Adam Lambert – San Francisco – 26 – Hollywood, CA -

Hollywood, CA – Adam’s got the 70à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s heavy-metal androgyny deal going on, with crazy insane vocal ability, and an amazing range.

With plenty of screen time and a growing fan base, I think Adam’s got a shot to make the Top 12. If he does, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be interesting to see how far Adam gets, or if he lets he freak flag fly.

His MySpace is dismantled, but there are still plenty of videos on the net.

You Tube Goodness: Dancing Through Life, As Long as You’re Mine (both from Wicked), Crazy (Adam’s freak flag? It’s flying) and the beautiful,   “I Just Love You”.   Adam was also in a band – Band MySpace.

I don’t like this guy. Like the new judge said, he’s way too theatrical (I can’t believe I’m agree with Miss New Judge)

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

I think he is pretty… I like mens whit that hair and clear eyes… if he can cut the act to the half he migh win a fan in me…He can be like Mika…

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    Liza!!!!

I started out liking him, now I’m on the fence. His first performance will send me to one side or the other.

His voice is extreme, but I’d love to see him tone it down a bit…on the show.

    I’ve seen all the videos.

He’s a beautiful boy, though. I’ll actively hate him when I put on makeup and stuff.

Though his fanbase is huge (snort!) I get the feeling the he’s not quite the chosen one yet. Either way, I’m sure he’s a Top 12 lock.

  • Jolene

IDK what it is, but Adam looks about 37 in that picture. Strange.

  • MrsTrep

I am not a fan of his voice. He may have range, but I don’t like the tone…& the all over the place-ness of his singing. Believe didn’t do much to help him in my eyes…

  • yeahyeahsure

He reminds me of David Cook for some reason.

  • Tess

    New York! New York!…..Cabaret….Sweet Charity!

Liza — so nice to see ya.

And you thought Archie didn’t have street cred! my oh my!

  • Jx223

I really like Adam. I think that he is great and I am definitely interested in seeing what songs he sings on the show.

  • Cec

He reminds me of Tim Curry’s character in Rocky Horror for some reason, and that’s a good thing. He has charisma. His voice is AMAZING, but not everyone’s cup of tea. He seems very intelligent, and he listens. I think he will adapt, and work hard to make this work for the show and for himself. Most importantly, he’s really, really talented, and I can’t wait to watch him.

  • BootStar

I don’t know what it is about this guy, but every time I see him I’m impressed with how he comports himself. Not sure I’m sold on his singing style (never was a big Freddie Mercury fan), but if he goes that route, I think he could be huge. I just really like him and hope he sticks around for a long, long while. He will need to learn to perform for the small screen, however. (And God help me, I flove his hair and fashion choices.)

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Adam looks about 37 in that picture

I think it’s the hair. I wonder if they’ll de-Liza the hair at Top 12.

  • kimberann

LOVE him. One of my favorites this season.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

awww I love Adam. The reasons everyone else hates him – too “theatrical”, too “flamboyant”, etc – are the reasons I flove him… plus the fact that the boy can SANG. I think he won me over finally with his performance on YouTube of OneRepublic’s “Come Home.”

I’ll be curious to see how he does in the competition. If he plays his cards right, he could go really far. I just want him on tour so we can get an awesome glam-rock version of “Crazy.” LOL yeah I know, file that under “never gonna happen” but a girl can dream, right? LOL.

I do have to say that I can’t remember a season with so many polarizing contestants right from the start.

  • t2

Shades of Sam Harris — this boy must make the top 12. His assistance will be needed for the group dances at the very least. Don’t believe me — watch the Crazy video … heh…

On top of which, I am sure that he will make steam come out of Simon’s head at some point during the competition. And I live all season for that one moment…

  • Hazehel

    New York! New York!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..Cabaretà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.Sweet Charity!

One of these is the odd one out.

  • saramcvt

I love Adam for a lot of reasons. I can see why he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but he has an amazing vocal range, and a lot of charisma. I have watched all his online videos, and he can change things up quite a bit. I am excited to see him actually get to sing a whole song. The clip of him for the Zodiac show gives you a taste of him as a rocker. There is a rumor that some AI contestant requested songs by Bowie, Queen and Aerosmith. I hope it is Adam. I would love to hear him sing Dream On…

I am curious if he will stick with his current look, or tone it down for more mass appeal. Personally, I like performers to be true to themselves, and if that means they only appeal to a small niche, so be it. I also hope he makes the top 10, as he would be a big draw for me to get tickets.

  • Dr. Tracey

    He totally creeps me out.

