HAD to listen.  Love, love, love it!

  • http://twitter.com/scclarke90 Shelly

    I love it!

  • ronnie

Hated the demo, hated the clip, but I love this!

  • koshka

Really is a great Top40 fodder!! Shortened/sort of choppy lyrics and sort of an R&B beat… I think this will do very well on radio. Love the bridge.

ETA: whichever DJ said it.. it really is a nice updated, current sounding song.

  • Anonymous

The fun part will be the live and probably acoustic versions too, to go along with the radio version. One for each fan :)  Cause let’s face it, radio is not going to play an acoustic arrangement and I’m sure that’s not Adam’s wish either. And no two performances will be alike.

Now I want the HQ version.

Please RCA don’t make me hate your for this singles choice, you rarely impress me lately. I hope you did all your homework this time.

Oh FWIW, a radio station personality in my town tweeted today that they are not a fan (not a hater, just not a super fan) and thought it sounded like a hit. So hopefully RCA has done their homework.

  • LaurelG

Total earworm.  And the surprise for me is how much I love the lyrics.  I usually don’t focus on that part of a song, lol.

If the big stations jump on this quickly I think it will definitely hit faster and bigger than WWFM.  It sounds like it belongs on Top 40 yet it sounds fresh at the same time.

His voice is just amazing on it too.  Really a beautiful song.

  • Anonymous

That’s exactly him and I don’t hear heavy process. If you feel that way, to me, it means his 2nd era is so current and different than 1st era. It also means he can sing anything, as long as he wants. JMHO.

Such a great song! I can hear the smash over the places.

  • Anonymous

I love Adam live even more than recorded, so just think how he’ll do this song live! All the different versions we’ll get, like with WWFM. It’ll be a beautiful thing indeed.

  • YeahRight

Wow.  That was pretty meh.  It didn’t stay in my head afterward.  The sign of a good song is if it stays in my head and it didn’t.  I couldn’t even picture a video for it.  It also sounds like of dated.  Today’s music is garbage, but this sounds like it should’ve been out at least five years ago.

  • soamused

OMG.  I love this.  So. much.

  • TurkeyIdol

On to the next single then.  Glade you caught this bad one early! ;)

Super cute tweets and pics out of China today.  The keyboardist filling in for Cam is Jeremy Nielsen.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHIRO4P2ZPNQFGMK5KR57VH3E4 Nanc

On first listen, not really feeling it…again, like the above poster said, too much processing, not enough of Adam’s acoustic voice…sometimes less is more

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

Why does he insist on sounding like every other artist EXCEPT for himself?

  • http://twitter.com/run4roses132 Run4Roses

This sounds great!…the bridge part was really good!

  • YeahRight

This sounds like a cross between Bruno Mars and Nick Lachey.

Yes.  This totally sounds like something that would’ve been on that Nick Lachey solo albums.

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig ShreddingHalien

As an impartial observer (Didn’t watch Idol from S5 to S10) I get confused with Adam. His personality, fashion and fans are OTT avant garde, but this track isn’t. I really wanted to like it and praise it, trust me, but to me it is over-processed and the song goes nowhere. Not a bad song and I’ll pick it up Tuesday to support him but was expecting much more.

  • Anonymous

I love it!! I know it will do extremely well on the radio and will be a big seller on iTunes because it was arranged as a Top 40 hit which is something Adam needs so that the rest of the world knows what we fans know, that Adam Lambert is the Best Singer in the Universe.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

That’s what I don’t quite understand.  He’s fearless in dress, but fearful in terms of being creative musically.

  • Anonymous

    LOL!

  • Anonymous

You should tell people that this song is LEAKED. Very shitty anyway to share this, I hope RCA does something.

  • Anonymous

You should tell that this is a leak!!! Hopefully RCA does something and deletes it from Youtube. Not cool. /sorry, this came twice..

  • Anonymous

You’ve hit it on the head, GS61!  It sounds similar to Nick Lachey’s “What’s Left of Me.”  I liked that song a lot.  However. . .

This song seems a bit ‘breathy’ to me. Like Adam was out of breath and wheezing from a chest cold while recording.  I know that can’t possibly be true.  But something isn’t quite hitting the mark to my ears.

I don’t know.  Maybe it’ll grow on me after a few listens.  That often happens.

  • YeahRight

I guess he wants to sound like everyone else so that he can get that instant hit.

  • ronnie

I like the song, but do agree with you there.  I was hoping for something like Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” or “Changes”- something a bit off the wall.  I do like the song, I think it is good, but not really unique in an artistic way.

  • koshka

LOL not on top40 … I don’t think he is in a place to be fearless yet. He can do that on his album tracks and subsequent releases. He needs a hit to sell albums and singles. I doubt this is a sole decision that Adam made. I suspect RCA wants to make a profit first.

  • Anonymous

That will teach me to listen to snippets.  I admit I wasn’t too sure about the song after listening to the snippet but the full song is so much better.  How does his voice even do that! Amazing.  I’m sure this will be a big hit for Adam.  Happy for the Adam fans.  Now Kris, hurry up already would you?

  • Anonymous

And that is a bad thing how?

So it’s ok for Gaga, and Katy Perry and Britney Spears but not for Adam Lambert who is still forging his career?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

Gaga, KP, and Britney do not sound like other artists.  That’s why they’re successful, they’re sound is distinctively their own.

  • Anonymous

No one could sound like him, no one. His voice is unique. He is unique. But I agree with you that it’ll be an instant hit. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

Don’t think Lambert exactly has the writing chops of the Thin White Duke himself.

  • koshka

    LOL soooooooo not true IMO.

  • Anonymous

I’ve listened to this multiple times already-total earworm. Adam can sing anything and I love his acoustic performances, but this sounds like a radio hit to me.

  • Anonymous

Typically, only established artists have the luxury of attempting “unique” single releases. Most artists, especially those who are relatively new on the block have to play it safe if they want radio play. Any off the wall, pushing boundary songs are left to the album alone.  It’s just how it is for everyone.

  • Anonymous

Songs get leaked and posted on YouTube all the time, it’s not a huge issue and actually can help create even more buzz about a song. Kelly had several of her songs leak as well.

Only links to illegal download would be questionable but there are none here. Really though, only hard-core fans are going to bother downloading now and are doing to buy it legally come Tuesday anyway. It’d be nice if those didn’t spread so publicly though.

ETA: The original Tumblr post linked had download links added AFTER this post was made. No way anyone could have known unless they checked again.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

Voice is front and center! LOVE IT! It is not over processed, IMO. I think some are confusing the production of the drums, etc with over processing. His voice is amazing!

  • Tess

I’ve said before that I just don’t understand why Adam is held to a standard for music creativity that no other Idol, much less most other singers are held to as far as what he produces.  I think it is great that he has a “current” sound that helps him fit into what is popular, right now, on Top 40.  And, for me, what sets Adam apart is that he can also sing (and in tune with incredible range).

I don’t hear any voice processing through my very expensive headset…I do hear tremendously clear vocals, immaculate annunciation, superb breath control, and notes (sustained or clipped) that have the potential to be the envy of a lot of singers of today.

OK…back to listening.  (And for what its worth: leaks aren’t always a bad thing. Of course there are always those that will download illegally without ever buying the song…but people who know much about “sound” and compression and all that other technical stuff…they will know that a purchased single will be a whole lot better.  I don’t think this leak will hurt Adam…I think it will help his initial sales.)

  • Anonymous

Completely disagree. There are many songs of Gaga’s whose sound (voice included) could be confused for a Gwen Stefani song. Hell, even when Britney first came out most of her songs sounded just like all the other pop princesses.  Top 40 and HAC are filled with sound alikes, so much so that they seem to need to name check themselves at the beginning of a song just so you know who is singing.

  • YeahRight

I have issues with gaga, katy perry, and britney but at least they had their own sound.  Britney did when she first started; Katy perry, too.  You could say the same for gaga when she first started.  Not now because she’s started to believe her own hype.

But this Lambert song is just horrible.  I know you all think my opinion doesn’t count because you all think I hate the dude.  I don’t.

  • http://twitter.com/moni0112 Monica

    Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

    I agree.

In the same way that Adam doesn’t sound like other artists.  Unless you want to give me some examples.  The song sounds like a Bruno Mars song but changed a bit.  Oh wait, let me cry about that into my cheerios!

He wants to be successful.  If the only thing the detractors can say about this song is that it sounds too much like the rest of stuff on the radio, then that is a WIN in my book.

We’ll have to wait and see how it does on radio, and I definitely won’t go into crazy predictions.  I’m happy that I love the song, and I’m a huge pop fan.

  • Kirsten

The demo was totally meh. This is “meh” sung by a better singer.

I thought Claude Kelly said he did a major re-write of this song? I was expecting a down to the studs reno, but this is more like a bit of paint and some new throw rugs.

I thought his publicist said that she was dancing around to this song? Maybe the last slow dance of the night.

I can see what RCA is thinking. “Let’s try to replicate Adam’s biggest hit”. But this is pale follow-up to WWFM. It tries to hit all the talking points, but it just misses. The song still goes nowhere.

I think that Adam built up enough good will in the biz that he could have gone for something more reflective of him, instead of this re-warmed song that could have been sung by so many other artists. RCA is being gutless.

This could be a bit of a hit if there isn’t anything better in the mid-tempo slot in the new year. Too bad CK didn’t give it a stronger hook.

  • Anonymous

Heh. Well, thank god I am in minority.
I am that unfortunate creature – a fan of Adam, who just can not get into this song, no matter how much I try.
It is okey-ish. It should fit in with the rest of top 40 scene rather nicely.
Just does not do anything for me.
Actually if I didn’t know beforehand it was Adam singing I probably would not have guessed it was him. So much “middle of the road”, typical pop-fodder it sounds to me.

Then again I hated the first single and was not particularly impressed with the 2 follow ups from FYE, but ended up enjoying 3/5 of the album (bonus tracks included). So perhaps “not all is lost” (lol, drama queen) and the history will repeat itself.

Good luck to Adam with this song. If audio-induced euphoria is not on the table, there is always a numbers game for this chart junky to enjoy.

  • Anonymous

Gaga’s original works were compared to Gwen a lot, some of her songs on The Fame Monster were intended for other pop stars originally (Telephone was for Britney), and her second album was likened to Madonna. “Born This Way” and “Express Yourself” have practically the same melody and instrumentation.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UITYTUSGL7IK7WLFFDXXRYP7GA Falfor

Pretty song.  After 3 listens, not too much of an earworm. The voice is great. Like it better than What Do You Want From Me. Not better than If I Had you. Very different styles and If I Had You sound got to me. Other than the background beat, it sounds a lot like the demo.

  • Anonymous

    Everyone has leaks. NBD.

IA with everyone else, album cuts are for edgy songs. Adam’s not there yet and RCA does not want to fight another FYE battle for lead single.

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind when a song invokes other, good songs as long as it’s not a copy cat, which this obviously isn’t. Considering all those pop stars work with the same writers and producers (including Claude Kelly and Dr. Luke who did this track), it’s really unsurprising people would hear similarities.

The great thing about Adam is that his voice sets him apart.

  • Anonymous

I’ve had the snippet stuck in my head for a week. Now I can have the whole song stuck in my head :DDDD L O V E it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

Liking/not liking a song is a personal thing. There is nothing wrong whatsoever in not enjoying it :) It’s an earworm for me, but that’s my own brain chemistry.

Re your previous statement that it sounded like Adam was “wheezing,” I don’t really hear that. They have the technical means of making anyone sound good nowadays. That is a blessing in one way; that it makes non-singers successful is one of its drawbacks. Adam can probably outsing most while suffering from the pneumatic plague, so this doesn’t apply to him!

  • Anonymous

I like it, don’t love it. I think it’s got a good chance of doing really well on pop radio.

I have to admit I don’t get why the publicist and others say they have been dancing to it. It’s really ot a song to dance to. But, hey w/e

Good luck to Adam with this — hope it’s a big hit!

  • Anonymous

    Exactly.

  • Anonymous

Like the song, I love the fact adam always finds a way to make his stuff unique. I  really love the beat, it so different and unique.

  • Anonymous

Good vocals of course. Thematically similiar to WWFM, which worked for him before. Still bothered by the repetive and boring backbeat, but that 80′s throwback device is increasingly popular these days. I can see how he wants to conform in order to get another Top 10 hit. I think the disappointed lies in that we know him to be capable of so much more.

BUT, I hope its a huge hit for him. It fits hand in glove with what is out there now and it has Adam’s voice so it should be.

  • Anonymous

You have the most ~unusual form of ‘like’ I’ve ever read then, LOL.

You guys KNOW I hated the choice of MKIA for Kelly.  I thought it was meh and no hook.  I have to work hard to even conjure up the chorus in my head, (unlike WDKY) and RCA did fine with it.

So we just sit back and wait and see what they can do. And I’m just really glad to be watching spins for someone other than country. *ducks*

  • ronnie

I admit he’s following and not leading.  It’s hard to become a superstar unless you lead on something, but this is a solid song, he’s made what seemed a mediocre song listenable and that’s something- hopefully he will have some edgier songs on the rest of the album.  This seems like a safe choice for wanting a pop chart career, not a firecracker like Adam, but hopefully it will pay off.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

Kristen, as always, you have the most truthful, intelligent posts on this site.
and you hit the nail on the head with this.
“I think that Adam built up enough good will in the biz that he could have gone for something more reflective of him, instead of this re-warmed song that could have been sung by so many other artists.”

  • YeahRight

This song is still mediocre.  You just keep waiting for something to happen and it goes nowhere.

And yes, where is the dancing around the room coming from?  You can’t dance to this.

  • Anonymous

    *drooling*

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

Except, I don’t think RCA is the one being gutless.  Adam has had the support of the label like no other idol alum.  Adam himself has stated that he has been given a lot of freedom in what he chooses to do, artistically.  So I KNOW that if he’d wanted to work at releasing an innovative, creative tune- the label would’ve ok’d it in a millisecond.  This tells me, that it was Adam’s choice to make a bland, identityless album of music that’s been done and done before.  And- the label went with it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

    I disagree with this.

Adam has had one big hit (wwfm) and a smaller hit (iihy). His last single, iihy, disappeared from the radio a year ago. I don’t think he’s in any position to take risks, with or without industry support. He and RCA decided to go with this piece of ear candy, and imo that was a very wise decision.

  • Anonymous

Not my kind of thing at all, but hope it does well for him.

Why do you share leaked illegal songs? I realize it gets you hits but its an immoral way to get them and make money for yourself as you take money out of his pocket. Not cool at all.

  • luly

I like it. I hope it will be a big hit for Adam.

  • Anonymous

I love this song and the best things it has going for it is, that it’s radio friendly, catchy and Adam will be able to sing his ass off when performing it. I don’t have one bad thing to say about it and the nice thing about it is that his international fans will love it to. In the end, all that matters is to debut a good song that will sell all around the world and help promote his new album in March. If this is not the best song on that album, then that album is going to be damn good. I am a happy Adam Lambert fan and looking forward to a spectacular live performance.

  • iani

Is RCA trying to terminate Adam Lambert’s myth he has build with FYE, the unique image to a domesticated, ordinary one?! And no, it’s not Bruno Mars/ Nick Lachey sound, it’s David Archuleta/Nick Lachey  one, CK has mixed the idols he was writing for.  Bruno Mars might be next with his reggae/Hawaiian  influences as the icing over the cake: hope at least to “taste” good and sell mil.

  • Anonymous

You make a good point, Kirsten.  It’s a pretty song, but it’s just floating without landing anywhere concrete.  Technically, there’s nothing wrong with it.  But it has no exclamation point, nothing that gives it an unique identity.  There’s nothing wrong with emulating other popular songs, but not to the point that it diminishes what is supposed to be a strength: individuality.

  • mmb

    Love this!!!! Really well done!

RCA isn’t going to let Adam put out an edgy avant-garde single as a lead single!!! Adam had some album and bonus tracks on FYE that were a little weirder and edgier than his single. Based on the descriptions of other album tracks from Rolling Stone, i expect the same this time too

And FWIW- gaga, Brit and Katy hardly have unique sounds. Gaga evokes Madonna in a huge way and her vocals are pretty straightforward 80s-style vocals; Katy is typical straightforward pop; Britney has always been the product of her producers. None have ushered in a totally new sound or genre

  • http://twitter.com/scclarke90 Shelly

i actually like this more than wwfm.

  • Joyed

I like it overall – I just think it sounds pretty.  (I think it’s one of those songs where I listen to the overall sonic landscape of the song rather than the lyrics).

I also like it A LOT better than WWFM (I guess I was an outlier on that song, lol).

