Adam Lambert and Kris Allen continue to trade the Top Spot on the VH1 Top 20 countdown.

This week, Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want From Me” comes in at #1, up from #2 last week. Kris Allen’s “Live Like We’re Dying” drops from #1 to #3. And, Daughtry’s “Life After You” slips from #4 to the #5 spot.

Today’s countdown marks a 5 week run of Idol #1s on the VH1 Top 20:

1/16 – Daughtry, “Life After You”
1/23 – Kris Allen, “Live Like We’re Dying”
1/30 – Adam Lambert, “Whataya Want From Me”
2/6 – Kris Allen – “Live Like We’re Dying”
2/13 – Adam Lambert – “Whataya Want From Me”

Vh1 isn’t the only music televion channel dominated by Idols. A few country-flavored Idols are holding down the top spots on GAC TV.

Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” video takes the #1 spot this week, followed by the debut of her heart-stirring “Temporary Home” vid at #2. Danny Gokey debuts at #3 with “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” and Kellie Pickler rounds out the Top 4 with “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You.”

Danny is also #1 in the CMT Pure top 12 countdown this week.

  • gangreen29

That is great to see so many idols on the top of both countdowns. That bodes real well for Danny that he is able to chart so high on the GAC countdown. Maybe Idol did finally find that male country star (sorry I don’t consider Phil, Bucky, or Josh stars)

  • steph6449

Danny is also #1 in the CMT Pure top 12 countdown this week.
He was #8 last time the first week his video began airing.

  • JKL

Wish Adam would release his stronger songs – Soaked, Fever, IIHY, Strut, Broken Open, Sleepwalker, Music Again etc. soon…

  • tinydance

Congrats for everyone. Danny is really going like gang busters.

This holds true for VH1 (Kris and Adam) and CMT (which Danny just took the #1 spot!) because you can vote as many times as you want. It was pretty easy for Danny fans to get him #1 on that poll.

But, actually, GAC is difficult to get high on because you can only vote once per IP address- they are strict and penalize the artist if anyone is cheating.

So that is fantastic for Danny to get that high (only second to Carrie!).

  • chearts77

I’m really stoked about Danny and how well he is doing on these countdowns.

Pixie Baker: We can’t spam the voting… I know GAC, in particular, tracks IP addresses and if you try to vote again on the same day, it will tell you that you already voted. So, no, our fingers aren’t sore. His placing indicates that there are many people out there voting for him. :)

Yes and no, probably. For the CMT Pure list fans can vote as many times as they wish. The GAC countdown is pretty tough though — just once a day per ip address, enforced by the site design. It does let you choose more than one artists to vote for. Seems to me there could be some of the same peeps who voted for Carrie and Kellie before now, who also like Danny and voted for him once they saw his video come on air. And of course Danny’s own fans who want to see him do well.

Either way, good for Danny to get well-placed in both of these countdown shows which re-air throughout the week in addition to his video being in regular rotation. Can’t hurt him any with his album release date coming up soon now (March 2nd).

  • Pixie Baker

I did say that this applies to all idols…not just Danny.

And I disagree that even if you can vote just once that makes a difference. I have seen a call out on here for everyone to get busy voting each day for Danny….it seems to me it was a very concerted effort. This is why these polls have little meaning to ME….they are fan driven results! JMO

  • steph6449

And I disagree that even if you can vote just once that makes a difference

I was only disagreeing about the sore fingers, lol. With the ability to vote once a day, fingers are feeling ok at least for GAC. Wasn’t even able to vote from my phone or second home computer for that one ;) [ re CMT countdown, no comment however :) ]

These countdowns aren’t scientific polls. Still it’s a good way for fans to support the AI people who are already succeeding or trying to establish their careers, in getting a little more visibility and promotion. Danny is a total newbie with his single just hitting into the country top 40 chart and his CD not even out yet, so sure, his fans are paying attention and happy to help out where they can.

  • Truthiness

But, actually, GAC is difficult to get high on because you can only vote once per IP address- they are strict and penalize the artist if anyone is cheating.

This isn’t terribly hard to get around. It’s the internet, people have been getting around things on it for years now.

And this doesn’t just go for Idol fans, this goes for all, uh invested, fans on the interwebs. Nature of the beast.

…and none of it matters, because I do think that Danny is doing well over all, and I’m very happy for his success and being embraced by the country world.

I’m happy for the rest of the Idols on the VH1 charts, and country charts.

Way to go Idols. Rock, or country as the case may be, on dudes.

  • Bethlyn

His video is getting a lot of exposure, and it appeals to the masses. Really fun and upbeat. I think that is why it is placing so high. We could all use some positivity in today’s world. Each time I watch it, it brings a smile to my face.