  • justshootme

One of my favorites, but then again I never minded theatricality in my rock gods. I can see how he might bug some people, but I hope he sticks around.

  • jimmyboyd2

Saying he has a shot to make the Top 12 sounds like someone who just started watching the show like two weeks ago.

As one of the chosen few, he is a LOCK for the Top 12.

  • soundscene

I doubt he’ll win, and I don’t think TPTB want him to because they would have to de-theatre him to make him marketable for radio, but I think he’s a lock for top 12 and maybe top 5. There’s no doubt he’s got an impressive vocal range, but I don’t dig his tone (which can border on whiny), nor the dramatic facial expressions that go along with his singing. He’s going to have to work hard to not sound theatrical on every performance. Maybe theatrical rock was great back in the glamrock era of the 70s, but we’re not in the 70s and Adam isn’t rock. He’s Clay, but prettier and more punked out.

  • star

    *clings to Sarah*

Adam is officially my favorite AI diva ever. :wub_tb: There’s something addictive about his voice, and I think he’s the most charismatic of all of this year’s lot. I love his little video interview with Stevie! He likes Katy Perry, ooh. Him singing “I Kissed A Girl” would be all kinds of twisted fun.

I hope the AI stylists cut his hair a little cause it’s starting to turn into an emo mullett.

  • heart2

Hope he makes top 10….I’m loving him!!!

  • tinawina

    Shades of Sam Harris

    This.

He reminds me of Tim Curryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s character in Rocky Horror

    And this.

I could get into him for the entertainment factor, but I can’t see him winning unless he tones it down at least some of the time.

  • primeminister

    He totally creeps me out.

Haha. Adam definitely has a crazy range, but to me, he’s as screamy as Von. Maybe a better kind of screamy, but screamy nonetheless.

  • justshootme

Maybe theatrical rock was great back in the glamrock era of the 70s, but weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not in the 70s and Adam isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t rock.

I don’t know, I think there’s still room for some pretty theatrical stuff in today’s market. The Killers and Panic at the Disco come to mind. And I don’t know if there’s a precise definition of what is and isn’t rock these days. It seems pretty broad to me, bordering on open-ended.

To each his own. I’m still liking him so far. Maybe they’ll do a 70′s glamrock theme week and he’ll kick ass. I’ll be waiting for some Adam Ant.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Adam definitely has a crazy range, but to me, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s as screamy as Von

Totally agree. He just screams…more correctly, or something. :lol_wp:

  • luckeee55

I saw the comment upthread about David Cook. It’s funny, the first time I saw Adam on AI, I thought the same thing. Maybe it was the similar hairstyle (meaning David’s AI redo), but I think it is in the voice also and the theatrical background.

  • Duke

    The winner…of American Idol…2009….is….

  • 2dogs

I’m reserving final judgment until I hear a full, non-cher song out of him, but my initial reaction is not so good. Hate, hate the guyliner and the overly fussy look he is sporting. It’s all just too precious. His singing lacks any pretext subtlety and I thought he sounded a little sharp at the higher end. On the plus side, I really liked his demeanor in “the chair” and he does have an impressive range. He needs to learn that less is more. If he can scale his look and voice back a bit, I will him better, I think.

  • ptslittlecomment

I loved, loved, loved Freddie Mercury – a pure genius in the world of rock n roll. I also like David Bowie and Annie Lennox, so I am not put off by Adam’s persona. I think his voice is compelling both in its range and presentation . I would vote for him. I don’t think he is going to be Middle America’s choice for an “Idol” but I could be pleasantly surprised. I am sure that Adam knows how to play the game if he wants to. I do think there is room for theatricality these days. In addition to the groups listed above, one only has to look at a Coldplay video to find some theatricality interwined with some great music!

PS: I also think its funny how VFTW hasn’t quite decided what to do with him yet. They really like him, so they don’t deem him the worst, but they want people to vote for him to keep him in the mix!

  • soundscene

VFTW hasn’t been about whose the worst in ages. It’s about who they think keeping in the competition would peeve TPTB. If they think TPTB don’t want Adam anymore, they’ll deem him the worst. But until then I think they’ll be going for Tatiana or Von.

  • Laurie

He lost me when he did that Cher song. I didn’t like how he sounded on that at all. Truthfully, I’m not sold on any of them this year. Maybe it is too soon, but by this time last year I already loved Cook and was impressed with Archie.

  • Lys

Totally agree. He just screamsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦more correctly, or something.

Lol. Yeah, that’s how I feel, too. Strange thing is, I was expecting Adam to be one of my faves this season, because it seemed like a lot of people had him on their radar pretty early on, and he’s had all this experience and training. But, nah, not my thing, after all.