The end of the chorus actually reminds me of the end of the chorus in Daniel Bedingfield’s song “If You’re Not the One” – especially the “better than I know my seeellll-elf” part reminds me of “is there anyway that I can staay, in your liiifffee.”  They also have similarly repetitive back beats.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3bFOT1e-AU

I don’t know how it will chart, but honestly that is one of the last things I care about when a new song debuts – then it is more about what I think about it. :)

  • http://twitter.com/nickpeterson Nick Peterson

Wow… sounds generic and almost dates. I really wasn’t expecting anything like this at all. Definitely agree with the peeps saying it sounds like a Nick Lachey single. Adam could be such a unique artist if he would just stop trying to make a radio-friendly song.

  • Tess

Since I only listened to the demo of this song once and do not feel compelled to play the two side by side to see what changes, if any, were made to Adam’s track I can’t judge how the two compare.  I will say that I think Adam did a great job with this material, that his voice is steller on this song, that, hopefully, it should do well on Top 40 (which should be the intent of a released single) and that he should have fun singing this live for his TV appearances.

Sometimes its not always the best course to re-invent the wheel.  I am sure the songwriters didn’t hand this to Adam with the intent that he completely change their song so that it becomes unrecognizable to them….if that is what people thought would happen then Adam shouldn’t have recorded the song in the first place.  And to Adam’s and the teams credit at least they didn’t just record his vocals over an already established backing track which many Artists tend to do (and which Adam, himself, has done in the past).

  • YeahRight

I can totally hear David Archuleta doing this song.  And Nick Lachey has done it with “What’s Left of Me”.

  • ronnie

I so agree with you.  He does not have enough support to do something really risky and it would be played because of that- certainly not yet.  It’s going to be a toss-up if radio will even play this, it will certainly be debated.  And I don’t think this was Adam’s choice, really- he seemed quite happy months ago and then there were delays and even rumors of disagreements, Adam’s father even said something about Adam’s artistic vision, so I have no doubt this is much more something that RCA would want as the first single than Adam, I’m just glad it’s decent and not something really embarrassing, which is something they could have forced on him.

  • Anonymous

Hooky Hook! Ear Worm! Fab Vocal! Great Beat! Perfect.

  • Anonymous

Still enjoying the “ear candy”. I love the song, it’s not that complicated. I am curious about the new bridge lyrics, though. Would love to know if Adam had a hand in them, they are so vulnerable and “candid” as that MTV reviewer said. Can’t wait to hear Adam sing this live too, it is also a perfect song for an acoustic version.

Adam can’t even grow a goatee without having a “respected” gentlemen’s publictaion make a gay joke! He can not be daring in his releases, YET! Remember the PDs that said they wouldn’t play Fever? Remember that FYE had to be pulled, due to the overt sexual material? But Rhianna can ask a guy in a song how big he’s gonna get, with NO repercussions. Anyone who thinks Adam is free to be free with his music while still establishing himself has not been paying attention.
This song has Top 40 hit written all over it! If it goes big, he will have more freedom. If his 2nd single gets picked up quickly, and gets immediate play, just because of the success of this one….. then he can release some crazy, OTT song!
    But not yet!

  • Anonymous

I think it will probably be a radio hit.  That being said, I don’t like most music that is being played on the radio right now.  I like acoustic Adam more than this, but I know acoustic music will not generally get you played on the radio.  There is too much noise going on for me.  I think Adam is an amazing singer, but I do not really like the tone in his voice.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UITYTUSGL7IK7WLFFDXXRYP7GA Falfor

Truly, Adam has a great voice, this is well established. He could sing “Sh__, sh__ sh__ to the tune of Jingle Bells and some would love it and others would hate it. Adam is a controversial figure. But he is human and with a pretty song like this there is only so much that anyone can do (and he seems to have done it). I like the song, but after a few more listens, what bothers me about it is that it does not have much of an ending. It just sorta stops when you think it should keep going or peak. Gotta get used to that.

  • Anonymous

And what?  Not get played on radio?

Oh wait, you want him to fail.  Gotcha.

  • Reflections On Life

The lyrics and the vocals are memorable (the music is not). But once a song gets radio play, oftentimes that’s enough to sustain its popularity.

  • Anonymous

I think I’ll wait to hear the whole album before pronouncing it lack of identity.  And the only other song we have heard, OOL can’t be called out for not having identity either.  Musically it’s a ballad (who knows what the production will be) but gay marriage? I think that goes perfectly with his identity and is very personal.

Do you remember FYE as lead single? NO WAY RCA is going through that again.

  • http://twitter.com/Universal_Love Universal_Love

OMG, I love it!  Tuesday come soon!  Is this legal to post the leak?

  • http://twitter.com/cherieforadam cheriemelissa

This should not have been posted. Love the song, but Adam deserves better. Somebody’s trying to screw with the release and success of the song! Real shitty! Hope you all buy too!

  • Anonymous

Good but not what I expected!! Still have high hopes for the album. Either way I will still support him!

  • Anonymous

If you don’t make radio friendly songs, you don’t get played on the radio.

  • Anonymous

This song doesn’t come off as “overprocessed” to me at all.  I’m just not getting that criticism.  There has to be a certain level of processing for it to be played on today’s top 40 radio, but I don’t think BTIKM has exceeded the palatable limit by any means.  Adam’s voice is front and center, the instrumentation is subtle where it needs to be and booming to accompany the powerful, catchy chorus.

As for those wishing the song were a little more “out there” artistically speaking, I agree that it’s quite mainstream, but I truly don’t think Adam has a choice if he wants to establish a comfy home on today’s radio.  It certainly sounds like there will be songs on his album that are less traditional, and his already established fans will be hearing those on March 20, regardless of whether or not BTIKM is their ideal cuppa.  But, unless Adam has a radio hit, his current fan base is all that will likely hear those other offerings.  He’s hoping for longevity in the business, and releasing something that’s maybe cool but not radio friendly isn’t going to receive enough airplay to sell the number of albums he needs to satisfy his label.  It’s a sad fact.  I really, really love BTIKM for what it is — a very good quality, radio friendly pop tune that highlights Adam’s rich vocals.  I have a feeling Trespassing has at least a few gems that may never appeal to Top 40 radio but will help Adam gain artistic respect in the music community.

  • Anonymous

Anyone who wants the song isn’t going to settle for a poor quality version.  This is a highly compressed file, in other words a poor copy.  I seriously doubt this being here is going to hurt anyone.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I like BTIKM and Adam sounds great on it!  Cool!  I hope that this song does well.  :)

  • Anonymous

I can dance to this. In fact, I’m dancing with joy that RCA has chosen a single for one of my Idol favorites that has the potential to be a radio hit and that they are probably willing to spend the money it takes to promote it.

  • http://twitter.com/cherieforadam cheriemelissa

This should not have been posted. Love the song, but Adam deserves better! Somebody’s trying to screw with the release and success of the song! Real shitty! Hope you all buy too!

  • jaylee

I love the song and I really like the way his vocals is layered.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    I agree.  Not yet.

  • Anonymous

Music is subjective, but that said, if Adam had done something really off the wall, some people would be complaining it wasn’t “radio friendly” enough, lol. Sometimes you can’t win, but I’ll take a radio hit over “artistic” at this point in Adam’s career. It helps that this is a genuinely great song and can’t wait to hear it on the radio on my way to work!

  • Anonymous

This is song has now been likened to Bruno Mars, Rihanna, One Republic, Nickelback, Beiber, Archuleta, Nick Lachey, and Derulo.

I think it’s safe to say we all hear completely different things when we listen to this song. I’m just going to go with “I like it.”

  • Anonymous

    ITA, great post!

  • gferna

I’m not sure… I promise I will hear it like 15 times to see if I can get it… Lead single is supposed to be the best they have… If this song tanks, second album is done.  For the moment, nobody is going to buy if you can download it for free…
Maybe I’m overreacting…  I think Adam desperatly wants a ballad hit.

  • Anonymous

This is the demo. Sounds dated to me but hey who knows what radio will play.

  • Anonymous

I liked the demo, and I LOVE Adam singing this song – to me, the “somewhere” where the song goes is to Adam’s delivery of the title hook.  I hope radio feels the same way.  We’ll see.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

When I heard Kelly Clarkson’s Mr. Know it all, I thought it kind of sounded generic, but it grew on me the more I heard it. I think this is the case with this song. Adam’s vocals are great on it, and I think it will grow on people. Overall It’s a good song and it sounds current. I can’t wait to hear the more uptempo stuff.

  • http://twitter.com/Universal_Love Universal_Love

It sounds somewhat like Bruno Mars’ It Will Rain.  It will be a radio hit that’s for sure.  Love it!

  • YeahRight

This is song has now been likened to Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Nickelback, Beiber, Archuleta, Nick Lachey, and Derulo.

    Where?  I don’t see that.

  • askance

The thought of David A singing this made me
chuckle. David has an absolutely lovely voice, but for me “I get kinda
dark, Let it go too far, I can be obnoxious at times” sung by him would be
a stretch; he’s so sweet and adorable.

I think the song has a good hook and I
hope it does really well. I remember reading that one of the uk radio
guys who got to hear it early on mentioned that rca had picked the ‘safer’
    choice as the first single.

  • Anonymous

In addition to this, I’d like to point out that posting a leak isn’t inherently different than it being streamed before release (and this came from his fansite in another country). It’s just a way to preview the song before purchase.

Btw, all download links were taken down immediately upon notification so you can’t ask for anything more.

  • Anonymous

Love the song, but Adam deserves better.

Adam deserves better? Than others? Song Leaks have been posted for practically every other idol. Some are happy, some aren’t. I was glad for the chance to listen to the full song. Not surprised I don’t like it, but glad I got to listen. Thanks, mj.

  • Anonymous

Because Adam can only be a “real artist” if he doesn’t care about making any money at all? Come on… if you want to be a recording artist you have to find a way to pitch to radio. Otherwise you’re a very popular bar singer.

  • Anonymous

Makes sense considering the same guy wrote Grenade.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know about that.  The lead single for most newish acts is usually the safest one.  If it gets good radio play, then better, or more unique ons are more apt to get played later.

  • http://twitter.com/canadaluvsadam Debbie

As thrilled as I am to hear BTIKM in it’s entirety I find this very upsetting…In my honest opinion nothing good ever comes from leaked versions of an Artists music…In a way this is just as bad as pirating music…Would you reconsider your decision by putting it up and please take it down

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure pop radio will play this. HAC will.

  • YeahRight

Yeah, but this sounds nothing like “Grenade”.  I don’t know what “It Will Rain” sounds like.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

Not here, but on other sites. Add Beyonce to that list btw :)

  • Anonymous

Yeah, so many Idol singles have been groundbreaking. :-)

  • koshka

I think thats the problem IMO … from the comments of others, I suspect more than a few people posting are not familiar with Top40. And also ask.. “but who knows what radio will play?” If you listen to Top 40, its apparent. Not saying this will necessarily hit big, but it has Top40 written all over it and in it and around it. Thats this particular song’s job.

  • LaurelG

I guess I don’t really care how changed or not changed it is from the demo.  I didn’t really listen to the demo anyway.

And I don’t care either whether it’s considered “risky” by someone else’s standard.

All I care about is how this song will sound on the Top40 stations that I listen to ALL THE TIME.  And I think it will sound fantastic.  I think it will be one of those songs that will cause me to reach over and turn up the volume on the car radio when I hear the opening beats.

I also think most listeners on Top 40 stations will think of Bruno Mars, if they think of anyone at all.

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

Great Post Teri63!  I wish Cookie had more radio friendly songs on his cd. It is beautifuly artistic but hasn’t garnished radio play so has stalled.  Sad for me.

  • Anonymous

IWR is one the Bruno Mars songs I like and it is a big hit, I’ll take it.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for this post – I think it’s a great rational summary of lots of feelings about the song, the album, adam’s long term carreer and ability to create artistic space for himself by paying the recording “rent”.

  • Tess

If a song isn’t leaked or doesn’t get streamed how is anyone supposed to know whether it is good enough to purchase?  Isn’t that why songs are played on the radio…to get heard.  Other than “fans” nobody is really going to buy a new song because of a 30 second snippet.

And I took off my headset and listened to the song…boy it sounds different without quality gear.  I can only imagine how much better an uncompressed version is going to sound.

  • Anonymous

Exactly, this is so the kind of song you want to sing along and sway and bop to in the car! That’s what I plan on doing, so come on radio!

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

Adam IMO went to OTT with the cover of FYE, the AMA performance and the FYE as the first single.  Not my cuppa.  I liked WWFM, really liked Sleepwalker to me BTIKM is like a juiced WWFM with a Sleepwalker hook.  Good Job Adam.

  • Anonymous

I have very little visceral interest in Adam [I love Kelly and I'm curious about Haley, but if I'm a fan of anyone, it's MJ and her great, funny blog], but with all the hype, I think I forget sometimes what an incredible instrument Adam has. And let’s face it – if there’s an x factor, Adam has got it.  He’s undeniably charismatic [well, that's my opinion]. I suspect his real secret weapon is that he appears very smart and savvy.  I think this is true of Gaga, for example. It takes a chess player to plan career moves. But whether something is a hit or not – I wouldn’t presume to say. It’s a great production job, and it’s got a very catchy hook. It makes me interested to hear the album. I guess that’s what it needs to do?

All songs leak, and I think it’s often from the label. It creates buzz. I mean, the artist goes on a thousand shows post release, and sings the single. If people want to rip off the music, it’s not like there aren’t six hundred ways to do that at this point ;)

  • Anonymous

This sounds nothing like Bruno Mars to my ears. But RCA are the experts. They seem to think the single will do well. Who releases a single the week before Xmas though. Weird.

  • Anonymous

I can see the comparisons to “It Will Rain.” It’s in that wheelhouse–another pretty song that doesn’t break any molds.  The difference is that IWR is from the Breaking Dawn soundtrack, ensuring it a built-in fanbase, along with Mars being on a good streak of hits over the past couple of years.

But BTIKM will likely fit with current radio. Not sure IF it’ll be a hit. But getting some radio play shouldn’t be too hard.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ISIDrinne Cristiana Carosio

You think being fair to Adam by posting such before the actual release date? It’s already on Youtube, how many of those who will download that will also buy the legit copy on stores?

  • Anonymous

A LOT OF PEOPLE. including me.  Leaks happen ALL THE TIME.

  • Tess

Somebody pretty smart releases for purchase the week of Christmas.  Fans get a chance to hear the song and then buy with their I-tunes gift certificates that fill their Christmas stockings.  Also…it gives radio time to analyze the song and to see how well it is doing to see if they want to add it come January.

The marketing this go round for Adam has been pretty flawless.  He’s stayed in the publics’ eye with his TV appearances and his red carpet stuff, he’s had great twitter hype from his writers and producers, he’s releasing when other singers may be a little hesitant, he’s done some amazing one-off gigs…the list goes on.

  • http://twitter.com/DanArizmPerez Mauricio Arizmendi

Its going to flop just as For Your Entertainment single, I don’t seehim selling well agin

  • Anonymous

    Where?  I don’t see that.

Geewhizz, you missed some thing about adam?  say it aint so?  Yes, those comparisons have happened.

Also, this thread?  HILARIOUS!  So many kris allen fans and durbinators talking about how unoriginal it all is.  The irony, it burns.  Adam doesn’t need to make music that is totally different from everything else on the charts, although I am sure there will be plenty of that.  His voice sets him apart.  Not one of the people listed in this thread has a hope in hell of pulling off this track, not even the ones with decent voices like David A or those that think they have range, like Durbin.

Katy P and Britney have their own sounds?  Haha bullshit, they all have the exact same stable of writers writing for them and Britney could have just as easily sang California Girls as KP – neither one of them could sing this song. Telephone? Gaga wrote it FOR Britney then sung it herself when Britney didn’t want it.

aaaaand finally before the ban hammer falls upon me twice i two days (seriously MJ why even bother when we can just sign up for a new Discuss account – and why not ban actual trolls like yeah right?)  Kelly C releases MKIA which is a blatant Bruno Mars Grenade ripoff and its all ‘yeah kelly, staying current’.  Adam releases a song that you can hear alongside bruno mars song in the charts and its all ‘he has so much radio cred after struggling to get radio play for a year, why didn’t he release something risky’

    lol butthurt idolberts, nevar change!

Yes MJ I’ll show myself out!

I’ll have to look for the others and I’m off to work now but they were in the other Adam (possibly headlines) posts, if anyone cares to look.

  • Anonymous

I’m not in love with it, but I really like the chorus–it’s an earworm!  Like some others, I’m not crazy about the thumping drum beat (ugh), but it did bother me less on the second listen–so I think I can get used to that sound. Also, I agree it needs a better ending (maybe BTIKM repeated in lower notes or something for a better resolution). But, overall Adam’s voice sounds great on this and it should do well. So, thumbs up! Congrats Adam! Can’t wait for my daughter to hear it!

