UPDATE: Adam tweeted some more:

I also wrote on four songs on the album. “Strut”, “Aftermath” “Broken Open” and “Down the Rabbit Hole” (iTunes bonus track)

Adam Lambert dropped a few tidbits this morning about his upcoming album, For Your Entertainment, via twitter:

Thanks guys! :) Well here’s some more album info for you guys! The upcoming single was produced by Dr Luke!!

There’s a rumor that the single is a Pink/Max Martin tune, initially meant for her Funhouse album.   But could the single be “Entertainment”   the album title track, written by   Claude Kelly and Dr. Luke?   Or, perhaps, one of the tunes we haven’t heard about yet?   Hm.

There’s more:

There is also a song called “Soaked” written by Muse! Also a tune called “Music Again” written by Justin Hawkins of the Darkness!

We knew about the Justin Hawkins tune, but the Muse song is brand new information. I’ll be back with an update about that after I check it out. That’s pretty exciting news. Muse is awesome.

And lastly, Adam’s glam/retro album cover has gotten mixed reviews.   Here’s what Adam has to say to the naysayers:

Thank you to those who appreciate and understand that the album cover is deliberately campy. It’s an homage to the past. It IS ridiculous.

For those that don’t get it: oh well… Glad to have gotten your attention.

It’s an interesting concept that could have been executed better. The cover looks like yet another Idol album done on the fast and cheap. I don’t a bad CD cover will hurt record sales (who even buys CDs these days).

  • saga

The muse thing is pretty awesome if that’s true. Is it written by them for Adam? Or was it something lying around like the pink song?

  • IdolThoughts

Can we please, please, please have the single already? PLEASE!!!

  • Studio57

MUSE! MUSE. MUSE? I am still in shock. I always wondered why Matt Bellamy never said anything public about Adam even when asked since Adam sang two of their songs ( Starlight/Feeling Good) and plugged them every chance he got.

He was sitting aona big huge F’in bombshell, that’s why!

  • IdolThoughts

I just lurked around reading the reaction of Muse fans and overall it isn’t good. EXCEPT…for the fact that most of them say they will buy the song simply because Matt Bellamy wrote it!

  • CindyM

Woohoo! I don’t think the single can be the Pink/Max Martin song, because Max Martin produced that according to the IDF list you used the other day, MJ. I wonder if it is Entertainment or another song?? Also, Adam references producer Claude Kelly in conjunction with Doctor Luke in his tweets:

ClaudeKelly: YO! @adamlambert sang his ass off!!! What a talent! the session was a success. Yay!!!!! *confetti falling in my head*7:45 PM Sep 23rd from web”

adamlambert:”@ClaudeKelly is amazing! Honestly one of the most supportive and reassuring guys I’ve ever had the pleasure to record with!
12:53 AM Sep 24th from Echofon in reply to ClaudeKelly”

adamlambert:”And the good dr Luke is gonna spin that session into GOLD! (as he does)
12:54 AM Sep 24th from Echofon”

I haven’t seen any other mentions of Dr. Luke, but they may exist. I just can’t wait for the music!!! I love Adam’s voice, love who he is and am eager for more!

  • dhunken

More excitement from Adam Universe…..Song by Muse…cool…The Dr.Luke thing I think is the Entertainment Song. Which I think will be a great single to start his many singles sure to hit top 10 for many many months to come from the album. IMHO

Kind of like I find a lot of “kings of leon” fans now that they’re huge. It cracks me up, because they want great success for their favorites, but don’t want anyone else to know about them because they belong to them and they may change a bit due to the new audience. Hmmm..kinda sounds like some Idol fans too. :) I guess every artist has fans like that, when you think about it.

Muse!!!! This is great news. Pink, GaGA, Muse, McCartney ´s guitarist. I cannot wait for the album. This waiting is becoming unbearable.

I totally agree. And in fact the designer said that she was rushing to finish Adam’s cover, and I think it shows. Of course just because it turned out poorly, isn’t a reason why she should be bombarded with negative Tweets and comments on her blog, as she was. Poor kid and bad! fanbase to do that. I mean I loathe the cover and I still wouldn’t do that.

Anyhew, so Entertainment sounds like the first single, good! uptempo dancey and Claude Kelly/Dr Luke is a good combo.

And a Muse song? That is SOOOOO effin’ cool! I’m so stoked about it. How cool for Adam to have that. Maybe that was the song Lyndsey couldn’t talk about? Or maybe she couldn’t talk, because she would explode form the fangirldom of it all.

  • BeckyMD

I want to know what’s going on in Lyndsay Parker’s head. :D

So true. I’m a fan of both bands but steer clear of their message boards because of the toxicity and entitlement that inhabits them. Dude…isn’t music the universal language? If you love something…wouldn’t you WANT to share it and have it see some measure of success? It’s just weird to me. Oh well! I hope Muse releases some sort of a statement or we get some clarification on how this came about. Did Matt Bellamy write it for Adam? Was it a song that they wrote and just tossed Adam’s way? Deets!!!

Yeah, they do- all three of my kids are like that. Hell, I think I was too back in my younger days. Then I grew up and realized no band in their right mind would trade obscurity for boatloads of cash :)

I am glad the first song is not the Pink one- it sounded kind of like a downer. he needs a party starter! Or a shit stirrer. Whichever. I just know it won’t be boring, lol.

  • carol522

I don’t think the cover was rushed…its what Adam was going for. If he didn’t like it, he could have substituted any number of pictures. I appreciate that he didn’t opt for the dreamy, dopey looking covers of recent Idols. (see MTV’s Jim Cantiello’s hilarous send-up of recent Idol covers)

  • oceanarose

Ok so I was a little worried that I wouldn’t really like the type of music on this album but the more I hear about it the less worried and the more excited I get. I like the music of all the artist that he has confirmed wrote songs so I will probably like them. I don’t squee too often (I don’t think I ever have here) but it must be done now.

    OMG Muse!!!!! Squeeeeeeee!!!

  • CCAdamFan

Cannot wait for the music! I feel *better* about the album cover, given his explanation. But I will likely download the album, instead of buying the physical cd. My concern is the album cover will turn off casual listeners that would otherwise be fans but are put off by the cover. But it would seem that Adam is taking a calculated risk and the knows what he is doing.

  • 4evrmomof4

    saga,

I don’t think it matters- if it is written for Adam, then cool, if not and they gave permission to use one of their songs they haven’t recorded, then that is cool, too..

    WAAAAY cool either way……

  • Natasha

Still love the cover. Frankly I think the negativity all boils down to the fact that some of his fans want him to appear masculine 24/7 and freaked out over the feminine vibe. Maybe they’ll handle it better now that they know it’s supposed to be campy. JMO.

Dr. Luke? That would end the rumor that the Pink song is the single. This Muse song sounds pretty damn interesting. I’m very curious to actually hear some music and that’s putting it mildly.

Muse? Unbelievable. So effen unbelievable. I so love Muse. No wonder Bellamy was mum when Lyndsey Parker asked him about Adam. How the heck did Adam score that? No wonder he is so excited about his album. I am still not believing that (I know it’s true, but…).

BTW, Adam was really good in his intervews on the red carpet. It’s like he’s been doing that for 20 years. He is such a natural, and he and Katy Perry had to have been the cutest couple ever. She really is gorgeous.

I found it funny that despite interviews and/or tweets from various people including Adam, we thought we knew everything or everyones that Adam was working with/on. And now, Muse! news dropped, and we never even suspected it. I felt like Adam sure is working super hard behind the scenes (for our entertainment). What’s not to love about this guy. By the way, the cover has grown on me. I love it now. You go Adam! :)

  • glamatheart

I was more than a little discouraged last night after viewing the album cover. Adam’s tweets made me feel a little better but I agree with mj that it could have been executed a lot better.

The feminine/masculine thing is not the reason I don’t like it. He could be in a dress for all I care. (I have Bowie covers in which he does just that.) It’s just that Adam is capable of so much more. So much better. I am disappointed that he chose a cover that’s supposed to be campy, supposed to be ridiculous and ultimately supposed to be laughed at as his introduction to the world outside the AI bubble.