I may actually prefer Von to Adam at this point. Both of them are screamers, for sure, but I think the difference is that Von is actually going to try to dial it back from now on, if his responses to Simon’s comments were any indication.

  • JOJOSIE

I love Adam, and I’m a senior citizen who lives in middle America (Iowa). He has the spark and charisma that I like and he can really really sing, I went to Master Class Ladys site and she wants to know if we’re ready for a Cabaret Idol cause she thinks he’s tremedously talented. I’m so hooked that I watch a U=Tube video almost every night of him singing, Is Anybody Listening from the Ten Commandments. Besides singing talent the guy is gorgeous. I think Simon is wondering if he doesn’t win Idol how he’d do in the UK as they are less homophobic there and in Europe. I hope he goes far.

  • bjames

i’m thinking he will be one of those that peaks early on and then fizzles (ie michael johns, lakisha jones, tamyra gray, paris bennet, etc). i could be wrong, but i think there are a lot of people in this group that are gonna surprise us and gain momentum (ie jason castro, elliot yamin, jordin sparks, david cook, kelly clarkson). i’m worried for those who already have the momentum this early on. but what do i know?

  • tralalara

Got skills. Not seeing much soul. Not soul music but himself in the singing, and what I am seeing just doesn’t seem real.
    Hated the Cher song.

  • lg

plus the fact that the boy can SANG

Yes, everyone at my house thought so too. :) I read about his influences from his father, that’s pretty cool. He could well be a lock for the top 12. If I were a betting woman, I’d put my $$ on him. Agree with others that he should tone down his look.

  • movin2thabeet

I don’t hear any screaming from Adam. What I do hear is a very talented singer that can wail when the song calls for it. The boy drips confidence, flamboyance and stage presence. What I do think he needs to work on is dropping that wall of armor that the stage provides. Kind of what David Cook had talked about in his early days of AI. I love Adam’s capacity for flamboyance and theatricality but I also want to see him connect with us at a deeper level through the camera. I do think there’s room in the music scene for more extravagance ala Freddie Mercury or David Bowie. No need to go backwards. Maybe Adam can bring us a fresh evolution of that style. Only time will tell.

I’ve seen comparisons now to both David Cook and to Clay Aiken which I find…interesting. If you mean guys who have confidence, a good voice and some theatre background, ok. And, of course, there’s the strong gay vibe that Clay had going even though many people didn’t pick up on it. But in Adam’s case, it’s not so much about subtlety as it is ambiguity. When it comes to vocals and style, I don’t think Adam is much like either guy.

One theory about Adam’s hair – maybe it gives him more room to play with it when he decides to go all outrageous – like Nadia Turner, or even Sanjaya.

  • baxter

Ok I really liked Adam during his audition, but he lost me this week. Went way to far “theater boi” for me. BUT…..I reserve the right to get back on the Adam train if he can tone it down and just sing a song…not perfom like he’s trying to get a Tony nomination. Also, if he sings a Bowie song and sings it well…..I am all over that Adam Train…hell I’ll be the conductor.

And finally, if no one else really jumps up and grabs me this year, I will vote for Adam cause he’s my internet BFF’s TV boyfriend….Smooches Sarah!!

I compared him to Clay not because of a gay vibe but because I think their voices are a lot alike when Adam isn’t using his super high register. I found it a tad strange at first because he’s kind of punked out but he sings and he’s a total balladeer. That is, so far. Maybe he’s playing it safe because it’s American Idol, and there’s no way he’s busting out a “Crazy”-like performance. Then again, you take the PG-13-rated stuff out of that performance and he still kind of sounds more Clay than Cook.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Star, we definitely need to stick together b/c I think we’ll prolly be the only regular show night chatters who absolutely flove Adam. LOL.

I too would like him to tone it down and show a softer side and really show an emotional connection with his material. But I don’t think that the top 36 is the time to do that. He needs to impress. And yes, I am well aware that so called “screaming” or “yelling” doesn’t impress everyone, but it certainly didn’t turn *that* many ppl away from other AI finalists in the past. Ahem.

It will be interesting to see how versatile he is musically. I like him because he’s interesting as well as a good singer. Sometimes I just want to be entertained. The plus with Adam is that he entertains me AND sounds good. YMMV.

  • KrazeeK120

Adam can SING, no doubt about it, but I am rather annoyed by most of his performances thus far. I mean, Cher’s “Believe”? Seriously???? No man (and probably no woman) should ever sing that song. Ever. A little bit of theatrics is fine with me, but I think he’s too theatrical for theatre!

