The show opens with a performance from RIHANNA! Dressed in candy pink, she begins a medley of her biggest dance hits, including “Don’t Stop the Music,” “Only Girl in the World,” “We Found Love,” and “Where Have You Been”. Her outfit is sort of like the bottom half of a straight jacket, with a t shirt on top. The effect is like cotton candy! She’s not trying all that hard to sing. She pulls the mic away from her mouth in the middle of phrases! Oh well. SHE’S DANCING! With her dudes. SHE’S GOING TO PERFORM THREE MORE TIMES WOW.

Lizard Sheeple and The Shamester are hosting at the moment. They’re YouTube stars, apparently. Which means I have no idea who they are. Hm. Pretty annoying. Oh just kidding! They’re actually Key and Peele who ARE pretty hilarious. Jay Pharoah from SNL is up in the cheap seats making some jokes. And then DJ Khaled yapping away. Hey. Let’s get to another performance please. Or maybe a presentation or two?

OK. Puff Daddy takes the stage. He pimps his legacy tour. 20 years! He’s there to “give away the best hip hop award.” OK. Puffy not so good reading teleprompters. Best Hip Hop Video goes to…Drake for Hotline Bling. Drake is stuck in traffic. Bummer.

Next, it’s Hailee Steinfeld. She says Favorite New Artist has been whittled down two two! And you can keep on voting! Bryson Tiller and DNCE are the remaining contenders.

Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj are next to perform “Side to Side”. Ariana is ACTUALLY singing. It’s obvious because she’s out of breath singing and riding a stationary bike at the same time. I won’t complain too much, though. Her dumb brother, Frankie, is in the audience, if you care. The dancers are super ripped. Niki rapps and points to the audience. The song has a slinky reggae beat. ALERT HOT DANCERS PRETEND ORAL SEX. OK then.

Alicia Keys is introduced as “the new coach of The Voice.” Not multi-grammy singer? It’s the 53rd anniversary of the Martin Luther King “I Have a Dream” speech. She recites a poem. Then she sings a little, belting it out a’cappella. She believes in the dream! “All women and men are created equal,” she declares before announcing the winner of Best Male Video. And the winner is…Calvin Harris feat Rihanna. “This is What You Came For.” Calvin delivers his thanks via video. He’s touring in the UK.

Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps takes the stage to shouts of USA USA USA. He loves hip hop! He’s a big fan of Future. That famous meme that took the internet by storm? He was listening to “Stick Talk”, by Future on his headphones. He’s up next to perform “F*ck Up Some Commas”.

Oh boy. Kanye West takes the stage next to the song that pissed off Taylor Swift, “Famous.” The crowd chants YEEZY YEEZY YEEZY. He’s here to present his new video. BUT FIRST HE’S GOING TO TALK. Strap in everybody. I’m grabbing my Mai Tai. He promises he won’t be mad if Beyonce loses tonight. So, now he’s defending his “celebrity mannequin” video. “I see you Amber,” he shouts to the crowd. She shrugs. She’s so over it. “We came over in the same boat, but we’re all in the same bed.” Then he pivots to talking about murder in Chicago last week. Then pivots back. “THAT’S WHY I CALLED HER.” Taylor of course. Because he loves her. Now, he’s back to talking about kids and murder. Ha ha. Another incoherent rant from Kanye. And most of the mainstream media will be afraid to call him out. Truman, Ford, Disney, West. Merchants are his role models. OK. “I’m standing in front of my Idol Puff Daddy, I’m standing in front of my wife, Kim Kardashian West. I’m standing in front of the future, Chance the Rapper.”

Finally he shuts his pie hole, and the video plays. It’s called “Fade.” It takes place in a gym. An extremely fit woman dances. She’s got some major underboob and butt going on. That’s pretty much the video. But the song is good. Great groove. Rap, with some funk and gospel elements. The end is super racy. The dancer feels her up in the shower and makes out with a dude. Then we’re back in the gym, and she’s made up like a lioness, with the dude and a baby. Well oh well.

The ICONIC Naomi Campbell is on stage to introduce Rihanna. The sounds of the Island is all over popular music…because Rihanna! She’s back on stage. Not back on stage. She’s in the audience making her way to the stage singing “Rude Boy,” “What’s My Name,” and “Work.”