“Glamour Shots photo” Black Velvet painting” “Cartoon” “bad ’80′s art”, (all desecriptions of the CD cover) yikes! But at least Adam’s staying true to his mantra “it’s not that deep”. It certainly isn’t cutting edge either.

Still holding out hope that the music will hold some artistic value. Entertianment does not have to be devoid of any meaning or emotion.

It never looked cheap to me; it just looked like a Boy George do-over. After reading the comments here and on twitter, and sleeping on it, it has grown on me. It’s supposed to be retro. And the stars in the background are his glittery alien personal touch.

I’m sure it did. But Adam has a lot of detractors, particularly at EW and MTV so he had to know that people who normally don’t care for him would have a lot to say about it. As long as the music is good though it won’t matter. You all should look at Rhianna’s CD cover. lol Adam’s cover has nothing on that!

Yeah, Queen was pretty rediculous in their days. I still remember the video to I got to break free. I thought it was terrible. And didn’t Freddy have some kind of pants with holes for the butt cheeks?

“I want to Break Free” was written for members of the Women’s Liberation Movement. The video, which featured all the band members in OTT drag, was a parody of Britain’s most popular soap opera “Coronation Street”, a favorite theme of which is the longing to break out of the meager existance of everyday life. Some say the alternate scenes of the video, in which Freddie dances with scantily clad men, was symbolism for his desire to come out of the closet about his sexuality.

Anywho, the song ultimately became a theme song of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.

So, even in ther “ridiculousness” the band members were making a statement.

  • Lynneville

    Lyndsey Parker review of Entertainment:
“Entertainment” – The default title track and statement of intent, masterminded by Dr. Luke (Katy Perry) and Claude Kelly (Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson), Adam opens this one up, Rocky Horror-meets-Robbie Williams-style, with the audacious declaration: “I’m here for your entertainment!” And he ain’t kidding. This is an ultra-caffeinated party-starter (imagine if Mika, Sam Sparro, and Kevin Rudolf had a threesome that resulted in the conception of a glittery alien baby…if you dare), and it’s just begging to be remixed by everyone from Calvin Harris to the Neptunes to Justice–even though it sounds like a shiz-hawt remix already, as is.

Why does it matter when it was registered…no one has recorded it. Perhaps Bellamy was holding the song for other reasons-like waiting for the right singer or sound.

De- lurking again to squee with you. Huge Muse fan here. I’ve been following them for years. I have all their cds and b- sides. No this song hasn’t been released anywhere. It could be an old song but who cares. You have to know that Bellamy is very protective with his music. I don’t remember him giving a song to anyone. I still cannot believe it. Because, plain and simple Bellamy (IMHO) is a genius. I don’t care about the album cover (which I ADORE) and the reactions anymore. This is simply surreal for me.
And yes Muse fans are snobs and they don’t like anybody who dares to cover Muse’s songs but they already asking about Adam’s album. WIN WIN

I didn’t see this thread before…I need to go back to add to it, b/c you know I will. But damn, I hate when well-known musicians (Pink, GaGa) offer their songs to other singers, and the singers say,NOPE, I prefer the song about the monkey, b/c no one brought that one to me. It’s an interesting concept that could have been executed better. The cover looks like yet another Idol album done on the fast and cheap. It’s not going to stop me from buying the record, but there it is’ ¦

Well people may not like the cover. But that cover was neither done fast or cheaply.

    1. Warwick Saint (photographer) and Fuka (Sony Music’s Senior Creative Director) are two of the best in the world.

    2. The photo/illustration appears to include a portrait composite (multiple Adam images), with a significant about of illustration. That is very time consuming.

    3. People may love it or hate it, but it doesn’t look like just another Idol album cover to me. Has Sony ever had Fuko herself work on an Idol album cover?

    4. It is getting press coverage — lots of press coverage. Does anyone remember a CD cover being a news story like this before? Sure, old albums like St. Peppers and The White Album were stories — but inthe CD/digital era when has this happened?

Most important — reviews from Rock and Metal sites are coming in positive for the cover. Same for most of the press reviews, including Asian and European press.

yeah if you have to have sloppy seconds, you may as well get them from the likes of Pink, Gaga & Muse …lol

Oh, Adam, how I love thee. ‘It IS ridiculous!’ Hilarious. I’m kind of digging the cover; I thought it was intentionally tongue-in-cheek, although I must admit I miss his freckles.

Remind me about Adam’s interview in Idolatry. At the end, he said to Slezak that (paraphrased) “I can take some picks on me. I know I’m ridiculous. You guys get it”.

  • suebrody

I had never heard of Muse (my bad) before the Tour. (Of course Lyndsey had and was a big ole fan.) I first heard Starlight and thought, Hm, interesting, I dunno. But the more I heard it, the more I liked it. I proceeded to buy the Muse album from 2006, I think, and then this one, and can I tell you HOW MUCH I LOVE BOTH OF THEM?! I know that Muse was rather ticked off initially b/c Mr. Bellamy thought Idol Nation only knew of them through Adam, but apparently that has changed. SO EXCITED! Damn Snow Patrol opened for U2 in Boston (like SP, LOVE Muse, lucky ppl who saw Muse), but a Muse/Adam double bill would BLOW.MY.MIND.

How much do I want Entertainment to be the first single? OH SO VERY MUCH. Danceability! (And it goes perfectly with the name of the album, so that’s why I hoped for it as soon as I heard the name of it and read Lyndsey’s review.)

    *flailing*

Looks like the album cover was designed after this:

Most important ‘” reviews from Rock and Metal sites are coming in positive for the cover. Same for most of the press reviews, including Asian and European press.

Eh, most stuff I’ve heard on the web is negative, even from the majority of Adam fans. This is why Adam made those Tweets addressing it, and the designer of it had to shut down her Twitter and blog, because of all the negative comments about it. Which isn’t cool. And other places like MTV and EW may be “positive,” about it, but by saying it’s camp and laughable. Which fine, if that’s what Adam wants. If he wants even his fans to go that they’d be embarrassed to buy the album and will buy the iTunes to avoid the cover, than job well done.

And it’s worse that Fuka and Warwick Saint were involved, not better, because it sucks. Oh and Fuko did say that she was rushing to finish this cover, IIRC, so there is that. But it would be an even bigger failure to think that this was something someone intended do to. I get the concept, but the execution is fail. And yeah, if you have to explain it was supposed to be campy and ridiculous, it’s a failure.

Anyway- I have to say that when I saw Ring of Fire, Muse was all I could think of. That’s how I described Adam to my brother- I said there’s this guy who took a Johnny Cash song and completely “Mused it up”, and that got my bro interested. They’ve been pretty famous for the last 8 years in Europe (and Israel), so I’m glad they finally broke into the States… And having Adam sing a song written by Matt Bellamy? Wow… just wow…

  • CindyM

Really? Much of the stuff I’ve seen is positive and the cover is everywhere from blogs to ABC News.

The fans freaking out over it are probably the same ones who freaked out over Ring Of Fire. Like I said I think he has fans who want him to look masculine and act straight all the time and they had a meltdown over the feminine aspect of this cover. Frankly I don’t even understand why people would freak out over a CD cover in the first place although yesterday’s cover-gate was highly entertaining.

As for the cover designer, Adam has some of the most entitled fans I’ve ever seen. They think they know best and throw a fit if they don’t get what they want and they’ve been twitter bombing her with their entitled complaints. I hope she can get her life back now that Adam has stepped in.

  • NewFan

Adam Lambert must be feeling overjoyed. If I were in his shoes I would be ecstatic. So many people that he respects … are getting behind him … not just by word … but also by time or bankbook and by action. It’s amazing.

And now MUSE as well. That must be a special thing for one of their number one fans. We don’t know the ins an outs of this but Adam has enthusiastically shared his love of MUSE’s music with as many people as he could and it’s really nice to see that they have noticed him, and his talent, enough to want to make a contribution to his project.