  • soamused

Adam’s the only one I’m interested in this year. The last two seasons have been pretty bland for me; Adam is entertaining. But then I’ve seen Bowie live four times and I loved loved loved Freddie Mercury. Adam’s voice reminds me of both Mercury and Robert Plant. Tremendous voices, very distinctive, great range. Want to talk about theatrical? Bowie! And talk about a flamboyant personality! There’s a difference between rock/pop theatrical and musical theatre theatrical. Adam I think can do both. I love rock theatrics. I thought Adam toned down both Bohemian Rhapsody and Believe; listen to them closely and there’s nuance and passion in addition to volume and range. Those are really really big songs which require a confident strong voice to deliver well. I thought he did a good job with both. I loved his bits in “Some Kind of Wonderful.” I’m impressed that his youtubes show quite a bit of diversity. I hope the AI voters keep an open mind and he hangs in there long enough to make the tour. I might just brave all those screaming girls to see him. I loved the clip of Fantasia’s “Lady Marmalade” for the Patti Labelle tribute. I want passionate over-the-top performances that wake me up and make me go: wow! That was some serious fun! I’m hoping Adam gives us some of those.

Yes! I completely agree with you, especially the Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant vibe. You said it far better than I could.

  • chewsday

I don’t like his voice or his look – and I loved Freddy Mercury. This guy just seems to be trying so hard to be, I don’t know, SOMETHING. Yes, with all capital letters. There’s nothing genuine about him. The look, the theatricality, the overdone vocals, to me they’re all fake. Where is this guy’s soul? Does he even know?

  • soamused

Thanks, Barbariba! And thanks MJ for the link to Adam’s band’s myspace. Their long list of influences starts with Led Zeppelin, Queen, Bowie, Pink Floyd …. of course! I love it! I want to see Adam do Bowie and some Clash. I’m not sure the AI band, as good as they are, can pull off Zep convincingly, but I’d love to hear Adam try. Can you imagine a Zep theme week? That would be wild.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Oh, Adam. My main issue with him isn’t flamboyance at all. He can let his freak flag fly long and wide as far as I’m concerned. I just think he’s trying tooo hard.

Everyone keeps mentioning David Bowie. I dunno… Bowie simply did things he thought were cool. He wasn’t trying to be something. I get the impression Adam is a little bit of a chameleon. Trying on these personas to see if one will fit. Like someone mentioned, I don’t get any emotional connection.

I haven’t watched any youtube, so all I have to go by is what is portrayed on the show. And he totally lost me with his attempt to switch up a Cher song. He made it into a cheesy ballad!

That said, he certainly has time to redeem himself in my eyes. I’m certainly willing to keep an open mind. I’m just not drinking the kool aid quite yet.

  • Michelle

    He’s too……..scene.

And while I’ll concede he can sing, his tone bugs the hale out of me.

*reserves right to change mind if he gives an awesome performance later, cause he is kind of cute.*

  • jpfan

Seems like a very nice guy but Believe by Cher????? That really worries in terms of song choice. He also makes some very unappealing faces when he sings and stuff like that really hurts on Idol.

Not my thing (he screams not sings) but maybe he’ll surprise me.

  • cookcricket

Hmmmmm, I’m beginning to wonder if the reason Nate and Norman/Nick got through was to make Adam seem more tame and perhaps middle of the road…just a thought.;)

  • JOJOSIE

Go on U-Tube and have a look. My favorites are, previously mentioned, Does Anybody Hear Me, and What’s Up ( 4 non blondes 1993 ) I think he shows a versatility and song connection. Wasn’t fond of the Cher song either but I hope he brings it on the Idol stage, one thing he shouldn’t have is stage fright.

  • soamused

I love Bowie. He went through so many personas, practically a different one with each album for a while. If there were ever an example of someone experimenting with personas to see which one fit…. Thin White Duke? Not much emotional connection there at all, but that was his point – or maybe it was all the drugs that created the disconnect. His early work was really before my time, but I invested in his back catalog and enjoy that more than anything he put out after the mid 80′s. And I think it’s clear Bowie was trying hard to be something very different with each of those early personas. Part of what made him so entertaining was how fully he threw himself into such different roles, he changed his appearance and performing style completely for each. Adam isn’t anything like Bowie that way – I don’t think he’s trying to be a different person with each performance. I think he’s just trying to present very different songs in very different ways, and for me that’s entertaining and refreshing. It’s so much more fun for me than someone taking very different songs and turning them all into the same genre. Really, for me most AI contestants are just so conventional. That’s not entertaining for me; there’s enough conventional out here already. I see Adam as the only possibility of a little bit of unconventional on AI this year. Is it possible to be a modern take on a throwback to glam rock? Yes I know, sounds like a contradiction of terms. Anyway, I don’t see that Adam has much in common with Bowie; Bowie was much much more theatrical. I just threw Bowie in to explain why in comparison I don’t see Adam as very theatrical at all; I know he can be, but I think that he’s been quite restrained on AI so far. I think vocally Adam reminds me of Plant and Mercury, and in terms of approach to performing, he might be a toned down version of Mercury. Mercury once interviewed that one of his favourite performers, one of his inspirations, was Liza Minelli. It really showed in his performances – even Bowie has said that Mercury took rock theatrics to extremes. That’s funny coming from Bowie!