  • newinNM

(IMHO) This is very pretty song, sang beautifully, very radio friendly, he can make a kick ass video for it and something he can sing well live (he’s going to sing this song a few hundred times over the next year so that’s a good thing!) I’m a very happy fan right now and am looking forward to all the promo heading our way!   Songs are leaked all the time, if someone is going to buy it they will, if they usually download illegally they will either now or as soon as it hit youtube!

  • Anonymous

But Adam is so much more talented than Katy and Brittney! And Lady Gaga has lost (some) fans and media attention because it is becoming increasingly evident she is imitating others.

The real heartbreak is there is nothing unique or different about this song. The lyrics are good but done before. The music – especially the backbeat – has been done many, many times before. Even Adam’s vocals do nothing to reveal that he has a talent above most artists performing today. If only one of these factors was offered up in an inventive manner this song could have been extraordinary. As it is, it is practically run of the mill. And I never expected I would say that about an Adam production.

  • V Jemmy

I haven’t listened to pop/ac/hac radio in years, so I will let others talk about where this song fits in the current market.

On first listen, I wasn’t overly thrilled.  On second listen, it grew on me.  5-6 listens later, I love it.  I agree with another poster’s assessment that it’s kind of a WWFM meets Sleepwalker.

Also, I suspect that the reason the single is dropping on the 20th is to take advantage of post xmas gift card sales and preorders before the buying drought that is January.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Totally agree.  Since the median viewing demographic of Idol was 47+ in 2010 (and probably higher in 2011), there’s not a lot of overlap between those people and regular listeners of top 40 radio.

  • Avari

Good song, showcases that gorgeous voice, very radio friendly. And it is an earworm. Yay!! Good choice…I think this will do well. :-)

Do I personally like it? Well…no. Or at least, not yet. Nothing really grabbed me, and the chopped off ending bothers me. Of course, I am listening at work with a cheap set of earphones. (To be fair, my favourite songs off FYE were not the radio friendly ones either…so I wasn’t particularly expecting Adam’s first single to be something I’m crazy about.)

  • Anonymous

I disagree. I don’t think Adam wants a ballad hit. And rarely are lead singles the best on an album. I guess it’s all in how you define best.

The Last Goodbye was not the best Cook had to offer, but I thought it was radio friendly. Same with MKIA

  • fuzzywuzzy

MJ:  Your link has been deleted.

I love the bridge where his voice is so vulnerable, but the part where he sings “off the eeeedge” is just addicting.

  • Anonymous

It’s already on Youtube, how many of those who will download that will also buy the legit copy on stores?

I will.  I’m glad this is posted here so that I don’t have to download the song to hear it and that I can now wait until it’s available legally to “own” it.

This gives us a chance to listen, discuss, get excited, or complain about “generic” it is.  That’s all part of creating buzz.

Any fan who considers it their role to support an artist will purchase their music.  That’s what support means.  Anyone  who isn’t a fan, but likes the song will want to have a better quality version and at $1.29, it won’t break the bank.

  • Anonymous

Leak or no leak, people will buy it if they want to. People that don’t want to buy will get it for free. You can find any song you want on line for free, it’s really easy. Posting the leak on this website (or on youtube for that matter) won’t hurt Adam’s sales more than any other artist out there. That’s the reality of the music business.

  • Anonymous

Let’s all remember your prediction. lol

I won’t buy the single but I will definitely buy the album the week it comes out, which to me, at least, is the same thing

  • Anonymous

His own backing vocals are gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

Actually, “For Your Entertainment” didn’t flop, it was quickly replaced by WWFM following the AMAs.  It then made a year-end Billboard list as a song that, if marketed, likely would have been a hit.  I believe Billboard’s opinion was based on the fact that the song sold really well despite its lack of radio play.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6KZSWCHWBYGVDBFXZ47ODEYDPY Lexi

Where can I hear it?  This link (and the others on youtube) are now blocked.  Damn, always late to the party

FYE the single also was a big hit in the Asian Market from what i read!  It had an awesome video but after the AMA fiasco FYE was dropped like a hot potatoe by RCA.

  • ronnie

The “For Your Entertainment” video was a hit, it was #1 on the Video Billboard chart at one time, I think.

  • Anonymous

I think his backing vocals are some of the best parts.
It is difficult to tear your attention away from the lyrics and really listen to the rest of what is going on but so worth it.

I want to clear up my twitter rant from earlier….
I have no problem with songs being leaked and posted.  It happens to most everyone and many times by the record company themselves. It generates buzz and interest.

My issue was with the Tumbler link that was originally posted here as well (and has since been removed, thank you) which was a download of the song. Was there a dl being passed around through DM’s earlier? yes. When I asked for the “leak link” I wasnt aware that it was a dl.. just thought it was a stream. Just like MJ didnt realize there was a dl in the link she posted.  Anyone who knows me knows I speak strongly against illegal downloads. However passing around a link on the downlow to hard core fans you know will be buying it (and probably multiple times lol) is much different than openly, illegally, sharing. IMO. I can see where people would disagree though.

So, sincere apologies to MJ for my mouth and how I handled myself. Not apologizing for being upset about the DL though. Im not generally called or assumed to be ’cray’. Overinvested and passionate at times?.. I own that. I want Adam to succeed at the highest level. He deserves it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

It was replaced less than three weeks after release, BEFORE the amas. Adam went on the amas knowing that the song had been pulled.

  • http://twitter.com/ALfann001 Ann Dee

If I recall correctly, some DJ’s heard four possibilities for the lead single, including the title track “Trespassing” co-written with Pharrell.  Some tweeted that all the songs were grewat and wished Adam and RCA good luck in choosing a lead.  When BTIKM was announced as the lead, some DJ’s commented that it was the safer choice.  I recall one who wished the choice had been “Trespassing”.  I can’t wait for the CD release on March 20th to hear the others.

  • Anonymous

And I think it still has sold close to 400K in the US. I don’t have WW sales but I think it did pretty well in several markets, not bad for a flop.

I pretty much agree with this.  Some songs are artist driven, others are producer driven with plug and play roles for the singer where the singer is as fungible as the keyboard player.  Adam’s gifts seemed disguised here, at least for me.  Not to say it won’t be successful, or that the overall effect is not good.  Just that I want an Adam performance, not a producer’s performance.

  • Emmy

I think he’s going to hit Top 10 CHR with this song, as well as HAC & AC.  AC will be playing it for 15 years, just like WWFM.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

Oh def. Last I heard, and this was almost a year ago, it had sold over 200,000. I love that song.

  • http://twitter.com/Calitox Carlos Eduardo

LOVED it. Gonna buy the HQ version.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

It’s pretty. He sings it well.

It’s in the Sleepwalker/WWFM vein. HAC should like this.

It should crack pop Top 40 IMO but after that I don’t know. I like it but I don’t hear it being on the level of “It Will Rain”, though it’s similar in feel. But it should be some type of hit. If anything is holding it back it’s that it’s sort of mellow, if that’s the right word.

I think I’m going to like the album stuff better. I like him with a little more ummph. But this should get him back on the charts.

  • Sara McDonald

I agree with others that it is more of a safe, producer’s song, but I do like it. I just wish it was more of a clear vocal and not so affected. However, I think Adam will be able to do a lot with it live, and a killer video is probably forthcoming. WWFM was not one of my favorites, yet it did really well and I still smile when I am shopping and I hear it in the store. :-) Can’t wait for the album!

  • Anonymous

I listened the demo, *once*, when it was found in Youtube. Didn’t like the song. Then I listened the snippet, *once*, when it was released. Didn’t like it.

And now, BEFORE I listened the whole song, I suddenly started to hum “Better that I know myyseeeeeeeelfff..” The song association had brought it to my mind, after listening only two scraps of it! And now, quelle suprese, I like it :D

So, even though the song isn’t super distinctive,  like Mars’ “Marry you”, Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” or Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep, it definitely has (proven!) ear worm potential.

  • http://twitter.com/krismidas Kristin Keramidas

There is definitely a formula for what the program directors will play. To maximize the success of the upcoming album Adam needs pop radio airplay, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that BTIKM has a certain structure and mainstream sound to it. I’m sure there will be edgier songs on the album that fans will love, but that wouldn’t be embraced by radio. Adam and his label are smart to lead with a song that will appeal to a broad audience. Choosing a lead single is a very carefully calculated business decision.

  • Anonymous

Waaaaaah, I saw that it leaked earlier, but I was out and couldn’t listen, crap!  I wanna hear it NOW!

The discussion is interesting though….sometimes I think you could post a audio of any nonsensical song and guess who would line up where, so whether the song is any good or not is totally subjective.  Unless it’s just full on shitty I suppose I will either like it, or love it.  It’s Adam so there’s that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

You are me. I bitched all over the place about the demo and the snippet. I now have it on loop. It’s been playing in the background for hours! I did not have this reaction to either wwfm or iihy, and as far as I know, I’m not more of a fan now than I was back when they were released. This song is an earworm.

Here are some comments from some die hard Adam fans about the single, “I hate it even more now than before. I think it’s terrible but, I hope it does the job for him and sells the album.”  and a very on-the-mark coomment-”I don’t think it’s terrible but I do think it’s kind of unremarkable. I think if this song was released by anyone else we’d all be pointing to it as an example of the ‘cookie cutter pop’ that Adam is supposed to transcend. To me it’s only interesting because Adam’s singing it.”

  • Anonymous

It’s so subjective.  All of the things some people are listing as negative being that it sounds generic,  it sounds too poppy fodder,  it sounds too much like every other pop song etc, i list as completely POSITIVE.

So there’s that.  I love the song.  I love how Adam sings it, and I can’t wait to have it on my radio with all the rest of the same pop music.

  • Anonymous

So anyway, I heard it.  I really like it.  I think he’s righted his ship with the song. No FYE where he had to placate the masses with WWFM.  Now he can funk it up a little more with the second single.  I think top 40 will give him some play, gonna be fun to watch.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Well, honestly, most pop follows a formula. That part is fine. They key is to put some of your personality into the formula and/or make it insanely catchy.

I think this is going for the same side of Adam we heard on WWFM… the “damaged goods but a softie deep down” lover. LOL. So in that sense it is countinuing the persona he already started. And it’s catchy I think. And it’s pretty. So it should make some noise.

The the negatives for me is that it seems to be kind of… missing something that makes it a bit more distinctive while still following the formula… like it doesn’t pop quite enough to be a smash. But it doesn’t need to smash anyway, it needs to get him back on radio and do well enough for a follow up to get played. I think this song has a shot at accomplishing that.

  • Anonymous

People who don’t like cookie cutter pop will not like this.  I agree with this.  But that is their problem for trying to like a pop artist without liking pop and wanting him to mould himself into what THEY want him to be.

  • http://twitter.com/Chica63 Kelly

I love it! It’s totally stuck in my head and after several listens it just gets better and better.  We all know this is the “radio friendly” song to get Trespassing in the radio door. This album is monumental for Adam, he needs to get solid foot in top 40 radio. I have NO DOUBT the album is full of amazing songs.. some will be for radio, some will not. CANT WAIT!

  • Anonymous

Gee thanks, but I still love it.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I don’t think anyone is saying this song is going to be the next Bad Romance or anything!

And I agree with you about the damaged good lover, which reading and listening to Adam interviews for two years is actually very accurate.  I mean, this song’s lyrics, which he didn’t write, sound a LOT like him.  He has talked about how he gets clingy and super dependent but also controlling and a bit freakish when he’s in a relationship and that he’s working on it.

  • Avari

Can I ask where you are pulling these comments from?

  • Anonymous

Some will like it, some won’t, and others will be indifferent.  I’m sure everyone could search online and find comments from “fans” to support their feelings.

Truer words were never spoken! That is all!

Whoever wrote it pretty much hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

  • Anonymous

Yup, and many, many positive comments from other die-hard fans could also be posted.  I’m not at all surprised by the reactions, both positive and negative, but, overall I don’t think the mainstream public won’t be as critical as a die-hard fan because they won’t be as invested and their expectations won’t be as high.  Some people will like it, others won’t – the hope is that enough like it to add it to their Ipods and/or check out the album when it’s released in March.

  • Anonymous

“People who don’t like cookie cutter pop will not like this.  I agree with this.  But that is their problem for trying to like a pop artist without liking pop and wanting him to mould himself into what THEY want him to be.”

    Very well said.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t get a chance to listen to the full song but I liked the snippet I heard yesterday. I agree it is not groundbreaking, but Adam needs to have a hit single. This should do it.

Adam goes to clubs and listens to top 40.  I think he is one person who knows what is current right now.    He likes pop music.  This is who he is.   I think his situation is different than other AI artists who do not really like pop music, (COOK, DURBIN) but yet are forced to record CHR radio friendly songs.   I can see Adam loving this song and supporting it.

  • Tess

Adam, like many Idolettes, has fans that have a preconceived notion as to what his sound should be and it runs the gamut from hard rock to soft acoustic melodies.  And, like fans everywhere, if an Artist chooses to highlight something that the fan doesn’t consider to part be of their personal bailiwick it might become difficult to accept the sound an artist has chosen.  And having those feelings doesn’t make anyone less of a fan, nor does it make their opinions representative of the fan base as a whole.

As always, its just time for me to sit back and see if the mainstream public decides whether to embrace era II from Adam.  So far it has been more miss than hit for some recent Idolettes…I can only hope that Adam bucks the trend and that his personal choices resonate with the public.

  • HotHotHot

I listened to the song and I think it’s very good! Do I think it’s the best Adam song ever? No! But it’s good for what it’s job is – to get radio play! I expect to love his non-radio songs best, but there is nothing wrong with this song!

  • CanadianFan

When I first heard this single, I thought Adam had been neutered by this song—–pretty and sweet and completely inoffensive. I realize he is doing exactly the opposite of his last rollout. People were shocked by FYE and the sexually-charged AMA performance. Now some fans are somewhat taken aback by this “safe” choice. I first felt that I wanted the old Adam back. But I understand what they are doing and it is a pretty song.

  • iani

if an Artist chooses to highlight something that the fan doesn’t consider
to part be of their personal bailiwick it might become difficult to
accept the sound an artist has chosen

And how do you know Adam has chosen to highlight that sound? I’m not a hard core fan, but I’ve liked the artist he is, the talent and the honest, artistic part of him. What’s next from RCA to choose for him, a Michal Buble sound, to experiment with different ones because he can do anything?  Aguilera did it too under RCA, from her beautiful R&B voice to compete with techno artists, and now she’s a judge.

  • Anonymous

But that is predicated on the notion that they made this choice and he had no say, which is not in evidence anywhere.  From all indications, this is what he wants, and until he says differently, there isn’t anything to suggest otherwise.

  • Anonymous

I feel confident that wherever Adam is…and if he stops in to check on fans’ reactions….and sees that the comments are all over the place, and that it has generated much debate/discussion……………….he is smiling at a job well done.

Hasn’t he always enjoyed controversy?  He has once again, managed to create that in his solid fan base.  This defines art.

Bottom line for me…is even those fans who apparently don’t care for the song for one reason or another…..STILL plan on buying the album.

Way to go Adam.  I’m proud of you, the Artist.

  • Anonymous

You do realize that Top 40 pop is EXACTLY what ADAM wants to do right?  He LOVES top 40 pop.  He has always said he did.

I’m not saying the label didn’t decide on the single, because they probably did, but Adam has gone with this direction because it is what he always wanted to do.  Now Top 40 pop ranges from electro/dance to a little pop rock.  Just like how Katy Perry moved from California Girls to Teenage Dream.

IMO, Adam has made it very CLEAR that this is what HE wants to do.  He executive produced the thing for god’s sake.  Now if some fans do not want to accept that he doesn’t want to do rock or acoustic folksy stuff then I’m sure that is not Adam’s problem.

A lot of singles get big bumps in downloads right around Christmas because a lot of people are gifted iTunes cards (or get some spending $) as a present. So I think RCA is trying to take advantage of this and get Adam some early sales

  • Anonymous

Great post, Tess.  What you said is true about his being held to a higher standard – actually, an inadvertent tribute to the magnitude of his talent.

  • Anonymous

Thank you – the voice of realism.

  • Anonymous

I totally agree with what you said. Ithink bottom line, no one can please everyone. No artists’ can make everyone like him/her. Obviously Adam is no exception. But he is absolutely my #1 fav. I love what I hear so far. I am waiting for Tuesday to download crystal clear of this song from iTunes.

  • Anonymous

Adam is still B-list when it comes to Top40, so what he needed was a good foot-in-the-door single that a large majority of PDs would feel fit into their current lineup (they’re not likely to have Adam at the forefront of their mind when selecting songs). This single fits that bill; Adam is just as much a business man as an artist, which is why RCA made him executive producer on his album.