Rita Ora and Ansel Elgort are here to make a few jokes (hm) and introduce Nick Jonas and Ty Dolla $ign performing “Bacon.” And I’m pretty sure this isn’t live. Nick is in a diner. He ends up in a booth with his brother an his band. The customers and staff break into dance. Outside, Ty Dolla $ign raps in between two vintage cars bumping to the music. They finally take a stage outside MSG to finish the song. Pepsi congratulates Nick on an EPIC performance. SPONSORED. Probably paid for that Grease-like musical set.

Serena Williams, the tennis player, is next. She introduces her “friend” BEYONCE! SURPRISE! Except nobody is actually surprised. She performs a medley of songs from Lemonade, “Pray You Catch Me,” “Hold Up,” “I Ain’t Sorry,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” “Formation,”. White fur and SMOKE MACHINE. She’s the star of the century. Don’t mess with Bey. That means you Jay Z. WHOA SHE CRACKS THE TV CAMERA WITH A BASEBALL BAT. She recites lyrics from the visual album. “Heaven will be a life without betrayal.” and “YOU BETTER CALL BECKY WITH THE GOOD HAIR.” After Beyonce ends up in a RING OF FIRE before ending it all with “Formation.” Key and Peele look terrified. Better be. Beyonce just took us through an epic journey of love, betrayal and FIERCENESS.

Some guys from “The Get Down” are here to present Best Collaboration Video to Fifth Harmony feat Ty Dolla $ign “Work from Home.” That’s what all you Harmonizers were doing, voting your little fingers off. Congrats! The girls are here to accept their award. Nice.

Kim Kardashian West takes the stage. Zzzzzzz. She’s here to woodenly introduce Britney Spears. She’s got a new album, Glory, that’s getting great reviews. What would a Britney Spears appearance be without bad lip syncing? G-Easy is on hand to rap on “Make Me.” Pretend crotch grabbing as Britney walks by him.

Key and Peele dogging G-Easy for his extreme whiteness. The shtick as social media stars is winning the night. So funny.

The Olympic gymnastics Final Five are here! More chants of USA USA USA. Except there is only four. Gabby Douglas is having medical issues. OH NOES. Hope she’s OK. They are very giggly as they present Best Female Video to Beyonce for “Hold Up.” Baseball bat wielding for the win. Carrie Underwood is proud.

Tracee Ellis Ross (Daughter of Diana!) is next to introduce Rihanna AGAIN singing from her Trap oeuvre! She sings “Need Me” with a ton of bleeping. Is there such a thing as too much Rihanna? Maybe. “Pour it Up” is next. “Money money on my mind.” And then “Bitch Better Have My Money”. The end.

Key and Peele: Welcome to the extended Rihanna concert featuring the VMAs. Then they crack she’s singing a song from every year Frank Ocean didn’t release an album. Har.

Fifth Harmony enters stage left! Yay! They present Best New Artist (They won) to DNCE. Well not new exactly, because it’s Joe Jonas’ band and he’s been around forever.

The Chainsmokers are here to sing “Closer” really badly? Remember their American Idol performance? They still suck. The lead singer can’t sing, full stop. Halsey sings a verse. She’s better. Sort of. “No we ain’t ever getting older.” Ha ha. Yes you are.

Jimmy Fallon enters the stage dressed as Ryan Lochte with the green hair and Olympic medal. “Is it too late now to say sorry!” It’s my jam, he shouts. Adding that he directed and wrote that video. Liar! Get it? He presents Video of the Year to…Beyonce and “Formation.” She dedicates the award to the people of New Orleans.

Mary J. Blige is here to introduce Rihanna, the winner of The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, one last time. She closes the show with a performance of her major hits, “Stay” and “Diamonds” and “Love on the Brain.” She’s in a beige full-skirted gown, with an elegant orchestra behind her.

DRAKE MADE IT OUT OF TRAFFIC YAY! He’s here to present Ri Ri with her award. He waxes poetic about how humble, sweet and hardworking she is. And he’s in love with her! Get a room guys! Rihanna has so many people to thank. All her Barbados peeps. And that’s the end.

Beyonce is the big winner of the night. Although Rihanna was feted tonight with the Millennium award and THREE performances, Bey totally stole the show.
