Here’s Adam Lambert singing “A Change is Gonna Come” at the Zodiac Show in Hollywood, 2004.

An Idol staple that’s been covered by the likes of Syesha Mercado and Taylor Hicks, part of me would kill to see Adam bust out with this Top 12 week, with the over-singing and the glam getup intact.

But then, the other part of me wants Adam to stick around on my TV for a few weeks, at least.

  • katyness

    holy moly.

    just… lol.

  • brownstarz

Yes! You did it MJ! I’m sooo happy you posted that! Now everyone can see Adam in his glory! That is the Adam I want to see!

    dramatic schmatic….more like FREAKING INCREDIBLE!!!!

That is definitely what Adam would say is love it or hate it.

    AND I LOVED IT!

No one can deny he sang the hell out of that song and made it his own and was pitch perfect. It may be too “edgy” for Idol fans, I agree. But I think after 8 seasons, America should be ready for someone like Adam. Change Is Gonna Come indeed!

    TEAM ADAM ALL THE WAY!!!!

  • CathyMK

Love it, as I said on the other thread!

The thing I find interesting is that VFTW, Perez Hilton, TMZ, or some other gossip outfit, hasn’t picked up on all of these videos that are all over Youtube. You’d think that would be a story they’d run with. Or maybe, since Adam’s not trying to hide who he is (even if he’s not emphasizing it), it’s not that big a story?

  • Niall

Oh my gosh. I loved it. I don’t expect him to go all out like that on AI, but if he does I hope he waits at least until he makes the tour because he’d be voted off for sure.

  • snuffles

VFTW has posted those videos. But people like Perez Hilton and TMZ tend to pounce only when it looks like they’re exposing a big secret (like if they thought Adam was hiding in the closet). Since, clearly he isn’t, it pretty much ruins all the fun for them. :o p

  • Jolene

I just think they’re all waiting for the competition to get further along. It’ll simply have greater impact when Adam’s Top 3 than now.

  • cay

This is my favorites video by far:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sqG43VZY2M&feature=related

I think he almost lost himself towards the end and thought he was doing a performance that he’s no doubt done in West Hollywood. You can see Randy cracking up. And Adam trying to catch himself.

  • bjames

    ack…

  • cay

Well, I want him to stick around too. BUT I hope he checks out dialidol, and if he’s falling in numbers and gonna go, PLEASE, please, please Adam go out this way!!!

He might as well. Once the girls stop fighting in the youtube comments over whether he’s gay or not, and they’ll leave him for Kris, Adam might as well be what he’s trying to be. The first Gay Poprock Queen. He’s be such a hit in Europe. Hope America is ready for him. I am.

  • brownstarz

That video was also added on you tube by the Zodiac Show two days ago, even though Adam performed it in 2004. Hmm…I wonder if people who know Adam wants the world to slowly find out more and more about his performance skills. Because definitely this video just took what I loved about him to a whole new level.

“The first Gay Poprock Queen. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s be such a hit in Europe. Hope America is ready for him. I am.”

I agree with you, Cay. I think Adam would be A HUGE HIT in Europe. Freddie was a god in Europe and right now Mika has an enormous European following. Their American following…not as big.

  • Layla

You go my little glam drama queen…you just GO with your nice package- which he sure doesn’t mind showing off!

Am lovin’ me some Adam…hope he has a chance to shake things up before he gets voted off once he has totally freaked out the red staes, bible belt, much of the south and assorted others.

  • Tess

I just think theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re all waiting for the competition to get further along. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll simply have greater impact when Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Top 3 than now.

Why would it have any impact at all? Adam isn’t hiding who he is, hasn’t downplayed his “freak” flag during the competition, tells it like it is: “black hair dye and a straight iron”. I’m sorry, but this is 2009 and if anyone is still offended at entertainers’ personal choices concerning their sexuality, or their wardrobe, or the make-up they wear, they are really living in the dark ages. I’m old and I thought the video was entertaining and that the look was wonderfully androgenous and captivating.

I find it wonderfully refreshing that there was flack concerning one contestants over-use of his backstory (and he is religious and conservative and very middle america) and hardly any towards a guy that admits to his “differences” which aren’t considered the popular norm.

I’m liking Adam, more and more, and I really hope he goes very far on AI. I think the competition really needs him to stay current and fresh.

  • brownstarz

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sorry, but this is 2009 and if anyone is still offended at entertainersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ personal choices concerning their sexuality, or their wardrobe, or the make-up they wear, they are really living in the dark ages.

Tess, I wanna believe in what you say really bad. I’m just afraid that when push comes to shove in the voting, Adam’s androgeny and flamboyance will not be accepted by the Idol viewers. I apologize for getting political, but I think there are still alot of ignorant people in the U.S. when it comes to “gay music”. It’s the reason brilliant artists like Ani Difranco or Rufus Wainwright aren’t mainstream hits. But hey, I would loved to be proven wrong.

  • Natasha

I think he almost lost himself towards the end and thought he was doing a performance that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no doubt done in West Hollywood. You can see Randy cracking up. And Adam trying to catch himself.