  • Anonymous

Thanks, teri63 – another great – and sensible – post.

  • ronnie

Although I think the song is good, I agree this was his best shot at superstardom and this isn’t a “Poker Face” or “Billie Jean” or a “Since U Been Gone” or “When Doves Cry” that could really take him to the next level.  This song will not do that, that I think is some of the disappointment.

  • http://twitter.com/moni0112 Monica

This is the type of song that my local radio will play … totally
    Love adam´s voice

Hope it´s a HIT and he can tour to South America soon!!!!

  • Anonymous

Ronnie, I think you state the issue really well. I wonder if there is a song like that on the album but RCA is too timid to put it out to radio yet. Interscope did not put Poker Face out as Lady Gaga’s first single, after all.  Great songs are hard to come by though: are most hits great songs?

  • Anonymous

Adam, like many Idolettes, has fans that have a preconceived notion as to what his sound should be and it runs the gamut from hard rock to soft acoustic melodies.

I agree.  One of Adam’s challenges is that he’s so versatile that he’s got fans that want him to go — passionately want him to go — is a dozen specific and different directions.  Durbin wasn’t exactly wrong for being disappointed that Adam didn’t put out a rock album right away.  I’ve read serious articles about how Adam is “wasting” his talent by not putting out a Broadway standards album.  I’ve also read articles from an industry insider about how Adam’s big problem is being too eclectic in his sound and not sitting in a single lane.

It’s frustrating since we have the Idol performances that hint at how inventive he can be.  We have the Zodiac videos that show us how “theatrical” Adam can be.  And we have the EMA  to show how iconic Adam can be, given the opportunity.

No matter how much press Adam gets, he still feels like a secret to me, because none of it adequately conveys how incredible he can be.  BTIKM does feel like a safe choice, and I wish it had a better end to it.  (Is that something that pop producers don’t care about?  Or maybe it’s harder to blend one song into the next on radio if you have a kickass finish?)

I’m sorry.  I’m rambling.  I like the song.  I don’t love it yet, but that’s how I feel about all his singles.  The songs I love are the deep album cuts:  ”Voodoo,”  ”Broken Open,” “Soaked,” “Fever,” and “Pick U Up.”  I wish those were singles because I’d far rather hear something different and bold than “Last Friday Night” for the millionth time.  But that’s not how it works right now.

  • sagi

Just got home from work, and of course I click on it excitedly to listen, and realize it has already been removed! :’( I need to hear it!

  • Anonymous

Yes – Adam said, “I want to make it.”  If this song does it, no complaints here.  (Actually I didn’t have any to start with – think it’s just great.)

  • Anonymous

I guess I am in the minority here, I don’t have one complaint about the song. I am very happy and looking forward to his album.

  • Anonymous

There sure is a lot of buzz about this song (and the album too) so that bodes well for success.

It may have a Brunoesque sound in a way but there is no straining to reach the notes here. His voice just shines.

  • iani

You do realize that Top 40 pop is EXACTLY what ADAM wants to do right?  He LOVES top 40 pop.  He has always said he did.t

Well, I don’t follow Adam step by step, but I’ve got “him” as musician, and it’s enough for me, a little that says a lot to me. I’m not talking from the selfish point of view of my thoughts, I could say: fine, it’s a perfect song goes through top 40 in 2 weeks(so, I hope so) and get “rewarded” here. But I’m not that person and if RCA messes with him too, I’m done with so well known sophisticated label named RCA, how Awolnation says in their song “burn it down” it’s how I feel now about them. Seriously, the song is good but not enough to be a top 40 successful one and going away from the first album sound I think is not what an artists has to do, get your style and make a name from it. What RCA does,I think, is trying to put easy money in their pockets and not to care too much for the future of the artist to build a certain style. If Adam’s fans are pleased with the way his carrier goes now, it’s fine with me. How Tess has said earlier , he has a good, smart management and hope they know well how to gear his professional path better than RCA Idols Team does.

  • justshootme

Scooch over bridgette, I’ll sit by you, lol.  No complaints here, just that it can’t get on my radio fast enough!

  • mmb

Fwiw Poker Face wasn’t Gagas first single, MJ was already a superstar when Billie Jean came out, same with Prince re When Doves Cry and since you been gone was the second single off Breakaway – that era started with Breakaway, a safe mid-tempo song….

  • Anonymous

Make room for me too, lol!

As an Idol fan who is not a fan of Adam’s, Broken Open and Pick U Up(that is the one where he cackles at the end of the song, right?) were among some of my most played songs on my ipod some time ago.  I’d like to know why Adam is inconsistent in his creativity?  I don’t think anyone is expecting him to make rock music.  I think his fans just want him to offer up to his cutting edge image, not go with the flow/trends.  That does not necessarily need to be rock music.  But it sure as heck should not be overdone mediocre pop melodies.

  • Anonymous

Great songs are hard to come by though: are most hits great songs?

No, but most great songs have something about it which makes it memorable. This one, sadly, does not…..

  • Anonymous

Love it…it has a Top 40 feel to it and I think that is exactly what Adam needs at this point.  I’m more of an emotional music listener and I can relate to the lyrics of this song and can see grabbing my partners hand when this song comes on the radio as a way to tell my own story. For me, that is what makes a good pop song.  Can you relate, do you see yourself in the story, does it deliver the emotion you want to convey and it does all of those things for me.  Some songs have great beats/sound and you don’t pay any attention to the lyrics but you just like the way the song makes you feel (Foster the People’s, “Pump up the Kicks) some songs have great lyrics Bruno Mars…well anything..LOL) and some songs are just for dancing and having a great time (LMFAO) but in every case they strike an emotional nerve that people relate to and I think anyone who has ever been involved in a relationship can relate to these lyrics and feel the vulnerability of the bridge.

  • Anonymous

When Adam sings it’s one of the very few times, in today’s music, that I actually listen to the lyrics.  As a professional singer relative said – he “performs” the words as well as sings them.  He does that in this track.

  • http://twitter.com/Susanatfox Susan

Love this, this is sure to do well, it is sticking in my head, the hook, sure sign this is radio friendly and that is what we want, to hear Adam night and day on our radio, good job and thanks for the link

I too love PUU – one of my favorites. But it would NOT get radio play. Like most, if not all, artists – and that includes Idols – Adam needs success on radio.

  • ScorpioBSB

LOVE THE SONG!!! LOVE THE VOICE!!!

  • Anonymous

I think your expectations from major labels, or RCA in particular are too high. Especially a label to needs some Top 40 hits to compete with other labels who are doing it better right now.

  • Anonymous

    I love Voodoo. ;)

Very much looking forward to the deep album cuts.

  • Anonymous

OMG SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! I fucking love it!!!! it’s sooooo earwormy and very now!! the backbeat and the skrillexy elements of the song is fab! i can’t wait to sing to this out loud in my car!! and Adam’s voice is gorgeous on this! that slow syncopated bridge is to die for! i can’t wait for the remixes of this song to come out!

  • iani

I expect from them “a little but good” not “a lot and cheap”. How I’ve said few days ago about a band, a successful song doesn’t necessarily build a career, it’s a  mil.$ song not a mil.$ artist, make the artist and he/she brings the top 40 success, see Pink, how many years she has needed to get her style/sound and now everything she comes out with is gold.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

Seems like most of Lambert’s fans are using the radio play excuse for this single.  I can see their point, but I still can’t see why Adam could not find a a way to find or create a song that has just a bit of his own ‘image’ in it.
He has ‘JesseJ syndrome’.  Charismatic performers, but we can’t tell who they are as artists. JJ’s got three singles- one in which she sounds like Rihanna, the other like Christina, and another mediocre song that could’ve been sung by anybody(Pricetag).  Interestingly enough, her radio play and sales success has been okay at best.

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

Really?  I knew this was Adam singing in 3 notes!  Not like JJ at all IMO. It is a very good song sung exceptional well and we shall all see shortly if it is a smash or not.

Going for radio play is very important for success and longevity.  It is smart of Adam actually.

  • Anonymous

It’s funny that people keeping saying the song is like a Bruno Mars song when apparently it was written in 2009, before Bruno Mars had a radio hit, and thus before there was a Bruno Mars “sound.”

  • Anonymous

Let’s wait to hear all of his songs from the album before passing judgement on his creativity.  I’m sure his label was pushing for this as the first single and I’m willing to bet Adam really wanted “Trespassing” as his first.  He has to compromise somewhat to get ahead!

  • Anonymous

Well the the song is apparently gone, but I listened to the snippet and I’m not sure where people are getting Bruno Mars…It doesn’t sound at all like Bruno, and it doesn’t sound like anything he would sing. Is the connection because it is midtempo..because there are a lot of songs that are midtempo LOL.

  • Anonymous

Not making an “excuses” for BTIKM! Not need for an excuse. I happen to love the song & his vocal on it. It’s a Top 40 single so not a time for anything innovative. And I can’t think of anything Adam’s done where he sounds like another performer. Certainly not Bruno! He is uniquely Adam.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

I’m interested in hearing how the rest of the album sounds, and I hope it will be good.  Especially with the album title, it’s too easy to make jokes should the album not be good.  The reviews will be titled “Please take a ‘pass’ on Trespassing”.

  • Anonymous

No need to excuse this single, I think it is fantastic, but I like a lot of pop music and I think it a very good chance to do well on the charts. I don’t think anyone sounds like Adam and I don’t have any problem telling who Adam is as an artist. He is an amazing vocalist who can sing who can move fluidly between rocking with Queen to dance/pop. I agree he is very charismatic though.

  • Anonymous

I’d like to know why Adam is inconsistent in his creativity?  I don’t think anyone is expecting him to make rock music.  I think his fans just want him to offer up to his cutting edge image, not go with the flow/trends.

Well, he’s better when he doesn’t play it safe.  But when you don’t play it safe, you can get an EMA performance…. or you can get an AMA performance. :)

I love ballsy Adam, but I don’t blame him in the least for starting Era 2 with an earwormy song that will get radio play.  It’s not like this is going to be what the whole album sounds like.

And, observing the trials of other Idols (just because it’s Idols that I like to keep track of), it’s not easy to pick a song that can be done in a variety of ways over the promotion period.  You have to be able to sing it live.  You have to be able to strip it down for a radio station’s small performance space.   You have to be able to make it big for the SYTYCD, DWTS, or X-F stage.

So, “safe” Adam on the radio, and ballsy Adam in concert.  I’ll take it — and hope for the day when ballsy and radio can come to a meeting place.  Maybe I’m nostalgic, but there was a day when “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Major Tom” could be radio hits.  That’s the world Adam should be living in.

  • Anonymous

Well, looks like you are all set.

  • mmb

I don’t think anyone is or needs to make excuses for this song! It’s a pop/hac radio- friendly earwormy song that Adam sounds great on! Hope it gets lots of radio play. It’s been getting good buzz. We will just have to wait and see if it is a hit… Personally, I really like it

  • Anonymous

After the quiet opening, Adam’s words, “cold as ice,” are thrilling – an unmistakable voice.  Unique.   Who else could sing this song with such beauty and emotion?  In a class by himself.

  • Anonymous

IMO, Adam has created an image.  He is known for his unique voice, great range and for being one of the only contemporary male artists who can pretty much do it all, from singing with Queen (to much acclaim, I might add) to releasing radio-friendly pop.  As far as his pop singles have gone, I think they’ve stayed pretty in-line with each other stylistically, but, really, I don’t see why it’s expected that he stick to one sound.  If he can do it all, why not?  The incredible voice is the same, and that’s his “image-maker,” IMO.

  • ronnie

Adam is not really a songwriter so he is only going to be as good as the songs he is offered.  What I fear is that he surrounds himself with a certain group that is just not going to offer him their best songs- those will go to Britney, Katy, Kelly, etc., and he is always going to get 2nd hand songs but the group he aligns himself will close off the group to outsiders so they get to peddle him their 2nd hand goods.  He will have go outside that clique to find some really good songs.  He got lucky with the P!nk song.

  • cosem

First of all I really really like the song. I was partial at first but after a few listens I’m hooked. And I’m one of those Adam fans that disliked FYE and needed a couple of live performances to love WWFM. My favorite part is the pre-chorus with the strong drum beat. Love it!. As for the Bruno comparisons I think imo are coming mostly due to the way Adam sings the song. It has a slight rnb vibe that wasn’t there in his previous songs. Also, except one part in the chorus there isn’t a lot of wailing. Adam sings it mostly in his head voice which is imo his most “radio friendly” voice.
And if I could think of one song that BTIKM reminds me of is Ke$ha’s Hungover, mostly production-wise. Overall, I think it’s a good lead single with radio potential. JMHO and all that.

  • Anonymous

How is BTIKM a second-hand song?  It was clearly written for someone else to pick up because Claude Kelly couldn’t even handle the range of his own ditty.

  • Avari

“I’d like to know why Adam is inconsistent in his creativity? ”

LOL! What the heck does “inconsistent in his creativity” even mean?? I’d get pretty bored with someone who was consistent in their creativity, I think.

Moving on….I listened to this once this morning, and was on the “great song choice for a lead single, even if I’m not crazy about the song” team….but I’ve had the damn thing in my head all day long. Just one listen! That is an earworm right there.  Well done Adam!

It’s also a singers song. He’ll absolutely slay this live. Which was one of the big problems with releasing FYE as a single. Not going to repeat that mistake again.

  • Anonymous

Good luck to Adam with this song. If audio-induced euphoria is not on the table, there is always a numbers game for this chart junky to enjoy.

I remembered what Adam said, if you don’t like his music go buy the other guy music. So I don’t think Adam will worry too much. J/S ;D.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think we know whether or not Adam is a songwriter. He has songwriting credits on most of the songs on this album (although not BTIKM) so I think we will just have to wait until the album is released.
As far as 2nd hand goods HaHa – this song is was better than Kelly’s MKIA IMO.

  • Tess

I hear the exact same sentiments for virtually every Idol…the choices for a single are almost always wrong and the label is intent on destroying the Artist by releasing such and such a song.  And the idea that the Idolette is being forced to release a song, always against their better judgment, is also prevalent in the bubble.

And almost always the bubble has lots of suggestions as to what the Idolette should release and why…. and if said Idol followed the advise of the bubble they would immediately be rewarded with a number 1 and the best selling song of the century.  Trouble is, that there are as many suggestions for that number 1 song as there are bubblettes.

I guess I’m just pragmatic enough to believe that the choice for a single release has a lot to do with current trends and sounds, the intended audience, the ease that a Singer can sing a particular song in public (without having to resort to lip syncing), if the song can be made into a video (without having to resort to just singing the song as though it is a concert), and sometimes (especially in Pop) whether the songwriters are held in favor by the general public.

We have all seen what happens when some Artists choose to release something that is special in their hearts but that doesn’t hit a chord with the public….those songs, though often “great” just wither away.  The music industry and Singers don’t survive if they aren’t willing to “play the game” to a certain extent.  And, historically, if a “great” song is on an album, oftentimes it becomes a hit, not because it is released as a single, but because, through word of mouth it finds its way into everyone’s thoughts and eventually back doors itself onto radio and the “hit parade”.

  • ronnie

Umm…. the key could have easily been taken down if someone else wanted it.  Melodies are very flexible that way.

  • Anonymous

I think when you hear things like “flawless” and “ear candy” and other hyperboles that get said before a song is released it is easy to get disappointed. I like the song but don’t think it is quite living up to that hype. Regardless that’s done to stoke the fans’ expectations and they are going to buy the song anyway, lol! Radio seems totally ready to embrace this song, from the tweets from DJs etc, so I think it will be a huge hit for him.
As for FYE being a flop, I love that song-it is my favorite from the album. I think it is a much better song than this one and I wish it had not been pulled in favor of WWFM.

  • Anonymous

I have to admit I don’t get why the publicist and others say they have been dancing to it. It’s really ot a song to dance to.

Seriously.. It’s not a disco dance song like IIHY but you can help but to move your body (dance) to that crazy beat. :)

  • sagi

I found it! I listened to the whole thing(about 5x now) and I really like it! A lot better than a lot of stuff I’ve been hearing on radio! And it does have a beat that makes you want to move. Kind of in a sexy kind of way ;)

  • Anonymous

ronnie, when you said “firecrackeer like Adam” did you mean the Adam the rocker?? well yeah.. Adam can rocking with Queen like nobody else and they will call him if they need to borrow his voice, but Adam always wants to make pop music.

Yeh…I too wonder what is considered a dance tune.  Guess you need to be hurling yourself all over the dance floor like a whirling dervish in order to have a song be considered dancey.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I realize this, but saying it’s a “second hand song” implies that it was written for a particular person who discarded it.  We don’t know that that’s the case.  It may have just been something written and shelved until someone someday picked it up.