    Super pleased for you Adam.

Do you think there’s a chance some of the songs EW listed didn’t end up on the album. The article was written awhile ago and he said they just made the final decision Monday. I don’t know why the would have let them list them if they weren’t sure they were going to put them on but maybe things changed once they finished recording. It’s possible they decided another song would be better.

  • PattyH

So, if there is also a Walmart Bonus track, then we probably need 2 – 3 more titles and we’re done!
    The Alisan/Ferras song is Aftermath.

Adam’s FYE (with the new cover art) is #8 on Amazon. He was in the top 10 yesterday, but slipped to #11 about midnight then right back up. He’s #8 with green rod standing proudly.

I would bet that Redone produced at least Strut (RS picture of him recording was at the same time as the Redone interview) and maybe one of the others he just mentioned? Not Aftermath though, that seems to have been recorded AFTER the redone sessions.

Here’s the list from IDF coupled with Adam’s latest tweets, but not sure that these are on the album. That’s why I only listed those confirmed so far through EW, Lyndsey or Adam.

    Obsession (Ryan Tedder, J_Skins)
Music Again** (Rob Cavallo, Justin Hawkins of the Darkness)
    Suburban Decay (Rob Cavallo)
    Winners** (Rob Cavallo)
What Do You Want From Me (Pink, Max Martin) (Cut from Pink’s Funhouse sessions)
    Strut** (Adam Lambert, Kara DioGuardi)
Loaded Smile (Adam Lambert, Linda Perry)
    Aftermath (songwriters/producers unknown)
    Entertainment** ‘“ (Claude Kelly/Dr. Luke)
    Time For Miracles** (Rob Cavallo)
Sleep Walker – (Aimee Mayo, Chris Lindsay, Ryan Tedder)
Lady Gaga track ‘“ Title Unknown
    Aftermath ‘“ Adam confirmed cowrote
Soaked ‘“ Adam confirmed written by Matthew Bellamy
Broken Open ‘“ Adam confirmed cowrote
Lady Gaga track ‘“ Adam confirmed
Down the Rabbit Hole (bonus track) ‘“ Adam confirmed cowrote

There may be some I’m missing.

    Suebrody,

    The Alisan/Ferras song is Aftermath

  • Mary102

Has ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ anything to do with Alice in wonderland?

I’m not seeing a pile-on either? I’ve seen a lot of dislike and like for the cover. I’m actually surprised at the extremes that have been expressed, but have been allowed (by fans) to stand without comments. (and by allowed-I mean not even argued against) That’s the way it should be. Am I missing something?

  • alxsavage

Whoah! I’m blown away with these news, a Muse tune on Adam’s album! And we thought that a Gaga song was the greatest thing that could happen for him. It’s funny because both sounds make sense, I really, really want to know how an album that includes these kind of tracks will sound, there’s nothing as mainstream as Muse and Gaga right now.

To be honest, Muse fans should aknowledge that the band is too good to be unknown, it was just a matter of people hearing about them, they truly are innovative. I first heard about them when I found “Unintended” by accident some years ago, but to be honest, Twilight was the one thing that put them on the spotlight and I don’t care, and I really think they are thankful for that, they’ve given them a song for each soundtrack and they are thinking about making a tune for the 3rd movie, while their fans keep on hating Twilight just because it took their “cool unknown” band away from them.

I feel exactly the opposite way when it comes to Adam, I really want him to be liked by the general audience, that’s why I was so dissappointed with the cover. If I don’t like it I can just change the iTunes picture and never look at it again, it’s the general reaction what truly worries me, but I have faith on him, and I’m relieved to know that he aknowledges how ridiculous it is and embraces it because of that.

  • Chicagolaw

You’ve been waiting since May, now you finally get to see it! The cover of Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment. I’ll be curious to see what you guys think. Honestly, I’m not sure what to say about it. How can Adam fans help but love it? How can Adam haters help but, well, snicker? And will the rest of us confess to a sudden urge to go to a roller disco?

Um, I didn’t really think Roller Disco when I saw it…I kind of get the masculine/feminine idea of the cover, tho if that’s true I wish it has been defined a bit more.

I am surprised that Aimee’s cut didn’t seem to make the album, since she wrote it with her husband and Ryan Tedder. Is he on here?

  • windmills

No Linda Perry/Adam cowrite makes me sad. But a Matthew Bellamy written Soaked makes me happy.

I don’t think it’s necessary for Adam to act like people who don’t like his cover don’t “get it”. IMO it comes off as him acting superior. Plenty of people get what he was going for and think he didn’t succeed on artistic grounds. Me – I think a successfully campy cover would have showed Adam with a more knowing, stronger expression. I bet there are alternate photos from the same shoot that I’d have picked instead. I also don’t think the composition of the cover is effective at conveying Adam as the decisive and secure person that he is.

  • PattyH

Ferras’ tune made it in, but I don’t know the name of it.. I don’t think Aimee’s did (Sleepwaker). She has gone MIA. I will tweet her again. Sadness for Aimee.

Frankly I don’t even understand why people would freak out over a CD cover in the first place although yesterday’s cover-gate was highly entertaining.

Those are not the Adam fans who have an issue with these things. I’m not talking some AO weirdos who might want Adam to be secretly bi or straight. I’m talking places like ontd_ai which not only doesn’t have a problem with Adam’s feminine side, they celebrate it constantly. And RoF is loved there, and with most Adam fans I know (myself included), loved RoF immediately. I know some didn’t, but these are not the Adam fans I’m talking about.

And people freak out about the cover, because it’s bad. Fans because they want him to do well, haters because this fits right into every bad thing they’ve ever said about Adam. And even with people who have never seen Adam and don’t know him at all, the overwhelming response has been negative. Like I said, even a fan of his was saying that they would buy it on iTunes now to avoid this cover. Will they still buy it? Sure, if the music is good, and that’s the important thing.

So I am truly thankful for Adam’s Tweets about his actual music and about stuff that sounds good, because hopefully that can help people move past this craptastic cover and focus on the important stuff…the tunes.

Love ya Sue, but don’t you think if Aimee has gone MIA, it might be because she’s upset that her song may not have made it? Maybe it would be better to let her surface when she’s ready to, rather than tweet and maybe bring it all up for her again.

  • Chicagolaw

I wonder if Adam was encouraged by higher-ups to put some album/song info out there to try and diffuse some of the negativity swirling around the cover. Or, maybe we are finally getting close and he is just excited.

No, I was kidding. This was in response to someone saying that his album cover looked cheesy, like the People’s Choice Idol page…GaGa’s gonna win it, anyway. Adam might win next year. How can Adam and Kris win before their albums have been released, honestly? GaGa has had 4 #1s and Adam and Kris…none to date.

My head hurts again. The Adam Storm is f**king with my brain.

Aftermath is Ely/Alisan/Ferras’ track. Is that one still under consideration? I thought it made it…

Yeah, no more tweets to Aimee, tho honestly I thought she’d get in b/c she co-wrote it with Tedder…

Wait, if he only co wrote on four songs on the album, does that mean Loaded Smile, which he cowrote with Linda Perry, DIDN’T MAKE IT? No way. NO WAY. There has to be a way for me to hear that song, at least, because I love Linda Perry’s work and I love the concept of the song and I love the title and I HAVE TO HAVE IT, okay? *cries*

I’m excited to hear the single! If it’s “Entertainment” yay, I loved Lyndsey Parker’s description of the song, and Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly are a good combination…see “Circus,” “Party In The USA,” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Obviously YMMV but those are quality pop songs imo. :) I still think “What Do You Want From Me” is a possibility too, because Dr. Luke and Max Martin often work on the same tracks. I’m good with either song.

Maybe they changed the name of “Loaded Smile” to “Broken Open”?

    I’m happy “Strut” made it!!!!

I also don’t think that Aimee’s twitter silence is necessarily a sign that her song didn’t make it. Maybe she’s containing her glee until the track list is revealed officially.