I think this is part of the fun with Adam – that he’ll get so into it he’ll forget where he is and do something wild. If it ever happens I hope whoever has their finger on the “censor” button is out to lunch.

As for the newest video, to paraphrase Bill Murray in Ghostbusters if he ever did that on Idol it would probably result in “Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!” Lol.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m liking Adam, more and more, and I really hope he goes very far on AI. I think the competition really needs him to stay current and fresh.

    I agree.

  • justshootme

Sigh. Thanks Jeebus for Adam Lambert.

And I’m pretty sure that the reason Ani or Rufus aren’t huge mainstream artists is that their style isn’t hugely mainstream. Sexual preferences aside. And I’m a fan.

  • Lexus

I loved Adam’s Satisfaction on night one, but thought he was even better closing out the results show. I can’t believe the conversation this guy has generated and the season hasn’t even really started yet. If he’s this incredible now………. I wonder if Adam is who Simon was speaking of when he said he was 100% sure a guy is going to win it this year. I can’t imagine it isn’t. IMO, he’s already the sure bet! Is he even beatable?

  • snuffles

IMO, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s already the sure bet! Is he even beatable?

At the present moment, the only one standing in his way is Gokey. But let’s see how the other contestants do.

  • Jolene

Why would it have any impact at all? Adam isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hiding who he is, hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t downplayed his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“freakà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ flag during the competition, tells it like it is

I like Adam probably more than any other contestant this season (not that that’s saying alot…), but I don’t think the image he portrays on Idol and what you see in these videos is quite the same thing. I have no problem with any of it either way, but do I think some of the Idol viewership could have a problem? Yes, I do. I’d love to think most people are open-minded and free of prejudice, but I don’t.
And we all know the media can twist non-issues and make them into a tempest in a teacup. To use a comfy example, last season David Cook had two “gates” surrounding complete non-issues – one, that he covered covers (like many other contestants who got no grief about it) and two, that he had an album for sale on Amazon.com (like many other contestants, where their’s continued to sell long after his was taken off). David Archuleta had the whole stagedad story to contend with.
My point is – frontrunners get put in the spotlight and controversies are spun around them because the public cares and the stories sell. As Adam becomes a major frontrunner, I have no doubt there will be controversy, just like there already is around Danny.
So if nothing got picked up yet, I expect it to happen soon enough. That’s just the way this media game is played, IMHO. If it won’t be these videos, it’ll be something else.

  • soccerboi

He is beatable? Yes, I thought Archie was unbeatable last year and he was the one who everyone, I mean everyone was talking about. I think Adam is the most talented and the best performer by far…but you never know…nothing is a sure thing. Except that he will get a recording contract out of all of this…that IS a sure thing.

  • movin2thabeet

I think the only thing standing in Adam’s way is the Idol-voting public, not Danny Gokey. As Adam referenced himself, he’s a love-it or hate-it kind of performer. And from comments I’ve seen around the blogosphere, it seems to be an even match. I think it’s as much his OTT style of singing as it is his stage act and his physical appearance. It will be interesting to see the reaction when he tones it down, although I’m not sure he knows how to do subtle. However it goes, it promses to be a wild ride.

  • yf7184

I am still 100 % for ANOOP, but I am starting to like Adam a lot! He is very entertaining to watch, even when he “tones down” for the AI audience. I think his voice may get to be as good as freddie mercury with age and perhaps a little bit of training. I’d love to watch Adam-Anoop final with the OTT theatrical grandeur vs. smoothsexy subtle delivery. *drools with anticipation*

  • t2

I swear every time I hear Adam, I can’t help but think of Sam Harris (except Sam Harris does listen to Broadway tunes on his iPod

and has already sung with Liza Minelli

I love Sam Harris and I love Adam Lambert — give me a TRUE diva any day

  • undercooked

I think he probably wlil tone it down, because, if I’m not wrong, don’t we start with the mentors during the top 12? Or maybe it’s the top 10. I’m hoping if they do get someone like Bowie (in my dreams!) or McCartney (also in my dreams) he will actually listen to their advice. Axle Rose is probably available, but no hint of a new album or reunion, so chances not so good. I also heard Robert Smith is coming out with a new album. Don’t know if he would consider going on idol to promote it, via mentoring. The Cure would be good too. Please, no Britney. Madonna, yes, as I do, think she would give him some sage advice.

As far as themes, I think country week might suit him just fine. He has so many songs he has probably performed over the years, that it will be good if he has to sing one he’s never done, one that he has no stage show to go with.

I think for Adam the mentors will be a blessing in disguise.

  • ladymadonna

I still can’t quite figure out what TPTB’s plans are for Adam. He’s obviously hella talented, but I have a hard time imagining how they’re planning to market him. Maybe I’m underestimating the vision of the Idol producers, but I doubt they are twitterpated by the thought of breaking the next Mika, or even the next Freddie Mercury.

If he is TCO though, I do have to wonder if they let the whole Tatiana/Normund freakshow get as far as it did simply to make Adam’s brand of flamboyance feel like a welcome relief to America. I’m not sure if I love him or hate him yet, but the possibility that he could break out something completely audacious in that Fantasia “Bore me (Yawn)” kind of way is the only thing keeping the Idol season pass set on my Tivo.

