Kelly Clarkson and More – Grammy Telecast Details!

The Kelly Clarkson Grammy performance, tributes to Carole King and the late Patti Page will include performances of “Natural Woman” and “Tennessee Waltz”, respectively. Via The Tennessean:

One Friday rehearsal surprise was recent Nashville transplant Clarkson’s plaintive, splendid version of one of Tennessee’s state songs, “Tennessee Waltz,” as popularized by the late Patti Page. Clarkson followed that with a Janis Joplin-esque take on Carole King’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

Pop star, Taylor Swift, is expected to open the Grammys, which will also feature a tribute to the late Levon Helmm that will feature Zac Brown and Alabama Shakes singer Brittany Howard.

The Grammys will air on CBS Sunday night beginning at 8 pm.

I’m really looking forward to all of the performances on the Grammy’s, especially Kelly’s performance (an Bruno’s). It should be a great show.

  • CB40

Love the Grammys and go Kelly!

  • heartly

I’m really looking forward to the whole show this year. Lots of great performances
lined up and no true frontrunners for any of the awards should make for an
    entertaining evening.

Here’s some more about Kelly from the rehearsals yesterday and how nervous she is about talking.  lol

    http://popwatch.ew.com/2013/02/09/grammys-2013-kelly-clarkson-and-her-engagement-ring-shine-through-stage-fright/

“I can’t believe you’re making me say all of this,” Clarkson said Friday
as she faced a cruel teleprompter with a speech about two of this
year’s Grammy lifetime achievement award winners, Carole King and Patti
Page. The mighty stage singer, it turns out, turns to jelly as a public
speaker. At one point, mocking herself, she let loose with some
speed-talking gibberish that sounded like an alien auctioneer.

Those fans were especially excited to be in the arena when Clarkson let
loose with her singing voice, which showed no signs of hitch or
hesitation. Clarkson, standing on a small pedestal stage that sits in
the center of the floor audience, delivered a crystalline version of
“The Tennessee Waltz,” one of Page’s signature hits, and then an absolutely incandescent version of “Natural Woman,” the song written by King and most famously interpreted by Aretha Franklin. And yes, that’s right Idol fans, that song would be familiar if you were tuning in during the show’s earliest days…

Also, a classically trained cellist, Lindsay Springer, who is currently playing for Celine Dion and Frankie Moreno, tweeted that she will be performing with Carrie.

    Can’t wait!! She’s gonna nail it :)

  • fuzzywuzzy

I read that too, but if the article that MJ posted is right, there’s been a change in plans.

  • Heidijoy

Nice they are featuring good music and great singers the last couple of years.  Maybe there is hope for the Music World.

I am so here for this year’s Grammys.  Can’t wait!

  • voicesinmyhead

I’m watching but while I’m excited for Kelly and I hope she gets an award I’m a major stan of fun. (the band who is also nominated in a couple of the same categories as Kelly) so I hope they both get Grammy’s!

  • 1rollbounce2

HAHAHAHA kelly readin’ the prompter story is so funny,  i can imagine it like i was there myself.
anyone else find the kelly clarkson degrees of separation insanely bizarro?
idol/natural woman- aretha franklin, inauguration-aretha franklin, inauguration- james taylor, james taylor- carole king, carole king – natural woman.

I heard JT was opening the show with Suit & Tie and a new song?

Whether it’s Taylor Swift or Timberlake, that’s just telling me to skip the first 10 minutes of the show.

I’m not excited about the performers this year.  They seem lackluster compared to last year.  And it seems like Carrie performs every year.  Anyway.  I’m just watching for LL Cool J at this point.

I’m assuming Joplin-esque means we won’t be getting that high note from Idol lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

According to this interview with Erlich (producer of the Grammy’s) posted yesterday, Justin will be premiering his “Suit and Tie” and opening the Grammy’s.

    A dual open? Sounds plausible.

You can add another step in there.. before Kelly did Idol, when she was out in LA she was working with Gerry Goffin who was married to Carole King and co-wrote Natural Woman.

  • supersonic

I see Ken Ehrlich is still in love with Timberlake.  Either way, I’m skipping the first ten minutes of the show.  Lord knows how much I hate Timberlake.

omg will she do that high note she did on AI1??

  • windmills

If this list from the Grammy site doesn’t change then all 3 categories where Kelly is nominated (Pop Vocal Album, Pop Vocal Performance, and obviously Record Of The Year) plus obviously Song Of The Year for WDKY’s writers, and Country Vocal Performance (where Carrie is nominated) will be awarded on the primetime telecast. Best Country Song (where Blown Away’s writers are nominated) will be presented pre-telecast.

supersonic: And it seems like Carrie performs every year.

Starting with 2007 Carrie actually has performed at the Grammys every year except  2011. I can definitely understand why non-fans would be indifferent but for fans, it’s nice seeing her featured.

