A Top 13 for American Idol 10?

Harvey Levin of TMZ tweeted what could be a very significant spoiler this afternoon:

I know a bunch of people at Idol…I think it could actually work. I hear Steven Tyler is the star, Jennifer Lopez is the Alpha Dog…and there will be 10 finalists chosen by viewers, and then each judge will get one pick… so there will be 13.

Actually, this doesn’t surprise me, because according to some of the earlier spoilers from Joe’s Place Blog, the producers were toying with expanding the number of finalists to as many as 15.

If true, I wonder if the producers will try to freak out the 13th finalist like they did Anoop Desai back in Season 8. That’s the last time Idol featured a Top 13.  Hee.

What do you think? Is 13 a lucky number?

I don’t think it matters. The changes and the tweaks the producers are making to Idol this year are all well and good. The Powers That Be only have to remember ONE thing in order to create a show folks will want to tune into week and after week….

KEEP THE FOCUS ON THE CONTESTANTS!!!!

Cast the show with INTERESTING, compelling talent and you’ll have us hooked again…

Am I right peeps?

From your typing fingers to their eyes! Hopefully!

Amen!! I absolutely loved American Idol last year, because of the talent. I think there was plenty of it. Casey of course is and remains my favorite from last year, but — I also really liked Crystal.
Unfortunately the judges, producers & even Ryan were a circus act. Part of the appeal for me, with this show — is getting to follow along with so many of them on this, their American dream. It was insulting to see the judges put the focus on themselves. I’m also hoping they don’t try to sway the public with their choices this year. I swear during top three last year they may as well opened the roof and swooped down and crowned Lee right then and there. Let America decide -

Agree with all this, and I’d add a variety of genres represented would be the final ingredient needed for a rebound year.

Not a big deal, people had figured it out looking at the schedule.

  • TopCatDC

    MJ, you nailed it!

Girl4Reba – we must have been watching different shows! I agree with you on Crystal. And while I wasn’t as taken with Casey, he was undeniably talented. Everyone else had burned out by mid-season for me. (Although Lee did rally somewhat at the end.) Oh well, it’s a new year and a new season. I’m glad they’re making so many changes, so the season won’t be about “Idol without Simon”. (Or at least, not just about that.

    I don’t have a problem with a Top 13.

And yes, mj, you are right, :)

  • LoveDaRocker

    Like the changes.
Have to disagree Girl4Reba. Last season was low on talent, particularly at the top 10.

Tonight could be the reason idol’s Dead for good, or make’s an awesome recovery–im crossing my fingers its the second one :)

YES. I completely agree. The focus on the judges the last two seasons in particular drove me nuts.

Totally. Ultimately, they need at least a couple of great contestants (to set up a great finale), then nothing else will matter.

As I mentioned in another thread, I really don’t think that the judges will allow any WGWG less-than-great contestants into the final 20, so that option won’t be available for viewers to vote for.

  • smartalek

Well TPTB let in Lee even after Kris and David Cook. If they let any WGWG through, they are exceptionally foolish. I wouldn’t allow even 1. The only way idol will ever have another successful recording artist is if someone different wins (and most preferably a female artist).

  • Tess

I would be a happy camper if we didn’t see ANY CLONES this year…be it another WGWG (girl or guy) who sits on a chair and sings, a blond barbie doll country singer, a black diva belter, a theatrical retro glam rocker, etc. I don’t know what I want but I know what I don’t want…if that makes any sense.

Hopefully there will be some originals that make it through to the final 13…kids with a unique voice who have that great ‘IT’ factor.

Mj you are right, I hated last year not because of the contestants, but because of the judges and I thought Ryan was a bit off his game and it showed. I think that Crystal, Lee, Mike, and Casey et al, were a decent group, between Simon’s disinterest, Kara’s personality, and Ellen’s inadequacy the show just sagged. Free the judges, let them go off script, and let the kids just freaking sing, and I will be a happy camper. I’ve loved this show so much over the years. I want another season 1,2,5, or 7 or 8, minus all of the obvious manipulations….

  • karenc

I think that is it is the contestants that are important, too. Even having just a couple really interesting contestants with good star quality can really make a season.

I think the problem last year was that they didn’t want someone to be an early frontrunner, and cast some less experienced contestants, but this backfired because no one really emerged as a star to the extent of previous seasons. I even saw interviews early in the season that said that they knew the contestants were less experienced but they wanted someone to develop during the show. And I do think that some, if not all were talented, but it wasn’t as developed as we’ve seen in the past few years.

And I also think part of the problem is the judges weren’t giving enough constructive criticism, which confused some of the contestants.

  • larc

Top 13 instead of Top 12 is OK as long as they don’t eliminate 2 on the first finals result show the way they did in S8 (both Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nuñez were eliminated). If they start with 13, they should stick with one elimination per week unless there is a Save and 2 are eliminated the week after that.

  • Grammie Kari

Oh, I hope there won’t be any Judge’s Save. There were too many guys in the Season 8 line-up. They had to add one more girl. Does anyone still believe Anoop Desai was #13? He was pretty much in the middle with votes, which is just about how it turned out.