  • cay

Ha. Mentors will be a blessing in disguise. The guy is really super talented. I’d love to see what mentors pull out of him. He might not only surprise us, but even himself.

I think he’s been such a performer that it will be hard for him to really do that vulnerable “artist” performance. But, as much as I like the wild side, I am hopeful we’ll get to hear something about what’s really inside. (in one of his bar shows he’s talking to the audience and he mentions being really lonely or something about hard to find love)

I hope someone can pull it out of him. Someone could make a real, credible recording artist out of him. I want one stripped and bare performance. (not literally !!)

  • abbysee

I love Adam Lambert. I love the way he looks. I love the way he sings. I love that he is a scenery chewing, pentecostal church choir, fire and brimstone kinda singer. Watching Adam is pure bliss.

I don’t know if America is ready for him, but I damn well will vote for anyone else if it’s Danny Gokey and anyone else on finale night.

It’s funny about girls possibly dumping him because he’s gay. I guess I am just weird, I am straight but I get girl crushes on girls, like Carly, and certainly love Adam in the same way. Wow, imagine a duet with those two. Anyway, sexual orientation should never enter into whether you like someone’s singing. I don’t ask if I want to do someone before I buy a cd, or concert tickets, only if they are entertaining enough.

Frankly I am glad he did Satisfaction last week because that is who he is, and it’s better to get it out there now. Perez won’t out him because he’s not hiding in a closet, while pandering to the fundies.

  • mahrikka

Adam is a breath of fresh air for Idol. Art is not static, and one of the the artists Adam most admires is the ever-changing Bowie. Adam will evolve and change and evolve and change again. I don’t think this is “theatrical” or “phony” or “robotic” or “an act” or any of the other more negative labels that have been bestowed on Adam so far but rather the signs of a true artist. I love this and am so excited. I really hope Adam is rewarded for this. I can’t wait to see a live show!

abbysee, I would love to hear a Carly and Adam duet! :) I was thinking about that when she and Michael were singing the other night.

  • SparklesATL

I’ve heard Adam is heading right for RuPaul’s Drag Race after his stint on AI.

Like others before him, I’m sure he’ll end up on Broadway.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qo0perOfl7c&feature=related

  • poporange

Please power whom in charge I pray to then that they let Adam preform that song if he is a gonner anyways..A)To see the nice looking EMT using smelling salts on Simon B)Seeing Danny in the corner praying for Adam or his reaction priceless..

Kristen-does Danny sort of remind you of the lady from “Keeping Up Appearances”?

  • hypertwink

If Adam gets booted, I think he’s gonna be fine; at the very least, he’s gonna raise his profile in Broadway and get better roles.

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

AI5 had a Queen theme week with the surviving members mentoring the contestants. Prince was a surprise guest on the season finale that year, as George Michael was last season.

Dave Navarro, known for his trademark guyliner and black nail polish, hosted both seasons of the Rock Star series. It has been decades since Bowie was considered controversial.

I doubt that the AI audience will be shocked by androgyny. Tortured by oversinging? Maybe.

But Adam seems very canny about the show and what he needs to do to be a serious contender, as his press interviews this week indicate. He is going out of his way to play up his love for rock and distance himself from theater. He has said he will change up his sound and not be a chronic oversinger. He seems to understand that he needs to balance his musical preferences with the judges’ and the viewers’.

Just as long as he steers clear of that androgynous boy-loving Carmen Electra, he might make it to the finish line.

P.S. In response to a comment up-thread, how do we know that Danny Gokey or his church are conservative? His church serves an urban population that is racially mixed. Chris Sligh is a self-described Christian who endorsed Obama, as did many so-called young evangelicals.

  • Lexus

Cay, I had the same thought about the mentors. I can’t imagine what they could possibly teach Adam. He’s more entertaining to me than any mentor I’ve ever seen on the show.

I’d also love to see that “stripped and bare” performance that you speak of (literally though!). I wish the show weren’t so politically correct. The judges talk about the contestants being themselves and then they impose these ridiculous barriers and call them out for putting their own stamp on a performance. I think what intrigues me about Adam is the fact that he’s not like any other contestant we’ve seen on the show before. I want him to camp it up!

  • CathyMK

I still canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t quite figure out what TPTBà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plans are for Adam. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s obviously hella talented, but I have a hard time imagining how theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re planning to market him.

That’s what I keep wondering. I do think his sound is marketable, but it’s more alt than mainstream pop at this point. It’ll be interesting to see how versatile he actually is as the weeks go on. He could have a different style on AI from what we’ve seen of his stage work, then morph into a male Lady Gaga for his album. After all, David Archuleta auditioned with a John Mayer song, was known for inspirational ballads on AI, then came out with a pop album. Who knows what direction Adam is capable of going in. It’s going to be an exciting ride for sure though!