The GAC site does enforce it fairly well. Can’t just clear your cache to revote, for ex. I doubt spamming the site has been common especially with Danny’s comparatively less tech-savvy fanbase. Maybe the Carrie and Kellie voters are creative poll-spammers though and Danny got to ride along with them in bloc voting ;)

Happy for Danny either way that he got some nice visibility and additional broadcasts of his video on the countdown shows and their re-air dates. Have noticed several people who may not have been following him closely congratulating him on twitter after seeing it on the GAC show in particular.

This just appeared, very nice for Danny.

lol. :) Congrats to Danny for being #1 on the CMT Pure Country Countdown and #3 on the GAC countdown. I am glad to see that a lot of people voted for him to get him onto these countdowns especially the GAC one.

  • girlygirl

I’m happy to see so many Idols doing well, even if a lot of it is the result of some creative voting. What’s the over/under on Kris being #1 on the VH1 countdown next week, since it’s his turn?

  • RightNow

Hey, kudos to Danny. As the announcer of the GAC countdown said, that is a huge accomplishment for a new artist. Because of it’s strict and monitored voting rules, it is a tough countdown to make.

  • dishwalla

Really cool to see everyone doing well. Season 8 is history. The competition is long over. I want everyone to succeed. But I have to say that Danny coming at #3 on the GAC countdown is a great showing. He debuted at #8 just last week. And Carrie Underwood has the #1 and #2 spots.

  • steph6449

But I have to say that Danny coming at #3 on the GAC countdown is a great showing. He debuted at #8 just last week. And Carrie Underwood has the #1 and #2 spots.

Slight clarification — this is Danny’s first week even appearing on the GAC countdown, and he broke in at #3. Did hear the host refer to that as “impressive” for a total newcomer to the scene to first hit the countdown in a “very high place.”

It was the CMT Pure top 12 countdown where Danny’s video was #8 last week, and now #1 this week.

Believe his video only started airing ~2 weeks ago, so this is all good stuff.

  • Indigobunting

    Truthiness,

You are so right that all fans find ways to get around those polls (I can only imagine how sore Adam and Kris fans fingers are after the constant jockeying for #1 on VH1, where you can legitimately vote as many times as you want!).

But heh, if you have a way to beat that GAC poll, let us Danny fans in on it- no one I know has been able to cheat on it and they are also too afraid to because of the “artist being penalized” admonishment! LOL!

And thank you for the kind words about Danny. It is always so nice to see fans of other contestants say nice things and give congratulations instead of trying to tear others down- takes a mature person to shelve the competitiveness for a little while =)

  • hollygo9

I think this just proves that people who like Idol also enjoy voting for things.

  • LK09

When DA’s Crush was on VH1 at the top forever, people would complain all of the time. Are other artists fans still doing the same complaining about idols being at the top?

  • steph6449

Comments at the GAC site are almost all positive on the results of the countdown, and the countdown article definitely emphasized the AI factor for each of the top 4 this week.
A couple of peeps protesting (one kinda rude Carrie-basher mostly, ugh). But very small minority of those who took time to say anything. Most people seem to admire Carrie, Danny and Kellie for their vocal talent and their efforts to do well coming out of AI.

  • JosieX

I haven’t seen any of Danny’s fans say that they are outfoxing the GAC site to vote multiple times, I think it’s more that he probably has a higher ratio of highly invested fans than most other country artists do, even if more established artists have a larger base overall right now.

Truthiness, I always appreciate your supportive comments to Danny’s fans, that is so nice of you.

Pixie, I think there are a lot of polls that don’t mean much of anything. But I do remember every day to vote in the GAC and CMT polls, because if Danny makes the list his video will be played on the Countdown shows on TV multiple times a week, which helps him. I do think that the GAC one is particularly impressive because it shows that there were a lot of people who care enough about Danny to remember to go back to the site and vote for him everyday. There is a lot of interest in him, e.g. the nearly 18,000 people who turned up the other morning to watch him on the first livestream that the station in Dallas had ever done.

  • Daniel B

Now this has got to be some sort of record, right? 5 weeks in a row with different Idol alumni/songs at the top of the VH1 chart… that’s got to be a first, right? Adding to that, to have the top 4 places on the country CAC all being held by Idols has also got to be a first, right? This is a good week for Idols, even the ones from Season 8.