Carrie rehearsed her performance tonight and there are pretty much zero spoilers. Chalk it up to Carrie’s insistence on playing it close to the vest. No idea what that could be though. When I saw the cellist thing it was obvious Carrie was going to be singing Top Of The World by the Dixie Chicks (originally by Patty Griffin) and that totally wasn’t the delirium talking (it was the delirium talking). As far as her category, I’d be happy for Eric, Ronnie, Dierks, or Carrie to bring home the Grammy there. In Country Song, I’d be thrilled with any of the 5 nominated songs and their songwriters winning. It’s a crazy strong category where I think it says a lot just being in there. The great thing about the country categories at the Grammys is when they aren’t shy about throwing in non-hits, so you see people like Vince Gill & The Time Jumpers, Don Williams, Jamey Johnson, and Alan Jackson nominated with Carrie and Eric who were nominated with a couple of 2012’s best songs that turned into hits.

I’m excited for Kelly’s performance!! I think it’s going to be a real good night for her and it’s great feeling relaxed about it and letting it unfold. I couldn’t be happier about her 2 songs for the night.

With the confusion over the Taylor or Justin T opening I’m expecting 1 to start with a solo, then a duet, then the other to finish with a solo. Does anybody else remember how they did something together last June for the Walmart Shareholder’s Meeting? It wasn’t musical but I bet that wasn’t a coincidence.

In addition to my Idol girls I’m BEYOND excited for the Levon Helm tribute (I got my Britanny Howard performing, and Zac Brown AND Mavis Staples!!!!), and pretty stoked for most of the performances. Bring it, everybody! The ratings are obviously going to be down from last year’s sky high numbers but, let’s have a great show.

oooh, super late night for Kelly tonight, she JUST took the stage in NOLA for her concert and has been riding around on a Mardi Gras float since about 4pm.  Thank goodness for private jets, but this is a crazy schedule.

I just saw this tweet… that’s going to hurt a little bit.

    ThatWeirdGirl ?@ThatWeirdGirl
I feel sorry for Kelly Clarkson. She’s been riding all day, performing for us, & has a Grammy rehearsal at 8am tomorrow. #endymion

    Carrie
rehearsed her performance tonight and there are pretty much zero
spoilers. Chalk it up to Carrie’s insistence on playing it close to the
vest. No idea what she might have up her sleeve
    though.

I saw David Wild’s tweet about rehearsals
tonight and his first one that he deleted that made it sound like Carrie
and Adele were performing together. His second one reworded it, but it
still makes me wonder because Adele is doing something on the telecast
but she hasn’t been announced for anything yet, I don’t think.

No Gaga or Katy, it won’t be the best grammys.

I am excited about the Carole King Tribute – she deserves the special Grammy!

It will be good to see and hear Kelly and Carrie!  Did you ever wonder if they were personal friends in real life?

  • heartly

They’re friendly, but not really friends. Kelly was just asked that recently in a CMT Radio interview. I could only find this clip at the moment.

I’m embarassed to say that I couldn’t remember that “high note” from Natural Woman, so I looked up the youtube:

NOW, I remember. I’m such a bad fan. lol

Jeebus. Well at least Kelly gained time on the way back. Brandon had best have laid out the most comfy accommodations for the whole day after this hectic weekend.

Yeah, IA Adele is likely doing something not yet announced, but I don’t think it’s with Carrie. Any other tweet I saw mentioning her rehearsal (like the one from this account: https://twitter.com/KingQueen) appeared to have her rehearsing alone (or at least not with Adele, lol).

heartly: They’re friendly, but not really friends. Kelly was just asked that recently in a CMT Radio interview. I could only find this clip at the moment.

Yup. Lots of respect there and they are friendly – Carrie’s mentioned how much she enjoys being around Kelly (after Kelly attended her 2010 Play On tour concert in Nashville) and blogged about Kelly rescuing her when she had a microwave failure in her trailer at the 2010 AMAs, and Kelly’s always been very complimentary of Carrie. Not in any PR type way, either (PR friendships aren’t either’s style anyway). But their social circles don’t really intersect.

Is there a streaming online of the telecast and red carpet.  Please send the link.  I cannot don’t know why — cannot get CBS on my TV.

“You can add another step in there.. before Kelly did Idol, when she was out in LA she was working with Gerry Goffin who was married to Carole King and co-wrote Natural Woman.”

Yes, I actually knew that too…why I didn’t include it is beyond me.  But to really twist my brain – I was thinking how that 6 degrees of separtation is based on the friend of friend chain thing.  Which brings us to Carole and James’ duet of “you’ve got a friend”.

    LOL

  • HappyDaisy_2

I thought Adele was going to be singing her James Bond movie song, Skyfall.  But a quick look online indicates that she’ll do that at the Oscars, not Grammys.

LAPD is beefing up security for the Grammies due to the manhunt for the ex-cop killer. He named Kelly as one of the women he admires in his manifesto. They’re not saying it’s because of Kelly though. It could be because there will be  a large concentration of officers (his target) there to begin with.