  • JudyOhio

Well, Adam certainly gives us the anticipation factor, that’s for sure. I’m not in his corner yet, but will say I find him to be the one I’m watching because I have NO idea what to expect from him, and that’s kinda exciting, lol. I sort of have the feeling he will keep it toned down since he is dealing with middle america. His parents look very sweet, almost Ossie and Harriet, and they look like they simply ADORE him. Adam has a very nice personality in interview. I will be very surprised if he comes out with the theatrical makeup and a performance such as the one posted here. We shall see! An-ti-ci-pay-ay-tion is….making us wait….it’s keeping us way-ay-ay-ay-ting…..la, la, laaaa…..

  • snuffles

Since we’re busting out the newly discovered Adam videos. Here he is singing David Foster’s “The Prayer” with Noa Dori.

For those of you looking for subteltly and nuance from Adam – here ya go!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu_dPnRzbRQ

  • ptslittlecomment

Snuffles, Adam’s performance in that Zodiac Show has been on the web for sometime (Crawl Thru the Fire) . MJ’s posted it before so I won’t add the link, but its in the video options on the site your link goes to.

  • snuffles

then morph into a male Lady Gaga for his album.

That’s the direction I’m envisioning him going in right now. And it would encompass the pop, rock and dance music he was talking about in those interviews.

  • Victoria

Hah. Glad this was finally posted somewhere where a lot of people can see it. I would love to see some people’s reaction to this who haven’t seen it before, haha.

then morph into a male Lady Gaga for his album.

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the direction Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m envisioning him going in right now. And it would encompass the pop, rock and dance music he was talking about in those interviews.

I wish he would do something a little different, something he can actually use that incredible voice of his for, like a rock thing. All that dance pop stuff is basically a singing computer. I mean, GaGa can sing but there’s still a lot of overproduction on her songs.

But if Adam does decide to go that route, PLEASE, I hope he at least wears pants, even though she doesn’t.

  • mahrikka

Wow, just wow, snuffles. Thanks for “The Prayer” video. I continue to be amazed.

  • JudyOhio

Thank you snuffles. That was simply beautiful. (New appreciation for Adam’s talent here.) Sitting here a bit amazed by that.

  • snuffles

I hope he at least wears pants,

As long as they’re TIGHT! LOL!

  • Natasha

    Here he is singing David Fosterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Prayerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ with Noa Dori.

At this point, I have to conclude he could probably sing anything. His voice is so good, it’s just…….ridiculous.

  • Lexus

Thanks, Snuffles, for the link to The Prayer. IMO, no one could ever eclipse Anthony Callea’s rendition, but Adam is a veryclose second! I’m so impressed with this guy’s talent. The weekly themes won’t be a problem for him. To say he’s versatile would be an understatement!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I doubt that the AI audience will be shocked by androgyny. Tortured by oversinging? Maybe.

My thoughts exactly. Androgyny has been mainstream in the music industry for decades. I realize that AI hasn’t had a contestant like Adam, and I don’t expect everyone to flove him, but I don’t think he’ll get much backlash. If he does, the peeps who love him will more than compensate for it.

Now, the video above didn’t impress me. I have no issues with androgyny at all. I know Adam can sing. But this type of performance bores me. I am not a fan of oversinging.

Adam could be my fave guy right now, but he’s not my fave contestant… yet. I’m looking forward to seeing how exactly he mixes it up and proves that he’s current. These vids aren’t showing how he could be current. I’m still keeping an open mind.

I love David Bowie, btw. I can’t think of a time when he sang like that. Ever. ;-)

  • JOJOSIE

If he’d sing something’ like’ that version of A Change is Gonna Come they’d have to get the costumers and makeup people that do the Zodiac shows to come to Idol, These shows have folks that only do that, but it figures due to the large cast and way out costumes and make-up. Seriously I don’t think that will ever happen. Thanks for The Prayer video as it just shows a whole other side of Adams talent. I really am an Adam fan, I think he’s probably the most talented singer thats been on Idol (like his style or not). He’s a star.

  • abbysee

I am floor by Adam’s rendition of The Prayer. It is a total departure from Satisfaction. It was beautifully done. I am about ready to announce Adam my favorite. Gotta see the final twelve, but he is definitely in my sights now.

I hope he at least wears pants,

As long as theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re TIGHT! LOL!

Yep, let’s hear it for Adam in something tight, be it demin or leather, don’t matta!

  • Victoria

I hope he at least wears pants,

As long as theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re TIGHT! LOL!

    Haha, nice.

Since we’re discussing “The Prayer”… I saw that awhile ago and… wow. No shouting, no oversinging… THAT is the Adam I want to see on Idol (although I prefer his current hairstyle to the one in the video, haha).

  • KrazeeK120

I doubt that the AI audience will be shocked by androgyny. Tortured by oversinging? Maybe.

Yes. I had to shut the video off halfway through. My ears were hurting.

However, IMO, the video that snuffles posted of “The Prayer” showcases Adam’s voice beautifully. If he sings more like that, I’ll love him. If he sings like he did in the video that MJ posted, I will not. I could care less what he wears.

  • undercooked

That particular Zodiac vid is nearly five years old. I know the Crawl Thru Fire is more current. He looks better in the newer one even though he’s still glammed up. No real point here, just an observation. I do love “The Prayer”. He really has gotten some impressive gigs.