Adam is not really a songwriter so he is only going to be as good as the songs he is offered.

We have heard this a million times. Unfortunately for most so called songwriters in Idol bubble, it hasn’t work out too well for them, so I don’t even want to go there.

He got lucky with the P!nk song.

WWFM is one of my least favorite songs on FYE. I don’t know if you ever care to listen to the whole album, the best ones are Mr. Lambert wrote or co-wrote. I can see the same thing happens in this new album. Which means, he’ll be as good as he can create. Even for that so so song of WWFM, he sure sang the hell out of it live with many variations, that’s the beauty of Adam’s creativity. What has luck to do with it?
That said, I love the new song. Much better than WWFM. I’ll enjoy so much more this time when Mr. Lambert starts to promote it.

  • Anonymous

Actually Adam is a songwriter, he wrote several songs on his last album and he has said he co-wrote on most of the songs on Trespassing, so, wrong. And as far as surrounding himself with a certain group that will only give him second rate songs, um please provide some context. And, does this group include Pharrell, Sparro, Costa, Mars or are these what you consider part of the “clique”, lol?

For Yor Entertainment, the song, fit Adam’s identity perfectly.  I’m also sorry that that single did not make it on the charts.

Holy crap, the AO version sounds even better than all the other downloads I have heard. His voice is heaven!

My bet is that this song will be a Pop hit. And, more importantly, it will get radio airplay and help drive sales of Adam’s album.

I am pleased that his vocals are so clean — and his backing vocals as the song builds are wonderful.

And since the album is being released on 3/20, they have plenty of time to move it up the chart before the release.

    —-

Regarding Adam not really being a songwriter — he co-wrote all but a couple of songs on this album and 5 on FYE. Did they just give him the songwriting credit because he is nice?

  • Anonymous

Did I say I LOVE the song? It’ll be a smash hit for Adam. What a way to start the era 2!

  • Anonymous

Finally got a chance to listen, and I love it!

  • http://twitter.com/ucla2014 lovemehateme

Uhh, well…lol. Sounds pretty similar to the demo, which I was right about. There really wasn’t much to change up there. As for the single, uhh LOL. I don’t even know. I’m going to bet that this doesn’t represent how the rest of the album is, but that’s so confusing. Adam confuses me with the direction he wants to go in with music all the time…and by that, I mean, why not come out with a song that represents your album, assuming that this doesn’t, as opposed to coming out with a song that doesn’t at all.

& no, I don’t like the song. & just like I predicted that FYE wasn’t going to be a hit, I’m going to come out and say that this isn’t going to be a hit either.

It’s a little bit catchy, I’ll give it that, but a hit? No way.

  • ronnie

I’ve heard his songwriting prowess on “Beg for Mercy,” not too impressive, he doesn’t seem to have a natural talent for it, I would definitely say he probably did not add the bulk of his so-called songwriting credits last time, but I don’t want to argue about that, it’s subjective in a way, and it’s just my opinion, but considering this new single is not his song either, I doubt RCA is that confident in his songwriting talent, either.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UHPGJRMWP6PIBC7LA7SUPCOKTY josephp

Eh it’s ok. Not really sticking in my head though. Hopefully the rest of the album is better. As disappointing as FYE did on the charts that song felt like adam, this one for some reason just doesn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/ucla2014 lovemehateme

    Agreed, it feels OOC.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kaya-Burke/100002926607733 Kaya Burke

I don’t think this song is going anywhere near the charts either.  I’m usually right about these things.
Having listened to the song again, I’ve changed my mind about the melody- it’s actually pretty well written. My issue is still with the contrived manner in which Adam delivers the song. He sounds like a demo singer who was hired to sing a random track. There’s none of the Adam energy in it.

  • http://twitter.com/s_sepia s_sepia

those songs are like 5 years old, i don’t think you can really base your opinion of adam’s skills on them. you do know that people tend to evolve and get better at things as time passes and they get more experience and practice? especially since this time around adam has A++ songwriting partners too.

  • YeahRight

Regarding Adam not really being a songwriter — he co-wrote all but a
couple of songs on this album and 5 on FYE. Did they just give him the
songwriting credit because he is nice?

You can add a period and get a songwriting credit.

  • Tess

Personally, I don’t recall any Idolettes that have yet “proven” their song-writing prowress with a number 1 song, much less a # 1 album (except Daughtry, I believe, and let me know who else has done it, I’m interested).  And, yes, I do admire those Artists like Elton John that can continually come up with great melodies…but he is only half of a “team”.  Somebody who can do it all: sing, write, produce, all the time, and #1 type successfully is a very rare bird.  Wish the universe had endowed me with that type of talent.

  • http://twitter.com/ucla2014 lovemehateme

Me too, not something to be gloat worthy about in this case scenario because I actually wanted Adam to do really well with this album and single lol.

Agreed completely with what you’re saying about Adam sounding like a demo singer. It feels…so not Adam. Lost kind of in the background of the music. It’s sad to describe it that way, because Adam’s voice is nothing like that, but that’s how it feels like.

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

I hope RCA’s safe strategy with lead singles works out for him, but personally I’m not really feeling this one.

  • Tess

You can add a period and get a songwriting credit

That might be a little extreme.

  • http://twitter.com/ucla2014 lovemehateme

lol, that is true. It doesn’t take much to get songwriting credits it seems nowadays. Not sure how it was like before, but I’m going to assume, and hope, that it wasn’t like this.

I do believe that Adam did contribute writing to his album though, I don’t believe that he just added a period, like an example you stated, and that was all he contributed to his album as far as songwriting goes.

  • Anonymous

Well, maybe those of you who are so sure that it’s going to tank, but still want to see Adam do well, will be pleasantly surprised.

  • ronnie

Sadly, I don’t think this is a smash song after hearing it now a few times.  I hope he has a backup plan.

  • YeahRight

That might be a little extreme.

No, it’s not.  You don’t have to do much to get a songwriting credit these days.

  • Anonymous

Oh I think this is a dance song all right, just not Foxtrott.

  • http://twitter.com/idolfanatic44 idol fanatic

It’s a pleasant song but unmemorable for Pop radio. I think it has potential to do great on HAC as songs by Adam tend to do, but I don’t think there’s anything here to capture the attention of CHR pds. With a strong push from RCA I could see it going top 20 but not much higher than that. If his previous singles couldn’t go top 10 on Pop when he had much more hype and attention, I have a strong this feel this won’t either.

  • askance

“No, it’s not.  You don’t have to do much to get a songwriting credit these days.”

One thing I feel pretty confident about is RCA’s level of support for this song.  First, the heads of the label seem to love it.  And, unlike the FYE era, I really get the impression they took the song directly to PDs for feedback.  There is a lot of buzz, which is a good way to start.

On a selfish level, I am just happy that I love the song.  I’d want Adam to do well regardless, but I would have been really disappointed if I wasn’t loving the single.

  • Nele621

I just now heard Adam’s new song, and from one listen, his vocals are pretty nice. I have to admit, his vocals are about the best (well, second best) of all the  idols.  He also has nice phrasing. I will have to listen again before I comment on the song itself.

I’m still not a fan of Adam, however.

  • ronnie

I feel there is buzz for Adam himself coming back, but not for this particular song, which was previously on the internet as a demo.  I mean, I haven’t heard anyone saying, ‘you’ve got to hear this amazing song!’ but everyone seems to be excited Adam is coming back with something.

  • Anonymous

LOL.  ITA.  And my particular snowflake is Country. This was fun to dive into a different kind of genre.

I’m just happy there is both buzz here in the States and internationally for the new single. It’s going to be interesting to see what type of promo they have set up for him in the next coming months.

The Sound Cloud audio is soooo good! I can’t stop listening to it. I especially love the harmonies that he does towards the end of the song. And i freakin love that pounding beat with the church organ-y sound. <3 to quote Bruno Mars this song is in that "Key of What The Fuck" register! LOL i can't wait for Adam to perform this song live! He's gonna kill it! it's like if WWFM and Sleepwalker mated and had a baby.

  • CindyM

I love the song! The high quality stream on AO is so goood, much better than the stream posted before.

I kind of like the reaction here. Makes me feel even more confident about the songs chances and I was really confident before!

As far as songwriting, two of my faves off of FYE were Broken Open and Down the Rabbithole, both cowritten by Adam and very him. I’ll take the praise of those who’ve written with him like Sam Sparro & Greg Wells who both praised him:)

Again, love the song, can’t wait to buy it and looking forward to the album!!

It’s a figure of speech.  It basically means you don’t have to do much to get a songwriting credit.

That AO stream version is just awesome! I can’t stop listening to it. Thank you Claude Kelly for an amazing song that Adam is just killing on!

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, even if it is wrong.  LOL – just kidding. There is no way for an artist to create a song that everyone loves. With all due respect, though, I do think this will be a very big hit as it has that catchy hook that gets in your head.  Personally I love it but again, everyone’s entitled to express their own thoughts!!

It has nothing to do with different genre, it’s all about Adam Lambert.

I know a lot of people have said sounds like others.. personally with my eyes closed I would have recognized this as Adam… and I think that releasing the stuff everyone else is releasing is a smart move.. first you get HUGE.. then you do your thing.. if he just does his thing he may never get bigger than he is now..and what a loss to the world that would be… as for Katy, Gaga, and Brittney the only one who can sing live (no auto-tune) and sound good is Gaga…

  • Anonymous

She co-wrote it along with Kara DioGuardi, Martin Frederiksen and Luke Laird.  The song itself didn’t go #1 on country (got to #2 there), but the album did go #1 though it’s first week and spent like 2 months in the top #10 Hot 100 and #2 on Country Albums chart. She won a songwriting award for it, I believe.

  • Anonymous

I love Adam and I love the song. His vocals soar in the chorus and I love the bridge. I’m not even going to try to guess where this song will wind up on the charts. It’s not really my concern. I’m not an expert and I find it amusing when people try to predict whether songs will be hits or not. I’m just glad I love and I can’t wait for the rest of the album!

  • Nele621

Yeah, song has a good hook. Good beat. Sounds like a tune people in their late teens and twenties would like. Again, impressed by the vocals. I like it better than WWFM.

tbh the thought is frustrating cuz it didn’t happen! DTRH and Voodoo, plus Broken Open, are my favorites from fye.

  • YeahRight

Not taking that review seriously based on who wrote it.

  • Emmy

OMG the HQ soundcloud is glorious! His voice (which is unmistakably Adam, not anyone else, and not affected) is to die for. The bridge is amazing, and the layering of his vocals in the second half is just so pretty. Only Adam should sing background for himself.

  • Anonymous

An honest opinion as an Adam fan: I don’t love it, but I grew to like it after about five listens. Of course, Adam’s voice makes it better.

I don’t see this becoming a radio smash though.

  • Anonymous

That’s alright! What matters is that it’s seriously on Yahoo’s music page and making it’s rounds through the internet.

  • Moria Polonius

    Musically or lyrically?

  • http://twitter.com/svmreiter Susan Reiter

OMG, I saw that Perez has the song up on his site so I came right over here.  The full song is Adam with all of  his glorious voice – so beautiful I can’t believe it’s from the same 27 second snippet!  I hope he gets to sing it live somewhere – maybe American Idol!  It will be a great live song and that is his biggest strength!

  • Anonymous

It’s really cool to see how much buzz the song has, and that so many unbiased sources think it’s very good and very ear-wormy (gross adjective, but w/e) and that Adam sounds great. :)

I could see the song doing really well on pop (and hac, though that’s easier)–it fits in very well with what I hear on my station.  The more rhythmic-leaning pop stations might not play it–the kind that don’t even play kelly–but if the buzz holds and the positive reactions continue, that would be great. Maybe it’ll work out, maybe it won’t, but I like how things are going so far. :)

As for the song itself, I think this writer was mostly right: The
most emotionally potent moment is the bridge, where the richer synths yield to
a tinkling piano and the lyrics turn unexpectedly vulnerable: “I get kinda
dark/Let it go too far/I can be obnoxious at times/But try and see my heart.”
It’s a lovely turn, with a candor that’s refreshing to hear in pop music, and
it makes the song truly memorable.

In my piece last week for MTV
Buzzworthy, I wrote that “My sources tell me that ‘Better Than I
Know Myself’ is a piece of flaw-free radio candy, a stunning midtempo track
with a powerhouse chorus that’s like a pumped-up ‘Whataya Want From Me,’ and it
should cement Adam’s place in the pop A-list.” I’m sticking by this, especially
the latter statement. “Better Than I Know Myself” is more radio-ready as
anything on his last album, and I would be stunned if it didn’t perform excellently
on the charts, and catapult Adam way further into the realm of superstardom
    than he’s ever been before.

I mean, allowing for some hyperbole about flaw-free and superstar, I think he’s right. :)  It’s not revolutionary, if anything on pop radio could be called that, but it’s really genuinely good and distinctive and “him” and Adam is a great song interpreter and the song could do very well for him.  And if it does, maybe Trespassing or the other unnamed potential single will be the second single, and something even more distinctively Adam will be on the radio. :)

non tl;dr is personally, I like it more than WWFM, which I enjoyed but never felt compelled to put on repeat.  This song reminds me more of Halo (I wouldn’t say it’s as good as that, but not super far off) in how beautiful-but-hooky it is.

  • Anonymous

Voodoo and DTRH were some of my favorites as well. I get frustrated when the best songs on albums are the bonus tracks (and this happens more often than not, especially for Idols). Alas, it shall never be, but at least we got the awesome purple coat on tour with the song.

Hopefully the video for BTIKM (and any other singles from Trespassing) will make us forget the missed possibilities from FYE.

  • Moria Polonius

There was nothing to hear until yesterday.

  • Anonymous

And while I think this song sounds “Adam”, I am looking forward to hearing the ones he co-wrote since those were some of my favorites on the first album.  But he seems to have been able to pick songs that sounded like him even if he did’t help write them, which is awesome.

it’s funny, most of the time, singles are my least favorite songs on an album.  An exception would be Adele–her singles are amazing, and then with maybe a couple exceptions, most of the songs on the album are much more generic and less memorable.  So if I like the single this much, then the album itself could be pretty fantastic. :)

As someone in her early twenties, I like it. :)  I’ll have to play it for my mom, see if it spans the generations, lol.

And I agree, I like it better than WWFM.  Whether that means it’ll do better than WWFM, I don’t know.  But if it did even close to as good, that would be awesome.

  • Anonymous

It sounds like there were no live instruments used on this, so it will be interesting to see how they rearrange it to perform live.

Adam sounds great, as usual.  the hook is solid, and I really like the bridge. It isn’t sticking in my head yet, though — which could be a good thing (I hate it when I can’t shake certain songs from my head) or a bad thing (not unique enough?). I’ll have to see what happens after I listen to it a few more times.

All in all, I think Adam will do well with this single. The label is obviously behind it, and from the tweets I’ve seen, it seems like a lot of stations are ready to jump on board and spin it pretty quick. I don’t know if it’ll be a smash hit, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if it does similarly as well as WWFM (that is, sell between 1-2 million & chart in Top 15 on both pop an Hot AC)

  • Anonymous

I wonder if they’re going to do a specific radio premier or if all the stations will be able to start playing it whenever they want.

I remember those Z100 djs saying they’d heard from non-fans that the single was great, so hopefully that bodes well for z100 playing it.

  • Anonymous

An amazingly beautiful song! Very radio friendly which is what Adam needs  with this debut off his new album. Can not wait to hear Adam sing it live. He is one of very few that sound better live!

It took me several listens to like it…   I kind of like it now :-)
Adam does sound really great on this, of course !

Not really my style of music, but this new stream is much better then what I heard this morning (so there is hope for this song after all).

Hoping radio embraces it, and Adam has a hit, and then we can move on to the next single …   ;-)

  • callmecrazy

The only thing I didn’t like about the song is that it ended!

  • Kirsten

Personally, I don’t recall any Idolettes that have yet “proven” their
    song-writing prowress with a number 1 song, much less a # 1 album
(except Daughtry, I believe, and let me know who else has done it, I’m
    interested).

Daughtry has had songs go number one on airplay charts including “Home” which he wrote all by himself. Kelly’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and “Already Gone” both went to number 1 on HAC (and BTHE was number 2 for many weeks behind Mariah on Pop).  She might have had others that went to number 1 as well (she usually co-writes). Chris Sligh co-wrote a number one country song. Jared Cotter co-wrote Jay Sean’s “Down” that went to number one on Pop (and other charts and other countries). He’s had a fair amount of success writing.

Probably your Idol songwriters with the most success are Daughtry, Kelly, Jared Cotter and Carrie.

oooh this is Beautiful!!! I especially love the way his voice is layered at the end. It’s so gorgeous!!!