As for Danny making the #1 slot on CMT…

“This is why these polls have little meaning to ME….they are fan driven results! JMO”

Well, maybe… in fact, you could be exactly right. But remember it wasn’t all that long ago that a lot of people around here were speculating that Danny didn’t really have any fans out there (you know, that his ‘silent big fanbase’ was non-existent). So for him to do so well either it is a legitimate reflection of him making success in his chosen market or he has a large fanbase that is overwhelming the system. It’s either one or the other, and whichever way you look at it, it certainly doesn’t look like Danny should be counted out just yet. Season 8 so far is making even Season 6 look mega-successful by comparison, but Danny could help turn that S8 slump around if he manages to come onto the scene with some momentum.

  • steph6449

But remember it wasn’t all that long ago that a lot of people around here were speculating that Danny didn’t really have any fans out there (you know, that his ’silent big fanbase’ was non-existent).

Not precisely – I remember being told that Danny had “10 or 20″ online fans (total, anywhere). So he did get credit for a fanbase of a sort, lol!

  • Pixie Baker

I am making no judgment on Danny here…..
all I said is that these polls are driven by fans trying to get their favorite to the top (which is not a bad thing and I see the merit by others seeing his name on the top). Of course Danny has fans, he did so well on AI. I am not counting him out….I wish him well….but I put little stock in the voting polls, period! I am a huge Adam fan but when I saw him at #1 I didn’t really get excited. I know why he was there….the war had begun between Kris and Adam fans to get him to the top. I love his video…should it be #1????…probably not in comparison to others.
I know people that love Danny are anxious to see how he will do when his album comes out. I understand that…..it is too early to say how well he will do in sales….look at Alison….I think her album is GREAT but it has not done well. We will see…..and I am done commenting on this …..I get it!
BTW, I was a huge Taylor Hicks fan……he has been dubbed a failure by many here…..but guess what….I still love his music and he seems so happy and he feels successful. That is what counts……Pix

  • Indigobunting

Couldn’t agree with you more Pixie! This is what counts.

Danny is so happy and loving what he is doing. I am so over the competitive crap from S8 and just want him to do well enough to make a living at it and keep on making records for me to enjoy.

kudos to carrie! of course , all this polls are fan-driven. but its nice to see that even though carrie won idol 5 years ago, she is still at the top of her game and , i believe, still collecting new fans along the way.

  • JB1

How funny is it to read about the wonderful success that Danny is having. What a start! These boards last year just bashed the heck out of poor Danny. He would have no career or maybe if he was lucky Christian music would take pity on him. I hate to say it, but he might, just might have a bigger career than anyone from last season. Its not a sprint, its a marathon. This bodes very very well for Danny.

  • Jae

You know, about Danny. Watching the s9 auditions, Andrew Garcia’s voice really reminds me of Gokey’s. Kinda raspy and husky, which reminded me that I really enjoyed Danny early on. That nostalgia makes me regret that he was manuevered into doing country music (which I rarely listen to if it is not sung by a girl). I hope he will come up with a really strong pop country song (waaay more pop than country) that I can support. I can’t get into the stuff that he is doing now even though I think it sounds good ( four what it is). I am happy that he is finding success though. He really does have a good voice.

  • Kate8

I am glad to see Danny having a strong shot at being successful. I always felt that he,Allison and Adam had very strong natural singing talent and uniquenesses to their voices that made them special.

  • Indigobunting

I’m not going to predict that; but I really hope he keeps his label and is able to keep putting out music. You are correct- it is a marathon though (especially country music where charts move at a snails pace), and Danny has proved he can hang in there despite more than one kind of adversity (personal tragedy, no experience whatsoever and extreme personal bias from a few internet sites). He is a very hard worker and I hope coupled with his natural talent and the confidence of his record label that it will pay off.

I hope he will come up with a really strong pop country song (waaay more pop than country) that I can support.

You know, I have never owned a country album (even Carrie can be a little too country for me), but I have been following his radio tour, and I can guarantee that a major criticism of his album will be that it is not “country enough” by traditionalists. I think it will definitely be rock-pop-R&B mixed with country and I love what I have heard (and I don’t think it is just my love of his vocal tone- it really does seem to be good music). Lots of good single potential.

Great review of his single from Reuters/Billboard:

Kate, I think so too, and also that each of them has their own particular strength. I think that in addition to the voice, Danny really excels at emotionally connecting with the song and to the audience. Not that the others don’t, but not to the same degree I don’t think. But of course the others have their strengths. I think you’re right that Danny has a strong shot. None of us know how it is all going to play out, but I think that he and his team are playing a very strong game here.

Well congrats to Danny – good for his fans! I had no idea but I dont watch country that much – I will have to just to check that out. My sis sent me Carries video(Temporary Home) and I LOVED it, knew it would be a hit. I am so happy for Adam, Kris and Daughtry also! Adams video is beautiful and touching and it does deserve to be number 1 again!

Duh and of course! The fans ARE what makes or breaks a singers career