  • maturin

I have no idea how this will all play out. It is interesting to think about for how long androgyny and sexual ambiguity have been a big part of musical culture, even when they weren’t a part of every day American life. People in the seventies grew up with Bowie and Queen, those of us in the eighties with the Cure, the Smiths, Boy George, and Prince, to name just a few eyeliner-wearing, tight trouser sporting trendsetters.

My older teen nieces are very into Tokio Hotel,* for whom the whole gay/straight thing is just . . . N/A

    * Yes, that’s a dude. His name is Bill.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Sigh. I tried to watch that “Prayer” vid, but only made it two minutes. Another snoozefest of a song. I don’t need that to show me that he can sing. It’s pretty clear. I need him to bring it each week, but not necessarily screaming. I love his interviews and am thinking he may deliver.

  • houstonrufus

I think Adam is a very, very talented guy. Who knows? Maybe we’ve reached a point where someone like him can win idol. And i would applaud that. Personally, his performances leave me a little cold. Technically, he’s verging on brilliance, but I just don’t emotionally connect. Does he want me to applaud the technique or the performance? Two different things. But I do wish him well. He is certainly the ONLY truly interesting contestant this season.

Loved “The Prayer” vid; a really gorgeous rendition. Adam singing “straight” is really a pleasure to hear. Hope Adam sings a song similar to the style he uses in The Prayer to show his verstatility.
Although I think “Crawl Through the Fire” is my favorite of his.

  • Tatiana

I want to go to the Zodiac Show! Looks like so much fun!!

  • NOLA

Um, just no! Nothing against Adam; but that song is an anthem that should never be messed with. Just sing the song, children.

  • JudyOhio

Actually, I’m one that did need the “snoozefest” pj. I already know what he’s shown on AI so far and the videos most shown. So, that was refreshing to me.

And regarding the OTT biz, I remember Rod Stewart when he was young and skinny, wearing a skin tight, stretch fit, pink, one piece body suit while strutting around singing “if you think I’m sexyyyy, and you want my bodyyyy, c’mon baby let me knowww”……..The whole ensemble was as tight as a pair of pantyhose, lol. And not to mention Elton John’s early years! Even Michael Jackson’s crotch grabs were around 24 years ago. But, maybe some who grew up with that have gotten a little “crotchety” in their thinking if you will in their middle and old age. On the other hand, maybe they didn’t even like it back then, who knows. Adam is definitely getting attention though.

  • NOLA

Snuffles, “The Prayer” was absolutely fantastic. TY!
I’m hoping there is an Elvis night, because the similarity
between the two is uncanny. This will be a great season.

  • JudyOhio

I agree that he could do a good Elvis, but if he did, I’m afraid Simon would really beat him up over it.

  • Trina

IMO, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s already the sure bet! Is he even beatable?

LOL I think at this stage it’s hard to assume he’s unbeatable. Two weeks into the semis last year Simon told Archie that there were 19 miserable people and he was the one to beat. We haven’t even seen everyone in this round yet. There’s a reason why see shock boots every year..because whoever that person is that’s a shock!boot! people usually assume they’re untouchable, stand a good shot at winning or simply were expected to go further than they did. This is Idol, weird stuff happens.

  • NOLA

My guess for the final 2 this season is Adam and Alexis. Wow!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Actually, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m one that did need the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“snoozefestà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ pj. I already know what heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shown on AI so far and the videos most shown. So, that was refreshing to me.

That song doesn’t do it for me. :-) Nothing against Adam… just a matter of taste.

I liked him doing the Five for Fighting cover, which showed restraint (until the end).

I have older teen nieces too with similar tastes in music. They hate American Idol.

I dunno, I think the Idol audience may be older and more conservative at this point. It’ll be interesting to see how much the audience can take.

I am loving Adam more and more. I think he has a serious shot if he can stay ambiguously gay (a nod to SNL) meaning he needs to keep the young fangirlies wanting to marry him one day, even if they know they can’t. If he can (and is willing) to ride that line, he’ll be as safe as a kitten.

He sort of reminds me of Freddie Mercury in a way – flamboyant but masculine, mad vocal chops, and the ability to tear up a stage when he performs. Not afraid to be completely over the top and take on an outrageous character when the song warrants. He is definitely something new for Idol and I like it.

And, I hope he gets the chance to do some Guns N’ Roses this season. Can you imagine him on “Welcome To The Jungle”? Hot.

Adam singing David Foster’s The Prayer is one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard. I want to hear so much more from him.

I am alone in not likin’ it I guess. Oh, well, wouldn’t be the first time. :-)

I have older teen nieces too with similar tastes in music. They hate American Idol.

Is Adam doing that type of music? Not that I can tell.

  • stelladallas

All of these videos are certainly showing Adam’s versatility, which I think will serve him well on Idol. I think he will be very smart in his choices, although I think “Believe” failed.

  • weelassie

thanks for posting The Prayer video. He has amazing versatility. Does anyone know where that was from? He looks incrediible in a suit and with normal guy hair:) I hope his talent will take him far into the competition. I look forward to seeing and hearing all the facets of this guy. I also enjoyed the Five for Fighting song. shows him in another light.