  • jpfan

It’s great that people have looked up stuff they like on U Tube but…he picked a Cher song to sing. That’s just scary.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

I love this guy’s voice. We shall see. LMAO thinking back at how I wore my hair like Bowie as Ziggy Stardust in high school. God, I am old.

  • seattle_girl

I like Adam’s look, but can’t tolerate the singing. Too theatrical for sure, the constant facial mugging is a turn off. I prefer nuance to screaming.

  • Lexus

Adam was my pick to win from his first audition. Thankfully, I don’t see him as The Chosen One – he hasn’t won over the whole judging panel and many viewers are still on the fence. Still, he already has a huge following and I, personally, think he’s a shoe in for the top 3. I love the glam rock. His voice is amazing, but I don’t think we’ve seen him at his best yet. He appears pretty toned down to me in these early stages. He has charisma, maturity and a charm about him. Best of all – a quiet confidence. He’s going to save season 8!

  • soundscene

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great that people have looked up stuff they like on U Tube butà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he picked a Cher song to sing. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just scary.

That’s one choice I don’t get. I get the concept, sort of. It’s easier for an artist to stand out as being “innovative” if they choose a song that is outside their general nature. In other words, rock guys picking pop songs, boys picking girl songs, etc. If they don’t naturally sound like the original singer people are more apt to believe they are being innovative, even if they sound different from the original by default because their style or voice mean there’s no other choice. That was probably what Adam was going for. Pick a disco song sung by a woman. Adam is neither disco nor a woman, so he can’t sound like the original.

He succeeded in not sounding like Cher’s disco version of the song. He even slowed it down (which makes people think he’s being more sensitive and contemplative). Problem was that about 15 seconds into it he reverted back to his theatrical vocals and it turned into something that was cheesier than the disco original. If he’s going to make every song sound like it belongs in the final, dramatic scene of a Broadway musical then at least pick songs that weren’t cheesy in their original form.

I don’t even think he’s glam rock–he just looks glam rock. I don’t hear any resemblance between his vocal style and that of Bowie. Bowie was theatrical in style, but in substance the music wasn’t Broadway.

Just curious because he talked about being compared to Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant.

  • haininh

This boy certainly has charisma. The way he talks/walks/ kissed Paula’s hand, so adorable. He reminds me very much of Cook with that awfully bad haircut in the first half of last season. I don’t like his theatrical style. Not my type.

I’m checking out Anoop’s YouTube videos with the Clef Hangers. Now that’s good music. So in love with his “Angel of Mine” and “Because of You”!

  • stephlem89

    Adammm

  • bean99

I don’t think anyone’s a shoe in for the top 3 at this point. He has a good voice but I’m not impressed by him because I think his performances so far seem to belong in the theater. I think they do want him in the top 12 and he’s lucky not to have to be in group 1 so he probably will be.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Bowie certainly did invent different personas. The key word for me is just that… invent. He was brilliant and did stuff no one else had(as far as I am aware… I, too, had to check out his early stuff after the fact). I don’t see any Bowie in Adam at all, so the comparison baffles me. I don’t see a lot of glam rock. Just Pete Wentz hair, a good voice, and a broadway sound.

Again, he could change my mind. I haven’t seen much of him yet. But if his idea of changing up an old song is doing that version of Cher, I don’t see a heck of a lot of originality in him. Maybe its because I groaned when he said he was going to “change up” a song… it’s like he’s reading the AI play manual from the last two years. Then he did it, but with such lame results.

  • Lu

Not a big Adam fan at all…

  • Natasha

He’s the only one that really stands out to me. I can’t keep the others straight at all. He does have a tendency to shriek on the high notes and he doesn’t have to. He’s got the range.

  • Grammie Kari

He’s cool; he’s talented; and he has charisma. I really did like what he did with Cher’s song; however, second place would suit him just fine.