That’s a lot you got from a tweet that can be what, 146 characters? He could have gone into the artistic choices made and why those may or may not appeal to everyone, but it’s a tweet. Kind of limited in how much you can express. Maybe he’ll talk about it more in depth later, maybe not. I hope not, for me it’s done.

  • BeckyMD

I like the song title ‘loaded smile’. I hope we can somehow hear it.

  • suebrody

    Aftermath ‘“ Adam confirmed cowrote

He co-wrote it with Ferras and Alisan? What about Ely? I bet if he co-wrote it it’s got a good chance of making it onto the album.

    Leakage TODAY, please, Adam…

I wonder if Adam was encouraged by higher-ups to put some album/song info out there to try and diffuse some of the negativity swirling around the cover. Or, maybe we are finally getting close and he is just excited.

I’m going with A and B, but more B. That is, he was told he COULD start talking about it, so he infused some of his own 140 character comments into it, whilst discussing the album, finally!!!

THIS is funny (tho I like RS’s better). Will let you know if I hear from Aimee

LMAO, so idol albums tend to get crappy covers, it’s funny when you look at it like this, but I still believe that Adam’s got the worst album cover I’ve ever seen.

“For Your Entertainment’s” artwork is crazier than a thousand Paulas put together

Jim Cantiello, you are brilliant, no one could have said it better!

Ehh, sue, you need to focus. I think Aftermath is pretty confirmed to have made the cut…

I think Adam’s tweet was fine. And I am one of the people who doesn’t quite “get it” (mainly because I think the concept wasn’t executed very well), but it certainly has my attention. Regardless, disliking the cover won’t stop me from buying the album.

  • jinxx315

I love it when they have bonus tracks because sometimes they are better than some of the songs that make the album. As far as the album art goes, I think people need to lighten up. :)

  • Natasha

And people freak out about the cover, because it’s bad. Fans because they want him to do well, haters because this fits right into every bad thing they’ve ever said about Adam. And even with people who have never seen Adam and don’t know him at all, the overwhelming response has been negative. Like I said, even a fan of his was saying that they would buy it on iTunes now to avoid this cover.

I see YOU think it’s bad but I’ve been on ontd_ai and IDF today and I see mostly positive posts.

As for the fan you mentioned maybe she could try putting a paper bag over her head while she’s in the store.

  • Mary102

Eh, most stuff I’ve heard on the web is negative, even from the majority of Adam fans.

Well, the comments run the gammut, but I’m generally seeing more and more of a sense of acceptance of the album cover from those who originally didn’t like it.

Seeing things like the press response (Cantiello, RS, etc.) and Adam’s tweets about it are generally seeming to make people calm the eff down about it, and realize it’s not that deep when you get down to it, and yet, at the same time, it can lead to all of these interesting discussions about it.

In the end, it’s getting a lot of press, more than if it had just been an ok cover.

I’ve commented on this once already, but I’m not sure where it ended up. I visit two Adam fansites and they are running at about 90% in favor of the album cover. Anyone else that visits Adam fansites seeing the same thing?

Yes. I see mostly positive, with a healthy percentage that are just bemused, lol. Which pretty much describes my reaction, though not in a bad way, necessarily. Anyway, most of the fans are back to flailing over the music info, which is what Adam intended I’m sure :)

BTW, of all the media reactions, I think Michelle Collins of Best Week Ever was the only one that really got what Adam was going for. But she’s just awesome like that. I hope she gets to interview him again sometime.

Well, I like the titles. At least they don’t sound depressingly generic. I could get into stuff that’s dancy and electronic while maintaining some quirkiness.

Quirkiness is something that I’ve missed on most of the Idol debut albums. They tend to sound so assembly-line to me.

Dare I hope that Adam’ll have at least a couple of tunes that have something else going on? ….

Probably not — they’ll probably be mainly assembly-line with just enough quirkiness to sound awkward and badly written, if the past is any indication! Nevertheless, I intend to go on hoping until I find out for myself!

  • Squirrely

I see YOU think it’s bad but I’ve been on ontd_ai and IDF today and I see mostly positive posts.

Most of what I’ve read else where has been positive too. Aside from a few he’s too ‘gay’ or ‘feminine’ remarks most I’ve read and from the people I’ve shown the cover to thinks he’s gorgeous.

My head hurts again. The Adam Storm is f**king with my brain.

“”And lastly, Adam’s glam/retro album cover has gotten mixed reviews. Here’s what Adam has to say to the naysayers:

I don’t get this comment MJ. Is it a preventative measure? I’m reading the thread from start to finish right now. The cover is predominantly disliked and I don’t see any defensiveness coming from any of us who like it. There isn’t even any discussion anymore. Those who dislike it are treating their opinion as though it were a fact and nobody has even challenged that … let alone piled on it.

I agree with this but I am sure you are in agreement that it goes both ways…no one should pile up on anyone who likes or dare I say loves it. As for Adam telling us what to think…On some level I agree with you but I can imagine the tons and tons of people telling him what he should have done or how horrible the concepts is or that he just doesn’t get it…. I think you can appreciate that he may have gotten frustrated and this was his answer to what was being hurled at him. I know you get your fair share of people trying to tell you how to run your blog and have seen some responses from you that may be considered not properly executed but I have always seen them as understandable reactions to rudeness or ott remarks or rule breaking. So maybe you can understand where he may be coming from in a tweet that is only 140 characters and him trying to express his thoughts.

  • Truthiness

I see YOU think it’s bad but I’ve been on ontd_ai and IDF today and I see mostly positive posts.

As for the fan you mentioned maybe she could try putting a paper bag over her head while she’s in the store.

Were you in the original thread for this cover on ontd_ai? It wasn’t pretty and even Adam fans were WTAF, and indeed the majority opinion in the poll was “What the fuck is this?” followed by “It’s so Adam.”. IDF seemed to hate it last time I was there, most of them didn’t like it. If Adam fans have ‘come around,’ or at least made peace with it, that’s typical. But the reactions I had seen, were not good. But then I also go to sites that have causual viewers, or non AI viewers, as as well as Adam fans and haters, and yeah the reaction hasn’t been good there uniformly, and with a 40% Adam fans liking it.

But I have never claimed to that any of this is scientific. Nor is your saying that it’s loved at those places is, either. We are both just checking the pulse of places. That pulse may change with time as well.

Eh. Hopefully the music will be so good, it won’t matter. But I thinking denying that this has gotten some really bad reactions, even among Adam fans, doesn’t do Adam any favours. Again, this is why Adam Tweeted about it, he had been getting TONS of negative responses from his fans. This is why Fuka had to shut down her Twitter and blog, lots of negative responses from Adam fans.

Despite the fact that Adam has told us what we should think about his album cover, posters here still get to hate it without a pile one’ ¦

I don’t think Adam has told anyone what to think of his album cover. He has told us what he thinks and feels about it and has also said if you don’t like it, have at. I don’t get the feel that anyone feels constrained from expressing their like or dislike because of fear of a “pile on”.

But my original intent in posting: I am loving these song titles! I really can’t wait to hear this album! I know I won’t like it all but I think I will seriously love a lot of it.

  • Mary102

So in the space of about a week Adam has raised a ruckus 1) for posing like a very hetero James Dean and kissing a naked woman in Details and 2) for an album cover that makes him look like a freaky 70s glam goddess from outer space’ ¦.what will next week bring?!?!?!

This is really him in a nutshell – going from one extreme to another, rather effortlessly at that. It keeps things interesting, that’s for sure.

Honestly, mj, despite the fact that you have told us what we should think (by the very wording of this) I think Adam was trying to explain what the vision of it was. I still don’t like it much but I never got the sense he was trying to tell me what to think.

ITA, glamatheart. I saw some snarkiness in other threads (hence, I left them), but not in this one. I think everyone here is excited about the album. I am still not enthralled with the cover, but I could care less about the cover right now, b/c I am so excited about (as is Adam) the music!!! And my supervisor has seen the Details spread (he gets the mag and he’s gay) and the cover art and he’s like, Eh, I’m indifferent. (His words, not mine.) Which leads me to believe that:

If you like/loveAdam, you buy the album.
If you don’t like/detest Adam, you don’t buy the album.
If you are on the fence, you listen to some tracks and either download them or buy or don’t buy the album.