  • idolkiwi

Has anyone noticed that, for whatever reason, Adam has changed the words in “A Change is Gonna Come”….from, “brother,” …to, “father?”

When I first watched this video, I thought there was an emotional intensity in Adam’s performance that I have not seen before, and then just passed it off as another glam-theatre production.

But now I’m not so sure….and after watching it again, I’m finding this be an absolutely fascinating performance!

  • weelassie

Has Adam said he was gay or are we just assuming that he is? David Bowie likes to dress up as does Rod Stewart (to a lesser degree) and neither of them is gay. If anyone remembers Adam Ant, he liked to be very theatrical and showy and again, not gay. There are plenty of women who like to dress incredibly manish but are not gay and lots of guys who like to dress a bit flamboyantly and are not gay. It doesn’t matter to me one way or the other but I was curious as to if this has been stated by him anywhere?

  • idolkiwi

Although, many have said he is Bi. I don’t care, but I’ve seen a person or two claiming to know him say he’s Bi. (they say he knows how to play to the audience he has)

I’m sure he’ll answer it someday with no problem. It’s not a big deal. But, you’re right, I shouldn’t assume he’s gay. I was shocked at the judges on America’s Next Top Model being married. I did say he wanted to be the first gay pop rock Queen and I was just assuming. Thanks for catching me. Bowie is his role model he says.

  • cay

It will be interesting on how much the audience can take. I agree the Idol audience has skewed older in the past few years, but I can’t help but think the drop in numbers this year is older people not comfortable with the mix this year.

My Grandma and her friends didn’t like the top 36 show. They aren’t homophobic, but thought the episode was over the top and they stopped watching. Now I, who hasn’t been this into a season since season 5, loved it and love this season . I’ve seen lots of Adam fans say the same. I loved season 2 and 5. I’ve watched all the others when I was around and mildly liked many of the Idols, but found them all so boring. So, maybe Idol is losing viewers, but gaining new ones back. (Although I told Grandma that 3/6 are worship leaders and she said she’d check em out)

  • Tess

This stereotypical 2009 Grandma (I was born the same year as the first national TV broadcast) loves me some Adam Lambert. I think people forget that I’m from the generation of free love, big bongs, naked broadway shows, over the top entertainers, weird makeup, weirder clothes, war protests, flamboyant British rock bands, burning bras etc. etc.

As I have aged I tend to be much more conservative in my outward expressions but not so in my inner thoughts. I’ll bet that there are hundreds of me out there who secretly relish this new twist to AI and are devouring all of the Adam videos.

By the way, after viewing all of Adam’s videos, it is amazing to me that with his talent and versatility how really hard it is to crack the entertainment’s biz top echelon. It really is getting that “one big break” that throws you into the national limelight and gets a lazy exec. off of his ass to offer someone a contract. Hopefully, AI will be that break that will move Adam up into the upper tier of the music industry.

  • Lexus

This is likely a naive statement for me to make, but I just don’t get what Adam’s (or any performers) sexuality has to do with his being a great singer/performer. One has nothing to do with the other and it saddens and frustrates me that there will be some out there who will completely disregard him (and anyone else) in the competition based on this. Who cares? I’d like to think we’ve come a lot further in this day and age to see beyond that and it wouldn’t impact his placement on the show. I know it’s a matter of opinion, but I do get the impression that many share my opinion that he is the best contestant on the show and I hope he continues to be himself – whoever that may be – and put it all out there on the stage. I simply want to be entertained and could care less about his personal preferences.

Actually, I don’t think he has ever said (anywhere recorded that is) the words “I am gay.” He mentioned in that above vid that kissing his female wicked co star was nice but not necessarily his preference.

But he was playing in West Hollywood. I’m sure he makes some of his money on tips and therefore connects to the audience he has. I think he is undefined, which makes me think bi.

EDIT – Sorry everyone, I just responded to the first post I saw. On my first cup of coffee. Then I scrolled down and saw that Cay already responded much better than I did.

I personally don’t. I think some parents will be cautious about him because of the eyeliner and that sort of thing, and mine happened to come across the Crawl Thru Fire video and they were like :blink_tb:. They don’t really mind, though. I think it will just be parents who are being protective of their kids (nothing wrong with that!) and possibly some very strict Christians. My parents are Christians, though, and they didn’t freak out about it or anything. For me, as long as he can sing and is entertaining, that’s what matters to me.

To me he is just Adam. Undefined.

That’s a good way to put it.

  • Lexus

You’re right, Victoria. I guess it’s just a generational thing. I suppose some parents would be protective, but heck! you see much worse on the streets. Adam’s pretty harmless…I hope what’s beneath the surface – his personality, charm and undeniable talent – completely allays any of their fears. My 64 year old Mom is a big Adam fan. She started watching AI at the first Top 36 show and was impressed with Danny on night one. For a week it was “Danny this..” and “Danny that…” (much to my chagrin). She’s a complete convert after seeing Adam. Now it’s like, “Danny who?” LOL

  • Victoria

I hope whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s beneath the surface – his personality, charm and undeniable talent – completely allays any of their fears.