  • hardkandy

I love him! That is all =)

Well I freakin’ LOVE him! I think if you dig artists like Freddie Mercury, Bowie, Prince, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, The Killers, Panic at the Disco, early Elton John, etc… then you’ll probably dig Adam. I LOOOOOVE the over the top theatrics. I love all of the crazy things he can do with his voice.

If the above isn’t your cup of tea, then I can see why Adam puts you off. But for ME, I can’t wait to see what he does on AI. He’s one of the few I think who will be brave enough to experiment and push the envelope. I really don’t think Adam is banking on winning. I’m guessing his goal is to first make the tour, then stay on the show long enough to get noticed.

If things don’t work out in America, I can GUARANTEE you they’ll freakin’ go NUTS for him in Europe.

  • templeton

Too theatrical for me & I flove Bowie, Elton, The Killers and Mercury.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Maybe it’s because I refuse to watch youtubes at this stage, but why can’t one love Bowie, Freddie M, Prince, The Killers, etc. and not yet embrace Adam? I do draw the line at Fall Out Boy, however. ;-)

So far, we’ve seen him sing twice, right? And not even for 90 seconds. He has plenty of time to prove himself. Or not.

The competition is just getting started. I don’t know anyone last year at this time singing Cook’s praises.

  • snuffles

Maybe ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because I refuse to watch youtubes at this stage,

That might be the reason. Seriously, if you’ve watched “Crazy” and “Crawl Thru Fire” you’d TOTALLY get the Freddy Mercury/David Bowie comparisons.

Come on! You know you wanna! :o p

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Snuffles, I took your bait and watched “Crawl Thru the Fire” and I do see the Freddie imitation. I’m still not sold. Fun to watch, but I wouldn’t listen to that song on its own. I don’t like wailing too much.

He does look way better androgynous.

  • Diana

There’s something very attractive about him. I think I like him interviews better than singing. So far, his style has just been too too much. Over the top syrupy. I’m not seeing much soul on stage.

  • manny

Thanks for the interview link Hazehel! I love that he is obviously taking everything in and plotting his course in an intelligent way and yet realizing that he’s not going to be everyone’s cuppa.

I just love after he sings Believe, that Simon gives him a thumbs up. Simon’s taste often surprises me, lol. It willl be interesting to see how Adam goes over with him.

  • elisad

IDK what it is, but Adam looks about 37 in that picture. Strange.

Horrible skin. If he keeps doing songs like Believe he’ll be out pretty soon. So, *fingers crossed*

  • St.Lucia

I think any contestant who sparks this much healthy debate and has such a love hate relationship will go at least to top 6.

You either LOVE him or HATE him.

    Either way, he’ll go far.

I’m personally on the love him side. :)

  • cheese

Adam seems like a good guy, genuinely charming, attractive if you don’t look at him too closely. I don’t expect him to hit any bum notes. I’m just not into the song stylings. I can already imagine how he would take any song and make it sound like a woman singing an OTT cabaret style of “Believe” and I really don’t want to hear that. Actually, I don’t mind hearing it within the context of the show – I think Adam will be entertaining if he keeps singing that sort of stuff. I expect him to stay around for awhile, but I hope he doesn’t run away with the show and win the thing. If he does a quiet acoustic number without wailing a bunch of unnecessary high notes just because he can, I might change my mind. I like a little subtlety.

I don’t get the Brandon Flowers or Fall Out Boy comparisons at all (well, he has the same stupid hair dye as Pete Wentz). I love Bowie and get the glam comparisons. Key difference is Bowie sounds like a man. As far as Freddie goes, Adam’s singing strikes me as more of an exaggeration of Freddie’s style – Adam is way more shrill.

  • hcpoirot

Adam had a very good shot to reach top 12.

  • lurksalot

Hmm, maybe some laser skin teatments would help. Not for me , I am on the Adam train. Hopefully, he can shake this season up. Otherwise, ZZZZZ.

  • Natasha

I think he has freckles, that’s all. I can tell.

He’s smart and has an amazing voice. Personally I think he’s good-looking. It’ll be interesting to see how far he pushes the envelope. I agree that without him the season would be kind of a snooze fest.

  • star

I just love after he sings Believe, that Simon gives him a thumbs up. Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s taste often surprises me, lol. It willl be interesting to see how Adam goes over with him.

I was a little freaked out by how much Simon fawned over him in The Chair episode. He usually hates the theater boys!