  • Derek McGovern

It amuses me no end that we have the same people repeatedly posting their “disappointment” here that BTIKM is not up to scratch—that it’s doomed to chart failure, etc. While their concern is touching, I can assure these prophets of (gleeful) doom that their posts are in vain. This song has hit written all over it. It’s catchy, it’s brilliantly sung (and the vocals alone are going to ensure that people sit up and notice it), and it’s not nearly as generic as the trolls would have us believe.

Add me and my pop-loving friends to the growing list of people who prefer BTIKM to any of Adam’s previous singles.

  • Anonymous

Well I first listened to the song this AM and now 12 hours later it’s still in my head.  That’s a good sign.  Honestly, it’s not the most exciting song, but usually those are the songs that seem to do well on CHR so I’m hopeful.  What’s good is that people seem to be excited that Adam Lambert is releasing new material.

  • fuzzywuzzy

If Adam is the EP, then this is the music that he wants to produce.  He will find/retain his audience based on that, which is how it should be regardless of what anyone says.

  • Anonymous

How is this a secondhand song? Unless they are collaborating directly with an artist or have been hired by an artist’s rep (mgr, agent, label, etc) to write specifically for that artist, most songwriters don’t write for anyone in particular. They write something and then they pitch it to publishers, music supervisors, A&R people, etc., often depending on what artists/projects are looking for submissions and on what artist(s) the writer thinks the song would appeal to.

  • HotHotHot

This song is so much better on the official sites! You can hear the layers so much better!! I wonder how soon the radio stations will start playing it? Is there an official debut planned??

  • Anonymous

Yay Adam! Great song. Catchy and touching. I like it better than some of the FYE songs including WWFM (but not FYE lol.) I hope it takes off like wildfire.

    Happy Holidays to All~

  • Tess

Thanks, Kirsten.  I didn’t think the list of Idolettes with big song-writing hits was very long.  And to be honest I don’t remember Jared Cotter.

Interesting thing, of the others mentioned only Chris Sligh billed himself as a singer-songwriter.  The others are known for their singing first and foremost.  Sometimes it seems that songwriting is a much more difficult part of the industry to really get a toe-hold in…especially on the elite level.  For the most part the Idols who are known as singer-songwriters still haven’t broken through so I think I’ll cut those who are “trying” a bit of slack.

  • http://twitter.com/ncabalona Nathaniel Cabalona

Maybe I’m just crazy, but I can swear that Adam sounds like David Archuleta in this song. Still a really good single, though.

  • Tess

Since, for me, Archie and Adam are probably two of the finest voices to emerge from American Idol that is probably a complement to both men.  Don’t think David has quite the range Adam demonstrates in this particular song but both men have extremely good vocal skills.

  • YeahRight

Totally.  Like I said earlier in this post, I can hear David Archuleta singing this song.

  • sagi

Personally, when I hear a new tune I like, I find myself asking “who sings this song?!” not “who wrote this song?!” but maybe that’s just me.

  • Derek McGovern

The “secondhand song” claim is a sure sign of desperation by the
Adam-bashers here. (Rickey had earlier tried this tactic on his site,
expressing his “concern” that this was not a new song.) BTIKM was never
released commercially by anyone prior to this recording, and the
existing demo by Claude Kelly was just that: a demo. Besides, the
ultimate proof of the pudding is whether the performer makes a song
his/her own, not whether others have recorded it. Just think of Elvis
Presley and some of the songs that are associated with him (“In the
Ghetto,” for example) despite the fact that he was not the first person
    to record them.

Time for the Lambert detractors to rethink their strategy, I’d say.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t realize the song has been around since 2009. I think whoever said Adam is getting the second rate material from grade A songwriters is on the $. Still even the not Grade A stuff from someone who grinds out hits can be a good thing. Radio will probably at least give it a listen.

My rusty crystal ball says a decent hit on HAC but not as much potential on Pop. I don’t think it’ll do as well as WWFM. Anyway looking forward to this going for adds.

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

I hear ya Derek. I would never have said I was an Adam fan. I liked WWFM and really liked Can’t Let You Go that was never released in the US on the FYE CD.  I do really like BTIKM.  It is an earworm for sure. The vocals are impecable.  I think it will be a huge hit.

It’s not usually a good sign when fans have to play a song over and over again before they like it. Most regular folk will give a song 30 secs. max and then change the channel if it doesn’t grab them.

The reason a radio station plays a song (what seems like a continuous loop for some people) is the fact that songs become better liked the more they are heard.  I can think of gaggles of songs that didn’t strike me the first 30 seconds or the first 5 times I heard them that have now become some of my favorites.  And the industry is also aware that some people don’t “get” a song on first listen…that is why they endlessly stream so that people can make that judgment.

Besides, at least peeps are listening and then finding they like it.  The problem arises when peeps say the more they hear something the worst it gets.

  • Anonymous

Then it’s good that many fans and non-fans (djs, reviewers, etc.) liked it immediately. :)

I did, and while i’m just one person, I am pop radio’s main demographic.  If the positive reactions continue, I could see the song doing really well on pop and hac.

Not taking that review seriously based on who wrote it.

Yeahright, that’s a legitimate sentiment. I rarely take seriously ANYTHING written by someone who has made their bias or agenda perfectly clear.  But, I don’t mind if Lindsay wants to fangirl.  Adam’s fans will squee over her article. Adam’s detractors will smirk.  But, the important thing is that the title let’s the many, many people casually flipping through Yahoo entertainment  know that Adam Lambert has a new single coming out Tuesday.  It’s the same with any bad reviews that might be floating around. (Haven’t seen any…but I’m sure they’re out there somewhere.)  It’s all press at this point.  The listeners and buyers will make their own decisions.

JPFan, I’ve never used the phrase “You owe me a new keyboard” before this.  But, I’m sending you the bill.  :) I’ve got rum and Coke all over mine from doing a spit-take.  You know if you love a song in 30 seconds? Every single time?  If that’s really the case, you’re missing out on a lot of great songs you never gave a second chance.  I don’t think there’s a single song on my “favorite” list that I loved right away. In some cases, I didn’t grow to love them until I heard them decades later as I was too immature or the type of music was just too new and foreign to me when it first came out.  Some of the songs I loved the first time I heard them grew tiresome by the 10th or 20th listen. Repetitive airplay has made me rethink both my like and dislike for a lot of songs on pop radio.  For me, this reaction from Adam’s fans is completely natural.   Of course, no one ever accused me of being regular folk, so there’s that….;)

Really hearing the superb production on this song now with the AO and Soundcloud versions. That drum backbeat feels like a heartbeat and the synth treatment at the beginning and the end really make it stand out. The best though is the layering of Adam’s vocals on the second part of the bridge, that just sounds so sexy! This is going to sound so good on the radio!

I see this song to be a very popular with younger population and will be a radio hit. I like it much better then Whatya want from me. It will be very radio friendly and smash hit for sure. LOVE IT.

  • Anonymous

This song has hit written all over it. It’s catchy, it’s brilliantly sung (and the vocals alone are going to ensure that people sit up and notice it), and it’s not nearly as generic as the trolls would have us believe.

People said that the demo was catchy too, and a surefire pop hit, even though it’s the type of song that would have been relegated to Urban AC, and even then, it would only do well if it was song by a select group of male artists.  My point is that the song will receive too much praise from some, and too much negativity from others.

I doubt that it is a surefire hit, it will need as much luck, and radio support as any other song.  The good news is that RCA’s radio promotions department is now being run by one of the best executives in the business, unlike with FYE, Adam is going to do radio promo from the start, and RCA has already done a lot of work to convince PDs to play the song.  It looks like they may already have a lot of PDs on board, or maybe it just seems that way because djs have tweeted about hearing some songs.  I still think that the song will have a harder time at pop stations, but maybe it will be one of the more HAC leaning songs that pop stations will play.

@jpfan re “It’s not usually a good sign when fans have to play a song over and over again before they like it,” I think most humans would disagree with that based on experience. Fans who confessed to needing repeated listens were simply being honest. Fact is, most people need to hear a piece of music more than once to fall in love with it. It could be Ke$ha or Bach, it doesn’t matter. You need to hear most music more than once to get it. Top 40 knows this, and abuses the knowledge. There are too many repeats on pop.

Thank you!  I’ve been thinking that ever since this thing leaked.  I just didn’t say anything because I figured I’d get jumped on.

When you go to places like Rate the Music you get about 30 seconds of the song to rate. And radio stations use that info to decide which songs to play. Of course familiarity is very important but even brand new songs are rated with a 30 sec. clip. At least I think it’s 30 secs. could be less or more but it’s NEVER the whole song.

  • LaurelG

Just checking back in and, SURPRISE!, AO has thrown up their hands and released a stream of the full single.  LOL, that was fast.  In less than 12 hours it went from a leak in Malaysia to being streamed on Adam’s official site in the US.  The power of the worldwide web.

Yep, still loving this song.  I think it’s a brilliant choice for a first single.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know, but I don’t think too many people thought the demo was catchy.  I sure didn’t. The demo was a deathly slow ballad and badly sung (sorry Claude; but I think he knows this).  Now this version, I love.  It is mid-tempo with a soaring chorus.  Who knows what will happen, but I think RCA has done their homework this time.  I think it will do very well.

    :D

  • shell29

It’s not a bad song and I think Adam sounds good (as usual).  It just doesn’t grab me in the same way WWFM did.  When I heard that song I immediately thought “that’s a hit”.  I’m not feelin’ it with this song.  That’s just my opinion-I’m not a “basher” or a “detractor” with an agenda (which seems to be the label that’s often hurled at anyone who fails to sing Adam’s praises over each and every thing he does).

Having said that, I’m not making any bold predictions of the future success or failure of this song with respect to sales or radio airplay.   I can think of at least two examples of other Idol singles that were (in so many words) declared “DOA” that eventually went on to sell platinum.  I hope it does well for Adam, I really do.  I agree with whoever said that Adam will kill it when he sings it live.  If the recorded track doesn’t do enough to sell the song to casual listeners, I think seeing him perform this song live (with him putting his own flair on it) could definitely do the trick.

  • Anonymous

Oh wow! I love this song! This has “hit song” written all over it, folks!

  • justshootme

But the first question Rate The Music asks is “are you familiar with this song?” and if you answer no you’re bumped to the next song. So it’s not first impressions they seem to be concerned about.

  • Anonymous

I like this alot more than I ever did WWFM.  It also sounds like it would fit into my CHR station I listen to but doesn’t sound like a bunch of other songs at the same time.  Good Job to Adam, Claude and Luke.  I like it more and more with each listen.

And now we know why the bridge is differant than what was on the demo

ClaudeKelly ClaudeKelly i rewrote it…to suit Adam’s style. RT @GingerPF: We’re really curious – who wrote the bridge on Better Than I Know Myself?? It’s gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

And radio stations use that info to decide which songs to play.

This seems counter to what I’ve read in the numbers threads. I’ve always heard that the push from the record label and the receptiveness of the PD are what make or break a song on radio. It doesn’t hurt to be requested, and there are programs that have one hour blocks of “rated” music, but that it doesn’t impact spins in the long run.

  • Anonymous

That’s true, Rate the Music is really not asking you to rate a 30 second snippet of a song you’ve never heard of.

Probably 90% of the time a song has to grow on me.  And this includes artists I love.  I can even think of a bunch of songs that I initially hated, but radio wore me down and I ended up liking them.

  • Anonymous

Haven’t been to RTM for awhile, but they frequently ask listeners to rate completely new music (often to pick a single). You get a clip and then rate it.

The info from RTM (callout) is used by radio stations. Other factors affect what radio plays but RTM info is def important.

  • http://twitter.com/Chica63 Kelly

I disagree with those who’ve said it shouldnt take several listens to like a song. I RARELY love a song the first time I hear it. Ex: I actually hated Pinks “Raise Your Glass” the first time I heard it. Changed the station. But now I can’t believe I ever felt that way. Love it! Same with Bad Romance, all of Katy P’s songs (except Peacock lol) anything by Rhianna. Even a few of Adam’s songs took a while to get me. WWFM is and always has been my least favorite song on FYE.

I liked but wasnt in love with BTIKM after hearing the demo and snippet. But the more I listen to it now, the deeper I fall in love with it and notice more things about it, like the breath at the beginning (love), the layers of his voice, the way he sings the bridge with such emotion and authenticity. BTW, Claude said he rewrote the bridge to suit Adam.

Anyway. Not everyone is going to like it but if you take a look at Adam’s twitter feed it’s blowing up with a lot of casual fans (and some who werent at all) loving the song.

  • Anonymous

I tend to look on the pessimistic side of things, so after reading the comments on this blog during the day I was thinking that the doubters were probably right, then I went home and listened to the livestream and I gotta say, that chorus has one strong hook. The song may not be as distinctive as WWFM but it has a stronger hook, and that may be enough to carry it through on radio.

  • Anonymous

Yet, I remember it taking me several listens of WWFM before i really liked it. Many fans said the same thing, and look at how well it did.  IIHY was the same way for me.  As for second hand songs, Fever languished for years before Adam recorded it, and many of his fans consider it one of the best on FYE. Things are rarely so clear cut.

  • CindyM

I rarely take seriously ANYTHING written by someone who has made their bias or agenda perfectly clear.

    Amen, lol.

I also agree about having to hear a song more than once.  Almost every Katy Perry song affected me that way, Gaga’s You and I was the latest song that it took me multiple listens to like and then I loved it.  This song grabbed me from the start, something WWFM didn’t do so I’m happy.  :)

Can’t wait to hear it on my radio!!!  My local pop station has already mentioned that he has a new song coming out, so I hope that’s a good sign that he’s still on their radar! They still play WWFM alot and recently started playing IIHY every once in a while.  Maybe they’re anxious for new stuff too!

  • milwlovesadam

The song is posted on Vevo. I listened a few times, love it. Much better sound quality. I do think this is a hit. I also don’t adore most songs on first listen. The only songs on FYE that grabbed me on first listen were Fever and Pick You Up. But, I grew to love most of the CD.

My local I Heart Radio morning DJ loooves her some Lambert. I can’t wait to hear this turned up to 11 on my morning commute. Is it the 20th yet?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I may be in the minority, but I can usually tell from a couple of listens if I’m going to like a song or not.  I may like a song a bit more on hearing it many times, but usually I’ll never get to the point that I love it (eg. Mr. Know It All).  I liked BTIKM on first listen.  :)

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

After reading all the comments I felt like I just came out of a twilight zone. This discussion reminds me of 2009 when WWFM was released. The same arguments about WWFM not having a hook and the song going nowhere and it will never be a hit. I am soooo going to save this thread for when this song becomes a hit.  This is one of my favorite Adam song. My local pop radio station is going to spin the crap out of this song. Now to go and check out Adam’s feed.

Ok, I have heard the song again at AO, and I can report that the drum is, actually, annoying.  Would like to hear again, without that …

  • Anonymous

Maybe you are thinking about FYE.  Many people thought that that song didn’t have a hook, including the PDs who didn’t play it.  I never heard that WWFM didn’t have a hook, but then people perceive songs differently.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

ita. Adam’s twitter feed is fascinating right now. It’s full of fans, but plenty of nonfans are tweeting in favor of the song. I’d say the consensus is positive.

  • CindyM

Maybe you are thinking about FYE.  Many people thought that that song didn’t have a hook, including the PDs who didn’t play it.

Did PDs say that?? I don’t remember hearing their reasoning.  There were lots of people who posted they didn’t like WWFM, said it was not going to do anything on POP, too slow, lucky to get top 30, no hook, etc.  I’m sure you can find it in the archives.

It sounds exactly like Adam.  Beautiful Vocals up front and center right from the start!  This song is amazing and Adam sounds amazingly sexy in it!  Pure ear candy1

Love this song! It’s caught my attention and that of my musician hubby.  His only complaint is that he will never be able to cover this song because of the range Adam showcases in this song.

I’d say that Daughtry is the exception.  There may be others, but Chris started to get offers to write for different artists even before his first album was released.  He’s also had his songs used by other forms of media, like television shows and the recent Batman video game.

After the success of “Down” Jarred Cotter also received a lot of offers.  Besides writing Jay Sean’s Do You Remember, he also co-wrote “Where them Girls At”, which is on David Guetta’s current album.  That song peaked at number 3 in the UK, but I don’t think it has been released in the US yet.

    Play…smile…bop head…feel happy…repeat… play…smile…bop head…feel happy…repeat… repeat… repeat… repeat…

Yep, I love it. And it has now stuck itself into a happy place in my head.

Adam’s vocals are amazing, and I love the juxtaposition of his powerful, emotional vocal line with the heartbeat drum in the background.