    YMMV.

IMHO, Adam tried too get too cute by half with the album cover. Maybe reading too much of his own press and starting to believe that he is all that. The fact is he really is still an untried artist and really isn’t in a position to get “snarky” quite yet.

It has to be hard to stay humble given all the adoration Adam has received. However, I have to say that a wee bit of arrogance has crept into his manner lately. He needs to watch that.

With such high expectations, the potential for a backlash if his first song isn’t a mega-hit is great.

I believe Adam should have gone with a cover pic that appealed to everyone. If his aim was “ridiculous” I believe he gets an A+ for that.

A CD cover (picture only) is approximately 5″ x 5″. Some of us will need reading glasses to read the liner notes. How’s that for perspective?

Some of my favorite cd covers are broken and the cd isn’t even there.

I’m old enough (47) to remember ALBUM covers that were considered art and worthy of framing. A tiny CD cover isn’t worth the fuss.

You know we have song titles and we have writers…maybe some of the song titles match up to some of the extra writers we have listed. I just get the feeling that “down the rabbit hole” might be the Lady GaGa tune. This whole thing is like trying to put a Rubic’s (or however you spell it) cube together.

The main resource any committee-reviewed project can have is an iron clad strategy. Preferably in writing. Sworn to by all involved. Clearly stating the intention and goal of the project’s impact.

Adam’s tweets about his cover show that it was on shaky strategic ground from the get go. He mentioned:

    Campy, Ridiculous, Homage, Androgyny

This is not a good strategic mix. Especially for a debut album. It might be interesting as a video one day. But not for an introduction of a major talent.

As gangreen26, I believe, pointed out in the cover thread, earlier today, campy does not create good homage.

The most important word missing from that strategic litany is sexy. And if one had a “Sexy Androgynous Homage” strategy, one could have excitingly innovated. The FYE cover is not androgynous. That’s one of its problems, IMHO. It’s an air-brushed, anime-tronic, dull, languid close-up of Pink’s previously unknown sister wearing some kind of blue feather hat. (And mileage varies widely on that, of course.)

Sexy Androgyny lights all fires. It’s supposed to disturb and beguile. To make anyone with any chromosome combination take one look and “want some” and not even be exactly sure why or why the same sex stuff is suddenly so compelling, but be so turned on they no longer care. This, too, would have been interesting and newsworthy and fitting with Adam’s core marketability: He’s raging, smoldering hot. Both for his delicate beauty and his unstoppable alpha male. Both is androgyny. It takes both.

We also didn’t get a picture that fits the title. Perhaps the interior photos will create an unified artistic expression that doesn’t need tweeted asterisks.

Some very smart and admirable people who make this blog a fun place liked it. I’m happy for them. But way too many people of similar ilk felt creatively dissappointed for this to be a home run.

And people who think this is about wanting hunkier guy shots are so off base and not reading all the posts. This is about feeling like magic was possible. And it didn’t happen. (And failing magic, at least some savvy marketing. Or decent typography.)

Adam’s tweets felt sad to me. It must have been sad to feel he had to do it. Like he actually understood it wasn’t just haters, or homophobes, or dimwits who were upset. He’s never getting those people anyway (and may their narrowness fall from existence soon.)

The tweets felt that he might have understood that people who love him and want him to make magic everytime, even when it is impossible to do that, thought that the picture was ridiculous, and not in a good way. And the typography Power Point level atrocious.

    ptslittlecomment said that.

It’s just that Adam is capable of so much more.

The tweets made me sad. He never wants to let us down. And he wanted all those who love him delighted and celebrating this big moment with him. Some of us still love him and celebrate him. Just not this particular cover.

Adam is too smart to only want people who will say “yes” and “love it” every time he wants to light his hair on fire.

The music tweets, however, were thrilling. And there will be magic there.

Despite the fact that Adam has told us what we should think about his album cover, posters here still get to hate it without a pile one’ ¦

It’s partly preventative, and it felt necessary because I had a bit of cleanup to do when I woke up this morning.

Let me rephrase here: Adam felt the need to explain his vision and then follow it up with a remark akin to “well the kewl kids get it, and if you don’t? Oh well!”

I’m betting that some of his fans who expressed dislike of the cover are going to try very hard to see things Adam’s way, because they want to “get it” too.

I also expect some fans to use his words to diminish the naysayers, much the same way Adam’s phrases “It Ain’t That Deep” and “buy the other guy’s record” are often used to diminish negative opinions.

I don’t know about negative tweets, but Adam has been pushing buttons long enough to know that, when you push it to the edge, there’s going to be a negative reaction, always. I’m actually a little surprised he got defensive, rather than embrace the mixed reaction.

But anyway. Yes, I’m finally getting a chance to look through some of these threads (after my server crash today) and it’s not bad with a couple of exceptions.

My reminder is just something to keep in mind as we proceed here.

  • Squirrely

I’m old enough (47) to remember ALBUM covers that were considered art and worthy of framing. A tiny CD cover isn’t worth the fuss.

I hope they put this on vinyl because I want the bigger album cover.

  • http://twitter.com/glamtwinkle twinkle

lol, Q3… your rapid analysis skills never cease to amaze me. and i agree… it is hard to tell what OMFG!! means :) i took it to represent the same reaction i had.

step 1: WHAT?? IS THIS FOR REAL?

step 2: why so silly adam?

step 3: well adam sure does look gorgeous (add purple and gold eyeshadow to shopping list)

step 4: ok, i got what youre doing here… this is standard “yes I AM ridiculous”

step 5: love it. love the craziness. love the retro look. love that in one picture he can look like a fine ass man/woman and still have the biggest damn balls ever.

step 6: adam tweets – campy confirmation. proceed to love him more.

  • Mary102

Can’t we just agree to disagree on the cover?

    Well said.

LOL! And I think Adam couldn’t agree more with this kind of attitude! He wants people talking about it! If it was ignored or evoked no response, that would have been a much bigger failure, imo. This is the guy who wants flaming headdresses and sang RoF because he didn’t give an eff, and wore boas proudly on the AI tour stage all summer. He is not about to shy away from controversy. And though I may not agree or love everything he does, I can never deny that I am always entranced with the twists and turns, the surprises, the mysteries, everything about him.

  • suebrody

But what if you have never heard of Adam and/or his music? (and yes, there are plenty of folks who haven’t yet) Do you think the CD cover will help or hurt?

I would wager to say that most artists don’t intentionally want people to think their first CD cover is ridiculous, therefore most folks who are new to Adam probably will not ‘get’ it either.

I just don’t think it’s going to matter. I think most ppl download their music (maybe I’m wrong about this?), so album covers are not particularly relevant. And I still think that if people don’t *get * it (and they might not, and that’s fine–I get it and don’t particularly like it and don’t care anymore), then they haven’t taken a minute to listen to what’s inside. If you want safe, radio-friendly music, there are other Idols to choose from. I don’t think Adam thought his cover was ridiculous, nor did RCA/19, or they wouldn’t have put it out. They aren’t stupid; they want to make money. Adam has said he likes money. Some artists just make art for arts sake (but they have day jobs or spouses supporting them or trust funds). Adam did the “I’ll do it till something better comes along” gig with Wicked. He wants to make it big-time. If the cover prevents that, it would be unfortunate, but I truly don’t think it will. But honestly, I don’t buy in record stores anymore; I download everything now.

ETA: Interesting. Adam always polarizes and amazes. Others, not so much.

  • TXArchitect

The easiest way to buy anything incognito at a store is to get all dressed up and look really nice.

  • wenhk

I don’t like the cover too, and I think the artwork does not do well to express the concept. But from the beginning, I did not expect to see a normal cover with a good-looking Adam on it. It is just Adam, who always goes along with his controversial choices ‘“ either good or bad. The cover will not stop me from buying the CD though, if I like the music. I like his voice and singing, and I want a CD with better audio quality.