  • undercooked

I like Adam. He’s seems like a sweet guy when he is being interviewed. I think he has a lot of talent. I think Adam charms everyone, men and women and that’s why Simon was fawning over him along with Kara and Paula. Those ladies stood in line to give him a hug after the chair episode. It’s kind of an unusual dynamic between him and the judges. As far as his looks, I think he’s a ginger haired fellow from what I can tell from his kid pictures, so what you are seeing on his skin are his freckles, I think. I wonder what he would look like with his natural hair color? Not sure if he can win it all as he may be too far out there for some. But I hope he does well and gets what he wants out it.

  • SpenserJ

    I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s glam rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’he just looks glam rock.

I think he looks like a cartoon character.

Maybe ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because I refuse to watch youtubes at this stage, but why canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t one love Bowie, Freddie M, Prince, The Killers, etc. and not yet embrace Adam? I do draw the line at Fall Out Boy, however. ;-)

It is entirely possible PJ for someone to like all of those acts and not like Adam. I see no similarities whatsoever to Bowie or Freddie.

I think I’ve already stated too many times who Adam reminds me of (waves to my fellow Adaminelli’s!). Honestly, he doesn’t have a bad voice, but I have yet to see him do anything on this show that totally blows me away.

The rest of the AI viewers are not going to go searching for his old videos. All they’re going to know of him will be his AI performances. That’s where he has to show who he really is. And, all he’s shown them so far is show tune boy. If that’s who he is, that’s fine, but I think it will be difficult to convince the viewers to choose that persona as the AI winner.

He may indeed be vaulted directly to the Top 3, but I’m not sure he’s winning without removing all that dye from his hair and discontinuing to wear so much makeup. And of course, toning down the theatrics.

Every time I see him, I see future Broadway performer or failing that, future Liza Minelli impersonator (okay, with a good wig, he could probably do Cher). I just don’t get the glam rock vibe and certainly not any kind of plain old rocker vibe at all.

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

Adam is part of the theatrical cabaret tradition which includes Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Scott Walker, David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, and Marc Almond of Soft Cell, to name a few notables. He’s not going to be everybody’s cuppa, but here’s a novel thought. AI has always been about letting the show make stars and then plug them into an existing radio niche. They don’t actually like to spend money the AI contest makes for them on promoting the talent (see Aiken, Clay). What if someone, maybe Adam, became so phenomenally popular that he could actually created his own niche or popularized one long overdue for revival? That is what I have been waiting for.

Regarding Bowie, he actually started out imitating his idol, Scott Walker of the Walker Bros. He exec-produced the current documentary about Scott, 30 Century Man.

The Walker Bros. were three American musicians, not actual brothers, who took the surname Walker and migrated to England in the 1960s — a sort of reverse British invasion. They became bigger in England than the Beatles. When all my childhood friends had crushes on Paul McCartney, I was listening to my sister’s Walker Bros. albums and having an 8-year-old’s fantasies of being Mrs. Scott Walker.

After they scored hits here and in the UK with The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore and Make It Easy on Yourself, the band continued to top the charts in England where Scott became even more popular as a solo artist after the band’s breakup.

Over the decades he became increasingly more experimental musically — you can see his influence over Bowie — and antisocial. I find his recent recordings very strange, such as those where he pounds on a side of beef. Still a resident of England, Walker exerted a huge influence over generations of British musicians, including Bowie, producer Brian Eno, Johnny Marr and Morrissey of the Smiths, Marc Almond, and the band Keane.

  • holeighannie

So I love this guy. Everything about him is everything I hate (the hair, the clothes, etc) but I love how theatrical he is, probably because I love musical theater. I watched his videos from Wicked and he was fabulous, it’s too bad they did Andrew Lloyd Webber/Broadway night last season, haha. I also love Freddie Mercury (not that I think they’re on the same level) so I definitely think there’s a place for the kind of OTT operatic music he could make…hey, it worked for Meat Loaf for decades!

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

If anyone wants to see what we missed on Andrew Lloyd Webber night, here is a video of Adam singing Heaven on Their Minds from Jesus Christ Superstar.

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

It’s not what interests me about him, but Adam’s hair reminds me of an emo-ized Robert Smith of the Cure and that’s not a bad thing.

  • star

I absolutely LOVE that “Heaven On Their Minds” vid, Terrie. I hope Adam can find a find a song to sing on Idol that will allow him to show off his range like that one does.

  • Lu

I think he looks like a cartoon character.

    Waving backatcha my friend!

Okay, so do you think we can get MJ to mention the Liza thing in one of her new articles – now that she’s famous and all? (I’ll totally bake you cookies MJ).

And Adam fans, don’t be upset by my constant Liza Minelli references. I spent the beginning of last season talking about how weird looking I thought David Cook was. So, no worries – this could totally be a good thing. (Sarah knows this – so, she probably squeed with glee the first time I made fun of him).