Yes, I suppose that this is a somewhat “safe” choice. But it’s a great choice because it builds on Adam’s previous radio success and takes it a step further. Future singles will then take further risks.

And we’re all going to need to fasten our seatbelts for when Adam sings this live, because it is going to be in.cred.i.ble. He is going to absolutely slay this song live.

  • Anonymous

I saw where some PDs and DJs said this, but obviously not every PD and DJ will feel the same way.  I’m sure that there are many reasons why some PDs didn’t want to the song, while, obviously, some PDs had no issue with playing it.  For example, one of my local DJs loved it, even though his station never played it, and thought that it was a good dance song, while one on another station felt that it was silly, but not in a good way.

I’m sure you can find it in the archives.

I’m not going looking for that info, but I’m sure that this was said.  The same thing was said about LLWD, as well as the idiotic claim that it wouldn’t do well because it was a cover.  As I said, not everyone will like a song, and not everyone will hate it.  That’s always been the case with music.  My original post was about whether or not people said that WWFM didn’t have a hook.  My recollection is that this was a complaint about FYE, but not WWFM.

cwm- me too, can’t wait for the live versions. This could be another reason they chose this as the lead single. Also, it will be a piece of cake for Adam to sing this acoustic at radio stations. And I believe this go round Adam will be doing much more radio promo in the US than with FYE. That said, this version just kicks ass, IMO. Really looking forward t seeing how far this song will go.

I finally heard the full song and I love it.  The vocals are amazing, espeically how they layering of Adam’s voice.  I love the drum beat and the hook and I can’t stay still while listening to it and I am absolutely singing along.  To me, this is a hit.  Adam doing this song live will be a treat.  He can change it up in so many ways.  This has me wanting to hear the rest of the album.  Adam knows exactly what he is doing and I love every minute of it.

I really like that piano cover of BTIKM. Beautiful!

I’m one of the fans that really didn’t like the CK demo. Having said that, the chors, even as CK sang it, would always stick in my head. I thought there would be a huge reworking of this song, but there wasn’t. Who knew all it took was a voice like Lamberts to make a meh so so beautiful ;) So excited looking at his twitter feed with alot of guys suddenly liking him. I think there are two reasons for this. First of all that cover art, lol. It’s so simple yet so striking ( and not controversial). And the song I think resonates more towards a male perspective. It’s not a gushy love song. It’s a “hey, I might now show it all the time or say it all the time but the fact that I am still here with you should show you I love you” type thing. So male lol.

My other thought is this is one of those types of songs that you pick up something new every time you here it- the heartbeat drums, the piano, the voice overlays- all thing I didn’t hear until I got it on my ipod or car speakers. Songs like this do take frequent replays. Reminds me of Kelly’s MKIA. I was meh about it until I heard it in the car for the first time. This might be a slow grower, but I am going to go out on a limb and say it’ll be bigger than WWFM. Especially if he has an early performance of it. Remember WWFM didn’t get big till he sang it on Idol, and that was at the end of most of the radio run. Wow that was longwinded, lol.

  • TurkeyIdol

Really all you can ever ask for is potential, and I think it is hard to deny the potential here.  From all signs, RCA is fully behind it, and will give it a proper push.  Seems they are giving it some time to grow and run on all 3 formats, since the album drops 3 months after this single.  Should be fun to watch how it all plays out! :)

  • http://twitter.com/didilynnPF Deanna

Pretty song, gorgeous vocal! I think this is the most pop friendly (and current) song I’ve heard Adam sing.  I’m a fan of Bruno Mars and Jason Derulo and I hear a bit of both of them in this but with Adam’s voice, which to me is like crack.  I like pop music, classic rock not so much.  Although strangely I loved Adam singing The Show Must Go On, still listening to that one.

I believe this is Adam’s dream (to sing current pop music) – I’m so happy for him that he gets to do it.  I am really looking forward to more dancey, sexy music from him and I’m sure there will be that on the album. But BTIKM is a great song.  I do hope it’s a radio hit, really hard to predict these things.  Fingers crossed it does well, so we get more Adam on the radio!

Your expensive headset must be playing to clogged ear canals. The song is OK but totally over processed just like most of todays beat driven drivel.

I think with the enormous success of Adele, there’s already more of a focus on good voices right now.  I mean people like Beyonce and Pink and other amazing singers have always been popular, but Adele having success with just a piano and her singing might have started that trend already.  Hopefully Adam can continue it. :)

  • Anonymous

Not that just a piano is a requirement–Rolling in the Deep and Set Fire to the Rain have many more instruments and much more production, but I’m talking about the whole vocals-focused thing in general. :)

  • Anonymous

I’d be good with a moderate hit for the first single back.  And I think it’s good that someone who really isn’t into Adam (that’s obvs not a bad thing, just that he’s not your type of music/singer) finds the song catchy.  I feel like the song could really grab people on pop and hac. :)

  • Anonymous

I aggregate myself with the people that said they like BTIKM way more than WWFM.

In fact,  I’m mostly happy that Adam has this song as his first single because I think it is POP, and I want him to do pop, good, current, even if non revolutionary as some want to put it, pop, because that will keep him relevant.

Can’t wait to see how this goes.  I am not going to put on predictions like some other people want to put (both positive and negative) but I want to say that I’m happy that I personally love the song and that I think the potential is there.

  • judes

I am in the not so much a fan of Adam but will buy a song of his if I like it & I did with WWFM. For me to buy this song they would have to get rid of the annoying drum beat which would continually give me a headache. To me it detracts from Adams vocals which I do like on this song. If they could bring out a version with more instruments & with a better balance of sound I might think about buying it but for me WWFM beats this hands down the way it is at the moment.

  • Karen C

I also think that Adeles success shows that there are some people that prefer the focus on voice.  That maybe part of the reason that some people hadn’t been buying albums in general is that they didn’t like most of the pop music out there that didn’t focus on vocals.

I agree a focus on vocals in pop music could be very good for Adam.

  • jaylee

I woke up singing “better than I know myseeeelf”
Total earworm ha ha. I love the song so much.

Besides the supercatchy chorus, the other thing this song has going for it is the lyrics.  The seemingly cold, difficult guy who really loves the girl after all is a major object of female fantasy–see Pride and Prejudice and a million romance novels. We’ve all been in a relationship with an undemonstrative, even bad-tempered guy and we like to think he truly loves us (if he probably doesn’t in reality!). So I can see girls and women really digging the idea of one of these guys singing these lyrics to them.

Interesting that studio57 thinks guys will like these lyrics too!

I may be one of the few fans who would like Adam to record a CD of Broadway tunes some day, if only to “show off” his wonderful voice on some songs that will allow him to do that.  :)  I’ve thought that ever since I heard him sing “Come to Me, Bend to Me”.

I think the song is very relatable. (hmm, spell check doesn’t like that word) I think it will be a success because of that. (not to mention how good his voice is) Only time will tell, of course, but I really like the song and I am sure, as it hits radio, many more will enjoy it as much! And I am saying this based on the song itself, not just as a fan :) So, now that I finally have a day off, I am going to finally decorate my house and put up my tree for Christmas while I enjoy this awesome song while I do so! :)

I like it too , for me as long as his vocals are upfront I can get with any beat. Even our large local Station who never played Adam last time around, announced on Fri they would have new music from Adam Lambert next week. Very hopeful

Yeah, woke up with this song still in my head. If this song gets played it will be very successful. Adam’s voice just gets under my skin, it’s so powerful, vulnerable, just so HIM! The synths and the drums totally help make this song special. I love what Dr Luke did, and CK lyrics just cut to the quick. I loved this song from the minute I heard the snippet and I knew the full was going to be great, but this just totally exceeded my expectations, so happy for Adam!

    And like cwm said…Play…smile…bop head…feel happy…repeat… play…smile…bop head…feel happy…repeat… repeat… repeat… repeat…
    Smile..smile…happy…happy.

A friend looked at me and said, “Gurl…Did you get lucky last night?!?”

Another passenger said, “I wanna have what you had this morning!!!”

Wow – I can’t believe how this song is growing on me with each listen. I liked it immediately but now I LOVE it. The layering is incredible & all Adam. As someone (I think it was Fuzzy) said – you hear something new & exciting with each listen. The song wears well! :-)

It has potential. Top 40 Radio should give it a shot.

    Hello Everyone,

Babie here from London UK! I have been lurking for years. But only one person brought here-ADAM.

Let me just say on first listen to #BTIKMS I was truely entranced by his VOICE. Now the beats I gather is dupstep and some synths and oh the sexy piano-very appealing and different.

I asked my niece and nephew to listen to it as they are pop juggernuts. Immediately they told me its a hit. Very vulnerable, very clear and you can feel every word he is singing. Well if Adam wanted to appeal to XYZ-Generaton in my view he is getting noticed. They love it. This bodes well for #Trespassing.Bring it on.

I believe that he has a hit on his hands. There is going to be two classes of Adam fans; those who do not love it and want him to do rock or something else album. The difference here is Adam has range to die for.Lets just imagine what this would be like live on xfactor or AI.Breathtaking!

I also think that RCA might simultaneously release another single before the album drops. Lets wait and see!

There is talk of further colaboration with Queen. If Adam performs with Queen for the Olympics rock fans are in for a treat.Hopefully he can perform a single from #trespassing as well.

One more thing, Kirsten I always look forward to your posts. You are hilarious! Thanks MJ for a great blog.

    Regards

Agree – wouldn’t that be great.

  • LaurelG

I agree with you, studio57, the striking cover art is a big plus for this song.  It looks great on 99.5′s site, and other places I have seen it (Aceshowbiz):

    http://www.hot995.com/pages/toby.html

Lee Cherry should always photograph Adam.

And, graceinspace, I want Adam in the pop lane too.  In part because it’s what he wants and in part because it’s what I listen to.  Success now will give him the leverage to try different sounds later on.  Predictionwise I think this could be bigger than WWFM, if only because it’s more suited to Pop playlists.  I always liked WWFM, even from the first snippet, but I like BTIKM more.

  • Tera2

This whole version of the song is easier to tell how he did than previous snippet.  Its a good melodic song and he’s obviously going for the a mainstream pop/soul crowd.  I like that style of music and I already liked the song when demo version by Claude Kelly was posted here some weeks ago.  I thought Claude sang it great.  I noticed some Adam fans didn’t like the song then.  Its not that different from original.  Adam just changed portion of it and it fits ok.

Also, it doesnt really shock me he sang this song, cause what made him a favorite of mine along with Kris that season was his broadway vibe, not rock.  Looks like with this CD and collaborators he’s going for the pop and club crowd, so he can get radio play and reach mainstream crowd, while keeping some of his old fans from the lady Gaga crowd.

  • Anonymous

Yesterday I said BTIKM was just good, but today I have a completely different opinion of it. I actually caught myself humming it. What I say now is “I love this song”!!!!

  • Anonymous

So my first listen yesterday and I was like “this is better than WWFM” and I wasn’t a big fan of WWFM so haha there is that.  But this is really growing on me fast. WWFM took forever to grow on me and that wasn’t until he started doing acoustic versions during his worldwide promo tour.  I really hope this song is a hit for him.

  • AllenTX

This reminds me of Need You Now. First time I heard NYN, I was like “well, that’s it?” I didn’t get the hype. It’s nothing terribly original, nothing trend setting. But it stayed in my head somehow, at odd time, it was bugging me “what is that verse again?” I found myself seek out the song just to hear it. I had the similar reaction to this song, albeit to a lesser degree. If I give NYN 100, then this probably gets 85. I took some major points off because of that chorus, too dated power ballad sounding, and some minor issue with the production which is not terribly complementary to the song.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

Wow, it’s been a day, and I’m seriously loving this song. I still have the damned thing on repeat. I most sincerely did not have this particular reaction to ANY of Adam’s previous singles. The ones I played over and over again remained on the album, and were not radio releases.

That leads me to believe it’ll be perfect for pop and hac. It will fit on my local pop station’s playlist, and it stands up to repeated listens, and pop repeats songs, to put it mildly.

I’m so hopeful about this thing. RCA simply needs to push it :D

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig ShreddingHalien

Claude Kelly is working with Chris Rene. Chris did multiple request for people to follow him last night and stated he was in the studio with him.
Could Chris be the next Adam? Inquiring minds want to know. (J/k Adam )

it’s a pretty song although middle of the road and it should do reasonably well on top40.  For me it’s pale in comparison to WWFM which is in my opinion a very very good song and it was why it had such a good run in sales and radio play.
I’m not expecting a hit song at every release and i think this one is decent. congrats Adam

  • Anonymous

Liked WWFM – especially the Berlin and Sunrise acoustics – but never completely over-the-top about it.  Lyrics – “wwfm” – IMO, have a slightly whiny vibe to them.   This song, BTIKM, much more dynamic and masculine.  For me, a winner in every way.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

Well I’m getting a great education reading all of these very articulate comments from everyone.  It’s very apparent to me that I am completely ‘out of the loop’ with the intent of the lead single.  I’m a huge Adam fan but I have to say this isn’t what I expected from him as the first song off the album to generate buzz and airplay.  But, apparently, I’m wrong from what I’m reading here.

I am not a big fan of Adam Levine personally, but I am trying to separate the person from the music. Being completely honest, “Moves Like Jagger” grabbed me from the very first time I heard it and it stuck in my head for days.  For me, it’s got the right amount of pop swagger, great rhythm, insane hook and nice vocals.  This is the kind of song I was hoping Adam Lambert would lead with.

So, to help me understand a little better about the ‘makeup’ of the first single, why isn’t it ‘not’ necessarily the best song on an album?  In my thinking what ‘they’ lead with is the very best of the best if it’s the forerunner to the rest of the album.

Your expertise is very appreciated and welcome … thanks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

First of all, I love btikm. It’s the first Adam radio single I love.

As to “why,” they’d release a safe song for first single: Adam’s been gone from the radio for well over a year. He has one fairly big hit (wwfm) and a small hit (iihy) as his radio resume. That’s not much. He is openly gay, and US radio is conservative.

He is in no position to open with the best, and, possibly, the riskiest song on his album. He needs to open with the safest and the most radio friendly song, and that song might not necessarily be the best on Trespassing.

A lot is riding on the radio performance of this single, as the sales of his album will depend on how well the single does. Radio play will determine how well the song does. I think going with the “safest,” most radio friendly song they can is a very wise decision.

My favorite song from fye was Down the Rabbit Hole. If they’d replaced fye with that song, Adam’s album would have sold half what it ended up selling, as dtrh is a psychedelic, funky beast, not right for top 40 at all.

I can’t listen to BTIKM again til tomorrow because I have people coming for Christmas Party and I’m already in withdrawal. Seriously the more I listen the more I love!

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

I know one who writes incredible songs, sings them with great interpretation, produces and has had a string of hits and albums for decades … and I’m a great fan of his, too:  Neil Diamond.

  • Anonymous

Interesting about MLJ – a big fan of M5 and Levine, but this song, for me, was like fingernails on a chalkboard.   Big hit, of course – but couldn’t pay me to listen to it again.  What makes the world go ’round, I guess.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

Question for you or anyone who may know:

What is the reason why the artist has to sing their new song live/acoustic for the radio stations as part of the promo?  If the station has the recorded/radio ready version, what is the need to perform the song ‘in person?’  Not understanding this, so hoping for some enlightenment, please. ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

I’m guessing that it’s a rite of passage and personal endorsement of the song on that particular station. Adam’s lucky that he can, actually, SING his singles. Many others can not.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

What is the reason why the artist has to sing their new song live/acoustic for the radio stations as part of the promo?  If the station has the recorded/radio ready version, what is the need to perform the song ‘in person?’

It’s part of the economy of flattering radio stations into playing the recorded music. The acoustic performance is often in the context of a private performance for the radio station’s fans — stations love “win tickets to this exclusive private performance!” as promo — and/or provides exclusive video to be posted to the station’s web site. Anyway, it’s that the station somehow gets exclusive content to share with its fans.

Doing these performances doesn’t guarantee that the station will play a given song — the station may also have some sort of “must hit top 20″ or whatever benchmark — but it’s all part of greasing the wheels.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

Thanks so much for your very insightful remarks.  I’m understanding how this all works much better now since I’m not a radio listener at all anymore.

I also love DTRH and Voodoo, so I see what you’re saying about these songs not ‘making it’ on radio.  But I’m a little puzzled as to your comment that US radio is conservative.  How is that possible when so many of today’s hits and lyrics are very suggestive and sexual?

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

And that just goes to prove in spades how very subjective and personal musical tastes are.  What one song will ‘move’ one person will be a ‘deadbeat’ to someone else.  Funny that I would even like MLJ since I have absolutely no respect or regard for the artist in this case.  But that’s a whole ‘nother issue not in sync with this thread.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

In practically all cases, Adam sings his songs better live and off the cuff than what we hear on record.  At least for me, that’s true.  I adore his voice on record, by when he gets in front of an audience and improvises, he takes me to the moon and back!