  • NewFan

I’m just looking forward to the music. It would be nice to get a double album. I know it won’t happen but it sounds like some really great songs will be left on the cutting room floor so to speak. That’s a shame.

And, perhaps it’s because of the headache that I woke up with but … it would also be so nice if the din from the album cover thread didn’t keep drowning out the the talk about music that’s going on over here. It seems to be diminishing now … but still … please be gone.

Actually, I think the album cover din has helped me to figure something out. Criticize Adam and you could get piled on. Criticize someone who is critical of Adam and you will get piled on. Enjoy something of Adam’s when other people don’t and you may get called an overly invested fan. Enjoy something of Adam’s when most other people don’t and you will get called an irrational, reflexive, overly invested fan or even ‘gasp’ a Glambert.

I’m really excited about the MUSE thing … and the Pink thing and the Adam originals and … and … and

But when we do get music, I’m not going to try to read a whole long thread from beginning to end. Never again. Migraines.

  • Truthiness

FHS you said it better than I could and yes, all of that and exactly that.

The tweets made me sad. He never wants to let us down. And he wanted all those who love him delighted and celebrating this big moment with him. Some of us still love him and celebrate him. Just not this particular cover.

Adam is too smart to only want people who will say ‘yes’ and ‘love it’ every time he wants to light his hair on fire

Adam needs people to tell him when not to put his hair on fire, and what worries me is that he didn’t have people around him telling him that this cover was putting his hair on fire. Of course he wasn’t going to trust Twitter reaction. After all the weird stuff he gets and all the crap he got over stupid things like not being a barricades. But his telling people they ‘didn’t get it,’ was silly. Telling people it’s okay if they didn’t like it, and hey at least it got them discussing it,’ fine. But telling people they don’t get it is dismissive. And I hope he isn’t dismissing all of his fans when they’re not happy with him. No, he can’t please everyone all the time, nor should he try.

But there is such a thing as people, even fans, having a valid negative response to something you’ve done and artists should be open to that too. I know it’s a fine act to pull, wanting to follow your vision and not caring if it’s popular with the majority of people vs. people telling you they get your vision, but your execution needs work. Like don’t like the hair on fire, have a big flaming staff instead.

  • anthrogeek

alaadam: Relieved and excited that the cover has actually created enough buzz that peeps are buying the CD again. I guess the cover-gate made peeps realize he has a CD coming and you can pre-order.

And this is ultimately all that matters. It’s gotten enough buzz that I saw a story about Adam, who was shown singing WLL, and his new album cover last night on the LOCAL news with a mention that pre-orders were being taken; hence, Q3′s stats about orders being UP. Look how many links have been posted in this thread and others about online polls, discussions, and essays across the Internet – did Kris or Alison’s cover get that much notice? People are paying attention in droves to everything Adam does! Isn’t that the goal, to sell CDs?

The cover is what it is, so now I just want to hear some MUSIC! I have no idea when/where track lists get published, but BRING IT ON!

  • Ladyguard

After reading all the negativity on the internet about Adam in the last week, I don’t know if he will be a success or not. One thing I do know that whatever happens to Adam he will be able to stand up and proudly declare “I DID MY WAY’. Adam I am with you all the way, no matter what happens.

  • saga

But there is such a thing as people, even fans, having a valid negative response to something you’ve done and artists should be open to that too.

I also think FHS expressed how I feel BUT it’s not a decision concering world peace, it’s an album cover. I am thinking from what FHS said and from what the cover artist expressed in her blog (something about fighting for the artist blah blah) that Adam had to fight for this cover and that RCA weren’t too sure about it. But hey, if you never take a chance nothing exciting happens. Sometimes you fail and sometimes you win.

Were you in the original thread for this cover on ontd_ai? It wasn’t pretty and even Adam fans were WTAF, and indeed the majority opinion in the poll was ‘What the fuck is this?’ followed by ‘It’s so Adam.’ . IDF seemed to hate it last time I was there, most of them didn’t like it.

I’ve read there today and most love it or seem fine with it now. The people who didn’t like it either reevaluated it or don’t seem to mind as much since Adam tweeted.

Polls at both MSNBC and NY Daily News have the majority of people liking it.

Why shouldn’t Adam explain the cover? It appears to have been his concept based on Fuko’s blogs (my Japanese isn’t very good (LOL!) so I may be misinterpreting what she wrote but she credits Adam for the concept.

And isn’t this what all cultural “change agents” need to do? Make you rethink about your opinions, re-evalute them, and maybe make you want to change. And like it or not, Adam has become a change agent. And the discussion this album has spawned about male, female, gay, straight roles and imagery is at least interesting.

I am not saying that everyone should or will love this cover — but it is just a CD cover. As for the fan you mentioned maybe she could try putting a paper bag over her head while she’s in the store.

Bestest’ ¦.and this really needs to be done by all the macho guys out there because I must have read a 100 times that no man in their friggin right mind would think to buy this album based on the cover and would be totally embarrassed to do so.

I think we are underestimating men in general. Give them some credit, please– especially the music lovers out there!

I really think most men choose their music based on what they like and what’s good– not on the cover art of the cd. A lot of men LIKE edginess and are not put off by androgyny, rather they enjoy the “cool” factor of an “out there” cover.

To stereotype men as being too narrow-minded to “get” an artist or to buy a cd because it might make them look gay is– well– insulting to men.

And Tess, I am actually agreeing with you– I get your tongue-in-cheek…

Let me rephrase here: Adam felt the need to explain his vision and then follow it up with a remark akin to ‘well the kewl kids get, and if you don’t? Oh well!’

Hmmm…I always felt that Adam channeled more with the “un-kewl’ crowd than the “kewl” one. I didn’t take it the way you did at all, maybe because I’m a fan, maybe because I did like the cover or maybe it’s all in personal history or biases. Just like we process everything.

What was he supposed to say, MJ?? Was he supposed to try to pound it into everyone’s head that it was the best thing or the worst thing ever, like some people on this blog like to do, or he could do what he did and just say, “oh well” and move on. There was no “right” thing to say in this situation that would make people happy or validate their feelings. But based on the tweets he AND his friends were getting that were ugly and hate-filled, I think he needed to address it in some way.

IA. I’m one of those Adam fans who disliked the cover at first glance. I don’t know why I suddenly love it (maybe I’m easy :) )

I also enjoyed the transition from disliking to loving it. It’s like being pushed out of comfort zone and suddenly find something I’ve never known tha I will enjoy. It also broke the perceived Adam I had in my head, and replaced it with maybe another perceived Adam, but this one has one more layer and I hope closer to the real Adam.

Right on, Q3, and to add to this, I do think people are allowed to change their minds based on what they know the artist intended.

It’s not sheep mentality, it is the ability to open up and look at things from a different perspective. That’s a good thing.

And to add to this, after having lived and worked with artists for many years, I think people are allowed to understand the artist’s concept, open their minds to see what they were trying to do and be allowed to say, ‘nice try, but in my humble opinion, you did not accomplish your vision.’

Nobody is perfect, no one gets it right everytime. Even Adam.

Doesn’t mean I won’t support him, doesn’t mean I will not love his next experiment. But, as you said, it isn’t sheep mentality. I don’t think any real artist would want anyone following him/her blindly. That is not creativity nor true expression.

Ok, don’t remember the exact quote or when he said it but he did say something to the effect of hoping to give us what we want and even a few things we didn’t know we wanted. Sounds like the cover could fit into the latter category with some people. The ones that didn’t like it or didn’t know if they liked it on first look but now do.

But, I wish his remark was akin to “the kewl kids got it” because I worship the ground that he walks on, I hang on his every word, I would love to breathe the same air that he does, I must know his every movement … and I’ve never actually been one of the kewl kids.

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE how Adam blows my mind into a million pieces and forces me to put the pieces back together again after some intense disbelief, shock, and WTF flailing.

It’s like when you go in for a vision test and they put those glasses up to your eyes, and you can’t see a thing at first, and then the doctor starts adjusting the lenses until voila you can see perfectly!