  • undercooked

The Liza thing doesn’t bother me as long as long as it’s done with love. :) I only worry because there are some folks who may not be that accepting of Adam’s lifestyle and if turns into a punchline, eh, not so fun anymore. I think Adam is very talented, but I would’t mind trimming up the hair a bit. And I agree, David Cook was much improved after the stylist got a hold of him.

  • sunchick

Okay, Adam is probably too polarizing to win, and he will have an uphill battle trying to show America the difference betwen a theatrical musical performance and musical theater, but still…

    CRAWL THRU FIRE

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXvSA6QL7Ac

Hee! See, even though it will be impossible to top last season for me, that right there is why I am probably going to end up watching most of season 8 waiting to see what Adam will do week to week. (My favorite part is the “fiyah fiyah, eee-rupt uh ” :devil_tb:) It’s not everyone who can wear gold lame pants and platform boots and manage to look at home on stage. Believe me, I’ve tried. (Kidding. Maybe.) Plus I actually think his voice is unique and kind of cool.

    Horrible skin.

Nah, I think that’s just freckles. Read somewhere else that he’s naturally a freckled redhead. I can’t picture it, though.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

I had not been following Adam much and wasn’t crazy about the way he looks and the apparent early hype, but after hearing him sing a the last couple of times, I’m thinking now I can get behind this guy.

  • Calliope

Wow, Terrie — I clicked on this thread and am surprised to see talk of Scott Walker. I adore him a lot and just didn’t think this would be a place to see someone talking about that awesome documentary. lol

Anyway, I like Adam. He’s not my main contestant (I am looking forward to what Megan Corkrey might do as I really enjoyed her audition), but I am curious about him. I do think he could be “rock” since I find that to be such a loose genre now which many different singing styles can fit. Even Adam’s theatricality.

  • Natasha

I only worry because there are some folks who may not be that accepting of Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s lifestyle and if turns into a punchline, eh, not so fun anymore.

He seems very secure about who he is. He’s sure of himself in a good way without being arrogant about it. That’s one of the reasons I like him and hopefully people will respect that whether they like his style or not.

  • Suzanne

This guy has almost 100 comments, compared with 16 so far for Lil Rounds. People definitely have some feelings about Adam.

If things donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t work out in America, I can GUARANTEE you theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll freakinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ go NUTS for him in Europe.

So true. I don’t get why that plays there with them, but it does.

Personally, I think that Adam is an incredible vocal talent but after seeing that “crazy” youtube, it’s just too much of a freak for me.

That bad thing about AI is that we judge on stuff that we’d never judge most recording artists on. The whole makeup/androgyny thing–I totally don’t know or care about when I buy music–but when it’s my neighbor, I wonder what point they are trying to make.

  • Suzanne

    The winnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦of American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦2009à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.isà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Not him. He’s too polarizing. He could make it really far, depending on his songs, how he acts, etc. because he’s talented and he’s done a lot of stage performance. But eventually, as less distinctive people drop out of the competition, those voters will start to band together and will vote for someone more mainstream.

Hey, maybe Adam will tone down the drama and the look and it will turn out differently, but right now, he’s just too out there for the masses. He’s going to have a huge die-hard voting base, but the vanilla fans will eventually overtake his base as people drop out.

I mean–come on–Carly was out last year b/c the masses would not vote for someone who sang “Jesus Christ” without the words “my Lord and saviour” immediately following.

  • Natasha

I meanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’come onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Carly was out last year b/c the masses would not vote for someone who sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jesus Christà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ without the words à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“my Lord and saviourà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ immediately following.

We don’t know for sure that was the reason Carly was voted off. I doubt she would have gone much further no matter what she sang. She didn’t have the fan base to beat either Jason or Brooke and she could have gone the week MJ was voted off.

I do agree that the Idol audience in general has more of a vanilla taste. I’m genuinely curious to see how someone like Adam would play in say, Peoria.

Adam will be the next American Idol.

Too theatrical? So was Mercury, Prince, Bowie, Tyler… I think he’s in a great club!

This guy has the vocal range none of the other contestants have.
Talented, intelligent… nay… GENIUS, the guy is a musical GENIUS.
Whomever can’t get a grip on this fact, doesn’t know squat about music or talent.

  • Lamberkitten

Just wondered what happened to the “Whole Lotta Love” video on the site? I have it from itunes on my ipod but was always cool to come back here and see the judges comments. Just wondered why some videos disappear and others stay is all. Thanks.