  • Anonymous

Yes, fascinating the difference in acceptance between/among individuals with regard to music.  Not always predictable either.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

Those hits and lyrics are “straight” sexual, not “gay” sexual. Straight is acceptable. Gay is not. Radio IS conservative. I don’t know if you are aware, but Cumulus, which is the second largest owner of radio stations in the US, literally replaced Script’s Breakaway line, “praying to a god I don’t believe in,” on their stations.

I love this song and am so excited for the new album.  It’s definately my favorite single so far and I liked it since the 1st listen.   From the list of collaborators and the 1st single, it sounds like the album is going to be more current and much more pure pop than the 1st one which makes me happy.  I can not wait to hear the collabs with Bruno and Pharrell!

So as I said earlier, not an Adam fan. Only song I really loved off his first album was Fever. Sum total.  On the other hand, I’ve admired his grounded personality and his pretty astounding vocal range.  I liked this one when I heard it, but I find myself listening to it like again and again. It’s a definite earworm.

The thing is – and this just hits me – Adam might have some of the magical quality that Kelly has and IMO maybe what’s necessary in the rough seas of the musical industry at this point.  He can take mediocre material and sell the hell out of it. Because this is not a great song, but he makes it sound like Hallelujah [has he covered that?].  Anyone can sing a great song and succeed. But singing a lousy-ish song?  That’s golden.

  • Anonymous

Not really a fan of the verses but the chorus is not bad. But what’s with the old-school video game beginning and ending? I also really hate the drums, they make it sound like a lot of the other pop songs out there. I’m a real sucker for that piano, though.

Trying to be an Adam fan can be frustrating for me. He’s really interesting to follow, and his live performances are amazing and epic, so I really want to like him. Then I listen to his album and a lot of it makes me think he could be doing better material and not this generic pop stuff. I wasn’t into him on Idol, especially after he stated he wanted to go in the Lady GaGa/Katy Perry direction. But since I’ve followed him (which really has been since he got on Idol), I prefer him doing the older “rock god Adam”  stuff than the current stuff he is doing.

Blah I’m at war with myself lol.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know how I feel about this song. I know I don’t like it as much as WWFM, nor do I think it’s as earwormy as that song. But I do think it’s better than IIHY, which not a fan of, but which went on to do okay, not great, but certainly better than I expected.

It reminds me of Kelly’s first single in that I don’t love either one, and I could see it having the same kind of mid-tier success that MKIA is having. So I don’t think this will blow-up for Adam, like MKIA didn’t for Kelly. Which saddened me for Kelly. I’m hoping though that Stronger works out well, and a stronger (sorry, couldn’t resist) single for Kelly. And I hope that if this song for Adam doesn’t work out in a big way, that it still has some success, and that allows for a next single that can do more for him. And more importantly me, because I’m not a huge fan of this song, I would love to love his next song.

I’m guess I’m conflicted, other than my desire for this song to do well for him overall, as I am a fan. In that I’m pretty clear about.

No I have no clue …. but it really bothers me that these radio stations who play such sexual content in their music doesn’t ‘get it’ globally …

  • Dakota01

That’s a very nice review of BTIKM.  I especially like this part:

“And as much as this is the masterwork of Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly, Glambert deserves just as much of the credit as the hitmakers behind him. It’s his emotional delivery that truly brings “Better Than I Know Myself” to life, topped off with that now trademark rock star falsetto that’s made the 29-year-old one of the finest male vocalists in the industry today.”

  • Anonymous

The more I listen, the finer this performance of Adam’s becomes – unusual, since with most performers it’s usually the opposite.  The lyrics go directly to the heart – the voice (along with the smashing backing track of his harmonization) – the emotion – all combine in a track that deserves to go up the charts.  Not another pop singer who could put this across like Adam does here.

  • http://twitter.com/OneTwoDoseyDoe Roger Kramjet

I really LOVE this song. I played it yesterday and woke up this morning singing Better than I know mysellllfffff! It made me smile.

I looked at a couple of the reviews on-line and everybody has loved it so far.

I was happy to see that out of the four reviews I read two have already mentioned Grammy nominations. Woo Hoo! Great start for his new album.

I also read some tid bit about queen booking an Italian arena in July and the rumor was that Adam would join them for a massive concert. Anybody have any information on this tid bit because I will book tickets now!

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

This song reminds me of chocolate. I love it. I have no idea why. It is not rational . But resistance is futile!

  • Dakota01

    Another nice review:

    http://www.allureofsound.com/?p=24410

”“Better Than I Know Myself” is an interesting choice as a single because it lacks all the gimmicks and cliché’s that can be found on most modern pop songs, but still sounds current enough to have mass appeal. The track is beautifully arranged, and with Adam’s strong vocal delivery, it should have a strong presence on pop radio.”

Really loving all these positive reviews!

  • sagi

I believe the rumor! I happened across an article that someone uploaded from the UK Sunday Times (12/18/11 must be Sunday over there now) I can’t link because I don’t have permission and I’m sure there are legal issues in linking it, but a quote from Adam “Brian and Roger understand that I have my music and my own career to progress, and they are supportive of that,” Lambert says diplomatically.“But we will definitely perform together again.”
There was much more info regarding Queen and Adam. I am hoping the article shows up because there were a lot of good things I picked up from the interview, including album stuff. You need to subscribe (paid) on the site to view it, I guess.

Same here. Yesterday, I thought it was a bit generic, and I don’t like fade away ending, blah blah. But today, the chorus is playing in my head in endless-loop. I try stopping it and it is not working. I didn’t realize this was so infectious at first listen. I am getting dangerously optimistic. Time to bite my nails again.

Sorry I am a latecomer to the party… After listening to the song on AO, the song is ok for me, being more a rock and showtunes fan…

Am happy to hear that Adam’s voice is really front and centre in the verse/strophe. Not a big fan of the chorus…too generic… Adore the bridge though… Can’t wait to see Adam perform it live. Really hope that the song will succeed in introducing Adam to a new segment of the popmarket.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

Thank you Eilonwy … I’m getting how this all works little by little.  What you say makes sense re: schmoozing the radio stations …. yep, a little flattery and ‘up close and personal’ touch goes a long way, especially when you have Adam Lambert’s chops.  He certainly doesn’t have to convince anyone that he can ‘saaang’, so what’s left is giving the station what it asks for in terms of face time and other perks for the fans.

Win/win for both the station and Adam, I’d say!  Thanks again!

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

Completely agree with you on this.  The more I listen, the more I hear things I hadn’t heard before.  Now I can concentrate on the individual components rather than having to take the entire song in as we do initially.  Now I really hone in on the various instruments … the organ, piano; of course the drums are prevalent but now I love their percussion pounding to the heart.  I now hear Adam’s incredible layering of his flawless vocals, his harmony, all of it.

Loving this more and more …. and that’s the mark is a really good song for me … that on continuous listening, I’m not getting bored but rather allowing myself to actually ‘sink’ into the layers and depth of all of it.

A question to you all. Does the beginging of BTIKMS and first line ‘cold as ice’ with drums sound somewhat christmasy? Maybe am overloaded. How many times have I listened to it again! LOL:-). But it is beginning to sound rather celebratory to me & no am not drunk-but drunk on Adam!

Wow. If this weren’t Adam Lambert, the Glambert’s would be hating it for the mediocrity it is. It’s indistinguishable from half the crap on pop radio at any given moment – even Lambert’s vocal here is generic and sub-par.

  • http://twitter.com/OneTwoDoseyDoe Roger Kramjet

Adam’s voice makes it distinguishable and I listened to it holding my husband’s hand and we looked at each other and both smiled. After 20+ years together we got the lyrics of the song and felt it. I have not been able to get it out of my head. I absolutely love the song.

I’m not an Adam fan, think his voice is too thin and poppy for Queen, but I like everything about this catchy popsong.

  • Anonymous

Well, he sounds good to me.  But I would guess that the point is to make a radio friendly single, so in effect, he’s done it.  Mind you, I’m about a hundred miles from Glambert. I don’t own anything he’s recorded. But IMO the only reason to like this is not because you’re a stan. I think there’s a lot of emotion behind the lyrics.

  • starhart

Wow, Adam is #1 on the Movers & Shakers list on Amazon;and #14 on the Best Seller’s list.
    Go Adam!
I have been lurking for months again, but had to post now…I really love this song, despite being underwhelmed with the demo and snippet. I totally hear Adam’s voice as very distinct; and for me, that is what sets this song up to succeed. For me, at least, to comment on any song he sings without taking into account his voice, is useless.  It IS his voice that makes this work, imo.

  • Tess

The important thing is that Roger and Brian think his voice holds up well for their songs….they are the ones putting their rep on the line.

  • Anonymous

Did you see/hear Adam’s performance with Queen at the EMTV Awards? Just wondering because “thin & poppy” is not an apt description. IMO of course. :)
    Glad you like BTIKM!

  • iani

From the group of singers who sang as vocalists for Queen I’ve only liked Adam as combination of voice and stage presence. And no, I don’t want to hear a FM voice-imitation live on stage or my TV, I’ve said once, it would be creepy for me, just bring the Q music and the best of singer who voices it.

I think if you look through the thread (good luck with that, lol) you will see alot of fans thought it was Adam’s voice that made the song. A great voice can do that, if you are a fan of that voice.  Adam’s interpretation of the song for me anyway, takes it to a diffferent level too. Claude’s version sounds like he is trying too hard to sound like MJ, and that bugged the shit out of me so much I couldn’t even enjoy the words to the song.  I think his vocals are outstanding in this song. I didn’t notice how well until I listened with a good set of speakers- it wasn’t until then that I even heard the vocal layering. Anyway, I respectfully disagree that his vocals are “sub par”.

Not only Adam’s fans think the voice makes the song, but it seems like every review I have read says the voice makes the song. I can’t think of anothr male pop star who could do this kind of vocal. None! As a matter of fact, I would guess that the reason the song hadn’t been recorded before this is because there wasn’t a voice for it. And, I would also not be surprised to find out that this song might have been pitched to Christina back in 2009 but we know what route she went with her album!

I don’t know buffynut- I think it’s been waiting for a male singer. I said this earlier upthread but the P.O.V. in the lyrics sounds like it comes from a male perspective.

Love Adam voice in this song! His voice is unique =)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

Studio, you are probably right about that. It does sound like a male perspective! But what male singer could sing that besides Adam?!

Another review of Better Than I Know Myself
It´s a wonderful review, he is the official Grammy blogger, he loves the song!

None, IMHO- That’s probably why it’s been on a shelf all this time :)

  • starhart

I actually can really hear Kelly C singing this–the phrasing and big notes totally remind me of her best singles.  Not a bad companion if others respond to that as they have to her!

  • Anonymous

I’m sure Kelly would do a good job, but I think a male voice would take it to another level. I think this song is perfect for Adam, it showcases his big voice and most of all, his emotions to shine through. He feels this song and emotionally connects with the words. I can’t stop humming the words and it keeps replaying in my head. It’s an intoxicating, addictive little ditty.

  • starhart

Oh yeah, Adam owns this, and I don’t in any think anyone else should have recorded it…just making the observation that it reminds me of how she uses her big voice to make hits–just like Adam!

I just smiled reading Adam’s twitter because it just hit me!

Ugh! Boring shriekfest. Horribly written song. What was he thinking?

  • Anonymous

What!!!! Shriekfest!!! Sorry, but I have no idea what you were listening to!

  • Moria Polonius

He was thinking: I need something that could have a chance on top40 radio.

  • Axxxel

I can relate to this song and I am not male so I don’t really think that it is sung from a male perspective.

  • Axxxel

well, if it is indistinguishable from the other popsongs on pop radio, then I suppose the radio’s will be most happy to play it… and that is what it is all about… More playtime, more new fans, more opportunities for live performances, more youtube video’s (kidding about the latter…).

I explained what I meant more in my first post a while back. I am sure it resonates with alot of people but I have noticed alot of males seem to like it. It is not a gushy love song- more of a ” hey- I know I don’t always say it, or act it but the fact that I am still here should tell you I love you”. Alot of men are like that and I can see this relating to men more, that’s all :)

“We’ve heard the rest of the album, which means we know the unexpectedly downbeat clatter of ‘Better Than I Know Myself’ is NO REASON TO PANIC because there are lots of bits on the rest of the album that are of the ‘big explosive electronic pop epic’ variety. ”

I’m so hooked to this song. And I’m his real stan. :)

  • ronnie

Is this song eligible to be on the itunes 1000 chart?  I mean, with over a million twitter followers, it’s hard to say no one knows this is out.  Surely he will show up today if it is out today, right?

  • Anonymous

It’s not released until Tues the 20th.

  • ronnie

Thanks.  I’ll stop looking for it.

  • Anonymous

Oh don’t worry, you will see it once it’s released!

I am so late to the party.  Been out of town but have heard the song and just want to say how happy and excited I am that I really, really love this song.  I love the organ at the beginning and love the way it ends abruptly and love the heavy beats.   I’m one that did not like many of his songs on FYE and none as well as this one.  I think he has done what needs to be done to be played heavily on radio and sell well.  If that doesn’t happen with this song, then I don’t think it can for Adam on any song. That’s how much I believe in this song.  Looking forward to buying it tomorrow!!

My local radio station just played #BTIKM. Wooooohoooooo!!!! I am so thrilled. This station is still playing #WWFM quite often too. :)))

  • http://twitter.com/leoblueeyes debbie cronin

I just can not imagine why there has been no promo for this song!  This song should and hopefully will be a hit, but with no promo, I don’t know how this will pan out!  I live in Houston & I called 96.5 today to see if they had the track and they said that they do and they have only played it twice!  I called at 6 today and the dj said that he would play it before he left his shift at  7 but he did not and I have been calling ever since and no one picks up!  I just hope RCA knows what they are doing this time.  I thought for sure they would have tried to book him on xfactor to debut the song, but it looks like the no talent Bieber is on with a few more guest, so go figure!  Unless he is played like Rhianna, Katy, GaGa, Adele 7 Bruno, I don’t see how this is going to be any different than before.  I really love Adams music 7 want him to be the huge star that he deserves to be1

  • CindyM

You should only call a station once a day to request. The song doesn’t even go for adds until 1/30. Based on that promo sheet, RCA is going to promo it and seems to be starting. The radio promo tour isn’t scheduled until February, relax a bit.

  • Anonymous

the song just got sent to radio today and doesn’t officially go for adds for several more weeks. And there has already been lots of promo — all kinds of DJs tweeting about the song, along with RCA & Sony talking about it, and several articles written about Adam’s new music, etc.

but it likely won’t be until after the New Year that Adam starts performing it live. Maybe a New Year’s Eve performance at the earliest.

  • Anonymous

I am sooooooo happy to be able to say I love it. I love it. It sounds and ‘feels’ like a hit. Am so glad for Adam.

  • Anonymous

I’m trying to give it a chance, but there’s just so much I don’t like.  The drumline is too in your face; the words are repetitive almost to the point of having maybe a dozen in the whole song.  I honestly get a girl vibe from it too, like it was written for a female voice.  His voice sounds lovely, but will have to eat my words if this pops because I don’t see it.  It has HAV moderate hit written all over it.

  • Anonymous

I haven’t loved all of his artistic choices, but Adam Lambert has a clear, beautiful voice and nice, rich tone. WHY did the producers mechanicalize his voice so that it strips out what is distinctive about his sound?  In this song it sounds kind of like a reedy, light voice… or maybe that was the point? I guess they think everyone must sound like Bruno – or Bieber.

It’s not that it’s unpleasant, just not distinctive. As for the song, I’m sure it will be a hit. It’s sound like a lot of other stuff that’s popular at the moment.

  • Anonymous

The actual downloaded version of the song lacks a lot of the artifacts the livestream possesses. His voice is very clear and not processed. The reediness is from it being a low quality version of the file.

who wastes their time listening to and taking the time to actually sign in on an artist you obviously dislike, uh yeah?  I swear I dont get it, I scan this blog for the artists I like and ignore the one s I do not, my time is so much more important than wasting time on being negative or ugly but anyhow I really enjoy this song and can see it doing really well and giving a gift or gifting for whatever reason is about as far from gross or ugly as you can get.  So happy for Adam fans this is fun to have new music again

Adam looks and sounds great here, as always. Absolutely LOVE NCOE, but I hate Naked Love – it sounds so dated, annoying and vapid to me. Trespassing is a guilty pleasure – cheeseball lyrics, sure, but so much fun and such a great beat. But can someone please tell Adam that he doesn’t need to act out the entire song with his face quite so emphatically. LOL.