It feels soooo good to get your mind blown and perspective altered.

I love people who do that (and there aren’t many).

I just love this guy! He is so much fun.

    Keep at it Adam!!

  • Teri63

Yay for Adam!!! He’s so much fun! I loved the cover from the get-go, but I certainly could understand where others were coming from–mostly just concern, I think, that he would be a laughing stock with the general non-Idol-fanatic public. I think you kind of have to know him to get him, and we’re all hoping others will give him a chance so they can hear the astounding things we do and find out what a really cool, special person he seems to be. I’m just so glad that he reached out to shed a little light on things. The Adam ride has been a bumpy one since RoF, but one of the most exciting rides I’ve been on as a fan. There have been SO MANY things he’s done that I’ve had to step back and take a look at it from his more artistic perspective before I “got it.” He eventually makes me “get it” every time, though. I just can’t wait to hear him sing again with some new music… SOON!

Clearly he does. He’s always said he wants to be a role model for kids who feel like they’re different or don’t quite fit in. I doubt he ever considered himself to be one of the “kewl” kids.

I have to agree with zorana84. Some comments on twitter yesterday and today were just hateful and ignorant, not a large amount, but the ones that there were, were brutal.

Some of the comments tweeted and posted online last night on unmoderated sites were horrific (not on this site) — there is no other word for them. And these hate comments had nothing to do with graphic design of a CD cover — they were entirely about hating gays. And BTW — these comments didn’t just come from the US — a lot of the Twitter IDs for the really horrible comments were from the UK. There is no way to deny that this is an issue.

  • Teri63

nteresting. Adam seems a bit of a lightning rod right now. Don’t know if ultimately that’s good or bad. Or what it says about Adam. Or the times. Or people. It is interesting though.

    Music, please? :

Here’s the key! I hope he really does come out with something SOONER than later because, whether people love or hate the cover, the fact is, he has everyone’s attention. That’s what I think is SOOOOOOOO ingenious about this album cover. Whether you love it or hate it, your eyes are wide open and curious about what’s to come.

  • adamland

I always thought Adam was one of unkewl kids and has never changed. Of course YMMV

  • lizziegs

the cover doesn’t seem to have hurt sales any. in fact the opposite….pretty much across the board pre-order increases on the charts here and overseas since Monday.
Oh, and my 15 year old daughter already has it as a screen saver.

  • CindyM

Ryan talked about the CD cover on his show today. Talked about Adam’s tweets, talked about the 80′s feel. Laughed a bit about the hand placement. His co-host, I don’t know her name, finished the conversation with “It’s beautiful. Adam Lambert is beautiful.”. Ryan then said something like, well, I have no where else to go with this. LOL. Pretty funny.

  • erinnthered

It really does seem that Adam in lacking in self awareness. He doesn’t seem to understand the general public’s image of him at all.

Campy? I think Adam needs to review his understanding of the concept. This is bad camp, and nothing is worse than bad camp.

  • clearone

I’ve read there today and most love it or seem fine with it now. The people who didn’t like it either reevaluated it or don’t seem to mind as much since Adam tweeted.

Adam’s tweet didn’t change my mind, I still don’t like it but I understand more where he was coming from….and as MJ said, I think it was poorly executed.

  • jms

MJ: I also don’t view Adam as an artist who is ahead of the curve, but as always, your mileage may vary.

He’s not. But unfortunately, the US itself has fallen so far behind the curve and has turned much more conservative in the last couple of decades that ground has to be broken all over again. So many people are reacting as if the 1970′s never happened that I’ve been sitting here pretty much stunned. My first reaction (and it still is my reaction) to the cover is that it’s pretty but a bit boring. It needs more bling and a better pose (& or background) to do the theme right.

But after seeing everyone’s reaction, I’m pretty sure that people aren’t ready for the cover to go further. Adam being feminine seems to have turned enough people perceptions of him upside down that he would have alienated too many of them if he’d taken it further. If a different artist had done this, those same people would likely have never seen the cover and it would have gotten little to no attention. But since he was on American Idol, he’s introducing an audience that is unused to having their perceptions played with like this to something that is new to them.

It’s a bit like the reaction after his ROF performance. There was nothing really out there about that performance. What made it a big deal was the audience it was being performed for. It took people a bit of time to adjust to it. Some grew to like it. Some didn’t. I suspect that the ones that ended up liking ROF will also end up not hating and possibly liking this. Even if they are disappointed that he didn’t give them the vision they wanted, they’ll stay on the train to see if they like what’s next.

  • sidewalkstory

But unfortunately, the US itself has fallen so far behind the curve and has turned much more conservative in the last couple of decades that ground has to be broken all over again.

I think this all the time. It’s almost as if we wasted our time in the 60′s.

I agree with this also.. I was hoping for it to be more fantasy actually.. but it still makes no difference to me really.. now the music such as the muse song mentioned above has my total interest!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Adam needs people to tell him when not to put his hair on fire, and what worries me is that he didn’t have people around him telling him that this cover was putting his hair on fire

Truthiness! Do you really think Adam had the only and final say regarding this cover? Really?? I’m sure he had input, but if RCA did not want that cover, it wouldn’t be there.

As for Adam being open to taking advise from fans, which fans would that be? The ones who are right? What if takes advise from the ones who are wrong? I mean, come on. We’re bordering on ridiculousness, now. This is ADAM’S life, ADAM’S career, ADAM’S dream, ADAM’S future. Not some Joe Blow from Bumfuck, Iowa who thinks he/she knows what’s best for him. If he screws up, it’s on him because he OWNS this – not us.

So, is that what all those horrible tweets to Adam, Sony, 19, and RCA were about last night? A group of his fans actually thought if they were obnoxious enough and pestered enough, someone would pull the cover? Sheesh. Tell me that’s not so.

  • zzatrms

Soaked is amazing, and beautiful. That is not a throw-away song! And this is certainly going to be a multi-genre album.

OMG …. this is simply beautiful. I can’t wait for Adam to sing it.

  • bridgeymah

are we really still talking about a photograph and some typography in a square format… please say it isn’t so.

  • Truthiness

So, is that what all those horrible tweets to Adam, Sony, 19, and RCA were about last night? A group of his fans actually thought if they were obnoxious enough and pestered enough, someone would pull the cover? Sheesh. Tell me that’s not so.

I wouldn’t know or care if that’s what they were doing. And that wasn’t what I was saying at all. My point being, as someone else here said, that while an artist has to have a vision, it’s not wrong or not being artistic, to be open to what others think of you. And as I said, it’s hard to know when fans are trying to tell you that, versus when they aren’t just getting it, and I don’t expect him to listen to Twitter at this point at all, given how stupid people have been about other things.

But the point remains of the value of listening to others. Artists do this as well. My mom used to ask me what I thought of her art. She might have decided not to go with my views, but she didn’t dismiss them, because she knew I respected her and her talent and all I wanted was for her to sell and do well. I would even put myself outside my own personal tastes sometimes to do so. Like ‘here is my personal taste, but I can see what you were trying to do here and within what you’re trying to achieve, I can see it as being successful. Or ‘okay, I can see what you’re trying to go for, even if it’s not my taste, but don’t you think that X might be improved if you did this…?’

So yes, sometimes while the madding crowd shouldn’t be wholly listened to, or even well meaning fans, that there is still value in feedback, and yes, even fan feedback. Though fan feedback is tricky, I grant you, on any number of levels. But it’s not completely without value, even just in terms of wanting to do well in the industry to stay in the industry doing well.

  • Squirrely

Adam has acknowledged that it’s as much about business as it is about art so I have every reason to believe that he’s taken ALL factors into consideration when working WITH his label on this album.

IMO the opinion of the fans should NEVER play a role in the artistic direction of the artist because then it’s not about their vision and feeding their own creative needs it’s about feeding the fandom. and then it becomes a question of where do you draw the line? first the album cover then then they could decide they want him to change the way he dresses or how he does his hair and then it could progress to them wanting to have an opinion on who he dates.