I think once people see more of him than just the eyeliner and all that, they will figure him out. I guess those of us who post on this website have seen more of him than the average Idol watcher, so we understand a little better. (I think I just worded that wrong but I can’t figure out how else to put it) It shouldn’t take to long for them to see that he’s not the ‘bad guy.’ There will always be people that don’t like him, but that’s fine. They don’t knowing what they’re missing out on, haha!

  • dcisluv

He reminds me of this guy

  • clickchick

Oh, and my 63 year old mom loves Adam (and Danny too, actually). Then again, she’s not exactly what you would call conservative by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Niall

Actually, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think he has ever said (anywhere recorded that is) the words à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I am gay.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ He mentioned in that above vid that kissing his female wicked co star was nice but not necessarily his preference.

He’s gay. By “preference” he was referring to sexual preference, not to whether or not he’d like to kiss that particular girl. A poster at TWoP who knows Adam’s father, Eber Lambert, talked specifically about Adam coming out to his family while still a teenager and that his dad and mom were and continue to be 100% supportive of him. I’m sure a journalist will ask the question but I hope it doesn’t become a big deal where we have article after article about “Can a gay man win AI” which will only serve to make it more of an issue than it ever should be. Adam has been openly gay for years so maybe the fact that he isn’t hiding anything will make the story much less interesting to fans and journalists. I’d like to see him answer the inevitable question by saying “uh, yeah, do you really not know that already?” Being casual about it might be the best way to make it a non-issue.

I really hope we aren’t in for a Clay Aiken fan level of denial until Adam is forced to spell it out for everyone.

  • undercooked

To me he is just Adam. Undefined.

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a good way to put it.

Yes, I think so too. I mistakenly edited that exact phrase out when I fixed a typo so I’m glad you got that in there before I goofed AGAIN! What is the deal with me today…

I hope the debate on who Adam is will die down soon and people will just enjoy the peformances.

  • bean99

Gay, bi, straight — I don’t care a whit but he oversings everything I’ve heard so far which does bother me. His look is fine although this particular costume probably wouldn’t play on idol, lol. Adam has talent but I don’t think I’m willing to make bets at how far he goes. There are some interesting dark horses like Alexis and maybe even Allison and I’m still waiting for the return of Anoop. :wub_tb:

  • dcisluv

    Yay! Anoop!

I seriously don’t give a rat’s hinder whether or not Adam is gay. I just think his singing/performance style is insanely cheesy and way too theatrical.

He should stick to musical theater.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Yikes. Is the melody of the song actually present in his performance? If it is, I certainly can’t hear it. I looooooooove Adam, but just NO on this one.

That being said, I think vocally, he’s gotten better in the past 4-5 years. His more recent videos are a lot better than this one vocally, IMO.

  • ShariG

I think Adam Lambert has an incredible voice. Prayer, thanks for the link, by the way, was incredible. I just don’t think he needs American Idol. If he has already been touring in Wicked, it doesn’t seem like he needs to be discovered. Maybe I’m wrong. Someone like Danny would probably never be discovered without an AI. Vocally though, I don’t think a single contestant in the top 36 can touch Adam. Just a beautiful, beautiful voice. He is a bit too theatrical for me personally, but I can’t deny the talent.

  • cay

Adam does need Idol to be discovered. Look, he’s flamboyant, probably gay/bi. People like him aren’t looked at as the next hot pop star. He needs help picking the right music. Many of the same things that other Idol hopefuls need.

But he’s really got the talent. And he needs Idol in the hope that someone will take the chance on someone different in America.

David Bowie said this in 2002
“] I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think it was a mistake in Europe, but it was a lot tougher in America. I had no problem with people knowing I was bisexual. But I had no inclination to hold any banners or be a representative of any group of people. I knew what I wanted to be, which was a songwriter and a performer, and I felt that [bisexuality] became my headline over here for so long. America is a very puritanical place, and I think it stood in the way of so much I wanted to do”

America still is a puritanical place, especially compared to Europe. He’s got talent and he’s paid his dues. He needs a break.

You guys think he’d be interested in the lead for Spiderman on Broadway next year? U2 is writing the score.

Hee, I hear ya. Hell, I want to hunt down their make up and wardrobe peeps and ask to play dress up. Seriously, that is some kind of talented make up artist. I gotta say, The Prayer is pretty, but of the two vids, I prefer the Adam who would fit right in with Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I like the freaky high note wailing. I did notice the lyric change, too… You know what I’d like to see more than Adam toning it down and singing something totally straight? A emmotionally honest performance in full on glam make up with the mascara running and everything. Kind of like Tim Curry doing I’m Going Home. Now that would be epic. Unlikely, but epic.

Loading comment… :rasberry_ee: well trying to post from obscure places in New Zealand isn’t working to well for me today. LOL

Niall and Cay – you say it so well!

In one of his interviews, Adam said “I know who I am…and I hope people will like that about me.” And he’s right, I find his quiet candor and complete self-assurance very appealing….combined with his extraordinary talent, stage presence and professional work ethics–he is, finally, the “complete package.”