As someone said, it is adam’s career, it’s his dream. Like Kelly Clarkson with My December, sometimes an artist just has to be willing to put up or shut up and fly or fall on their own vision. It’s gutsy as hell to do it right out of the gate but that’s who Adam is.

  • TXArchitect

At least the days of the “artist/actor/musician” being held prisoner in a virtual vacumn by their possee of “yes men” is OVER.

Think of how many “stars” have been allowed to self-destruct over the years simply because they were out-of-touch with any outside influences, and those “close” to them played them for the milk cows they were.

Twitter, blogs, email may be harsh and impersonal, but they DO provide an unfiltered conduit … good news for those with stong sense-of-self / bad for those who are afraid or easily swayed.

  • cher
  • Lynne

But his telling people they ‘didn’t get it,’ was silly. Telling people it’s okay if they didn’t like it, and hey at least it got them discussing it,’ fine. But telling people they don’t get it is dismissive”

I liked the cover right away, and maybe that is partly why I didn’ t take this comment that way at all. I feel like he thanked people who got it (got his vision of it, not just understood his vision, but connected with it) and said “oh well” about people who didn’t (connect with his vision of it.) Not everybody who gets his idea (intellectually) will get (connect) with the way it plays out in the cover. I don’t think he meant to be dismissive.

Funny, just last night I was having a discussion with my son about Descartes and his philosophy of individualism in art. Basically, the idea is that you don’t allow the community to have any influence on your artistic vision because then the integrity of your vision will be compromised and its creation will be fragmented.

I think that anyone who really is to create something unique artistically has to stay true to his own vision. Yes, you listen to feedback, and when it feels right to you, you make changes, but when it doesn’t, you ignore it.

I bet Adam has listened to feedback, but ultimately, he has to create the art that feels right at his own center, the art he really loves and about which he has conviction. True conviction comes across in the expression of art. It makes what you do have heart and integrity. If you try to do something other people like that you don’t feel, your art will lose its power.

If you try to please a majority, even a majority of fans, you run the risk of watering down your own ideas. That may bring you some commercial success, but it will never make you great.

One of the things I admire and find exciting about Adam is that he has the courage and drive to put his own vision out there and take risks. Will everyone like everything he does? No. That has been apparent already. Will I always like what he does? No. Will I sometimes come around to appreciate it after I digest it and it sits with me a while? Probably.

Will what he does bring him greatness? Time will tell, but the fact that he has strong ideas, and isn’t afraid to go fully out with them, gives him a real chance. That is what brought ROF to AI. That is what, like it or not, gave us his album cover. Adam knows what he likes, and he goes for that.

That is why I find him compelling and why I look forward to following what he does in the future. There are more albums to come and more projects to undertake; each will represent some new and changing vision that he is playing out. Each will be surprising. He will keep reinventing himself because he is that kind of artist and because that is what he wants to do. That is what I like about Adam. He is one of the few who I hope never to find boring, and who I believe will never settle for just being safe.

  • http://www.f3properties.com Animated

Well seems like some people are still not over the album cover yet.
And I am super excited about the Muse song. Talking about the Muse.
I have their actual CD ,The Resistance. And my guy saw the CD cover lying around and asked – “Are Chemistry text books in CD now ? Are these for the kids ?” yeah, he thought the music CD was a text book. See, covers are not always all that great. And it is even Muse.
So Adam’s album cover – another Ring of Fire moment. Love it or hate it.
It gets to you. I love thinking how heads are going to pop over it.

  • Maria22

But, I wish his remark was akin to ‘the kewl kids got it’ because I worship the ground that he walks on, I hang on his every word, I would love to breathe the same air that he does, I must know his every movement ‘ ¦ and I’ve never actually been one of the kewl kids.

Me too, and if it makes you feel better neither has Adam :)

MJ, the only question I have about this thread is how it turned from a discussion of Adam’s music to a rehashing of the cover. Usually the threads get separated, right ? Maybe not…
Actually I think I just answered my own question, the topic is the album, so music, cover, it’s all part of it.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Maria, I really do think the Covergate discussion finally withered on the vine once Adam tweeted the name of his single and once we got to hear Soaked. I think the posts are just screwed up and running in any which order. Either that, or I’m having some sort of mini-stroke! :)

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Uh….nevermind about my last post. Apparently, I’m not having a stroke and posts are not running in random order. There are so many Adam threads up, tonight, I stumbled into the wrong one. OMG. I’m criminally insane!

  • nora

I’ve been trying to figure out what bothers me about Adam’s album cover. I think this is it: He has that sexy gaze that we all love, but with all that femininity, it’s just confusing. But not in a provocative, Adam-type way. The composition is so awkward, which is also very unlike Adam. Campy can be fun, but something is just so odd about this. I think he’ll look back and regret it. I still love him, though.

  • ptslittlecomment

I suspect that the ones that ended up liking ROF will also end up not hating and possibly liking this. Even if they are disappointed that he didn’t give them the vision they wanted, they’ll stay on the train to see if they like what’s next.

Loved ROF from the moment I heard it. Disappointed in cover from the moment I saw it. Don’t think either will change.

Will stay around to check out the music.

  • sma11ie

I’m pretty sure this song is not the Pink song and will sound nothing like this Pink song, but am I the only one who keeps humming the refrain from U and Ur Hand whenever I type “For Your Entertainment”?

    I love this song:

I’m not here for your entertainment
You don’t really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life
    Cause you know it’s over
    Before it began
Keep your drink just give me the money
It’s just you and your hand tonight

Anyway, very random, sorry. Midterm season, procrastination by hanging out MJ’s is a major problem for me =P.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

I said yesterday I liked the cover, but which it had a bid more edge. I still like the cover today, and I hope the liner notes/art work tell more of the story.

I think some people may be disappointed in the cover because they had their own vision of what Adam’s cover should be in their mind. So I think unless the album cover matched that personal vision, they were going to be disappointed.

I never had a personal vision of what Adam’s cover would look like, so I went into it pretty open. But now that I have seen it, if I could tweek it at all, I would I like less blue but that’s because I’m a warm colored person. :) And although I like Adam’s look, I still would like something else in the shot…maybe him holding a planet in his hand. That would fit in nicely with “For Your Entertainment.” The world is his oyster and there to entertain him. Or he is here to entertain the world.

  • gabilan

undercooked, I wanted something more from the cover too. It just seemed predictable (for Adam anyway) and a little boring to me. I don’t hate it, it’s pretty enough and I do like the colors, but it’s missing something for me.

I think your Adamhead floating in space holding a planet idea is great! It would add the sense of life and energy that is such an important part of Adam’s attractiveness as an artist.

Ah, I wish I had photoshop skills or I’d whip up my own version.

  • NewFan

I see we’re discussing the album cover again.

  • justjude

This version of Muses’ “Soaked” sounds really nice. Could this be “the one restrained ballad”, that Adam has mentioned previously??
I know it is not, But the singer sounds a little like Rufus??
So, unless they have switched songs this is not the debut single as he said it was to be “What Do You Want From me”…. The Pink/Max Martin
    song?
Yeah!! Getting to be a loooong wait. Uh,Huh!!!!

  • hypertwink

Yup, but it’s Adam’s fault, actually since he tweeted about it.

  • sr4mjc

  • glamatheart

Sorry if this was already posted but Aimee Mayo’s track, Sleep Walker, made the album! I’m happy for her.

I absolutely agree with you here. And I believe Adam does as well, at least based on his interviews where he talked about trying to balance the artistic and business sides of himself and how he decided to switch it up after the reaction he got to ROF.

What I don’t understand are the comments of some saying he’s being wholly dismissive of fan reactions. Yeah, maybe he’s defending himself on twitter, but based on past practice he’s no doubt processing these reactions as well. The album cover won’t change, but for all we know he may be rethinking his original concepts for his AMA performance and wondering if the public is ready for full-on androgynous Adam which, because he can look so pretty at times, may read more feminine and less androgynous to some.

And if he did decide to retool his performance, that wouldn’t be compromising his artistic vision, imo. More like a slower rollout.