IMHO: I think some open discussion is a good thing–when sharing general information as opposed to innuendo, specualtion etc. People want to know about their beloved entertainers…”is he/she married, gay,bi, have a boyfriend/girlfriend/siblings, how do they do their hair… LOL And I love the way Adam handles those questions…”a bottle of hair dye and a flat iron.” Yesiree that’s my boy–blunt, to the point and move on…

I find I have a lot of respect for Adam–I think he is wise beyond his years, street smart and openly discreet in a very sweet way… He is, by far, the best contestant on AI8, he’s going to set the bar pretty high for most contestants and this is going to be so entertaining to watch!

I always hate to say how old I am, as there’s a lot of age prejudice on the internet. Tess said she was born the year of the first national TV broadcast, well I was born the year Franklin Roosevelt was elected president for the first time. I’m probably older than most of your Grandma’s. I’m also a Christian(that doesn’t trust large too organized churchs) live in Iowa (Bible Belt) and I absolutely love Adam. I don’t think he scares too many folks, as he’s nice, speaks well, sings like no one else and is very charismatic. A friend at work (yes, I still work several days a week, even tho I’m old) who is very Catholic, said she and her family have decided he’s gonna win it all. They all think he’s fantastic. They were David Cook fans last year (like me). He’s the main reason I’m eagerly watching this year. When he walks out, the stage becomes alive.

  • abbysee

JOJOSIE, there is a lot of age prejudice everywhere. Don’t let it bother you. People generalize about a lot of things, including what older people like or tolerate. I think my Grandma would have loved Adam. Even though she was fundamentalist to the hilt, she would just pray for him (bless her heart) but put his picture on her fridge yet the same. If she liked what you did, she could forgive those human traits that she might have thought were weaknesses. I think there are more people like that than those who will just negatively play the sexuality card and just dismiss him out of hand.

I think that Adam, and idol are approaching this far better than they use to. In years past Simon would have already made some kind of snide remarks aimed at Adams sexuality, now he would say so what, I believe that there is some growth here. Maybe I am naive, but I hope he will be judged on his talent and not his sexual orientation.

I think that these interviews that they are allowing are good in that they let the contestants, not just Adam, be exposed to the voters. Considering that we haven’t seen much of some of them, this is their opportunity to show who they are. It will help Adam who will show that he is just a performer not the bogeyman. It would really be cool not to have to have these conversations year after year.

  • Valentin432

Does anyone knows if AI has the rights of David Bowie, Aerosmith or Guns and Roses songs?
Because I can’t remember any of them being performed on the show.

  • lilbrusc102

^ I dunno, but they had David Bowie week on Canadian Idol, so surely his songs are attainable???

The more I watch the “A Change is Gonna Come” video the more I want Adam to sing it on Idol, haha. I would also love to see him sing The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me.” Pete Townsend was pretty theatrical as well…

  • Lys

Does anyone knows if AI has the rights of David Bowie, Aerosmith or Guns and Roses songs?

Well, Cook sang Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” last season, but other than that, I don’t know.

  • Tess

JOJOSIE …I love you already. You are my kind of woman!

It totally surprises me that last year I was rooting for the little kid with the squeeky clean image (who I still ADORE) and now I have chosen to put my energies behind a theatrical, off the wall, androgenous, belter. There is absolutely no way for me to figure out how my psyche works. My musical soul just seems to gravitate to someone without my conscious mind even making the connection. No analysis will help me understand it, it just IS. Sure makes life interesting, entertaining, and exciting!

  • BootStar

Well, Tess, both Archie and Adam have very pretty high voices when they’re singing straight (no pun intended). This is actually the one thing I really don’t like about Adam. I prefer a voice with more gravel in it, which is probably one of the reasons I like David Cook so much (that and his fantastic range and the emotional connection he makes when he’s singing).

Adam’s voice actually sounds a lot like Clay’s to me and, while I recognize Clay’s enormous talent, his singing leaves me in desperate search of some insulin. I just can’t stand that type of singing.

And yet I flove Josh Groban and last season’s Canadian Idol, Theo Tams. (Another sexually ambiguous contestant).

Great catch, cay! But, like many of Bowie’s statements for public consumption, there was probably a hidden expiration date.

After Bowie gave his famous “I am gay” interview to Melody Maker magazine in January 1972 during his Ziggy Stardust period, he denied his impulsive announcement about as often as he reaffirmed it over the years. It certainly gave him the publicity he was seeking on both sides of the Atlantic and afterward he became an FM radio staple in southern California throughout the 1970s. I write this as a devoted fan of 37 years, but Bowie was/is nothing if not a brilliant chameleon.

Ugh…I really hope there is no Adam Lambert backlash to this. Who cares that he’s gay?!!!! :/

  • Lexus

I saw those same pictures on yet another website and YOWZA! My first thought upon seeing them was “Oh no, here we go!”. They don’t bother me one bit, but I do fear once they get out to the conservative masses, they could hurt Adam’s chances. I’ll be majorly pissed if that’s the case. Seriously, who cares? Adam is arguably one of the most talented contestants ever on this show and he deserves his shot, fair and square.

As noted before, I do think this is going to be the season of God vs Gay.
